Fate of ingested fluids: factors affecting gastric emptying and intestinal absorption of beverages in humans | Nutrition Reviews | Oxford Academic
Abstract. The volume of fluid ingested for rehydration is essential in determining the restoration of euhydration because it must be in excess of the water
expired breath
mainly in urine
total body water content
the duration of fluid retention
maintenance of the stimulus to drink
electrolyte and substrate deficits
occurs for pleasure or from habit,
water content to enter the body water pool following ingestion
inclusion of electrolytes in rehydration beverages promotes retention of the fluid ingested
individuals consume prescribed volumes
150% of their sweat loss)
restoration of euhydration is prolonged compared with that which occurs when low-salt beverages are consumed
involved in the homeostatic control of body water
many of the sensory signals and mechanisms that control water intake also influence sodium intake
Ingested fluids are not immediately available for assimilation into the body.
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are a class of medications utilized to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. As a class of medications, they are among several pharmacological options for these endocrine diseases. The function of GLP-1 agonists is to lower serum glucose levels and thereby manage metabolism in affected patients. Participating clinicians gain an enhanced understanding of when to prescribe these agonists, consider specific patient populations, and seek consultations with specialists in the care of their patients. Recent recommendations regarding mixed formulations are also included in alignment with current research on this drug class. This activity will highlight the indications, mechanism of action, administration, adverse effect profile, and contraindications for these drugs. An interprofessional team of nurses, primary care clinicians, pharmacists, and endocrinologists remains pertinent to care for patients prescribed this class of medications.
Incretins are hormones released by nutrients from the GI tract. They amplify glucose-induced insulin release. By raising circulating incretin levels, oral glucose provokes a higher insulin response than that resulting from intravenous glucose. The two most important incretin hormones are glucose-dep …
