Sundowns coach Rulani wins big CAF Award
What a night for the young coach. Mamelodi Sundowns‘ Rulani Mokwena has been named CAF Coach of the Year. MAMELODI SUNDOWNS COACH RULANI MOKWENA WINS CAF COACH OF THE YEAR Thanks to his leadership, the Kabo Yellow coach was honoured on Thursday night as Sundowns won the African Football League title in November 2023 before losing the CAF Champions League semifinal match to Esperance in April. Ronwen Williams was named the Goalkeeper of the Year, while Thapelo Maseko was crowned as the Most Promising Player. COACH RULANI MOKWENA NOT HAPPY AFTER CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The club known as Kabo Yellow won the African Football League on 5 November 2023, before they sealed the DStv Premiership for the seventh consecutive last week. The Nedbank Cup final is coming for Sundowns against Orlando Pirates in June, yet coach Mokwena is not a happy man because of the CAFCL loss to Esperance in the semi-finals. “No, I’m still reeling, and I’m talking personally. Someone tried to console me and said you have a double already with the AFL and the league, so why are you still reeling? But I’m reeling because I feel like I’ve let the club down, let the supporters down and this group down because it’s my job to lead,” Mokwena said via The Citizen on whether the two trophies have made him feel better. The Sundowns tactician, who is still only 37 years old, added: “When we fail, it’s my job to stand in front and assume the responsibility so I don’t think it will make up for it. We deserved to be in the semi-finals of the champions league and based on the performance in the second leg, I think we did enough to give ourselves a chance to be in the final but things didn’t go our way. “When I say you need luck in the Champions League, that’s exactly what I mean. I’ve got to accept, but it doesn’t minimise the pain, and I’ve already apologised to the club, and I can apologise again for that failure and take it on my shoulders, but that doesn’t mean you don’t try again because eventually we will win the Champions League,” the Sundowns mentor added. JAYDEN ADAMS FROM STELLENBOSCH As previously reported across local media, Sundowns set eyes on the 23-year-old midfielder from Iddas Valley, Stellenbosch. According to his boss, Kabo Yellow did make an enquiry in January, but there was nothing more to that. “Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has confirmed interest from Mamelodi Sundowns in midfielder Jayden Adams, but further told SABC Sport there was no formal bid yet from the league champions,” the national broadcaster reported. “The truth is Mamelodi Sundowns made an enquiry in the January window, [and] we informed them he is not available for sale,” Benadie said via SABC Sport. “No further discussions have taken place at all. So yes they are interested in the player. But no offer has been tabled and certainly no deal concluded,” Benadie added.

Barcelona open to offering Vitor Roque to Man United for Mason Greenwood Man United News And Transfer News
Barcelona open to offering Vitor Roque to Man United for Mason Greenwood Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United’s backline has found itself under the spotlight all season, and the 4-0 hammering at the hands of Crystal Palace last weekend further attracted criticism from all corners. However, Man United’s defenders are not the only reason why their goal difference is negative three 35 Premier League games into the season. The Red Devils have been equally underwhelming going forward, managing fewer league goals than West Ham and Brighton and Hove Albion. Signing a new goal-scorer this summer is going to be as crucial as addressing the side’s frustrating defence. In that regard, Barcelona may end up providing United with a great opportunity. Mason Greenwood has enjoyed a prolific loan stint at Getafe. With eight goals and six assists in 29 La Liga appearances, he has been directly involved in more league goals than any United forward this term. According to HITC, he is tied to his parent club until 2026 after they decided to trigger the 12-month extension clause in his contract. However, considering the circumstances that led to his exit, it is highly unlikely Greenwood will be allowed to return to United’s first-team to strengthen their attack. Instead United may get their hands on another goal-scorer – Vitor Roque – because of Greenwood. The outlet goes on to claim that Barcelona are among a number of European giants monitoring the Englishman’s exploits in Spain. The Catalan outfit are very keen on Greenwood and it is claimed they would be willing to offer United players to secure the services of their academy product. One of the players Barca would be open to involving in a swap deal is Roque. The Brazilian striker has struggled to find his feet under Xavi but just 12 months earlier he was considered one of the most exciting South American talents in the market. United could do a lot worse than take a gamble on Roque, who may prove to be an ideal option to challenge Rasmus Højlund for the starting spot in the side’s starting lineup. However, it is added that the Mancunians would prefer a straight sale for Greenwood. Considering he is from their academy, any sale would represent pure profit, handing a huge boost to their concerns regarding financial fair play regulations. Sir Jim Ratcliffe sets June 1 as the deadline for when all Man United employees have to end hybrid working arragement Man United News And Transfer News
1 INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have already made huge changes at the executive level and are looking to do the same for the working culture as well. In their attempt to bring “high-performance” and elite standards back at the club, Sir Jim recently told his staff that no one can work from home anymore. While the effect of such diktats on the team’s performance are debatable, they are nonetheless pressing ahead with it and the marginal gains philosophy. Just a few days after the email detailing the same was announced, a deadline has been set by him for it to happen. The Athletic reports that Sir Jim has ordered every working staff member to complete all contracted hours in-office from June 1 onwards. This is notable because the season ends on May 26 with the FA Cup final clash against Manchester City and the preparation for next season will begin in earnest. United also don’t have enough space to accommodate all their employees working from the office so the sinister theory could also be that this is INEOS’ way of effectively avoiding settlement pay as employees might resign. If so, such measures aren’t likely to be received well by all the staff who are already feeling the effects of cost-cutting and job reduction by the new owners. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co. have been explaining away these measures so far as an effort to realign United’s working culture with elite standards. However, all that will ring hollow if in the summer, the players, architects of low standards at the club, get a second chance despite United being on course for their worst-ever finish in the Premier League era. Till then, the employees lower on the ladder will see another cut to their working profile as part of sweeping changes. Fans would just hope it translates to long-term sustained success on the pitch as the optics of this particular have been sketchy in social circles. Liverpools misfiring forward line shows why summer tweaks is likely aim Liverpool FC
Liverpools misfiring forward line shows why summer tweaks is likely aim Liverpool FC
For all that Darwin Nunez is the sole focus of scrutiny this week, it would be fair to say that Liverpool’s forward line as a whole has the potential to become one of the more interesting stories of their summer. At the start of the campaign, the Reds’ attacking options were considered their biggest strength, but then a late-season spike in wastefulness essentially ended any title hopes. And, though fatigue played an underrated part in those struggles, the questions raised over Jurgen Klopp‘s frontline are not entirely without basis. With 36 games played, Liverpool remain top of the Premier League table for non-penalty xG generated this term (74.2), while Man City come in second (66.9) and Arsenal third (64.1). However, the Reds sit third best for actual goals scored, backing up the surface-level sense of profligacy that is, rather interestingly, also reflected in the deeper underlying numbers.   Lacking lethal weapons Just take the fact that both City (+11.1) and Arsenal (+8.9) are the top two teams in terms of overperforming their non-penalty xG this season, while Liverpool’s underperformance of -4.2 has them ranked 16th in the top-flight. The Gunners have also scored a ludicrous, league-leading (and surely unrepeatable) 16.1 goals more than their post-shot xG suggests, while Pep Guardiola’s men are eighth-best on 3.3. Liverpool, meanwhile, managed to overperform their PSxG by just 0.9, making them the 14th best in the division in that regard. Of course, it is only fair to point out the huge degree of variance generally involved in finishing, but it is noteworthy that the Reds’ numbers match up to the feeling that they haven’t been particularly deadly in front of goal this season. And that is perhaps exactly what should be expected from a forward line that has always given the impression it is comprised of two ‘killers’ in Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota, and then a less-than-ruthless supporting cast in Nunez, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo. Jota is, in fact, the only Liverpool attacker to overperform his non-penalty xG this season (by 4.7 goals), while Diaz (-3.4) and Nunez (-4.4) have been the two worst finishers to feature among the top three clubs’ five most used attackers. By contrast, Arsenal and City have had two and three of their most-used forwards respectively overperform their npxG, while their worst performers, Gabriel Jesus (-2.3) and Julian Alvarez (-2.5), are in much more respectable territory. Admittedly, it is tough to unpick whether this is a consequence of Klopp’s high-volume, occasionally low-quality chance creation machine, and thus if it is a problem Arne Slot will be able to solve. But the obvious alternative is to make tweaks in forward areas, which is understood to be a likely aim for the coming summer.   Where is the priority? In terms of outgoings, it is difficult to see talk of Nunez leaving coming to anything given the likely lack of feasible suitors, and the fact remains that a reversion to even slightly below-average finishing would do remarkable things to his already reasonable goal return. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s current expectation is that Salah will stay put for another year, even if an agreement over a new deal cannot be reached. That arguably leaves Diaz as the most likely departure given his contract situation and well-documented interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, though the Reds won’t be pushing the Colombian out of the door. Still, the obvious priority, if Liverpool are to add in this area, would be a young, flexible forward capable of finishing with some consistency, which brings sense to recent links with PSV’s Johan Bakayoko and Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville. But whether either of those two players are settled on, or it is an as-yet-unknown target who arrives, the club’s recruitment staff surely know they must uncover a Salah, Jota or Sadio Mane this time around, rather than the less-prolific additions of the last two years. Fortunately, it will likely only take one smart signing to tip the balance in favour of goalscorers, ensuring Slot has the right tools to banish the inefficiency that has defined the latter part of this season.

Mosimane can succeed at Chiefs provided
Mosimane can succeed at Chiefs provided
Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns legend Teko Modise strongly believes Pitso Mosimane would be successful at Kaizer Chiefs. Mosimane, who is currently coaching Saudi Arabian side Abha FC, has heavily been linked with the Amakhosi coaching job. However, he previously indicated that at no stage was he and his agent formally approached by Chiefs for the coaching job. A number of names have been thrown around in the media as the season draws to a close but Chiefs have kept their cards close to their chest. However, Modise feels Mosimane, with all his experience, can do wonders if he were to agree to join the Glamour Boys. Modise recalled how Sundowns were struggling prior to Mosimane joining them in 2012 following his sacking from Bafana Bafana. And most importantly, Modise emphasised the importance of player overhaul if Mosimane or any coach is to be hired by Chiefs. ORLANDO PIRATES LEGEND TEKO BACKS PITSO FOR KAIZER CHIEFS JOB “Look, I’ve worked with coach Pitso my entire playing career, maybe most of it. And I know his work ethic and his ideology behind football,” said Modise in this week’s iDiski Times. “Of course, he’s done wonders for every team that he coached, coach Pitso Mosimane, his track record speaks for itself.” “But yet again, when are we going to speak about the players taking responsibility? Because it’s always about coaches getting fired, and coaches getting hired. But the common denominator is always the players who are the ones that are playing,” he continued.  “So, when coach Pitso came to Sundowns, he became successful, and he had an opportunity to be able to change the whole squad. If he goes, if any coach goes to Kaizer Chiefs, if he’s able to do that, then maybe there’s a chance that he might be successful. But with Sundowns, it was unique. Not every team is able to do that.” MODISE HOPES AMAKHOSI BOUNCE BACK SOON Furthermore, Modise hopes Chiefs turn the corner sooner rather later, consoling them by saying every team in the world goes through a rough patch. “I would say because I’ve been in football for such a long time that there’s always a spell, teams do go through the slump,” Teko explained.  “And it’s just unfortunate that when you’re Kaizer Chiefs you’re such a big brand and a big name, so you’re always under scrutiny. And I strongly believe that they’ll be able to bounce back.  “I mean such things have happened also to Sundowns. There was a time at Sundowns when there were fans outside the gate chasing the coach. We were not winning anything, nobody remembers those things.  “Because once you start doing more, we all forget about the bad things that have happened. But I think with what’s happening right now, it can only make them stronger, it can only make them better. And I just hope that we’ll be able to bounce back as soon as possible,” he concluded.

Frank Leboeuf expresses disbelief at massive drop-off in Casemiros form for Man United Man United News And Transfer News
1 In a season full of disappointment from a Manchester United perspective, it is hard to pinpoint exactly one issue which stands out as the worst. An absurd tactical switch to a transition-based team, a porous defence and a crazy injury list that has seen key players like Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw barely feature all season, are all reasonable candidates. However, the massive drop-off in form of Casemiro surely has to be near the top of the pile. The Brazilian was majestic in his debut season, making United much more solid and providing the steel while his midfield partner, Christian Eriksen, provided the silk. The Real Madrid legend also added crucial goals to his game as he scored seven goals, including the opening strike in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United, which the Red Devils would go on to win, ending a six-year trophy drought. However, his second season at Old Trafford has been a nightmare. The 32-year-old’s decline was on full show on Monday night against Crystal Palace in his side’s 0-4 drubbing at Selhurst Park. Casemiro was dribbled past eight times in the match, more than any player in the Premier League this season, as he could not live with Palace’s energetic side. The Brazilian was also caught out of position numerous times and left Jonny Evans to deal with numerous situations by himself. His performances have already been picked apart by the press as Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Redknapp, laid into the player’s role in United’s shambolic defensive performance in a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth last month. Paul Scholes became the latest pundit to tear into the defensive midfielder when he claimed that he probably should not be playing for a team of the calibre of Manchester United anymore. The latest pundit to comment on the shocking decline of the player is former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf. Speaking to ESPN, he stated his confusion at how Casemiro is playing. “We don’t know what’s going on in the dressing room but how come, from Real Madrid, even if you’re not the player you used to be, you can lose almost everything in almost two seasons?” “I don’t get it. I don’t believe (it) because I was such a fan of Casemiro. What I saw yesterday (Monday) is somebody who lost the appetite, lost the feeling and is not the one that I know with all the football knowledge we’ve seen throughout the years he played for Real Madrid and Brazil.” “That’s not understandable for me”. Such has been the decline, that United are looking to get rid of him in the summer, as they plan to sell him for £30 million to Saudi Arabia. However, in all honesty, United fans would be delighted to get anything close to that figure due to the player’s physical decline. In the interest of fairness, Erik ten Hag’s chaotic transition-based style of football does not do the midfielder any favours. Moreover, he has had to play out-of-position as a centre back as of late, with a revolving door of partners due to the obscene amount of injury issues at the club. Nonetheless, he must take responsibility for his own performances and the legendary midfielder’s decline in a United shirt is surely one of the saddest sights of the 2023/2024 season. Liverpool to cut sizeable Thiago wages this summer but fans rue what couldve been Liverpool FC
After four years at the club, Thiago is to move on in the summer at the conclusion of his contract, freeing up wage space but leaving fans dwelling on what could have been. The Spaniard arrived from Bayern Munich to mass excitement, with those at Anfield quick to ponder the possibilities that his quality would inject into Jurgen Klopp‘s squad. We have seen moments from Thiago, who has shown his incredible technical ability and helped the team become more unpredictable, but injury has robbed him of a lasting impact. The 33-year-old is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and will not feature again this season, leaving his only appearance this campaign as the brief cameo off the bench at Arsenal. His contract expires this summer and he is to depart, which will free up to £250,000 from Liverpool’s wage bill in the summer, as per the Athletic. Thiago is one of the high-bracket earners at Anfield and his wages will be reinvested into summer signings, with Liverpool expected to pursue a centre-back and wide player. The No. 6’s departure will be bittersweet, with Thiago a player we all desperately hoped we would see more of – it leaves a lot of what-ifs during a time Liverpool were pushing for silverware. No surprise Thiago is leaving Liverpool. % of possible minutes played by season: 2020/21: 48.9 2021/22: 46.1 2022/23: 41.5 2023/24: 0.2 (!) Total: 37.2 Over £40m in total wages to play about the third of the minutes. Not even his talent is worth that. A real pity. — Andrew Beasley (@BassTunedToRed) May 9, 2024 Still quite sad we never really got to enjoy Thiago for a long period of time ? pic.twitter.com/JtRmU5brZV — Anything Liverpool (@AnythingLFC_) May 9, 2024 I’d argue Thiago was the most technically gifted player I’ve seen at Liverpool over the last 25 years. His body just couldn’t hold up. A huge case of ‘what if’ to be fair. Pity. pic.twitter.com/imtU3rLsr8 — Richie Allen (@Richie_Allen) May 9, 2024 Absolutely gutted about Thiago’s tenure at Liverpool for obvious reasons. Quite noticeably one of the most talented technical players Liverpool’s ever had & was met with injury after injury until we all just couldn’t stomach it anymore & gave up on seeing him in lineups. https://t.co/YEg5wYku20 — The Beautiful Game (@BeautifulGameJS) May 9, 2024 It is a real shame that we did not get to enjoy Thiago for long stretches over the last four years, a luxury player who has had some very unlucky injuries and will conclude his Reds career with 98 games. It has been claimed that Thiago is expecting offers this summer from the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia and Qatar speculated as possible destinations. He was recently spotted at Anfield attending the win over Tottenham and will be present for his farewell on the final day against Wolves, although his departure may be eclipsed by Jurgen Klopp.

Sundowns open talks with midfield star amid huge interest
Mamelodi Sundowns have opened contractual talks with star midfielder Teboho Mokoena amid huge interest from abroad. Mokoena is heavily linked with clubs from Europe, North Africa and the Gulf States, according to local reports in the media. According to SABC Sport, Sundowns are attempting to fend off interest from clubs that are keeping tabs on Mokoena. However, the two parties have reportedly reached a deadlock over the proposed new deal. Mokoena’s current deal expires in June 2026. It is unclear, at this stage, what the stand off between Sundowns and Mokoena is but it could do with buy-out clauses and salary. According to sources known to the publication, the said talks between Sundowns and Mokoena commenced prior to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. SUNDOWNS ATTEMPTING TO TIE DOWN MOKOENA BUT… “SABC Sport understands that sporting director Flemming Berg has been given the mandate to ensure Downs do not lose their key players, hence the decision to open talks to extend Mokoena’s current terms,” reads part of the report. “According to impeccable sources at Chloorkop, the public broadcaster has established that these discussions have reached a deadlock and nothing has been finalised yet despite such discussions having commenced prior to the AFCON.” WHAT ARE THE TWO PARTIES SAYING? Meanwhile, the public broadcaster did reach out to both Sundowns and Mokoena’s agent Glynn Binkin to seek clarity but none was willing to lift lid on the ongoing talks. Sundowns didn’t want to entertain the issue, only opting to say player contractual negotiations are strictly confidential and cannot be shared. “As a principle, MSFC never comments on player’s contractual negotiations and consider it an internal matter. MSFC has, however, clarified that Teboho Mokoena currently has two more seasons [with the club] after this current season,” Downs responded. Mokoena’s agent Binkin said negotiations were at a delicate stage, and didn’t want to prejudice them by commenting in the media. “Negotiations were at a very delicate stage currently and I would not want to prejudice such discussions at this moment,” said Binkin to the same publication.

Manchester United players feel they will not win a single remaining game this season Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United lost their 13th game of the Premier League season, a record since the competition’s inception, a 0-4 annihilation at the hands of Crystal Palace. Not even the most ardent fan would have expected too much but still the manner of the capitulation was another stark reminder of Erik ten Hag’s loosening grip on the squad. Five-time Champions League winner Casemiro had the worst night of his United career and it seemed he had almost given up, like so many of his teammates in recent weeks. When the chance to secure a Champions League spot was lost, there were fears that motivation levels would drop and that is exactly what has transpired with The Daily Star claiming United’s beleaguered stars feel the remaining campaign could turn out to be humiliating. EtH & players both to blame Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, player power has run rampant and many-a-times, big-name stars have downed tools to ensure the manager gets sacked. The Dutchman is also to blame for this mess with the former Ajax coach refusing to compromise on his flawed style despite a mounting injury crisis, which in turn, is leading to bigger and bigger losses. United have conceded three or more goals 15 times this season, while Monday’s result was the fourth time they have conceded four times in a game this season. INEOS’ refusal to address the managerial situation with any real conviction is not helping with players feeling Ten Hag is a goner and that has led to players not putting in the hard yards for him any longer. United are still to play Arsenal, Newcastle United and Brighton before their all-important FA Cup final and still have the chance to secure European football for next season. Players giving up But players do not envisage a single win and that surely is concerning for INEOS and could lead to their lowest-ever league finish and the team will have no European football next season which will certainly impact their finances and their ability to recruit top stars in the summer. “Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United flops fear they will not win another game this season. “The news is a huge blow to Ten Hag as he battles to save himself from the sack. Morale and confidence is so low among the United squad that there is a feeling among many of the players that their season could be all but over. “United’s confidence is said to be shot to pieces, with the players starting to think there is nothing they can do to spare Ten Hag from the sack. “A club insider described the mood among United’s squad as ‘miserable’, with many of the players convinced Ten Hag will be on his way this summer after such a dismal season.” INEOS’ big call Ten Hag sounds deluded during post-match interactions which is adding further fuel to the fire with critics vociferous in their appeals to sack the Dutchman. Ten Hag’s refusal to back away from playing this flawed style despite so many injuries will ultimately let him down while the players he has signed have mostly been huge disappointments. Fans are already worried about what the scoreline will be against the Gunners and are fearing a rout at Wembley. Should INEOS pull the plug now and bring in an interim coach? Currently, the management have no such plans and they want Ten Hag to lead the team out for the Cup final. With Thomas Tuchel making a strong case for his appointment, INEOS have a huge call to make regarding the managerial situation. But players believing no turnaround if possible is concerning. A difficult end to a dismal campaign awaits. Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Kaizer Chiefs legendary keeper names shock Khunes replacement
Kaizer Chiefs legendary keeper names shock Khunes replacement
Kaizer Chiefs legendary goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has named a shock Itumeleng Khune’s replacement from Mamelodi Sundowns. Speaking to FarPost, Baloyi feels Chiefs should consider signing Denis Onyango despite him being being older than Khune. Baloyi is banking on Onyango’s experience more than anything, and he believes the Ugandan goalkeeper still has two to three seasons left in him. Furthermore, the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper gave a practical example, recalling how the late Arthur Baartman pushed Khune despite being in the twilight of his career. At the time, Khune was injured and later had to prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup with Bafana Bafana, and Baartman ended being Chiefs’ No.1. And Baloyi feels Onyango can play a similar role to that of Baartman by pushing the younger Amakhosi goalkeepers to their limits if Khune is leave. KAIZER CHIEFS ADVISED TO SIGN ONYANGO FROM SUNDOWNS “We have Itumeleng Khune, but we don’t know what’s going to happen with him. So, you need an Onyango with vast experience, and he can give you two or three seasons,” said Baloyi. “Same way that Arthur Baartman did; may his soul rest in peace. He came in and started pushing Khune to a point where he started playing regularly.” “You need someone like that, someone who will come in and push these young players so that they lift up their game. If Kaizer Chiefs were to want to sign a goalkeeper now, I will say sign Onyango,” added Baloyi. KHUNE IS IN HIS FINAL SEASON WITH AMAKHOSI… Baloyi’s comments stem from the fact that Chiefs announced in 2023 that this would be Khune’s final season with them as a player. But it is still unclear whether Khune is ready to retire, especially at this time when Chiefs are still not doing well on the pitch. Khune is in his 20th year with the Chiefs senior having first being promoted as a very young boy in 2004. However, the now 36-year-old made his debut for the Glamour Boys in August 2007 against Jomo Cosmos as a 20-year-old. Meanwhile, Khune could make his first return to the Amakhosi match day squad since December 2023 on Sunday when they visit AmaZulu as reported by The South African. And that’s because Brandon Petersen is suspended following his red card from the bench in midweek against TS Galaxy. It will be interesting to see if Cavin Johnson brings him back in order to bring about experience on his team’s bench in case anything happens to Bruce Bvuma.

Mokwena takes a jab at Komphela for failing to win against 10-man
Mokwena takes a jab at Komphela for failing to win against 10-man
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena took a slight jab at Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela for failing to win against 10-man Downs on Wednesday evening. Mosa Lebusa’s red card in the 46th minute saw Bafana Ba Style play the rest of the second half with 10-man. Abafana Bes’thende failed to create clear-cut chances despite having an extra player on the field. Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena took a slight jab at his ex-colleague Steve Komphela after the match. Well, I think maybe his motivation to beat us should have been higher especially when there is a numerical advantage, but I can’t speak for Steve,” he said. “We tried to win the game, we did everything we could to win the game. I am very proud of the players for their effort.” Rulani Mokwena says Komphela’s motivation should be higher Mokwena claimed his side should have scored five goals in the first half alone. He also suggested that Arrows approached the match with a defensive mindset and didn’t bother attacking despite the numerical advantage. “I don’t understand how we got into halftime 0-0 [because we had] so many chances; I was counting at one point and I stopped. I think it should have been 5-0,” Mokwena told the media. “Then it is 10 vs 11, but there is still one team on the pitch and that is why [Ismail Watenga was the Man of the Match. It was one of those games where the ball didn’t go into the back of the net.” It seems there is no love lost between Mokwena and Komphela. The two worked together as co-coaches at Downs for two years before Steve was demoted together with Manqoba Mngqithi. The 56-year-old coach left Masandawana for Moroka Swallows last year but only lasted six months before leaving the Soweto Giants. In March, the Arrows coach stated that some coaches he worked with didn’t share information. He further stated that the coaches’ laptops had four passwords and he wasn’t allowed near them. Komphela’s statement was seen as a jab at Mokwena and the Sundowns coach hit back a few days later.

Manchester United confirm Lisandro Martinez and Marcus Rashford have returned to first team training Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United’s disappointing campaign is just three league games from completion but with an FA Cup final booked in at the end of the month, there is still a chance of it ending on a high. Erik ten Hag’s squad is ravaged by injuries and has been throughout the campaign, plaguing the Dutchman’s second season in charge at Old Trafford. United were without a raft of first-team stars in the woeful defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday night, with the team hitting a new low, losing 4-0 in the capital. However, the club have finally confirmed some good news on the injury front with two key players back in training. Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez were both pictured in today’s session and could well be in line for some minutes at the weekend. Welcome back, lads @LisandrMartinez and @MarcusRashford have returned to training #MUFC || #PL — Manchester United (@ManUtd) May 9, 2024 Arsenal visit Old Trafford on Sunday in a huge game for Mikel Arteta’s side who are going punch-for-punch with Manchester City for this year’s title. It’s also a big game for Ten Hag whose position at the club has come under huge pressure in recent months. A win against Arteta’s in-form side would be a huge boost for Ten Hag who will know the importance of his players heading into the final with confidence. Martinez has been a monumental miss for the team this season with the Argentine a key figure both on the pitch and in the dressing room. The World Cup winner’s ability to play out from the back and start attacks has been sorely missed and getting him up to speed for the showpiece occasion would transform United’s chances on the day. As for Rashford, his form has been atrocious all season, but he does possess the quality to cause any defence problems, as he showed on multiple occasions last year. If Rashford can find a burst of quality for the remaining games, he probably does still represent United’s best chance of causing City problems, something he has a good record of doing. The news of the pair’s return will provide an obvious boost to the squad who will be desperate to salvage something from what has been a wretched season to date. Furthermore, the final looks like Ten Hag’s only chance to save his job in Manchester and he will be doing all he can to upset the odds at Wembley and regain some faith that has been lost this year. Harry Kewell leads club to AFC Champions League final creates Istanbul rematch Liverpool FC
Harry Kewell leads club to AFC Champions League final creates Istanbul rematch Liverpool FC
Harry Kewell is currently a manager in Japan, and on Saturday he will lead his in the AFC Champions League final, in a matchup that has ties to its 2005 European counterpart. The former Liverpool man has been in management since 2015, starting at Watford‘s academy before taking on roles throughout the Football League up until 2023. In December, he was announced as the head coach of Yokohama Marinos in Japan, and he has since led his side to the final of the most prestigious club competition in Asian football. The AFC Champions League operates much like UEFA’s competition, and the winner will qualify 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, taking place in the United States next summer. Kewell guided his side safely through the knockout stages – which included a semi-final penalty shootout – and will meet Abu Dhabi’s Al Ain in the final, who are managed by Hernan Crespo. It is a name Liverpool fans will know all too well, as he scored a double for AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final before the Reds mounted their incredible comeback. Kewell was named in Rafa Benitez’s starting lineup in Istanbul but was withdrawn before Crespo got his name on the scoresheet after a groin injury in the 23rd minute. Fast-forward nearly 20 years and Kewell and Crespo will again be in opposite dugouts as they seek to lift the trophy with a winning scoreline over two legs. Unlike the European Champions League final, its Asian counterpart sees the final take place over two legs, with both clubs having the opportunity to play at home. Kewell’s side will host the first leg on May 11 before a trip to Abu Dhabi follows on May 25. While the Australian has succeeded in knockout competitions, Yokohama Marinos have only won four of their 11 league games to date to sit in 11th position, nine points off the leaders. The now 45-year-old played 139 times for the Reds between 2003 and 2008, scoring 16 goals and lifting two trophies.

Al Nassr preparing 40 million summer bid for Manchester United midfielder Casemiro Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United were completely outclassed by Crystal Palace 0-4 in their Premier League game at Selhurst Park on Monday. Injuries to Harry Maguire and skipper Bruno Fernandes meant manager Erik ten Hag was forced to play Casemiro alongside Jonny Evans, the 14th different centre-back partnership this season. And the experienced Brazilian let the team down big time, getting dribbled past eight times as he constantly tried to slide into challenges while abandoning his post. While he is not a natural centre-back, the 32-year-old was certainly expected to use his years of knowledge to try and hold the fort but instead turned out to be the biggest villain on the night. Casemiro’s downfall This season has been a clear reminder that the former Real Madrid superstar is well past his peak with injuries starting to catch up with the midfield enforcer. Ten Hag’s flawed tactics have also played a role in the sharp decline with the midfielder simply having too much to do in this new high-transition system with the opposition players overwhelming him at times. INEOS were disappointed that the club agreed such a short-term fix while spending such an exorbitant amount and are open to moving Casemiro on in the summer. The former Sao Paulo star is attracting interest from Turkey and Italy but a move to Saudi Arabia seems the most likely with The Peoples Person relaying that three clubs are in the fray. CaughtOffside have claimed Al Nassr, who had been offered Casemiro in January, are preparing a summer bid worth €40 million with Cristiano Ronaldo’s side ready to offer a three-year contract to the Brazil star. “Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Al Nassr have already held talks with the representatives of Casemiro, who is open to leaving Man Utd for the right offer. Al Nassr readying bid “It’s also expected that Al Nassr are ready to try a bid of around €40m to the Red Devils for Casemiro, while they’d be prepared to offer the player a three-year contract.” Ronaldo, since joining the Saudi team, has been trying to acquire both Casemiro and Raphael Varane and INEOS would do well to agree to a deal so as to begin preparations for a major team-building exercise in the summer. If a sale is agreed, it would represent a €30 million loss on what the club initially agreed to pay the La Liga giants. Interestingly, the sale would be the biggest in terms of a transfer fee received by the Reds for a midfielder. Joao Neves‘ name has been doing the rounds as a potential replacement but a lot will depend on the final budget. The club currently cannot afford to splurge big on one single position. With funds tight, player sales are needed before they can focus on reinforcements with the current team badly in need of additions all over the park. Mbappe gets ready to say goodbye as PSG digest Champions League exit
Mbappe will not get the send-off he had hoped for in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1. Kylian Mbappe is set to play his last game for Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes when they host Toulouse on Sunday, in their first outing since being eliminated from the Champions League. ALSO READ: PSG coach Luis Enrique proud despite ‘unfair’ Champions League exit PSG’s hunt for elusive European glory will go on into another year after they went out in the semi-finals to Borussia Dortmund, a 1-0 loss in Tuesday’s second leg at home sealing a surprise 2-0 aggregate defeat. It means Mbappe will not get the send-off he had hoped for in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1 and will end his seven-year spell at PSG without ever having won Europe’s elite club competition. Mbappe informed PSG privately in February of his intention to depart when his contract expires at the end of the current campaign. The 25-year-old has never said as much publicly though, far less confirmed where he will be going next, but it appears certain that he is bound for Real Madrid. In the meantime, Mbappe and his current club will hope to finish the season on a high, with PSG still able to complete a clean sweep of domestic honours. They have already secured the Ligue 1 title, their 10th in the last 12 seasons, and will pick up the trophy after Sunday’s game against mid-table Toulouse, which will be their last of the campaign on home turf. PSG, who have also won the Champions Trophy, France’s equivalent of a Super Cup, will then meet Lyon in the French Cup final in Lille on May 25. “Not everything is to be chucked in the bin. We still have objectives and a French Cup final to come,” Mbappe told reporters after the Dortmund defeat. “We are going to keep working. We will try to win that final and then we will assess how the season went, what was good and what was not so good.” Mbappe did not find the net in either leg of the Dortmund tie but has scored 43 goals in all competitions this season, with 26 of those coming in Ligue 1. He will still hope to add to his club-record tally of 255 goals for PSG and win another medal in that Cup final — Mbappe has so far won six Ligue 1 titles, three French Cups and the now defunct League Cup twice in his seven years at his hometown team. After Sunday’s game, PSG will complete their league campaign with away matches at Nice and at relegation-threatened Metz, before Mbappe wraps up his career at the club in that Cup final. Kaizer Chiefs trio SUSPENDED for crucial league match
Cavin Johnson will be without three key Kaizer Chiefs players for this weekend’s crucial DStv Premiership clash against AmaZulu. In terms of the race for top eight spots, Sunday’s clash at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is indeed a six pointer. A victory for Usuthu will see them climb above Kaizer Chiefs who currently sit in eighth position on the table. Johnson will be without the services of Brandon Petersen, Given Msimango and Edmilson Dove who all miss out through suspension! Kaizer Chiefs trio to miss AmaZulu clash Edmilson Dove’s red card against TS Galaxy means he misses out on Sunday. Furthermore, Brandon Petersen was also giving his marching orders on the bench, and will subsequently miss out as well. Given Msimango remains suspended after picking up a red card against Mamelodi Sundowns last week. In other news, former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ntokozo Sikhakhane has urged the club to release one of their struggling midfielders. Sikhakhane, a midfielder who wore the Amakhosi jersey between 2005 and 2007, believes Siyethemba Sithebe should return to his former club, AmaZulu. Sithebe joined the Glamour Boys at the beginning of last season; however, he’s struggled to get going at the mighty Amakhosi. With a cloud of uncertainty hovering over his Kaizer Chiefs career, Sikhakhane believes Sithebe simply isn’t good enough for the Glamour Boys. Chiefs urged to release Sithebe “They can release him. In games that he has played for Kaizer Chiefs, there’s nothing special he has done,” Sikhakhane told FARPost. “And I still believe that he’s not the top midfielder; he’s just a player. But because Chiefs, they just sign any player. Once you shine at Santos, they bring you in; once you shine at AmaZulu, they bring you. “They don’t look at whether you’re going to fit in their style or in their structure. So, for Sithebe, he hasn’t been playing for two years, and he can’t prove himself in the last ten games. What was he doing all along? I think he’d do well at AmaZulu. I’d advise him to go back.” Final three Kaizer Chiefs fixtures revealed The Glamour Boys are next in action on 12 May when they face AmaZulu FC away from home. A week later, Chiefs host Polokwane City before travelling to the Mother City to face Cape Town Spurs on 25 May.

Bradley Grobler has become the first player to score 10 goals or more in a PSL season on five occasions. Grobler, now 36, reached double figures this season when he found the back of the net for SuperSport United against Sekhukhune United earlier in the week. Grobler’s five seasons of scoring 10 goals or more have been 2010/2011 (for Platinum Stars) and 2019/2020, 2020/2021, 2022/23 and now 2023/24 (all for SuperSport United). He also won the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award and the league’s top scorer in the 2020/2021 season. Two matches for Bafana Bafana Grobler was born on 25 January 1988. He is the son of former Moroka Swallows player Les Grobler. He attended Benoni High School and plied his trade as a junior at both Boksburg FC and BK Callies just outside Johannesburg. Grobler started his professional football career at Platinum Stars in 2007. After a four-year stint at the club, he moved to Turkish second division side Göztepe A.Ş. on 26 August 2011. He was then Göztepe’s most expensive signing ever. On 26 June 2012, Grobler joined PSL side Ajax Cape Town on a four-year deal. However, after just 12 appearances for the Cape Town side, he left to join Matsatsantsa in 2013 and has gone on to play over 300 matches for the club. Grobler has also represented Bafana Bafana on 12 occasions and scored one of his two goals for South Africa on his international debut against Zimbabwe on 15 November 2011. Kaizer Chiefs approach surprise former PSL coach
Kaizer Chiefs are working hard in their quest to land a top quality new head coach. Cavin Johnson is set to be relieved of his duties as Amakhosi head coach at the end of the season. This comes after a disappointing 2023/24 campaign. Kaizer Chiefs failed to win any silverware, extending their trophy drought towards the decade mark. According to the latest reports, the club have enquired about the availability of a rather surprise new candidate! Take a look at the details below. Kaizer Chiefs make approach for former Leopards coach Experienced Belgian mentor Patrick Aussems is a new name on the ‘Amakhosi head coach‘ candidates list! Aussems, who enjoyed a short stint at Black Leopards FC in 2020, has reportedly been approached by Kaizer Chiefs for their head coaching position. According to Soccer Laduma, The club’s management are ‘in touch with him’. It remains to be seen whether the 59 year old’s talks with the club will materialise into something concrete. Aussems has previously coach African giants Simba SC and Al Hilal Omdurman. He was most recently the head coach of Kenyan giants AFC Leopards before leaving the club last year. In other news, former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Ntokozo Sikhakhane has urged the club to release one of their struggling midfielders. Kaizer Chiefs to bring back Itumeleng Khune against AmaZulu?
Kaizer Chiefs are facing a goalkeeping and defensive crisis ahead of their Sunday’s league match away to AmaZulu. And that’s because three of their players are suspended after being shown red cards in the last two competitive matches. Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was slapped with a red card while on the bench in Amakhosi’s 2-2 draw with TS Galaxy in midweek so was Edmilson Dove. Given Msimango was red-carded in that 5-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, meaning Chiefs have to again make changes at the back. COULD KAIZER CHIEFS BRING KHUNE BACK? Now, with Petersen out for the next two games through suspension, Chiefs have Bruce Bvuma, Itumeleng Khune and Bontle Molefe available. Molefe is yet to make his professional debut while Khune hasn’t been in the team since December 2023 despite his return from a three-month suspension. With Chiefs desperate to finish in the top-eight, Cavin Johnson could be forced to bring Khune back for the next two games to ensure there’s enough experience and depth on the bench. Of course, Khune is unlikely to start ahead of Bvuma given his lack of match fitness but the latter has conceded seven goals in two goals which is alarming. But his presence on the bench could mean a lot to the dejected squad and those who have been calling for his return to the Chiefs team. Khune’s last competitive match was in January 2024 when featured for the Carling All Stars against Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Cup. And he did brilliantly well for a goalkeeper who had not been training with his Chiefs teammates due to that suspension. PETERSEN’S RED CARD A BLESSING IN DISGUISE? Khune’s fans would see Petersen’s red card as a blessing in disguise as their favourite goalkeeper may get to at least play one more game before saying goodbye. It is public knowledge that Khune is in his final season with Chiefs as per their statement released when he was offered an extension. And if Johnson doesn’t bring him back, Khune may bow out without even saying goodbye to his followers and entire Chiefs fan-base. He served the Glamour Boys with distinction since making his debut in August 2007, and perhaps he deserves one more game to bow out in style. It is unclear whether there are talks behind the scenes or not regarding Khune’s possible stay as a player but he has been offered to stay in a non-playing capacity. However, whether or not Khune is ready to retire remains to be seen given his public comments in the past. Nonetheless, Khune has already started preparing for life without football as he recently acquired a certificate in goalkeeper coaching.

Manchester United midfeilder Kobbie Mainoo nominated for the Premier Leagues Young Player of the Season award Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United have suffered a wretched season with Erik ten Hag’s men looking likely to miss out on qualification for European competitions altogether next season. The majority of Ten Hag’s squad have underperformed badly throughout the campaign, leading to a record 13 losses in the league and an embarrassing early exit from the Champions League. However, one plus point from the season has been the emergence of young midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo has been a mainstay in the starting XI since his first game of the season at Goodison Park in November, excelling in the middle of the park despite the team’s poor form all around him. His wonderful breakthrough campaign has not gone unnoticed, with United’s No 37 getting nominated for the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season award. Proud Kobbie Mainoo is among the nominees for the @PremierLeague‘s Young Player of the Season award #MUFC || #PL — Manchester United (@ManUtd) May 9, 2024 The Englishman grabbed his first goal for his boyhood club in the third round of the FA Cup against Newport, following it up with a couple of stunning strikes in the Premier League. His ridiculous stoppage-time winner in the pulsating 4-3 win against Wolves won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for February, showcasing all of his attributes with a stunning run and finish. Mainoo then put United ahead in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Old Trafford, his outstanding curling effort ensured a point and helped put an end to the old enemy’s title hopes in the process. The academy product also made his bow for England in a friendly against Brazil at Wembley, impressing on the big stage and now looking a certainty for the Three Lions squad for the Euros in the summer. Alongside his incredible talent with the ball, Mainoo’s temperament is perhaps the most impressive thing about the young man. At just 19, Mainoo’s composure in possession and unflappable nature under pressure will be key to him starring for United for many years to come. It’s imperative United now build their midfield around the new star and with a summer of changes expected at the club, tying Mainoo down to a long term contract should be high on the INEOS to-do-list. Winning the prestigious award would be the icing on the cake after a wonderful breakthrough campaign but the United man does face stiff competition for the gong. Manchester City pair, Phil Foden and Erling Haaland will be among the favourites with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer also in the running. Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, Tottenham Hotspur’s Destiny Udogie and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and William Saliba make up the remaining nominees. Whatever the outcome, Mainoo has every reason to be delighted with his work this season and will hope to finish it off by lifting the FA Cup at the end of the month. Jurgen Klopp doubles down on why Liverpool trophies mean more Liverpool FC
Jurgen Klopp doubles down on why Liverpool trophies mean more Liverpool FC
Trent Alexander-Arnold caused quite the reaction when explaining why Liverpool trophies mean more, and Jurgen Klopp has added his two cents brilliantly. In March, Alexander-Arnold caused quite the storm when he said “our trophies will mean more to us,” despite having won fewer than Man City in the current era. City supporters and players quickly piled on in their attempts to dispute the claim, and we have already seen similar unfold after Klopp echoed the words of his right-back. “I really think there’s a Liverpool way. When you win one time with Liverpool, it is worth as much as five with another club,” he said in a recent LFC video. ?? pic.twitter.com/6zaLsowUbe — This Is Anfield (@thisisanfield) May 8, 2024 This Is Anfield‘s post of the quote on X alone has already triggered quite a reaction from those of a City persuasion, which says everything. Klopp continued: “To experience a good moment is really good. To experience a good moment with a lot of people together is a completely different level, and the same is with the bad moments. “So that is really special. “If you played a minute for this club, people all over the world will never forget you. “And you will find them 7,000 miles away. Really, the club is so big and you only realise it when you go in different countries and continents.” Whether others like to believe it or not, Liverpool have shown time and time again why winning ‘means more’ to us, especially when you consider the 115 financial breaches stacked against them by a domestic rival. No other club has hundreds of thousands of fans lining the street after they lose a Champions League final the night before to celebrate a domestic cup double, it just doesn’t happen elsewhere. You may need to get your popcorn out over the next few days to see how Klopp’s words resonate with one particular club and its players and manager, we could be in for a treat!

Mokwena gives positive injury update on Bafana star Mokoena
Mokwena gives positive injury update on Bafana star Mokoena
“If an assistant referee gets injured because of the volume of games, what about the players?” says Mokwena. Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has allayed fears over the injury to Lucas Ribeiro while also giving a positive update on Teboho Mokoena who has missed the last seven games with a hamstring injury. ALSO READ: The race for the Top 8 – Kaizer Chiefs are clinging on but will they stay there? The Brazilians will be hoping both players recover in time for next month’s all-important Nedbank Cup final against old rivals Orlando Pirates at the Mbombela Stadium. Mokwena will need all the firepower in his arsenal against the Buccaneers who got the better of them in the MTN8 Cup final earlier this season. Ribeiro pulled what looked like a hamstring injury in a DStv Premiership encounter against Golden Arrows on Wednesday and left the field in tears. “I’m not sure, but let me put this into context a little bit because people ask me about the volume of games. Do you know who pulled a hamstring in the last game? It was Zakhele Siwela (PSL assistant referee). Count how many games Zakhele has actually done domestically and internationally,” Mokwena said before giving an update on two of his star players,” said Mokwena. “If an assistant referee gets injured because of the volume of games, what about the players? Lucas Ribeiro’s injury is just a consequence of the number of games we have to play but I don’t think it’s that serious though. “Tebza (Teboho Mokwena) is coming on very nicely and it’s just a matter of risking. Maybe had we not qualified for the final (Nedbank Cup), he would have probably played some of the games now but we have to weigh things up but he’s coming on nicely.” Having already captured the league title, the challenge is for Masandawana to keep their unbeaten run intact in the remaining five games. Their next game is a home tie against Royal AM at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. “I want to see a team that I’ve seen the whole season and a team that is playing well and respects the game by trying its best to win football matches. ALSO READ: Mabasa insists Golden Boot award not on his mind “We have to take it game by game and do our best to win. We have the next one in a few days so we need to recover and do video analysis,” Mokwena concluded.

Manchester United eyeing Benfica wonderkid Joao Neves as Casemiros replacement Man United News And Transfer News
Manchester United eyeing Benfica wonderkid Joao Neves as Casemiros replacement Man United News And Transfer News
1 An injury-ravaged Manchester United suffered a humiliating 0-4 loss at the hands of Crystal Palace in their Premier League game at Selhurst Park on Monday. With skipper Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire joining the ever-expanding injury list in the build-up to the game, manager Erik ten Hag was forced to pair Casemiro with Jonny Evans at the back. This was the 14th different centre-back partnership this season and it is fair to say that the move did not work with the Brazilian, in particular, disappointing big time. The former Real Madrid superstar was constantly out of position as he kept going to ground in a bid to win the ball back, forgetting that he was a centre-back and needed to support the recently-fit again Evans. Casemiro out Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze had a field day against the Brazil international and the display was another reminder to INEOS that they need to move the 32-year-old on in the summer. Sir Jim Ratcliffe was far from impressed with the club’s decision to throw so much money at Casemiro and offer him a long-term deal considering his advancing years. There is interest from Saudi Arabia, Turkey as well as from Italy and if the club can recoup half of what they paid for the defensive midfielder’s services, it would be seen as a good deal. Portuguese daily Record have claimed that the 20-time English league champions have zeroed in on the perfect replacement should the Brazilian depart – Joao Neves of Benfica. He is expected to cost around €100 million and is one of the most sought-after young midfielders in world football. The youngster could form a lethal long-term partnership with Kobbie Mainoo at the centre of the pitch. It is well-known at this point that the Red Devils have been monitoring the Portuguese international for quite some time now and the outlet (via Sport Witness) claimed that the 19-year-old is the “priority to rejuvenate” the midfield. The report mentions that while no official bid has been submitted, “this will be a reality in the short term”, indicating an offer will be tabled soon. Joao Neves in as replacement Benfica want to keep Neves for one more season and are much more open to the sale of central defender Antonio Silva, who is also a United target. With Alvaro Fernandez expected to sign for the Portuguese giants in the summer, United could use that as a means to further their talks for the defensive midfield maestro. Benfica had made it clear in January that they had not agreed any pre-agreement deal with United and it will be interesting to see whether the Old Trafford side actually go after both or choose one for now among the aforementioned duo. A lot will depend on the eventual budget and INEOS will need to be smart with their recruitment as the club is in need of multiple players all across the park and they cannot afford to utilise the majority of their funds on one player alone. Rulani Mokwena did the right thing by rejecting Al Ahly offer!
Rulani Mokwena did the right thing by rejecting Al Ahly offer!
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena is in the news after it emerged that he made a last-minute U-turn on leaving with Pitso Mosimane to Al Ahly in 2020. At the time, Mokwena had just returned to the club following stints with Orlando Pirates and Chippa United. In October 2020, Mosimane received a bumper offer to join Al Ahly, and Mosimane wanted him to join him at the Egyptian giants, according to Sunday World. Had Mokwena not change his mind, he would be in Saudi Arabia with Mosimane who’s coaching relegation-hreatened Abha FC. But did Mokwena make the right decision? RULANI MOKWENA REAPING THE REWARDS OF REJECTING AL AHLY The answer to the above question is simple: Mokwena made the right decision by rejecting the offer to join Mosimane and stay at Sundowns. And he’s definitely reaping the rewards of his decision as success continues to follow him at Sundowns. He has delivered two league titles as co-coach with Manqoba Mngqithi and stand-alone coach since the departure of Mosimane. Furthermore, Mokwena delivered the African Football League and stands a good chance of winning a treble this season as Sundowns will play in the Nedbank Cup final. He’s also unbeaten in the league since taking over the coaching role at Sundowns, meaning he could make history in PSL football if he doesn’t lose the remaining league matches. All that and more prove just how successful Mokwena has been – the success he wouldn’t claim as his had he followed Mosimane to Al Ahly. As per KickOff, Mosimane said Mokwena would be a better coach than him, and the little steps he has taken so far, suggest the Kagiso-born mentor could be right. Mokwena is passionate about coaching and success, and this has always been his dream hence he’s started coaching at a very young age. And at 37, he still has a long way to go and it’s rest assured that more big clubs are coming after his services given his success at Sundowns. Even the same Al Ahly that he nearly joined as an assistant coach could come for him in the next few years, this time to head the technical team. MOKWENA’S RECORD AS SUNDOWNS HEAD COACH No PSL coach has been able to defeat Mokwena in the league since his appointment in October 2022. He has coached in 49 league games since then, winning 37 and recorded just 12 draws at Sundowns. Overall, Mokwena has managed 86 games across all competitions, winning 57, drawing 22 and losing just seven, according to Transfermarkt.

Orlando Pirates will have to reshuffle their midfield for the weekend clash against Richards Bay after one of their players got himself in the referee’s notebook. Mbatha is out for Richards Bay clash Thalente Mbatha will play no part against Richards Bay on Saturday 11 May after picking up a fourth booking of the campaign, against Chippa. Pirates were comfortable 2-0 winners against the Chilli Boys, thanks to a brace from ted-hot striker Tshegofatso Mabasa. Mbatha has been a key figure since arriving from SuperSport on loan. The consensus is that Pirates will exercise their option to sign him permanently. A clash against relegation strugglers Richards Bay isn’t the worst match for him to miss, although the visitors are fighting for their lives in the top flight. Mbatha and Makhuala anchored the midfield against Chippa, so Miguel Timm should come in for Mbatha. Riveiro is spoiled for choice at Orlando Pirates Timm isn’t exactly a shabby replacement in midfield. Pirates introduced him, Katlego Otladisa, Evidence Makgopa, Lesedi Kapinga and Olisa Ndah off the bench. That’s some serious star quality. We could see rotation on Saturday against Richards Bay with any of these five players pushing for starts. Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro at the Orlando Stadium. Image: @orlandopirates/X. Is Mofokeng moving to Europe? Relebohile Mofokeng has been a revelation for Pirates this season, excelling off the left-hand side of an attacking midfield trio behind Tshegofatso Mabasa. Originally a number 10, he’s shown his technical level and ability to adapt in spades. This form has alerted some big European suitors. “Reports from Scouts in Attendance claim Rangers are one of several European teams interested in Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng,” Rangers Review reported. “They report that the Ibrox club are keeping tabs on the emerging talent, aged 19.
