“In conclusion, SARS-CoV-2 has a profound and multifaceted impact on cardiac tissue, mediated primarily through the Spike protein's interaction with the ACE2 receptor.”

“The virus not only causes direct damage to the heart by infecting cardiomyocytes but also triggers significant systemic effects that can exacerbate preexisting cardiovascular conditions.”

“The extensive expression of ACE2 in heart cells underpins the high susceptibility of cardiac tissues to SARS-CoV-2, leading to a range of complications from myocarditis to severe myocardial dysfunction.”

“The problem is that the heart simply cannot repair itself, so any damage is there for life,” says Angela Clerk, a professor of biomedical sciences at the University of Reading. “It is also a robust organ that tends to not give much indication it is failing until it is too late, so, in my view, it could be many years before we can assess how much additional damage was done to people’s hearts by the Covid pandemic.”

“Cardiac injury is recognized as one of the most frequent complications of the disease. Long-term cardiac complications following COVID-19 include ischemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and myocarditis.”

➡️“Clinicians and other interprofessional healthcare team members need to maintain a high degree of suspicion for developing these complications, especially since typical symptoms of cardiac disease may not be present in these patients.”
