🧵 I think I have a very unique & valuable perspective when it comes to SARS-CoV-2. I've spent the 1st three years of the pandemic in one of the the busiest hospital based chemistry/bloodgas labs in the US & the last 20 months as a generalist in a medium sized hospital. 1/

Living With Long COVID and Its Debilitating Symptoms
I will never stop talking about the dangers of COVID. I have been sick for four years since August of 2020 (before vaccines were even released). This is real. It is happening. People ignoring it doesn’t make them invincible.

“Beyond persistent symptoms, Long COVID is also associated with an increased risk for significant medical events, including major adverse cardiovascular events and new-onset diabetes mellitus.(1) For many people, Long COVID has a significant impact on their ability to work, study, take care of their families, and participate in other activities of daily living. For these reasons, Long COVID is often described as a “mass disabling event.”(2) Long COVID can also lead to financial hardship, social isolation, and mental health challenges.”

I failed my 2nd NYS Road Test. I got confused when the tester asked me to parallel park “beside a Lexus” because we don’t parallel park *beside* cars. Once I was confused, it was all downhill from there. Something is wrong with my brain, & apparently I can’t live in the world…

As COVID Surges, the High Price of Viral Denial | The Tyee

“Repeated studies show in the bluntest terms that the initial acute infection is only the tip of the iceberg. Even a mild bout of COVID can leave a legacy of blood clots, heart failure, diabetes, decreased brain function (see sidebar), long COVID (now affecting 400 million people worldwide) and immune damage that increasingly makes people more vulnerable to a plethora of infectious diseases and possibly cancers.

These problems can erupt three years after an infection”

COVID can cause new health problems even 3 years after infection, study finds: 'We don’t know what’s going to happen at 10 years'
“People are developing new-onset disease as the result of an infection that they had three years ago,” says Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, a clinical epidemiologist at Washington University in St. Louis and lead author of the study. ‘It challenges the notion that these viruses are sort of self-contained or that after the acute first phase, they become inconsequential.’”

Perspective: I Thought I Was Protected but I Still Got Long Covid
“I was aware of Long COVID since I had persistent loss of taste and smell going back to my first infection, but I never really considered it to be Long COVID, as it did not have a major effect on my life. The third infection is really what tipped me into Long COVID. Since then, I've had intermittent chest pain, heart palpitations, various neurological issues (face numbness, buzzing in the feet), joint pain, anxiety, issues with my vision, fatigue, complete alcohol and caffeine intolerance. I alternate between good weeks and bad weeks,”

Scientists are piecing together the puzzle of long COVID. Here's what to know

“A large study published in early 2024 showed that even people who had a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection still experienced new health problems related to COVID-19 in the third year after the initial infection.

Such findings parallel other research showing that the virus persists in various organ systems for months or years after COVID-19 infection. And research is showing that immune responses to the infection are still evident two to three years after a mild infection. Together, these studies may explain why a SARS-CoV-2 infection years ago could still cause new health problems long after the initial infection.”

“Debilitating a Generation”: Expert Warns That Long COVID May Eventually Affect Most Americans

“Think you’ve grasped the full extent of COVID’s ongoing impact? Think again. As Americans shrug off vaccines and forget indoor air quality, the virus stealthily continues its destructive path. This was pretty much inevitable without new guidance urging a change in strategy and nobody telling us the full truth.

The danger is clear and present: COVID isn’t merely a respiratory illness; it’s a multi-dimensional threat impacting brain function, attacking almost all of the body’s organs, producing elevated risks of all kinds, and weakening our ability to fight off other diseases. Reinfections are thought to produce cumulative risks, and Long COVID is on the rise. Unfortunately, Long COVID is now being considered a long-term chronic illness — something many people will never fully recover from.”
