Kaizer Chiefs to lose Itumeleng Khune and potential replacement?
Kaizer Chiefs to lose Itumeleng Khune and potential replacement?
Kaizer Chiefs maybe about to lose both Itumeleng Khune and his touted replacement Takalani Mazhamba. Khune had has been vocal about prolonging his playing career, which is unlikely to be at Chiefs. Over the years, Khune has been a stalwart for Chiefs, being their number-one goalkeeper for well over a decade. In recent years, however, the 36-year-old has been plagued by injuries and lack of form, which have seen him dropped. With the club failing to find a regular goalkeeper to take over, they have often called on him repeatedly.  Khune set to leave Chiefs He then returned with a man of the match performance for the Carling All Stars XI. The country got to see yet another glimpse of what he is still capable of in front of the sticks. With Chiefs making a statement that Khune will retire, he came out to say he isn’t ready to do so. Therefore, he might have to find another club next season as there seems to be no talks of a renewal as yet. Furthermore, even after his return from suspension, he seems to be out of favour and third choice.  While Khune could be coming to the end of his stint at Chiefs, Mazhamba was thought to be the future. The 16-year-old is thought to be very highly-rated within the junior and senior structures of the club. The belief in his abilities at the club has been evident through him being invited to train with the first team on occasion. He has also fought his way into the DDC structures.  Mazhamba to follow? While Mazhamba is thought to be happy with his progress at Chiefs, he is thought to be seeking first team opportunities. That, even if they come away from the club according to Soccer-Laduma. “Takalani Mazhamba is a very good young goalkeeper whose future in the football is bright. There are clubs that are interested in him, and Sundowns is one of them. The boy is happy at Chiefs and is appreciative of everything that the club has done for him, but he would be open to opportunities for first team football elsewhere if it doesn’t happen at the club. The next few weeks will be crucial for him to decide his future,” said the source to the publication.  While Chiefs could be ready to move on from Khune, losing a potential replacement like Mazhamba could be tough.

Kaizer Chiefs fixtures Amakhosi have four matches left of the DStv Premiership campaign. His red card against Sundowns, however, rules him out of Amakhosi’s next fixture against TS Galaxy. The irony of that won’t be lost on him or coach Cavin Johnson after the classy central defender moved to Chiefs from the Rockets just under a year ago. With Thatayaone Ditlhokwe just back from injury this is hardly an ideal situation. Njabulo Ngcobo should step into the side. Edmilson Dove, who’s on the brink of signing a new two-year deal, could also slot in there. Given Msimango. Image: Msimango Instagram WANDILE DUBA IS GOING NOWHERE According to Soccer-Laduma sources, 19-year-old striker Wandile Duba will sign a new long-term deal with Kaizer Chiefs.  “The boy is not going anywhere as the technical team has recommended that he should stay. What they see in training has given them the sense that they can’t lose such a good young player and that’s why they have even extended his contract for another four years. His current contract was coming to an end in June 2025 but now it will run until June 2029. Everyone at the club is happy with him and his progress and that’s why it was not hard to agree with what the technical team recommended to management to keep him for longer,” said the source.  Teenager Wandile Duba bagged his first senior goal for Amakhosi. I’M ONLY 37 YEARS OLD – SUNDOWNS COACH RULANI MOKWENA After losing the Tunisia’s Esperance in the CAF Champions League semifnals last month, the Soweto-born Mokwena, frustrated and disappointed after the defeat, reminded the public that he is still young despite his remarkable achievements with Sundowns. “One of the things that I think South African football forgets, which South African football only remembers when it suits them, is that 𝗜’𝗺 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝟯𝟳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱,” the Sundowns tactician told the media as quoted by iDiskiTimes editor David Kappel via X. “And I’m only my first year as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns. RUMOUR: AmaZulu hijack deal for Kaizer Chiefs target?
Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates might lose out on a reported transfer target with rumours that AmaZulu are making strides to sign the player. Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates Pirates face competition for Mogaila According to SoccerLaduma, AmaZulu is closing in on the signing of rumoured Chiefs target Shaune Mogaila. The Royal AM man has made 15 appearances in the league this season with two assists. In February, we reported interest from Orlando Pirates: “Versatile former Royal AM wide player Shaune Mogaila is now available on a free transfer, and he’s been a target for the Buccaneers for some time. According to FARPost, Pirates aren’t the only side showing an interest. Mogaila can operate on either flank of attack or defence, making him a priceless option. Although not a direct replacement, he’d be a great squad player,” Pirates boss is spoiled for choice Jose Riveiro has a clear bill of health with competition in all departments of the pitch. Against Cape Town City, the Sea Robbers were without Patrick Maswanganyi so they recalled Lesedi Kapinga in the number 10 role. Tshegofatso Mabasa continued his rich vein of goal-scoring form with another brace, taking him to 13 league strikes this term. Riveiro has the luxury of bringing Nkosinathi Sibisi, Katlego Otladisa, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, Evidence Makgopa and Karim Kimvudi off the bench in the Mother City. If that’s not an illustration of the riches at his disposal, nothing is. Innocent Maela and Siphelo Baloni were unused subs, and Monnapule Saleng wasn’t even in the matchday squad. The Buccaneers have safely made their way into the Nedbank Cup final, awaiting the winner of Stellies vs Sundowns on Sunday. Thembinkosi Lorch in action for Mamelodi Sundowns against Chippa United. Pirates star striker Mabasa is his nearest challenger with 13 strikes. Stellenbosch lead Pirates by three points in the race for second place with four matches to play. Pirates host Chippa next in the league, the same team they beat to reach the Nedbank Cup final, while Stellenbosch welcome Usuthu to the Winelands. RUMOUR: AmaZulu hijack deal for Kaizer Chiefs target?
AmaZulu beat Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to transfer target?
AmaZulu beat Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates to transfer target?
The chase for a Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates transfer target has now become a three-way race.  Pirates were thought to be close to be wrapping up a new signing ahead of the new season. It has been no secret that Pirates have been interested in Shaune Mogaila, a long-term target now available for free. The speedy winger recently parted ways with former club Royal AM. It is reported the split came after the two parties could not agree on an improved terms for a new deal. Waiting on the wings, is believed to Pirates, who are club wanted the player even before he joined the Durbanites. Chiefs and Pirates interested in Mogaila This publication reported just that Pirates and Mogaila were close to an agreement for next season. But in football, it doesn’t take long for things to change with the latest update possibly making the Buccaneers nervous. Firstly a later update from this publication revealed that Norwegian giants Valengra are serious about signing the player. But that is not all. It has since been revealed that arch rivals Chiefs are also interested in the player. If that was not enough, it is thought that, he could now be close to signing for AmaZulu. AmaZulu now in the lead? “Shaune Mogaila will definitely be making a comeback to toplight football next season. He was away for a little while to take care of personal stuff, but he is now ready to continue from where he left off. AmaZulu are interested in the player and there is a possibility of him going back to KwaZulu- Natal. This is a player who was on the radar of Pirates at some point and that should tell you a lot about his talent and ability,” said a source to Soccer-Laduma.  It has been a while since Mogaila has been linked with Chiefs or Pirates, however. That could either mean neither team were that interested or talks were overhyped. The latest sides to be linked to the speedster are AmaZulu and SuperSport United. Judging by his age and profile, those have always looked liked the most plausible destinations.

Thomas Tuchel separating himself from the pack as Manchester United players would love to play for him Man United News And Transfer News
Thomas Tuchel separating himself from the pack as Manchester United players would love to play for him Man United News And Transfer News
1 Erik ten Hag’s job security is set to come under further scrutiny with teams around Manchester United getting a strong finish to the season. There is a realistic chance that United register their lowest-ever Premier League finish this season, surpassing the seventh place under David Moyes. No matter the mitigating factors, that kind of display is bound to raise questions over the manager’s suitability. The smoke is starting to develop from the fire as according to the latest developments, a candidate has started to separate himself from the pack. Football Insider reports that Thomas Tuchel is emerging as the outright leading candidate to replace Erik ten Hag next season. The report states that a multitude of factors are working in the German’s favour, who is at the top of the list for INEOS among candidates like Graham Potter, Roberto de Zerbi, and more. The most important one that jumps out is the assertion that United players “would love to play for him” which is going to set a few eyes rolling in the fanbase. Similar reports have emerged previously, with Ten Hag also being a players’ favourite until he wasn’t! In addition, from INEOS’ perspective, he makes an attractive option due to two primary reasons. Firstly, his prior experience in the Premier League, where he guided Chelsea to Champions League titles before the whole club collapsed is a big plus. Secondly, his being out of contract in the summer is a big plus since United are already grappling with financial issues and have a huge on-the-pitch rebuild ahead. Getting a manager without paying any compensation would then be a shrewd move as they will arguably have to pay Ten Hag’s last year of contract anyway. All these factors combine to make Tuchel the top candidate as the clock continues to tick on Ten Hag’s future. It is presumed that only a strong finish to the season and an FA Cup victory would save his job. Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Erik ten Hag ready to move to Bayern Munich if Manchester United sack him Man United News And Transfer News
1 Erik ten Hag’s stock at Manchester United might be at an all-time low, but the world of football clearly rates him highly. Just days after reports that Ajax are interested in engineering a homecoming for Ten Hag, links to Bayern Munich popped up as well. The Peoples Person relayed a report that he is on a “three-four” person shortlist to replace outgoing manager and United-linked Thomas Tuchel. Now, Sky Sports German team reports that Ten Hag is “ready” to move to Bayern Munich in the summer. — Kerry Hau (@kerry_hau) May 5, 2024 The report states that the Dutchman’s first choice is to see out his contract at Old Trafford, which runs till 2025, but if he is sacked, he won’t dither. The speculation surrounding his future is as as it has ever been with United tumbling from one bad result to another. INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have resisted the idea of making a change mid-season and the manager himself has also struck a confident tone about plans next season. If anything, links to Bayern and Ajax strengthen his position as world football might finally have reached a point where a manager is no longer judged by results at Old Trafford. Ten Hag arguably overachieved in the first season and this year, amid a glut of injuries, has struggled while also acknowledging United have missed out on a number of first-choice targets in the window. A lack of proper structure around him has also been pointed as one of the reasons behind his underachievement this year. There is hope that INEOS bringing expertise and structure will lead to a better season next year with this year’s freak injury situation also subsiding. It seems like United might just hold on to the man they have instead of chasing a shiny new toy in the market when the man they have is seen as a valuable commodity by the market. Crystal Palace vs Manchester United: Tactical battles that will decide the game Man United News And Transfer News
Crystal Palace vs Manchester United: Tactical battles that will decide the game Man United News And Transfer News
1 The pressure was already on Manchester United but the weekend’s results have turned up the heat even more. After Chelsea and Newcastle United’s convincing wins, United have to turn up away at Crystal Palace to maintain their push for any European place at all. Palace have started to rediscover their mojo under Oliver Glasner and on their day, are capable of playing some breathtaking stuff. In their past four games, they’ve already knocked off Liverpool and Newcastle, a run which also included a 5-2 home victory over West Ham United. This game is the definition of a banana skin for a struggling United who never look in control of any game. Here are the three tactical themes that will decide the game- Pressing machine vs panic stations Oliver Glasner was famed for his relentless pressing style in the Bundesliga as he is another from a factory of Bundesliga coaches branched from Ralf Rangnick’s “gegenpressing” philosophy. Unfortunately for United, a pressing team is the worst matchup for this jittery buildup. Even Burnley’s comparatively relaxed press got an error out of United last weekend as Onana gifted them a goal. If it’s not the keeper, it’s a midfielder or a defender panicking under the press. This game will be the fight of a pressing machine in Palace vs United’s perpetual panic stations, especially with Harry Maguire leaving United with zero completely fit centre-backs as Jonny Evans might have to be rushed back. Michael Olise vs Aaron Wan-Bissaka Could this be Michael Olise’s big audition for a Manchester United move in the summer? First off, it is not yet certain if Ten Hag will play Wan-Bissaka on the left or Diogo Dalot. Last year, Wan-Bissaka would have been the easy answer because of his shutdown defensive qualities but that version of the player is missing now. In his place is an underconfident fullback who struggles as much in defence as he does in attack. Olise is not the kind of player he would want to face. The Frenchman has truly announced himself to elite clubs with his silky play this season. He finds pockets of space and pops up with the occasional golazo. Wan-Bissaka defending on his wrong side (he’s right-footed) might make it even more difficult for him when Olise’s fullback overlaps and makes a two-on-one situation on the wings. Garnacho will have to run his socks off to protect whoever United’s left-back is because Olise is a handful. Rasmus Hojlund vs Dean Henderson It’s a part of the script, isn’t it? United’s academy kid gets sold to Premier League rivals and has a worldie against his old club when he has a point to prove. Henderson has long put behind his jittery start at Selhurst Park and is now showing the qualities that once had people marking him as a future England No 1. He will be extremely motivated to show United what they missed out on by outperforming Andre Onana on the day. A victory will be even sweeter. Rasmus Hojlund needs to step up and spoil his day. The Dane looked like he was back in scoring touch after his effort against Sheffield United but Burnley was another step back. He struggles to get involved in games and has a pure poacher-like game sometimes where he isn’t doing anything if he isn’t scoring. He needs to do just that if United are to avoid the double ignominy of not just losing to Palace, but giving Henderson something to celebrate about. Alvaro Carreras puts in a marvellous performance for Benfica in spite of loss Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United loanee, Alvaro Carreras, was given another chance to start for Benfica as he has begun to establish himself in the first eleven. After making sporadic appearances from the bench since moving to the Lisbon side in January, Carreras has started two out of the last three games and even found the back of the net for the first time in his professional career recently. Despite a poor performance and result that saw Benfica lose 2-0 away to FC Famalicão and in the process, award Sporting Lisbon the league title, due to the fact As Águias can no longer mathematically catch their city rivals, Carreras shone. Benfica dominated possession with 58% and had more shots as they had 18 to the home side’s 10. Despite a limp overall performance, Carreras put in one of his side’s better displays. He was given a respectable score of 7.3 on Sofascore for his night’s work. The Spaniard blocked one shot and made one interception to repel the Famalicão attack. He also showed his strong defensive presence by successfully completing five tackles. The young defender won both his aerial duels and six out of 11 ground battles. As usual, though, the wingback’s talent shone through in an attacking respect. Carreras had a mammoth 82 touches of the ball and completed 43 out of his 51 passes, resulting in a pass accuracy of 84%. The 21-year-old also completed three key passes and was successful in his one attempted long ball. The exciting fullback whipped in four crosses with one finding its intended target. He was also able to have one shot on goal but it was blocked by the resolute home defence. The result is obviously a disappointing one for Benfica but Carreras will take heart in the display. It was a complete showing where he was solid defensively but showed his true attacking talent. The youngster was very highly rated at United’s academy and was wonderful on loan last season at Preston. It seems that his days at Old Trafford are numbered though as Benfica have openly talked about activating the buy option they have in his current deal, as he has proven himself to be a capable squad member for the Lisbon side. However, United seem certain to include a buy-back option in the deal, if they ever choose to bring back the impressive fullback. The Spanish Under 21 international will be hoping to make another start against Arouca next Sunday and show United exactly what they have been missing this campaign. Facundo Pellistri struggles to make any impact in latest Granada defeat Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United loanee Facundo Pellistri endured a frustrating evening as his Granada side lost out 3-0 against fellow Andalusians, Sevilla. The match was also notable for United fans as Hannibal Mejbri made a rare six-minute cameo off the bench for Sevilla. The two players briefly shared the pitch before Pellistri was subbed off in the 87th minute. Los Nazaríes have already been relegated in what has been a poor season and looked second-best all evening against an improving Sevilla side. Goals from Marcos Acuña, Youssef En-Neysri and Dodi Lukebakio secured the win as the home side had the lion’s share of possession with 61%. The home side was also able to dominate in terms of shots as they had 11 shots on goal in comparison to Granada’s eight. Pellistri’s side rarely truly threatened as they only managed one shot on target in the whole match. The Uruguay international was given a Sofascore rating of 6.6 for his night’s work at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium. The United loanee struggled to get involved as he only had 29 touches of the ball and he could only complete seven out of an attempted 12 passes for an accuracy of 58%. The winger is usually the spark plug of the Granada attack, so the fact he was so rarely involved in the game suggests the uphill task his side faced. He was able to complete one key pass in the game but his two crosses failed to find their intended target. Pellistri was unable to have any sort of shot on goal and was successful in his solitary dribble attempt of the match. He was also quite wasteful with the ball, losing possession 13 times in the game. Defensive work has always been a part of the game he has embraced and this was on show today as the Uruguay international made one clearance and won six out of his 11 ground duels. Granada have four more games of their La Liga season to try and impress before they must return to the second division. From Pellistri’s perspective, he will look at the games as a chance to prove his worth in regard to another attempt to break into the United first team in the pre-season tour or secure a loan or permanent sale elsewhere. Erik ten Hag reveals they are in constant touch with Jadon Sancho during his loan spell Man United News And Transfer News
1 Erik ten Hag has said they are very much in contact with Jadon Sancho as they face a pivotal decision on his future in the summer. The manager was speaking to the press in the embargoed section in the buildup to the game against Crystal Palace and he touched on various topics. He pointed out Bruno Fernandes’ grit and personality as an example for other players at the club to look up to and aspire to be. He said: “Taking responsibility is one of the biggest assets nowadays that top footballers have to show and deliver. “Bruno always delivers, he’s always available, he never misses a game, always plays at a good level and is always giving energy to the team. Such assets are necessary to be successful.” Ten Hag said the Portuguese’s capacity to play through the pain barrier has been “unbelievable”, pointing out a recent example that will raise Fernandes’ standing in the fans’ eyes even more. He said: “Bruno is a real fighter. Last year, for instance, when we played Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final, he played with an ankle that was so thick it was unbelievable. He couldn’t run, but he was still on the pitch. What is fair enough to say is that Bruno is a very good example for many other players.” The manager also rejected any claims that Fernandes’ future at the club is any doubt, saying he “definitely” sees the player see out his contract at the club at the very least. He said: “I haven’t even asked him (about his future), because I know he is Manchester United and I think he is very happy to be here.” Finally, he revealed that Jadon Sancho’s good performances at Dortmund aren’t going unnoticed, keeping the door open for a potential return. He said: “There was a conflict and let’s first finish the season. So stay away from this issue now, it is not important. “We are visiting games. We visited, I would not say all of the games, but we have seen more games from Dortmund where Jadon was performing. “We also had a visit with him, we had a talk with him during his stay there and we will keep going with this process, we will continually be in contact and communicate. We have four important games in the league and then the FA Cup final, so we will see in the summer what’s going to happen.” Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Jurgen Klopp names the most difficult thing about being Liverpool manager Liverpool FC
A very select few can manage Liverpool. Even fewer can be succesful. Jurgen Klopp, though, has passed the test with flying colours and tried to describe what it takes. Klopp took Liverpool from a team struggling to qualify for Europe to world champions in just over four years. Winning the Premier League and European Cup has cemented him as an all-time great, but it was more than just Klopp’s on-field exploits that endeared him to supporters. When asked what it takes to manage Liverpool, the German was at first unsure but went on to say: “I think I understand a little bit of football. I mean that’s probably my skill. “I love people and especially football players so, from that point of view, it was not difficult.” It was a pretty modest response from one of Liverpool’s greatest-ever managers. Before that, though, he did verbalise his thoughts and explained which part of the job he finds most tiring. The German was clear in his answer that doing press and speaking to the media “is very difficult most of the time.” Explaining why, Klopp said: “It’s just that’s really draining when you always have to talk and explain things most of that you cannot explain. “When you’re winning, it’s fine because then you can speak about individuals, fantastic performance, stuff like this, but we cannot do the same when we are losing.” Speaking about post-match press conferences after defeats, the coach explained what he dislikes about the questions he faces. “We single out a player and you speak about him and he was particularly bad, so let’s talk about that for the next 10 minutes,” the German said. “That means that cuts off 50, 60, 70 percent of the things you can say, but you’re still asking.” Klopp is a football man and his comments back that up. “Actually being manager of Liverpool, the pure football side – coach the team, do the stuff we do, grow together as a unit – I love that part,” the boss emphasised. “But still, I’m not the right man to do that as well anymore, but what is really hard is you, that’s the outside world, is really hard… “People ask me ‘Will you miss it?’ “Probably, but I don’t know, I’ve never had it.” While Jurgen may not miss every element of him being Liverpool manager, we certainly will.

Andre Onana reflects on his below par form for Manchester United Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United’s dire run during the business end of the season has ended their hopes of securing Champions League football for next season. Further, the way Newcastle and Chelsea have picked up their respective forms, Man United may end the season without any European football for the 2024/25 campaign. This has naturally brought Erik ten Hag under the spotlight, with many raising questions about his pedigree to lead the Red Devils. At the same time, many star players have also come under scrutiny for their inconsistent performances. Andre Onana is one of them, with many doubting the former Inter Milan goalkeeper’s ability to replace long-time servant David de Gea between the sticks from day one. The Cameroon international has not helped his case by switching off many times in between action, leading to many errors directly leading to goals. In United’s most recent outing against Burnley, Onana rushed out of his area and fouled Zeki Amdouni, leading to the visitors’ 87th-minute equaliser from the spot. Reflecting on his performance, Onana told MUTV: “Well, it’s not only this weekend. It’s the whole season, it has been a difficult season for all of us as an individual, and as a group. But, um, we always have to stay positive because I don’t think we lost the place, the place in Europe against Burnley. “You know, and we all have to take responsibility. I start with myself always. But, uh, it has been a difficult season.” The former Ajax man went on to add that many factors have played a part in United’s current predicament, including injuries and bad luck. However, he added, “We are Manchester United,” and they cannot talk about such things. Instead, Onana is keen on staying positive and making amends moving forward. His and United’s next challenge is Crystal Palace on Monday night. The South London outfit are unbeaten in their last four league games. While the clash would provide Onana to show his quality, the fixture may also hand Ineos figures the opportunity to monitor Michael Olise closely. The Palace winger has enjoyed a prolific 2023/24 campaign and is reportedly considered one of the main targets of United’s new decision-makers for this summer’s transfer window. Jurgen Klopp felt his Liverpool team delivered in terms of performance and result as they put their title heartbreak aside to beat Tottenham 4-2. The Reds’ hopes of winning the Premier League were effectively ended by a series of frustrating results over the past few weeks. But with the pressure off, the Merseysiders were closer to their fluent best as they dealt a blow to Spurs’ top-four prospects at Anfield on Sunday. Klopp, who now has just one more home game remaining before standing down as manager at the end of the season, said: “I really liked the way the boys played. I liked the individual performances, how we played together. So many good things. “It was a really good football game, and I think that’s what everybody should expect from us – results as well. We delivered both.” Liverpool stormed ahead as Mohamed Salah put his recent spat with Klopp behind him to head the opener before Andy Robertson tapped in a second. Cody Gakpo added to the lead with a fine header and Harvey Elliott curled in a sublime fourth from outside the area. Yet after Spurs rallied with goals from Richarlison and Son Heung-min, Klopp admitted the closing stages were uncomfortable. He said: “Did I expect us to be 4-0 up? No. Did I expect us to be at 4-2 and Ali having to make two more worldie saves? No. “But when you think about it, it’s not unlikely because before the game, for Tottenham, if they win they are fully back in the fight for the Champions League. “For us it means we are third. We cannot change that any more, probably, in either direction. “What you saw as well was Tottenham is Tottenham, they are really good and when you let them do that then they’re especially good.” Spurs’ defeat was their fourth in succession and meant they squandered a chance to cut the gap to fourth-placed Aston Villa, who lost earlier in the day. Head coach Ange Postecoglou, however, felt his team at least showed signs of improvement. The Australian said: “Obviously it was a hugely disappointing outcome for us but at least we were more like ourselves today in terms of our football. “Even in the first half, some of our football, our pressing, was back to where it should be. “But we lacked a real cutting edge for sure. We just had nothing in that front third, and that allowed Liverpool to get comfortable. “And when they got forward their front guys were quite lethal in pouncing on our mistakes. “So yes, 4-0, we’ve got a mountain to climb but, when we play like ourselves, we always finish strong.” Postecoglou played down an incident as the players left the field at half-time when goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario stepped in to defuse a heated exchange between Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal. He said: “They care. It hurts them. They’re not going to just be happy with the current situation. They want it to improve. “So there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as it’s done in a constructive way.”

Stefan Bajcetic cameo was like being on the motorway with your bicycle! Klopp Liverpool FC
Jurgen Klopp has admitted a lesson learned when it comes to Stefan Bajcetic‘s reintegration, after a tough first cameo back for Liverpool against Tottenham. Bajcetic made his first appearance for the senior side in over seven months as he replaced Wataru Endo with half an hour remaining on Sunday. The Spaniard had built up his minutes with the U21s after a lengthy spell out, but it was something of a surprise to see him thrust into action regardless of Liverpool being 4-0 up. His lack of sharpness showed, with fellow substitutes Joe Gomez and Ryan Gravenberch also culpable as the Reds lost control and shipped two goals. And speaking to BBC Sport after the 4-2 win, Klopp suggested it was an oversight in bringing Bajcetic on at this stage in his long-term recovery. “The changes we made, would I do exactly the same again? I’m not sure!” he joked. “But Macca played all the time, going up and down, up and down; [with] Wataru, you have Stefan who looks really good in training. “But today obviously you saw, he comes on and it’s like you arrive on the motorway with your bicycle. “It takes then time again to adapt to it, first ball not great, then you go down [a goal], all of a sudden organisation was gone. “That’s not helpful. Then they were then flying. We had that game before [in last season’s 4-3], a similar game before, they are just really good. “But we controlled them for so long, that’s obviously most important. Somebody else can sort that next season!” Of course, this will not have been an afternoon that will define Bajcetic’s time at Liverpool, and in fact it could be particularly useful as he rebuilds. But with the U21s taking on Crystal Palace in a last-16 tie earlier on Sunday, it begs the question of whether his steady uptake in minutes would have been better served with a full 90 at the AXA Training Centre. Nevertheless, it was encouraging to see Bajcetic back in the first team, in what is surely a sign of things to come next season under Arne Slot. Klopp showed his belief in the 19-year-old – misguided on this occasion or not – and Liverpool still came away with all three points.

INEOS grand plans for Carrington emerge as Sir Jim Ratcliffes scope of ambition become clear Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United have fallen behind their rivals on the pitch but that can also be attributed to being left behind off it. The Glazers have never really tried to keep up with their rivals and standing still in football is akin to moving backwards, which is precisely what has happened at the club. Therefore, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s brief after taking ownership stake at the club was more than just buying good players and making a great team. He understood this which is why plans for Old Trafford began developing quickly and now, plans for their training ground, Carrington have emerged. The Daily Mail reports INEOS’ extremely ambitious and grand plans for the training ground which is in line with Sir Dave Brailsford’s “marginal gains” philosophy. The biggest change will be the installment of a new “pre-activation and player performance” zone as reducing injuries has been priority numero uno for the new regime. Some cosmetic changes like bringing more natural light into the facility and moving laundry facilities outside of the area to make football the primary focus are in line with marginal gains. Also notable is the construction of a “winter garden” to provide protection from the notorious Manchester weather and give a reliable space for holding meetings and gatherings. The office space area will expand which corroborates Sir Jim’s latest diktat of ordering staff back to offices and ending the work-from-home culture. The wide scale of changes are likely to cost multiple millions and the upcoming preseason is regarded as the best time to accelerate this process. Just like Old Trafford, Carrington is also believed to have been left behind by their rivals as the Glazers have dithered and stuck to a motto of minimum investment, maximum possible reward. Sir Jim and his INEOS team, therefore, face a tall task of not just modernising the club on the pitch, but equally as big a task of bringing it to the 21st century off it. Daniel Sturridge explains how Cody Gakpo can stop being a glimpses player Liverpool FC
Daniel Sturridge explains how Cody Gakpo can stop being a glimpses player Liverpool FC
After a strong display from Cody Gakpo in Liverpool’s 4-2 win over Tottenham, Daniel Sturridge revealed his advice for avoiding the “glimpses player” tag. Gakpo was a standout for the Reds as they steamrollered Spurs in the opening hour at Anfield, with a goal and an assist from his natural left-sided role. It came after a solid run of form for the Dutchman at the end of a campaign which, while heralding the third-most goals of any Liverpool player (15), has been inarguably hit-and-miss. Speaking as part of Sky Sports’ post-match coverage, ex-Liverpool striker Sturridge – one of the best finishers the club has seen in the Premier League era – offered his advice. Sturridge was asked where he can improve to come back as next season’s leading man up front. “You’ve got to be consistent” The Super Sunday panel believe Cody Gakpo needs to sustain run of games ? pic.twitter.com/Fik2ysg7FS — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) May 5, 2024 “I don’t know if he is an out-and-out No. 9 anyway. It’s more about the role, what the manager wants,” he replied. “Him and Darwin are very different, so if you play one of them in a tactical system, it’s because you’re trying to win in a certain way. “I think with Cody, overall game, when he was at the World Cup with Holland people were looking at him thinking ‘woah, who is this guy?’, scoring in nearly every game. “Since then he’s come to Liverpool, shown flashes, but I think he’s improved everything all-round really. “As an attacker, having confidence is what enables you to play at a level maybe people don’t expect you can do. “I think he needs confidence, he’s not had a long run of games.” Also in the studio, Jamie Redknapp had described Gakpo as a player who showed “glimpses,” with host David Jones putting it to Sturridge whether he can be more than a “glimpses player.” “I think so, but it’s about having a run of games, consistently, knowing you have the trust of your team-mates. All of those things matter,” he argued. “I think sometimes when you’re in and out, and you might have a little injury here or there, you can’t get the run going.” There is certainly a chance, with countryman Arne Slot arriving from the Eredivisie in the summer, that Gakpo is given a more regular role in the starting lineup next season. If he does, the 24-year-old will hope to produce more performances like that seen on Sunday, as he vies for key status at Liverpool.

Mo Salah achieves Premier League FIRST with 10 goals AND assists record Liverpool FC
Mohamed Salah‘s goal and assist against Tottenham has seen him achieve a first in the history of the Premier League, all thanks to seasons of unrivalled consistency. Liverpool’s No. 11 has been questioned of late, and despite not being on top form, he now has 25 goals and 14 assists across all competitions. But it is in the Premier League where he has set a new record, with his goal contributions against Spurs bringing up 18 goals and 10 assists in the topflight this season. Double-digits for goals and assists – again! That now means he is the first player in Premier League history to score 10+ goals and supply 10+ assists in three consecutive seasons, having done the same in 2021/22 and 2022/23. 2021/22: 23 goals, 13 assists 2022/23: 19 goals, 12 assists 2023/24: 18 goals, 10 assists* In 2021/22, Salah notched an incredible 23 goals and 13 assists in the league, and last season he recorded 19 strikes and 12 assists – and he has two more games to add to this season’s tally. It is an incredible level of consistency from Salah, who, as per Opta, is also the second player to hit double figures for Premier League goals and assists in five separate seasons, following on from Wayne Rooney. An unrivalled level of excellence that we have been privileged to witness for seven seasons, and it is a reminder not to take it for granted. It is a personal achievement that Salah would no doubt swap for more titles, but few will rival what he has achieved, and now we will wait and see if he can or will extend his record into 2024/25.

Match Report: Liverpool Women 1-0 Manchester United Women Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United Women’s team could not follow up last week’s late win against Leicester, as they came unstuck against old rivals Liverpool. Coach Marc Skinner spoke before the match that United could not be distracted by next week’s FA Cup final when he stated, “We’ve got a showpiece final next week, but we’ve got a final this weekend, and we’ve got a final, obviously, when we play at Old Trafford against Chelsea.” However, his side were unable to respond as Liverpool had almost the double of shots with 19 to United’s 10. The Red Devils just shaded possession with 55% but a Jenna Clark goal in first-half stoppage time was enough to give Liverpool the win. Not only was pride at stake but also the win saw the Anfield side jump above United into fourth place with only one league game left to play in the Women’s Super League. United almost got off to the perfect start when they caught Liverpool napping as Leah Galton was put through one-on-one in the fourth minute of play, but could not convert as she fired the ball straight at Liverpool’s keeper, Teagan Micah. The home side then had their first chance of the afternoon when Ceri Holland got through some industrious work down the right-hand side and played a great ball across which Taylor Hinds could only hit right at a grateful Mary Earps in the United goal. Holland was once again in the thick of the action as she unleashed a dipping drive that dropped just above the United keeper’s crossbar as Liverpool began to take charge of proceedings. In a back-and-forth first half, United’s Millie Turner had a great chance to open the scoring in the 15th minute when a corner dropped in the penalty box and after some pinball, Turner swivelled and shot right down Micah’s throat. The best chance soon fell to Liverpool just before the 20th-minute mark when Emma Koivisto found herself in oceans of space but could only head against the post, leaving Earps stranded. There was a chance for her to put away the rebound, but it came at her very quickly and from a Man United perspective, luckily bounced wide of the post. There was drama on the touchline when Liverpool’s head coach, Matt Beard, was shown a direct red card for saying something to the referee after Koivisto went down late in the first half. Shortly after, the Red Devil’s best chance of the game fell to the usually reliable Ella Toone. The 24-year-old snatched at a half-volley chance from just inside the box after great work from Lucia Garcia down the right-hand side had set her up perfectly to finish. United were eventually punished in the 48th minute of play when a short corner was whipped in by Marie Höbinger and Clark got the slightest of touches to deflect the ball past the stranded Earps. Skinner had spoken of Liverpool’s threat from set pieces before the match and United were all at sea for the goal. The second half was largely one-way traffic as the Red Devils failed to really create any major chances to threaten the Merseysiders’ lead. Earps made a smart save from yet another long-range effort and in the 62nd minute, Liverpool striker Mia Enderby went on a great run and after beating a couple of players, fired a long-range effort that just dipped over the bar and beat the goalkeeper’s outstretched glove. The Old Trafford side left it late but they did have a couple of chances to find an equaliser. In the 87th minute, Katie Zelem fired in a long ball that substitute Rachel Williams got her head to but could not find the required control to threaten the Liverpool goal. The home team did have one more chance as a mix-up in the United defence led Turner to clear the ball against the Liverpool attacker who could only fire into the side netting. However, the Merseysiders almost paid for their wastefulness when Zelem fired a late free kick into the box, that was headed across goal and substitute Melvine Malard was almost the heroine as she produced a great header that was clawed away by the inspired Micah. The game ended and Liverpool now find themselves three points ahead of United with only one game left in the Women’s Super League, as it looks like the Red Devils will have to content themselves with a disappointing fifth-place finish. Nevertheless, the Red Devils can now look forward to a crucial game next weekend at Wembley when they take on Tottenham Hotspur, aiming to win the club’s first piece of silverware in the women’s game. Mixed feelings for fans as no pressure gives Liverpool license to make life easier Liverpool FC
Liverpool made it nervier than they needed to in their 4-2 win over Tottenham, but their ability to play with some freedom led to some mixed emotions after a nightmare month. The Reds endured a nightmare April with elimination from the Europa League coupled with dropping out of the title race, leaving little to fight for with top four already secured. In the build-up to Tottenham‘s visit, Klopp spoke of the pressure now being off the squad and the freedom it could allow – and we saw that at Anfield. Despite conceding two late goals, Liverpool’s energy and fluidity ensured their 4-0 lead was well-deserved – they were playing without weight on their shoulders and thrived by doing so. Understandably, it created plenty of mixed emotions as some will question where this performance was in recent weeks, while others understand a week’s break and a more relaxed environment changed everything. Best we’ve played in weeks, probably since Brighton and full value for the 2 goal lead. Amazing what a full week between games can do for a team that are fucked and having to go every 3/4 days. — Dan (@Dan23_92) May 5, 2024 playing football without pressure is a lot fucking easier — nate (@natefc) May 5, 2024 Where the fuck has this Liverpool team been the past month though. Best team in the league when we’re on the beach and the pressure’s off — Anfield Fix (@AnfieIdFix) May 5, 2024 Full time: 4-2. All’s well that ends well. Only Liverpool can make their fans nervous after going 4-0 up but it was a big enough cushion for the wobble not to matter. Aside from that brief spell, this was a brilliant Reds performance, some nostalgic moments from Trent, Robbo… — Jim Boardman (@JimBoardman) May 5, 2024 “Just imagine if the team that played today had showed up for the last 4 weeks.” – Sean Sanders on Facebook. As much as the pressure is off, I think the week break probably helps more than you think. We look fresh for the first time in ages. — Rory Greenfield (@RoryGreenfield) May 5, 2024 Really enjoyed that game. No pressure on it of course, but it’s nice to see Liverpool play well again. ? If we break 80 pts I will be happy now. — Jonathan Husband (@jonnyhusband1) May 5, 2024 Can only imagine with the pressure off, the Reds are playing more freely. Pity they couldn’t have played like that the last 6 weeks!! #LFC — Stephen Sylvers (@StephenSylvers) May 5, 2024 A little nervier than it should have been in the end but that was a game that further underlined to me that fatigue was the cause of Liverpool’s recent struggles. No coincidence they looked so fresh and dominant against a good side after enjoying a week off. — David Lynch (@dmlynchlfc) May 5, 2024 There is plenty for the next Liverpool manager to work with. But plenty to work on too. Up the Reds. — Andrew Beasley (@BassTunedToRed) May 5, 2024 No pressure Liverpool are different gravy pic.twitter.com/jb13YJn0cv — frankie (@frankiemctigue5) May 5, 2024 With this only the second win in the last six Premier League games, it does leave a lot of ‘what ifs’ about what could have been in the title race. Klopp called Liverpool’s turnaround between games “absolutely insane” – and not in a positive way – only recently and you could see how much a week benefitted a side that have looked on their last legs. With only two more games under Klopp, we will have more of that please, Liverpool!

Youngsters shine as season summed up 5 key points from Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham Liverpool FC
Youngsters shine as season summed up 5 key points from Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham Liverpool FC
Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a generally good showing and plenty of goals as they beat Tottenham 4-2. Oh, and we scored first! Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham Premier League, Anfield May 5, 2024 Goals: Salah 16′, Robertson 45′, Gakpo 49′, Elliott 60′; Richarlison 72′, Son 77′   One of our better ‘slow starts’ Five or six minutes into this game it was looking marginally ominous. Tottenham hadn’t created anything dangerous exactly, but they had had all the possession in our half, were committing players forward and were looking the more progressive side. Given our propensity this season to concede first and need a big response, fans could be forgiven for thinking this would be more of the same – especially those watching at home. TV broadcasters quickly delighted in showing up Spurs’ lead in touches in the box, passes in the final third and so on, yet by the halftime break it read 14-1 in the Reds’ favour for shots, 8-0 for on target and 2.27 – 0.04 for xG. In this instance, despite a slow start in tempo terms, the Reds did actually look in control of the situation, settled themselves…and blew the opposition away.   Salah serves an end-of-season reminder After a handful of games where it looked as though he’d never seen, let alone kicked, a football, Mo Salah looks back. The Egyptian King scored, was at the centre of at least one potential penalty incident, hit the bar, hit the post, had one saved on the line and had another saved for our second goal – all before half-time. OK, the crossbar was probably more of an intended cross, the post was offside and the two shots saved led to better chances for others – Harvey Elliott and Andy Robertson – but Salah was nonetheless at the heart of everything. As our best forward, he should be the one we’re seeking to get in the best positions with the most frequency, but for weeks it’s been scuffed chances, pointless shots and wasted, inaccurate, half-hearted attempts. This time around he was in dangerous areas with regularity, we gave him service and he consistently either made it count or was very close to doing so. That said, a three-yard miss with an attempted right boot was pretty bad!   Young gun runs and Bajcetic is back It’s end-of-season stuff perhaps, meaning teamsheets aren’t neccesarily as notable as they would be a month ago or midway through the campaign, but it is impressive all the same how Jarell Quansah has made himself a go-to in defence. Only involved originally due to Joel Matip‘s long-term injury, the centre-back has become first choice of late – also in part due to poor Ibou Konate form, it must be said. His involvement this term has been far more than expected, generally excelling as a rookie and was good again here. Even so, moments have exposed his lack of seniority – see his failure to recognise Richarlison’s run for his goal for 4-1 as a good example. Harvey Elliott continued his recent glut of starts to impress far more from the first whistle than he has done previously, including a glorious goal from range. And, finally, the long-awaited return of Stefan Bajcetic is to be celebrated; he was briefly excellent last term in a desperately bad Liverpool team, but his future progression will now be for a new manager to enjoy, not the boss who gave him his breakthrough. That said, Bajcetic’s introduction and one or two of the others’ definitely hampered the pace and flow of Liverpool’s play. The two Tottenham goals came soon after and our own chances mostly dried up – almost as though this game was, as a whole, an irrelevance.   Season in a nutshell Well, if you were away travelling, living under a rock or just decided not to watch Liverpool until the end of the season, there’s no need for the 2023/24 review DVD. This 90 minutes will do you just fine! A fairly strong start, some flowing football, some decent goals, then a bit of a collapse near the end. As mentioned above, substitutions were a part of this. The cohesion of the team looked good in spells, non-existent in others. We were solid in the first half, ragged in the second. We had almost 2.3 xG by half time and 2.74 by full time. A few players kept going; Cody Gakpo deserves a positive mention, Trent Alexander-Arnold was definitely better in this game than any other since his return and Alisson made a save or two. However, this was largely a game of two-thirds good, one-third poor, in a season of exactly the same. As if we didn’t have enough season parallels, a late goal being ruled out because Darwin Nunez was offside just about summed things up.   Two games left Alright, we all know we’ve blown it and the title isn’t really happening. But Liverpool are, mathematically, still able to win the Premier League with two matches remaining. But, the fact is all we’ve really managed here is to lift the gloom a bit, gloom we imparted on ourselves through dismal showings against Everton and Crystal Palace in particular. Still, it feels relevant, if not of vital importance now, that Jurgen Klopp‘s tenure does not end in relentless disappointment and ill-feeling. And there was a danger of that after the above games and those against Atalanta and Man United, the manner of our cup exits and the fact we were close to four potential trophies but will end with only one. Perfection is sought, not demanded, so missing out on trophies would have been understandable if we had been beaten by better teams rather than ourselves being so poor. But that’s at an end for now. Three more points are on the board and Tottenham won’t be in the Champions League next season as a result of this win, more than likely. So let’s continue, finish strong and wrap up the end of an era on a lesser, but still positive, note.

Cody Gakpo shows where he belongs as Liverpool fans hail forwards best game Liverpool FC
Cody Gakpo had an enjoyable day out against Tottenham, scoring and providing an assist in a markedly improved performance that caught the attention of the Liverpool faithful. The 24-year-old has had a topsy-turvy campaign, and Jurgen Klopp has conceded on multiple occasions he played his part in knocking the Dutchman’s confidence by playing him in midfield. Against Tottenham, though, we saw a player with confidence and one who enjoyed switching positions with Luis Diaz, alternating time in the middle with the left wing. The wide left position is where he excelled at PSV, and against Spurs, it is where he dispatched a brilliantly placed ball for Mohamed Salah‘s opener. Gakpo got on the end of a cross for a headed goal of his own in the second half in what was a much-improved outing for the No. 18, and it was not lost on Liverpool fans… Gakpo was playing that pass every week for PSV, but hasn’t been able to for Liverpool because he’s never used on the left. — Josh Williams (@DistanceCovered) May 5, 2024 Can we talk about Cody Gakpo assist? World class lofted pass matched with Salah’s run. Phenomenal player, technically gifted. — Samuel (@SamueILFC) May 5, 2024 What a cross from Gakpo. I really want LFC to find a way to get him into these crossing situations (and having someone in the box) because he’s quite good at it. — Olafur H. Tomasson (@Olafur_Tomasson) May 5, 2024 Gakpo such a clever player. Good movement. Better on ball than Nuñez and just helps the overall flow of the game ??? — keith costigan (@KeithCostigan) May 5, 2024 Gakpo at left wing is so good btw, I genuinely can’t fathom how our management saw a player who’s main strength at PSV was crossing/playmaking and thought we should try and make him a striker…#LIVTOT — Matthew ? (@Matthew2024LFC) May 5, 2024 “Elliot was great today. Salah’s form is better. Gakpo too. Wondering if Slot will really get the best of Gakpo & especially Grav.” – Jota The Slotter in the comments. Gakpo goal and assist when he’s not being forced into the role of utility man is it? pic.twitter.com/dwvCsmi6Fz — barry (@BackseatsmanLFC) May 5, 2024 Cody Gakpo has been absolutely brilliant for the last 2-3 weeks. One of the few whos maintained a level of performance while our season broke down around him. Slot will be excited to work with him — – (@ThoseScouseLads) May 5, 2024 Cody Gakpo simply sensational today. So many gave up on him but there is a fantastic player there — Moby (@Mobyhaque1) May 5, 2024 Gakpo is so much happier on that left side. He’s so much better when he finds himself in those spaces with the ball passed to feet. — Red (@TaintlessRed) May 5, 2024 Gakpo’s best game since the Utd 7-0 win last year. Has himself a goal + an assist now, making a real difference. There’s been no pressure on the game, but he’s been outstanding today. https://t.co/DONKrcTrMR — Will Comish (@WillComish) May 5, 2024 Since arriving at Anfield, Gakpo has been widely considered as the fifth-choice forward, but it will be intriguing to see how and if plans change in the post-Jurgen Klopp era. On Sunday, though, Gakpo showed what he is capable of, and this performance ought to serve him well in the final two games before heading into the Euros and an important pre-season.

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham: Player Ratings Liverpool FC
Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham: Player Ratings Liverpool FC
Liverpool picked up a 4-2 win at home to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, with Harvey Elliott scoring a screamer and excelling overall. Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham Premier League (36), Anfield May 5, 2024 Goals: Salah 16′, Robertson 45′, Gakpo 50′, Elliott 59′; Richarlison 72′, Son 77′ Alisson (out of 10) – 7 It’s been a while since Alisson enjoyed a nice quiet afternoon, but this was a stroll in the sunshine for much of the game. The Brazilian was able to watch on as Liverpool dominated, displaying good awareness at one point after coming out of his box and showing calmness. Made one good save to deny Brennan Johnson down low and was furious that the Reds conceded twice, as his day suddenly became busier. Trent Alexander-Arnold – 8 Alexander-Arnold has been one of Liverpool’s better players in recent weeks and his quality was out in force on Sunday. The 25-year-old whipped in some lovely crosses, picking out team-mates in inch-perfect fashion, and he also defended solidly. Never stopped running and almost scored a ludicrous goal from near the halfway line. Jarell Quansah – 7 Quansah was preferred to Ibrahima Konate – rightly so – and he was a class act for the most part. On the ball, the youngster was composed as ever, and he went about his defensive work in unruffled fashion, despite the two goals going in after the break. Not great for Richarlison’s goal, though, switching off – which loses him a mark. Virgil van Dijk – 8 Van Dijk was in second gear all afternoon and still managed to be excellent, cruising through proceedings. He did everything that was asked of him when called into action, which admittedly wasn’t too often, and his range of passing was impressive. Did arguably get slightly lackadaisical at 4-0, but that’s being picky. Andy Robertson – 8 Two goals in a week for Robertson – what is this sorcery?! The Scot was a bundle of energy down the left-hand side against Spurs, producing forceful runs, and he tapped home to put Liverpool 2-0 up. A long-term replacement will need to be found, but he is still a force to be reckoned with. Wataru Endo – 6 There is no doubt that Endo’s season has tailed off after a fantastic spell at one point, but he did solidly here. The 31-year-old was neat and tidy in possession, if a little limited, and he bit into tackles and ensured the Reds won the midfield battle. Harvey Elliott – 9 (Man of the Match) Elliott hasn’t always done as well from the start as he has off the bench this season, but he was magnificent at Anfield. One outrageous first touch to take down a high ball outlined his technical ability, and he was always looking to provide guile. Made it 4-0 with an outrageous strike – arguably his best goal for Liverpool to date. Alexis Mac Allister – 6 Mac Allister’s form hasn’t quite been what it was a month or so ago, and while he did perfectly well against Spurs, it wasn’t a vintage showing. The Argentine was guilty of losing the ball a few times early on, but he grew into the game and kept things ticking over. Solid over spectacular. Mohamed Salah – 8 All eyes were on Salah after his spat with Jurgen Klopp at West Ham and he produced a great response after a poor run of form. The Liverpool legend was a constant threat in the first half, running at players and linking with team-mates, and he headed home the opener after hitting the crossbar shortly before. Much more like it from Mo. Luis Diaz – 7 Diaz deserves credit for some good performances during a terrible run for the Reds, and he again showed his endurance and trickery. One acrobatic effort would have taken the imaginary roof off Anfield if it had gone in, and he dribbled at Spurs defenders and attempted to wreak havoc. Got quieter as the game went on, though. Cody Gakpo – 8 Gakpo deservedly kept his place after doing fairly well recently, starting in place of Darwin Nunez again. The Dutchman did very well overall, holding the ball up better than Nunez and providing the assist for Salah’s goal, finding him with a lovely dinked cross. He then made it 3-0 with a brilliant header, completing an eye-catching day.   Substitutes Joe Gomez (on for Robertson, 64′) – 6 Made a vital goal-line clearance to keep the score at 4-2, but fell asleep for Richarlison’s goal. Stefan Bajcetic (on for Endo, 64′) – 5 Great to see him back, but was far from sharpness. Ryan Gravenberch (on for Mac Allister, 74′) – 5 A lazy cameo played a part in Spurs giving themselves hope. Needs to be better off the ball. Darwin Nunez (on for Diaz, 74′) – 5 A fairly forgettable showing, barring a trademark one-on-one miss! Dominik Szoboszlai (on for Elliott, 83′) – 6 Fired wide, but not on the pitch for long. Subs not used: Kelleher, Konate, Bradley, Jones   Jurgen Klopp – 8 In his penultimate home game in charge, Klopp knew that a big performance was needed after such a flat run of form. It was hard to have too many qualms with the manager’s starting lineup, with Quansah and Gakpo among those who merited starts, and Liverpool’s display was excellent. This may not have been the huge game we thought it would be a month or so ago, but this was much more like the Reds of earlier in the season, barring the mini second-half collapse. Just one more Anfield match for Klopp – it feels surreal saying that!

Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham: Reds survive late scare after 4-goal lead Liverpool FC
Liverpool survived a late fightback from Tottenham to earn a 4-2 win in the Premier League at Anfield, having taken a deserved 4-0 lead before the hour. Liverpool 4-2 Tottenham Premier League (36), Anfield May 5, 2024 Goals Salah 16′ (assist – Gakpo) Robertson 45′ (assist – Salah) Gakpo 50′ (assist – Elliott) Elliott 59′ (assist – Salah) Richarlison 72′ Son 77′ Set to an upbeat atmosphere on an Anfield flag day, Liverpool started well as they controlled the tempo against Spurs, with a burst of early chances seeing them go close to an opener. Harvey Elliott sent Mohamed Salah through for an effort saved by Guglielmo Vicario, with Cristian Romero then blocking on the line for the young midfielder’s follow-up. Salah soon broke the deadlock, drifting into space to meet Cody Gakpo‘s perfect lofted ball and head through Vicario for 1-0 – his first goal in five league games. There were penalty appeals as Gakpo was tripped and Romero appeared to handle in the box, while chance after chance after chance showed Liverpool’s dominance – though there was the familiar sense that another goal was needed. It eventually came from an unlikely source in Andy Robertson, who tapped into an empty net after a one-two of sorts with Salah that saw Vicario push it into the left-back’s path. HT: Liverpool 2-0 Tottenham If Tottenham weren’t aware in the first half that Aston Villa had given up their advantage in the top-four race, they really should have been after half-time. But they were throttled again throughout the second half, with the outstanding Elliott teeing Gakpo up for Liverpool’s third by pressing the pathetic Emerson Royal and then crossing for the Dutchman to head in. Elliott then got the goal his afternoon deserved, with Royal standing off Salah to allow a simple lay-off before the No. 17 did the rest, finding space and hammering a strike into the top corner. The extent of the lead allowed Jurgen Klopp to introduce Stefan Bajcetic for his first senior outing since September, replacing Wataru Endo to rapturous applause. Spurs grabbed one back through a well-worked move finished by substitute Richarlison, denying a clean sheet Liverpool’s defence – and particularly the imperious Jarell Quansah – deserved. And then another through Heung-min Son, left in acres of space by the half-arsed Ryan Gravenberch to fire into the bottom corner for 4-2. Salah should have poked in from three yards out and Trent Alexander-Arnold almost saw his 60-yard shot dip under the crossbar, before a crucial clearance from Joe Gomez kept out a third for Spurs. Liverpool were able to hold onto their two-goal lead and see the game out, with an eye-catching win worthy of the occasion on Klopp’s penultimate Anfield clash. TIA Man of the Match: Harvey Elliott Referee: Paul Tierney Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Robertson (Gomez 64′); Endo (Bajcetic 64′), Elliott (Szoboszlai 83′), Mac Allister (Gravenberch 74′); Salah, Diaz (Nunez 74′), Gakpo Subs not used: Kelleher, Konate, Bradley, Jones Tottenham: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Royal (Skipp 61′); Bissouma, Bentancur (Richarlison 61′); Johnson, Sarr (Lo Celso 75′), Kulusevski (Maddison 61′); Son Subs not used: Austin, Dragusin, Hojbjerg, Bryan, Moore Next match: Aston Villa (A) – Premier League – Monday, May 13, 8pm (BST)

Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire suffers muscle injury during training Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United’s never-ending injury woes has just got a lot worse with Harry Maguire ruled out for the next three weeks. An official club release revealed that the former club captain has picked up a muscle injury and manager Erik ten Hag’s defensive options have dwindled even further. “Harry Maguire has sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out for about three weeks,” the club announced on Sunday. As journalist Andy Mitten further revealed, the injury was sustained during training, which once again paints the manager’s methods in a bad light. Injury update Players have complained about the intensity of training with many even blaming the manager for Casemiro’s injury recently. The club remain hopeful that the Englishman can return for the all-important FA Cup final while the England coaching staff will also be monitoring proceedings with interest keeping the upcoming European Championships in mind. Harry Maguire has sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out for about three weeks. Did it in training. Has a chance of making cup final. It’s non-stop, this. — Andy Mitten (@AndyMitten) May 5, 2024 “Harry Maguire has sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out for about three weeks. Did it in training. Has a chance of making cup final,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The defence is the worst affected part of the squad currently with Ten Hag’s preferred partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane both sidelined along with Victor Lindelof and young academy graduate Willy Kambwala. The Dutchman had revealed that Jonny Evans recently rejoined training but whether the Northern Ireland international is ready to start against Crystal Palace remains in doubt. United were forced to field a centre-back partnership of Maguire and defensive midfielder Casemiro in the last three games. They shipped six goals in those games. EtH has suffered because of never-ending injury list The former Ajax coach has no other senior defensive options left and in recent games, 18-year-old academy talent Louis Jackson has been on the bench. It will be intriguing to see whether Ten Hag turns to youth or if he is forced to play one his midfielders like Sofyan Amrabat or one of his full-backs there for the game against the Eagles. United are currently eighth in the Premier League table and could finish in their lowest-ever position since the competition’s inception and miss out on Europe altogether. The Red Devils boss is under immense pressure and these countless injuries are proving extremely costly. The medical department has been another major failure and a complete overhaul is needed. Sundowns interested in Stellebosch star
Sundowns interested in Stellebosch star
Mamelodi Sundowns have looked at Stellenbosch FC‘s Jayden Adams. This has been confirmed by Stellies’ CEO Rob Benadie. MAMELODI SUNDOWNS TARGET JAYDEN ADAMS FROM STELLENBOSCH As previously reported across local media, Sundowns set eyes on the 23-year-old midfielder from Iddas Valley, Stellenbosch. According to his boss, Kabo Yellow did make an enquiry in January, but there was nothing more to that. “Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has confirmed interest from Mamelodi Sundowns in midfielder Jayden Adams, but further told SABC Sport there was no formal bid yet from the league champions,” the national broadcaster reported. “The truth is Mamelodi Sundowns made an enquiry in the January window, [and] we informed them he is not available for sale,” Benadie said via SABC Sport. “No further discussions have taken place at all. So yes they are interested in the player. But no offer has been tabled and certainly no deal concluded,” Benadie concluded. Do Sundowns need Adams? Let us know in the comments section below. MORE TIME FOR RULANI MOKWENA As reported last weekend, the 2016 CAF Champions League winners failed in another dream to win the second star. Tunisia’s Esperance completed a 2-0 aggregate win after a 1-0 win in the semifinal second leg. Sundowns completely dominated the game in both boxes, missed a string of chances before Esperance’s Read Bouchniba smashed home a killer winner on 57 minutes. Speaking on the Sundowns pain, former striker Katlego Mphela said the 37-year-old Rulani Mokwena requires more time. “Give him one more year,” said Mphela via iDiskiTimes.  “One more year is not bad. Give him one more year plus an ultimatum of what they want because it is easy for Sundowns to win domestic cups in the country. Give him one more year to prove himself in Africa and if he falls short then they can see what to do in the following year. He does deserve one more season, you never know what will happen. “I think people are judging him based on the money spent in the team and Sundowns wants to win everything. You have a president who wants to win CAF and everything and he has spent a lot of money. “I don’t think they care about the domestic league so much, they want the Champions League. “The last time they did it was with Pitso [Mosimane] so give him one year, one more chance and take it from there,” the Sundowns legend concluded.

Orlando Pirates star the favourite for big award
Orlando Pirates youngster Relebohile Mofokeng is waiting for something special. The Young Player of the Season award is coming his way. ORLANDO PIRATES STAR RELEBOHILE MOFOKENG FOR YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON Stellenbosch FC’s Devin Titus was a hot favourite just a week ago but an new update has suddenly turned things around in favour of Orlando Pirates’ Mofokeng. The Bishop Lavis-born Titus went ahead on goal contributions when he scored last week as Stellies beat Golden Arrows 3-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium. Titus marked 12 goals and three assists in 34 games. Orlando Pirates’ Mofokeng trailed with four goals and six assists in 32 games, while SuperSport’s Shandre Campbell has delivered five goals and five assists in 27 games. Stellies coach Steve Barker said no other young player can touch Titus for the award. “The less said the better, in my opinion we do our business the way we do our business. Sometimes being under the radar is not a bad thing,” Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker said via iDiskiTimes. “I just look at a player like Devin Titus, for example, I again have fear that if you look at goal contributions, assists, and goals scored he should win Young Player of the Season, if it was tomorrow by a country mile. “Whether that happens I don’t know but I do feel it’s those types of instances where maybe not enough has been said about some of the achievements of what individual players are doing and what we’re doing as a team but we are not out there to let people see what we’re doing by telling them, we just go by our business the way we do. “I do believe we will get the credit and reward that we deserve,” the Stellies mentor concluded. NEW RULES FAVOUR MOFOKENG Meanwhile, the Premier Soccer League has confirmed changes to the Young Player of the Season criteria, and they favour the Orlando Pirates attacker. The new update says the award can only be won by players under the age of 21, rather than 23. “The player must be under the age of 21 years old on 1 January in the year that the DStv Premiership season commences“, meaning candidates must be U21 and younger. Those eligible for this year’s award must be born in 2002 or later,” the note from the PSL said, as quoted by iDiskiTimes. What do you think of the new rules, and does Orlandi Pirates’ Mofokeng deserve the award? Should Devin Titus push for the Player of the Season award? Let us know in the comments section below.
