"A common weakness among behavior analysts is their resistance in seeking outside perspectives" "behavior analysts sometimes become aversive to other professionals"? https://t.co/fPP487L58J and they've imposed rock-bottom standards of science & ethics on autistics, for decades— Michelle Dawson (@autismcrisis) May 1, 2023

I believe that most autism professionals don't know why nonspeaking autistic people don't speak. They're also not making an effort to learn why. That means most of them don't provide therapies that help nonspeakers to communicate.Yet they make money off nonspeakers' plight.— Tania Melnyczuk (@ekverstania) May 1, 2023

I wouldn’t say it has the problem, since a locution is a choice of words rather than a corpus and grammar. But I’m a highly eccentric folklinguist at best and biased against Christianity tbf— Return of the Account 🌉#SaveA11yBots (@politiquestions) May 2, 2023

I updated our piece to add a note on the history of "love languages" and to use locutions instead to preserve the alliteration. But, does locutions have the same problem as languages? We'll update the header image once we decide on an alternative.https://t.co/rAQKpIUCcG— Stimpunks Foundation (@stimpunks) May 2, 2023

Anyway for me the word languages was used precisely for its normalizing and minimizing power, not to individualize; if you have “a language” and a guy “just doesn’t speak it” but then he takes a class and says ¿Donde está la biblioteca? you are obliged to recognize he speaks it— Return of the Account 🌉#SaveA11yBots (@politiquestions) May 2, 2023

The baggage is its reason for being! But I’m perhaps veering into pedantry. I like all of these alternatives though. They might all have slightly distinct usages in the same piece, even— Return of the Account 🌉#SaveA11yBots (@politiquestions) May 2, 2023

To me the language metaphor was actually the weakest part but that may just be a matter of taste, or certain experiences with linguistics departments. I also get it mixed up with location in this one context because it’s like, where does your heart live and what did it say— Return of the Account 🌉#SaveA11yBots (@politiquestions) May 2, 2023

@autisticrealms @politiquestions Love locutions? locution: a word or phrase, especially with regard to style or idiom. • a person's style of speech That meaning kinda captures the neurodivergence/difference aspect.

@autisticrealms @politiquestions We try to frame in terms of relationship accommodations & emotional bids in our piece, but those don’t quite capture what “love languages” says. It’s a good phrase ruined by baggage. Maybe keep love but swap out languages: - love expressions - love articulations - love dialects

@politiquestions @autisticrealms True. The phrase has become so broadly used beyond those origins that we've given in and try to claim it for healthy uses. Don't know if that's the right approach, but it has so much currency.

I am a stutterer. I am very (maybe too 😆) comfortable with my voice right now. Many things have contributed to this peace - cold calling did not.In fact, a teacher lost just about all of the capital they’d earned with me when they did it. Months of work undone in 5 seconds. https://t.co/l7Y7cTUly1— Matthew R. Kay (@MattRKay) April 30, 2023

I’m very worried that a lot of the worst of education practices—draconian late penalties, zero tolerance deadlines, weaponizing grades, etc.—are what many teachers see as “the solution” in this moment. We can’t go backward to meet this moment for students. https://t.co/JGKenehU7N— Marcus Luther (@MarcusLuther6) May 2, 2023

Linguists have a tendency to use the languaging of autistic people to decide what is human and what is not human. Autistic people are "not human" and allistic people are "human". This is also evident in Iris Berent's recent work on autism and "dualism"— Jon Henner (@jmhenner) May 1, 2023

Hence, my issue with describing Autistic language as "language disorder". I don't use that term. Similarly, "social communication disorder" also irrelevant. See why 👇 https://t.co/sXleQCIzpn— Elaine Mcgreevy (@ElaineMcgreevy) May 1, 2023
