Arvind Gupta recounts the story of a very inspiring book on Education. DIVASWAPNA (meaning DAY DREAMING) is the story of an imaginary teacher Laxmishankar who despite the rigid and bureaucratic structure of the school tries to imbue life in it. He soon realizes that Stories went straight to children’s hearts. He does away with boring state text books and with the money thus saved he starts a classroom library. The dream is NOT THE WORD, BUT THE WORLD. DIVASWAPNA was originally written in Gujarati in 1931. It took almost 60 years to get this iconic book into English. The translation from the original Gujarati was done by Chitranjan Pathak – Gijubhai’s son-in-law after he retired as a principal of a school in Mumbai. The foreword was written by Prof. Krishna Kumar – ex Director of the NCERT. The National Book Trust (NBT) India has brought out DIVASWAPNA into 11 Indian languages.
