Manchester United target Míchel Sánchez as Erik ten Hag replacement Man United News And Transfer News
Manchester United target Míchel Sánchez as Erik ten Hag replacement Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United may face competition from Manchester City in the race to sign an in-form manager that may just be a fitting replacement for Erik ten Hag. On Wednesday night, Man United had to come from behind twice to defeat Sheffield United 4-2. This kind of struggle could be seen as embarrassing for United given that their opponents are at the foot of the Premier League table. Before the Sheffield United match, United defeated EFL Championship side Coventry 4-2 on penalties to book their place in the FA Cup final. While United had a comfortable 3-0 lead, they capitulated in the final 20 minutes of regular time, allowing Coventry to draw level and send the match into extra time and penalties. While these recent results are indeed frustrating for United, they certainly aren’t anything new at Old Trafford given the tumultuous season that the club has experienced. United find themselves sixth in the Premier League after 33 matches, with practically no way of finishing inside the top four and securing UEFA Champions League football next season. They also finished bottom of their Champions League group during the current campaign, a result that becomes even more disappointing given the lower calibre of their opponents such as Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen. The media has hit out at Ten Hag repeatedly for his underperformance, with the Dutch coach aggressively defending himself amid criticism following the Coventry match. It has since been reported that Ten Hag may face a 25% pay cut next season should he hold onto his current job. Still, there is no guarantee that Ten Hag will remain at the helm next season, particularly if reports regarding other managerial candidates are to be believed. Fichajes believes that United are interested in Girona manager Míchel Sánchez as a potential replacement for Ten Hag. He has proven to be an effective manager for the Spanish minnows, unexpectedly leading them into third place in La Liga and putting in a courageous title challenge. However, even if United decide on Sánchez as Ten Hag’s successor, they may face some stiff competition to acquire his services. Manchester City are also believed to have taken an interest in the 48 year old, viewing him as a potential managerial candidate once Pep Guardiola decides to leave the club. With the FA Cup final coming up on 25th May and United’s Premier League campaign all but over, there appears to be few opportunities remaining for Ten Hag to prove to the club that he is the manager to take United forward next season. Harry Maguire admits Man United players are under pressure despite FA Cup semi-final win Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United booked a place in the FA Cup final for a second straight season by beating Coventry City 4-2 on penalties at Wembley over the weekend. Ideally, this called for a celebration among the fan base and plaudits for Erik ten Hag and his Man United players. Instead, headlines were dominated by everything but praise. The Red Devils’ conceding three goals to throw away their comfortable lead against the eighth-place Championship side attracted plenty of criticism from fans and pundits alike. Antony’s celebration after the penalty shootout win only intensified the scrutiny.  In his press conference, Erik ten Hag made sure to take an aim at media for their “embarrassing” coverage concerning his side’s result and performance against Coventry.  However, Harry Maguire, who is all too familiar with getting an unfair amount of stick from media, is far from surprised by all the “noise”. Speaking to Sky Sports, the England international stated: “I’ve been at this club a long enough time to know that the noise around the place is always here, whether it’s with the manager or the players.” “There are players under huge amounts of pressure and when you lose football matches or go on bad runs, the manager becomes under pressure as well.” Maguire, 31, further suggested that his teammates intend to maintain their focus and stick together during the business end in order to “achieve things this season.” Interestingly, the Englishman, who moved to Old Trafford from Leicester City under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was one of the few players who came away from the Wembley encounter with any sort of credit.  Maguire was absolutely rock solid in the first half. Further, the former club captain was lauded for his reaction after United’s win. Instead of celebrating the result, he approached Coventry players to laud them for their efforts on Sunday afternoon. With a number of centre-backs out with different injuries, Ten Hag will massively rely on Maguire’s physicality as well as composure to see out the season on a positive note. Man United leading resistance to the introduction of hard salary cap in the Premier League Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United are reportedly spearheading opposition against any proposal to introduce a hard salary cap in the Premier League. The Times report that the new football structure at United led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to launch a spirited resistance against the “anchoring” model as they believe it would place England’s top flight at a huge disadvantage in comparison to the rest of the European leagues. The newspaper relays, “Manchester United will strongly oppose moves to introduce the first hard salary cap to the Premier League when new cost controls are raised at the top flight’s annual meeting.” “The proposed cap — called “anchoring” — would mean the top teams could spend only a proportion of the amount the league’s bottom club receives in TV money, perhaps 4½ or five times that sum, on transfers, wages and agents.” Martyn Ziegler adds, “It is not clear what the limit would be, but official figures for last season show the bottom club — Southampton — were paid £103.6million in TV money. The club with the highest wage bill that season was Manchester City, with £422.9million, more than four times as much.” It’s understood that United believe a hard salary cap would make it difficult for English clubs to effectively compete with other elite clubs like Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, just to mention two examples. This is because the best and biggest football players are only likely to join clubs that can pay them what they’re worth. The anchoring model would for example, prevent Premier League teams from landing these stars, who of course help to make England’s first division the most appealing and lucrative football league in the world. United are not the only party against a hard salary cap. Manchester City, who have players such as Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne on their payroll, are also reluctant to see its introduction get over the line. The Premier League already agreed to replace its Profitability and Sustainability Rules from the beginning of the 2025/2026 season. These regulations limit clubs to spending 85% of their total revenue on wages, transfer fees and agent commissions. The Times however note that a section of club chairmen still want more controls implemented in an effort to enhance competition and bridge the existing gap between the elite teams which regularly participate in the Champions League and the other clubs. There are also concerns that state-backed clubs like Man City and Newcastle retain an unfair advantage, and mechanisms should be in place to tame this. The salary cap issue will be deliberated at length during the Premier League’s annual meeting in June. Greater clarity will likely be provided then. 2 Manchester United got back to winning ways as they beat Sheffield United 4-2 on Wednesday night. Familiar defensive frailties and chaotic moments that have punctuated the season were as usual on show at Old Trafford but Bruno Fernandes, as he does time and time again, was the difference maker for United. His two goals and one assist propelled United to victory and into sixth place in the league. However, what the night will most likely be remembered most for was when Under 18 hero, Ethan Wheatley, came on as a substitute in the 89th minute of the match, to become the 250th Manchester United academy graduate to represent the club. Built on our spirit and core values. A special landmark for the bedrock of our football club — Ethan Wheatley has become #MUAcademy‘s 250th graduate #MUFC pic.twitter.com/5f5MNj57Em — Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 24, 2024 The Stockport-born youngster was fresh from his heroics on Tuesday night, when he scored a brace as United beat City 2-1 to win the under 18s Premier League cup. The young striker also recently scored a hat-trick as the Red Devils U18s destroyed Liverpool 1-9. The Old Trafford side have a rich history of blooding youngsters and in 1931, Tom Manley became the first academy product to represent the club. 93 years later, Wheatley became the 250th. The club also boasts the proud of record of having an academy graduate be a part of every matchday squad since 1937, a record that no United manager would ever dare break. It is fitting that the amazing milestone would be reached in this season, because in spite of the darkness of the current campaign, the team’s commitment to youth has been a shining light of hope that things will get better. Academy products Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho have been two of the side’s most influential players and even the much-maligned Scott McTominay has contributed with 10 goals from midfield, including the opening strike in the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City. From the days of Bobby Charlton and George Best, the Class of 92 of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and the newest generation, the Red Devils will always believe in three ideals. Youth. Courage. Success. Struggling Antony fails to justify his selection once again in Man Uniteds 4-2 win vs. Sheffield United Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United winger Antony struggled in yet another game, this time as the club won 4-2 against Sheffield United at Old Trafford. United produced a superb performance across both halves and demonstrated resilience to come back twice and eventually go on to secure the win and clinch all three points. Goals from Harry Maguire, a Bruno Fernandes brace and a fourth strike in the 85th minute from Rasmus Hojlund were enough to see United emerge victorious vs. the Blades, who were obviously keen on causing a massive upset. With Marcus Rashford injured and not part of the matchday squad, Ten Hag decided to start Antony in his favoured right-wing position while tasking Alejandro Garnacho with playing on the left. Despite not getting on the score sheet, Garnacho was brilliant but the same can’t be said of his teammate Antony. The Brazilian struggled to make an impact in the game and apart from a few combinations with Aaron Wan-Bissaka that helped United maintain possession, didn’t offer much. Antony was not at all a goal threat and hardly ever showed a willingness to take on his man. Another frustrating element of his game was his preference to always cut on and look for a shot with his left foot even in instances where going on the outside or hitting the byline were far better options. He was very uninspiring and it was not a shock that he was the first to be taken off by Erik ten Hag before the hour mark. He was replaced by Amad Diallo, who was far better and made a difference in the team. Antony registered a personal pass completion rate of 83% while United as a team had a pass accuracy of 89%. The 24-year-old lost six of the ground duels he delved into. He was also dribbled past on two occasions by rival Sheffield United players. Antony failed to register a shot on target or to challenge Foderingham. Antony’s stats vs. 20th placed side in the Premier League: 83% pass accuracy 6 ground duels lost 2 times dribbled past 0 shots on target 0 assists 0 goals No words. pic.twitter.com/xysCh4Qz8E — Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) April 24, 2024 He had 55 total touches of the ball and only completed two of the four dribbles he embarked on. The South American forward lost possession 13 times. (Additional stats obtained from Sofascore) Going forward, it’s important that Ten Hag stick with Amad rather than waste away the Ivorian on the bench while Antony continues to receive underserved playing time. Ethan Wheatley reveals what Bruno Fernandes said to him during historic Man United debut Man United News And Transfer News
1 Ethan Wheatley has revealed that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes told him he wanted to create a goal for him during the side’s 4-2 win against Sheffield United at Old Trafford. United clinched all three points to move to sixth position in the Premier League table. A goal from Harry Maguire, a Fernandes brace and an 85th-minute strike from Rasmus Hojlund were enough to ensure the Red Devils ran out victors. Apart from his double, Fernandes also registered an assist for Hojlund’s goal. There was another occasion to celebrate for United as Wheatley became the 250th player from the club’s illustrious academy to make their competitive debut for the first team. The 18-year-old made history when he came on in the final minute of regular time. It has been a fairytale 24 hours for Wheatley, who found the back of the net on two occasions on Tuesday night as the U18s beat Manchester City 2-1 to be crowned Premier League Cup champions. From 1931 when Tom Manly became the first academy graduate to line up for the senior United team, Wheatley has now become the 250th. Even more significant is that academy graduates now make up approximately half of all players to have ever sported the prestigious United badge. After the final whistle vs. the Blades, Wheatley spoke to MUTV and gave his verdict on the achievement. The teenager was asked what Fernandes told him when he was thrust into the proceedings by Ten Hag. He replied, “He pulled me to the side and told me I’ve got nine minutes to try get you a goal.” Wheatley added, “It’s a great club with a massive history, especially in the academy. It’s an honour to make my debut and that number 250.” “There were a bit of nerves, but as soon as I was stripped and ready to go, I was excited. It’s not been a bad 24 hours.” Wheatley will be hoping to get some more minutes this weekend when United take on Vincent Kompany’s Burnley. Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Bruno Fernandes runs the show and becomes Manchester Uniteds top scorer Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United came back from a goal down twice to ultimately see off Premier League’s bottom-dwellers Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Erik ten Hag’s team came out with a vastly different approach against the Blades, choosing to hold on to the ball instead of their usual high-transition system. Whether this was necessitated by Jason Wilcox’s instructions and whether this style will continue remains to be seen but there were certain promising signs. United held on to the ball much better, ending the game with a ball possession rate of 72 percent while also passing the ball 722 times. New style, same old Bruno The game was run by Bruno Fernandes, who ended the game with two goals and one assist. He scored the hosts’ second equaliser from the spot before unleashing a thunderbolt with his left foot to hand the lead to the Red Devils. Fernandes now has 15 goals and 11 assists this term, the highest in the squad and more than the likes of highly-praised stars like Martin Odegaard and Kevin de Bruyne. Despite a poor season for the club, he keeps delivering the goods! The Portuguese had 108 touches of the ball, completing 64 passes, 31 of which were in the final third, the most among all his teammates. He made nine key passes, again a team-leading matric. No player has managed more in a single game this season (stats via Sofascore). He also got a full 10 from the site for his display on the night. The club captain also completed five crosses, and eight long balls, the most among United players and also had five shots, one of which was blocked. Star of the show Fernandes has never been one to shirk his defensive responsibilities and it was on full display again at Old Trafford, as the 29-year-old made two tackles and one clearance. The Portugal international did not always have to hit long and hope for the best in this new approach, which suited him as he roamed all across the pitch to try and find space and get on the ball. With the Blades happy to sit deep, it allowed the former Sporting Lisbon star to enjoy one of his best games for the club this season. With 19th-placed Burnley set for a visit to the Theatre of Dreams next, the 20-time English league champions should continue in the same manner and pick up all three points to ease the pressure on their beleaguered manager. Bruno Fernandes pinpoints key improvement area for Man United after superb win vs. Sheffield United Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has called on the team to be more solid and compact at the back, following their fantastic victory against Sheffield United. Fernandes struck twice in the second half to restore parity and then give United the lead at Old Trafford. Rasmus Hojlund’s fourth of the night ensured the Red Devils eventually ran out 4-2 winners. Apart from his brace and an assist for Hojlund’s goal, Fernandes was overall brilliant and did well to put the team on his back and lead the club to victory. The playmaker is in red-hot form and has registered seven goals and two assists in United’s last five appearances across all competitions. 7 goals, 2 assists in the last 5 games for Bruno Fernandes. vs Chelsea vs Liverpool vs Bournemouth vs Coventry City vs Sheffield United …usual commitment, always fighting as great captain. © pic.twitter.com/acC2qW0AFa — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) April 24, 2024 The result has left the Red Devils in sixth position in the Premier League, three points above seventh-placed Newcastle and seven adrift of Tottenham Hotspur who are in fifth. Fernandes spoke to reporters after the final whistle and had his say on both his and the team’s performance against the Blades. He said, “We talk about clean sheets all the time and we want to keep them. Credit to Sheffield United. At the end we came back. We put ourselves in a position where it’s tough to win games. But also it shows a bit of character.” “We also need to be aware that if we control the game like we did in the first half, we have to score our chances. We’re scoring lots of goals. It’s just about that compactness we need to have as a team.” The United skipper added, “I’m really happy to score, but I want to win games more than score goals. It’s part of my role also, to score goals. But the main thing for me is winning games. Lately, we haven’t won as many as we should have.” He explained that United now need to be consistent to oversee a strong finish to the season. “It’s part of the job. You can win eight or nine games in a row, and then as soon as you lose you know you will be criticised. Being a Manchester United player demands winning games.” There is little time to rest for Ten Hag and his players, who return to action on Saturday against Vincent Kompany’s Burnley. Jurgen Klopp explains why he didnt bring Jayden Danns on vs. Everton Liverpool FC
After Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat to Everton many fans were left baffled as Jayden Danns went unused, but Jurgen Klopp has explained why he did not bring him on. The Reds were toothless up front again on Wednesday night, with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez particularly poor as they failed to convert big chances. Throughout the 90-plus minutes at Goodison Park, one of Liverpool’s most natural finishers – a youngster who has been in sensational form all season – was left unused. Danns spent the night watching on, with Salah, Nunez and Luis Diaz playing the full game, much to the frustration of supporters. But in his post-match press conference, Klopp explained his decision not to use Danns, who in the manager’s defence had clocked 75 minutes in Liverpool U21s’ 2-1 loss at Sunderland only two nights previous. “I know we had Dannsy on the bench, I know, but in that physical game, I didn’t want to [risk him],” Klopp said. “And he played [on Monday], obviously we didn’t know that we’d have to bring him in. “The two situations, with Diogo we only learned two days ago and Cody actually only really today. “So now that’s not a game for an 18-year-old boy. Tarkowski and Branthwaite kill you in these situations and that doesn’t help.” While Diogo Jota picked up a knock in the 3-1 win at Fulham on Sunday, scans on his hip were not clear until the following day, while Cody Gakpo left the squad at the last minute to support his partner during labour. That forced a late reshuffle of the ranks with both Danns and Bobby Clark brought onto the bench having played on Monday. Still, the assertion that Tarkowski and Branthwaite would “kill” Danns is a questionable one, given how laughably Salah and Nunez performed. Would Danns have fared any worse at a time when Liverpool really needed to roll the dice in the hopes of a comeback?

Erik ten Hag raves over performance of Bruno Fernandes in Sheffield United victory Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League as they beat Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford. The victory was the first since the 9th of March and allowed Erik ten Hag’s side to jump up into sixth place in the league table. The game was not won however until Rasmus Hojlund gave the Red Devils a two goal cushion in the 85th minute of play, in a match that proved to be a lot more difficult to win than it should have been. Once again, Bruno Fernandes was the hero with two goals and an assist and he has proven once again he is the beating heart of this United team. Hojlund’s strike was also a welcome one, as it was his first since February 18th against Luton Town. The evening will also be remembered for Ethan Wheatley making his debut and in the process, becoming the 250th United academy product to make his debut for the first team. Speaking in his post-match press conference (via Beanyman Sports) Erik ten Hag lavished praise on his skipper’s showing. When asked about Fernandes’ display he claimed, “not only tonight, he’s in very good form. I think we put him in the right position, he found the right spots, and he made the right decisions”. “I’m very pleased with his performance. Bruno showed his leadership, his energy, his transition both ways. He always tries to encourage the team. We’re very pleased with his performance and attitude”. The Portuguese has suffered significant criticism of his suitability for the captaincy role at the club but his critics have quietened down in the last few weeks as the midfielder has returned to his sensational best. The Dutchman then went on the defensive when he was asked if new technical director, Jason Wilcox, would have any issues with his side not dominating in parts of the game like tonight. He bristled at the question and responded, “we were totally in control. I’ve seen a different game, sorry”. “We had two giveaways, and went behind twice. We had two negatives, one focus and one discipline. But we were in control”. One of the main negative themes of United’s season has been giving away needless goals and this was on full display when Andre Onana ridiculously lost the ball, with a poor pass under no pressure, which quickly led to the Blades opening the scoring. Elaborating on the matter Ten Hag stated, “we have to stop this process [of giving away cheap goals]. At the top level, if you want to achieve targets and win trophies, you have to keep the focus and not allow such mistakes”. The United coach also expressed his happiness that out-of-form striker, Hojlund, eventually found the back of the net. “It’s the rhythm, what is broken after his injury. Now he returns and this goal is important for him. That’s what strikers need, they live on goals”. The Red Devils will now look to tighten their grip on sixth place when they welcome Burnley to the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday afternoon. Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Awful finishing and giving up 5 talking points for Everton 2-0 Liverpool Liverpool FC
Liverpool’s league title hopes slipped away, much to the delight of the home fans in Jurgen Klopp‘s final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park Everton 2-0 Liverpool Premier League (34), Goodison Park April 24, 2024 Goals: Branthwaite 27’, Calvert-Lewin 58’ Taking chances — or not It’s been a familiar tale for Liverpool in front of goal. Normally they end up creating enough chances that they can afford to miss a few, but when none of the strikers are finishing, it becomes a problem. Sadly, it’s become expected that Darwin Nunez will miss an easy chance or two in each game, but that has become even more of an issue as taking or missing chances is the difference between winning a trophy or not. In order to win the league, a team needs clinical forwards putting chances away, and firing in goals they wouldn’t be expected to score. Nunez has his obvious strengths, but the finishing issue has become even more pertinent as Liverpool become desperate for goals as they challenge for trophies. The Reds created two big chances in the first half, and their xG after the first 45 minutes was 1.29, per FotMob. Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz also missed good opportunities in the opening period, and this kind of wastefulness looks like it will ultimately cost Liverpool a last tilt at the title under Jurgen Klopp. It’s not all on Nunez, and Salah, as the team’s star player — someone Klopp has described as the club’s best finisher by some distance — has been disappointing in key moments. Andy Robertson mis-kicking a volley in an offside position summed up the lack of threat. You might expect it from a left-back who rarely scores, but the forwards were no better.   Liverpool’s lost momentum Players coming back from injury should always be a good thing, but this Liverpool side has looked disjointed as several players have all returned to the team at the same time. Just as Caoimhin Kelleher was rusty in his early starts deputising for Alisson, Liverpool’s No.1 has not looked at his usual world-class best since re-taking his place between the posts and made an error for the first goal. Trent Alexander-Anold has returned and been an obvious asset, but Liverpool did look like a more orthodox, maybe even more reliable, threat when the playmakers were further forward, as Trent might be were he bombing down the right rather than dropping in. There was a togetherness about the patchwork version of Klop’s side that doesn’t seem to be quite there since players have returned.   The two sides of Mac Allister Alexis Mac Alister was far from the worst player in red, but his position in midfield can affect so much of the dynamic of Liverpool’s play. He was second to things in defence, sometimes resorting to fouls, and his long balls were hit and miss in this game. This is as much a tactical issue as it is a Mac Allister one. Liverpool spent much of the game with their playmakers too deep. By the time Wataru Endo came on in the second half, in an attempt to remedy the situation and push Mac Allister further forward, the game felt like climbing a mountain. Endo’s first touch led to an Everton chance, which summed up the atmosphere into which these substitutes were arriving.   Failing to silence Goodison Park It was an atmosphere in which Liverpool wilted. The games against Man United and Everton always looked potentially awkward in this run-in, and they proved to be so. Ultimately, the first impressions of this game were what set the tone, and Liverpool’s wasn’t good enough to silence the Goodison crowd, and gave Everton too much hope. When their team are under the cosh and making mistakes, the Goodison crowd can get on top of their own team in a negative way. But when the opposite is true, when the opposition give Everton a chance to not only stay in the game but take the lead in it, the old stadium can be a cauldron. Once that happened, Liverpool struggled to silence it. In fact, the mistakes and misses, the annoyance and the complaints from Klopp’s players, only gave Everton and their crowd more to cheer. “You lost the league at Goodison Park,” sang the Everton fans at the end of the game, and though Liverpool lost the league through a string of bad performances and results, this game will in many ways define the end-of-season collapse.   What next? Manchester City, with two games in hand on Liverpool and Arsenal, still have the league title in their hands but Arsenal have looked solid in the run-in. All Liverpool can do is win their remaining games, but on this display that in itself looks like it will be a huge challenge. Games that once would have been looked at and points totted up to see how many they would get in the title challenge, now look more difficult. West Ham could pose a similar threat to Everton, while Spurs, Villa, and Wolves have some really good players who could cause Liverpool problems. It is safe to say Liverpool’s season has petered out, but the players owe it to Klopp to end on a high, even if it won’t end it with the trophies they wanted.

Did they really give everything? Virgil van Dijk questions Liverpool team-mates Liverpool FC
Virgil van Dijk has urged the Liverpool squad to “look in the mirror” after their 2-0 loss at Everton, asking his team-mates “did they really give everything?” There were few, if any, who came away from Goodison Park with any credit; Luis Diaz, who endured a fruitless night on the left wing, was arguably the standout. Defeat in Jurgen Klopp‘s final Merseyside derby should serve as the death knell for Liverpool’s title hopes – and it should be stressed that top four is not yet guaranteed. Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Van Dijk turned the spotlight on the players themselves, urging them to “look in the mirror.” “Very disappointed, in so many ways,” the captain, who struggled throughout, began. “We weren’t good enough.” A ‘very disappointed’ Virgil van Dijk reacts to Liverpool’s 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park ? pic.twitter.com/g4IcvfJGsY — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) April 24, 2024 “I think everyone has to look in the mirror, look at their own performance [and ask] did they really give everything? Do they really want to win the league? “Obviously we’re fighting and we still have games after tonight. “But if we play like we did overall in the game like today, not winning challenges and giving the ref an opportunity to give a free-kick, like he did many times, then we have no chance to win the title. “It’s a tough one. Obviously we have to be much better against a side that’s playing against relegation. “Now it’s time to focus on the 12.30pm kickoff again.” When it was put to Van Dijk that Liverpool looked like they had simply run out of ideas, the Dutchman seemed to agree. “You try to force things. I think we gave too many crosses where they could just clear it quite easily,” he replied. “I still think we had, in the first half, clear-cut chances that we should have scored. “But eventually, we weren’t good enough. We all have to do much better. “We can’t let the season go out like tonight – and the first half against Crystal Palace especially, that was also very disappointing. “We have to do much better, in every sense, it’s a tough one.”

1 Manchester United twice fell behind against bottom club Sheffield United at Old Trafford but ended up clinching all three points with a 4-2 win on Wednesday. A poor error from Andre Onana allowed Jayden Bogle to open the scoring for the Blades before Harry Maguire equalised before half-time. It was the visitors who once again scored in the second half, this time through Ben Brereton Diaz and it was again against the run of play. Skipper Bruno Fernandes then took matters into his own hands as he scored from the spot to restore parity after Harry Maguire was brought down in the box. Bruno carrying United He then unleashed a thunderous left-footer from long range to hand the lead to the hosts before registering an assist for Rasmus Hojlund, who break his six-game scoring duck. The Red Devils climbed back to sixth with the three points and while it was far from a good display, there were signs of a shift in style. Prior to the game there were reports of new technical director Jason Wilcox asking manager Erik ten Hag to forego his high-transition style for a more measured possession-based approach. United had shown they could play while keeping hold of the ball last season and on Wednesday, the 20-time English league champions finished the game with a ball possession percentage of 72 percent. They completed 722 passes as opposed to 288 by the Blades, and this was one of the rare games where United dominated proceedings and should have scored many more but for some great goalkeeping from Wes Foderingham. United play new style Christian Eriksen was played from the start to try and control the tempo of the game and an unlikely sight of United keeping hold of the ball and passing it from side to side while displaying patience was seen. Against Sheffield United, who were happy to sit deep, this ploy worked out in the end and with Burnley to come next, this style is expected to continue. But whether the players can maintain this against the bigger teams will be interesting to see. The Red Devils are still to play Newcastle United, Brighton and Arsenal. Those games are expected to be more a test of whether Ten Hag can get his players to play more with the ball and show bravery and courage. Fans will be eager to see how Wilcox and Ten Hag perform as a duo in the closing stages of the season and whether this new possession-heavy style continues and whether the players can deliver such a drastic change in the middle of a campaign. Harry Maguires messy display against Sheffield United perfectly mirrored his teams inconsistency Man United News And Transfer News
1 It was another uncomfortable night for Manchester United fans as Erik ten Hag’s side fell behind twice before emerging 4-2 victors over Sheffield United on Wednesday evening. Bottom of the Premier League, Sheffield should have been easy pickings, especially at home. Still, Man United continued their erratic form, making life difficult for themselves after failing to capitalise on their dominance. If there was one player whose performance was an accurate representation of the team’s inconsistency, it was Harry Maguire. The only fit regular centre-back that United had at their disposal, Maguire was effective in defence to a limited extent. He made one tackle and a solitary clearance while blocking two shots. Unfortunately, he proved ineffective on several occasions when it came to marking, with Sheffield’s Ben Brereton Diaz slipping past the defence twice to put two goals past United. The away team’s striker came close to scoring his hat-trick when his shot deflected off Maguire’s leg and onto the upright. Defensive inconsistency aside, Maguire was strong on the ball, winning all five of his duels for the evening. Still, he lost possession 10 times; another example of United’s inconsistency at the back. Making 111 touches, Maguire exhibited impressive passing ability, completing 92 of his 101 passes for a 91% accuracy. Three of his seven attempted long balls reached their target. Surprisingly, Maguire was also highly involved in United’s attacking buildups, taking a shot and also winning a penalty that Bruno Fernandes put away. Maguire’s highlight of the match came in the 42nd minute, when United were 1-0 down. Showing great awareness, the centre-back raced into the box during a counter, getting himself on the end of an Alejandro Garnacho cross to score a header. It was this moment that ultimately helped United to claw their way back into the game. While inconsistent in defence and struggling to mark his opponents, Maguire still proved to be an asset at times, scoring for his team and winning a penalty. Still, such inconsistency is not a welcome sight for a team that appears unable to keep a clean sheet regardless of the calibre of their opposition. Clearly, Ten Hag needs to make changes to United’s defence as performances remain inconsistent. (Stats via Sofascore) Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Everton 2-0 Liverpool: Klopps final derby ends in miserable defeat Liverpool FC
Everton 2-0 Liverpool: Klopps final derby ends in miserable defeat Liverpool FC
Jurgen Klopp‘s final Merseyside derby ended in a miserable defeat, all but ending Liverpool’s outside title hopes. Everton 2-0 Liverpool Premier League (34), Goodison Park April 24, 2024 Goals Branthwaite 27′ Calvert-Lewin 58′ Liverpool conceded first, their forwards missed a load of clear chances, and their players looked tired, frustrated and out of ideas. A first defeat away to Everton since Roy Hodgson was in charge and they played like a team managed by Roy Hodgson. For his final Merseyside derby, Jurgen Klopp made six changes to the side that started at Fulham on Sunday, bringing Darwin Nunez and Mo Salah back into the attack. A chaotic opening 10 minutes should have seen both sides score. First, there was a massive scare as Alisson brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a penalty, but fortunately a VAR review showed the Everton forward was offside. The home side certainly started on the front foot. Liverpool themselves, though, should have been ahead in the 10th minute when a superb pass from Trent for Salah looked like a certain goal in the middle but neither Nunez or Jones could get on the end for a tap in. Liverpool were doing themselves no favours, giving away free-kicks around the box and needed a good save from Alisson to keep out Calvert-Lewin’s header. It was no surprise, then, when an eighth foul in the opening half hour eventually led to Everton‘s opener. Liverpool defended the set piece awfully and centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite put the home side ahead. The 22nd time this season that Liverpool conceded the first goal of the game. Nunez missed a glorious chance for an equaliser on 35 minutes, showing a complete lack of composure in front of goal and just blasting his shot at Pickford. Luis Diaz then fired straight at Pickford, albeit a more difficult chance, as Liverpool’s forwards continued to show their lack of clinical finishing. A minute later, Salah scuffed a shot then smashed the follow up over. Absolutely no composure or ruthlessness. Half time: Everton 1-0 Liverpool Liverpool started the second half slightly better, at least able to control the game more and push into the final third. But it was no surprise when Everton doubled their lead off another set piece, Calvert-Lewin with a free header just before the hour. Diaz, one of the few players to come out of the game with any credit, struck the woodwork – but any comeback never looked remotely likely. Two final subs, bringing on Tsimikas and Gomez, showed Klopp had given up. Klopp had lost just one of his 18 matches against the Blues – a behind-closed-doors game at Anfield in February 2021 – but ends his Liverpool career with just two wins in eight attempts at Goodison. Klopp’s farewell has turned into a horror movie. ‘You lost the league at Goodison Park’ sand the home fans but the truth is Liverpool have never looked good enough to win the title. TIA Man of the Match: Luis Diaz Referee: Andy Madley Everton: Pickford; Godfrey, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Gueye, Garner; Harrison, Doucoure, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin Subs: Virginia, Keane, Young, Hunt, Onana, Gomes, Warrington, Danjuma, Chermiti Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold (Gomez 84′), Konate (Quansah 63′), Van Dijk, Robertson (Tsimikas 84′); Mac Allister, Szoboszlai (Endo 63′), Jones (Elliott 63′); Salah, Diaz, Nunez Subs not used: Kelleher, Clark, Gravenberch, Danns Next Match: West Ham (away, Saturday 27 April)

Sad end for Klopp Liverpool fans call for change after Everton embarrassment Liverpool FC
Liverpool produced one of the worst performances of Jurgen Klopp‘s reign at the worst possible time, losing 2-0 to Everton to effectively end their title hopes. In Klopp’s last Merseyside derby, the Reds turned in a spineless display at Goodison Park. Bullied throughout, Liverpool continued the awful form they have shown throughout the run-in so far, with defeat leaving them unlikely to reach either Arsenal or Man City. There are now only four games remaining under Klopp, and there was little evidence in this game that it will be a positive end for the German. Here’s how Liverpool supporters reacted on Twitter, Facebook and This Is Anfield’s comments.   The season – and Klopp’s successful reign – is sadly over… Liverpool’s title challenge ended by their local rivals and they can’t say they deserved anything more. Bullied from minute one by hungrier opponents and so lacking in nerve and quality whenever they created chances. It’s been a sorry end to Jurgen Klopp’s final season. — David Lynch (@dmlynchlfc) April 24, 2024 So, this is how it ends. In the most gruesome, painful way imaginable. Not sure what to feel or think at this point really. It’s sickening that from where Liverpool were just a few weeks ago, it’s panned out like this. — Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) April 24, 2024 What a terrible and miserable way for this glorious run to end. If you’d have offered me third place and a League Cup at the beginning of the year I’d have been delighted to take it—but having EVERYTHING in sight and losing it all is just brutal — Ty Schalter (@tyschalter) April 24, 2024 “Absolutely horrendous for weeks and this is just the icing on the cake. Players mentally checked out of this season at least 3 weeks ago. Criminal behaviour.” – Daniel Dunn on Facebook. Congrats to Everton, fully deserved win and they were always going to win another derby one of these days. Liverpool: utterly shambolic. Have been for many weeks. — Henry Jackson (@HenryJackson87) April 24, 2024 Sad end for Klopp, season completely fizzled out. As for tonight, only one team looked up for the battle, Diaz aside, bullied all over the pitch, missed good chances again. — Matthew. W (@Widgel11) April 24, 2024 In last month LFC have gone out of 2 cups and lost to Crystal Palace and Everton to end the title dream. Did not see such a poor end to the season coming. Really disappointing — keith costigan (@KeithCostigan) April 24, 2024 But entirely exhausting. Several hurdles too many. Playing this style of football at this level for so long is no mean feat. It’s awful to see the season dwindle in such a manner, but it’s a sport of the finest margins. 2/2 — Danny Gallagher (@Danny7Gallagher) April 24, 2024 There’s a lot to unpack and it’s been an all too common occurrence unfortunately – a side that runs out of steam in April. This is particularly worse as the tactics have fallen off a cliff, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but this is a damp ending. — Chris Williams (@Chris78Williams) April 24, 2024 Season over. Just a shame we got to final part and messed it. Fuck it let’s see what next season brings now — Juice Guy (@A_GymGuy) April 24, 2024 Everton safe from the drop. Liverpool title race over. Can’t remember a season when we imploded so badly in April. — Jay (@Jay82_LFC) April 24, 2024 “A sad ending to what has been a very lucky season for late, late winners even when we didn’t deserve to have won.” – PKP in the comments. A painful lack of quality and fight from Liverpool. They have been a tough watch for weeks. — Jamie Holme (@JamieHolme) April 24, 2024 “Abject. Maybe Klopp is burnt out, he has to take his fair portion of the blame. But many of those players looked like they couldn’t be bothered or they froze under the pressure. No I don’t count Luis Diaz‘s running around because as usual there’s no end product. “Massive changes needed. And hopefully we use the next 4 games to phase out those who we don’t want anymore. This should absolutely be the last games for Nunez and Salah and Diaz as a combination. It’s a pathetic combination with no footballing intelligence. “More of Gakpo, Danns, Bajcetic, Quansah, Elliott please. “Secure top 4 now and build on next season with the right player sales and purchases.” – Srikanth Suresh in the comments. One things for certain, I’m glad the recruitment is back in the hands of the professionals. — Rory Greenfield (@RoryGreenfield) April 24, 2024 What an absolutely embarrassing performance. The final Merseyside derby of Jurgen Klopp‘s Liverpool reign proved his worst, his first loss at Goodison and the most cowardly performance of the season. Everton 2-0 Liverpool Premier League (35), Goodison Park April 24, 2024 Goals: Branthwaite 27′, Calvert-Lewin 57′ Alisson Becker – 5 (out of 10) Escaped damage after conceding a penalty on five minutes when VAR ruled it offside, but there was no reprieve when he couldn’t keep out Branthwaite’s finish. Nowhere near the second which was off a set piece. Decent save from McNeil just before it. Trent Alexander-Arnold – 4 Played two extremely good passes in behind the defence, but aside from that, a dismal first half. Stopped very little defensively, wasn’t on the cover a couple of times and other passes were overhit, too straight, too stray. Absolutely shit himself when Calvert-Lewin jumped in front of him for 2-0 and was the wrong side to begin with. Atrocious, horrific and abysmal lack of effort to stop him simply nodding in. A gutless all-round showing from the local who is supposed to be vice captain. Ibrahima Konate – 3 Given the absolute run-around by Calvert-Lewin on the ground and in the air. Nonsense defending to give away a succession of free-kicks and not deal with dangerous balls into the box. A genuinely awful attempt at clearing led to the opening goal, beyond schoolboy poor. Lucky to have lasted an hour. Virgil van Dijk – 3 A lot of pointing and shouting at his teammates but our captain also missed out on plenty of moments to deal with threats and clear danger in the box. Booked near the end of the first half for berating the ref after Diaz gave a foul away, also lost the header for 2-0. Andy Robertson – 4 Got forward on the overlap a couple of times and then stayed forward near the end of the first half, but the deliveries were not great. Struggled to stop attacks down his flank. Fluffed his lines when well-placed after the restart, made a good block when Everton threatened a third. Kept making runs forward at least. Alexis Mac Allister – 4 That purple patch of elite form has very much gone. Saw lots of the ball in deep areas but unable to do enough with it. Didn’t pass it quickly enough, committed too many fouls. Moved forward after the treble sub but still got nowhere with any kind of creativity. Looks knackered, completely overplayed. Dominik Szoboszlai – 3 When we saw him walk off the pitch to the dressing room at half time, that was about the first visual confirmation we had that he was playing. An absolute ghost display, more concerned with pretending he’d been fouled than anything else second half. Shouldn’t start again this season on his recent showings. Curtis Jones – 3 Outfought in the first half and committed a lot of silly fouls, admittedly some of which were incredibly soft but still pointless contacts. Definitely upped his work rate second half but no greater quality on the ball, which was required as well. Mohamed Salah – 4 Almost anonymous in the first half. We gave him very little although he did create two almost-goals: a knock across the six-yard box, cleared from under the bar, then a touch into Nunez’s path for a clear shot. However when it comes to his own chances, at the moment it really looks like he’s never kicked a ball in his life. Two sliced, scuffed shots were way off target before the break, about another four blocked after it. Skied another from near the penalty spot. Nothing was clean and smooth, more to the point, nothing was accurate. Darwin Nunez – 3 Couldn’t control a ball for the first half-hour then smashed a shot straight at Pickford with the whole goal to aim at. What did he do thereafter? A header or two, teed up Salah once and Diaz once, very little else. Nowhere, nowhere, nowhere near enough. Not clinical, not ruthless, not what you want for your centre-forward. Plays like a petulant child. Luis Diaz – 6 – Man of the Match Just about the only outfield player who can have any pride in his performance. Plenty of forceful running, attempted dribbles and actual work rate off the ball. Almost equalised right on half time, an awkward half-volley saved by the keeper. Started the second 45 with the force and intensity the entire team needed, but too few matched him. Brilliant first touch throughout and smacked the post with one ferocious shot. Booked late on for giving a shit.   Substitutes Wataru Endo (on for Jones, 63′) – 4 – Won the odd loose ball but nothing too progressive. Couple of silly fouls. Looks miles off the pace. Harvey Elliott (on for Szoboszlai, 63′) – 5 – A bit of energy but not the impact we’ve seen previously. One shot tipped over. Done little wrong all season. Jarell Quansah (on for Konate 63′) – 7 – Played a normal game, which was a ridiculously big upgrade on some. Actually put in a tackle, too. Kostas Tsimias (on for Robertson 83′) – 6 – Seven minutes, resting Robbo for Saturday. Joe Gomez (on for Alexander-Arnold 83′) – 6 – As above. Subs not used: Kelleher, Clark, Gravenberch, Danns   Jurgen Klopp – 3 Everything about the players’ performance is on them, every single misplaced pass, every single tackle they failed to win, every single time they opted against running with their man, challenging forcefully, doing enough to win a header. That’s on the players. The selection, the set-up, the preparation and the substitutions? They are on Jurgen Klopp, and none of them were right, none of them were effective. Far more damning, nothing changed the flow of the game, the danger Liverpool posed or the approach taken to try and… you know, score a goal? Let alone two to not lose, or indeed three to win. Liverpool would be joint top of the Premier League with a win with a few games left; the performance was as though nobody told the club, or if they did, they were scared of it. Either one is an indictment of Klopp’s handling of the group ahead of this game. And in the context of the derby, the Reds absolutely shit out of the challenge of it. They looked surprised that Everton played the way they did, forced the fouls they did, played as hard as they did. Why? This was basic, obvious, blindingly stupid. And on the sidelines, nothing was done about it or to change Liverpool’s way of coping with it or matching it. What on earth was the double sub of full-backs with seven minutes to play for? Given up. A pathetic night.

Three things we learned as Bruno Fernandes fires Man United to 4-2 win vs. Sheffield United Man United News And Transfer News
Three things we learned as Bruno Fernandes fires Man United to 4-2 win vs. Sheffield United Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United looked to put the embarrassment of their capitulation in the FA Cup semi-final vs. Coventry City behind them when they hosted Premier League strugglers Sheffield United at Old Trafford. With so many absentees within the ranks due to injuries, Ten Hag started Andre Onana in goal with a defensive four of Diogo Dalot, Casemiro, Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ahead of the Cameroonian. Scott McTominay dropped out of the team and was replaced by Christian Eriksen, who partnered Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in midfield. Rasmus Hojlund led the line with Antony and Alejandro Garnacho on either side of him. Marcus Rashford was not part of the matchday squad due to a physical setback. Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 4-2 win against Sheffield United. Dominant first-half performance United were easily the dominant side in the opening 45 minutes and the side would have felt slightly disappointed to head down the tunnel with the score at 1-1. Ten Hag’s men had the lion’s share of possession (83%) and controlled proceedings while mostly limiting the Blades to rare and unfruitful overtures at Onana’s goal. United only faced three shots, with two of these being on target. In comparison, the Sheffield goalkeeper, Foderingham, faced 17 shots and was required to immediately intervene on seven separate occasions. Despite being in the driving seat, United were sucker punched in the 35th minute. Onana’s poor ball to Dalot was intercepted by Jayden Bogle, who made no mistake from close range to give his team the lead. However, the Red Devils were not shaken or fazed as has largely been the case all season. They maintained their calm and composure and got their reward just seven minutes later via Maguire. The England international headed in the ball to restore parity. Maguire’s goal means that he also now scored in back-to-back matches for the first time in his Old Trafford career – the defender’s renaissance tour continues. Harry Maguire has scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his Man Utd career. He’s scored two goals against Sheffield United in the Premier League, the joint-most he has managed against a single opponent in the competition. Loves a goal against his Boyhood club. pic.twitter.com/VPDn28J8H5 — Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) April 24, 2024 Garnacho had two clear-cut opportunities to score when through on goal but in both instances, the Argentine winger was foiled by Foderingham. Eriksen and Fernandes also had a few sights at goal between them, as did Mainoo. Defensively, United were solid and had an answer for almost every question Chris Wilder’s men asked of them. Maguire and Casemiro were solid as a unit and didn’t let the rival forwards get any joy. Earlier today, a report covered by The Peoples Person suggested that possession-based football is the way the United owners led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his key men like Dave Brailsford and newly-appointed technical director Jason Wilcox want to play moving forward. If the report holds true and Ten Hag has indeed been directed to implement this strategy, evident in the match against Sheffield, fans might be in for an exciting shift from the chaotic scenes they’ve grown accustomed to this season. Amad should clearly be ahead of Antony in the pecking order In yet another game, Antony failed to justify his inclusion in the starting XI. Against Coventry last weekend, he came on from the bench and did next to nothing during the time he was on the pitch. In fact, he courted controversy and became the topic of ridicule and criticism when he elected to cup his ears at the Coventry stars after Hojlund’s winning penalty. With Rashford out, Ten Hag’s decision was to either pick Amad or the ineffective Brazilian once more. The United boss opted for the latter and it blew up in his face. Apart from some little combinations with Wan-Bissaka on the right flank to help the team keep possession, Antony didn’t offer much else. Not to say that he made a mistake or anything like that but considering his price tag and the expectations on his shoulder, more is expected of him. It was not a surprise that the 24-year-old was the first to be taken off just before the hour mark. Contrast Antony’s uninspiring display to Amad’s when the Ivorian was thrust into the proceedings. Amad contributed more to United against Sheffield than his teammate. He retained the ball well and looked like a threat any time he got on it. Amad also displayed a willingness to go on the outside or hit the byline, contrary to Antony whose preference is to always cut inside to attempt to cut in and get a shot away on his left foot. Another aspect of Amad’s play that was very noticeable was his movement, both on and off the ball. He wasn’t at all static. The forward was constantly on the move – something which helped stretch the Sheffield backline and open up spaces for the rest to exploit. This was very helpful considering just how deep the Blades positioned themselves. It was not lost on many people just how much the forward line function as a cohesive unit with Amad in there. He makes it all tick. Amad brings much more to the table compared to Antony – a fact that continues to be proven to be true with each passing game. There is little benefit to be gained in giving Antony significantly more minutes at his expense. Fernandes hitting form at the right time for United United captain Fernandes registered a brace against Sheffield and it was a crucial double from the club’s perspective. His first was an equaliser for the 20-time English champions, who had gone behind again just five minutes after the break. Fernandes then produced a thunderbolt strike in the 81st minute, which turned it around for United and gave them a much-deserved lead. The Portuguese playmaker didn’t finish there as he also registered an assist for Hojlund’s goal and fourth for United against Sheffield. Fernandes is hitting form at just the right time for United, while the club is vying for a Europa League spot. Courtesy of Newcastle’s loss at the hands of Crystal Palace, United are now back in sixth position in the Premier League. The United skipper has scored or registered 26 goals this season. To put into context how on-fire he has been, the 29-year-old has more goal contributions to his name than Kevin de Bruyne and Martin Odegaard. Bruno Fernandes has scored or assisted 24 goals this season, more than: M. Odegaard (20) K. De Bruyne (19) J. Musiala (19) B. Silva (15) D. Szoboszlai (11) “Having a bad season…” pic.twitter.com/1e6rA30IvK — Statman Dave (@StatmanDave) April 24, 2024 In United’s last eight games, Fernandes has scored eight times and has also managed three assists. During a tumultuous period for the club, he is once again showing why he is the main man and the team’s undisputed leader. Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Manchester United 4-2 Sheffield United: Player Ratings Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United beat Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford tonight. Here are our player ratings for the game- (A score of 6 is around average) Andre Onana 4- Shades of early season Onana were back as he passed it straight to the opposition from which they scored a shock opener. Diogo Dalot 7.5- Went to the left and reprised his inverted role as he came into the midfield to help shield Eriksen on transitions. Indispensable right now. Harry Maguire 7- Fine header for the equaliser in a display that didn’t need much from him in defence. Casemiro 6- Sheffield didn’t threaten at all apart from the freak opener he wasn’t at fault for so it was a serene day for him. Aaron Wan-Bissaka 5- Much more confident after returning to his favoured right-back role although quality on the ball remains an issue. Kobbie Mainoo 7- Has become the first name on the teamsheet in quick time and continued his good form with another composed display. Christian Eriksen 5- Was found wanting on a couple of transitions but enjoyed himself on the ball as Sheffield were obliging opposition. Antony 4- A Bit too eager to take on the shot but it’s always predictable. Just doesn’t look like he’s Premier League level even though there are occasional flashes. Bruno Fernandes 9- An extremely well-taken double takes him to seven in his last six. He’s head and shoulders above everyone despite being in a dysfunctional team as he assisted Hojlund too. Heartbeat of this team. Alejandro Garnacho 7- Assisted Maguire’s goal from the free kick and gave Mason Holgate a tough time with his direct play, leading to a booking. Rasmus Hojlund 6- Good game for him to find his form again as he scored United’s fourth despite being on the periphery for much of the game. Substitutes: Amad 7- Came on for Antony and the lift in the collective quality of the team was clear immediately as he buzzed about and never stopped trying to look for a killer pass. Needs to be starting. Scott McTominay 5- No late rescue act this time and remains limited in other areas of the game. Ethan Wheatley 6- Came on late as United’s 250th academy debutant in a special moment for the youngster. Sofyan Amrabat 6- Subbed on along with Wheatley as United aimed to see out the game. Manager Erik ten Hag 6– A much-improved display albeit against the worst side in the league. Then again, Coventry were no heavyweights either. There was more control and calmness to the game and that eventually translated to the result although not without hiccups. Something to build on, at least in terms of philosophy. Manchester United 4-2 Sheffield United: Player Ratings Man United News And Transfer News
Match Report: Manchester United 4-2 Sheffield United Man United News And Transfer News
Match Report: Manchester United 4-2 Sheffield United Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United won 4-2 against Sheffield United following what was another erratic performance from Erik ten Hag’s side. With Sheffield United sitting at the bottom of the Premier League, this match is a must-win for Man United, especially at home. United got the match off to a fiery start, with Diogo Dalot thumping a long-range effort goalward that the away keeper had to tip over the bar. Unfortunately, Bruno Fernandes’ corner was easily cut out. Andre Brooks appeared to cause United’s defence some problems, dribbling past Christian Eriksen and Aaron Wan-Bissaka before Wan-Bissaka tracked back to dispossess him. Erik ten Hag’s team would need to show more defensive awareness going forward in order to avoid conceding early. In the ninth minute, United were on the breakaway when Fernandes threaded a through ball to Antony. The Brazilian laid the ball off for Eriksen, whose shot was blocked by Sheffield goalkeeper Wes Foderingham before the offside flag was raised. United continued to pile on the pressure, camping in the underdogs’ final third. A Fernandes’ corner found Casemiro, who slammed the ground in frustration after his header went wide. Garnacho gave away the ball in the 13th minute to Cameron Archer, whose effort veered wide. Following the restart, the underdogs regained possession, with Ben Brereton Díaz getting a shot on target. United’s lack of defensive structure is worrying. The Argentine winger almost compensated for his flaw minutes later, letting rip a strong shot on target to force a save from the Sheffield goalkeeper. Following a prolonged period of pressure, United were unable to find a way through the Sheffield defence. Out of what appeared to be desperation, Garnacho cut back to Eriksen, who ballooned his long-range effort over the crossbar. Moments later, United launched a far quicker attack, with Garnacho weaving past the away side’s defenders to take a close-range shot. Unfortunately for him, his effort was denied by a fine save. A Fernandes cross found its way into the box, with Antony hitting a snapshot hard and low only to be denied by the impressive Sheffield keeper. Following the corner, Antony received possession yet again, this time firing a left-footed shot wide. On the 30-minute mark, United almost let Sheffield through, with the defence failing to mark Brereton. Fortunately, they were able to regroup just in time to stop the danger. A moment later, United launched a blistering counter, with Hojlund taking a shot from the left to force a leg save from Foderingham. Following another prolonged period of possession for United, Fernandes broke through the defence, cutting back to Mainoo whose shot was saved. Only afterwards did the referee blow the whistle for offside. In the 34th minute, disaster struck, as Andre Onana accidentally passed the ball to the opposition. His blunder gave Jayden Bogle the opportunity to slip past the defence and slot the ball past Onana into the net. While United had 84% possession and 11 shots, this all counted for nothing as the away team grabbed the lead in what was an utter humiliation for United. Fernandes took two long-range shots, one which sailed over the top and another that the goalkeeper caught. The frustration on the United skipper’s face was evident given the embarrassing scoreline. United earned a free-kick when Mainoo was brought down outside the box. Fernanes’ cross found Garnacho on the left, whose cross found Harry Maguire. While Maguire’s header was sublimely directed into the net, VAR decided to check for offside. Ultimately, the goal stood, ensuring that United were back in the game. On the stroke of half-time, Onana struck a sublime long ball that found Dalot. The full-back laid the ball off to Garnacho, whose shot was saved by the Sheffield keeper who has clearly been deserving of his wages this evening. In three minutes of added time, the underdogs’ defence refused to capitulate to United’s offensive pressure. United would be disappointed with themselves for going into the break 1-1 given their dominance throughout the half. United came out swinging in the second half, with Garnacho getting on the end of a counter-attack only for his shot to be saved. Sadly, this appeared to be just an illusion, as Brereton got on the end of a through ball and put it away, putting Sheffield in front yet again. 55 minutes in, Antony’s night came to an end as he was replaced by Amad Diallo. Diogo Dalot then got on the end of a through ball however he procrastinated long enough to be tackled before he got the shot off. On the hour mark, Maguire was brought down in the box just as he nipped the ball to Dalot. While Dalot put the ball in the net, the referee blew the whistle and awarded United a penalty. Following a rare occurrence when United players swarmed the ref to complain about a penalty awarded in their favour. Ultimately, such protests were in vain, as Fernandes comfortably put away the penalty to level the scoreline yet again. Scott McTominay replaced Eriksen in the 65th minute, providing United with some additional firepower up front as they pursue a winner. In the 66th minute, Sheffield almost grabbed the lead for a third time when Brereton took a spontaneous effort that rocketed off of Maguire’s legs and scraped the upright. 74 minutes in, Brereton got a shot off a corner that was blocked in front of goal. Despite calls for a handball, VAR found that there was no evidence to suggest that a penalty be awarded. In the 80th minute, Fernandes produced the first moment of magic of the game. Shifting the ball from his right foot to his left, he curled a long-range effort into the right corner of the goal, handing United the lead for the first time this evening. In the 85th minute, United put some daylight between themselves and the visitors when Hojlund got on the end of a Fernandes’ pass and poked it into the net. A fine finish for Hojlund following a subdued appearance from the Dane. As nine minutes of added time were awarded, Rasmus Hojlund made way for Ethan Joseph Wheatley, an academy graduate making his first team debut, while Kobbie Mainoo was subbed off for Sofyan Amrabat. Four minutes into stoppage time, Garnacho came close to scoring yet again, with his effort forcing a save from Foderingham. While United held on for the win, it was yet another unconvincing performance from Ten Hag’s side, doing poorly to make the most of their dominance and ultimately squeaking through after falling behind twice. Starting XI: Onana, Maguire, Fernandes, Hojlund, Eriksen, Garnacho, Casemiro, Dalot, Antony, Wan-Bissaka, Mainoo Subs: Amad, McTominay, Wheatley, Amrabat Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? I know the solution at Kaizer Chiefs ex-coach VV open for return
Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Vladimir ‘VV’ Vermezovic says he is open to returning to Amakhosi if the club offers him a contract. The Serbian tactician led the team for three seasons between 2009 and 2012. During this time he guided the team to two Telkom Knockout Cup triumphs in his first two campaigns with the club. He was sacked before the end of the season and later replaced by Stuart Baxter. Since Baxter’s departure in 2015, the Glamour Boys have failed to win a single trophy. Earlier this week, The South African mentioned why ‘VV’ should return as Kaizer Chiefs coach next season. Vermezovic(60) was responsible for turning Amakhosi into title contenders for the three seasons he was in charge. Speaking to KickOff, the Serbian coach revealed he was eager to return to Chiefs. “Of course, why not,” Vermezovic said to KickOff when asked about his interest in the Amakhosi vacant post. “I have good memories from my time at Chiefs. I made some mistakes just like others also made mistakes, but these are all things that happen in the world of football. Ex-Khosi coach VV open for Kaizer Chiefs return “However, with the experience that I now have about South African football, I can deal differently with some things. I understand the environment better now,” he said. “To understand the mentality of people in that space is very important and that is why I had some problems in the beginning when I got there. The mentality was totally different, but later it became much better. “Back then everything was new for me, but now I have a better understanding. For Kaizer Chiefs, it is too much to hear that they have gone almost 10 years without winning a trophy,” he added. VV has had success at Kaizer Chiefs and was known for his no-nonsense approach as a coach. “Everything is about trophies at Chiefs. I know that because I was there. I know the solution for what is happening at Chiefs. “Of course, the fans will not be happy if you don’t win games and don’t win trophies. Vladimir Vermezovic enjoyed his time at Chiefs “I remember that when I came to Chiefs in 2009, the club was in a better situation than now. It looks bad now,” Vermezovic said. Despite his stint with Kaizer Chiefs, VV was also a coach at Orlando Pirates, helping them win the 2014 Nedbank Cup.

Explained: Why Cody Gakpo is not in the Liverpool squad vs. Everton Liverpool FC
Explained: Why Cody Gakpo is not in the Liverpool squad vs. Everton Liverpool FC
Cody Gakpo was a late omission from Liverpool’s squad for the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night, with Jurgen Klopp calling up Bobby Clark in his place. The Reds are at Goodison Park for the 244th derby in history and the last of Klopp’s reign, with two key absentees in attack. Neither Gakpo nor Diogo Jota made the trip across Stanley Park, though unlike the latter, there is no injury for the Dutchman. Instead, Gakpo is absent as his partner, Noa van der Bij, has gone into labour as they expect their first child. • READ: Confirmed Liverpool lineup vs. Everton with 6 changes The decision was therefore made for Liverpool’s No. 18 to leave the squad, with Clark making the substitutes’ bench in his place. Luis Diaz is believed to have kept his place in the starting lineup as a result of this news, with Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez joining him up front. Beyond Clark, Klopp’s main attacking options on the bench are Harvey Elliott and Jayden Danns, with the absence of Jota due to a new hip injury a major blow. There were six changes to the side that beat Fulham 3-1 at the weekend, with Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones coming in along with Salah and Nunez. Aside from Jota, Gakpo and Elliott, Jarell Quansah, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all dropped out of the side, instead making the bench at Goodison Park. Gakpo has found improved form of late, particularly impressing when used in his natural role on the left wing, but that will be missing this time out.

Confirmed Liverpool lineup vs. Everton: 6 changes Salah and Nunez start Liverpool FC
Jurgen Klopp has made six changes for his final Merseyside derby, as Liverpool visit Everton needing a win to maintain their title hopes. The Reds are now in the backseat in terms of their title challenge, but can keep up the pressure on Arsenal and Man City with victory at Goodison Park. After fielding a rotated side for the 3-1 win at Fulham at the weekend, Klopp has shuffled his pack again. Alisson is mainstay in goal, and starts behind a back four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson. Alexis Mac Allister is restored to the No. 6 role, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones further forward. In light of Diogo Jota‘s new injury, Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez make up Klopp’s preferred forward line. Despite the absence of Jota and Cody Gakpo, who is believed to be missing due to personal reasons, Liverpool still have a strong bench to call upon. Jason Wilcox has ordered Erik ten Hag to drop transition tactics in favour of possession-based approach Man United News And Transfer News
Jason Wilcox has ordered Erik ten Hag to drop transition tactics in favour of possession-based approach Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United will be expected to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they take on bottom club Sheffield United on Wednesday. But after the calamitous display put in by the team against Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, nothing can be taken for granted with this lot. United fans saw their beloved team relinquish a three-goal lead and almost lost it at the death against a team from the Championship. Conceding late goals has become something of a trademark for Ten Hag’s team this season. New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was in attendance at Wembley and he was accompanied by new technical director Jason Wilcox. Wilcox-EtH working together The former Manchester City academy head has been tasked with conducting an audit into the type of job carried out by the Dutch manager this season. Wilcox and Ten Hag met after the last-four clash and as indicated by the manager during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Blades encounter, further discussions are planned in the coming week. The former Southampton sporting director has been reportedly tasked with figuring out a style of play for the club which will be carried out throughout all age group right up to the first team. And Ten Hag, who shifted from a possession-based style last term to a transition-heavy tactic this season, will have to follow order if he is to stay at the club. According to journalist Alan Nixon, writing on Patreon, Wilcox has asked Ten Hag to drop the ineffective transition style which has not all served the club well this season and adopt a more possession-based style from Wednesday’s game against Chris Wilder’s team. The Sheffield game will be followed by Burnley’s trip to Manchester with Vincent Kompany’s team languishing in 19th place. Despite the injury crisis, showcasing a more proactive style should not be that hard an ask considering the calibre of opponents. New playing style? But for now, players keep treating the ball like a ticking time bomb, afraid of holding on to it and always relinquishing control. Many have wondered as to what exactly goes on in training during the week! But whether Ten Hag, who wanted to make this team the best in transitions, will be ready to drop this style remains to be seen. He was brought in to help the club play like his Ajax team did but he has been adamant that he will not play in that particular way. Under the Glazers, the managers have usually had a lot of power over recruitment matters and when it comes to the style of play. But with a new backroom staff in place, INEOS will begin calling the shots as is the case in most elite clubs. Considering the majority of players at the club, counter-attacking football does not work due to average age of players in the squad and their lack of pace. If the club had tried to sign physically strong and fast players during the two Ten Hag’s seasons, this would still have made sense. But such a drastic change after a successful debut campaign has fans and pundits questioning what exactly Ten Hag has in store. If he fails to prove he can play this way, the report states INEOS will be forced to look elsewhere. Want to be the first to hear breaking Man United news? Revealed | Why DDC star is yet to make Orlando Pirates debut
Orlando Pirates are already planning for the next season, with both incomings and outgoings in focus. Pirates made a number of signings during the off-season, as well as the January transfer window.  They signed  Melusi Buthelezi from TS Galaxy, Siphelo Baloni from All Stars FC and Katlego Otladisa from Marumo Gallants. They were joined by Karim Kimvuidi, Lesedi Kapinga and Patrick Maswanganyi. Then in January, Pirates added the duo of Thabiso Lebitso and Thalenthe Mbatha. In January, stalwart Thembinkosi Lorch and Bienvenu Eva Nga both left the club for Mamelodi Sundowns and Chippa United respectfully.  Those players are expected to be followed out of the exit door by a few more, in the coming window. The likes of Zakhele Lepasa, Souaibou Marou, Sandile Mthethwa, among those touted for an exit. Another name that could enter that list soon is goalkeeper Richard Ofori. The Ghanaian international has been at least third choice for the past two seasons at Pirates.  Matrose tipped to leave on loan Another player who was even expected to leave on loan at the start of this season is Azola Matrose. The young midfielder enjoyed a fruitful loan at Chippa last season, with others expecting him to go on another loan spell. But to the surprise of many, he stayed at Pirates with the promise of fighting for his place.  A serious injury has since ruled Matrose out for the bulk of the season. Having returned, he has since played mainly for the DDC side. A source has since explained why he is yet to make the breakthrough to the Pirates senior side.  Why he hasn’t broken through at Pirares “For next season the club is looking at losing Azola (Matrose). He is still young and they want him to have game time. There are many players in his position at the club at the moment and it’s very hard for him to breakthrough hence they want him to gain experience somewhere and come back a better player. That’s also the other reason why he has spent most of this season playing for the DDC side under Joseph Makhanya and he has been doing very well but they want him to be playing regularly for a team in the DStv Premiership next season and that’s why they are set to loan him out,”. Said the source to Soccer-Laduma.  Pirates and Chippa United could be set for yet another window of player movements, with Matrose just one possible deal.

Give me four years to win Champions League Rulani Mokwena
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena believes he still has four more years to the CAF Champions League. Despite winning the DStv Premiership three times in a row, the 37-year-old is yet to reach a Champions League final. Under Pitso Mosimane, the Brazilians managed to win the title in his fourth year in charge. At the time, Mokwena was his assistant alongside Manqoba Mngqithi. Having lost to Esperance in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, Rulani Mokwena has to inspire his team. A win by two clear goals will see Masandawana reach their first CAF final in eight years. “I have the feeling that we don’t understand the Champions League. I look at the Champions League with a different perspective because I have been here before,” Mokwena said as per Sowetan Live. Rulani Mokwena confident he can win Champions League “I was an assistant coach to the previous coach [Pitso Mosimane] for a very long time and the last coach was here for eight years. He had eight years to try and win the Champions League and we only won the competition once.” Mokwena has extended his stay with Sundowns for another four years, giving him several chances to win the Champions League “Now, what gives us the right to think it’s just going to be a walk in the park and win the competition? We have to work hard for it,” he said. “I got a four-year contract here and all I’m asking for from the Sundowns fans is give me four years to try and win. “I’m not asking for eight. Give me four years to try and win the Champions League. It’s going to happen,” Mokwena added. It’s not going to be easy. It is not going to be a win all the time.” Downs have Esperance to deal with on Friday Fans have often criticised Mokwena for failing to win the Champions League since taking over as head coach. The 37-year-old has never passed the semi-finals and could bow out in the same stage this campaign.

Video: Tyrell Malacia takes huge step in his injury recovery as hes spotted doing individual training work Man United News And Transfer News
1 Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia is seemingly stepping up his rehabilitation as he eyes a return to competitive action as soon as possible. Malacia has not featured for even a single minute this season and it’s believed he will miss the entirety of his sophomore campaign at United with a long-term knee issue. The Netherlands international, who United signed last summer from Eredivisie giants Feyenoord, has not lined up for the club since he had surgery on a knee meniscus injury. He initially picked up the setback during the last day of the 2022/23 Premier League term. The injury also saw Malacia ruled out of the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the United States. His long-term absence raised some questions from a section of supporters, who speculated why the player had not been seen in public during the duration of his recovery. United had provisionally planned for Malacia to return last autumn but they were foiled as his rehabilitation endured problems along the way, meaning he would be sidelined for longer than previously projected. For Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff, the setback suffered by Malacia became even more significant after Luke Shaw, the club’s primary left-back, also picked up a long-term injury. For weeks now, the 20-time English champions have been forced to operate without a natural left-sided full-back. The likes of Victor Lindelof, Sofyan Amrabat and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been deployed on that part of the pitch with both Shaw and Malacia unavailable for selection. Earlier today, supporters received some good news regarding Malacia when footage of the Dutchman surfaced on social media, showing him taking part in individual training work at the gym. In the video, Malacia is seen lifting weights.
