Bank Of America’s Survey Of Wealthy Americans: Younger People Are 7.5 Times More Likely To Hold Crypto In Their Portfolios – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/bank-of-americas-survey-of-wealthy-americans-younger-people-are-7-5-times-more-likely-to-hold-crypto-in-their-portfolios-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Bank of America has found that younger wealthy Americans are 7.5 times more likely to hold crypto in their portfolios than investors aged 43 and older. “If the youngest cohort isn’t confident in stocks, where do they see opportunities for investment growth? Alternatives, including cryptocurrencies, which are their No. 1 choice,” the bank wrote. Young Wealthy Americans Prefer Cryptocurrencies to Stocks Bank of America released its 2022 Private Bank Study of Wealthy Americans this week. The report highlights the results of an online survey, conducted from May to June, of 1,052 people who were over the age of 21 with household investable assets of more than $3 million. The bank noted that the respondents are a nationally representative sample of the U.S. high-net-worth population and not necessarily clients of Bank of America. “Conventional investment advice suggests that younger investors hold more stocks, not fewer, than older investors. Yet the 21 to 42 age group holds just a quarter of their portfolio in stocks, compared with 55% of investors aged 43 and older,” the report details, noting: If the youngest cohort isn’t confident in stocks, where do they see opportunities for investment growth? Alternatives, including cryptocurrencies, which are their No. 1 choice. “While 29% of younger people said crypto presents a leading opportunity to create wealth, only 7% of the older group agreed. The younger group is generally more interested in private equity or debt, as well as sustainable or environmental, social and governance (ESG)-related investments,” the report adds. Bank of America emphasized that age is “the dominant factor when it comes to interest in cryptocurrencies,” elaborating: While overall usage is low, younger people are 7.5 times more likely to hold crypto in their portfolios and five times more likely to say they understand it quite well. Furthermore, the survey found that “Half of the younger group said they turn to social media for guidance on crypto, compared with 30% of the older group.” What do you think about the findings by Bank of America? Odelyn Joseph/AP hide caption toggle caption Odelyn Joseph/AP Protesters calling for the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry run after police fired tear gas to disperse them in the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Monday, Oct. 10, 2022. Odelyn Joseph/AP SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. and Canada sent armored vehicles and other supplies to Haiti on Saturday to help police fight a powerful gang amid a pending request from the Haitian government for the immediate deployment of foreign troops. A U.S. State Department statement said the equipment was bought by Haiti’s government, but it did not provide further details on the supplies flown on military aircraft to the capital of Port-au-Prince. A spokesman for the U.S. military’s Southern Command said he could not provide further details on the supplies sent, though he added it was a joint operation involving the U.S. Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force. “This equipment will assist (Haiti’s National Police) in their fight against criminal actors who are fomenting violence and disrupting the flow of critically-needed humanitarian assistance, hindering efforts to halt the spread of cholera,” the State Department said. The Pan American Health Organization said there are more than 560 suspected cases of cholera, some 300 hospitalizations and at least 35 deaths, with experts warning the numbers are likely much higher than what i’s being reported. The equipment arrived more than a month after one of Haiti’s most powerful gangs surrounded a fuel terminal and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Demonstrators also have blocked roads in major cities to protest a sharp rise in fuel prices after Henry announced in early September that his administration could no longer afford to subsidize fuel. Since then, gas stations have closed, hospitals have cut back on services and banks and grocery stores open on a limited basis as fuel, water and other supplies dwindle across Haiti. The owners of the fuel terminal announced Saturday that armed men had attacked their installations for a second time and fled with more than 28,000 gallons of petroleum products after overpowering surveillance and emergency personnel at the facility. It was the second time this week that armed men broke into the terminal, which stores more than 10 million gallons of gasoline and diesel and more than 800,000 gallons of kerosene.

SpaceX Capsule Splashes Down, Returning 4 Astronauts From Space Station – The Indian Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/spacex-capsule-splashes-down-returning-4-astronauts-from-space-station-the-indian-express/ The fourth long-duration astronaut team launched by SpaceX to the International Space Station (ISS) safely returned to Earth on Friday, splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida after nearly six months of research aboard the orbital outpost. The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule dubbed Freedom, carrying three U.S. NASA astronauts and an Italian crewmate from the European Space Agency, parachuted into the sea at the conclusion of a five-hour autonomous flight home from the ISS. Splashdown under clear skies, at about 4:55 p.m. EDT (2055 GMT), was carried live by a joint NASA-SpaceX webcast. Freedom began its stay in orbit on April 27. The crew consisted of NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren, 49, fellow Americans Jessica Watkins, 34, and Bob Hines, 47, as well as Italy’s Samantha Cristoforetti, 45, who was commander of their ISS expedition. Watkins became the first African-American woman to join a long-duration ISS mission. In less than an hour, recovery teams had hoisted the heat-scorched Crew Dragon onto a retrieval vessel before opening the capsule’s side hatch and helping the four astronauts out by one for their first breath of fresh air in more than 24 weeks. Still garbed in their helmeted white-and-black spacesuits, their strength and balance left shaky from 170 days of weightlessness, the four crew were assisted onto special gurneys as they waved and gave thumbs-up for cameras. Among those greeting them on the deck of the ship was the vessel’s namesake, veteran NASA astronaut Megan McArthur. Each of the returning astronauts was to receive a routine medical checkup aboard the ship before being flown by helicopter back to Florida. SCORCHING RE-ENTRY, THEN PARACHUTES The return from orbit followed a fiery re-entry plunge through Earth’s atmosphere generating frictional heat that sent temperatures outside the capsule soaring to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,930 degrees Celsius). Two sets of parachutes billowed open above the capsule in the final stage of descent, slowing its fall to about 15 miles per hour (24 kph) before the craft hit the water off Jacksonville, Florida. During their space station stay, the crew orbited Earth 2,720 times – about once every 90 minutes – to log some 72 million miles (116 million km) in space, according to NASA. The team was designated “Crew-4,” the fourth full-fledged long-duration group of astronauts launched to ISS by SpaceX since the private rocket company founded by Tesla Inc CEO Elton Musk began flying NASA personnel in May 2020. As for most ISS crews, their primary mission was science-based, encompassing scores of experiments and technology demonstrations. Highlights included research on microgravity-induced changes in human cells resembling those associated with aging, and documenting effects of dietary improvements in orbit on immune function, gastrointestinal health and nutrition indicators. They also participated in studies of fire and fuel behavior in weightlessness, and cultivation of plants in liquid- and air-based growth materials in place of soil. Their exit came a week after their replacement team, Crew-5, arrived aboard the station – a Russian cosmonaut, a Japanese astronaut and two NASA crewmates, including the first Native American woman in orbit. Crew-5 is remaining on ISS with two other Russians and a third American who shared a Soyuz flight to the ISS in September. One of those cosmonauts, Serge Prokofiev, assumed ISS command from Cristoforetti before Crew-4’s departure. ISS, spanning the length of a U.S. football field, has been continuously occupied since 2000, operated by a U.S.-Russian-led partnership that includes Canada, Japan and 11 European countries.

Photo: Amazon It’s not easy finding a bag that checks every box on a traveler’s wish list: spacious, stylish, and comfortable to carry. Usually, you end up settling for two out of three. But that’s exactly why shoppers can’t stop raving about this vintage leather tote by S-ZONE: It checks all three boxes — and it’s on sale for 20 percent off at Amazon right now thanks to an on-site coupon, bringing its price tag to just $42 for select colors (psst, the gorgeous dark brown version is currently the best deal). The soft leather construction, reinforced buckles, and sturdy stitching all make for a durable bag that can stand up to the wear and tear of travel or everyday use. The spacious main compartment can fit a 13-inch laptop and still have room leftover to accommodate all of your other gadgets and essentials, according to travelers. Plus, it also doubles as a very stylish everyday bag. “I bought it mainly for airline travel and it fit everything!” raved a buyer. “Headphones, extra socks, phone, makeup case, passport holder, wallet and even zipped up.“ A customer that took a four-day vacation to Disney World added, “This bag fit my normal purse items: phone, wallet, sunglasses, keys; and also fit five water bottles, masks, souvenirs, snacks, and everything else that I ended up carrying during the trip.”  Amazon To buy: amazon.com, $42 (originally $62) In addition to the two zippered interior pockets and the extra zippered exterior pocket, there’s also a zipper that runs along the top of the bag so you can secure everything inside with ease. You can race to your gate without worrying about your things falling out and theft in crowded locations. “It’s my go-to bag for work travel, since it fits both a laptop (and has a compartment for a cable) and can be zippered closed for safety and protection,” another reviewer said.  As far as comfort goes, the spacious tote is still surprisingly lightweight, weighing in at about 1.5 pounds by itself. The adjustable straps allow you to switch from carrying it as a handbag to slinging it over your shoulder. When it’s on your shoulder, the flat straps will stay in place and will not slide down so you won’t have to keep adjusting them as you maneuver through the airport terminal or during your daily commute to the office.  Amazon To buy: amazon.com, $50 Finally, you get all that space and comfort in a surprisingly sophisticated design, boasting the elegant look of genuine leather and a classic style that makes it feel and look much more expensive than it is. “The look and feel of it says designer!” One shopper shared. “I didn’t want to splurge or designer because I intended to use it as a diaper bag. It works perfectly!” Marked down to just $50, this is one of the best deals you’ll find for a genuine leather tote. Tomorrows Top 25 Today: Should Tennessee Jump Georgia Ohio State To No. 1 In New College Football Rankings? CBS Sports
Tomorrows Top 25 Today: Should Tennessee Jump Georgia Ohio State To No. 1 In New College Football Rankings? CBS Sports
Tomorrow’s Top 25 Today: Should Tennessee Jump Georgia, Ohio State To No. 1 In New College Football Rankings? – CBS Sports https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/tomorrows-top-25-today-should-tennessee-jump-georgia-ohio-state-to-no-1-in-new-college-football-rankings-cbs-sports/ The college football rankings are going to see a shake up when the new AP Top 25 poll is updated Sunday following an epic Week 7 where the scores and results somehow lived up to the sky-high expectations going into Separation Saturday. Eight ranked teams took losses in Week 7, but that’s mostly a result of a slate that featured seven games between ranked opponents. Three of those games had teams that were undefeated heading into the weekend, and while all three results will have an impact on the new rankings, none resonated across the sports world quite like Tennessee’s 52-49 win over Alabama.  The victory brought all kinds of history into play, including Tennessee snapping a 15-game series losing streak to win for the first time against a Nick Saban-coached Alabama team. It was also the most points allowed by the Crimson Tide in any game since 1907. All of it creates an interesting question for voters: Should the Vols, who now sit at 6-0 behind arguably the best offense in the entire country, receive consideration for the No. 1 spot?  What Tennessee has undeniably showed is the most impressive win of any team that is still undefeated. Alabama lost but in no way did Bryce Young (shoulder), back in action for the first time since getting knocked out of the game against Arkansas two weeks ago, and the rest of the Tide appear unworthy of their own top-five status. The teams traded haymakers in one of college football‘s modern epics, and that win for the Vols is stronger than anything on the profile for any of the other teams in the running for No. 1.  What’s debatable is the value of a “ranked win” when taking into consideration the difference between teams ranked at the time of particular games and the current rankings. Tennessee’s four wins against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 at the time of games are the most the in the country, but of those four, only one (Alabama) is against a team that is expected to be in the poll on Sunday. The wins against Pittsburgh, Florida and LSU still hold value as all three have winning records, but even at the time, all three were ranked outside the top 15. If a voter wants to critique the value of those “ranked wins” when splitting hairs among undefeated teams, there is a counter to one of the Vols’ strongest resume arguments.  Ultimately, we do think Tennessee will receive first-place votes in the new college football rankings. The issue with how high the Vols can move lies mostly with considering the motivations and thoughts of the voters who had already awarded Georgia and Ohio State first-place votes in last week’s balloting. It can be assumed that some, if not most, of the 11 voters who had Alabama at No. 1 last week will move those votes to Tennessee or Georgia; the Bulldogs thumped Vanderbilt, 55-0. How many of the 32 voters who had Georgia at No. 1 will be swayed to move the reigning national champions down a spot in wake of Tennessee’s win, and how many of the 20 voters who had Ohio State at No. 1 will make a similar move while the Buckeyes were off this week?  If Georgia had struggled with its Week 7 opponent, and if Ohio State had been in action and done the same, then the door could have been open for a surge to the very top. Instead, the debate will begin with first-place votes and linger into the week among fans across the country. It’s a fascinating twist in the 2022 season and potentially just a preview of the shake ups to come with more games between ranked teams on the schedule in weeks ahead.  Here’s how we think the new AP Top 25 will look on Sunday:  1. Georgia (Last week — 1): It is highly unlikely that a majority of the voters who thought Georgia was the best team in the country last week will look at the results from Week 7 and think that a 55-0 win against Vanderbilt was not good enough for the Bulldogs to maintain their position.  2. Ohio State (2): The Buckeyes were off in Week 7 and will be back in action next week against Iowa.  3. Tennessee (6): As mentioned earlier, there’s a strong argument for Tennessee to be in consideration for the No. 1 spot. We think there will be first-place votes awarded to the Vols, just not enough to jump ahead of the Buckeyes, who collected more than 30% of the first-place votes last week.  4. Michigan (5): We’re projecting a return to the No. 4 spot after the Wolverines dominated in one three spotlight games between undefeated teams. The 41-17 win against Penn State rejuvenated voter confidence that had been slipping in recent weeks, cementing Michigan’s spot as the top challenger to Ohio State in the Big Ten.  5. Clemson (4): The Tigers put together a strong performance in a complete victory over Florida State, closing our their ACC road slate with a 34-28 win.  6. TCU (13): The Horned Frogs have beaten three consecutive ranked opponents for the first time in school history after storming back from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit to win in double overtime against previously undefeated Oklahoma State. Now 6-0 and 3-0 in league play, TCU can start beating the drum for more respect from the voters and a place in the CFP conversation.  7. Alabama (3): If there is going to be a surge of momentum behind Tennessee, there has to be a high floor for the Tide when it comes to their drop in the rankings. A late missed field goal was one of several moments where Alabama nearly escaped Rocky Top with a comeback win, and those thin margins will be recognized by the voters.  8. Ole Miss (9): The voters won’t penalize Ole Miss for allowing a reeling Auburn team to hang around in what turned out to be a more interesting early slate game than many expected. But the win, which did end up coming by 14 points after a weather delay, was not emphatic enough to enter the Rebels into the debate for a top-five spot.  9. UCLA (11): The Bruins were off in Week 7 and will be back in action next week against Oregon.  10. Oregon (12): The Ducks were off in Week 7 and will be back in action next week against UCLA.   11. Oklahoma State (8): A blown lead on the road in conference play is not uncommon, but it still stings when you consider what the ceiling of this team could have been with a head-to-head win against another Big 12 title contender. Oklahoma State is good enough to earn a rematch with TCU in the Big 12 Championship Game, but now the margins to make that game are even smaller with one conference loss on the books and six Big 12 games left on the schedule.  12. Penn State (10): Wins at Purdue and at Auburn are the best marks on the profile, which isn’t particularly strong. The eye test helps Penn State because, while the Nittany Lions were clearly outmatched on Saturday, the pieces are clearly there for this to be one of the better teams in the country.   13. USC (7): Losing 43-42 as a road underdog to ranked Utah is not going to come with too much adjustment in the poll, but there will be a drop for the Trojans. 14. Utah (20): The Utes will be ahead of USC on many ballots because of the head-to-head advantage, but having two losses will remain a factor that prevents a jump up into the top 10. 15. Wake Forest (14): The Demon Deacons were off in Week 7 and will be back in action next week against Boston College.  16. Syracuse (18): The Dome was electric and impactful on the result as Syracuse seized on the opportunity to snag a high-profile win against a Devin Leary-less NC State, beating the Wolfpack 24-9 to improve to 6-0. Bowl eligible for the first time since 2018, Syracuse now turns its attention to ACC title contention with a showdown against Clemson next week in Death Valley.   17. Kansas State (17): The Wildcats were off in Week 7 and will be back in action next week at TCU.  18. Illinois (24): Off to their best start since 2011 after a 26-14 win against Minnesota, the Illini have now moved into the driver’s seat in the Big Ten West race.  19. Cincinnati (21): The Bearcats were off in Week 7 and will be back in action next week at SMU.  20. Kentucky (22): Some knocks to Will Levis and his status moving forward will be the headline, but the fact that Kentucky’s defense rose to the occasion against a strong Mississippi State offense in a 27-17 win should be encouraging for Wildcats fans hoping for a successful finish to the 2022 campaign.  21. Texas (22): A week of “Can Texas make the College Football Playoff with two losses?” hype was cooled quickly by an upset-minded Iowa State squad, but a 24-21 win keeps the Longhorns in the Big 12 title race — and that’s the more realistic goal for 2022.  22. North Carolina (NR): Though ranked in the Coaches Poll last week, the Tar Heels were the first team outside the AP Top 25. After coming from behind to beat Duke and improve to 6-1, look for North Carolina to make its appearance in the AP Top 25 in 13 months.  23. Mississippi State (16): Though the Bulldogs lost on the road as favorites against Kentucky, the voters will find themselves with a lack of obvious options to slot ahead of their 5-2 profile for the final spots on a ballot.  24. Tulane (NR): The Green Wave improved to 6-1 with a two-touchdown road win against South Florida, and thanks to a handful of teams taking losses ahead of them in last week’s balloting, there should be room for a move into the top  25. Purdue (NR): Now 4-2 after beating Nebraska, the Boilermakers could get even more attention. The argument for Purdue’s resume comes down the classic discussion of a “good loss” as its only two defeats have come to other ranked teams (one-loss Penn State, undefeated Syracuse) and both losses have been by four points or less.  Projected to drop out: No. 15 NC State, No. 19 Kansas, No. 25 James Madison

Former Morgan Stanley CEO: Crypto Could Become ‘a Huge Way’ That Monetary Transactions Take Place – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/former-morgan-stanley-ceo-crypto-could-become-a-huge-way-that-monetary-transactions-take-place-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack has confirmed that he still owns bitcoin. While admitting that it is hard for him to understand why crypto has value, the former executive believes that 50 years from now, crypto could be “a huge way that monetary transactions take place.” Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack on Bitcoin and Crypto Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack talked about bitcoin and cryptocurrency in an interview with CNBC Thursday. Mack was the CEO of the global investment bank from June 2005 to January 2010. Responding to a question about whether he currently owns bitcoin, he confirmed: “I do. Yes.” He further shared: Through my family office, we have some outright positions in crypto. The former Morgan Stanley executive also discussed whether Wall Street will become completely digitized in the future. “I don’t think it goes away but I think it changes dramatically,” he said. “Take crypto, it’s hard for me to understand why it has value,” Mack continued, adding: Fifty years from now maybe that will be a huge way that monetary transactions take place. It’s easy to wire. You don’t have to worry about putting in a bank. It’s on a computer. The former Morgan Stanley executive opined: “You gotta make sure it’s insulated, protected, and no one can break into it. Fifty years from now, I think things will be even more electronic and driven more and more by input from humans in the computers on how to trade, how to take risks, and make sure they don’t go over their limits.” Mack has been investing in crypto for many years. In July 2017, he told Bloomberg while discussing his investment in crypto startup Omega One: “I have been watching and investing in the cryptocurrency market over the last several years.” Regarding Omega One, he said at the time that he finds the company “to be an important next step in the emergence of this new economy … making crypto assets cheaper and easier to access.” What do you think about the comments by former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack? The Last Of Us Fan Shares Gorgeous Astronaut Ellie Tattoo – GameRant https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-last-of-us-fan-shares-gorgeous-astronaut-ellie-tattoo-gamerant/ A fan of The Last of Us shares their beautiful tattoo of Ellie wearing an astronaut helmet inspired by a touching moment from The Last of Us 2. A fan of The Last of Us shared a gorgeous astronaut Ellie tattoo. Ellie’s infatuation with the world prior to the infection represents one of the more wholesome characteristics of The Last of Us, which includes her love of outer space. The Last of Us has inspired all kinds of fan creations, such as a life-like Clicker mask from one fan, and illustrations that celebrate moments from the game’s story. Even so, nothing is as permanent as a tattoo to showcase one’s adoration, especially one that is as breathtaking as this one. Fans getting tattoos inspired by this series is not new, such as an incredible The Last of Us Clicker tattoo, or one that pays homage to the giraffe scene. This specific tattoo is more like the latter, in the sense that it reflects the wholesome elements of the series and characters in a way that fans can appreciate. Crossikki shared a photo of their Last of Us tattoo of Ellie wearing an astronaut helmet on Reddit. The tattoo is in a black and white minimalist illustrative style, shaded with stippling to highlight details like Ellie’s backpack and wrinkles in her jeans. Fans can also spot a Firefly symbol on Ellie’s astronaut helmet, which can be interpreted in different ways considering Ellie’s relationship with the Fireflies in the first and second games. The great thing about tattoos like this one is that they’re mostly only recognizable to the fan-base. Because of that, it is presented as both a meaningful moment to connect players to the game and a breathtaking piece of art that newcomers can enjoy, and potentially even entice them to play. Ellie herself sports a tattoo in The Last of Us 2 that could inspire players in the same way, and the Last of Us tattoo was used for a PS5. In The Last of Us 2, there is a flashback chapter of Joel leading Ellie to an abandoned museum on her birthday, showcasing Ellie’s excitement and child-like innocence when interacting with different exhibits on dinosaurs, history, and space. The tattoo is inspired by a specific moment where Joel surprises Ellie with a replica spaceship, an astronaut helmet, and a cassette tape that Ellie used to imagine herself as an astronaut taking off for space. This iconic moment has inspired not only tattoos but also beautiful The Last of Us illustrations that reflect what is so great about the seriES, and why it has touched so many. The Last of Us Part 1 is available on PS5 and coming to PC. MORE: What God of War Can Learn From The Last of Us’ Character Swapping

A Rise In Federal Cases Prompts U.S. Attorney’s Office To Open A Staffed Branch In Tri-Cities – Dailyfly https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/a-rise-in-federal-cases-prompts-u-s-attorneys-office-to-open-a-staffed-branch-in-tri-cities-dailyfly/ RICHLAND, Wa. – Vanessa R. Waldref, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, announced Friday that a fully-staffed branch of the United States Attorney’s Office will be opening in Richland, Washington. At a press event, U.S. Attorney Waldref stated, “The number of cases prosecuted by the Richland Division of my office has risen significantly over the last two decades. As the number of cases continued to grow, it became clear that we need dedicated Assistant United States Attorneys, who live and work in the Tri-Cities area, to support our federal, state, and local partners and ensure that criminal defendants who commit federal crimes are prosecuted to the fullest extent.”  After learning that the U.S. Attorney’s Office would be opening a staffed Richland Office, Senior United States District Court Judge Edward F. Shea stated, “I am pleased to join in celebrating the expansion of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Richland. This expansion will strengthen the ongoing Federal-Local law enforcement efforts in Southeastern Washington for the benefit of all who live here.” The Richland Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office is in the Richland Courthouse and Federal Building, which is located at 825 Jadwin Avenue in Richland, Washington.  Since 2019, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has prosecuted an average of approximately 70 cases each year arising in the Richland Division. While the U.S. Attorney’s Office has continued to prosecute a large volume of cases in Richland, the federal prosecutors handling these cases have been traveling from Spokane and Yakima to appear for hearings in Richland’s federal courthouse.  The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington represents the United States in federal litigation, both criminal and civil, in the twenty Washington counties east of the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The Eastern District is home to approximately 1.5 million people, of which approximately 400,000 live in the Tri-Cities metropolitan area. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is responsible for enforcing federal criminal, civil, administrative, and tax laws. The Office works closely with federal, state, and local partners with one primary purpose:  To ensure that justice is done in each individual case. The Richland Office, when it is fully staffed, is expected to have two fulltime Assistant United States Attorneys and one legal assistant. “Many of the most significant federal cases and crimes we prosecute involve conduct in the Tri-Cities area,” said U.S. Attorney Waldref.  She continued, “When I became the United States Attorney a little over a year ago, one of my top priorities was to build upon the work that the Department of Justice has been doing in the Tri-Cities. Today’s announcement is a realization of our goal to ensure the United States Attorney’s Office has a permanent and staffed presence serving Benton, Franklin, and Walla Walla Counties. We are fortunate to already have Special Assistant United States Attorney Laurel J. Holland, who has prosecuted state and federal cases in the Tri-Cities area since 2009.  In the coming months, we anticipate that two additional AUSAs will be joining SAUSA Holland in our Richland Office to pursue justice on behalf of the Tri-Cities area and throughout all of Eastern Washington.” The following are some of the significant recent federal cases prosecuted out of the Tri-Cities area: Ayoola Taiwo Adeoti, 4:22-CR-06005-SAB, indictment for business email compromise, money laundering, and bank fraud conspiracy involving fraud of approximately three-quarters of a million dollars from the Benton County government; HPM Corporation; 4:22-MJ-07038-JPH, global criminal and civil fraud settlement in March 2022 recovering $3 million from Hanford Site prime contractor for fraudulent COVID-19 relief claims under the Paycheck Protection Program; Ali Abed Yaser, et al., 4:21-CR-6042-SMJ, twenty-three people indicted in January 2022, for an alleged staged automobile accident scheme;  Cody Easterday, 4:21-cr-06012-SAB, sentenced to 11 years and $244 million in restitution in October 2022 for a massive fraud scheme involving fictitious cattle;   U.S. ex rel. Avila v. Sunrhys, LLC, 4:21-cv-05013-TOR, civil prosecution involving civil rights violations and housing fraud, resulting in July 2022 recovery of significant civil penalties and other remedial measures for a landlord in Walla Walla that was overcharging tenants and fraudulently obtaining federal subsidies intended to assist homeless veterans;   U.S. ex rel. Yam v. Providence Health and Services; 4:20-CV-05004-SMJ, civil fraud prosecution and recovery in April 2022 of over $22.7 million for fraudulent billing of medically-unnecessary neurosurgery procedures to Medicare and Medicaid at Providence St. Mary’s Medical Center in Walla Walla;   Trent Drexel Howard, 4:19-CR-06036-SMJ, sentenced to 23 years in federal prison in January 2022 for child pornography offenses after being extradited from Kazakhstan; Julio Leal Parra et. al., 4:19-CR-06061-SAB, sentenced to 16 years for a large drug-trafficking conspiracy involving ties to the Sinaloa cartel – Parra was one of five charged defendants in the case; Dr. Janet Sue Arnold, 4:18-CR-6044-EFS-1, sentenced to four years in federal prison in April 2022, for conspiring to distribute medically unnecessary fentanyl patches, opioid pills and other controlled substances out of her medical practice; Dale Gordon Black, 4:18-CR-6029-EFS, sentenced to 30 years in prison in July 2019, for producing child pornography; Hector Medina, 4:18-cr-06024-SMJ, sentenced to 15 years for in an overdose death and drug-trafficking conspiracy;  Reynaldo Perez Munoz, 4:18-CR-6008-EFS, sentenced to 26 years in transnational conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, and to launder money gained from illegal drug distribution;  Josue Medina-Perez and Francisco Delgado, 19-CR-06018-EFS, ten-defendant transnational drug conspiracy, which was one of the first fentanyl conspiracies involving prosecution of an Arizona-based source of supply; Sami Anwar, 4:18-cr-5064-EFS, sentenced to more than 28 years in October, 2020, after a three-week trial for falsifying human clinical research data; Rosalio Emmanuel Sanchez, 4:17-CR-06014-WFN-6, sentenced to 22 years in prison in May 2019, for distributing illegal narcotics in the Tri-Cities area after a five-day jury trial in Richland; Bechtel Corporation et al., 4:17-CV-5074-SMJ, civil fraud prosecution and recovery in September 2020 of $57.75 million from Hanford Site prime contractor for fraudulent overbilling on radioactive waste treatment plant project; Miles Barton Nichols, 4:16-CR-6033-EFS-1, sentenced to life in prison in 2018 after being convicted in two separate jury trial of drug trafficking and firearms offenses. U.S. ex rel. Savage v. CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Company; U.S. ex rel. Savage v. Washington Closure Hanford, et al; 4:14-CV-5002-SMJ and 4:10-CV-5051-SMJ; recoveries of approximately $10 million between 2017 and 2021 from Hanford Site contractors for use of fraudulent small business front companies on Hanford Site subcontracts.  Bechtel National Inc., 13-CV-5013-EFS, civil fraud prosecution and $125 million recovery in November 2016 from Hanford Site contractor for use of substandard materials, quality assurance violations, and improper use of federal funds for lobbying activity.  CH2M Hill Hanford Group, 09-CV-5038-EFS, civil and criminal prosecutions of time charging fraud at the Hanford Site, resulting in twelve criminal convictions and recovery of more than $18.5 million in damages and penalties between 2012 and 2015.    Currently, the Tri-Cities area is served by several federal judges:  U.S. Circuit Judge for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Salvador Mendoza, Jr.; Senior U.S. District Court Judge Edward F. Shea, U.S. District Court Judge Mary K. Dimke, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Alexander C. Ekstrom. Relatedly, many federal law enforcement agencies – to include the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Customs and Border Patrol, the Drug Enforcement Administration; FBI; Homeland Security Investigations; Department of Energy Office of Inspector General; and the U.S. Marshal’s Service to name a few – have staffed offices, agents, and task force officers in the Tri-Cities area.  Regarding the federal presence in the area, U.S. Attorney Waldref added, “We will continue to support our federal, state, and local partners who have a long-established presence in Benton, Franklin, and Walla Walla Counties. We have been working closely with our law enforcement partners in Southeast Washington for years, and are thrilled to build even stronger relationships to make our growing communities in this region safer and stronger.”  United States Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer for the Eastern District of Washington. She leads an office of 29 Assistant United States Attorneys:  23 in Spokane and 6 in Yakima.  In the near future, that number is anticipated to grow by at least 2 in the new staffed Richland Office.

The Régie De Courances: A Royal Family-Friendly Cottage 1 Hour From Paris – Forbes https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-regie-de-courances-a-royal-family-friendly-cottage-1-hour-from-paris-forbes/ Alexis Armanet Head to the Essone département in the Ile de France region close to the Gâtinais forest, and find a picture-perfect landscape of green fields dotted with pretty rural towns and villages, and one of France’s most well maintained castles, the Château de Courances. Still lived in by its current owner, the handsome 17th century castle is the stuff of dreams. Think tall winding iron gates, an elegant double stone staircase leading up to the main floors, honey hued stone exterior coiffed by a light slate roof and surrounded by acres of magnificent gardens. © Eric Sander Upscale French self-catering rentals company Pierres d’Histoire has made it possible to have Courances all to yourself for a few days by renting out the former estate manager’s home to guests. The Régie de Courances, a two-floor cottage with all the trimmings — including high chairs and cots, and toys for the little ones — sits at the entrance of the castle grounds and gives guests a taste of chateau life. Pull back the velvet drapes in the morning and you’ll be charmed by the daylight filtering through tall swaying chestnut trees that line the long driveway to the castle. Each floor has an apartment with two bedrooms and a kitchen, which the owners have been careful not to overly restore so the spaces still feel homely and lived-in. Hand drawn sketches and water colors of birds and plant life found on the grounds hang in the hallway, while a selection of books about the region and the artists who lived nearby in Barbizon or Milly-la-Forêt like Jean Cocteau and Niki de Saint Phalle are scattered on console tables by soft velvet couches and Victorian chaise longues arranged under floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the park with a creak. Alexis Armanet In winter, sit reading by the open fire in the living room after brisk countryside walks through the 185 acres of grounds (open to the public at weekends) of forested land and gardens with water features that look like something out of a fairy tale — perfect for younger guests to amble through. In summer, picnics are to be had out on the lawn that last until the setting sun makes the castle’s walls glow pink and purple. Just an hour south from Paris, Courances is located on the outskirts of the Gâtinais forest, which is great for dipping into nature and getting a taste for French countryside living without having to travel far from the city. Alexis Armanet At Courances, there’s also a small café in the old water mill where you can have lunch or tea and cake, with a nook of tables in a small clearing of the forest at the back, or a terrace at the front that looks out onto meticulously looked after Japanese gardens. Line the gardens and you’ll come to a wooden gate that leads to the restaurant where the kind staff, who are really great with kids, serve lunch, dinner and brunch at the weekends, on open-timber tables decorated with the most beautiful fresh flowers. Below is a small boutique selling produce grown on nearby farms like fruit and vegetables, a small selection of locally made jams, pasta and other sundries, as well as a collection of handmade soaps and wooden utensils for bathrooms and kitchens. James Darling Photography For evenings and mornings off, guests can also order breakfast baskets of fresh crusty baguettes and salted butter, jams and fruit to be delivered to the door, and light Mediterranean focused home cooked meals mixing with local produce from the restaurant kitchen. Respectful renovations of historic properties is what sets Pierres d’Histoire apart from other vacation home rental companies. As well as the Régie de Courances, the small company has six other maisons including a manor in Normandy, two stately family homes and an apartment on the grounds of another chateau not far from Courances, as well as a beautiful manor house in the Luberon countryside and a restored mill in the Languedoc. Each property’s soul shines through thanks to carefully considered refurbishments and tasteful hand-picked finds that fit with each house’s story, making it feel more like staying with a friend than in just another impersonal rental. %

Adding up the cost as she went along, she suddenly realised that she didn’t have enough to pay for it all.  Her heart thumping, she looked down at some of the most expensive items – a block of cheese, some fruit and a box of washing powder – and, on the spur of the moment, surreptitiously slid them under her large handbag in her trolley, before walking over to the till and paying for the rest of the items.  “As I left the shop, I was convinced the security guard was going to stop me. I thought I was going to be sick,” she recalls.  “When I got outside, I didn’t feel relieved I’d got away with stealing – just a deep sense of shame. “Despite working part-time, I felt like I’d been left with no choice. “I couldn’t see my children go hungry and I couldn’t send them to school in dirty clothes.” Sadly, Sarah is just one of many who have found themselves in a desperate situation since the cost of living crisis began in late 2021, fuelled by a perfect storm of rising gas prices, disruption to global supply chains and the war in Ukraine. Most read in The Irish Sun According to the Office For National Statistics, 89% of the UK’s adult population has seen their cost of living increase dramatically, leading to 16 million people cutting back on food and essentials. In August this year, prices rose higher than they had done in 40 years, with food in shops increasing by 5.1% and fresh food rising by a whopping 10.5%. The following month, proposed tax cuts put forward by Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng in his mini-budget left financial traders predicting interest rate rises by the Bank of England could be nearly 6% by spring 2023, meaning rocketing rents and mortgages that will lead to further hardship for many of us. Even with the recent U-turn on plans to scrap the 45p income tax rate for higher earners, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves says: “It’s come too late for the families who will pay higher mortgages and higher prices for years to come. Plus, the government has also not ruled out further U-turns or even cuts to benefits in the future” Despite soaring costs, Sarah’s wages from her receptionist job have – like so many others – stayed the same, and even taking on extra hours hasn’t helped enough. On top of her take-home pay of £350 a month, Sarah receives £36.25 a week in child benefit and £300 in maintenance from her ex-partner, who she split from eight months ago. After she has spent £500 on rent and £150 on bills, she is left with £145 a month for everything else, including food and essentials, public transport, clothes and the kids’ school events and trips.  And she’s not alone. Recent research from national poverty charity Turn2us revealed almost half its users reported being left with nothing to live on each week after paying rent, council tax and utility bills. “Every day, we see more people struggling to afford life’s absolute basics as the cost of living continues to push millions of people to the edge of a financial crisis,” says Michael Clarke, head of information programmes at Turn2us. “We are hearing from parents who are making impossible choices between paying soaring energy bills or rent, or skipping meals to keep their children fed. “This isn’t right. Many people using our services come to us when they are at their most desperate. And we fear the worst is yet to come.” Skipping meals to feed her children is something Sarah is well used to. “When the cost of living crisis started, I told myself things would be OK if I tightened my belt for a bit. “I made sure I only put the heating on when it was really cold, and began to walk where possible to save on public transport costs – but it wasn’t enough,” she says. “Soon I was skipping my evening meal to make sure my children didn’t go hungry and batch cooking twice a week so I didn’t have to use the oven every evening.  “At night, hungry and sometimes cold, I felt low and useless and questioned how my life had come to this.” Sarah says it was months of financial hardship that made her finally snap and shoplift for the very first time in her life – something she would never even have contemplated before. “I come from a nice, decent family and considered myself a ‘normal’ mum. I’d never broken the law before and prided myself on being a good role model to my children,” she says.  “I told myself I’d never shoplift again, but a month later, I had just £10 left. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to afford food for the week, let alone laundry detergent and sanitary products for myself. Outside the shop, I didn’t feel relieved I’d got away with it – just a deep sense of shame “I was too embarrassed to ask my family for help, and didn’t know how to go about finding a food bank. “So after a sleepless night, trying and failing to come up with a solution, I went to a different supermarket and chose two bags of pasta and the cheapest tomato sauce I could find, plus two boxes of cereal, six bananas, a loaf of bread and two pints of milk – and that was my £10 gone.” As Sarah added tampons, sanitary towels and the cheapest washing powder to her basket, her hands began to shake and her chest tightened. Taking a deep breath, she headed to the self-service till, scanned her food, pressed pay, then pretended to scan the other items. “That night, the guilt just ate me up and I couldn’t stop crying,” Sarah recalls. “I felt like a criminal and a bad mum.” She called a close friend, who confided that another friend – a single mum of three – had also seen no alternative but to take items without paying for them, because she didn’t have any money left after paying her bills.  In May this year, supermarket trade magazine The Grocer reported that store managers had noticed a rise in first-time shoplifters, with one saying they’d seen shoplifting starting to rise across everyday and low-value items, in contrast to the more often targeted luxury, high-cost items professional shoplifters take to sell on at a profit.  In the same month, HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Andy Cooke, told The Guardian that police officers should use discretion when deciding whether to prosecute desperate shoplifters amid rising poverty levels. Jess Phillips, Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley and Shadow Minister for Domestic Violence and Safeguarding, is not surprised some mums have shoplifted since the start of the cost of living crisis. Where to get help Call Citizens Advice and the Trussell Trust’s Help Through Hardship helpline free on 0808 208 2138. StepChange provides free advice on what to do if you need help with money or food. Visit Stepchange.org and search “emergency help” or call 0800 138 1111. FoodCycle uses surplus ingredients to provide free hot meals to those in need. Find your nearest location at Foodcycle.org.uk. She says: “People, especially single mums, have been living on or over the edge for a long time already. “But in the last three months, I’ve noticed a new level of edge in their voices and correspondence – they are upset and desperate. “There’s this terrible unknown – people don’t know what’s coming, so I can imagine the amount of strain they’re under and the real fear they’re feeling will make them behave in ways which are completely contrary to their normal behaviour.”  Jess is currently in contact with one woman, a single mum who is currently off sick from work, who at one point had just 7p left in her bank account to feed her and her children. “What’s she supposed to do?” Jess says. “Even emergency resources take 48 hours to be put in place.” Although Jess managed to arrange emergency food parcels, the woman in question is just one of many in a desperate situation.  “It’s like living in a Dickens novel,” Jess says. “You wouldn’t believe the number of people living on uncooked food, such as crisp sandwiches, to save them the cost of putting the oven or microwave on.”  Indeed, those on the lowest incomes are faring the worst. New research from The Trussell Trust released last month found that more than 2 million people receiving Universal Credit had skipped meals during the previous three months, and 38% said they’d gone a whole day on one meal or no food at all in the last month, because they couldn’t afford to buy enough food. The Trussell Trust says it now expects increasing numbers of people will rely on food banks, which are already struggling to keep up with demand, unless the government takes immediate action to ensure the social security system provides people with enough support to afford the essentials. Meanwhile, a new survey on food poverty in schools, due to be published next month by Chefs In Schools, a healthy eating charity that trains chefs for school kitchens, has reported that schools are already seeing a heartbreaking increase in hungry children. Headteachers have told the charit...

Colorado State Vs. Utah State Live Updates Score, Results, Highlights, For Saturday’s NCAA Football Game – CBS Sports https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/colorado-state-vs-utah-state-live-updates-score-results-highlights-for-saturdays-ncaa-football-game-cbs-sports/ The Colorado State Rams have been on the wrong side of a one-way rivalry with the Utah State Aggies and are hoping to record their first win since Oct. 7 of 2017. The Rams and Utah State will face off in a Mountain West battle at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at Canvas Stadium. Allowing an average of 35.6 points per game, Colorado State has been asleep on the defensive side of the ball and will need to wake up before the game. Colorado State came out on top in a nail-biter against the Nevada Wolf Pack last week, sneaking past 17-14. Among those leading the charge for Colorado State was RB Avery Morrow, who picked up 169 yards on the ground on 24 carries. Meanwhile, Utah State beat the Air Force Falcons 34-27 last week. Utah State QB Cooper Legas was slinging it as he passed for two TDs and 215 yards on 23 attempts in addition to rushing for one TD and 66 yards. The Rams are the clear underdogs, so they’re hoping it’s the size of the fight that determines this one. Those who got lucky with them against the spread last Friday might want to hold off on placing bets this time since the team has yet to string together back-to-back wins against the spread. Colorado State was close but no cigar when the two teams previously met in October of last year as they fell 26-24 to the Aggies. Maybe Colorado State will have more luck at home instead of on the road? Watch the matchup and check back on CBS Sports for all the details. Season Leaders passing L. Bonner753 YD, 6 TDS, 8 INTS L. Metaverse VP Sharma To Head Stripe’s Revenue And Financial Management – PYMNTS.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/metaverse-vp-sharma-to-head-stripes-revenue-and-financial-management-pymnts-com/ A vice president of Meta’s virtual reality (VR) social platform Horizon Worlds is now over at Stripe working with a new product team. Vivek Sharma started as Stripe’s new head of revenue and financial management this week and is collaborating with a new team developing products aimed at helping businesses manage, track and analyze their revenue, according to his LinkedIn post on Friday (Oct. 14). “There’s been huge creativity in online business models over the last decade. Retailers are becoming marketplaces and platforms, marketplaces are becoming retailers, fintech and the creator economy are everywhere,” Sharma said. “But financial systems haven’t kept up. Businesses are still constrained by the basics: how do we bill our users and/or support new billing models? How do we track all of these financial assets and obligations sloshing around in the cloud? And how do we do this compliantly in markets around the world?” See also: Meta’s VP of Horizon Vivek Sharma Steps Down Sharma stepped down in August, replaced by Vishal Shah, PYMNTS reported at the time. Sharma was part of a team developing the virtual experience inside the metaverse accessible by users through Meta’s VR devices. His exit followed criticism over the graphics quality of Horizon Worlds after CEO Mark Zuckerberg released an in-world avatar of himself that had no legs and was called dated in its appearance and overall quality.  Read more: Meta Metaverse Weekly: In Horizon Worlds, Emperor Has No Legs At Stripe, Sharma moves away from the problems of the metaverse and instead takes on revenue and financial management for businesses in the regular universe.   “We’re helping businesses earn more money in more ways — vital in the current slowdown — and make accounting, tax and analytics a ton easier so they can manage that revenue for a lot less effort,” Sharma said. “Stripe powers millions of businesses. … Getting this right could be a big driver of economic opportunity for businesses around the world,” he added. Terra Classic Price Prediction Is LUNC Dead Two Experts Predict Zero Cryptonews
Terra Classic Price Prediction – Is LUNC Dead, Two Experts Predict ‘Zero’ – Cryptonews https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/terra-classic-price-prediction-is-lunc-dead-two-experts-predict-zero-cryptonews/ The day the Terra Classic price (LUNC) hit its 2022 top, two of the best crypto traders correctly predicted the bull run was over. That was September 8th, when the LUNC price reached $0.000593 on Binance, and as of mid October LUNC is now trading over 50% lower, below the $0.0003 support level. Terra LUNA Classic Price Prediction – Light Crypto Light (@lightcrypto), who has 169,000 followers, tweeted: “Think LUNC burn trade is about to implode, momentum just broke, elevator down is a high possibility”. GCR (@GiganticRebirth), who has 187,000 followers, replied from his secondary account with a Hillary Clinton quote “that’s right, zero”. GCR famously won a $10 million bet against former Terraform Labs CEO Do Kwon, with his bearish Terra LUNA price prediction back in March. Light, who runs a prop trading firm, then posted a long tweet thread a few days later with a mix of fundamental and technical analysis: As well as predicting the Terra Classic price action would be a pump and dump – “pumped by hit-and-run developers and cynical exchange operators, all taking advantage of the hordes of retail looking to make it all back in one trade” he tweeted a few days later that LUNC would drop 90%+ to return to its origin, or lower. Later that month, the LUNC price did crash 70% to $0.000179, although nothing goes down in a straight line (the Terra LUNA collapse in May was a black swan event caused by the circulating supply hyper inflating to 6.5 trillion). For Light’s prediction to play out – he charted a target of $0.00004, the yearly low of the new Terra Classic asset since the hard fork, hit on June 9th 2022 – the LUNC price would need to drop 84% from today’s price. October LUNC Price Prediction Tweets – LUNC Burn Light’s most recent tweet thread this month centres around Binance burning LUNC tokens, and how the 1.2% LUNC burn is not enough to justify Terra Classic increasing over $1 billion in market cap since it was announced. He also posted Coinalyze data on Oct 3rd showing an “insane amount of deadwood to wipe out in LUNC derivatives, $262.2 million across venues and instruments, all levered, all driven by a bankrupt narrative into a sell the news event.” Light opened a Terra Classic short position on Oct 2nd: “LUNC managed to add over $1b in market capitalization on a Binance announcement that will see a few million dollars removed from its circulating supply tomorrow. And in the long run, that weekly burn will trend to 0 along with LUNC’s volume. Filled full short again.” Incredibly, Oct 2nd was again a top, as the LUNC price spiked back to $0.000372 but the bounce from $0.0001794 ended there. Like his Sept 8th post, the Terra Classic price has not traded higher than that day since then. Across crypto Twitter circles, Light is considered one of the best crypto traders to follow for price predictions and other market analysis. As is GCR, who corrected predicted the Bitcoin price was topped out back in November 2021, when the all-time high of $69,000 was hit and the bear market began. We reported on how Gigantic Rebirth shorted LUNC at $0.00042 on Sept 9th, and was up almost $4.4 million in PnL a week later. Also on the day the Terra Classic price topped, another notable crypto analyst Tree of Alpha compared LUNC to a ponzi scheme and pointed out transaction tax burns didn’t prevent SafeMoon from going to zero. Terra Classic Alternatives If Light and GCR’s Terra Classic predictions continue to be accurate – as they have been so far – retail investors holding LUNC will stand to lose a lot in the correction. See our reviews of the latest crypto presales for some high potential LUNC alternatives. New token presales typically generate a higher ROI than assets that already have a multi-billion dollar market capitalization. We previously reviewed Tamadoge before it outperformed the Terra Classic bull run within the space of a week, rising over 1,900% before a retracement. Our latest review is of IMPT token, a carbon offsetting crypto project with greater real-world utility than LUNC. Visit IMPT.io

Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die BBC
Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die BBC
Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die – BBC https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/opioid-crisis-us-teens-fastest-growing-group-to-die-bbc/ Image source, Ramos family Image caption, Melanie Ramos was 15 when she took a pill that killed her By Regan Morris BBC News, Los Angeles Teen overdose deaths have never been higher in the US as young Americans are increasingly poisoned by the synthetic opiate fentanyl, even as fewer teens use drugs. More than 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses last year – the vast majority were adults – but the fastest growing group to die of overdoses were teenagers. Melanie Ramos’ family knows this all too well. The 15-year-old girl died inside her school’s bathroom last month after taking a pill laced with fentanyl. Melanie and her friend thought they were taking Percocet, a pain medication that is sometimes abused. But the counterfeit pills were laced with fentanyl and she was poisoned. “She was a beautiful, sweet girl coming from hardworking parents,” her uncle Oscar said at a candlelight vigil on the steps of Bernstein High School, where friends and family prayed in Spanish and placed flowers on a shrine to Melanie. Fentanyl is typically smuggled into the United States by Mexican drug cartels. While it used to be laced into the hardest drugs like heroin, the cartels now mass-produce fentanyl pills in rainbow colours to mimic prescription pills and, some say, to target kids who are more willing to experiment with them. In Los Angeles a spate of overdose deaths from pills has authorities worried, and on Wednesday, the state of California seized 52lb (24kg) of fentanyl powder – enough to make a quarter million pills – as part of a state-wide operation led by the Justice department. But the problem extends across the US. In New York last week, authorities seized 15,000 rainbow coloured pills hidden in a Lego toy box. The US is an outlier when it comes to overdoses, with a death rate 20 times the global average – although Scotland is not far behind. “We are far and away the world leader in overdose death unfortunately,” said Joseph Friedman, a substance use researcher at the University of California Los Angeles. The overdose rate among school-aged children in the US doubled between 2019 and 2020 and then rose a further 20% last year, he said. “Teen drug use is becoming more dangerous but not more common,” Mr Friedman said, adding that fentanyl, not the stress of the pandemic was to blame: Teen drug use actually dropped sharply during the pandemic because it is usually a social activity. Image caption, Melanie’s high school, like other LA schools, will now stock Narcan, an overdose reversal medication At a contentious meeting at Bernstein High School, where Melanie died, officials and police warned upset families and children that “one pill can kill”. Her death has prompted LA officials to stock the overdose reversal medication, Narcan, in every school. The medication, which commonly comes in the form of a nasal spray, can be used by anyone to reverse the effects of an overdose. Increasing access to Narcan is also part of a federal response to the opioid crisis announced this month by the Biden administration, which said it would inject $1.5bn (£1.3bn) to fund programmes and support law enforcement to go after drug traffickers. Experts say teens will experiment with drugs no matter what they are told or taught in schools, so overdose prevention is the only way to slow the growth in overdose deaths. Community Health Project Los Angeles workers provide free Narcan and fentanyl testing strips – so people can test drugs before getting high. They are glad schools will now keep Narcan on hand, and have urged parents and kids to carry it in their backpacks. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Schools will have the nasal spray version of Narcan At a recent training, drug and alcohol counsellor Sandra Mims demonstrated how to use the spray – one spritz up the nose, followed by a rub on the sternum. Then another spray 2-3 minutes later if the person overdosing did not respond. “Children start as young as 12,” Ms Mims said. “It’s so much more deadly now with fentanyl and the synthetic pills.” Nick Angelo, who has used opiates in the past but now works for the non-profit, saved three people with Narcan in a single week. But he sounded weary rather than heroic when talking about it. “When me and my friends were using opiates we didn’t have to worry that every single hit we took could be our last,” he said.

Late Rally Lifts Auburn Baseball Past Louisiana Tech – Auburn Tigers Official Athletic Site https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/late-rally-lifts-auburn-baseball-past-louisiana-tech-auburn-tigers-official-athletic-site/ AUBURN, Ala. – Trailing by six in the 10th inning, Auburn tied the game with six runs in the home half of the frame and used a go-ahead homer in the 11th to complete the comeback and defeat Louisiana Tech 12-11 Saturday at Plainsman Park. After doubling in two runs to start the comeback in the six-run 10th, Brody Wortham hit a solo homer with one out in the 11th that proved to be the difference. Chris Stanfield tied the game with a two-out single in the 10th before Wortham’s game-winner. To make way for the comeback, Auburn’s bullpen quartet of Tanner Bauman, John Armstrong, Tommy Vail and Chase Isbell did not allow a baserunner in the last five innings. Bauman pitched two scoreless while the other three each turned in clean frames. Vail struck out the side in the 11th and earned the win. Isbell recorded the final three outs, including a strikeout, to record the save. Cam Hill got Auburn’s scoring started with a sacrifice fly in the second and Ike Irish hit a solo homer in the third. The team then scored three runs on a wild pitch and fielder’s choice in the eighth before exploding in the late innings. The Left Turn – West Bend News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-left-turn-west-bend-news/ 2022 Fremont Speedway 410 Sprint Track Champion Greg Mintz. Photo Credit: Action Photos By: Ron Burt Last week, Fremont Speedway crowned it’s 2022 season track champions under the lights on a perfect night to race on the Track That Action Built. Craig Mintz won the 410 Sprint track championship for his fourth time. Paul Weaver clinched his fourth division track title in the 305 Sprints. Jamie Miller clinched his first ever Dirt Truck division title. In 410 Sprint action, Greg Wilson survived five cautions during the final eight laps to claim his fourth Fremont Speedway feature win of 2022. Wilson dominated much of the 30 lap 410 sprint feature, building a nearly four second lead just past lap-15, but late race cautions, including one with just two laps to go, kept the field close. The Benton Ridge Ohio resident was able to drive to his 17th career Fremont win over DJ  Foos, and Craig Mintz. In the 25 lap 305 sprint feature, DJ Foos, doing double race duty, took the lead from Kasey Jedrzejek on lap five and then held off Alvin Roepke after a caution with just four laps remaining to score his 25th career Fremont win. At the end it was DJ Foos, Alvin Roepke and Bryan Sebetto. In the Dirt Truck 20 lap feature several early cautions kept the field close with Jim Holcomb holding a narrow lead the first five laps before Dave Gumby took command. Jim Holcomb, Jeff Babcock, Jamie Miller and Ben Clapp battled for the runner-up spot until Babcock took second on lap 10. Gumby and Babcock ran side by side the final five laps with Gumby holding on for the win. Finishing behind your winner 2nd Jeff Babcock and 3rd Jamie Miller. Saturday night also saw action at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, Sheldon Haudenschild, fresh off a second-place finish at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday – made the five-hour tow westward. The Sprint Car portion that highlighted the two-day Ohio Dirt Blowout. WCS’s 10th annual edition of the extravaganza produced a near-record 167 cars and stars in the pits. Haudenschild’s victory was his ninth of the 2022 season and was worth $3,000. The third-generation star led all 25 laps of the event in posting the win, as the 28-year-old now has a Dirt Blowout title to go along with a World of Outlaws win, four All Star Circuit of Champions victories, a pair of Pete Jacobs Memorial trophies, and a BOSS non-wing victory at WCS. Haudenschild, outdistanced Washington state invader JJ Hickle and western Pennsylvania’s Brandon Spithaler. Newly crowned track champion Henry Malcuit raced home fourth. Todd Brennan started on the pole of the 25-lap, $2,000-to-win Late Model main and needed every ounce of his racing experience in getting his No. 20 to victory lane. Doug Drown was 2nd and Matt Lux 3rd. The rest of the race day results can be found on the Ohio Sports Blitz, Facebook page along with high school football (LIVE) scores every Friday night at 9:30 and 10:30PM. Elections Expected To Bring Smiles To Travel And Hotel Industry – The Star Online https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/elections-expected-to-bring-smiles-to-travel-and-hotel-industry-the-star-online/ PETALING JAYA: Despite the gloomy skies of the monsoon season, the 15th General Election (GE15) is still expected to bring a ray of sunshine to the domestic travel and hospitality industry. Even with predictions of a lower voter turnout due to political fatigue and the possibility of polling day being a weekday, domestic travel is expected to see a rise during the election period. This is because party workers, election staff and voters will be on the ground, said Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents president Datuk Tan Kok Liang. “Hotels, transport service providers, and food and beverage outlets can look forward to a significant rise in revenue,” he added. Asked if there had been tour cancellations or changes in vacation dates by holidaymakers, Tan said this has not been the case as voting is not mandatory in Malaysia. “Many families are going ahead with their overseas holidays regardless of the polling date, and international tours that had been booked earlier will likely proceed. “Cancellations are minimal except for active politicians and party members who may have other responsibilities,” he said. According to Melaka Tourism Association president Madelina Kuah, no bookings by independent travellers or group package tours have been cancelled so far. She said that since Melaka had already held its state election in 2021, there were only six parliamentary seats up for grabs in GE15. “On voting day, it is likely that people who have committed to travelling will go ahead,” said Kuah. Sky Mirror Tour & Travel Sdn Bhd managing director Dyven Wong said people are waiting until the Election Commission (EC) announces the polling date before rescheduling travel plans. “Until today, no customer has cancelled or postponed bookings because of GE15,” he said. Political analyst Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian of Universiti Sains Malaysia expects voter turnout in this election to be lower than in GE14 in 2018, which was at 82.32%. A low turnout will give an advantage to Barisan Nasional, he said, adding that the high turnout in GE14 saw Pakatan Harapan form the government for the first time, while low turnouts at the Melaka and Johor state elections secured big wins for Barisan Nasional. “It is very likely that many Malaysians will not come back to vote unless political parties can convince them,” said the professor. Prof Sivamurugan also said a low turnout could also be expected if GE15 is held on a weekday, adding that this is nothing new. “The last GE was held on a Wednesday. In fact, our first GE after independence in 1959 was held on a Wednesday; GE9 on a Tuesday; and GE10 on a Monday. “However, it’s better to have it on a weekend to encourage more voters to come out and vote,” he said, adding that Malaysian voters are also tired of the continuous politicking since 2018. “A ‘wow’ or feel-good factor will motivate them to come out, but it all depends on issues brought up by the parties and candidates,” he said. The EC will meet on Thursday to set nomination and polling dates. %

J.C. Jackson Not Producing Interceptions On Chargers Defense Los Angeles Times
J.C. Jackson Not Producing Interceptions On Chargers Defense – Los Angeles Times https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/j-c-jackson-not-producing-interceptions-on-chargers-defense-los-angeles-times/ He denied that he’s pressing, J.C. Jackson insisting that his contract isn’t weighing on him like some $82.5-million anchor strapped to his back. Part of the problem, Jackson explained, is that he should be pressing, as in playing a tighter, more aggressive style at the line of scrimmage. “I’m a bump-and-run corner, a press corner,” Jackson said. “That’s my game. I need to stick to my game.” The Chargers signed Jackson in March to a five-year deal guaranteeing him $40 million and potentially worth more than double that amount. He cashed in financially after blossoming as an undrafted free agent in New England. Jackson was acquired to help ignite a defense that too often went flat last year. The Chargers needed more game-changers, more playmakers who could steal footballs and momentum. In the previous four seasons, no one in the NFL had more interceptions than Jackson’s 25. He made his first Pro Bowl last year after leading the league with 23 passes defensed. But in three games with his new team, Jackson has struggled to produce. He has yet to intercept a pass and has been credited with just a single breakup. Jackson missed the Chargers’ season opener and then their Week 3 matchup while dealing with the lingering effects of an August surgical procedure on his right ankle. Both he and coach Brandon Staley said the time off has been a factor in his slow start, but Jackson insisted he is healthy. Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson warms up before a win over the Houston Texans on Oct. 2. (Bob Levey / Getty Images) “The ankle thing has nothing to do with it,” he said. “It’s more about technique and fundamentals. It’s still a learning process with the defense and everything else. I’m not blaming my ankle. I’m 100% healthy.” Said Staley: “We brought him here to do what he does best. We’re not trying to change him, that’s for sure. It’s just him getting out there with his teammates, getting in rhythm and playing his game.” His game, Jackson assured, will be on display soon, the cornerback suggesting that a first-strike approach will lead to increased production. As a starter, he never has played more zone than he has this season, according to Next Gen Stats. Last weekend in Cleveland, Jackson was beaten in the first quarter for an 11-yard touchdown in man-to-man coverage by Amari Cooper. When the ball was snapped, Jackson was nearly 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. He ended up surrendering five receptions for 58 yards against the Browns as they targeted him a team-high nine times, according to Pro Football Focus. But Chargers defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill said Jackson’s performance improved after halftime, after the coaches “challenged him” and made adjustments. “The second half, we felt like that story was a little bit different,” Hill said. “He got out there in press and challenged a little bit more, and it looked a whole lot better. That is what we have to continue to do. … He’s going to mix it up. But we know that his strong suit is getting up there and pressing.” Jackson has been targeted 20 times this season while allowing 15 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns, according to PFF. He yielded 108 of those yards in Week 4 at Houston. During his four years with the Patriots, Jackson never finished with a PFF coverage grade below 70. So far for the Chargers, he has graded out at less than half that number: 32.1. “Nobody knows my confidence more than me,” Jackson said. “Nobody’s got higher standards than myself. I’m gonna get back to where I should be soon. This is nothing I can’t handle.” To follow Jackson on Twitter, search for “MR_INT,” a reference to the ball-thieving ways that marked his time in New England. During a stretch in 2020, he had interceptions in five consecutive games. But, dating to his final appearance with the Patriots, he has gone four in a row without a pickoff, matching the longest such streak of his career in games he has started. Jackson’s most recent interception came Jan. 2 against Trevor Lawrence on a day when the Jacksonville quarterback was picked off three times. “Each week, I feel like J.C.’s growing,” safety Derwin James Jr. said. “He’s gonna keep improving. Eventually, he’s gonna play the way we know he can play. We all know what type of player J.C. is.” Jackson and James have lockers next to each other in the Chargers’ Costa Mesa training facility. Last week while Jackson was talking to reporters, James leaned in and said, “I can’t wait till you get your first pick.” Responded Jackson: “That’s what they waitin’ for. The world waitin’ on that.” Reminded that the world includes the Chargers and their fans, Jackson smiled. “Once I start making plays, y’all are going to see,” he said. “Then we’re going to see what they got to say then. … It’s just a matter of time.” Etc. The Chargers likely will be without Keenan Allen (hamstring) on Monday night against Denver after the wide receiver was limited in practice all week. He was listed as doubtful. … Trey Pipkins III (knee) was listed as questionable, but Staley indicated he expects the right tackle to play. … Kicker Dustin Hopkins (quadriceps) is set to return after missing last week’s game. … Center Corey Linsley also is expected to play after being held out of practice Saturday because of an illness.

Metaverse-Style Avatars Are Now Available In Microsoft Teams – TechRadar https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/metaverse-style-avatars-are-now-available-in-microsoft-teams-techradar/ Home News Software (Image credit: Microsoft) Microsoft has announced that animated avatars are now available in preview for its Teams collaboration platform. Via the Avatars app in the Microsoft Teams App Store, members of the Technical Access Program can now design up to three avatars for use during meetings, and choose from an array of reaction gestures. So-called Mesh avatars were first announced for Microsoft Teams in a blog post (opens in new tab) by John Roach, the company’s CTO of digital advisory services, back in November 2021. Mesh avatars in the workplace Mesh avatars allow for greater freedom of expression in a hybrid working environment, with users able to customize physical attributes, accessories, and other aspects of themselves. Microsoft’s release of the feature at its Ignite event reiterates its commitment to blurring the line between video conferencing software and metaverses, which some business leaders believe are the next big development in collaboration tools following the shift to hybrid working.  These spaces are designed around mesh avatars interacting inside a virtual space equipped with the tools that teams need to collaborate, such as whiteboards, document storage, and video conferencing software. If Microsoft continues to develop metaverse-adjacent features for the Teams platform, it could manage to scupper Meta’s plans for the sector with its own Horizon Workrooms metaverse. Horizon Workrooms could end up being seen as a less convenient offering when up against Teams, a video conferencing app that’s already in use by many organizations and benefits from Microsoft 365 integration. Until then, organizations looking to try out the new mesh avatars but without access to the private preview build can sign up for updates on the Teams website (opens in new tab). Yaber Pico T1 Projector Review GSMArena.com News GSMArena.com
Yaber Pico T1 Projector Review GSMArena.com News GSMArena.com
Yaber Pico T1 Projector Review – GSMArena.com News – GSMArena.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/yaber-pico-t1-projector-review-gsmarena-com-news-gsmarena-com/ Introduction You want a projector to take everywhere with you or just one that doesn’t take space in your living room? Thanks to the magic of LED and DLP technology, projectors come in many sizes. The smallest of these are generally referred to as Pico projectors, and the Yaber Pico T1 is certainly among the most exciting prospects in the category. It is one of the most pocked-friendly projectors we’ve seen to date, measuring just 0.52″ in thickness. The limitations to performance are inevitable tradeoff of a pico projector. The Yaber Pico T1 advertises 110 ANSI lumens of brightness and 540p resolution. Despite its powerbank-like form factor it lacks an onboard battery, but what it does have is Android TV on board, making it a nifty self-contained multimedia player that only needs external power to function. Yaber Pico T1 specs at a glance: Dimensions: 150x75x13.1mm, 150 grams. Optical parameters: DLP projector; 540p (960 x 540 pixels) optical resolution; 16:9 aspect ratio; 350:1 contrast ratio. Projection parameters: 110 ANSI lumens (advertised); 10~100-inch screen diagonal; 0.3 – 2m projection distance; 1.2:1 throw ratio; 30,000 hours RGB LED light source life; luminance uniformity 85% (advertised). Optical adjustment: Automatic vertical keystone correction; manual focus. Audio: 1.5W single speaker. Internals: HiSilicon Hi3751V350 (4xCortex-A53 @ 1.0 GHz); Mali-450 GPU; 1GB of RAM; 32GB storage. Hardware video decoder: H.264, H.265, MPEG1, MPEG2, VP6, VP8, VP9; AAC_LC, HE_AAC, HE_AACV2, LPCM, MP3, APE. I/O: 2xUSB Type-C port: one for power (Quick Charge only, Wireless connectivity: Wi-Fi ac; Bluetooth 4.2; IR remote control. Software: Android TV 9. Other features:Remote control in box; Wireless projection support (Miracast, Apple AirPlay, Eshare); Wired Android phone mirroring through proprietary app. Other highlights include a compact yet very functional remote control on top of integrated touch controls on the unit itself. And the Yaber Pico T1 can do automatic vertical keystone correction, which is not something we would have expected out of a projector of this size. But can the little guy impress us in practice? Follow along for our review to find out. Unboxing and accessories The Pico T1 comes in a pretty non-descript box. Inside, you get a USB Type-C 20W QC wall charger along with two USB cables – one Type-A to Type-C and the other Type-C to Type-C. There’s also a nifty compact tripod that attaches magnetically to the projector as well as a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable. The $28 more expensive IndieGoGo special pack also nets you a 10,000 mAh power back with integrated cables, including a Type-C one to use with the Pico T1. The IndieGoGo crowdfunding page for the project also shows a nice carrying case, but that’s not a part of any of the currently available product bundles. Controls and connectivity The Yaber Pico T1’s right-hand side houses a power button and volume rocker, much like a smartphone would. Above that, we find a manual focus wheel. The left frame of the Pico T1 is bereft of control. The front of the unit houses the optics of the projector, as well as a vent. The small fan here seems to only have one speed, and it’s about as loud as a laptop fan going full steam. There is also a mysterious sensor here, likely some sort of laser or TOF, that is in charge of the automatic vertical keystone correction. The rear side of the Pico T1 has a 1.5W speaker as well as a trio of ports – two Type-C ports and a mini-HDMI port. Of the two Type-C ports, one is just meant to power the device. The Pico T1 supports Quick Charge power with rated inputs of 5V@3A, 9V@2A and 12V@1.5A. The total power rating for the projector is 9W. The other USB Type-C port is a data port. It has USB Host functionality and can take things like a standard HID device like a mouse or keyboard and attach storage mediums. This port can also be used to mirror an Android phone’s display, but only by using a proprietary eShareLine app. It is important to note that this USB lacks any standard video over USB functionality like you would find on, modern external monitors. The Pico T1 can either be controlled through the touchpad, and capacitive combo on the top of the device or the included mini remote control. Built-in Android TV and features The Yaber Pico T1 is a 110-lumen pico projector with an HDMI input and built-in wireless casting functionality, which is already intriguing. However, the built-in Android TV guts make it special beyond that. Let’s quickly go over what is included here and what limitations and issues we encountered. Yaber has its own TV launcher of some sort, which looks and works decently. It revolves around a vertical menu with some self-explanatory options. Smart TV launcher There is a basic file browser right on the main menu to browse local media and quick access to a wireless streaming app that supports Miracast and Apple AirPlay, as well as a proprietary Eshare communication scheme. There are also options for wired streaming from both Android and iOS phones. Yaber has a proprietary app store as well, but that has a very limited selection of apps. Proprietary app store The settings menu is very simple. All of the basic options like display rotation, keystone adjustments, brightness, language and input methods are convenient to access. Basic settings There is a more advanced settings menu as well, which brings you to the standard Android TV settings menu. This is where we ran into our first major issue, though. The regular Android TV settings menu just crashes regardless of what option we selected. This made it impossible to set up some apps like a button remapper or any additional app stores since we were unable to enable the accessibility access and install privileges, respectively. Hopefully, this is just an early software bug with our unit, which will be ironed out. Advanced settings menu and broken Android TV settings Speaking of installing things, we are happy to say that the Yaber Pico T1 has functioning Google Play Services. That means access to the Google Play Store and its pretty substantial collection of Android TV apps. At least, that’s great to see since the proprietary app store is barren. Google Play Store We might not have the ability to easily sideload apps, but at least the Google Play Store has a few nice Android TV launchers, like our personal favorite – the ATV launcher. Alternative Android TV launchers Once you install it, you can even set it as the default by pressing the home button on the Yaber Pico T1. However, you will be stuck with your launcher selection without proper access to the Android TV settings until you install another launcher to get the selection menu again. It’s a clunky limitation to deal with. Performance Let’s now talk about how well the Yaber Pico T1 performs when you are done setting it up. The Yaber Pico T1 isn’t particularly bright. The advertised 110 lumens match reality. With brightness on this scale, you can only expect a vaguely pleasurable experience in a light-controlled room or at night and at a diagonal of no more than about 60 inches. The 960 x 540-pixel resolution is also a bit too low for most text in modern UIs to be legible. You can get away with a large font presentation, but forget about activities like browsing the web. The Yaber Pico T1 is best suited for very casual movie watching in a pinch. What can you expect out of the tiny Android TV internals? Well, here are some screenshots from Aida64 and DRM Info to check on its specs. Hardware specs The Yaber Pico T1 packs a HiSilicon Hi3751V350 chipset, which has just four Cortex-A53 cores at its disposal and a Mali-450 GPU. It is paired with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. That’s a pretty anemic chipset you would probably find in a set-top-box rather than an Android TV device. If you really want to get into the nitty-gritty, you can head on over to the official chipset specs page. The most important specs, arguably, are related to the hardware video decoder. The Hi3751V350 can handle H.264, H.265 (HEVC), VP6/8/9, MVC, MPEG1/2/3/4, AVS and VC-1 at up to 1080p@60fps. That’s plenty to saturate the 540p resolution of the Yaber Pico T1 projector. We did some performance testing and can verify that the UI runs pretty smoothly. Also, 1080p video from YouTube runs just fine without hiccups or stutters. YouTube and Plex testing We pushed the Yaber Pico T1 further still by installing Plex on it. Its UI ran very smooth as well, and we even managed to get some 4K streams working at around 20 Mbps with minimal stutter. Not that you would even need to push quality past HD or FullHD as this is a mere 540p projector. We had some jellyfish bitrate video test files lined up for testing as well on an external USB SSD, but the Yaber Pico T1 failed to read the drive. Failing to read an external drive It mounted it without issue but then failed to read the exFAT file system. We tried an NTFS drive as well, with no luck. Again, we hope that this is just an early software issue with our unit that will get ironed out. We tried running some benchmarks on the Yaber Pico T1 as well. The only thing that actually managed to run was the old T-Rex test in GFXBench, which scored under 10fps on screen. Running benchmarks It is safe to say that you won’t be gaming on the Yaber Pico T1. Though that being said, GeForce Now ran just fine on the little projector. Final thoughts The Yaber Pico T1 is a cool gadget that mostly delivers on its promises to be a very slim portable projector with solid built-in smarts. It’s just that you need to know this class of device’s limitations. One hundred ten lumens is pretty dim, and 540p resolution, while good for a pico projector, is too low for most fine UI elements and tex...
