Michael Hsu stated that it is starting to worry him that “we’re not spending that time and attention on some other things,” like fintech, which he described as the “future.”

United States Acting Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) Michael Hsu has expressed concerns that regulators are spending “too much time on crypto,” rather than more pressing issues, such as technology and banking.
The crypto skeptic OCC head made the comments during an interview with Reuters on Oct. 13, as he outlined a worry that crypto is “occupying a lot of brain space for an awful lot of people” in the regulatory community.
Hsu has been at the helm of the OCC since May 2021 and serves as the administrator for the federal banking system and chief economic officer of the OCC.
During his tenure, has called for greater supervision of crypto firms and standards around stablecoins, while also stressing the need for a cautious approach to crypto regulation due to “red flags” with the sector’s rapid growth.
“We’re spending too much time on crypto,” he told Reuters, adding that “it’s interesting, it has thorny issues… but relative to other technology and banking issues, I think we’re now kind of overweight crypto.”
Hsu went on to explain that there are other areas that need to be focused on at present, specifically relating to fintech, something which he emphasized last month required immediate oversight to avoid a “severe problem or crisis” due to the sector’s rampant expansion, adding:
“The persistence of the occupation of brain space, it’s starting to worry me now that we’re not spending that time and attention on some other things.”
The OCC head said he thinks fintech is the future, and therefore it needs proper time and considerations to help the sector thrive sustainably.
“This is the future, so let’s do the future right,” he said.
These sentiments are in stark contrast to Hsu’s views on crypto, given that he described the sector as “an immature industry based on an immature technology,” during a lecture at a Harvard Law School roundtable on Oct. 11.

Hsu also outlined concerns with the crypto sector’s apparent fear of missing out (FOMO) syndrome which he argued fosters wild speculation as opposed to innovation.
“Promises of innovation and inclusion often mask crypto’s promotion of a gold rush vibe that exploits people’s fear of missing out on the next Google or Amazon.”
“My skepticism of crypto stems from a frustration that the most promising innovations have been crowded out by hype and a fixation on trading,” Hsu added.

U.S. House Jan. 6 Committee Votes To Subpoena Trump – Reuters https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-house-jan-6-committee-votes-to-subpoena-trump-reuters/
WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by Donald Trump’s supporters voted unanimously on Thursday to subpoena the former president, a move that could lead to criminal charges if he does not comply.
The House select committee’s seven Democratic and two Republican members voted 9-0 in favor of issuing a subpoena for Trump to provide documents and testimony under oath in connection with the storming of the Capitol.
“He must be accountable. He is required to answer for his actions. He is required to answer for those police officers who put their lives and bodies on the line to defend our democracy. He is required to answer to those millions of Americans whose votes he wanted to throw out as part of his scheme to remain in power,” the panel’s Democratic chairman, Representative Bennie Thompson, said.

The vote came after the committee spent more than two hours making its case – via statements from members, documents, and recorded testimony – that Trump planned to deny his 2020 election defeat in advance, failed to call off the thousands of supporters who stormed the Capitol, and followed through with his false claims that the election was stolen even as close advisers told him he had lost.
Federal law says that failure to comply with a congressional subpoena is a misdemeanor, punishable by one to 12 months imprisonment. If the select committee’s subpoena is ignored, the full House must vote on whether to make a referral to the Department of Justice, which has the authority to decide whether to bring charges.
LOOMING MID-TERMS
The subpoena is expected within days, and would typically give Trump a date by which he should comply. It was not clear when the full House – which is out of Washington until mid-November – could vote on whether to make a criminal referral.
Trump responded to the vote with angry comments on his social media service Truth Social. “Why did they wait until the very end, the final moments of their last meeting? Because the Committee is a total ‘BUST’ that has only served to further divide our Country which, by the way, is doing very badly – A laughing stock all over the World?” he wrote.
One former Trump adviser, Steve Bannon, is due to be sentenced next week after a jury found him guilty of contempt of Congress charges for not complying with a committee subpoena. But the Justice Department declined to charge another, Mark Meadows, who the House had also suggested should be prosecuted.
Federal prosecutors are also investigating the former president’s removal of classified documents from the White House at the end of his term, and have warned that they believe they have not yet recovered all the documents taken.
The House select committee has been investigating the attack on the Capitol, which left more than 140 police officers injured and led to several deaths, for more than a year, interviewing over 1,000 witnesses.

Thompson said he recognized that subpoenaing a former president was a serious action, but argued that the stakes were high for the future of U.S. democracy.
Thursday’s meeting followed eight hearings earlier this year and one in July 2021. There were no live witnesses on Thursday, but the panel presented videotaped testimony to build a case that Trump’s efforts to overturn his November 2020 presidential election defeat constituted illegal conduct, far beyond normal politics.
FEARS OF VIOLENCE
The committee presented evidence from Secret Service agents and intelligence officials who said before Jan.6 that they expected violence at the pro-Trump rally and believed there were caches of weapons around Washington.
“Their plan is to literally kill people. Please please take this tip seriously and investigate further,” a Dec. 26 Secret Service email said.
Thursday’s vote could be the committee’s last public action before the Nov. 8 midterm elections that will determine whether President Joe Biden’s fellow Democrats or Trump’s Republicans control Congress.
The committee is also due to release a report on its findings within the coming weeks.
Representative Liz Cheney, the panel’s Republican vice chairperson, said the panel might ultimately decide to make a series of criminal referrals to the Department of Justice.
The hearings held this year may have convinced some Republicans that Trump bears some responsibility for the attack. A two-day Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Wednesday showed two in five Republicans view Trump as at least partly responsible for the attack.
Previous hearings focused on Trump’s inaction before and during the storming of the Capitol, his pressure on Vice President Mike Pence to deny Biden’s victory, militias whose members participated in the attack, and Trump’s interactions with close advisers questioning his false allegations of massive voter fraud.
The one-time reality television star has denied wrongdoing and hinted he will seek the White House again in 2024. He regularly holds rallies where he continues to claim falsely that he lost the election because of widespread fraud.
More than 880 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, with more than 400 guilty pleas so far.

Reliance Jio Begins Removing All Disney+ Hotstar Bundled Plans – The Indian Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/reliance-jio-begins-removing-all-disney-hotstar-bundled-plans-the-indian-express/
Reliance Jio has removed all but two of its bundled streaming plans that come with a Disney+ Hotstar mobile subscription. Of the multiple bundled Disney+ Hotstar plans that Jio offered to its users at various price points, only two remain.
This was spotted first by TelecomTalk, and the list of plans which have been removed so far include the Rs 499 plan, Rs 601 plan, Rs 799 plan, Rs 1,099 plan, Rs 333 plan, Rs 419 plan, Rs 583 plan, Rs 783 plan and Rs 1,199 plan, all of which are no longer available to recharge on the platform. However, users who have already recharged with one of these plans will likely be able to continue using it till the validity lasts.
The Rs 1,499 plan and Rs 4,199 plan are still there and will come with bundled Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions. But it remains unclear if these plans will also be around for long. These two plans also offer a bundled Disney+ Hotstar Premium subscription and not a ‘Mobile’ subscription that limits users to 720p resolution and only one mobile device.
While the Rs 1,499 plan comes with 2GB daily data for 84 days, the Rs 4,199 plan comes with 3GB daily data for 365 days. Both plans also offer unlimited calling and 100 SMS per day.
Why did the Disney+ Hotstar bundled plans go down?
Jio was the only telecom player offering bundled Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions, and while the company has not officially revealed the reason behind dropping support for these bundled plans, it seems the reason could be Disney+ Hotstar no longer having rights to stream the next IPL season, the rights for which have now been acquired by Viacom18. The latter is part of the Reliance Industries Limited via TV18.
Disney+ Hotstar will still be streaming the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup though, and it seems those looking to buy a new recharge plan with bundled Disney+ Hotstar benefits will now have to choose between the only two Jio plans left that offer these perks.

We also got Sony’s announcement that Spider-Man: Miles Morales is headed to PC next month, but we have to start today’s roundup off by getting serious as Activision Blizzard has been hit with yet another sexual harassment lawsuit. For more details, just keep on reading.
Activision Blizzard Hit With Another Sexual Harassment Lawsuit
We’ll get the serious stuff out of the way first, as yet another employee is suing the company over a “pervasive ‘frat-boy’ workplace culture.” The lawsuit has been put forward by a woman refered to as Jane Doe and alleges that former manager Miguel Vega sexually harassed her after she began working at Activision Blizzard in 2016. The lawsuit alleges that Vega “repeatedly groped Ms. Doe’s breasts” and would often attempt to kiss her, claiming that Vega would say things like “one day you’ll give in” when Doe stopped him.

Elden Ring Update Prepares It For Ray Tracing And Possible DLC
Onto more positive news now, as FromSoftware could be gearing up to announce some Elden Ring DLC. Dataminers have dived into the files of the game’s latest update, revealing “raytracing strings” that indicate an update that includes ray tracing is right around the corner. More interestingly, popular dataminer Lance McDonald also reveals that these strings also reference two new maps, neither of which are currently in Elden Ring at the moment.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales Coming To Steam November 18
Sony is ramping up its presence on PC by steadily bringing its hefty catalogue of exclusives to Steam. Titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, and Days Gone have already made the leap, but it’s now been announced that Spider Man: Miles Morales will be following them very shortly, launching on Steam on November 18. Definitely a solid choice if you’re looking for something to play over the festive season.
Toad Will Have An “Improvised” Song In The Mario Movie
Now that the Mario movie’s first trailer is out in the wild, the stars of the project have been talking a little more openly about what fans can start to expect. Toad voice actor Keegan-Michael Key recently gave us the clearest indication that the movie will be a lot more musical than some of Illumination’s previous titles, as Key explains he got to “improvise a song” for Toad. If Toad is getting his own song, it stands to reason that bigger characters like Mario and Bowser will also be getting their groove on.

Incumbent Congressman Bill Huizenga Faces 3 Challengers In Race For U.S. House’s 4th District – MLive.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/incumbent-congressman-bill-huizenga-faces-3-challengers-in-race-for-u-s-houses-4th-district-mlive-com/
KALAMAZOO, MI – Incumbent U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, faces three challengers Nov. 8 in the race for the U.S. House’s new 4th District.
Huizenga faces Democrat and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Joseph Alfonso, Libertarian and former state lawmaker Lorence Wenke and U.S. Army veteran Curtis Michael Clark of the U.S. Taxpayers Party.
The U.S. House’s new, redistricted 4th District encompasses the southern half of Ottawa County, including the cities of Holland, Zeeland and Hudsonville along with the Jenison area. From Ottawa County, the district stretches south just past Benton Harbor and east to include Kalamazoo, Portage and Battle Creek.
The redistricting had placed Huizenga into the same district as fellow Republican U.S. Congressman Fred Upton. The match-up was avoided, however, after Upton announced earlier this spring he would retire from Congress.
Huizenga was initially without a Democratic challenger after Alfonso, who filed his candidacy last December, was removed from the primary ballot in late May when the state board of canvassers ruled that he had fallen short of the necessary 1,000 signatures to petition onto the ballot.
But Alfonso went to secure the Democratic nomination on the November ballot after he launched a successful write-in campaign in the Democratic primary in August.
Alfonso is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and previously worked in banking. He holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science.
Huizenga has served in the U.S. House since 2011 and is a member of the House Financial Services Committee. He also is the co-owner of Huizenga Gravel Inc. Prior to his time in Congress, Huizenga served in the state House from 2003 to 2009. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College.
Wenke is a former state lawmaker who served in the state House from 2003 to 2009 as a Republican. Prior to working in state politics, he served eight years as a Kalamazoo county commissioner. Wenke is the former CEO of Wenke Greenhouses and he holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University.
Clark served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 2006 and has worked in broadcasting, according to information he submitted to Ballotpedia.
MLive/The Grand Rapids Press partnered with the nonpartisan League of Women Voters of Michigan to provide candidate information for readers. Each candidate was asked to outline their stances on a variety of public policy issues listed below.
Clark did not respond when asked to participate in filling out the questionnaire.
All responses in the voter guide were submitted directly by the candidate and have not been edited by the League of Women Voters, except for necessary cuts if a reply exceeded character limitations. Spelling and grammar were not corrected. Publication of candidate statements and opinions is solely in the interest of public service and should NOT be considered as an endorsement. The League never supports or opposes any candidates or political parties.

What do you see as the federal government’s role in health care? Given the COVID-19 pandemic, what are your concerns and plans regarding public health in the U.S.?
Joseph Alfonso:
Our first step in convincing the general public that medicare for all would work is to have them see it at work in their homes. Medicare for everyone under the age of 18 would educate every family on the financial freedom it would provide and afford medical care access to every child in the United states. If a Medicare for All bill comes across my desk I will sign it, but if we cannot get there, this step would push us closer to our goals and help millions of Americans.
Bill Huizenga:
Access to affordable health care is out of reach for too many people. To reduce costs and increase access to health care, we must curb costly junk lawsuits, encourage the use of health savings accounts, increase portability, and empower both small businesses and states to be innovative in reducing costs for employees and their families. Any reforms Congress passes must include protections for patients with pre-existing conditions. Congress must make improving mental health care a priority. I continue to lead bipartisan efforts to modernize and improve mental healthcare at the federal level.
Lorence Wenke:
The Federal government pays too many of the nation’s health care bills, but where the Federal government pays the bills it should also make the rules. Personal responsibility for an individual’s healthcare should be connected to how much and how often the Federal government pays the bills for an individual. I support the Federal government taxing harmful health products such as alcohol, sugars, transfats to reduce the cost of medical care. Pandemics like Covid 19 are rare but preparation by the Federal government is necessary & should support vaccinations, research and rules of behavior. Government did well in response to Covid 19.
What federal policies do you support for a healthy economy and to help Americans without financial security improve their economic positions?
Bill Huizenga:
As a small business owner, I understand what Michigan job creators need: less red tape and lower taxes. My number one priority in Congress is to promote an atmosphere for job creation, economic growth, and higher wages for employees across Michigan. Washington’s addiction to spending is having a negative impact on our economy, increasing inflation, and raising costs on families across Michigan. That is why I am a strong supporter of the Inflation Prevention Act and continue to support a balanced budget amendment to fully address Washington’s out of control spending over the long term.
Lorence Wenke:
Wealthy people should pay a higher tax rate on income than lower income taxpayers. Balancing the budget with tax increases and spending reductions will have my support. Wealthy people have too many options for reducing their taxes. All citizens should pay at least a small minimum in taxes on their income. I support legislation for returning manufacturing from China to America. I support reducing financial subsidies for people who could work and refuse. I do not support endless funding to parents for children born to parents who will not take responsibility for their children. Support for job training should be accessible.
Joseph Alfonso:
Having access to fields that the community needs is a starting point. Sometimes young people, or even older people, learn outside rather than the classroom. We can work with the small businesses on creating opportunities for those who do not have financial security.
What federal policies do you support regarding elections, campaign funding and voting rights?
Lorence Wenke:
Federal policies should set the dates for elections and be the final source of enforcement of accurate vote counting when Federal employees are being elected. All dollars spent funding campaigns from any sources should be on public record for all to view. The voting rights of all citizens should be protected, counted by machines and according to the rules of the State and Federal governments. The gerrymandering of districts should be ended by the Federal government. Citizens who have the right to vote should be issued specific voting identification that can be used at polls and absentee ballots.
Joseph Alfonso:
We can really improve our system by taking money out of politics and putting it into our elections. The right to vote is sacred and should be protected, and putting in barriers on citizens of this community to use that sacred power is against the foundation we are supposed to be.
Bill Huizenga:
The idea that our election process should be open and free from illegal practices is the cornerstone of our democracy. While we should continue to bring more Americans into our democratic process, it should be done without the threat of fraud or abuse to the electoral system. That is why I am supporting the Save Democracy Act. The Save Democracy Act would institute common-sense reforms to address election integrity concerns and restore confidence in the principle of one-citizen, one-vote. Congress must continually work to ensure that each federal election is free, fair, and legitimate.
How would you address racial, economic, health and education inequities, including our country’s 16% of children and 10% of seniors living in poverty?
Joseph Alfonso:
Our community can have all the job openings they could ask for, but if those jobs are paying qualified people below their survivability we are going to continue to see this problem. Policy that makes universities explain why the cost of their schools are what they are is a step in the right direction. Not making parents wait for a child tax credit to come in at the end of a year, and stop borrowing against Social Security could help lower that percentage as well.
Bill Huizenga:
A federal policy is not going to address these inequities overnight. Students, regardless of their zip code, should have access to a quality education where teachers, administrators, and parents have greater input.
Rampant inflation is causing soaring prices that hurt seniors, individuals, and families across all walks of life. Enacting pro-growth policies can reduce economic disparities, lower prices, and increase opportunity. Workforce development must be geared to equip those seeking work with job openings.
Lorence Wenke:
Taxpayers’ support should only be available to people who made use of their free public education, did not have children outside of marriage, do not use drugs, and are willing to work. Taxpayer dollars needs to be earned through work or volunteer work through ...

Family Cruise Vacation Requests Growing Significantly – TravelPulse https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/family-cruise-vacation-requests-growing-significantly-travelpulse/
Requests for family cruises are pouring in, reports leading online cruise marketplace CruiseCompete, with booking requests having recently risen by a staggering 285 percent.
When it comes to taking the entire family on vacation, cruising offers an excellent experience for all ages, as well as great value for the money. With more than 50 global cruise lines sailing over 500 cruise ships on voyages all over the world, travelers are sure to find something to suit their tastes.

With nearly two decades in business, CruiseCompete is a free online service that helps travelers request custom quotes from multiple sources and find the best deals on their selected sailings.
CruiseCompete also releases a CruiseTrends report each month—reporting the most-requested cruise ships, lines and travel dates for premium, luxury and river cruising—based on actual consumer quote requests and transactions taking place on its website (an average of over 25,000 quotes monthly).
This month, CruiseCompete reported that consumers are placing a premium on cabin room service, citing it as one of their top most-desired onboard amenities when it comes to choosing their cruises.
The comparison site provided a rundown of the top seven reasons that cruisegoers love having room service when they’re sailing:
There is nothing that feels more indulgent than having your cabin steward awaken you with the aroma of fresh coffee and freshly-baked pastries.
Families often benefit from having cabin room service available at various times of the day and night, especially those kids of various ages, not all of whom might be ‘dining-room’ ready.
It can sometimes provide couples with an opportunity for some private romance alone in their cabin.
While there are usually many dining options no matter what you are doing, if you’ve had a busy day, you might just need a break from fellow passengers and prefer to dine in.
Sometimes guests just might like to have some food available to enjoy in the comfort of their cabin.
Since children never stop being hungry, it provides parents peace of mind, knowing that in-cabin service is always available, typically 24/7.
If your cabin category offers room service at any time, why not take advantage of it?!

Amazon said Thursday its Prime members ordered more than 100 million items during a sales event this week that analysts are expecting to be a bellwether for the holiday shopping season.
As expected, the Seattle-based e-commerce company did not share sales figures. Still, some third-party estimates offer clues on how consumers spent during the two-day discount event that ran on Tuesday and Wednesday.
According to the data group Numerator, which tracked roughly 44,670 orders during the sale, the average order size clocked in at $46.68, $13 less than what it was during Amazon’s Prime Day sales event in July. Inflation also had an impact – 26% of shoppers passed on a deal because it wasn’t a necessity, Numerator said.
Major retailers have been offering more holiday discounts this year and doing it much earlier than usual, aiming to offload excess goods and offer cash-strapped Americans better deals amid high inflation.
Amazon’s discount event this week was the first time the company offered major sales to its Prime members twice in one year. Walmart has also been offering sales this week and has expanded its window for gift returns to between Oct. 1 and Jan. 31, compared with last year’s return window of Nov. 1 to Jan. 24. Meanwhile, Target began offering holiday deals last week during a two-day discount event. The company declined to share its revenue from those sales.
According to Salesforce, which analyzes online shopping data, the average online discount rate on Tuesday and Wednesday was roughly 21%, the deepest discount rate since the beginning of the pandemic outside of Cyber Week, the time between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday.
But despite the deep discounts, consumers are still generally paying more than they did in the past two years due to high inflation. The average online selling price on Tuesday and Wednesday, for example, was up 8% compared to last year, and 17% compared to 2020, Salesforce said.
Online spending in November and December is expected to hit $209.7 billion, a 2.5% jump from 2021, according to Adobe Analytics. That’s sluggish growth compared to last year’s gain of 8.6%.

The Works’ Mobile Grocer To Bring Groceries To Memphis’ Food Deserts – Commercial Appeal https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-works-mobile-grocer-to-bring-groceries-to-memphis-food-deserts-commercial-appeal/
Fresh fruits, canned goods, and reusable bags are the marks of any average grocery store, but what if instead that grocery shopping experience came to you?
The Works’ grocery store on wheels, Mobile Grocer, hit the streets in North Memphis for the first time Wednesday.
“I feel like a kid on Christmas, like a 6-year-old, with all of the gifts,” The Works CEO Roshun Austin said. “This is a dream in that way because for a long time… we were trying to find ways for not only our staff members and neighbors to have access [to groceries].”
While the routes are still being finalized, Austin said the truck will definitely serve the Klondike, Frayser, Smokey City, and North Memphis areas. The Works will also partner with hyperlocal organizations to determine the best stops for the truck.

“Everything we do is about a partnership with groups and neighbors, so we’d like the voices of people who live in this place,” Austin said.
The Works is a community development corporation serving the Memphis community by offering affordable housing and social services.
BJ Adams was hired by The Works last year to drive the Mobile Grocer. After supply chain problems delayed the project since 2020, Adams is happy to get on the road to bring fresh foods to neighborhoods without grocery stores.
“We’re just trying to find out exactly what areas we want to target first,” Adams said. “Once we get the routes configured, then we’ll do about two hours in each location… We’re going to hit some senior living facilities, maybe some areas where you don’t really have access to fruits and vegetables, as well.”
The roughly 20-foot trailer is stocked wall-to-wall with every type of grocery item one might need: bread, cereal, fruits, vegetables, canned foods, plates, and cups. It also opens from the back to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
In 2010, The Works opened the South Memphis Farmers Market to fulfill a pillar of its South Memphis Revitalization Action Plan, which emphasizes healthy living by improving access to healthy foods in the community. The seasonal market with local vendors then expanded to become the brick-and-mortar store The Grocer at 1400 Mississippi Blvd.

Rick James, owner and CEO of Castle Retail Group — the group behind stores including High Point Grocery and South Point Grocery, acts as The Works’ wholesaler. James and Austin have been working together for more than a decade on addressing food deserts in Memphis.
“To see it, you know, see it actually come off of a sheet of paper and sitting in this parking lot is great, but the value of it being able to move throughout the city and get into neighborhoods, especially where access is limited because of transportation problems,” James said. “That’s one of the biggest things for seniors in the city is they rely on somebody else for transportation, or they rely on mass transit, which is very time-consuming, but to be able to have this show up at a parking lot in their building is just really going to be terrific.”

Preview
First off, the Padres return home after five straight road playoff games. Surely that’s a single-season record. They went 2-1 in New York’s Citi Field and then 1-1 in L.A. That’s not too shabby for having to deal with two 100-win teams, huh?
The two teams squared off in Petco Park nine times this season, with the Dodgers winning six of those games.
Snell won the Cy Young with the Rays in 2018 and he started to resemble his old self down the stretch. From July through the end of the regular season, he had a 2.53 ERA (2.43 FIP) with 133 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings. He had three terrible outings in there that really dragged down his numbers from nearly unhittable in the other 14 starts. Of course, one of those clunkers was against the Dodgers. He also walked six while giving up two runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings against the Mets in the Wild Card Series.
Gonsolin was amazing this season, notably at keeping runners off base with a 0.88 WHIP. He only pitched once after Aug. 23, however, due to a forearm injury. His one tuneup before the playoffs came in a two-inning outing on Oct. 3. With the Dodgers having a bye, they did have time in between his last start and this one to get him a little more length.
“We extended him in the live sim games that we had this past week,” manager Dave Roberts said after Game 2. “We feel good about the length and how he is throwing the baseball.”
Still, it feels like a possibility the Dodgers will need some good work from their bullpen in Game 3.
Even without a named closer, they have a strong bullpen. It is the Padres, however, who have gotten 9 1/3 scoreless innings from their bullpen this series while Josh Hader is starting to look like his old self and Robert Suarez might be having a breakthrough playoffs.
Prediction
The Dodgers offense will strike first and strike hard, but the Padres won’t go away. It’s going to be a long and eventful night.
Pick: Dodgers 7, Padres 6

If you’ve got a bunch of Gameboy and Gameboy Advance cartridges lying around and a Steam Deck (I’m jealous), you might be in luck if you’re looking to bring the two together.
Epilogue is a tech company that, back in 2021, released a nifty little gadget called the GB Operator, which when connected to a computer can run any Gameboy, Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance game through their own homebrew emulator.
The really neat thing is that while you can play the game through the emulator, you can also save your progress and have that progress stay on the cartridge meaning that if you decide to go back to an official console, you won’t lose any progress.
The Epilogue GB Operator and Studio can also be used to easily write homebrew games onto physical cartridges too, meaning it’s a good way for indie developers dabbling in demakes and retro-style games to simply make physical copies of them.
This gadget was released in 2021, so why the hell am I talking about it now? WELL! Epilogue themselves posted an update on their Twitter announcing that after much testing, the GB Operator and Operator app are “fully compatible with Steam OS” with Gameboy games able to run “impeccably” on the Steam Deck.
It’s official – enjoy your childhood cartridges, now on SteamDeck! Today we validated at the office that GB Operator and the Operator app are fully compatible with Steam OS and run impeccably on SteamDeck. This makes the experience fun and portable, we’re happy to support it pic.twitter.com/Ik4Pc6xPny
— Epilogue (@meet_epilogue) October 13, 2022
So get this, folks: those little games that you could play as a kid on the go? You can now play them on the go again. But this time? It’s on something bigger and bustier.
While there is something inherently funny about making something that was already portable once again portable but with a different flavour, this is still pretty neat. While still portable like they literally always were, your old Gameboy games can also now be played on a reasonably larger screen thanks to the GB Operator.
The Steam Deck’s emulation capabilities continue to expand here, which is very cool to see. From this to the ability to recreate the experience of playing WiiU and 3DS in probably the most accurate way to date, it’s clear that the Steam Deck is becoming the most flexible console out there.

Mastercard Focusing On 5 Key Areas To Turn Crypto Into ‘an Everyday Way To Pay’ – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/mastercard-focusing-on-5-key-areas-to-turn-crypto-into-an-everyday-way-to-pay-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/
Mastercard has outlined five key crypto areas it is working on in order to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay.” A Mastercard executive opined: “Someday soon, the ability to own and spend a digital currency could be as seamless as making a contactless card payment.”
Mastercard Focusing on 5 Major Areas Covering Crypto, Metaverse, and NFTs
Mastercard highlighted on Wednesday five different areas it is working on in order to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay.”
Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president of Digital Asset and Blockchain Products & Digital Partnerships at Mastercard, explained: “Digital assets like cryptocurrencies and central bank digital currencies [CBDCs] have the potential to transform the financial system’s infrastructure.” He added that non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain gaming, and metaverse experiences “could change how consumers shop and communicate.”
The executive opined:
Someday soon, the ability to own and spend a digital currency could be as seamless as making a contactless card payment.
Dhamodharan proceeded to outline five key areas that Mastercard is working on to make this happen. The first area is crypto cards. He detailed that Mastercard already announced dozens of new crypto card programs globally this year. For example, in the U.S., the payments giant worked with Gemini on a credit card that pays rewards in cryptocurrencies. In Argentina, the company launched a prepaid card with Binance. In Europe, Mastercard recently announced the world’s first physical debit card that can be customized to include a customer’s NFT avatar.
The second area is services for crypto. Noting that “Mastercard is a provider of cybersecurity, digital ID, advisory and open banking services to tens of thousands of financial institutions,” Dhamodharan said the company is going to use the same tools “to provide more support to crypto players and issuers.” Mastercard has expanded its consulting work to include a dedicated crypto practice and it completed the purchase of Ciphertrace last year. The company will soon launch a new crypto monitoring product called Crypto Secure.
The third area is payments. “We’ve partnered with a handful of top-tier crypto-focused companies — including Paxos, Circle, Evolve and Uphold — to develop ways for people to quickly convert their crypto to fiat to make payments. This work will support current and future crypto card partnerships,” the executive detailed.
Noting that the fourth area focuses on crypto on the Mastercard networks, Dhamodharan emphasized:
An important way to expand choice for people is to bring certain Mastercard-approved digital assets onto our networks, a plan we announced last year that continues to move forward.
The fifth area concerns the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Mastercard is working to grow its partnerships to support NFTs and the metaverse, Dhamodharan explained. For example, Coinbase users can now pay for NFTs with Mastercard.
In conclusion, the Mastercard executive noted that the payments giant already operates “a trusted global network that enables payments with a single tap or click.” He added, “That’s what the crypto economy needs to support the next million users — or the next billion,” elaborating:
We’re excited to prioritize these core areas to give people more access to the crypto ecosystem and help it keep innovating and growing.
What do you think about the five key areas Mastercard is engaged in to “turn cryptocurrencies into an everyday way to pay”? Let us know in the comments section below.

WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other top lawmakers urgently dialed military officials and White House staff seeking help during the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol by Donald Trump supporters, video shown on Thursday revealed.
At what is likely its last hearing on the deadly attack, the House of Representatives Select Committee aired the previously unseen video that showed the fear gripping the Capitol as rioters stormed the building.
Video showed Pelosi and Schumer, top Senate Republican Mitch McConnell, and Republican Senator John Thune calling the Department of Defense asking for military backup to help clear the Capitol complex.

Pelosi and Schumer also called acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen.
Rioters were breaking windows and ransacking their offices “and all the rest of that – that’s nothing,” Pelosi said on the call, the footage showed.

“The concerns we have about personal safety just transcend everything. But the fact is on any given day they’re breaking the law in many different ways. And quite frankly, much of it at the instigation of the president of the United States.”
“Why don’t you get the president to tell them to leave the Capitol, Mr. Attorney General, in your law enforcement responsibility?” Schumer said on the call. “A public statement: they should all leave.”
The footage also showed Pelosi and top House Democrats being told that members of the House were pulling on gas masks. Upon hearing this, Pelosi silently looked at House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn.
“Can you believe it?” she asked, turning to someone off screen.
She was also shown talking to Ralph Northam, then governor of Virginia, asking what military aid his state was able to send and whether he was able to send police without permission from the federal government. In the video, she said she planned to call Larry Hogan, governor of Maryland, about sending the National Guard from his state. Maryland and Virginia border Washington, DC.
The hearing room fell silent while the footage was being shown. Many of those present – including reporters and congressional staff – were in the Capitol during the Jan. 6 attack.

Businesses should rethink the way staff use their time in offices, says the boss of the messaging platform Slack.
With the rise of hybrid working, lots of people now divide their working week between home and going into their workplace.
But being in the office should be an opportunity to do things that cannot be done at home, argues Stewart Butterfield, Slack’s chief executive.
Sitting at a desk with headphones on is not one of them, he says.
Of course the boss of an online messaging platform is not going to go so far as to say staff should leave their laptops at home, but he does say it would “put a strong line in the sand about what the purpose is of getting together”.
Slack has headquarters in the US, Canada, Japan, Australia and India.
Reflecting on its offices before the pandemic, Mr Butterfield says: “The 80% of the floor space that we dedicated to kind of factory-farm, battery-chicken housing for people to use their desks all by themselves and listen to their headphones, and not talk to anyone else… was a bit of a waste.”
A comfortable environment
Ongoing renovations are gearing Slack workspace more towards that of a social club, he says, because he wants people to come to work to collaborate and build relationships face-to-face.
“The best thing we can do is create a comfortable environment for people to come together and actually enjoy themselves,” he says.
He accepts that some people will choose to work full time in the office because they either cannot or do not want to work from home, and also thinks that young people starting their careers generally prefer to be in the office with their peers.
“It’s hard to imagine starting your career fresh out of university, and not going to the office, and not being able to meet all these people in person,” he says.
“But I think the the majority of knowledge workers, over time, will settle into some sort of pattern of regular intervals of getting together.”
‘Should have been an email’
Mr Butterfield is really not a big fan of meetings.
He champions Amazon’s idea, introduced by Jeff Bezos, where each attendee reads a six-page memo at the start of a meeting as a briefing note, rather than sitting through PowerPoint presentations.
“There probably are 20% or 30% (of meetings) that don’t actually have to be meetings, that would be more effective with written communication,” he says, in a nod to the internet meme “this meeting should have been an email”.
He also backs what he calls “asynchronous work” – minimising the need to share information in real time.
“So for example, people going around the room and giving their status update, if you can do that asynchronously, and I can record mine at 08:17, and then listen to yours at 09:53 or whatever – that is itself worth a lot,” he says.
“I think the place for most teams to invest in is how they do asynchronous work, because we’re humans.”
G2E: Sports Entertainment Industry Sold On Gaming Las Vegas Review-Journal
G2E: Sports Entertainment Industry Sold On Gaming – Las Vegas Review-Journal https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/g2e-sports-entertainment-industry-sold-on-gaming-las-vegas-review-journal/
A heavy focus was placed on sports betting and fan experiences during the Global Gaming Expo, the gaming industry trade show held this week at The Venetian Expo.
It comes as no surprise as more states consider legalizing sports betting. And online gaming — including sports betting — is the fastest growing segment of the industry, according to American Gaming Association President and CEO Bill Miller.
But the sports entertainment industry’s impact on the conference went beyond the book. Aristocrat Gaming, a subsidiary of Australia-based Aristocrat Leisure Ltd., teased its NFL-licensed slot machines on the trade show floor while casino operators expressed excitement about future sporting events.
In an interview Tuesday, Circa CEO Derek Stevens said he’s encouraged that the sports betting industry is in its infancy and expects a wider market in the coming years.
He said having room to grow is good for brick-and-mortar casinos because of the experience created by watching sports — where watching a game live, and often with others, can change people’s schedules.
“You’re not going to record the Super Bowl and watch it three hours later,” Stevens said. “People are making decisions to make sure they’re in front of a TV. They adjust their schedules for sports. I think it’s a good thing for sports teams; it’s a good thing for sports leagues; it’s a good thing for sports fans and it’s a good thing for sports betting operators.”
Stevens said he expects Circa, a sports-oriented property centered by its three-story sportsbook, and the city to benefit from being a destination for sports fans.
And he’s not alone. According to J.P. Morgan analysts’ investors note about a meeting with Caesars Entertainment executives, the company expects future demand on the Las Vegas Strip to be buoyed by two destination sporting events coming to Las Vegas — the Formula One race in November 2023 and the Super Bowl in 2024.
“Regarding Formula 1, the race will take place on November 18th, historically one of the weakest weekends of the year, with management noting this is likely to bring in ‘hundreds of thousands of visitors’ (Singapore’s race recently brought in ~300k attendees,” analysts wrote. “So you swap a soft weekend with one that’s likely much stronger than even the Super Bowl.”
Aristocrat’s partnership with the NFL also illustrates another area where sports entertainment and gaming are merging. A sneak peek of the machine wasn’t available for public viewing, but Aristocrat still centered its booth around the first-of-its-kind partnership with the football league. The games are expected to be rolled out for the 2023 season.
Jon Hanlin, the company’s senior vice president of commercial strategy and business analytics, said while the partnership comes from the symbiotic relationship between the NFL and casinos, he was impressed when the NFL approached Aristocrat about a potential partnership given their past anti-gaming stance.
“They did a complete 180 — I would have never thought they would have been the first to dive into this space,” Hanlin said. “I think other leagues and other sports entertainment brands are probably going to follow suit. But we’ll be here to help them if they want to join the party.”

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Campfire and other fire restrictions on most Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) lands will be lifted Oct. 14.
The agency made the announcement on Thursday.
“While wildfire risk remains high in some areas, the risk of large fires is low and the state’s capacity to fight fires is good,” said Cynthia Wilkerson, WDFW’s lands division manager. “We know folks are eager to enjoy the outdoors this fall season, and we continue to encourage people to recreate with extreme caution to help prevent wildfires. This includes using alternatives to campfires such as propane stoves for cooking and fully extinguishing any campfires that do occur.”
Campfire restrictions for WDFW’s South Central Region including Benton, Franklin, Yakima and Kittitas counties will be in place through Oct. 15. A campfire ban remains in place through Oct. 31 at the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area in Adams and Grant counties and at the Klickitat Wildlife Area in Klickitat County due to their drier, more sensitive nature.
Maps and detailed information about WDFW’s 33 wildlife areas are available on WDFW’s website.

Land and resort sales are booming for Dream Vacations and CruiseOne agencies, up more than 50% this year compared with 2019, the franchisor said.
Dream Vacations and CruiseOne said resort sales are surpassing prepandemic levels, while its land business in general continues to grow. It attributed the growth to marketing programs and support offered to franchisees, including a “land brochure,” social media assets and more.
The franchisor has been putting an increased emphasis on land vacations in recent years and even introduced the Dream Vacations moniker in 2016 partly because of the segment’s growth among agents.
The growth in land and resort sales was announced at the Dream Vacations and CruiseOne Land Summit at the Dreams Onyx in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, which was co-hosted by Apple Leisure Group and AMResorts. The four-day training event drew more than 120 advisors.

BOSS representatives speak with contractors about the room layouts and available space in Barrack 100 on Oct. 6 at Fort Hood. Construction is projected to be complete by August 2023. FORT HOOD, Texas – A wall of Barrack 100 is standing here, a milestone in its construction.
“I am very happy to be building Barrack number 100, and seeing the vertical construction underway is very exciting for sure, as the facility is starting to take shape,” said Brian Dosa, director of Fort Hood Directorate of Public Works. “You can see the walls of the first floor rooms coming together.”
The barracks will be home to 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade Soldiers. Command Sergeant Major Porter Seagram, 69th ADA, said barrack 100 will provide Soldiers a better quality of life.
“These new barracks will drastically improve the quality of life for our Soldiers. Not only are they moving into a fresh space, but they will also be significantly closer to the Lightning Ranch (69th ADA Headquarters). This is noteworthy because some of our Soldiers have a 20-
to-25-minute commute from their barracks to work,” Seagram said. “This also helps with carpooling as it will be easier for them to get a ride. Approximately 15% of our barracks Soldiers do not own a vehicle so having them close to their workplace is a welcome improvement. This will also assist our leaders that do leader checks and inspections. These checks will become more efficient and will take less time out of the day of both the Soldier and the leader.”
Barrack 100 will have rooms that house two Soldiers, but they will each have their own room allowing for some privacy – a concern that has been brought up by Soldiers in the past.
Construction is underway at the site of Barrack 100, Oct. 6 at Fort Hood. “It’s good to see them building a new barrack,” said Spc. Robert Webster, BOSS vice president. “… it’s kind of a morale boost. Fort Hood’s already a big base, but who says it can’t get bigger and better?” (Photo Credit: Eric Franklin, Fort Hood Public Affairs) VIEW ORIGINAL
“We are building rooms that will provide each Soldier with a private room and walk-in closet. Soldiers appreciate the privacy and ability to store and secure their things,” Dosa said. “Barrack number 100 will be built to the 1 + 1 standard – similar to some, but better than many of our barracks on Fort Hood.”
This barrack will be the first to be built from the ground up in more than two decades and Seagram is happy that 69th ADA Soldiers will have brand new, high quality living amenities.
“Knowing that our Soldiers will be in brand new barracks truly brings me joy. Air Defense Artillery Soldiers are the most deployed Soldiers in the United States Army. We have young Sergeants that are on their third deployment in five years. Our Soldiers are deserving of high quality and new living quarters,” Seagram said. “This will be an exciting transition for the Soldiers in the barracks but also for all of the leaders in our formation.”
Dosa is passionate about this project because by developing nice living quarters DPW can give back to the Soldiers at Fort Hood.
“We are thrilled to be building a healthy and comfortable facility for our single Soldiers to live in,” he said. “Our Soldiers have chosen to serve our Nation and they deserve a nice place to live while they are assigned to Fort Hood.”
Seagram is pleased knowing that 69th ADA Soldiers will be in the new barracks soon.
“It is paramount that all Soldiers have quality living amenities. Across the Army we constantly hear ‘People First,’ and I am a firm believer that our video needs to match our audio. After a long day at work, regardless of rank, Soldiers want to come home to a cozy and modern living space. When you look at the Health of the Force Report, it’s clear that Soldiers need good living amenities,” Seagram said. “The 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade prides itself on hard work, dedication, accomplishing the mission and never giving up. This requires an incredible amount of work from our Soldiers. Knowing that they get to go home to quality living conditions is very satisfying.”

Construction on Barrack 100 is projected to be completed in August 2023, but Dosa is also looking forward to the future when construction will begin on Barracks 101 and 102.
“We are also excited to have the money to build barracks number 101 and 102,” he said “Both are in design now and will be awarded for construction by next summer.”
BOSS representatives were brought to the site of Barrack 100 after touring barracks that are being renovated. Spc. Dallas Parker, BOSS president, is happy with the renovation of the currently standing barracks, but was excited that one is being built from the ground up.
“I grew up in a very small town where you didn’t see new stuff (all the time). When we got new stuff, new buildings, new stores it was the talk of the town,” Parker said. “I think people don’t realize how much new things can impact the mental aspect of things. Where they’re building this one, they don’t have any barracks or anything over there. So I think it’ll be a big morale boost for (69th ADA) to have something new in their area.”
“It is good to see them building a new barrack,” said Spc. Robert Webster, BOSS vice president. “It’s like (Parker) said, it’s kind of a morale boost. Fort Hood’s already a big base, but who says it can’t get bigger and better?”

NEW YORK — Game 2 of the ALDS matchup between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians has been postponed due to rain and moved to Friday, MLB announced. First pitch was originally scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET Thursday night, though the forecast calls for rain most of the day Thursday and continuing into the early morning hours Friday. Instead, Game 2 will now be played Friday at 1:07 p.m. ET (still airing on TBS).
Here is Thursday’s weather forecast around Game 2’s original scheduled start time (via CBS News New York). The heaviest rain is expected to hit New York right around what would’ve been first pitch.

The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies waited out a three-hour rain delay prior to playing Game 2 on Wednesday, though the Yankees and Guardians do not have a similar playable window coming their way Thursday, so the game was postponed.
Friday was originally an ALDS off-day, so rescheduling Game 2 was a piece of cake. However, the postponement does force the two teams to play Games 2-5 on four consecutive days (if Games 4 and 5 are necessary). Friday was the final scheduled off-day in the series. Here’s how the Game 2 postponement impact each team’s pitching plans.
The Yankees won Game 1 behind Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rizzo. They lead the best-of-five series 1-0. Game 2’s scheduled starters are All-Star lefty Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44 ERA) and 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber (13-8, 2.88 ERA).
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerbergs UFC Card Set The Stage For Metaverse VR Events Bloody Elbow
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s UFC Card Set The Stage For Metaverse VR Events – Bloody Elbow https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerbergs-ufc-card-set-the-stage-for-metaverse-vr-events-bloody-elbow/
The other shoe has finally dropped in the mystery of just what the hell the UFC was thinking when they closed the doors of their Apex facility to media and the public for UFC Fight Night: Dern vs. Yan earlier this October.
The basic motivations behind the decision became clear on the night of the event itself, when—despite heavy denials in the days prior—Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was spotted sitting cageside as one of a very select few people in attendance. Whether one of the world’s richest men had, in fact, rented out the whole event like a it was a laser-tag birthday party or the UFC had simply decided to gift him with sole occupancy was purely pedantic. Whatever the case, the Endeavor-owned fight promotion had given itself over to one high profile guest.
Now we know why.
The UFC announced on Thursday, October 13th, that they have officially partnered with Zuckerberg’s Meta company to deliver on-demand VR MMA events. In the near future fans will be able to access VR feeds of MMA cards on the Fight Pass platform (h/t MMA Fighting).
“We are excited to offer an unprecedented level of engagement for Fight Pass subscribers and MMA fans around the world by producing a live MMA event in virtual reality,” Crowley Sullivan, Fight Pass vice president and general manager is quoted as saying. “With Meta providing the VR platform and YBVR lending their production expertise, we’re confident this will be a great experience for fight fans.”
The first event to be hosted via this new platform will be LFA 144: Gafurov vs. Silva. Which can be accessed through the Meta Horizon Worlds app. That card takes place this Friday, October 14th, in Sioux Falls, SD. Fans who sign up for the virtual reality feed will apparently get access to a 180 degree panorama view of the fight fight card, and the ability to see and chat with other VR fans live. No word yet on what pricing will look like for future VR events.
The move has apparently been a long-term goal of Dana White’s. As far back as February, the UFC President was teasing his hopes for bringing the UFC to virtual reality sometime in the near future.
“We’re looking to do a fight in the Metaverse,” White enthused. “We’ve been working on it for a while. It’ll be a live fight, an actual fight that takes place inside the metaverse.”
“It’d be kids at home, you put on your (goggles) and you can (get) up and go walk around. We’re still working it out, but yeah, it’ll be soon. We’ll be doing a fight in the metaverse. It’ll be a real fight.”

10 Funniest Gadgets From The Adam West Batman Show – CBR – Comic Book Resources https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/10-funniest-gadgets-from-the-adam-west-batman-show-cbr-comic-book-resources/
Batman (1966) holds a strange place in popular culture, remembered (sometimes fondly) for its campy tone, farcical stories, and goofy action. Despite the many iconic elements, phrases, and action shots of the show remaining a staple of pop culture and the subject of many jokes, many people don’t remember that this was the point.
Yes, Batman was silly, but it was never meant to be taken seriously. The show is a comedy disguised as an action superhero series, and no element of the show makes that clearer than the many weird gadgets Adam West and Burt Ward’s Batman and Robin used. From shields, to lasers, to shark-repellent spray, every gadget featured Batman’s signature logo and motif.
10/10 Batman’s Portable Laser Gun Was For All Purposes
Batman’s Laser Gun (one of the few items in his toolkit without a “Bat” prefix) is one of his most useful gadgets. In the pilot episode alone, he uses it no less than three times, from lighting a fuse, to cutting through steel bars on a window, to melting the firing pin of a revolver. The laser gun became the ace up Batman’s sleeve, and its ridiculous usability was indicative of the show’s comedic style.
What’s even more surprising than a 1960s Batman having a portable, lightweight, high-powered laser is the fact that, unlike some of Batman’s older gadgets, the laser gun has remained a staple of Batman’s inventory. Although it isn’t as portrayed as outlandishly, Batman still keeps laser-based tools, especially laser cutters, in his utility belt to this day.
9/10 The Anti-Hypnotic Bat Reflector Is Perfectly In Line With The Show’s Tone
This gadget is pure Silver Age nonsense, and the show takes this ridiculous deus ex machina and runs with it. Why does Batman have a mirror on his person specifically designed to counter the Mad Hatter? Because why not!
Batman’s high-tech mirror demonstrates the show’s angle on the old “prep time” argument. The idea that Batman could defeat anyone with enough prep time remains true here, but instead of a cool, action-packed portrayal, it’s portrayed as silly, even somewhat slapdash, to get laughs.
8/10 Batman Carries A Key To Wayne Manor (Just In Case)
Once again, Batman‘s take on the idea of the always-prepared Batman is played for laughs, rather than showing a dangerous and shadowy vigilante. In the classic episode “Joker’s Provokers,” Joker ties Batman to a giant key duplicator, intending to kill him by running him through the machine.
However, Joker is foiled when Batman throws his spare key into the machine, buying him time to escape. Adam West’s Batman truly is prepared for everything, just like the comics’ Batman, but his preparations also include simply carrying a spare key in case he gets locked out of his mansion. In a series where the absurd is often presented as mundane, the mundane becomes absurd and increases the hilarity.
7/10 The Bat-Turn Lever Made For One Of The Shows Most Iconic Shots
What with Batman and Robin using an atomic-powered car with a rocket engine, a simple emergency break wouldn’t be enough to pull off high-speed turns. That’s where the Emergency-Bat-Turn-Lever comes into play. First, it releases parachutes to help slow the car before braking and allowing for a full 180-degree turn.
While it does, in a way, make sense that West’s sleek and powerful Batmobile would need a special way to turn, Batman ’66 gave it its own unique flavor. The over-the-top execution makes for a combination of a great action scene, and laugh-out-loud ridiculousness.
6/10 Batman Used Bat-Acillin For Headaches And Bullet Wounds
The modern Batman typically fixes his injuries on the fly with futuristic first-aid equipment or endures long enough to make it back to the Batcave, where Alfred can stitch him up. Adam West’s Batman, however, had a much better way to handle any combat injuries: Bat-Acillin
Bat-Acillin makes video game health packs blush, a simple lozenge that allows whoever takes it to instantly recover from any sickness or wound. In the Western-inspired episode “It’s How You Play The Game,” Robin is shot in the heel, and Batman gives him some Bat-Acillin. In the very next scene, Robin is up and about, jumping and clicking his heels as if it never happened. It’s absolutely ludicrous, but 100% fits in Batman‘s world.
5/10 The Bat-Ray Brought Any High-Speed Chase To A Close
Batman ’66 sure did love its car chases, and the Bat-Ray was Batman’s one-stop shop for ending them. Since Batman is strictly a non-lethal hero, he didn’t deploy any Mad Max or Fast and Furious tricks to get the upper hand. Batman used his Bat-Ray, a sort of ion/emp laser beam that disabled the villain’s vehicle.
How does this work without disabling the Batmobile, and why does it shoot out of the headlights of all things? In perfect Batman ’66 fashion, the series never bothers to explain how it works; it just shows off its flashy toy. The fact that its very first use results in an explosive crash really demonstrates the mix of silliness and awesome action that the series is famous for.
4/10 The Batmobile’s Anti-Theft Activator Is Goofy In All The Right Ways
Today, Batman uses everything from biometric scanners to an electric field to protect the Batmobile from theft, but that wasn’t so easy with an open-top Batmobile back in 1966. Instead, in the very first episode, when the Riddler tries to steal the Batmobile, Batman’s theft prevention methods are put on full display.
Robin disguises the anti-theft activator as the ignition, so when Riddler attempts to drive away with his prize, he instead sets off fireworks. Batman’s ingenious theft protection is to set off fireworks to allow anyone to track a stolen Batmobile. It’s ridiculous, but it’s funny in just the right way, and while it may be silly, it was effective, forcing Riddler to abandon his attempts.
3/10 Batman And Robin’s Bat-Shields Defy All Logic
Since Batman doesn’t use guns, he has to take steps to nullify the advantages guns give his opponents. Sometimes, he uses his Batarangs to knock them away, smoke bombs to block enemies’ sights, or (in the Arkham series) he disables them with advanced tech, but in Batman ’66, it got pretty silly, even by the silly standards of the show.
Batman and Robin used portable shields made of bulletproof glass that Batman kept in his utility belt. How, exactly, did Batman break the laws of physics, and not the glass, to store a collapsible shield in his belt? No idea, but watching it makes for a great comedic moment.
2/10 Batman And Robin’s Bat-Poles Were The First Sign Of The Silliness
In the pilot episode, before Batman and Robin even appeared in their costumes, one of the very first signs of the behavior of the Dynamic Duo was the Bat-Poles, and they made it crystal clear just how campy of a show the audience was in for.
The Bat-Poles are, inexplicably and hilariously, clearly labeled as the “Bat-Poles” that lead into the Batcave, and are also marked specifically for Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson. So, if anyone (such as Aunt Harriet) happened to somehow accidentally open the secret entrance, there would be no possible deniability of its purpose, and that just makes it funnier. Batman and Robin always leave the poles already changed into their costumes, however that works.
1/10 Batman: The Movie’s Bat-Shark-Repellent Is Iconic
Batman: The Movie is nonsensical even by the standards of the show. But it is admirable that it manages to distill every aspect of the show into a film, utilizing famous villains from the original series like Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman, and famously contains some memorable moments.
Really, what would any discussion of Adam West’s Batman be without Bat-Shark-Repellent? The gadget is the epitome of the show’s hilarious take on the over-prepared Batman, and the fact that the shark then falls back into the ocean and explodes is the perfect encapsulation of the series’ over-the-top comedy.

Why Is The Crypto Market Down Today? Cointelegraph
Why Is The Crypto Market Down Today? – Cointelegraph https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/why-is-the-crypto-market-down-today-cointelegraph/
Crypto prices are falling again on Oct. 13 after Bitcoin (BTC) price dipped to a three-week low at $18,200, but what is behind the fresh wave of selling?
The most likely culprit on the day is a hotter-than-expected consumer price index (CPI) report that showed consumer prices rising by 0.4% in September. Compared to a year ago, consumer prices are now 8.2% higher, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The CPI report showed similar upticks in other categories, with the core CPI rising by 0.6% month-to-month since September and by 6.6% over the past 12 months, when food and energy prices are removed.
Meanwhile, nonfarm payrolls added 263,000 in September, and the unemployment rate dropped to 3.5%.
In brief, rising inflation is the absolute last thing the Federal Reserve wants to see. The Fed’s rate hikes are meant to cool off the economy and put a damper on high inflation, so the Oct. 13 higher-than-expected report is likely to translate into another round of 0.75-basis-point hikes in the upcoming months.
In response to the report, Bitcoin price shed nearly 5% and Ether (ETH) dropped by 6% before both regained a majority of their losses in intraday trading. The fact that BTC and Ether are trading above their daily lows suggests that traders had anticipated an unfavorable CPI report and that the negative newsflow was already priced in.
Similar to BTC, the Dow and S&P 500 also nursed losses following the CPI report, but both indexes are set to close the day in the black with a 3% and 2.72% gain, respectively.
While the short-term reaction to the inflation report might inspire confidence from day traders, the general economic outlook remains bleak, and the high correlation between crypto and equities markets could translate for further downside for Bitcoin price if talk of higher interest rate hikes begins to dominate news headlines.
There are also a number of economic events occurring in mid-October that could continue to pressure crypto prices. The following dates highlight important economic events that have a history of impacting investor sentiment in the crypto market:
Oct. 17: Q3 earnings season begins
Oct. 28: Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index
In addition to these upcoming events, the strength of the United States dollar and what appears to be a serious escalation in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continue to weigh on all markets.
Let’s take a deeper look into three reasons why crypto prices keep falling in 2022.
Federal Reserve interest rate hikes
Raising interest rates increases the cost of borrowing money for consumers and businesses. This has the knock-on effect of raising business operational costs, the costs of goods and services, production costs, wages, and eventually, the cost of nearly everything.
High, unsupressable inflation is the primary reason the United States Federal Reserve is raising interest rates. And since rate hikes began in March 2022, Bitcoin and the broader crypto market have been in a correction.
When monetary policy or metrics that measure the strength of the economy shift, risk assets tend to signal, or move, earlier than equities. In 2021, the Fed started signaling its plans to raise interest rates eventually, and data shows Bitcoin price sharply correcting by December 2021. In a way, Bitcoin and Ethereum were the canaries in the coal mine that signaled what lay ahead for equities markets.
If inflation begins to taper, the health of the economy improves, or the Fed begins to signal a pivot in its current monetary policy, risk assets like Bitcoin and altcoins could again be the “canaries in the coal mine” by reflecting the return of risk-on sentiment from investors.
The persistent threat of regulation
The cryptocurrency industry and regulators have a long history of not getting along either due to various misconceptions or mistrust over the actual use case of digital assets. Without a working framework for crypto sector regulation, different countries and states have a plethora of conflicting policies on how cryptocurrencies are classified as assets and precisely what constitutes a legal payment system.
The lack of clarity on this matter weighs on growth and innovation within the sector, and many analysts believe that the mainstreaming of cryptocurrencies cannot happen until a more universally agreed upon and understood set of laws is enacted.
Risk assets are heavily impacted by investor sentiment, and this trend extends to Bitcoin and altcoins. To date, the threat of unfriendly cryptocurrency regulations or, in the worst case, an outright ban continues to impact crypto prices on a nearly monthly basis.
Scams and Ponzis triggered liquidations and repeat blows to investor confidence
Scams, Ponzi schemes and sharp market volatility have also played a significant role in crypto prices crashing throughout 2022. Bad news and events that compromise market liquidity tend to cause catastrophic outcomes due to the lack of regulation, the youth of the cryptocurrency industry and the market being relatively small compared with equities markets.
The implosion of Terra’s LUNA and Celsius Network as well as misuse of leverage and client funds by Three Arrows Capital (3AC) were each responsible for successive blows to asset prices within the crypto market. Bitcoin is currently the largest asset by market capitalization in the sector, and historically, altcoin prices tend to follow whichever direction BTC price goes.
As the Terra and LUNA ecosystem collapsed on itself, Bitcoin price corrected sharply due to multiple liquidations occurring within Terra — and investor sentiment tanked.
The same happened with even greater magnitude when Voyager, 3AC and Celsius collapsed, erasing tens of billions in investor and protocol funds.
Related: Bitcoin analysts and traders say BTC’s low volatility is ‘a calm before the storm’
What to expect for the rest of 2022 through 2023
The factors impacting falling prices within the crypto market are driven by Federal Reserve policy, meaning the Fed’s power to raise, pause or lower rates will continue to have a direct impact on Bitcoin price, ETH price and altcoin prices.
In the meantime, investors’ appetite for risk is likely to remain muted, and potential crypto traders might consider waiting for signs that U.S. inflation has peaked and for the Federal Reserve to begin using language that is indicative of a policy pivot.

U.S. Says Orange County Systematically Violated Rights Of Criminal Defendants Reuters
U.S. Says Orange County Systematically Violated Rights Of Criminal Defendants – Reuters https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-says-orange-county-systematically-violated-rights-of-criminal-defendants-reuters/
WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department on Thursday released a scathing new report that found that prosecutors and sheriffs in Orange County, California, had improperly used a jailhouse informant program in ways that routinely violated the constitutional rights of criminal defendants.
The 63-page report caps a nearly six-year civil rights investigation, known as a “pattern or practice” probe, by the Civil Rights Division into the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The probe, which was started in December 2016, focused on local law enforcement’s use of a jailhouse informant program and whether those informants were used improperly to elicit incriminating statements from other criminal defendants.

The Justice Department’s report concludes that from 2007 through 2016, Orange County violated criminal defendants’ constitutional rights to be represented by counsel, as well as their 14th Amendment due process rights in which prosecutors are required to disclose to them any evidence that is exculpatory and could assist with their defense.
Although the investigation focused on prior misconduct, the report said that Orange County has yet to correct all of the problems.
“Restoring trust in Orange County law enforcement will require recognition and remediation of the harms caused by the law enforcement practices described in this report,” the report says.
It adds that although Orange County has taken some steps to better handle its informant program and provide better disclosures to defendants, “more work remains to be done.”
“It has been eight years since much of the misconduct came to light,” the department added, saying that the district attorney’s office “has still not taken adequate steps to ensure that prosecutors understand and carry out their constitutional disclosure obligations.”
Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said he looked forward to the Department Of Justice reviewing his department’s current procedures.
“I am confident they will find our current practices have addressed many of their recommendations, and anticipate a prompt and complete resolution to this matter,” he said.
In a statement, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said his office has been willingly cooperating with the investigation, and he noted the county stopped using the jailhouse informant program in 2016.
“Throughout this multi-year investigation, I repeatedly asked the DOJ for input on the numerous reforms I have implemented, including the prohibition of utilizing a jail house informant without the express consent of the elected district attorney,” he said.
He added that he also conducted his own outside investigation, and fired a senior prosecutor for failing to disclose information to a defense attorney.
Pattern or practice civil rights probes typically take several years to complete.
While sometimes adverse findings in pattern or practice investigations can lead to litigation, the parties usually try to resolve the concerns first. A department spokesperson said the department is negotiating with Orange County to implement reforms.

UH News
More than 150 University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa students from a variety of majors took advantage of a rare opportunity to meet one-on-one with technology industry professionals from organizations such as Microsoft, Amazon, LinkedIn and Activision Blizzard, to learn about technology career opportunities.
The event on October 11, at Kuykendall Hall began with an introduction of more than 20 professionals, which included software engineers, company founders, business leaders and cybersecurity experts, followed by a one-hour mixer where students were able to chat face-to-face with the speakers.
The event was hosted by the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship (PACE) in UH Mānoa’s Shidler College of Business, Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mānoa, ThriveHI and Builders VC.
Amanda Nitta is a UH Mānoa senior majoring in computer science and data science, and vice president and chief of operations for the Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mānoa. Nitta was one of the event’s student organizers and gained knowledge about how to apply data science and management in a future career.
“This is a great opportunity for these students because of the fact that it gives exposure to what they are able to do, and be able to apply what they learned and see that they are not restricted to one thing such as software engineering,” Nitta said. “They have so many other capabilities within them to do interdisciplinary work and have different mindsets going into the workforce.”
Narrowing the pay gap
Kanaʻi Gooding is a computer science student and president of the Association for Computing Machinery at UH Mānoa. Gooding said many of the tech professionals featured at the event are remote workers for companies based on the continental U.S. He said there is a disparity between salaries offered by those companies and salaries offered by companies based in Hawaiʻi. Gooding’s goal for the event was to begin a dialogue to take steps forward so Hawaiʻi-based companies can match the salaries of their continental U.S.-based counterparts.
“This is just one of the many aspects that we are trying to attack the problem with,” Gooding said. “One of our big asks for the professionals here was, ‘Hey, we’re going to have the students ask you your salary. Please be ok with us asking and you answering.’ Hopefully that spreads loudly across the community.”
Creating a path into tech
Kevin Shin (far left) shares career advice with current UH students.
Kevin Shin, a senior software engineer at LinkedIn, shared his manaʻo (thoughts and perspectives) with UH Mānoa’s current students. Shin graduated from UH Mānoa 2014 with a degree in mechanical engineering, before pursuing a graduate degree at Stanford University.
His goal for the event was “to let the students know that there is a path to tech and people from Hawaiʻi can make it. There are a bunch out here doing it.”
“Students at the University of Hawaiʻi are just as capable of taking on tech careers, including tech-centered entrepreneurship, as their mainland counterparts. Because of Hawaiʻi’s distance from major technological hubs, however, local students may be learning about these careers from the internet or other secondhand sources,” PACE Executive Director Sandra Fujiyama said. “PACE, along with ThriveHI, ACM@Mānoa and Builders VC, recognized the need to close that gap and connect students directly to people who know what it is to work in tech today.”

Sonker Festival Now Set For Oct. 29 Mount Airy News
Sonker Festival Now Set For Oct. 29 – Mount Airy News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/sonker-festival-now-set-for-oct-29-mount-airy-news/
This scene of sonkers being served up for eager customers will be repeated later this month at the historic Edwards-Franklin House,
After being thwarted by the coronavirus for two years, and Hurricane Ian more recently, the Surry County Sonker Festival has been rescheduled for Oct. 29.
The 41st-annual fall event originally was set for Oct. 1 at the historic Edwards-Franklin House, but postponed due to bad weather anticipated locally that weekend from the remnants of Hurricane Ian.
This was after the festival was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.
Now with the pandemic and hurricane out of the picture, organizers with the Surry County Historical Society are excited that it can now be held after an absence of more than three years.
The festival is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 29. When earlier postponing the event due to the weather, officials of the historical group initially were unsure about an alternate date, but it was disclosed this week.
Admission to the festival is free and open to the public.
An updated announcement from the group’s president, Dr. Annette Ayers, shows that the same slate of activities is on tap despite the four-week delay.
This will include old-time and bluegrass music performed by The Roaring Gap Rattlers and other attractions including flatfoot dancing, quilters, basketry, a pottery display, an exhibit featuring 18th- and 19th-century artifacts and more.
Tours of the Edwards-Franklin House, which dates to 1799, also will be available.
And, of course, there will be the sonkers, a type of deep-dish fruit dessert that originated in this area.
Sonker servings will be available for $4 each, with beverages costing $1.
Five different sonker flavors are on the menu, blackberry, sweet potato, peach, strawberry and cherry, Ayers has said.
Those attending the Sonker Festival are encouraged to bring lawn chairs so they can sit in the yard of the Edwards-Franklin House and enjoy the music and dancing while munching away.
The house is located at 4132 Haystack Road west of Mount Airy.
In the past, people have come from Surry and elsewhere in North Carolina along with various states such as Virginia, New York, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

The spice company McCormick & Company introduced its Pumpkin Pie Spice nearly 90 years ago to give bakers a flavorful boost when making their pumpkin pies. Through the years, the popular blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice has expanded far beyond dessert to all things food and drink, including beer, cereal and even Spam. But most pumpkin spice aficionados will point to the 2003 Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte (or PSL for the truly enamored) as the treat that turned the flavor profile into a bona fide obsession. To wit, a spokesperson for Starbucks told us the PSL is the company’s most popular seasonal beverage of all time, selling more than 600 million in the U.S. since the launch.
The PSL may have sparked a cultural phenomenon, but the demand for all pumpkin-spice-flavored and pumpkin-spice-scented items continues to grow. One report found that pumpkin spice product sales have increased about 47 percent over the past five years, and according to data from the analytics company NielsenIQ, U.S. sales for pumpkin-spice-flavored grocery items reached a record $236 million at the end of July 2022.
For fun ways to enjoy the pumpkin spice season, check out the following events and destinations across the country.

Seattle
We have to start with the granddaddy of the pumpkin spice infatuation — the original Starbucks location at Pike Place Market in Seattle, which opened in 1971.
The coveted Pumpkin Spice Latte is a combination of espresso, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, topped with whipped cream. Grab a Grande to-go before a walking tour of Pike Place Market with Seattle Free Walking Tours (reservations required; “Pay what you feel”).
Can’t make it to Seattle? At-home baristas can re-create the classic with Starbucks’ pumpkin-spice-flavored coffee, cold brew concentrate, creamer and iced latte. New this year is the canned Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Nitro Cold Brew, which is infused with nitrogen micro-bubbles.

Pumpkin Spice Festival, Valdosta, Georgia
The country’s largest Pumpkin Spice Festival is underway at the Wild Adventures theme park in southern Georgia. In addition to the rides and shows throughout the park, foodies can indulge in all things pumpkin spice with a festival pass Friday through Sunday through Oct. 30.
The festival pass is an additional fee to park admission ($30.99 for non-season pass holders). The pumpkin spice specialties include pumpkin spice funnel cakes, fries and the Mighty Pumpkin Colossal Shake topped with a large piece of pumpkin pie. Festival weekends feature Great Pumpkin LumiNights and its jungle of jack-o’-lanterns and sunflowers.

Astra Lumina Enchanted Night Walk, Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Lumina Night Walks, an innovative storytelling experience in the outdoors, makes its U.S. debut this month with Astra Lumina Enchanted Night Walk at the Anakeesta theme park in Gatlinburg. Set in a Great Smoky Mountains forest, the innovative nighttime walk is filled with lighting, sounds and projections that share the magic of the stars in an enchanting way.
Before or after Astra Lumina, warm up with hot drinks such as a Pumpkin Praline Latte, Pumpkin Spice Latte or Pumpkin Caramel Latte (all of which can be made as cappuccinos) at Pearl’s Pie in the Sky; or enjoy adult beverages at Anakeesta Mountain, including Gypsy Circus’s Fire Roasted Pumpkin Cider, TailGate Brewery’s Pumpkin Spiced Latte Milk Stout or The Great Pumpkin Mojito, made with gin, pumpkin puree, fresh orange and mint, served with a pumpkin spice rim.
PHOTO BY: The Great Pumpkin Farm
The Great Pumpkin Farm, Clarence, New York
Experience the family-friendly festivities at The Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence, just outside Buffalo in western New York. Open daily through Oct. 31, the on-the-farm fun includes a hay maze, petting zoo, playground with a pumpkin express train and plenty more for all ages. Watch as pumpkins are shot out of a cannon, soaring 3,000 feet before hitting the ground (weekends only). Festival weekends include the World Pumpkin Pie Eating Competition, a zombie corn maze and more.
Pumpkins are the main attraction on the farm, and there are “zillions” from which to choose to take home, including decorative orange or white pumpkins, and small and large gourds for decorating. If you can’t wait to bake a pumpkin pie at home, pick one up from the on-site Pumpkin Palace Bakery, or some pumpkin donuts. Or why not both?

Minneapolis
Last year, the website Roasty Coffee reported that pumpkin spice lattes were most popular in Minneapolis, based on Google search data. After Minneapolis, the cities of Miami, Atlanta, Seattle and Denver rounded out the top five. The report showed that September is the most popular time of year that coffee drinkers search for “pumpkin spice latte.”
A mix of well-known companies and independent coffee shops can be found throughout the city (the coffee giant Caribou Coffee started in Minneapolis in 1992, and the headquarters and roastery are still there). In addition to Starbucks, find your PSL fix at Dunn Brothers Coffee, Five Watt Coffee and Gray Fox Coffee & Wine Bar, to name a few great local coffee shops. Bakeries that feature goodies with delicious pumpkin spice flavors include Breadsmith, Glam Doll Donuts and Sarah Jane’s Bakery Northeast.

Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt said Thursday Javier Cruz-Corraliza, 34, has been formally charged with the assault on the youths, ages 8 and 12, who were injured in the incident. Both suffered gunshot wounds, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. that evening along Route 60.
Witnesses, according to the Dunkirk Police Department, said a southbound vehicle on Route 60 was passed by another vehicle, at which point shots were fired. Afterward, occupants inside the vehicle struck by the gunfire sought safety and medical assistance at the Route 60 Red Apple Kwik Fill in Fredonia.
Both juveniles were transported to Brooks-TLC Hospital System in Dunkirk.
Cruz-Corraliza was arraigned Thursday on a four-count indictment in Chautauqua County Court by Judge David Foley who set bail at $25,000 cash or $50,000 property bond. He faces charges of first-degree assault, a felony, two counts of first-degree attempted assault and second-degree assault.
Cruz-Corraliza is represented by Nelson Torre, a Buffalo attorney, and is due back in court on Nov. 28 for a discovery conference. Schmidt offered his thanks to the Dunkirk Police Department for their thorough work on this case.
