Exclusive: OpenAI, Hearst strike content deal

OpenAI has struck a content partnership deal with Hearst, one of the largest newspaper and magazine holding groups in the country, the companies said Tuesday.

Why it matters: OpenAI has already struck similar deals with Hearst's magazine rivals Condé Nast and Dotdash Meredith.

Zoom in: The deal allows OpenAI to integrate content from more than 40 of Hearst's local newspapers — including the Houston Chronicle and San Francisco Chronicle — as well as content from more than 20 of its magazine brands, such as Esquire, Cosmopolitan and Women's Health, into OpenAI's products, such as ChatGPT.

Wimbledon tennis tournament replaces line judges with technology in break with tradition

LONDON (AP) — Wimbledon is replacing line judges with electronic line-calling, the latest step into the modern age by the oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament.

The All England Club announced Wednesday that technology will be used to give the “out” and “fault” calls at the championships from 2025, eliminating the need for human officials to make them.

Wimbledon organizers said the decision to adopt live electronic line calling was made following extensive testing at the 2024 tournament and “builds on the existing ball-tracking and line-calling technology that has been in place for many years.”

US Weighs Google Breakup in Historic Big Tech Antitrust Case

Antitrust enforcers are weighing a breakup to mitigate the Alphabet Inc. business’s dominance in search, the agency said in a court filing on Tuesday, confirming an earlier Bloomberg News report. Judge Amit Mehta could also order Google to provide access to the underlying data it uses to build its search results and artificial intelligence products, it said.

The Justice Department “is considering behavioral and structural remedies that would prevent Google from using products such as Chrome, Play, and Android to advantage Google search and Google search-related products and features,” the agency said.

Chinese Access To AT&T/Verizon Wiretap System Shows Why We Cannot Backdoor Encryption

A cyberattack tied to the Chinese government penetrated the networks of a swath of U.S. broadband providers, potentially accessing information from systems the federal government uses for court-authorized network wiretapping requests.

For months or longer, the hackers might have held access to network infrastructure used to cooperate with lawful U.S. requests for communications data, according to people familiar with the matter, which amounts to a major national security risk. The attackers also had access to other tranches of more generic internet traffic, they said.

Apple Slowly Moves Away From Its Annual Product Release Strategy

Apple eyes Nov. 1 as date for its next product release, with more devices following in early 2025. Now that the iPhone 16 is shipping, Apple is turning its attention to other hardware products, including a new low-end iPhone, updated iPads and M4 Macs. Here is a look at what’s coming and when to expect it.

First, I expect Apple to announce the following products around the end of October. The company is currently aiming to then release at least some of them on Friday, Nov. 1:

Low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 chip (code-named J604). High-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M4 chips (J614 and J616). Revamped Mac mini in M4 and M4 Pro chip configurations (J773). Refreshed iMac with an M4 chip (J623). Refreshed iPad mini (J410).

Google must crack open Android for third-party stores, rules Epic judge

Google’s Android app store is an illegal monopoly — and now it will have to change.

Today, Judge James Donato issued his final ruling in Epic v. Google, ordering Google to effectively open up the Google Play app store to competition for three whole years. Google will have to distribute rival third-party app stores within Google Play, and it must give rival third-party app stores access to the full catalog of Google Play apps, unless developers opt out individually.

These were Epic’s biggest asks, and they might change the Android app marketplace forever — if they aren’t immediately paused or blocked on appeal.

Hinton has warned about the risks of AI, while touting its benefits. He left his post at Google’s AI research team last year so that he could talk freely about the risks associated with developing AI too quickly.

He also supported a bill recently vetoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, that would have held AI developers accountable for any severe harm caused by their technologies.

Asked on Tuesday about any regrets regarding his work, Hinton said: “In the same circumstances, I would do the same again, but I am worried that the overall consequence of this might be systems more intelligent than us that eventually take control.”

Apple releases Depth Pro, an AI model that rewrites the rules of 3D vision

Apple’s AI research team has developed a new model that could significantly advance how machines perceive depth, potentially transforming industries ranging from augmented reality to autonomous vehicles.

The system, called Depth Pro, is able to generate detailed 3D depth maps from single 2D images in a fraction of a second—without relying on the camera data traditionally needed to make such predictions.

The technology, detailed in a research paper titled “Depth Pro: Sharp Monocular Metric Depth in Less Than a Second,” is a major leap forward in the field of monocular depth estimation, a process that uses just one image to infer depth.

This could have far-reaching applications across sectors where real-time spatial awareness is key. The model’s creators, led by Aleksei Bochkovskii and Vladlen Koltun, describe Depth Pro as one of the fastest and most accurate systems of its kind.

California Passes Law to Protect Consumer ‘Brain Data’

The new bill amends the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, which grants consumers rights over personal information that is collected by businesses. The term “personal information” already included biometric data (such as your face, voice, or fingerprints). Now it also explicitly includes neural data.

The bill defines neural data as “information that is generated by measuring the activity of a consumer’s central or peripheral nervous system, and that is not inferred from nonneural information.” In other words, data collected from a person’s brain or nerves.

Cupertino wins and loses millions over California's Apple tax ruling

Apple's home city of Cupertino has been granted a win in a dispute with California over its tax dealings with the iPhone maker, but it's only for the short term. In 2023, California state argued that Cupertino was profiting unfairly from how Apple paid tax there. Specifically, any sale of any kind in California was attributed to Cupertino, entirely leaving out other counties and jurisdictions.

As well as the clear benefit to Cupertino of getting the value of state-wide taxation, there was an advantage to Apple. Apple would pay 7.25% state sales tax, of which 1% would go to Cupertino — and then Cupertino would pass over a third of that income right back to Apple

The AAPL earnings call for Q4 2024 has been scheduled for October 31, and will give our first official hint about early iPhone 16 sales.

The fiscal quarter covers July to September. Pre-orders for the new iPhone models opened on September 13, with the phones available in Apple Stores from September 20, so launch orders will be included in the iPhone revenue …

However, Apple doesn’t reveal unit sales, and doesn’t break out the pre-launch from post-launch revenue, so we’ll only get a broad sense of the popularity of the latest models.

Apple long since stopped giving specific guidance on the upcoming quarter, but the company did map out its broad expectations during the previous earnings call.

Did Apple Just Kill Social Apps?

But a lesser-noticed change in iOS 18 — a tweak to an obscure feature that allows users to share their contact lists with various apps — may wind up being more important.

That’s because “contact sync,” as the feature is known by some developers, has played a critical role in the growth of many social and messaging apps for the past two decades. It’s how apps like Instagram, WhatsApp and Snapchat were able to find their footing, by quickly connecting millions of iPhone users to people they already knew, and suggesting other users for them to follow. That early momentum helped kick-start their viral growth, propelling them to the top of the App Store charts.

Judge blocks California's new AI law in case over Kamala Harris deepfake | TechCrunch

a California judge just ruled the state can’t force people to take down election deepfakes – not yet, at least.

AB 2839 targets the distributors of AI deepfakes on social media, specifically if their post resembles a political candidate and the poster knows it’s a fake that may confuse voters. The law is unique because it does not go after the platforms on which AI deepfakes appear, but rather those who spread them. AB 2839 empowers California judges to order the posters of AI deepfakes to take them down or potentially face monetary penalties.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the original poster of that AI deepfake – an X user named Christopher Kohls – filed a lawsuit to block California’s new law as unconstitutional just a day after it was signed. Kohls’ lawyer wrote in a complaint that the deepfake of Kamala Harris is satire that should be protected by the First Amendment.
