We often dismiss tools that make cooking accessible, calling them lazy or gross. This attitude is everywhere—but it's especially pronounced when it comes to garlic. For @TheWalrus, I wrote about the casual ableism in food culture. Being infantilized as a visibly disabled person is more than just annoying. It can really harm a person’s sense of bodily autonomy and ability to advocate for themselves —because it can feel frivolous if no one treats you like a competent adult. Always assume competence.— ♿️ Alex 🤟🏻 (@DeafOn4Wheels) June 23, 2022

When I developed a nerve problem that made everyday tasks difficult, I rejected tools like pre-minced garlic, worried I couldn't use them while still being a good cook. Today, I'm finally comfortable reaching for the tools I need—but I still hear stuff like this all the time. pic.twitter.com/8nDpH5Ja9C— Garlic Drolet (@gabrielledrolet) June 22, 2022

I've been using a cane to walk for like almost a year now and it's a huge help. When we had to take a plane, I couldn't stand in lineups so I used a wheelchair to get thru the airportIt was like I could actually think while moving for the first time in years. Without pain.— fun facts with lulu (@FunFactsLulu) June 22, 2022

My life is not accessible by wheelchair. But it really opened my eyes to how much energy I'm expending by being in pain and still making myself walk. I don't know what to do about this, but I noticed it.— fun facts with lulu (@FunFactsLulu) June 22, 2022

Should have tagged #NEISvoid here but I'm still processing how much less pain I was in maneuvering in the chair than I am while walking without anything or with the cane. Hard to process because of internalized minimizing of injury the doctors have tried to imbue me with— fun facts with lulu (@FunFactsLulu) June 22, 2022

Today is significant in the disability community. It’s the 23rd anniversary of the Olmstead decision, which makes forced institutionalization illegal. It’s also the 20th anniversary of Justin Dart’s, Godfather of the ADA & @AAPD’s co-founder, passing. #OlmsteadAt23 1/4— Maria Town (@maria_m_town) June 23, 2022

I was thrilled (yes, truly thrilled) to visit the Dart conference room at the @FordFoundation last week. Other conference rooms bear the names Huerta, Mankiller, & Mandela. It was awesome to see Justin’s work contextualized within broader global social justice efforts. 2/4 pic.twitter.com/Gnmdh8Ohdk— Maria Town (@maria_m_town) June 23, 2022

"This interest model of mind is ecological, embodied, and exploratory. The Olmstead Decision wouldn’t exist without the presence of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Similarly, the Olmstead Decision gave the ADA teeth in a big way.
