I'm guessing most of you know what a mood theme is, but in case you don't, you can choose a "mood" when you make a post, and if you have a mood theme installed, it will attach a little image to the post. You can create your own mood theme and upload the images one by one, but it's pretty tedious. Fortunately, I found an awesome post that let me make a script for uploading the Guardian theme to my journal. After I made the script, I thought I could save everyone else some time if I shared it with you folks! After all, it's already made, so why not?

This morning I saw a tweet linking to one of my favourite videos, namely a restored and colorised short film of Paris in the late 1890s. It's amazing: the camera just rolled wherever it was put, giving you a glimpse of what the city was like at the time (you can see people looking right at the camera, too, wondering what is happening - it's both amusing and touching). It's quite fascinating for me to see those places I go to on a regular basis as they were back then... I then realised the artist, Denis Shiryaev, had restored other videos from other cities around the world and I thought some of you might find them of interest too.

就 (jìu) is an extremely useful word that is, as far as i can tell, pretty difficult for non-native speakers to use in a way that sounds natural — people put it in a Lot of places and they mean sliiiiightly different things. but i’ve seen a few posts about 就 and all of them have struck me as slightly incorrect. so let’s go over a few uses of 就 (but definitely not all), with some examples!

As you probably know, different kinds of tea need to be steeped at different temperatures to ensure you are getting the best flavour out of your tea. This is particularly true of delicate whole-leaf green teas which may be most optimally steeped at temperatures as low as 70°C (155°F). But how do you know when to stop your kettle at a lower temperature than boiling? There are of course temperature-controlled kettles out there, but if all you have is a kettle or a pot in your kitchen then you can use the traditional Chinese methods of determining water temperature by paying close attention to the way the water changes as it boils.

There are a lot of things I love about Guardian, and Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan, but at the top of the list has to be their incredible chemistry and their body language with each other. From the way they look at each other and flirt, to the way their bodies are simply attuned to each other's movements. So, I've decided to do a re-watch of the show, focusing on my favorite bits of Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan interactions. A lot of the expressions and reactions in the earlier episodes take on a lot more meaning in hindsight!

Today, by which I mean "yesterday" because typing this took forever, I decided to spend my day doing something I'd been putting off for months–figuring out what the hell is going on with Zhao Yunlan's apartment (and also Shen Wei's, because their layout is actually the same). So this is what I came up with:

I love food! Not just cooking and eating, but also feeding people and thinking about how the food we eat is grown, processed, transported ect., and thinking about what food means to people. Of course, I love fiction that focuses on food and explores these topics. Since watching ep 3 for the first time (i.e. january), this has been knocking around in my brain. In ep 3, we see JZXuan waltzing into the same inn as the Yunmeng Trio, booting them, and then rejecting “bad tea”. Ever since, I’ve watched a lot of tea being poured in CQL. It got me thinking, what kind of tea would different sects prefer and what would different characters drink?

So here’s what happened: I recorded a guest appearance on Fangirl Happy Hour in which I talked about The Untamed, and in the course of that conversation, I promised to write a brief primer for The Untamed for the benefit of Renay’s listeners, which she could then put in the show notes for the episode. As a translator, I like to normalise the usage of pinyin honorifics and titles the way Japanese honorifics and titles are normalised in anime/manga. If you’re familiar with anime/manga, I’m sure this list is familiar to you: -san -sama -kun -kaasan -niisan -neesan -sensei -senpai -chan -bucho -shacho. I see no reason at all why we can’t do the same with Chinese honorifics except for the easily translated occupational ones.

If it gets big enough I'll make some attempt to sort it. Do please comment with additional recs, including self-recs! I need nerdier feeds, always.
