Dominican Republic Signs Agreement with the World Bank to Curb Carbon Emissions and Reduce Deforestation
The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources signed a landmark agreement today with the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).
Businesses Have ‘Gone Quiet’ After Voluntary Carbon Market Revelations
Transparency is the key to bolstering carbon credit markets —giving companies greater insight into what rainforests are saved and how carbon credits get awarded.
Beet pulp: the key to the EU sugar industry’s decarbonisation
Fit For 55, the EU’s package of energy- and climate-related legislative proposals, sets an EU-wide target of -55% GHG reductions by 2030. The roll-out of renewables will be crucial in meeting these targets, including in the EU sugar sector. But to decarbonise we need a revised Renewable Energy Directive that helps, rather than hinders, the use of residual beet pulp as an energy solution.

German farmers, industry decry neglect of biogas amid gas shortages
Bioenergy and German farmers' associations have criticised the country's renewable energy act (EEG) amendment passed in the Bundestag on Thursday (7 July) on the grounds that it does not provide sufficient support for biogas.

REDD+ Country Profiles Indicators - CIFOR Knowledge
The purpose of the country profile is to provide an overview of the contextual conditions that affect the REDD+ policy environment in a specific country, along with a preliminary 3E (effective, efficient and equitable) assessment of the REDD+ proposals for that country. The profile is compiled based on reviews of existing literature, national and international data and reviews of legislation and policies, as well as selected expert interviews. As such, it provides the background and the preliminary analysis of the context in which national REDD+ strategies are being developed. To help structure the country profile and aid the assessment of the 3E as well as to allow comparison among countries and periods from period to period, each section is linked to a set of indicators. Indicators cover the basic description, forest governance and its issues, decentralization and links to deforestation and forest degradation and levels of equity as related to indigenous rights to carbon, land and trees. In final two sets help describe the political economy and REDD policy environment covering actors, policy events, incentives and governance.
Carbon Pricing Explained: How Carbon Credits, Carbon Offsets and Taxes are Priced
Between talk of carbon credits, carbon offsets, and of course carbon emissions, it can feel like carbon is everywhere. But unless you understand carbon pricing, you’ll never understand how – and why – carbon markets work the way they do. Let’s break down carbon pricing, starting with a simple question: why put a price on […]

Ethanol from sugar beet in The Netherlands: energy production and efficiency
Prospects for ethanol production from sugar beet in The Netherlands have been analysed using measured production data from two experimental farms and literature on beet to ethanol conversion. The analyses include beet cultivation and harvesting, transport to the factory, conversion into ethanol and delivery of the ethanol to distribution points. Under the prevailing conditions, ethanol production from sugar beet shows to be reasonably energy efficient. A net energy production has been calculated of 32 and 37 GJ/ha. Crop and ethanol yields are above those reported elsewhere, as is the energy use per hectare which is related to crop yield. Applying alternative energy generating technology at the ethanol factory suggests that considerable energy gains can be realised. Another source of variation is the allocation ratio of energy to ethanol and by-products. The calculations suggest that the prospects for ethanol production from sugar beet in Europe can be considerable, if energy inputs can be reduced, by using crop residues.
