November 18, 2024: āCalifornia reports 41 new dairy herds infected with H5N1 bird flu, bringing the statewide total to 335.
Over 30% of the state's dairy herds have been confirmed to be infected, according to USDA.ā
āThis is outrageous. First Avian flu case in Canada, the teen affected went to the ICU. But they aren't using airborne precautions. So this could spread to any number of health care workers on that unit, and further beyond. We have learned absolutely nothing.ā

In order for efficient H-H transmission of avian viruses there needs to be a change from preferential recognition by the virus hemagglutinin of α2-3-sialyl-galactose-terminating host cell receptors, predominant in avian respiratory and gastrointestinal epithelia, to those terminating in α2-6-sialyl-galactose, which predominate in the human upper respiratory tract.ā
