THIS LEATHER IS MADE FROM GRAINS 👜🌾 Share this video if you want to see more leather being replaced with plants! 🌱 The team at UNCAGED Innovations are transforming plant proteins from corn, wheat and soy to mimic leather's natural collagen structure, creating the same unique properties and feel! Co-founders Stephanie Downs and Dr. Xiaokun Wang showed us around their facility in New York and taught us SO much! What's remarkable is that these materials can be infused with custom scents like lavender and vanilla, they can also be dyed using mineral pigments, and are embossed with traditional leather patterns.  For years, people have been looking for ways to create materials that look and feel like leather without using plastic and now it’s possible! Uncaged Innovations rigorously tests their plant-based materials, ensuring their sustainable alternative can match traditional leather's performance, as well as can biodegrade at the end of its life. Did you know: The leather industry processes over a billion animal hides annually, and the tanning process uses toxic chromium that pollutes the environment, harms workers, and consumes up to 17,000 liters of water per kilogram of leather. Not to mention the plastic protective coatings added afterward! These plant-based alternatives are being used in everything from designer shoes, wallets, handbags and even luxury car interiors. It takes nearly 8 flawless cow hides to make a single car seat, what if instead we just used plants!? And no, this grain isn’t taking away from the food industry, it’s a byproduct of current agricultural systems. Not to mention that 80% of the world’s soy is used for animal feed (feed grain) anyway, but that’s a conversation for another day. 🎥: Going Green Media Ben Brown Ciara Doyle #sustainablefashion #ecodesign #nature #sustainability | 371 comments on LinkedIn
