SelfControl is a free and open-source application for Mac OS X (10.5 or above) that lets you block your own access to distracting websites, your mail servers, or anything else on the Internet. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blacklist, and click "Start." Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites--even if you restart your computer or delete the application.
‘For most people today (9/27/2011) running a typical system, try not to go over 30,000 songs if you value the user experience. There is no doubt this will not be an issue in the future.’
Vital. ‘The Marked Bonus Pack is a collection of scripts, commands and services. Some work with multiple editors, some are specific to certain editors. The Services will generally work with any editor that has the necessary capabilities. The rest are organized in folders based on the application they work with.’
Combine this small, easily customizable AppleScript with a keyboard shortcut utility (like FastScripts) to quickly toggle an application forward and back. I use this for Terminal and TaskPaper.
Brett Terpstra: Create TextExpander Group Download URL
“Select a group and enter your preferred prefix for the shortcuts assigned to each snippet. The resulting url may be downloaded as a custom .textexpander file, or used with TextExpander’s ‘Install from URL’ feature. Using the latter will provide automatic updates if the group is added to or changed, custom prefixes are preserved.”
Prevent security risks from stuff like Firesheep.
“When you connect to the Internet through an unprotected wireless network, such as at a coffeeshop or an airport, where you don’t have to enter a security key, you’re putting yourself at risk. Attackers connected to the same network can easily intercept your unencrypted traffic and log in as you to services such as Facebook, Amazon, and LinkedIn.”
For when an app has a keyboard shortcut symbol and you can't figure out which key they mean.
“The symbols below appear in menus and represent keys that are used in keyboard shortcuts. Some of these symbols also appear in the help and are referred to as ‘modifier keys.’”
"Freedom is an application that disables networking on an Apple computer for up to eight hours at a time." Only restarting can circumvent the time limit you've sent.
"One of the great features of Mac OS X has aways been the built-in spelling checker. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to see what words you've added. But with Dictionary Cleaner, a convienient System Preferences pane for Mac OS X, now you can."
On the characteristic lack of usability in open source projects, and why. "The distributed, collaborative nature of open source software works for developer-level software, but works against user-level software. Imagine a motion picture produced like a large open source project. Different scenes written and directed by different people, spread across the world. Editing decisions forged by group consensus on mailing lists. The result would be unfocused, incoherent, and unenjoyable."
Spaced repetition! "Designed to help you remember facts (such as words and phrases in a foreign language) as easily, quickly and efficiently as possible. To do this, it tracks how well you remember each fact, and uses that info to schedule review times.
"The MacPorts Project is an open-source community initiative to design an easy-to-use system for compiling, installing, and upgrading either command-line, X11 or Aqua based open-source software on the Mac OS X operating system."
