Crypto Hackers Gross Over $3 Billion From 125 Hacks So Far This Year – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/crypto-hackers-gross-over-3-billion-from-125-hacks-so-far-this-year-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis shows that October is “the biggest month in the biggest year ever for hacking activity.” The firm added that crypto hackers have grossed over $3 billion across 125 hacks so far this year. Crypto-Hacking Activity Soars in October Chainalysis shared some crypto-related hacking statistics Wednesday. The blockchain data analytics firm explained that back in 2019, most hacks targeted centralized exchanges. However, a vast majority of targets are now decentralized finance (defi) protocols. Chainalysis wrote: After four hacks yesterday, October is now the biggest month in the biggest year ever for hacking activity … So far this month, $718 million has been stolen from defi protocols across 11 different hacks. Total value hacked and number of hacks by month. Source: Chainalysis The four hacks that took place on Tuesday involved Rabby wallet, QANPlatform, Temple DAO, and Mango Markets. The biggest exploit of the four was the Solana-based defi protocol Mango Markets hack which saw about $115 million stolen. “Cross-chain bridges remain a major target for hackers, with 3 bridges breached this month and nearly $600 million stolen, accounting for 82% of losses this month and 64% of losses all year,” Chainalysis detailed, elaborating: At this rate, 2022 will likely surpass 2021 as the biggest year for hacking on record. So far, hackers have grossed over $3 billion dollars across 125 hacks. What do you think about the findings by Chainalysis? Let us know in the comments section below. Top 10 U.S. Exports: Aircraft On Path To Lowest Ranking In Decades – Forbes https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/top-10-u-s-exports-aircraft-on-path-to-lowest-ranking-in-decades-forbes/ ustradenumbers.com Boeing stock got a little lift on Friday on the potential for good news. The bump was based on the hopes that the beleaguered airline might beat out rival Airbus for a possible contract for more than 100 United widebody jets. After a bumpy ride the last several years — two fatal crashes and a global pandemic — Boeing could use a “good” bump. Regardless which one of the world’s two dominate aircraft manufacturers wins the contract, presuming it comes to fruition — Chicago-based Boeing or the European consortium Airbus — something will happen this year that has not not happened in decades. The United States will almost certainly see the primary aircraft category, the one that includes Boeing jets, fall to a No. 4 rank in 2022. That, to my knowledge, has not happened for decades. Prior to the release of 2021 data earlier this year, the category had ranked first among more than 1,200 categories in 14 of the previous 17 years. It ranked second the other three. Boeing, as the overwhelmingly dominant force in the aviation category, has long been the poster child for American exports, a sign of American might. This is the sixth in a series of columns about the nation’s exports. It follows similar series I did for the countries that were, at the time, the nation’s top 10 trade partners and one for the airports, seaports and border crossings that were, at the time, the nation’s top 10 “ports.” The first article in this series focused on an overview of the top 10 exports. The second looked at the top 10 countries that are markets for U.S. exports and how they differ from our overall trade partners, which would include imports. ustradenumbers.com The third was about refined petroleum, the top export, followed by one on oil, which ranks second, and natural gas, which includes LNG and ranks third. The good news, short of any announcement by United, is that exports in the primary aviation category, which includes jets and parts, is showing an increase this year, up 14.85%. That’s slower growth than overall U.S. exports, which are up 20.74%. And well below the increase for high-flying refined petroleum, oil and natural gas, which are up 120.66%, 121.52% and 222.44%, respectively. But considering that aircraft exports, at $56.29 billion through August, are down 31.65% from the same eight months of 2018, before the crashes and before the pandemic, the road to recovery remains long. In that same time period that aircraft exports fell almost 32%, U.S. exports have risen 23.94%. Most severely affected in that time period among U.S. airports has been Paine Field near Seattle, which the U.S. Census Bureau includes with the Port of Everett and its ocean cargo. Paine Field is adjacent to Boeing’s manufacturing operations, an enormous complex home to the “largest building in the world.” Aviation exports from there stood at $2.88 billion through this August, which is an increase from the same eight months last year, when the total was $1.74 billion. But for eight consecutive years, from 2012 to 2019, exports through August topped $10 billion, including three years above $15 billion and one above $19 billion. Commercial jet and part exports from Paine Field led the nation 14 of 15 years, from 2005 through 2019. In 2020, exports from Cleveland’s Hopkins International Airport led the nation on an annualized basis. In 2021, it was Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which is on top this year as well. ustradenumbers.com It appears the recovery, for Boeing and for U.S. aviation exports generally, will be underway when the numbers tied to Paine Field start rising to the top again. At this point, it ranks No. 8, behind not only Seattle-Tacoma International Airport but also Miami International Airport, Cleveland International Airport, New Orleans International Airport, Atlanta International Airport, JFK International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. It’s been a bumpy few years for Boeing, long a stalwart performer among U.S. exports, one of the most powerful U.S. brands on the global market. It could use a “good” bump from United.

Longtime UPMC Chautauqua Employee Recalls Career | News, Sports, Jobs – Jamestown Post Journal https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/longtime-upmc-chautauqua-employee-recalls-career-news-sports-jobs-jamestown-post-journal/ Brenda Fitzgerald, in white jacket, is pictured with her former co-workers at UPMC Chautauqua. Fitzgerald worked at the hospital for more than 40 years before retiring in August. Submitted photo Bright-eyed and young, Brenda Fitzgerald always enjoyed meeting the nursing students who were nearing graduation. Their energy and enthusiasm, she noted, was sometimes contagious. When she left school decades earlier, nurses either worked in hospitals or nursing homes. Today, she said, there’s a host of career options: travel nurses, school nurses, public health nurses and clinical nurses, among many others. “To see their passion, they are way more world-smart than I was in the ’70s,” Fitzgerald said of fourth semester students who came to the cardiac rehabilitation department at UPMC Chautauqua as part of their education. “I would tell them to give themselves some time, figure out where they want to go in their career.” In her 40-plus-year-career, Fitzgerald worked in a variety of positions. She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1975 and received a nursing degree two years later from Jamestown Community College. Except for two years as a nurse at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk right out of college, Fitzgerald stayed at WCA Hospital, and later UPMC Chautauqua, for her entire career. ALWAYS LEARNING “It’s changed immensely,” Fitzgerald told The Post-Journal of nursing today compared to her first years on the job. “When they say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, you can, really. I’ve had to learn a lot of different things over the years.” She was hired at the Jamestown hospital as a registered nurse in 1980. She moved to the intensive care unit where she worked for 14 years and eventually landed in the cardiology department. In 2000, Fitzgerald took over the cardiac rehab department and remained in that position until her retirement this past August. “When I started there really was nothing computerized,” she recalled. “It was all hand-written notes; doctors prescribed hand-written orders.” “Eventually, we learned a lot of different techniques,” she said. “When we had new doctors coming in, we learned new procedures and new equipment, obviously. But it definitely changed over the years for the better, obviously, too.” Before the hospital utilized helicopters to transfer patients to-and-from other facilities, Fitzgerald recalled the many trips she took inside the back of an ambulance. When she worked in the intensive care unit, it wasn’t uncommon for her to travel with a patient to ECMC in Buffalo. By the time she got back, it was late and her shift was already over. “There was always a snowstorm,” she said of those long trips. “That’s part of living in Western New York. We never felt unsafe. Some of those trips stood out — getting those patients and ourselves there safely.” TAKING CARE OF THE SICK Working in ICU meant caring for seriously ill patients with life-threatening conditions. While Fitzgerald worked in the unit, WCA kept many of the car accident victims, trauma cases and surgical patients that were complicated. Today, many of those patients are transferred to larger hospitals in Buffalo or Erie, Pa., that can provide specialized care. “We took care of patients who were hopefully going to survive,” Fitzgerald said. “They didn’t always survive. … A lot of the patients were locals, neighbors, friends, family.” While she cared for countless people during her career, some patients stay with her. While pregnant with one of her four children, there was a 13-year-old Canadian boy who slipped during a skiing trip in Ellicottville with his family and struck his head. The boy was braindead, and Fitzgerald remembered having to delicately work with the family to discuss organ donation. “I remember crying with the mother,” she said. “The mother actually made me cry. She was singing ‘Rock of Ages’ to her son as they were preparing to take him off the respirator. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that. That was probably the hardest of all of them that I can remember.” She moved from ICU to cardiology as it afforded her a better work schedule to raise her children. Whereas many patients in intensive care are bedridden, the cardiology department often requires getting patients up and moving around. A TRANSITION Fitzgerald believes the integration of WCA and UPMC toward the end of 2016 provided the Jamestown hospital with an important lifeline. “Switching over from a small community hospital when it was WCA, and then switching on to UPMC, we probably wouldn’t have survived as a small community hospital without that change,” she said. The level of care was enhanced by the integration. At the time, the Pittsburgh-based health care giant committed to providing at least $25 million to the local facility. In May 2017, a ground-breaking ceremony was held for a new women’s and maternity care center and inpatient adult and adolescent mental health units. “The care locally stayed the same,” Fitzgerald said. “I believe there was a lot of heart and compassion for patients, and then as the employees had to adjust to give that care, that was probably the biggest challenge.” AND NOW MORE TRANSITION When Fitzgerald took over the cardiac rehabilitation department in 2000, she knew it would be the last stop in her career. Despite having more than 40 years in the profession, there was always new training and dealing with computers. With a pulmonary rehab program about to open, she figured it was time to allow others to come in and take over. In January, she made the decision to set a retirement date. However, once that happened, she had a hard time talking about it, even to those she worked with. “I didn’t want to talk about it,” Fitzgerald said. “I didn’t start counting down the days until August.” Of course, there were some mixed feelings as her final day neared. When it did arrive on Aug. 19, she was surprised by her beloved co-workers with an open house where some of her previous cardiac rehab patients stopped by to wish her well. “It was very emotional,” she said. When she left UPMC Chautauqua for the last time, “It didn’t feel real to me. It kind of felt surreal, like I wasn’t really leaving for the last time. It kind of felt like, ‘I’ll be back in a couple weeks. I’m just taking a vacation.’” Fitzgerald lives with her husband, John. They have four children, Michael and Sean Fitzgerald, Michele Clark and Shannon Quackenbush, as well as seven grandchildren. Since retirement, she has babysat some of those grandchildren and has plans to go on vacation. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox %

Expect Demand For Senior Living Projects To Increase Multi-Fold In Non-Metro Cities: Ankur Gupta Ashiana Housing The Financial Express
Expect Demand For Senior Living Projects To Increase Multi-Fold In Non-Metro Cities: Ankur Gupta, Ashiana Housing – The Financial Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/expect-demand-for-senior-living-projects-to-increase-multi-fold-in-non-metro-cities-ankur-gupta-ashiana-housing-the-financial-express/ In an exclusive interview, Ankur Gupta of Ashiana Housing shares his views on changing homebuyer preferences in post-pandemic times, growth expectations for senior living projects, and what prompted them to foray into kid-centric homes. As the population of seniors has been steadily growing, the demand for senior living housing will continue to rise. And pioneers like us will scale up, says Ankur Gupta, JMD, Ashiana Housing. In an exclusive interview with Sanjeev Sinha, Mr Gupta shares his views on changing homebuyer preferences in post-pandemic times, growth expectations for senior living projects, and what prompted them to foray into kid-centric homes. Excerpts: Real estate, particularly the housing segment, is said to be doing well post the pandemic. Do you think the festive season will give the sector a further push? The festive season is a good time to buy or invest in the housing segment. We are witnessing satisfying growth in terms of business and festive seasons are adding into it. As mentioned, this festive season will likely bring cheers to millions as it comes after the two-year pandemic. Having the July-Sept period already witnessing stupendous growth, the upcoming quarters will continue to perform. The current inflation could be a worry for many. Despite the inflationary pressure, the current interest rate regime favors homebuyers, as the levels are still lower as compared to the peaks that we witnessed during the pre-pandemic levels. Hence, prospective homebuyers should enter the market and buy. With affordability remaining high, employment numbers are strong again favoring a buying phase. Has there been any impact of the pandemic on senior living housing? How is this segment doing currently & what is the future outlook? The pandemic has impacted all the sectors of economy, but post pandemic things changed to a great extent and interestingly, the demand for senior living housing has increased. As per a recent report by National Statistical Office (NSO)’s Elderly in India 2021, India’s elderly population (aged 60 and above) is projected to touch 194 million in 2031 from 138 million in 2021, a 41% increase over a decade. As the population of seniors has been steadily growing, the demand for senior living housing will continue to rise. And pioneers like us will scale up. The types of services and amenities on offer in these projects will continue to evolve as the industry will grow. We observe that metros cities are already witnessing a surge in such projects. However, in the longer run, suburbs and tier-II cities will also see healthy supply. Some of the tier-II cities include Bhiwadi, Coimbatore, Puducherry, Vadodara, Bhopal, Jaipur, Mysuru, Dehradun and Kasauli, among others. Metros where we have seen the supply are Chennai, Pune (Lavasa) and Bengaluru. We expect that over the next 4-5 years, the demand for senior living projects will increase multi-fold in non-metro cities. There are reasons behind this: Attractive financing options available, availability of land and plenty of space to build sprawling complexes have made these cities more attractive. And seniors love these open spaces. Although growth rates vary by region, there is a growing trend that a majority of seniors would prefer living in cities with low population densities. The trend of seniors moving into cities with low population densities is also contributing to this growth. It creates opportunities for developers to create new projects in these markets, where there is less competition. Medium to long-term market predictions suggest that as compared to metros, many more senior living communities would come up in these markets. What sets Ashiana Housing apart from other senior living facilities? What is your USP? Ashiana Housing is a pioneer in Senior Living Homes in the country, offering top-class facilities. We currently serve more than 1800 happy seniors across our three projects, in which we take care of everything for our residents – from an active and healthy lifestyle to healthy vegetarian meals, an active routine, and regular health check-ups. We’ve recently launched our most premium Senior Living Home yet – Ashiana Advik, with innovative and first-in-class ‘Active scapes’. Advik comes with spacious apartments as well as independent villas. With Advik, we aim to further revolutionize Senior Living in India. Advik is spread over 16.9 acres of lush green spaces and brings in new and innovative Active scapes which are designed to keep senior citizens active at all times. Retirement Life with Ashiana Senior Living is a whole different experience that you can’t get anywhere else. Our primarily focus is on providing ample facilities to our senior citizen residents. The facilities include taking care of one’s mental agility attained by befriending books in the library, having lively conversations with like-minded people or by attending classes for cooking, dancing, arts and more, keeping at bay the everyday worries and strife. All our Senior Living Homes are well laid out and well designed. Our locations are such that there is little to no pollution and a breath of fresh air always awaits our residents. We take care of everything from residents’ activity, routine, and social life to safety, security, and health. Ashiana Senior Living Homes give senior citizens a sense of independence while at the same time not compromising on their security. All our SLHs come with age-friendly design and amenities like – skid-resistant tiles, chamfered wall edges, grabrails in the bathroom, Night Lamp in the master bedroom, switches with LED indicators, flats fitted with Emergency Response System, wheelchair-accessible campus and flats, 24×7 ambulance, on-call doctors, pharmacy and utility stores, etc. What prompted Ashiana Housing to foray into kid-centric homes? Why is this concept gaining popularity in India? What are your future plans for this segment? With the increasing urbanization and growing nuclear families with working parents, there is a need for a space that provides safety and security to the children while parents are away to work and at the same time, exposes kids to several sports and co-curricular activities. At Ashiana we worked towards the need of the hour which has given rise to a new reality trend, i.e., kid-centric homes. Typically, a kid-centric home is a gated community which provides all the facilities that are needed for children’s development and their all-round growth. Ashiana kid-centric homes are a finest example of BehtarParvarishKaPata. The facilities provided here are made keeping in mind to nurture and empower children for their successful future. A special learning hub is provided here, where children develop multifaceted personalities. With the inclusion of world-class facilities to address core necessities related not just to proper infrastructure but other pivotal areas such as learning and talent enhancement, inculcating important moral values and learning to share with their fellow beings in addition to others, the kid-centric homes are designed to nurture the crucial years of a kid’s life. Our newest kid-centric homes project is Ashiana Amarah at sector-93, Gurugram. Amarah is spread over an area of 22 acres, of which 6.7 acres are lush green exteriors. The project is full of innovative and luxurious amenities for kids centered around four key elements i.e. Learning, Nurturing, Support & Care. Our all kid-centric projects are perfect blend of learning, growth, fun, and overall development altogether with kid-centric amenities. At Ashiana, we are known for providing a holistic fun, and nurturing environment to the growing kids which will ultimately lead them into becoming multi-faceted personalities and responsible citizens of tomorrow. What are you currently doing in view of the changing preferences of homebuyers and what are your future plans? Do you have any plans to foray into new cities as well? The pandemic has induced home buyers to reassess their preferences and this is driving some fascinating changes in their attitudes. Now, buyers are looking for a house which provides them with different types of facilities, amenities and enough space for working. At Ashiana Housing, we work towards different aspects i.e. well-designed concept home, lush green environment, vast open areas with fresh breeze. Our goal is to provide buyers a safe haven at a prime location. In terms of expansion, we have recently launched two new projects – in senior living we have launched Ashiana Advik with over 900 residential units, including 37 villas, at Bhiwadi & in kid-centric homes we have launched Ashiana Amarah in Gurugram, in which in phase one 224 units got sold off on the first day of launch. In the future, Ashiana intends to grow in the cities where we are already present, such as Pune, Chennai, Bhiwadi, and Gurgaon.

Meta Quest Pro Is An Expensive Gamble On The Future Of The Metaverse Yanko Design
Meta Quest Pro Is An Expensive Gamble On The Future Of The Metaverse Yanko Design
Meta Quest Pro Is An Expensive Gamble On The Future Of The Metaverse – Yanko Design https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/meta-quest-pro-is-an-expensive-gamble-on-the-future-of-the-metaverse-yanko-design/ Although almost everyone still refers to it as Facebook, changing its official name to Meta shows just how much the company, or at least CEO Mark Zuckerberg, believes that the metaverse is the future not just of computing but also of social. After a few months of hype and buzz, some of the narratives around the metaverse have died down a bit. There is even news that Meta itself is taking a step back to reflect on its grand plans. That’s not to say that Meta has given up on those ambitions, though, and it is, in fact, making an even bigger gamble on that future. It has just launched a new mixed reality headset that aims to take the metaverse beyond games and entertainment, but it carries a rather high price that almost makes that dream even more unreachable for most people. Designer: Meta The Meta Quest Pro is the latest headset to come from the company formerly known as Facebook, and it combines two of its major designs and strategies when it comes to virtual reality. Like the Quest 2, the Quest Pro is a standalone device that doesn’t require tethering to a PC that would limit the wearer’s mobility. Like the old Oculus Rift system, however, it boasts enough power and features that enable a wider variety of experiences and, in Meta’s words, enable the metaverse. It definitely looks refined and more streamlined than even the Meta Quest 2, so you finally won’t look ridiculous wearing one for “serious business.” It’s no longer front-heavy like almost all standalone VR headsets due to the battery being relocated to the back of the strap, creating a more balanced design. Pancake lenses also help make the entire assembly thinner while also providing an even better view of the wearer’s field of vision. More than just the design upgrade, however, the Meta Quest Pro also offers more power and flexibility in how it mixes the virtual and the real. Full-color outward-facing cameras, for example, will let you see the real world beyond the headset, allowing Meta’s system to seamlessly merge virtual objects with physical ones or vice versa. Inward-facing cameras, on the other hand, are able to track not only where your eyes are pointing but also your expressions that can be reflected on your avatar’s face. Even the new controllers themselves have their own cameras so that they can keep track of their location and position independently and more accurately. All of these do translate to a metaverse-oriented device that offers more flexibility and more options that go beyond the usual applications of VR and AR. In fact, Meta envisions the Quest Pro more as a productivity and work tool that can help you get your job done, no matter where you are in the physical world. All that power comes with a hefty price, though; $1,499, to be exact. That’s almost four times the price of the $399 Meta Quest 2, but it does also pack a lot more features. Still, it’s a pricey investment even for companies who might be able to afford it, especially for a metaverse future that few people can see.

More Screen, More Utility: The IPhone 14 Plus’ Appeal – Malay Mail https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/more-screen-more-utility-the-iphone-14-plus-appeal-malay-mail/ The iPhone 14 Plus might just be the better iPhone you didn’t know you wanted. — Picture by Erna Mahyuni Follow us on Instagram, subscribe to our Telegram channel and browser alerts for the latest news you need to know. By Erna Mahyuni Saturday, 15 Oct 2022 11:25 AM MYT KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 15 — The interesting thing about the iPhone mini’s brief existence is it demonstrated that sometimes customers don’t actually know what they want. “We want a small phone”, cried some very vocal users. Yet from sales figures it seems that most people wanted or were just really used to larger phones. Now is the iPhone 14 Plus the phone some people didn’t realise they wanted all this time? Larger phone, lighter feel It would be easy to just say the iPhone 14 Plus is a super-sized iPhone 14. There’s the same processor, an A15 that you saw on the iPhone 13 Pro models as well. Yet everything about it is bigger ― the 6.7-inch OLED display with its sharp 2778×1284 pixel resolution at 458 ppi is a big reason behind its price. It’s one of the biggest (yes) reasons to get the model as the only other large-display iPhone is the very powerful and very expensive iPhone 14 Pro Max. Sure, it doesn’t have the fancy Dynamic Island, variable refresh rate and ProMotion but unless you’ve actually used the iPhone 14 Pro before, it doesn’t feel like a big downgrade. What might also be appealing is the mere 203g of weight. Considering there’s nothing cheap-feeling about the phone’s construction, it makes for a pleasant hand feel and speaking from experience, heavy phones can feel like lead weights when using them for longer periods of time. Speaking of longer times, the iPhone 14 Plus manages to eke slightly longer times that the 14 Pro Max for ordinary usage. While I could stretch the 14 Pro Max to about 30 per cent by the end of the day, the iPhone 14 Plus would only reach the 30 per cent mark somewhere around 4pm the next day. It meant for other phones, I would dutifully charge them overnight but forgetting to charge the iPhone 14 Plus won’t hamper your day much. Performance is that old iPhone-consistent butter fluidity and unlike the iPhone 14 Pro’s quirks, the phone has proven to be stable without getting too hot during more demanding apps such as games like Genshin Impact. Like the iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Plus offers a decent camera with accurate colour and good detail even indoors. — Picture by Erna Mahyuni That camera What else can be said about the iPhone 14 Plus’ cameras that wasn’t said about the iPhone 14? It’s a solid set of cameras. Not as fancy as the iPhone 14 Pro 48MP main camera but the 12MP wide and 12MP ultra wide duo with 2x optical zoom are still a solid pair. I’d say the Photonic engine has improved the quality of iPhone 14 cameras across the board. Perhaps not enough to upgrade from an iPhone 13 model to an iPhone 14, but obvious enough. Though the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus don’t have the extra optical zoom that’s exclusively on the iPhone 14 Pro, they’re just as capable if you want to shoot video. Though you could argue that Sony’s new Pro models are giving Apple a good fight in the video stakes, what can’t be denied is that the better video camera and editing apps are more easily available on the App Store than Google Play. With other features such as Action mode that lets you take photos outdoors during more vigorous activity without needing an extra stabiliser such as a tripod or gimbal, there’s a lot of utility to squeeze out of the iPhone 14 Plus. While the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro Max both have the same size display, the 14 Plus is much lighter and easier to carry around. — Picture by Erna Mahyuni A good or bad proposition? As much as the iPhone 14 Pro models are great phones, they’re not for everyone and they were never meant to be. The iPhones offer good performance, premium build and the key to Apple’s inviting walled garden that it calls an ecosystem. Yes, the argument is that Android phones are cutting-edge feature-wise and each year, the Samsung Flip phones keep getting almost cool enough for me to get one. If you want the latest in phone tech, Huawei and Samsung still lead while Apple is content to wait, see and refine further, while charging a lot more for it. Still, at least Apple has finally got onboard with repairability so if you do damage your new iPhone it will be easier to fix, especially now they’ve made parts like the glass back easier to remove and replace. Get the iPhone 14 Plus for the larger screen. Get it for the portability and much better battery. Everything else, like the new Crash Detection sensor is a bonus. The iPhone 14 Plus is available now starting at RM4,699 at your usual Apple retail store in six colours (blue, purple, midnight, starlight, and Product Red) and 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options.

Farm Bill, Crypto Priorities For Next Term | News, Sports, Jobs – Timesobserver.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/farm-bill-crypto-priorities-for-next-term-news-sports-jobs-timesobserver-com/ The status of a proposal for the downtown riverfront was part of what brought Congressman Glenn Thompson to Warren on Monday. “I thought it was a great project,” he said of the development that has taken place in the former Loranger building. Thompson said he put an earmark in for $1.5 million in dedicated funding for the downtown riverfront, citing significant local investment in that area. He said he put an earmark in for $1.5 million in dedicated funding for the downtown riverfront, citing significant local investment in that area. “I’m trying to be very discerning with the projects I support,” he said. “(I was) disappointed when it didn’t make the final cut in this year’s appropriation.” Thompson said he is still looking for funding for the project and said that was part of why he was in Warren Monday. “I want to be optimistic anyways,” he said. “Good projects take forever.” Looking ahead to the 118th Congress, the farm bill and cryptocurrency regulations are shaping up as priorities for the next two years. Thompson does have a Democratic challenger in next month’s election but the seat is safely red. Thompson’s closest election was his initial election in 2008 which he carried by 16 points. In 2020, he carried the district by nearly 50 points. As the current ranking Republican member on the House Agriculture Committee, he’s got his eyes set on a potential chairmanship should the Republicans take back the majority in the House. That makes his priorities pretty easy. “For me, obviously the Farm Bill,” he said. According to the Congressional Research Service, that bill spans multiple years and “governs an array of agricultural and food programs. It provides an opportunity for policymakers to comprehensively and periodically address agricultural and food issues.” The bill, per the CRS, typically focuses on “farm commodity program support for a handful of staple commodities– corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, rice, peanuts, dairy, and sugar.” Thompson said the current iteration is set to expire in Sept. 2023 and called it the “single most important piece of legislation that impacts rural America.” He said there are three options – let it expire which he called “not an option” as it would take farm regulations back to the era of the Dust Bowl; extend the current bill which is just “kicking the can” or institute a new bill which is the “only option.” “We’re way behind,” he stressed. “Under Democratic leadership we have not been doing our due diligence. If given the opportunity to chair, we’ll change that come January. It’s going to be pretty intense.” The other major legislative priority might not sound like an agricultural issue at all – regulations regarding crypto-currency. He explained why that issue is before the Ag Committee – when a crypto-currency is first created, it is traded and overseen by the Securities and Exchange Commission; but once it is traded, it is considered a commodity, which brings it under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture. “There’s an urgency,” he said, “with putting some guidelines, legislative guardrails around crypto-currency.” He’s introduced legislation – the Digital Commodity Exchange Act that, he said, would “do no harm, protect people in the marketplace” while also fostering innovation with the underlying technology. “Blockchain… it will be transformational to our economy,” he said, explaining that countries ranging in size from China to Malta are developing these rules. “The US is way behind,” he said, “but the US is where people want to do business.” The legislation, he said, would still allow state regulation as many states have already done but would implement a national standard. Failing to tackle this issue, he said, could result in the nation losing its “competitive space in the world economy…. Let’s keep it simple and do what we need to do.” His proposal, he said, “is close” and he hopes it is moved out of committee this fall. “(It) hasn’t happened yet,” he said, but the effort is “further along than it has been in the past.” Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Aberdeen Central Wins Fifth-Straight Game Against Yankton To Go To 5-3 – AberdeenNews.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/aberdeen-central-wins-fifth-straight-game-against-yankton-to-go-to-5-3-aberdeennews-com/ It’s hard to find an answer for the monster named Brenden Begeman, and Britton/Hecla didn’t discover it Friday night at Dacotah Bank Stadium. That just means the Braves are in good company. Begeman, the Wolverines senior running back and linebacker, rolled up roughly 300 yards in rushing to lead Herreid/Selby Area to a 50-0 victory in high school football action. Here are three takeaways from the game. Begeman’s long touchdown runs Begeman scored on runs of 19, 53, 94 and 43 yards to lead the offense. Herreid/Selby Area coach Clayton Randall suspected the effort put Begeman over 2,000 yards rushing on the season and the Wolverines over 3,000 yards as a team. Randall said Begeman has a rare combination of speed, strength agility for the Class 9B level, and once he gets beyond the line of scrimmage he has moves and power to break tackles. That was apparent Friday night. Don’t forget the offensive line The offensive line opens the holes to get Begeman to the second level. Randall said sophomore Kaden Sayler is in his first year as a starter at center and has had a great season. And then there are offensive linemen Hunter Friend and Collin Tisdall. All three win one-on-one battles to get Begeman loose, Randall said. “At this level, they’re as good as it gets,” he said. Friend said the success doesn’t come without doing some homework. He said he and others on the team spend three to four hours a week looking at film to know what to expect and how defenders move. He said the perfect regular season is nice, but hopes the most exciting part of the season is still to come. Britton/Hecla gambles with onside kick to open the game The Braves attempted an onside kick to open the game, trying to catch Herreid/Selby off guard. But the Wolverines recovered and made the most of it. Moments later, Begeman scored his first touchdown. After the kickoff, Britton/Hecla couldn’t move the ball and had to punt. Herreid/Selby again took over with good field position, and Begeman scored from 52 yards out to make it 16-0. After the Braves fumbled, Herreid/Selby Area quarterback Tray Hettick found wide receiver Cole Zabel from 19 yards out to make it 24-0. Britton/Hecla backed the Wolverines up inside their own one-yard line with an excellent punt. But Herreid/Selby Area drew the defense offsides to get five easy yards. On the next play, Begeman erased any doubt about the game’s outcome racing 94 yards into the north end zone. Randall said the Wolverines goals on the season were go win a conference title, go 8-0 in the regular season and win a state title. Two down, one to go. Herreid/Selby Area is assured of being the top seed in 9B. Britton finished the regular season 4-4. Aberdeen Central uses running game to thump Yankton Aberdeen Central used a potent rushing attack to defeat Yankton Bucks 29-7 at Friday night at Crane-Youngworth Field in Yankton. Central improves to 5-3 on the season, while Yankton falls to 4-4. The Golden Eagles will likely be the No. 3 seed in the Class 11AA playoffs. They have won five staight. “The two things we had to do were stop the ball and we had to score,” Bucks head coach Brady Muth said. “We failed on both of those. It’s disappointing when you don’t reach your goals and objectives. But we still have football to play.” Golden Eagles running back Karson Carda was one of Aberdeen Central’s key difference-makers. With Aberdeen Central leading 8-7 at halftime, Carda ran through the Bucks defense in the second half, scoring on touchdown runs of 54 and 34 yards to give the Eagles a 22-7 lead. “With their run game, they’ve got so much of a surface area,” Muth said. “They’re going to have an open gap somewhere. We just have to beat them to the punch and get a backer or get ahead in that gap. We were getting caught up and we’re triggering fast enough. We’ve got to play with more confidence (defensively).” Yankton’s defense stayed with it and forced a stop on the Golden Eagles’ next drive. Central faced a fourth and six from the Bucks’ 19-yard line. The defense stopped Central quarterback Dustin Hermansen on the play. A Central defense that had given up 10 total points the last three games was stout against the Bucks. Yankton had success moving the football between the twenties in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles hunkered down and stopped the Bucks on fourth down in Golden Eagles territory on Yankton’s first two drives in the quarter. “(Their defense was) ‘bend don’t break’,” Muth said. “We couldn’t get over the top. Once we had to get away from the run, and we did that to ourselves, we put ourselves in a position where we had to score points. You have to go to the pass game, and they’ve got athletes back there.” The Golden Eagles put the game away with 6:06 remaining as they veered away from their run game. Hermansen found wide receiver Drew Salfrank for a 65-yard score to give the Golden Eagles a 29-7 lead. Pierre 35, Tea Area 30: Lincoln Kienholz threw for 256 yards with three touchdowns and ran for 205 yards with two more scores as the Governors beat Tea in a battle of undefeated Class 11AA teams. Brecken Krueger had 71 yards receiving with a touchdown and Jayden Wiebe 47 and a touchdown. For Tea, Maddix Slykhuis threw for 148 yards with two touchdowns — one to Parker Mulder and the other to Chase Van Tol. Van Tol ran for 63 yards with a rushing TD and Keegan DeYoung ran for 65 yards with a touchdown. Next: Pierre (8-0) visits Douglas; Tea (7-1) visits Watertown. Mountains Of Good Spirit | News, Sports, Jobs – Parkersburg News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/mountains-of-good-spirit-news-sports-jobs-parkersburg-news/ I got to take a vacation recently — a few times zones away, to a place where the pools are still open. It was nice, though it seems I missed a few good leaf-peeping days. But during the trip, our group of traveling friends stopped at a pool party hosted by someone we knew from our days at West Virginia University. We weren’t the only guests there, of course, but we might have been the most enthusiastic about jumping into water that was already deemed too cold by the locals. (It’s a funny thing to look around and realize ‘Whoops, only West Virginians still in the pool.’ Everyone else is out, wrapped up and huddled around the fire pit.) Once we dried off, one of our hosts was talking to a co-worker about the set of patio furniture that was pushed off to the side, and they came to an agreement. Then the receiver of the furniture said “OK, how am I going to get this all into my RAV4?” Without discussion or hesitation, each of the Mountain State residents walked over, picked up a piece of furniture and then walked out to the driveway, where we used our expertise to fit an entire patio set — cushions and all — into her vehicle. She watched us open-mouthed and then said, with genuine curiosity “Why are you helping me?” It struck me as such an odd question. Why wouldn’t we help? Then I looked around and realized, no one else had volunteered. No one else had even come out to the driveway to offer moral support. In fact, when we walked back around the corner, one of the guests was guiltily folding towels and placing them neatly on a ledge, declaring “I’m helping!” But the receiver of the furniture again turned to us and said “seriously, why did you help me? Thank you.” One of our crew sheepishly scuffed his feet and said “it’s what we do.” Yes, I thought. There it is. It’s just part of who we are; and I was raised believing that was part of what people knew about West Virginians. We help. We figure it out. In fact, it seems, our helpful nature and ingenuity were quite a surprise. What people think they know of us these days is dramatically different from what we here in the state tend to think of ourselves. Particularly farther away from West Virginia (again, this particular interaction was happening in the Pacific time zone) many people form their opinions of us based on our more attention-getting elected officials, what they read of us in the news, and the impression they get from those who claim to represent the Mountain State on social media. Blech. We can’t all travel to meet people in person and change minds, but we can start to work toward changing those who are creating a false impression of West Virginia on our behalf. We were brought up to be the kinds of people who can figure out how to get an entire patio set crammed into the back of a RAV4, for goodness sake. Surely we can figure this one out, too. *** And because I know the people who live in this valley are the kinds of people who help, I’m looking forward to seeing some of you this weekend at the Chick Crites Annual Veterans Food Drive, here at the News and Sentinel parking lot, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. Donations of non-perishable foods and hygiene items will benefit the Old Man Rivers and Disabled American Veterans Wood County Chapter 32 food pantries. Weekly Business News Roundup At 10:00 Am On 15th October 2022 – The Financial Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/weekly-business-news-roundup-at-1000-am-on-15th-october-2022-the-financial-express/ Let’s begin. The government will seek to decriminalise a wide gamut of economic offences through a new Bill to be introduced in the winter session of Parliament, official sources told FE this week. As many as 110 archaic – and at times bizarre — provisions in 35 laws, relating to 16 ministries and departments, will be axed or amended in one of the biggest drives ever, the sources added. The draft Bill is being vetted by the law ministry. The department for the promotion of industry and internal trade, which is spearheading this initiative, is planning these comprehensive amendments in a bid to ensure greater ease of doing business for firms and ease of living for individuals. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday, said his government has so far scrapped about 2,000 archaic laws from the British era that required businessmen to be sent to jail over minor issues. Next up, Industry. The Union cabinet has approved a one-time grant of Rs 22,000 crore to three oil marketing companies – Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation – to reduce cost pressures and cover the last two years’ losses on selling LPG in domestic market. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the LPG prices rose 300 per cent between June 2020 and June 2022. The grant will aid the fuel retailers to tackle the under-recoveries that surfaced during this two-year period, he said at the briefing after the Cabinet meeting. The grant comes as the LPG prices were not increased in tandem with the soaring costs, and the cost increase was not fully passed on to the domestic LPG consumers. The domestic LPG prices have risen by 72 per cent during the two-year period. This led to the three public sector undertaking (PSU) oil companies incurring significant losses vis-a-vis market prices. The one-time Rs 22,000 grant is being given to insulate the domestic LPG consumers from the cost increase, Thakur said at the briefing. Moving on. According to the “Master Direction” by the Reserve Bank of India, credit card issuers can report an account as “past due” to credit information agencies or levy any penalty only if the credit card account remains “past due” for over 3 days. “Card-issuers shall report a credit card account as ‘past due’ to credit information companies or levy penal charges, viz. late payment charges and other related charges, if any, only when a credit card account remains ‘past due’ for more than three days,” says RBI’s Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022. “The number of ‘days past due’ and late payment charges shall, however, be computed from the payment due date mentioned in the credit card statement, as specified under the regulatory instructions on ‘Prudential norms on Income Recognition, Asset Classification and Provisioning pertaining to Advances’ amended from time to time,” it adds. According to the RBI’s master direction, penal interest, late payment charges and other related charges can be levied only on the outstanding amount after the due date and not on the total amount. In other news, Pan masala and gutkha companies will likely face increased scrutiny and audits as the governments step up efforts to plug tax evasion by them. However, a plan to levy Goods and Services Tax on them on the basis of installed manufacturing capacity may be dropped. In May 2021, the GST Council set up a group of ministers, led by Odisha finance minister Niranjan Pujari, to examine the feasibility of levying GST on products such as pan masala and gutkha, based on the installed capacity of the units, rather than their actual production. The move was in the backdrop of a decline in revenues from these industries reported by many states after the introduction of GST in July, 2017. Tax authorities have found large-scale tax evasion by the units via under-reporting of output. Lastly, some updates on 5G services. Almost a week after the launch of 5G services – in eight cities by Bharti Airtel and beta testing by Reliance Jio in the four metros – all is not well as far as the quality and user experience of the services are concerned, leading the government to intervene in the matter. In a first-of-its-kind exercise, the secretaries of the department of telecommunications and ministry of electronics and IT, jointly called a meeting of all handset makers like Apple, Samsung, Oppo, Vivo and others as well as telecom operators Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea this week. The agenda of the meeting was threefold: one, ask the telcos about the readiness of their networks so that handsets can be tuned to them; two, find out from the handset makers regarding the status of software upgrades which are required in the 5G-enabled phones; and lastly, prioritise software upgrades so that early adoption of 5G can happen in the country.

EveryRealm has collaborated with Hometopia to launch a home design game on Roblox. Dubbed the metaverse “game for adults”, Hometopia will allow users to build their ideal homes and communities alongside their friends. Everyrealm is a metaverse real estate company engaged in building virtual buildings in immersive 3D worlds. The company is backed by some of the leading web3 venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), which led its $60 million fundraising in February. Other notable backers include Coinbase, the Weeknd, Actor Will Smith and US rapper Nas, among others. EveryRealm claims that Hometopia is the world’s first mainstream metaverse game for home design, building and renovating virtual real estate. Axie Infinity, the world’s biggest metaverse NFT game based on the market cap of its native token $AXS allows players to build structures and communities. Based on Everyrealm’s description of Hometopia, the game allows users to build ideal homes, not just structures created to boost gaming experiences. “Hometopia will capture those looking for a more realistic home design and world creation game as they age out of the homebuilding games they loved as a kid. Hometopia stands to become this generation’s The Sims, one of the best-selling PC games of all time, which sold more than 11 million copies generating more than $5 billion in revenue,” says Alex Ahlund, founder and developer of Hometopia. The games gaming concept is closer to popular Roblox-based home design games Bloxburg— with over 5 billion visits and 11 million likes since 2015, and Brookhaven— which regularly clocks 450,000+ concurrent users. Janine Yorio, CEO of Everyrealm, said, “As a gamified combination of Pinterest, Houzz and Wayfair, Hometopia is poised to capture those looking for more adult-versions of Roblox interior design games they grew to love as children, and will particularly appeal to a female demographic that has been overlooked by most metaverse gaming projects but which represents a disproportionate amount of spending power.”  EveryRealm is one of the largest metaverse real estate holders on Decentraland, Axie Infinity and The Sandbox. Some of its notable virtual real estate projects include Fantasy Islands and The Row. Stay up to date: Google News Twitter Telegram LinkedIn Facebook TikTok

Crypto Scam Victims Seek To Hold Coinbase Responsible For Losses The Washington Post
Crypto Scam Victims Seek To Hold Coinbase Responsible For Losses The Washington Post
Crypto Scam Victims Seek To Hold Coinbase Responsible For Losses – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/crypto-scam-victims-seek-to-hold-coinbase-responsible-for-losses-the-washington-post/ Over the past year, thousands of people have lost tens, if not hundreds, of millions in cryptocurrency when gangs of sophisticated scammers whisked their money out of their accounts, which are managed by an app from the publicly traded cryptocurrency giant Coinbase. Now those victims are fighting back. Nearly 100 people are trying to hold Coinbase accountable, saying the company didn’t do enough to protect them. Scam victims says they notified the company, begging it to fix defects in its Coinbase Wallet software that had allowed the victims unknowingly to grant the scammers access to their accounts. The requests were to no avail, scam victims say. “They’re trying to be a financial institution without the infrastructure to back it up,” said Eric Rosen, a lawyer at Roche Freedman representing some 96 victims in the arbitration demand, which is akin to a lawsuit, filed against Coinbase. “There were no procedures in place to stop these frauds,” Rosen said. “Of course, scammers quickly picked up on this, and directed victims to download the Coinbase Wallet.” Many of the victims lost their life savings. The demand says that the rules requiring banks to reimburse debit-card users for unauthorized transfers also should apply to Coinbase’s customers. “Coinbase is committed to protecting its customers from scams, fraud, and other crimes and has invested significant resources in protecting users against liquidity mining scams,” company spokeswoman Lisa Johnson said, responding to the arbitration demand. “A customer’s activities on Coinbase Wallet, including managing the wallet’s private security keys and access to the wallet’s contents, are exclusively controlled by the customer, not Coinbase,” Johnson continued, noting that the company offers many products so that consumers “can choose the products that are best for them.” The arbitration could be the start of a reckoning over whether crypto’s ideology of self-reliance and software-driven governance can survive contact with the highly regulated mainstream financial system. If the arbitration demand results in an order that Coinbase reimburse its customers, it provides the possibility of a way forward for the victims of a massive ongoing scam that The Washington Post reported in April had already caused thousands of victims more than $60 million of losses. The individuals participating in the Coinbase arbitration demand, some of whom were scammed as late as this August, say they lost more than $21 million total. Many were forced by Coinbase Wallet’s terms of service to turn to arbitration instead of challenging them through the U.S. courts. The decision of the arbitrator won’t set a formal legal precedent, but will help answer one of the top questions of the burgeoning crypto era: Do the existing rules of the financial system apply to cryptocurrency companies? Unlike other scams in which someone is fooled into sending money somewhere, in this scheme, the individuals’ money was stolen straight out of their accounts. After meeting the victims through social media, dating apps or wrong-number texts, the scammers said high returns were available through “liquidity mining”; a would-be investor just had to buy a “mining certificate,” clicking through a prompt in Coinbase Wallet that said “confirm payment.” The certificate wasn’t real, and the process wasn’t really a payment. Clicking on these innocuous-looking vouchers would record a single line of computer code granting the scammers permission to steal crypto deposited into an account weeks or months later. Coinbase “had no procedures in place to stop these frauds,” Rosen said. “They didn’t even appear to try. Of course, scammers quickly picked up on this, and literally directed victims to download the Coinbase Wallet.” The victims tell similar tales: The scammer would spend weeks egging them on to invest more, until one day their money was gone. A victim advocacy group calls it a “pig butchering” scam in which the victims’ accounts are fattened like hogs for slaughter. Reports from ProPublica and Vice say that at least some of the front-line scammers are themselves victims of human trafficking in Southeast Asia, forced to work under threats of violence. This week, the investor protection director in the state of Delaware issued a cease-and-desist order against more than 15 people it believes are “involved or working in conjunction with” those who contacted alleged victims. But some of those who lost money say they see the perpetrators as only part of the story. “I put the blame on Coinbase far more than even the scammers, because the scammers couldn’t have been effective without Coinbase,” James Osbun, who says he lost $77,000 to the scam, said in an interview. The level of legitimacy conferred by a company such as Coinbase combined with a lack of red flags caused Osbun to proceed, he said, when he otherwise would have stopped. “At minimum, let me know what my account is doing,” Osbun said, referring to the stealth smart contract. ‘You’re putting your funds at risk: continue? Yes or no?’ They didn’t even do that,” he added. In the past few months, Coinbase adjusted the warnings it presents in its wallet app, now showing that a website is requesting permission to withdraw a huge sum of dollars from an account. (A wallet application inside Coinbase’s main app, however, appears still to be vulnerable; it does not make clear that signing a smart contract could let a website access someone’s entire balance.) For years, regulators paid relatively little attention to crypto. But as its popularity with everyday Americans skyrocketed in 2020, claims of fraud soared, too, as borderless digital money turned into a gold rush for overseas thieves, including North Korea’s government. Meanwhile, state and federal regulators have taken action against some firms. The Securities and Exchange Commission has begun pursuing cases against certain cryptocurrency companies and promoters, saying they violated securities laws. The cryptocurrency industry has fought back, arguing that those laws, which normally apply to stocks, shouldn’t be applied to decentralized digital currencies and tokens. Experts think the significance of the Coinbase case goes well beyond these victims. “If arbitrators find for these plaintiffs, that means anyone who’s lost money in a crypto scam is going to be calling a lawyer,” said Lee Reiners, policy director at the Duke Financial Economics Center and a fellow at Duke Law who has researched crypto and financial scams.

Expected to be effective later this fall, the CSA will become an independently-managed subsidiary of US Squash, a new corporate structure that will formally affiliate squash’s national governing body and its collegiate governing body, creating a united pathway to sustained success for squash on campus and robust growth for squash overall. “College squash is a central and critical part of the squash experience in the U.S.,” noted Kevin Klipstein, President & CEO of US Squash in making the announcement. “Reducing all barriers to working closely with CSA for the long term will make each organization more effective. As junior squash continues to grow, opportunities to compete at the collegiate level need to as well. Colleges and universities also have some of the largest facilities in the country, and the more people who are introduced to squash during college, whether casually, intramurally, club or otherwise benefits everyone. I couldn’t be happier to have the opportunity to increase our already close collaboration with CSA, and to have the Specter Center also formally be the home of college squash just makes sense.” “College squash—with its inclusive nature, talented student-athletes, unique team format, and accompanying passion of school pride—is a shining light in the squash community,” added David Poolman, CSA Executive Director and League Commissioner. “We have benefitted from US Squash’s leadership and assistance over the past decade, and we are very enthusiastic about what lies ahead through our formal partnership. We are confident that a vibrant college squash scene helps ensure the future of the sport.” Growing collegiate squash is one core pillar of US Squash’s forward plan and overarching long-term strategy. Specifically, US Squash has committed to supporting the further development of squash on campus and partnering closely with CSA to increase the number of college varsity teams by 30%, grow emerging and club programs by 100%, and help secure NCAA affiliation. This new arrangement will accelerate these goals through increased collaboration, more efficient utilization of resources, and professionalized and targeted fundraising strategies. Through this effort, US Squash and CSA will embark on an exciting next chapter for collegiate squash, one defined by growth, access, and excellence across college campuses nationwide. US Squash has provided vital support to CSA for over ten years and has served as its fiscal sponsor since 2017 when the CSA was formally incorporated. As has been the case since 2017, CSA’s governing board will continue to independently oversee the organization, setting its strategic plan, establishing and monitoring rules of play, and managing the CSA brand. Each organization will nominate an individual to serve on the other’s respective Board of Directors to ensure ongoing and mutual representation in the governance structure. Poolman will be welcomed onto US Squash’s management team, working closely with Klipstein, and will continue to oversee all CSA’s day-to-day operations. The Boards of Directors of US Squash and CSA both met at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center this week during the U.S. Open Squash Championships to formalize the joint path forward. This US Squash-CSA alliance demonstrates the momentum building behind a unified vision focused on the sport’s growth at every level and highlights an exciting year ahead. The 100th season of intercollegiate team squash commences this fall, a milestone CSA and US Squash will be celebrating throughout this academic year. In addition, squash competition in college is compelling at all levels—junior players aspire to thrive in the college squash experience, current players continue to set standards of excellence, new players learn to play every year, and CSA alumni are making their mark in the professional game. US Squash and CSA are energized to launch the next century of college squash together. About the College Squash Association The College Squash Association is the official governing body for intercollegiate squash in the United States. CSA membership includes 66 varsity teams—32 women’s teams and 34 men’s teams—and approximately 60 women’s, men’s, and co-ed club teams. Harvard University is the defending National Collegiate Women’s and Men’s Team Champions, while the Georgetown University men and Boston College women won the inaugural National Club Team Championships last season. Cornell University’s Sivasangari Subramaniam and Harvard University’s Victor Crouin won the National Collegiate Individual Championships in 2022. CSA’s mission is to foster national intercollegiate squash competition in service to elevating the values of sportsmanship, integrity and fair-play for all student-athletes, coaches, and their affiliated institutions, encouraging academic excellence and increasing the opportunities to play college squash. About US Squash US Squash is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which serves as the only national governing body and membership organization for the sport in the United States. Founded in 1904 and headquartered in New York City, it is a member of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the Pan American Squash Federation and the World Squash Federation. US Squash’s mission is to lead squash’s growth and development by increasing access and awareness, supporting meaningful lifelong engagement in the sport, and encouraging sportsmanship while achieving competitive excellence at the highest levels. US Squash’s vision is to be the best national sports governing body in the United States. In pursuing this aspiration, we envision people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds across the country enjoying squash, playing the game with a positive spirit, and participating in programs that foster camaraderie, facilitate competition, and encourage healthy lifestyles. We create and promote opportunities to become part of an ever-broadening squash community, one widely known to value excellence, diversity, fair-play and sportsmanship. We continually invest in the development of the sport to sustain growth, broaden access, and we embrace innovation. We support teaching professionals and coaches in their effort to engage and mentor players during their lifelong involvement in the sport. We operate the world’s preeminent squash facility serving as a national center of excellence and provide all the resources required to train and coach elite athletes who excel in competition and proudly represent their country.

Kremlin Invites Residents In Occupied Kherson To Take ‘Vacation’ In Russia – Newsweek https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/kremlin-invites-residents-in-occupied-kherson-to-take-vacation-in-russia-newsweek/ The Kremlin-backed administration of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Kherson region is offering residents “vacation” to Russia amid the lingering war and concerns over efforts to “Russify” Ukrainians. The Russian-recognized regional administration of Kherson announced in a Telegram post last week that it has set up a hotline for “children and their parents, as well as everyone who wants” to take a holiday. Located in southern Ukraine, Kherson has seen intense fighting as Ukrainian forces seek to push out the Russian military. The hotline implementation followed reports of Russia forcibly migrating Ukrainians from occupied territories. Volodymyr Saldo, the former Kherson mayor who the Kremlin has installed as head of the occupied region, told the Russian state-run news agency TASS on Friday that most residents were staying put despite having the option to leave the region’s daily rocket fire. He said only about 350 residents had asked for help leaving. A car without wheels, which was carjacked by Russians soldiers, stands on bricks in front of the destroyed Village Council on September 27, 2022, in Vysokopillia, Ukraine. Russian-backed authorities in the Kherson region are offering vacations to residents wanting a break from the war. Yurii Tynnyi/Getty Images Saldo said on Thursday in a Telegram post that he was organizing for residents to travel to Russia “for recreation and study,” or to “protect themselves from the consequences of missile strikes.” The post acknowledged that the region continued to be contested despite Russian President Vladimir Putin saying in September that Kherson was among four regions of Ukraine that had voted to join Russia, a notion that was rejected in a lopsided United Nations General Assembly vote. Kirill Stremousov, Saldo’s deputy, earlier on Telegram downplayed Kherson residents leaving the region, saying it didn’t amount to an evacuation. But on Friday, Stremousov took a different tone, encouraging residents to remain calm and take “a humanitarian trip to rest and [recuperate] in the Russian Federation.” “It’s no secret that the shelling of the Kherson region is dangerous primarily for the civilian population,” he said in the post Friday. Since Putin launched Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, international monitors and Ukrainian officials reported that Ukrainian citizens caught in occupied areas have been forced to relocate to Russia, which the Kremlin has denied. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based think tank, has previously published research on the Kremlin’s efforts to strip Ukrainians of their cultural identity. “Russian authorities are continuing to engage in “Russification” social programming schemes that target Ukrainian children,” the think tank on Friday found in its research. The ISW cited reports from local media and Ukrainian officials that Russia was deporting children, some orphans, from occupied regions. The deportations have been described by Russian officials as “children’s trips” and “further education” programs, according to the the group’s research. Teenagers in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol are also being pressured to join an anti-Ukrainian “Youth Guard” paramilitary group, the ISW added. Newsweek has reached out to the Ukrainian Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories for comment. %

Three IDEA Permian Basin Schools Listed Amongst Healthiest Schools In The Nation – KOSA https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/three-idea-permian-basin-schools-listed-amongst-healthiest-schools-in-the-nation-kosa/ MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) – Three idea schools in Midland and Odessa received distinctions for most healthy schools in the nation. IDEA schools have worked hard to ensure students are living healthy lifestyles while on their campuses. There are three components to making the list of healthy schools… food… fitness… and installing future healthy habits. IDEA Travis Academy, IDEA Yukon Academy and College Preparatory located in Midland and Odessa earned a spot on the Alliance for a Healthier Generations Americans Healthiest Schools list. “We’re just really proud of our campus, I mean we’ve been here for three years and we’ve become nationally recognized for being a healthy campus,” said Executive Principal Hailey McCarthy. “That’s amazing and it says that not only are we helping educate our kids but we’re making sure they live healthy lives.” In 2014 IDEA launched a healthy kids here program aimed at making them one of the healthiest districts in the nation. “We’re so happy that students are opting to put down the chips and pick up the broccoli instead, men making the choices now at such a young age is going to translate to them making fantastic choices later on in their lives,” said Assistant Principal Nicodeimus Martinez. At IDEA Travis the cafeteria is filled with healthy options for the students and during P.E. class the children even wear heart rate monitors. “I think there’s this really interesting thing that we’ve been able to dispel that being healthy doesn’t necessarily have to mean not tasty,” said Martinez. “Scholars are excited to be able to choose their food options here on campus and they are excited to taste the different food items.” Copyright 2022 KOSA. Urtopia Carbon E-Bike Review: The Most Advanced Bike In Existence Is Also A Ton Of Fun – Windows Central https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/urtopia-carbon-e-bike-review-the-most-advanced-bike-in-existence-is-also-a-ton-of-fun-windows-central/ Urtopia packs a computer (“smartbar”), GPS, 4G LTE, and an app all with a peddle-assisted ultra-light carbon fiber frame making it the most technologically advanced bike you can buy today. If you’re into tech and want to get outside, this is your ride. For Super light frame (33lbs) Smartbar, GPS, LTE, blinkers, lights, and tons of features Competitively priced Very comfortable Easy setup and assembly Against Expensive for average people Frame scratches easily New, untested company This review is unconventional for Windows Central, but there is some overlap for those who love technology and always-connected 4G LTE devices, like me. When Urtopia offered to send me its new e-bike, I rolled my eyes until I read the specs and what it could do. I was impressed and had no idea that so much could be tucked into a lightweight e-bike while also being absurdly simple to use. I’ve been using the Urtopia Carbon E-bike for the last month, and if you need an excellent road city bike and love gadgets, I can easily recommend it. It’s simply fun, cool, and innovative.   It’s the first and likely the last e-bike you’ll ever need. Urtopia Carbon E-bike: Price, specs, and availability The big, but light box the Urtopia E-bike ships in.  (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) The Urtopia Carbon E-bike is produced by Urtopia, based out of Hong Kong, with manufacturing in China. The company is new and began crowdsourcing for its carbon e-bike in 2021 via IndieGoGo, but you can now purchase it outright from its website for $2,799. There is a 2-year warranty (opens in new tab) on the bike and components (except wear and tear) and a 14-day free return period. Urtopia has teamed up with numerous regional bicycle shops in California, New York, and other states where you can see one in person and test-ride it (opens in new tab). More shops are expected to sign on as well. The company ships the Urtopia Carbon E-bike to the United States and Germany, with more markets to follow. The total shipping weight of the bike, packaging and support materials is 64lbs (29kg), although the bike itself is only 33lbs (15kg) due to most of the frame being carbon fiber. There are three color choices to choose from including Sirius (used here), Lyra (nearly all black), and Midnight in Paris (the most colorful).  The bike is 90 percent assembled already. (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) Being a street/urban bike, the front fork is rigid with no shocks and can handle a total rider weight of 240lbs (110kg). It has a Class 1 e-bike classification. The motor is a 250-watt rear-hub single-gear Gates Carbon belt drive with a maximum speed of 20mph (32km) in the US and 16mph (25.7km) in the EU. The battery is a removable 36V 10Ah, 360Wh from Samsung that also locks in place. Braking of the Kenda Kwest 700 x 35c puncture-resistant tires is handled by front and rear dual-piston hydraulic disc brakes. The range of the Urtopia Carbon E-bike is 30 to 80 miles depending on the speed of the motor used for travel. The total charge time is 2.5 hours. (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) The built-in smart headset houses a dot-matrix display, a 3W speaker, dual microphones, a front 100-lumen StVZO headlight, and vibration motors (for alerts). Safety features include GPS tracking (Find My Bike), movement alerts (Alarm), thumbprint unlock, a digital bell, low battery alert, tail light with projected turn indicator lights, and a locking battery pack. Software, including firmware updates, occur over local Wi-Fi and are mediated by the Urtopia app available on iOS and Android. Users get a free year of eSIM always-connected service with purchase, after which it costs $29 per year. The model we reviewed is one of the latest versions with multiple revisions to the hardware, including a brighter dot-matrix display, louder speakers, and better-tuned microphones. Urtopia Carbon E-bike: What I like The rear light in action. (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) Looking at the Urtopia and this bike certainly looks unique. In fact, it was designed by former BMW I series designer Mathis Heller. He reportedly found inspiration for the design via a Möbius strip (a mathematical object with a non-orientable surface). Getting a bike “in the mail” is always an experience, but Urtopia ships the carbon e-bike 90 percent already assembled. Even the FedEx shippers were shocked at how light the box was when removing it from the truck, as e-bikes can range up to 70lbs (31.7kg). Some of the settings in the Urtopia app (Android). (Image credit: Future) What minor assembly there was assisted by an easy-to-follow how-to video (opens in new tab) on Urtopia’s website, and it took me around 25 minutes to get it finalized. Everything you need is included in the box, including a small tire pump. Urtopia recommends downloading its app, where you can create an account and pair the bike to it via a generated QR code on the bike’s dot-matrix display. Once connected, you can link the bike to your local Wi-Fi network for software and firmware updates, of which I have already had two since getting the bike in July. Urtopia’s front light and blinker work well.  (Image credit: Future) The next step is registering your thumbprint, which is integrated into the power button to turn on the bike. Without it, you could still ride away with the bike, but nothing will work on it, especially the pedal-assist system. Powering on the Urtopia, you get a pleasant chime, and the screen lights up, indicating the current speed and level of pedal assist you have engaged. Zero is off, where you can ride Urtopia like a standard, gearless bike. Next are levels 1 through 3, which increase the assistance dramatically. Finally, there is a level 4 “Turbo” mode, where the cycle takes off with little pedaling. Setting up the fingerprint reader and sounds. (Image credit: Future) Changing levels is done via the left thumb controller – up to increase, down to decrease, and left/right to engage your rear blinkers. It’s all very intuitive. Pressing the power button when the bike is on rings the “bell,” which is a clever addition. Setting the volume to level II or higher results in a deafening sound peaking at a whopping 92db, above a hair dryer and just below a helicopter. The entire setup process was not only painless but quite fun. Urtopia is more of a smart device with a bike built on top of it, and there’s nothing like it on the market. Here are just some of the things the Android and iOS apps can do with Urtopia: Urtopia’s smartbar connecting to the internet. (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) Find my bike Alarm under mode “lock the bike” Track routes rode, including a “replay” of your ride with full data Battery status / Alarm of low battery Change volume Set lights on/automatic, rear braking Change sounds for level changes, bell, power on, and alarm Bike health diagnostic check Vibration level There’s also just a lot of fun with the bike. You can change the bell ring to a dog barking or a horse nicker. To get to Turbo mode, you must hold and press “up” so you don’t accidentally engage it. Doing so shows an animated rocket taking off. That app itself is very gamified. The company even added the classic game Snake, which can be experienced on the smartbar. Adding to all this whizbang tech is also voice control. Hold the power button when the bike is on, and the display reveals a face awaiting your command. You can tell the cycle to change levels, toggle your lights, or even power down. For the headlamp, you can have the bike auto-sense darkness and put your lights on automatically, an excellent safety and convenience feature. The 250-watt rear-hub single-gear Gates Carbon belt drive. (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) Find My Bike combines GPS and the eSIM so that if someone takes your bike, you can track it on a map to recover it. You have an excellent anti-theft system combined with the alarm, which engages if the bike is moved. Of course, you’d still want to lock the bike since anyone could take it, but these features give some peace of mind. Urtopia has even posted a real-world example of how this tech worked for one customer. Hopping onto the bike, it all feels familiar, albeit more comfortable than my trusty Specialized Crosstrail. I was pleasantly surprised by the seat’s comfort, considering Urtopia offers an upgraded seat on its website for $59 (opens in new tab). The LED is always visible no matter the lighting conditions. (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) After riding the bike for over an hour on a semi-hard trail, I was smitten. I could ride the bike with pedal assist off with comfort, but when I hit a hill, just going to level 1 peddle-assist was enough to save my legs from extra hard work. Going to level 2 was more than enough speed for me where I could comfortably ride at 11+ mph. Turbo, where you can hit 20 mph, feels borderline too fast, and you should wear a helmet at that speed and have plenty of room to decelerate. Despite the odd frame design, the Urtopia fit our Thule bike rack with no problems. With its light 33lbs weight, loading and unloading the bike (or carrying it up to an apartment) was a breeze. Urtopia Carbon E-bike: What I don’t like (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) Assembly was fine, although I didn’t love fitting the seat in the frame with the power wire and nut system. It works, but it can be a bit tricky. I wouldn’t say no to rubber covers for a few exposed screw holes on the frame. Speaking of the frame, it can scratch and scuff eas...
