PSA to Good Omens fandom (and anyone else interested)
Since I see people are already starting to ask the important questions like "are demons required to keep kosher?" (OYSTERS Y/N?) and paying attention to the distinctly Jewish threads within this extremely Christian eschatology:
Guardian 镇魂 is about to end this week in China, and I thought, even though YT is slowly subbing it, they aren't translating the titles for each episode, which is a pity because these titles are ridiculously fun!
Good evening. Canapé? Sleeve garters were invented in the 19th century along with factory-made shirts, which had just one sleeve length: extra long. If you were not extra long, and didn't want your cuffs to flop over your hands and get soiled, you hiked the excess fabric up above your elbows, where it would remain concealed beneath your suit jacket, and cinched it out of the way with garters. They're mostly obsolete now because shirts come in a wider range of standard sizes, though they're part of an enduring aesthetic in some professions, including jazz musicians, bartenders, and card dealers.
Jim Breen's Japanese Page/Jimu.Buri-n no Nihon pe-ji
Welcome to my Japanese Page. As many readers of this page will know, I have an on-going interest in Japan, its people and language. This has led to a number of activities bringing together Japanese and my professional activities in computing and telecommunications. I have assembled this set of pages: (a) to provide information about a number of my projects in the area of Japanese computing and dictionaries, (b) to provide links to some of the resources available on the WWW on Japanese matters.
Some thoughts on character naming conventions & cultural significance of name-shortening
I’m noticing a growing trend of people referring to characters from The Untamed by given name only (my theory is this is because of Netflix. Is it because of Netflix?), and while I’m starting to get more used to it and am also actively interrogating my own emotional reactions to it, I do want to provide some of my thoughts on cultural notes regarding naming conventions.
I'm sick to the point where I get light-headed folding laundry, so I said on twitter I would do a post explaining all those Chinese fandoms. Obviously, I cannot explain "all" those Chinese fandoms, this is an overview of Chinese fandoms that have an English-language presence that I am aware of.
Okay, this is amazing and the headline does it no justice at all: The Guardian: Revealed: the illustrious past of a mystery portrait I mean, it starts out super-cool: "the earliest-known European portrait miniature to depict a black sitter"! gorgeous picture! yet more evidence with which to browbeat the people who believe that black people weren't invented until 1940! THEN IT ESCALATES:
One thing I really enjoy in Guardian is how the show uses food. I adore food in fiction and while food isn’t a focus of Guardian there are lot of food based moments that I love. I’ve been trying to write something about this but mostly I just want to squee. There is some fierce feeding people going on! And some lovely meals as a found family!
