Kit4Curious - Science ctivity kit @imust
Kit4Curious - Science ctivity kit @imust
This is not by Arvind Gupta. A major practical problem with Arvind Gupta's science activity videos is that the material used in the activities is difficult to find. When I tried these activities with children, I had to run to many different shops to find the required material for each activity. The videos are good for inspiration, but in practice, getting a good physics kit with all the needed components works much better. This science kit seems to be good. I had ordered a kit very similar to this one, and it was good. A link to videos and some pictorial reading material is sent along with the kit. You won't have to depend on Arvind Gupta's videos to use the kit, but you will be able to do many of these same activities using the kit. Please note that this is just a recommendation. I am not trying to sell anything.

GENERATOR FROM MOTOR - ENGLISH - 22MB.wmv
You can make a generator from an old toy motor. Mount a 9-volt toy motor and connect its terminals to a LED. Attach the small pulley on the motor axle to a large pulley. As you crank the large pulley, the smaller one will rotate the motor at a fast speed. This will produce a current which will light a LED -- which in this case is a streetlight. http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/toys/Generatorfrommotor.html This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust. NO MAGNET MOTOR - ENGLISH - 31MB.wmv
Instead of a permanent magnet this motor has an electromagnet which is made by winding insulated copper wire on a sewing machine bobbin. Its spinning coil is made out a meter long insulated copper wire. On one end the entire insulation is scraped. On the other only 3-sides are scraped. The remaining insulation forms an ON/OFF switch. A 1.5-volt battery is sufficient to run this splendid motor. http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/toys/Nomagnetmotor.html This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust. SYRINGE GENERATOR - ENGLISH - 23MB.wmv
This wonderful Syringe Generator can be made in just 15 minutes. Place 2 strong Neodymium Magnets in the barrel of a plastic syringe. The rubber piston will make the end stopper. Now wind 700-1000 turns of thin insulated copper wire on the barrel. Scrape the ends of insulation and attach a LED. Hold the Syringe in one hand and shake it to move the magnets. The moving magnetic field will produce a small current in the coil -- enough to light up an LED. http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/toys/magnetictorch.html This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust. Simplest Telescope | Hindi
Simplest Telescope | Hindi
This really Simple Telescope was designed by SASTA – the South African Agency for Science & Technology. The telescope’s tube consists of 3 cardboard tubes, each 30-cm long. There are two lenses – the BIG OBJECTIVE is Convex-concave and the SMALL EYEPIECE is Concave-concave. The three tubes of slightly different diameters fit into each other and can easily slide. Thus the length of the tube can be increased and decreased. The sliding of the tubes helps in adjusting the focal length to view far and near objects clearly. These sliding tubes are called as TELESCOPIC TUBES. This is the small eyepiece with a focal length 4-cm and diameter of 1.8-cm. The larger OBJECTIVE LENS has a focal length of 70-cm and a diameter of 6.7 cm. Hold both lenses in your hands and adjust the distance between them to see a far away object clearly. This schematic diagram shows the RAY DIAGRAM of the telescope. First glue the outer rim of the EYEPIECE on the lens holder. Then glue the EYEPIECE to the small end of the tubes. The tubes can easily expand / contract and help you in getting a clear image of a far away object. Finally glue the BIG OBJECTIVE on the big end of the tubes. Now the telescope is ready. In the expanded position the telescope might be 85-cm long. In the contracted position it might be just 30-cm long. Now point the big lens towards what you wish to observe. Adjust the focal length by sliding the tubes. Soon you will see a clear image of your desired object. You can watch birds, wild life or gaze at the moon with this SIMPLEST TELESCOPE. In this fascinating model children can levitate a CD magnetically. Take a CD box base with a 4-cm tall central stem. Stick ring magnets with the same poles up along the periphery of two CDs. Place both CDs with the magnets facing each other. As the same polarity magnets face each other the CDs repel and the top one levitates. Once spun the top CD keeps rotating for a very long time. http://www.arvindguptatoys.com/toys/maglevcd.html This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust. Motor Car | Hindi
This small toy car is made from its kit. However, you can try and improvise it yourself. Here you can see this car moving forwards. The car is powered by a 9-volt battery and a toy motor. As you switch ON the car moves. All these parts will assemble and make a car. On a base board is mounted a 9-volt battery, On-Off switch, and a toy motor with a pulley. Here is the underside of the base board with slits to snap the wheel mountings. When the switch is put ON the motor and the pulley spins. Here are two pairs of wheels, axles, a pulley, rubber band and their mountings. Press fit the pulley on the axle. Place the rubber band on the pulley. Then push a loose mounting on both sides of the axle. Finally, press fit the wheels on both ends of the axle. Assemble the second pair of wheels. Only there will be no pulley in this pair. The wheel mounting have lugs which snap fit into the base. Fix both pairs of wheels on to the car chassis. The wheel pair with the pulley should be just below the motor. Finally connect the motor pulley to the axle pulley with a rubber band. The car is assembled and ready to run. On operating the switch the motor will spin. The drive will be transmitted from the motor to the axle via the pulley-rubber band. On keeping the car on the floor it will move forwards. This is a delightful toy for all children. Simple Balloon Boat | English
First enjoy the working of this amazing Balloon Boat. For making this Simple Balloon Boat all you need is a piece of Styrofoam or Thermocole, a good quality balloon, a triangular rubber piece, a bendable straw and some glue. First mark the outline of the boat on the piece of Styrofoam and then cut it with a pen knife. This is how the Styrofoam boat will look like. Apply glue on a piece of triangular rubber and stick it on the boat. The short end of the straw will rest on the rubber incline. Tie the balloon to the short end of the flexible straw with the help of a rubber band. The compressed air in the balloon will escape and propel the boat forward. Rest the short end of the straw on the rubber support and then tape the straw to the top of the Styrofoam boat. Now the boat it ready for its maiden launch. See the underbelly of the boat. Then blow through the open end of the straw to inflate the balloon well. Shut this end with your thumb to prevent the air from escaping. Then place the boat in a large tub of water. As the compressed air from the balloon will escape it will propel the boat forward. This wonderful toy also demonstrates Newton’s Third Law of Motion – that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
