Scientists are piecing together the puzzle of long COVID. Here's what to know

“A large study published in early 2024 showed that even people who had a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection still experienced new health problems related to COVID-19 in the third year after the initial infection.

Such findings parallel other research showing that the virus persists in various organ systems for months or years after COVID-19 infection. And research is showing that immune responses to the infection are still evident two to three years after a mild infection. Together, these studies may explain why a SARS-CoV-2 infection years ago could still cause new health problems long after the initial infection.”

Health and air travel: Why I still wear a mask on planes

“I’m sick of getting sick on planes. I got another case of COVID-19 last month, on a domestic flight, sitting near a woman who was sneezing. I wore an N95 mask, but she was only wearing the loose surgical type. I suspect she knew she was infectious.”

Long COVID cost the Australian economy almost $10 billion in 2022 – new research

“The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 10–20% of people suffer from long COVID after they recover from the initial COVID infection.

Common symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath and “brain fog”, but more than 200 different symptoms have been linked to long COVID. The condition affects daily functioning and can be debilitating.

Our research, published today, estimated the economic burden of long COVID in Australia. We calculated long COVID cost the Australian economy almost A$10 billion in 2022 alone.”

ARBITRARY DENIAL of the OBVIOUS !

A great article in Greek that explains the denial surrounding the pandemic:

“We believe that understanding the strategy of "arbitrary denial of the obvious" is critical for a person as a unit and a society as a whole to develop the necessary defense against misinformation and propaganda.

Recognizing and addressing this strategy and its tactics ensures greater transparency and above all an informed society that does not function as a disorderly herd, but as an organized whole with a common vision and humanity.”

Did Covid precautions and treatments help Team Australia win big at the Olympics?
Did Covid precautions and treatments help Team Australia win big at the Olympics?

“What's less reported is the precautions the team took to keep themselves safe.

Inferring from media reports, these were:

  • wearing masks (KN95s) during air travel to the games
  • wearing them in the Olympic village
  • Frequent testing for Flu, Covid and other viruses
  • Rapid use of antivirals (likely Paxlovid), which some athletes said helped them win medals after 1-2 days.

Some questions for all of you:

  • How long until each country realizes the competitive advantage offered by not getting sick?
  • Easily accessible antivirals kept Team Australia performing at their best, why can't you access them to stay healthy too?”

Predictive Assessment of the Antiviral Properties of Imperata cylindrica against SARS‐CoV‐2
Predictive Assessment of the Antiviral Properties of Imperata cylindrica against SARS‐CoV‐2

Imperata cylindrica or compounds show promise against COVID-19.

Tabanone, in particular, could inhibit a key viral protein and is considered safe, offering hope for new treatments.

Commonly known as “speargrass,” “cogongrass,” “alang-alang” or “kunai grass,” Imperata cylindrica is a member of the Poaceae family.

“The existing therapeutic alternatives have presented various setbacks such as low potency, poor pharmacokinetic profiles, and drug resistance. The need for alternative therapeutic options cannot be overemphasized. Plants and their phytochemicals present interesting characteristics that make them suitable candidates for the development of antiviral therapeutic agents. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral potential of Imperata cylindrica (I. cylindrica). Specifically, the objective of this study was to identify I. cylindrica phytochemicals that display inhibitory effects against SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro)”

Similarities and differences between HIV and SARS-CoV-2

In the last 50 years we have experienced two big pandemics, the HIV pandemic and the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2.

The two viruses share a mechanism known as NETosis.

“As a conclusion, we would like to point that although at first sight these viruses do not resemble each other, the molecular mechanisms used are common: the increased of pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis, the modifications in intestinal microbiota, the NETs formation.”
