Biographical Dictionary of Occupied China (BDOC)
Biographical Dictionary of Occupied China (BDOC)

As part of the ENP-China project, the Biographical Dictionary of Occupied China (hereafter BDOC) aims to fill one of the main gaps in the studies of the Japanese occupation of China (1937-1945). Indeed, there is no specific biographical dictionary on the subject, whether in Chinese, Japanese or Western languages. Although it does not claim to be exhaustive — far from it! — the BDOC is designed to help understand the Japanese occupation state in China through the multiple biographical trajectories of its actors. The number of entries (currently 170) will increase in the years to come. Initially published in French, they will eventually be translated into English. In addition to internal references to the BDOC, each entry contains hyperlinks to other online dictionaries, such as the Biographical Dictionary of the International Labor Movement (known as “the Maitron”), the Biographical Dictionary of Republican China (known as “the Boorman”, abbr. BDRC) and the Historical Dictionary of Japan. Each entry ends with a list of the sources on which it is based. The complete references are listed in the “Sources” tab. Photographs are taken from WYW and online sources which can be accessed with a click. For other sources, a caption is provided.

The World of the Japanese Illustrated Book: The Gerhard Pulverer Collection
The World of the Japanese Illustrated Book: The Gerhard Pulverer Collection
The Pulverer Collection, acquired in its entirety by the Freer Gallery of Art in 2007, includes numerous rare and pristine examples of Japanese illustrated books produced in the Edo period and beyond. For more than thirty years Dr. Gerhard Pulverer, a renowned medical researcher in Germany, and his wife Rosemarie traveled the world and assembled the collection. Their holdings of more than 900 titles encompass almost 2,200 volumes that range in date from the early seventeenth century to the 1970s. Today the Pulverer Collection is regarded as one of the most outstanding and comprehensive collections of Japanese illustrated books outside Japan. This site marks the initial phase of an ongoing project to make all of the volumes available online. Cataloguing is now in progress, and we are also adding short scholarly entries for many of the titles (available on the commentary tab for individual titles). We are adding new titles every month and are expanding information about these books through these essays and other features. Please note that this is a work in progress--we are regularly making updates to improve the site. We encourage you to return often and to offer feedback on the project. Generous support from the Getty Foundation through the Online Scholarly Catalogue Initiative (OSCI), with additional support from the Anne van Biema Endowment Fund, has enabled the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery to make the Pulverer Collection available to researchers, bibliophiles, and art lovers around the globe.

Electronic Journal of Contemporary Japanese Studies | EJCJS
The electronic journal of contemporary japanese studies (ejcjs) is a journal in the Social Sciences and Humanities that is dedicated to publishing academic research and scholarly writing on all issues related to contemporary Japanese society, economy, politics, literature, theatre, cinema, and culture. The journal adopts a multi-disciplinary stance in the hope that it will contribute to a deeper and broader understanding of Japan and the Japanese people as an integral part of global 21st century life and that it will, consequently, help to improve our understanding of the totality of human experience. As such, therefore, we encourage submissions in all areas of sociology, economics, political science, and cultural studies that have contemporary Japan as their principal area of focus but that also relate Japan to broader developments elsewhere in the world. Contributions are posted as and when we receive, review, and edit them. ejcjs is committed to working towards sustainable development worldwide. Consequently, our editorial policy is to offer access to all pages in this journal free of charge and only over the internet. ejcjs operates an unusual publishing model in that, in addition to there being no charge for access to our material, we do not charge administrative fees to our contributors. Our journal is financed purely on the basis of the goodwill provided by our readers, our contributors, our editorial board, and any other benefits that we can gain by publishing over the internet.
