07 The Divine Romance - Paramahansa Yogananda
07 The Divine Romance - Paramahansa Yogananda
Autobiography of a Yogi had a big influence on me but it was another book that had deepest impact. It was "The Divine Romance" by Paramahansa Yogananda. This book contains many talks of Yogananda on Divine Love, Reincarnation, Mind, Purpose of Life, and other topics. It was the first talk (Chapter 1) of the book that had the deepest impact on me. So far it is my favourite book. As many years have passed since then, I have realised the truth of Chapter 1. It did not give false hope. The unconditional love that it promised, actually exists in Spirituality! #$#

Living with the Himalayan Masters - Swami Rama (Available both as a printed book and as an audio book)
Living with the Himalayan Masters - Swami Rama (Available both as a printed book and as an audio book)
Miraculous life stories of a Himalayan Yogi. Swami Rama was born near himalayan regions. His father was a devoted spiritual practitioner. Before Swami Rama, (known as bhola in childhood) was born, the family was visited by a himalayan sage who happened to be Bhola's Guru from previous lifetimes. He told the father that eventhough they were past child-bearing age, they would give birth to a child who would be a yogi and he (the sage) will take him away for spiritual training shortly after he is born. The would-be parents accepted. Even as a baby, bhola used to hear mantras in his head and had spiritual visions of his Guru. The sage visited him when he was very young. When he was just a few years old, bhola left home to join his Guru in his cave monastery. Bhola had the most wonderful and interesting life there. He tells his story of Himalayan adventures, big cars and expensive clothes, spiritual marvels, yogi miracles, his time with atheists, Gandhi, Tagore, and a lot more. And also his story of how he became a Swami and what followed. Later, he did his education from Oxford University (London) and went to America for teaching people. Do read. It is one of the most interesting spiritual books I know. The Life of Mahatma Gandhi - Louis Fischer
The Life of Mahatma Gandhi - Louis Fischer
Number of pages: 672 This is my favourite book on Gandhi. If you have patience to read such a thick book on Gandhi, I highly recommend it. Even though it is by a foreign author, it is a very thoroughly researched book on Gandhi. Also, the author had a good fortune to spend some time with Gandhi in Gandhi's ashram. Although Gandhi's own autobiography is also good but in that Gandhi talks about himself as if he is a nobody. So the reader also tends to feel that he is a nobody. But this book focusses not just on Gandhi's thought process but also what others thought of him, what impact he had on others, and how he moved the whole nation and hearts of the enemies - British officials and British people living in Britain at that time. These are the kind of things we tend to miss today. Because he is not living today, we tend to ignore the importance of the impact he had on the masses in those days. The people of those times saw him, heard him talk to them, and see him sacrifice his life for them out of love for the suffering people. As I read it, I was spellbound. Some of the incidents, I could hardly believe to be true (especially, General Smutts comments on Gandhi, impact of Gandhi's fasting, how he defeated Britishers many times, and many others). If you really want to know Gandhi, this book is my highest recommendation! Gandhi's own autobiography, "My Experiments with Truth", is also good though. Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux
Story of a Soul: The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux
Child-like story of a Christian Saint - St. Therese of Lisieux. "Story of a Soul" is a very famous autobiography of hers. Actually, she wrote many diaries on command of her seniors and presented to them. After her death at the age of 24, they published it as a book and it became world famous. She is known for her "little way" of reaching God. This book has one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened. Personally, I never read the physical book. I listened to the audiobook many times: https://archive.org/details/StorySoul/ Order Book: https://www.amazon.in/Story-Soul-Autobiography-Additional-Writings/dp/1640322140/ There are no good movies on her. Her quotes: “Without love, deeds, even the most brilliant count as nothing.” “My vocation is love.” “When one loves, one does not calculate.” "For me to become great is impossible. I must bear with myself and my many imperfections; but I will seek out a means of getting to Heaven by a little way—very short and very straight, a little way that is wholly new." "I wanted to find an elevator which would raise me to Jesus, for I am too small to climb the rough stairway of perfection. I searched, then, in the Scriptures for some sign of this elevator, the object of my desires, and I read these words coming from the mouth of Eternal Wisdom: 'Whoever is a LITTLE ONE, let him come to me.'" "The elevator which must raise me to the heavens is Your arms, O Jesus! For that I do not need to grow; on the contrary, I must necessarily remail small, become smaller." "Jesus may hide himself, but we know He is there." "I’m not relying on my own merits, as I have none, but I put my hope in Him who is goodness and holiness Himself." “The world's thy ship and not thy home.” “Holiness consists simply in doing God's will, and being just what God wants us to be.” “When I die, I will send down a shower of roses from the heavens,I will spend my heaven by doing good on earth.” -- Audio book: https://archive.org/details/StorySoul/ Order Book: https://www.amazon.in/Story-Soul-Autobiography-Additional-Writings/dp/1640322140/

A Short life of Sri Ramakrishna
A Short life of Sri Ramakrishna
A short, 122 page biography of Sri Ramakrishna, Guru of Swami Vivekananda. His life was full of love and devotion towards Goddess Kali. If you know his life already, Chapter 5 is the most interesting. FREE PDF: https://www.ramakrishnavivekananda.info/sriramakrishna.pdf SWAMI VIVEKANANDA on SRI RAMAKRISHNA: "Sri Ramakrishna is far greater than the disciples understand him to be. He is the embodiment of infinite spiritual ideas capable of development in infinite ways....One glance of his gracious eyes can create a hundred thousand Vivekanandas at this instant. If he chooses now, instead, to work through me, making me his instrument, I can only bow to his will." "As Shri Ramakrishna used to love you, as I love you, come, love the world like that." "If I have told you one word for truth, it was his (Ramakrishna’s) and his alone, and if I have told you many things which were not true, which were not correct, which were not beneficial to the human race, they were all mine, and on me is the responsibility." "He used to love me intensely, which made many quite jealous of me." "In the presence of my Master I found out that man could be perfect, even in this body. Those lips never cursed anyone, never even criticised anyone. Those eyes were beyond the possibility of seeing evil, that mind had lost the power of thinking evil. He saw nothing but good. That tremendous purity, that tremendous renunciation is the one secret of spirituality." "My Master used to say, “This world is a huge lunatic asylum where all men are mad, some after money, some after women, some after name or fame, and a few after God. I prefer to be mad after God. God is the philosophers’ stone that turns us to gold in an instant; the form remains, but the nature is changed — the human form remains, but no more can we hurt or sin.”" "Ramakrishna Paramahamsa came for the good of the world. Call him a man, or God, or an Incarnation, just as you please. Accept him each in your light. He who will bow before him will be converted into purest gold that very moment. Go with this message from door to door, if you can, my boy, and all your disquietude will be at an end." "Shri Ramakrishna used to say, “As long as I live, so long do I learn.”" "We hear in the West about worshipping woman, but this is usually for her youth and beauty. This man meant by worshipping woman, that to him every woman’s face was that of the Blissful Mother, and nothing but that. I myself have seen this man standing before those women whom society would not touch, and falling at their feet bathed in tears, saying, ‘Mother, in one form Thou art in the street, and in another form Thou art the universe. I salute Thee, Mother, I salute Thee.’ Think of the blessedness of that life from which all carnality has vanished, which can look upon every woman with that love and reverence, with every woman’s face of the Divine Mother, the Blissful One, the Protectress of the human race, shines upon it!" "Without studying Ramakrishna Paramhansa first, one can never understand the real import of the Vedas, the Vedanta, of the Bhagavata and the other Puranas. His life is a searchlight of infinite power thrown upon the whole mass of Indian religious thought. He was the living commentary to the Vedas and to their aim He had lived in one life the whole cycle of the national religious existence in India." Gandhi the Man - Eknath Easwaran (Available both as a printed book and as an audio book)
Gandhi the Man - Eknath Easwaran (Available both as a printed book and as an audio book)
Gandhi's spiritual biography. A light reading. This book is for those who have some affinity towards Gandhi and want to know that how could Gandhi do what he did. I am firmly convinced that he was not a politician at heart. He emptied his selfishness and thus he became an instrument of the divine in helping free India. No one can say with clarity that why British left India but if we really read what all happened during those times, I think we can deduce that Gandhi had a big role to play in helping free India. This book does not talk about who freed India, it only talks about Gandhi's Spiritual side - a rare & well-written book on the topic. The author, Eknath Easwaran, is one of the greatest authors and fans of Gandhi. He is also a true spiritual practitioner and I think he is at least a fairly advanced one. Be Love Now - Ram Dass
Be Love Now - Ram Dass
Author: Dr. Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) & Rameshwar Das This is the story of Dr. Richard Alpert, a Harvard Psychiatrist and Professor who came to India in search of Saintly people and met Neem Karoli Baba and got transformed. This video gives a part of the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nilZxBwlJ7k Actually, the author's other book "Be Here Now" is world famous. As per my knowledge, that book is not available in the correct form in India. Therefore, I selected this other book by the same author. This book covers very similar material from a more loving perspective. But if you have not read "Autobiography of a Yogi", I would recommend to read that first. That is not just a book. It will tell you about a path to take to bring unconditional love, joy and strength in your life. Spiritual books ignite the desire to tread a spiritual path. That book gives the path which brings to us all the love that we have desired or crave for. That path is Kriya Yoga. But if you have read that book, then this is also a good one.
