I’m a survivor of the Troubled Teen Industry. I’ve never posted about this in depth before, but I’m tired of staying quiet about it and i’m really angry. A program that promised me relief from therapy left me with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and a sleep disorder.— austin (@Rcheeey) May 24, 2022

Autistic people have a reputation for being rigid, but it’s NT society that enforces strict rules, conventions and traditions. Meanwhile, autistic people are recognising and preaching the fluidity and/or flexibility of things like sexuality, gender, time, love, career and more.— Callum Stephen (He/Him) (@AutisticCallum_) May 24, 2022

allistics tend to have this problem where they think asking questions = pointing fingers. instead of answering the question, they get defensive and yell at you like you insulted them instead. it’s so confusing 😫 why must they do this!!!— my autistic/neurodivergent adventures (@MyNDAdventures) May 25, 2022

Stop promoting the idea that Autistic kids/people aren't 'listening'. The brain and communication is so complex, and there are so many ways to receive, process and express information. YOUR way isn't necessarily the 'right' way.— Brandi Thompson (@awesomebrandi) May 25, 2022

Instead of recognising my autism, the system stuck labels on me which were hurtful. Like being told I was ‘dramatic’, ‘sensitive’, ‘hysterical’, and mis-diagnosing me with a personality disorder. It meant my difficulties being viewed through inappropriate lenses.— Emily♡ (@ItsEmilyKaty) May 25, 2022

The main problem with masking (such as faking eye contact) is the fact it's never about us.It's about making others (usually neurotypicals) more comfortable at our expense. No one seems to care if *we* are uncomfortable but we must always protect the feelings of others.— Hassaan Mohammad (@hassaan97) May 25, 2022

Yet another literary festival where a white person says that:I’m "giving voice to the voiceless.”I corrected with:"The voices are there & are dynamic, they just were not centered. They were omitted or not given resources to flourish..."People shifted in their seats.— brownroundboi (@brownroundboi) May 22, 2022

I've always found it ironic that as a disabled person u have to:1) Prove u're disabled enough to obtain services or accommodations 2) Prove u're not too disabled if u want to work, participate generally in ur community, or maintain any legal right to make ur own decisions— See Mia Spring 🌸 (@SeeMiaRoll) May 23, 2022

My high-support autistic son is wrestling with adaptive skills all day long even when he’s happy and content. Am I going to tell you the specifics? No. Some of my best friends don’t even know, because he deserves the same privacy and respect as any other adult. #Neurodiversity— Shannon Des Roches Rosa (@shannonrosa) May 23, 2022

Every issue in our news cycle today - gender affirming care, access to abortions, COVID-19 policies (or rather lack thereof), and racist hate crimes - are intimately tied to the history of the eugenics movement. These are intertwined stories. A 🧵1/20— Nicole Lee Schroeder, PhD (@Nicole_Lee_Sch) May 21, 2022

The system of eugenics and its resulting platform is inherently racist, sexist, transphobic, ableist, etc. at its core. It's designed to protect systems of white, cis male privilege, while entrenching systems of oppression into place. And it has a long history. 2/20— Nicole Lee Schroeder, PhD (@Nicole_Lee_Sch) May 21, 2022

The platform emerged in the late 1800s, sparked by Darwin's publication in 1859 of Origin of Species. Darwin's cousin, Sir Francis Galton, took the idea of natural selection from OoS and tried to apply it to the human population. Could we breed "ideal" humans he asked. 3/20— Nicole Lee Schroeder, PhD (@Nicole_Lee_Sch) May 21, 2022

All of these policies were connected by the concept of Social Darwinism, which claims that people are responsible for their own misfortunes, and that systems of oppression do not exist. Social Darwinism argues that if you're poor, powerless, etc. it's your fault alone. 7/20— Nicole Lee Schroeder, PhD (@Nicole_Lee_Sch) May 21, 2022

I would love if, when folks advocate for the availability of plain language versions of text, they avoided arguments like "if you can't express your ideas with simple language you don't know them well enough." Some ND brains need language plain. Some need it baroque.— Alex Haagaard (they/them) (@alexhaagaard) May 21, 2022
