Apple brass discussed disclosing 128-million iPhone hack, then decided not to | Ars Technica
"The lack of follow-through is disappointing. Apple has long prioritized the security of the devices it sells. It has also made privacy a centerpiece of its products. Directly notifying those affected by this lapse would have been the right thing to do. We already knew that Google routinely doesn’t notify users when they download malicious Android apps or Chrome extensions. Now we know that Apple has done the same thing."

SNL and Elon Musk: Dogecoin takes center stage - Protocol — The people, power and politics of tech
But Dogecoin was the star of this episode of Saturday Night Live. Speaking of Dogecoin: Saturday's SNL had been billed as something of a coronation for the cryptocurrency, with watch parties set up all over YouTube and plenty of people hoping the coin would hit the crucial $1 mark. But almost as soon as the show began, Dogecoin's price promptly collapsed, dropping nearly a third before recovering slightly. It was such an eventful night for the currency that Robinhood couldn't even keep up. It all culminated with Musk joining the Weekend Update crew and, after repeatedly answering all those "what is Dogecoin?" questions, eventually called it "a hustle."

What a Crossword AI Reveals About Humans' Way With Words | WIRED
For some observers, this may have seemed like just another area of human endeavor where AI now has the upper hand. Reporting on Dr. Fill’s achievement for Slate, Oliver Roeder wrote, “Checkers, backgammon, chess, Go, poker, and other games have witnessed the machines’ invasions, falling one by one to dominant AIs. Now crosswords have joined them.” But a look at how Dr. Fill pulled off this feat reveals much more than merely the latest battle between humans and computers.

New York requires $15 broadband for poor people, promptly gets sued by ISPs | Ars Technica
With this law, New York "seeks to regulate broadband rates," the ISPs' complaint said. "A provision of the recently enacted New York State Fiscal Year 2022 Budget requires wireline, fixed wireless, and satellite broadband providers—no later than June 15, 2021—to begin offering to qualifying low-income consumers high-speed broadband service at a cost to consumers of $15 per month or higher-speed broadband service at a cost to consumers of $20 per month." ISPs claim the state requirement is preempted by federal law.
