Source: https://vediconcepts.org/gurukul-list TYPES OF GURUKULS TODAY The way I see it, these Gurukuls of 21st century can be put into two categories: Priest-Producing Gurukuls Gurukuls which produce priests and pundits. To make our discussion easier, I call them Priest-producing Gurukuls. Professional-Producing Gurukuls Gurukuls which produce Engineers, Doctors, Businessmen and other modern professionals. I call them Professional producing Gurukuls. SOM is bent towards Alternative schools of education, not towards the modern Gurukuls. But, SOM does take ideas from these Gurukuls, as it takes ideas from everything else in the world. The main reason why SOM is less bent towards these modern Gurukuls is because they focus a lot on outer aspects of traditional ashram and Gurukuls - clothing of students, subjects they study, the way of living, etc. The focus on actual realization of the divine is not so strong. SOM wants to focus on God contact first. Outer ways of the school, the way the school looks, the way children behave, can be similar to modern schools. The essential idea is to help children in making deep Divine-contact in their hearts, in the form of love and joy, which would tranform their lives and character. Methods of character building can also be modern in nature, so that they are in-line with modern life. In many of the modern Gurukuls, the students are made to memorize the texts but they may or may not get proper training in character building. This may not apply to all the Gurukuls, but many. Instead, we want SOM children to pursue professions of their choice - Engineering, Medical, Business, etc, without much pressure on them, and keep Spiritual realization, peace, goodness, and security with themselves rest of their lives no matter where they go or with whom they live. SUBJECTS TAUGHT IN GURUKULS TODAY "Vedas are the main subjects that are taught in Vedic gurukuls.
