“One big, very basic issue is that most docs don't know what bird flu/avian flu/hpai is and that it's an Influenza A

So then it can't even cross their mind to consider HPAI if they get a flu A+ patient

Add to that fact that many are not aware of the growing h5n1 issue.”

“This 13-year-old received 3 antivirals (oseltamavir, amantadine, and baloxavir) PLUS plasma exchange for #H5N1. In over a decade as an ID doctor, I've never used such measures for #Influenza — not even during H1N1.

H5N1 and its viral evolution is alarming; we must boost surveillance, testing, prevention, and education to control it.”

I hope people realize we are about to have an H5N1 pandemic. The sequence in BC they dumped the data late last night and it shows it’s picked up the necessary mutation needed to be an efficient human host. It’s highly pathogenic, it’s deadly, and it’s now got what it needs to…

It’s highly pathogenic, it’s deadly, and it’s now got what it needs to spread among humans. It’s got the same mutation as 1918 Spanish influenza. Brace yourselves.”

They’ll be testing to see if the H5N1 virus in the BC teen is binding the sialic acid-α2,6-galactose (SAα2,6Gal) receptor with high affinity. If so, the leap necessary for efficient human to human has been made.

In order for efficient H-H transmission of avian viruses there needs to be a change from preferential recognition by the virus hemagglutinin of α2-3-sialyl-galactose-terminating host cell receptors, predominant in avian respiratory and gastrointestinal epithelia, to those terminating in α2-6-sialyl-galactose, which predominate in the human upper respiratory tract.”
