Use a notched trowel to spread a layer of thinset mortar that's suitable for your tile onto the clean surface, such as Mapei Ultraflex LFT or Laticrete 253 (gold). Apply the mixture in the same direction to prevent the formation of air pockets. Before applying any adhesive to the tiles, wet the back of each tile with a sponge.

4. Lay the Ceramic Tile: Press each tile firmly into the mortar. Do this by hand rather than with a rubber mallet or hammer. Tools like this can cause hairline cracks that may only worsen over time.

5. Place Spacers: Use 1/16-inch spacers to help keep your grout lines as evenly proportioned as possible. This is a telltale sign of a professional-looking tile job.

6. Cut Your Tile to Fit: With a water-cooled tile saw, cut the tile into the sizes you need to fit corners and other spaces where the regular-size tiles cannot accommodate. Note: A standard tile cutter won't cut it (literally). So, it's critical to use a tile saw, as it prevents chipping — and don't forget your protective eyewear and gear!

7. Apply Grout Release: Once the mortar sets, remove the spacers, clean and dry your tile, and apply one to two coats of grout release to the surface of the tiles, using a rubber float. This will ensure that your grout doesn't stain the surface of the tile.

Continue with subsequent courses: Raise the reference string by an amount equal to the height of the breeze block plus the size of the mortar joint. Level the string and apply another course of mortar to lay the next course of breeze blocks. Level the course using the reference string. Continue in the same manner until the desired area is entirely filled.

Verify the plumbness: At regular intervals, every three or four courses, verify the plumbness of the wall using either the plumb line or the level in order to prevent any deviation from the straight verticality you want to achieve.

Confine, if necessary: If your breeze block walls are load-bearing, it's advisable to confine them by tie columns and tie beams with sufficient horizontal and vertical clearance to allow the absorption of any possible movement.

Use horizontal reinforcement: If necessary, you can reinforce your breeze block wall with two 3/16″ diameter grade 60 rods embedded in the horizontal joint mortar once every two courses, anchoring them at the ends to a vertical reinforcing element.

Use vertical reinforcement: For vertical reinforcement, a 3/16″ diameter grade 60 rod may be installed every two or three units, embedded in the mortar joint and anchored at either end.

Grout and clean: After grouting the joints, clean any excess mortar using a plastic bristle brush and a damp cloth.

The right grout can really make or break the look of your installation. Not only is it important from a durability and maintenance standpoint, but the color choice can really influence the overall aesthetic. So how do you know where to begin?

The most important thing is to consider the tile choice. Regardless of where you purchase your tile (although bonus points if you purchased from Riad Tile), the distributer or manufacturer will more than likely have a recommended grout type for your specific tile. It’s always a good choice to start there.

Different tile types will determine what kind of grout it is recommended you use. Larger format tile will use a sanded grout to prevent shrinking and allow for a stronger bond. For smaller format tile, or mosaics, an unsanded grout is recommended to prevent scratching. While a ceramic tile can usually use most any type of grout, it is typically recommended to use a flexible grout to allow for the stone’s natural movement as the temperature changes.

Any designer or contractor will tell you to anticipate some movement, especially depending on where you live. Where we’re located in Texas, it is quite common to have foundational shifts in your home. Your actual foundation might have a lot to do with that as well. The right grout can alleviate some inevitable cracks that will happen throughout the lifespan of your home. From experience, I can tell you that cracked grout is much easier to fix than a cracked tile.

It's also important to follow your manufacturer or distributor’s recommended sealer (and order of use) for your installed product. While grout can also be cleaned, it will be much easier to maintain in the long run if you are following your installation guidelines.

As you can probably imagine, color is also crucial! In most cases, it’s a safe bet to select a color that closely matches the material. At a minimum, we would recommend that it is the same hue. This creates a seamless installation and doesn’t draw attention to any flaws. Tile installation is done by hand and it’s normal to have some variances even with mesh mounted mosaics.

For a while, there was a contrasting grout trend where white tile was often grouted with black grout. It was extremely difficult to achieve a perfect install and often just looked sloppy. Moral of the story - keep it timeless! Pick something close in color to your material.

We don’t hide our love affair with Zellige, the glazed Moroccan tile that has become synonymous with Riad tile.
