Gary Chun again!
“Chaz Bundick and his crew manned their spaceship last night at Nextdoor, and took the good ship Toro y Moi and an audience of eager passengers to a nearby galaxy of sound and rhythm, forward thrusters go.”
Honolulu Pulse: Pulse Picks: More ideas for the days ahead (April 21, 2011)
Friend and ally Gary Chun gives COTQ and the Toro Y Moi show another shoutout in the Honolulu Pulse picks. Too kind.
“Arguably the busiest indie rock band in Honolulu, Clones of the Queen had six shows lined up this month, and will be concluding their run this weekend and Thursday. Band member Matthew McVickar (also known as solo act Lapwing) is promoting his first club concert, and he got a great first mainland act in Toro Y Moi, the retro-pop-funk band led by Chaz Bundick. He and the band, along with fellow indie noteworthy band Painted Highways, will open for Bundick and company Saturday night at NextDoor starting at 9. Tickets are $20.”
‘Sustainable, Compassionate, Resilient Communities’
“Kanu Hawaii is a tax-exempt, nonprofit corporation that is overseen by a volunteer board of directors and administered by a small staff. In 2005, the founders of Kanu Hawaii asked each other three questions:
1. What do we love about Hawaii? Our connection to place, the strength of our communities, our diverse traditions, our island values.
2. What concerns us about the future? Shrinking opportunities, environmental degradation, the loss of communities, inequality, apathy, greed, intolerance… in Hawaii and throughout the world.
3. What can we do about it? This question had no easy answer. How do you build a movement when so many of us feel powerless in the face of huge problems? How do you demand change without compromising our island values?”
Honolulu expat Alex Hungtai put up this mix a little while ago. Good collection of gospel, old rock-n-roll, funk, some hip-hop and jazz. Fi is very lo. A great glimpse into the inspiration behind the new Dirty Beaches album.
“Co-hosts Burt Lum and Ryan Ozawa take a look at the latest tech news and happenings. Then they talk about HTML 5 with Dan Leuck and Matt McVickar.”
I was on Ryan and Burt's weekly show for my involvement with Ocupop's redesign of the HTML5 logo. It was my first time on live radio. Fun!
“…here’s a Q&A with Matthew, who was kind enough to agree to an e-mail interview the day after the HTML5 logo was unveiled. He was quick to point out that it was a team effort, and that Ocupop Creative Director Michael Nieling headed the project and designed the logo itself.”
Details on the new Oahu Bike Plan, which includes 600 miles of planned bike lanes and trails. They're trying to be pragmatic, which is nice. Here's hoping this actually happens. I'd be STOKED.
