Due to the increase in patients in our hospitals with winter viruses such as flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), we are asking all visitors and colleagues in clinical areas - including outpatients - to wear facemasks at all times.

CDC infection control body rejects the science on airborne transmission
“For many disabled and immunocompromised people, hospital settings are a significant threat to health and safety. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, nosocomial- or healthcare acquired- SARS-COV-2 infections have been an additional risk for sick and vulnerable people seeking care. As of today, there have still been no updates to national-level guidance to reflect that SARS-COV-2 was determined to be airborne in 2021.”

Over 300 COVID outbreaks hit Alberta acute care facilities last year

“Thousands of patients and health care workers were infected during COVID-19 outbreaks in acute care facilities in Alberta in the last year, raising questions about why more isn’t being done to prevent in-hospital transmission… …’The reality is that people are dying from COVID in our hospitals, and we really are doing very little to prevent them getting ill and getting infected. And we wouldn't do the same for any other infectious disease,’”

A plea to maskless health-care workers from vulnerable patients - Healthy Debate
A plea to maskless health-care workers from vulnerable patients - Healthy Debate

“I politely asked her to wear it and told her I was immunocompromised. She rolled her eyes, held the mask in front of her face without actually putting it on. She leaned across me to hit the button, even though there was another set of buttons on the opposite side of the elevator. This felt like a deliberate attempt to violate my personal space and ensure I knew just how unhappy she was that I asked her to mask. As time went on and more people bought into the comfortable lie that COVID was over, it became harder to access safe medical care. Fewer and fewer staff were complying with mandates; eventually mandates were dropped altogether in favour of “mask-friendly” policies.”

🧵 I think I have a very unique & valuable perspective when it comes to SARS-CoV-2. I've spent the 1st three years of the pandemic in one of the the busiest hospital based chemistry/bloodgas labs in the US & the last 20 months as a generalist in a medium sized hospital. 1/

“For the week of September 22, stats from the Canadian Nosocomial (Hospital-Acquired) Infection Surveillance Program, with data from 78 hospitals, including 16 in BC, show that 31% of patients in hospital with COVID acquired their infection while admitted for another medical condition.

This is a major failure by public health and Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC).”

Simple measures lessen hospital-acquired COVID-19 infections
Simple measures lessen hospital-acquired COVID-19 infections
“People shouldn’t die or have medical complications from a COVID-19 infection they caught in hospital, and hospital workers shouldn’t have to take sick leave due to a COVID-19 infection they caught at work.”
In a new study published in the Journal of Hospital Infections, Burnet researchers found simple infection control measures could save lives and reduce costs for hospitals.  These measures include testing patients for COVID-19 on admission, requiring staff to wear N95 masks in clinical areas and using Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) or Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests to prevent transmissions.
