forestofglory | Rec List: Food
I love food! Not just cooking and eating, but also feeding people and thinking about how the food we eat is grown, processed, transported ect., and thinking about what food means to people. Of course, I love fiction that focuses on food and explores these topics. This is a list of media that does interesting and clever things with food: food used to tell us about the character or the world. I hope you find something to enjoy!
(Nirvana in Fire Character Guide)
First things first: Nirvana in Fire takes place in a fictional kingdom in about 6th century China. The kingdom in question is Da Liang (sometimes called Great Liang). As was the custom in the olden days, it exists in a
state of near-constant warfare with neighbouring lands.

A light overview of some Chinese-media fandoms
I'm sick to the point where I get light-headed folding laundry, so I said on twitter I would do a post explaining all those Chinese fandoms. Obviously, I cannot explain "all" those Chinese fandoms, this is an overview of Chinese fandoms that have an English-language presence that I am aware of.
The Untamed: A Primer - Reading the End
So here’s what happened: I recorded a guest appearance on Fangirl Happy Hour in which I talked about The Untamed, and in the course of that conversation, I promised to write a brief primer for The Untamed for the benefit of Renay’s listeners, which she could then put in the show notes for the episode. Three thousand-odd words later, I had to admit that my primer had gotten out of control and I would need to post it at my own gd blog. Here the fuck it is. Click the arrow next to any of these questions to see the…

Some thoughts on character naming conventions & cultural significance of name-shortening
I’m noticing a growing trend of people referring to characters from The Untamed by given name only (my theory is this is because of Netflix. Is it because of Netflix?), and while I’m starting to get more used to it and am also actively interrogating my own emotional reactions to it, I do want to provide some of my thoughts on cultural notes regarding naming conventions.

What characters call each other (and themselves) in the Guardian Novel
As a translator, I like to normalise the usage of pinyin honorifics and titles the way Japanese honorifics and titles are normalised in anime/manga. If you’re familiar with anime/manga, I’m sure this list is familiar to you: -san -sama -kun -kaasan -niisan -neesan -sensei -senpai -chan -bucho -shacho. I see no reason at all why we can’t do the same with Chinese honorifics except for the easily translated occupational ones.
Oh my stars
Good evening. Canapé? Sleeve garters were invented in the 19th century along with factory-made shirts, which had just one sleeve length: extra long. If you were not extra long, and didn't want your cuffs to flop over your hands and get soiled, you hiked the excess fabric up above your elbows, where it would remain concealed beneath your suit jacket, and cinched it out of the way with garters. They're mostly obsolete now because shirts come in a wider range of standard sizes, though they're part of an enduring aesthetic in some professions, including jazz musicians, bartenders, and card dealers.
PSA to Good Omens fandom (and anyone else interested)
Since I see people are already starting to ask the important questions like "are demons required to keep kosher?" (OYSTERS Y/N?) and paying attention to the distinctly Jewish threads within this extremely Christian eschatology:

Tea Preferences by CQL Sects - a Headcanon
Since watching ep 3 for the first time (i.e. january), this has been knocking around in my brain. In ep 3, we see JZXuan waltzing into the same inn as the Yunmeng Trio, booting them, and then rejecting “bad tea”. Ever since, I’ve watched a lot of tea being poured in CQL. It got me thinking, what kind of tea would different sects prefer and what would different characters drink?
a thread on diminutives in Chinese and maybe something on punny nicknames?
I don't think any actual productivity is happening today so why not a thread on diminutives in Chinese and maybe something on punny nicknames? Inspired by friend-Ozzie who lamented that English is the LEAST AFFECTIONATE LANGUAGE EVER OMG WHY IT SUCKS.

Mando'a Lessons - YouTube
Videos on the Mandalorian language, Mando'a, seen primarily in the Republic Commando series. Mando'a is a simple language to learn, as it was designed to be learned by people of all ages. The vocabulary is somewhat limited as the development was stopped. This can be compensated for by creating compound words but this alone doesnt make it a full language and thus it can be difficult to speak in certain situations. There are multiple separate fan projects trying to expand mando'a. Check my links for ways you can interact with me!
