Tips: Serifs —Serifs appeared during the Roman Empire —Some scholars, such as Father John Catich, say that serifs were created when brushing letters onto stone before carving them. —Others, such as Nicolete Gray, argue that serifs were created during the carving process itself. —Are serif fonts more legible than sans serif? You will surely meet a client at some point who believes this with all their heart. —One theory is that serifs improve legibility because they guide the horizontal movement of the eye. —Research studies have failed to prove, however, that serifs enhance reading speed or comprehension. —At very small sizes, sans-serif fonts can be more legible because they have less detail. —Nonetheless, many individuals prefer serif fonts for reading long texts. Bias favors familiarity; people may prefer what they see most. Sources —Nicolete Gray, A History of Lettering: Creative Experiment and Letter Identity (David R. Nugget tips —A nugget is a lump of gold or other precious metal buried in the dirt. —Verbal nuggets are little kernels of wisdom, and food nuggets are bite-sized clumps of processed soy or pulverized chicken. —In typography, every word is a nugget. Good spacing holds the nugget together, so it reads as a whole thing, not just a string of letters. —Paragraphs and headlines are nuggets, too. —Make your headlines more nuggetty by tightening the spacing between words, letters, and lines. —Auto line spacing is too loose for headlines. Tighten it up! —Auto line spacing creates big problems when you are combining different sizes of type. Use custom line spacing to group units of information together, such as headings and subheadings. —Love your nuggets! And next time your layout is looking baggy and loose, follow the nuggets! Special thanks to Abbott Miller for the kernel of nugget theory. Music by Michelle Qureshi #typography #graphicdesign

Another perspective on understanding how to pair fonts. What if each font was a colour? How would they sit together? Almost like an outfit of clothes youre putting together. Bkue and green should never be seen? Im not so sure about that but deffo some things are more pleasing to the eye than others. Fuck. #typography #graphicsdesign
Serifs are generally considered more readable. Hence why so many long form formats use them. Not always. But generally. Heres why. Its late, hence the whispering. Youre a good person.

dot-font: Seven Principles of Typographic Contrast
The late Canadian typographer Carl Dair was one of the great typographic designers of the 1950s and 1960s, and he may have been the best of them all at explaining the nature of typography. In coordinated projects that he both wrote and designed, he managed to describe — and show — the ways in which […]

Tactile Lettering
Tactile lettering has been a huge part of my lettering journey. It has taught me so much about letterforms in a way that just pencil and paper couldn’t. In addition to creating letters out of various food materials, tactile lettering has taught me how to style my own photographs, handle difficult ma
