Cardona today announced the recipients of the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership for 2022. All nine school leaders from the 2022 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools will be honored during the National Blue Ribbon Schools awards ceremony Nov. 3 in Washington. “As a former principal, I understand the vital role school leaders play in shaping school culture and welcoming learning environments, improving student achievement outcomes, and empowering teachers to meet the needs of their students,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “The nine school leaders receiving this year’s Terrel Bell awards have raised the bar for building positive school climates, increasing achievement, and finding creative ways to nurture, engage, and support students, families, educators, and school staff. At a time when principals and other school leaders face many challenges, from addressing students’ unmet mental health needs to accelerating their academic recovery from the pandemic, the Department of Education is proud to recognize the essential work they do each day.” Named for the second U.S. secretary of education, Terrel H. Bell, the Bell Award honors school leaders who are committed to education as a powerful and liberating force in people’s lives. The award is part of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Principals are nominated by their school communities during the final stages of the National Blue Ribbon Schools application process. The U.S. Department of Education, together with the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Association for Middle Level Education, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, present the Bell Awards to principals of National Blue Ribbon Schools for their outstanding work and the vital role they play in guiding their students and schools to excellence, frequently under challenging circumstances. Agent Life: Magical Vacation Planner’s Founders Driven To Reach Goals – Travel Weekly https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/agent-life-magical-vacation-planners-founders-driven-to-reach-goals-travel-weekly/ Jamie and J.J. Eubanks, the husband-and-wife duo behind Magical Vacation Planner in Mitchell, Ind., have a goal: They want their agency to be a recognizable national brand, and they have a firm plan to get there. “A goal without action, it’s just something written down on paper,” Jamie said. “We set goals, but we know how to get from point A to point B.” That includes some strategic partnerships that Magical Vacation Planner, or MVP, has recently fostered, like with Nascar driver Chase Briscoe and television host Denella Ri’chard. Related: TV travel hosts find ways to connect with viewers beyond the living room “J.J. and I are both very goal-driven, and we have some crazy goals,” Jamie said. “But we don’t just set the goals. We look at them and we say, ‘How are we going to get there?'” MVP, now a top seller with brands like Disney, Universal, Apple Leisure Group, Sandals and Royal Caribbean, is a story years in the making.  Jamie always wanted to work for Disney. But in 1992, when she was in college, a friend introduced her to J.J., who was playing basketball professionally in Italy at the time. The two kept in touch via letters and calls, and when he returned to the U.S., they started dating. They were married before his next season began, and once she graduated, Jamie started traveling with him. That lasted for 14 years, and all through that time, Jamie was never far from the Disney world. She would bring books about Disney on their travels, and when the Internet came into prominence, she spent time planning their next vacations. Then, J.J. made the decision to retire while he was still on top of his game. He took a position with a corporation in their area, and Jamie ended up working as a bank teller, but after being passed up for multiple promotions, she decided to find something else. Already known as the “Disney lady” in her circles, she found the travel industry and started her agency. “It really just started as a passion and just having that connection with people,” Jamie said. She only sold Disney at first and referred other business to other agencies. Then, four or five years in, friends wanted to join her, and she started onboarding them as independent contractors. For the past 16 years, MVP has grown. While the agency doesn’t disclose its number of ICs, J.J. said its members conference attracts around 600 each year. A recent Magical Vacation Planner team leader retreat at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Magical Vacation Planner MVP targets new-to-industry advisors and puts them through an in-house training program called MVP University. It pointedly does not take anyone who has worked for another agency. “We are actually expanding the travel industry by developing the advisors that are coming in now,” J.J. said. This year, J.J. said, MVP has doubled its prepandemic sales. With that growth has come a restructuring: Three vice presidents oversee its business units (MVP Parks, MVP Cruising and MVP Getaways), and a COO helps with the organizational management. In addition to education, it offers its agents a full marketing suite and support. And now, Jamie and J.J. are working on extending their brand in the U.S. They recently sponsored Briscoe, the Nascar driver, who J.J. said shares “the MVP culture” in that he’s a positive and humble person. They used an outside consultancy to help identify opportunities for the agency. Nascar has 90 million fans, J.J. said, or more than one-quarter of the country. “If we are striving to make MVP a household name, this was a great platform for us,” he said. MVP also sponsors Ri’chard’s “Traveling With Denella Ri’chard” television show. “I think that is on the verge of exploding,” J.J. said of the show.  %

Supply Chain Shortcomings Could Hit Canada’s Grain Harvest – Business News – Castanet.net https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/supply-chain-shortcomings-could-hit-canadas-grain-harvest-business-news-castanet-net/ Photo: The Canadian Press This year’s grain harvest has farmers hopeful it will make up for last year’s poor crop yield, yet supply chain stalls could put a further wrench in agriculture profits. The Western Grain Elevator Association said that capacity remains stable but not comfortable, as grain elevator levels reach 85 per cent, leading to fears of grain delivery delays. Western Canada’s grain harvest is an estimated 75 million tonnes this year, said Wade Sobkowich, executive director for the Western Grain Elevator Association, as drought, floods and wildfires contributed to a below average harvest of 49 billion tonnes the year prior. Sobkowich said 85 per cent is an acceptable fulfilment level. When the rate drops below that, railcar delays impact the entire supply chain, leading to a buildup at the grain elevators and slow down farmer deliveries. “Farmer’s don’t get paid until they deliver,” he said. Last year, one in nine people were employed by the agriculture sector, contributing $135 billion to Canada’s gross domestic product, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Currently, farmers are ordering around 10,000 to 11,000 railcars per week, said Sobkowich. The AG Transport Coalition’s most recent grain report from September, said that Canadian National Railway fulfilled 88 per cent of hopper cars and Canadian Pacific Railway fulfilled 77 per cent, at an increase of 73 per cent the week prior. CP spokeswoman Salem Woodrow, said in a statement that the company is prepared to meet the transportation needs of grain customers this crop year. She said CP ramped up hopper car delivery at the start of the crop year, matching record order fulfilment and port unload levels over September. Sobkowich said the discrepancy in the numbers between CP and CN is due to the recording methods of CP as the railway company calculates the demand they accept rather than legitimate demand. “Probably, in CP’s view they are performing better than what our numbers show,” said Sobkowich. CN also said it has made record grain movements, as 2.62 million tonnes of grain move from Western Canada in September, said CN spokesman Jonathan Abecassis. Although, Abecassis said CN did have a slow start to the season, as the harvest was slow to get underway and grain supplies were tight given the impact of last year’s drought. “Unfortunately, getting trains moving again is a progressive process, it doesn’t all just happen at once,” said Abecassis in a statement. Sobkowich said CN seems to be holding at an acceptable level, “although of course we would like to see them get closer to 100 per cent.” He said the WGEA will continue to watch fulfilment levels closely but has some concerns about how delivery stalls could persist into the fall. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced an $8 million investment in new grain terminal equipment in the Port of Montréal earlier this month to improve the quality of the grain-cleaning service, optimize traffic flow in the yard, and increase capacity for loading and handling containers. “Thanks to these funds, grain exports here at the Port of Montréal will be able to move more than double,” said Alghabra at a news conference. In a phone interview, Alghabra said a new rail regulation will come into force, that requires rail companies to provide more information about operations and performance. However, the details of the regulation have yet to be announced. The minister’s announcements come after the National Supply Chain Task Force said in a final report that urgent action from both government and industry is needed to keep goods flowing in Canada.

Aiming For Longevity – Harvard Health https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/aiming-for-longevity-harvard-health/ Living to 100 is more common than ever. How can you strive for this milestone? Helen Mongelia’s 102 years reflect the mysterious alchemy of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that coalesce to aid longevity. Fresh food, consistent movement, emotional resilience, and a family full of long-living relatives mark the centenarian’s colorful life span, which began in 1919 while Woodrow Wilson occupied the White House. Longevity like Mrs. Mongelia’s remains extraordinary, with an estimated one in 6,000 people in the United States reaching 100 nowadays, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging. More than 100,000 were 100 or older in 2019, triple the number in 1980 who’d passed their 100th birthday. TIP Tackles Metaverse Network Needs Mobile World Live
TIP Tackles Metaverse Network Needs – Mobile World Live https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/tip-tackles-metaverse-network-needs-mobile-world-live/ 19 OCT 2022 The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) moved to ensure networks will be capable of living up to the promise of the metaverse, forming a working group comprised of representatives from Telefonica, T-Mobile US and Telecom Italia’s wholesale unit Sparkle, among others, to focus on the connectivity element. TIP stated the Metaverse-Ready Networks Project Group will focus on delivering network architectures capable of delivering metaverse experiences. It named the operators’ representatives along with those from Microsoft and Meta Platforms as the first co-chairs of the group, with the first meeting to convene during the organisation’s Fyuz event taking place in Madrid from 25 October to 27 October. The metaverse group will be tasked with developing “industry-wide network capabilities, specific APIs and mechanisms” needed to offer end-to-end connectivity for “immersive applications”, TIP stated. TIP explained the performance of networks will become increasingly important as metaverse services are developed in fields including education, healthcare and remote working. “As they evolve over the next decade, future immersive services will require more network capabilities to support greater agility, programmability, performance and reliability”, TIP added. Ron Marquardt, T-Mobile VP of advanced technologies and innovation, argued the metaverse could only be achieved “through industry collaboration”. He said the working group will encourage other communication service providers, “technology makers and content creators” to join. Telefonica head of network platforms Alexandre Harmand cited access to work on open RAN, optical and packet transport infrastructure by other TIP working groups as a key benefit. The Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde Nanny Drama Role Reversal Romper
The Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde Nanny Drama Role Reversal Romper
The Jason Sudeikis Olivia Wilde Nanny Drama Role Reversal – Romper https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/the-jason-sudeikis-olivia-wilde-nanny-drama-role-reversal-romper/ Salad dressing is having a moment. The innocuous condiment has shockingly taken center stage in the Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis nanny scandal. Among many sordid details revealed in an interview the nanny gave to the Daily Mail, it seems that Wilde dared to make her special salad dressing for her hot pop star boyfriend, thereby allegedly pushing Sudeikis right over the ex-fiancé edge. And while dressing-gate has launch a smorgasbord of memes, there’s another angle to this gossipy saga that most have missed. The delicious twist we didn’t expect is that we’re finally seeing a jilted man take over the undesired title of being the overly dramatic and “hysterical” one. For months now, Wilde and Sudeikis have weathered the headlines dissecting the minutia of their unfortunate split. Sudeikis serving custody papers to the mother of his children in public, while she was on stage at a Film Festival promoting her latest movie may be all the evidence needed to be squarely Team Olivia. But even the now acrimonious former couple took a break from their bitterness to issue a joint statement calling their former nanny’s claims “false” and “scurrilous.” And what exactly were these claims? #1. The run-me-over ultimatum. There is truly nothing that could be more dramatic than flinging yourself under the running car of your exiting-paramour in a forlorn attempt to make her stay put. And that’s exactly what the nanny claims Sudeikis did when Wilde made a dash for the door to fly off to meet her dreamy British boyfriend Harry Styles. Not since every single undignified rose ceremony in every single episode of The Bachelor has there been such a desperate (and dangerous) attempt to make an ex reconsider saying sayonara. #2. The suspicious Apple watch. Women are more often portrayed as the phone-snoopers and password-breakers, trying by any means necessary to get into their man’s DMs or text messages to see if he’s in fact straying. (Kim Kardashian once played amateur hacker, breaking into the voicemail of one of Khloé’s cheating boyfriends.) The nanny alleges Sudeikis discovered Wilde’s relationship with Styles via messages on an Apple watch. Did Wilde in fact leave said watch behind, or was Sudeikis going all Geek Squad on his fiancé’s gadgets to catch her in the act by any means necessary? #3. Hashtagged texts infused with delusional optimism. One of the receipts produced in the Daily Mail expose is a supposed text that Sudeikis sent to the nanny on Jan. 17, 2021 at 3:59 p.m. smack-dab in the middle of his crumbling relationship. “You are a good person. With an amazing heart. Please don’t think for a second you will be ‘punished’ for any of this. Love will win. #believe.” Not only did this text prove to be untrue, as the nanny says she got sacked, but it’s hard to believe that Sudeikis was physically capable of the cheesiness required to type out #believe, the aphorism coined by his almost offensively upbeat creation, Ted Lasso. The SNL alum also allegedly replayed Wilde’s voicemails for the nanny to listen to and dissect, a classic vengeful middle school move. #4. Copious amounts of man tears. The nanny also claimed that Sudeikis cried. Like, a whole lot of “out of control crying.” And while there is of course absolutely nothing wrong with showing feelings via healthy waterworks after the end of a meaningful relationship, it’s refreshing to see that all this unadulterated emotion was in fact shown by a man. #5. The ban on fantastic music. Not since the movie Footloose has an edict against music been so devastating. According to the nanny, when Sudeikis learned of his leading lady’s betrayal, he immediately prohibited the playing of Harry Styles’ discography in his home. Infidelity aside, it’s pretty cruel for Sudeikis to ban amazing music, especially in a year dominated by Styles’ boppy new album. The tables, they have turned. But beyond the characterization of Sudeikis as histrionic, let’s also take note of Wilde in her unflappable glory. Through it all, the single mom remained cool as a cucumber, thoroughly enjoying her Hot Mom Summer. (Remember 2021? She may have literally been the only one.) The director never seemed all that interested in conventional relationships (as evidenced by the fact that after seven years, she never married her fiancé in the first place), and she keeps flipping the gender roles in the Hollywood break-up script. She took a move right from the playbook of many so-called male players who wrap up one relationship and immediately engage in another with a much younger partner. And if you believe the fired nanny, Wilde’s also the one who made the first move to smooch Harry Styles. But while Wilde has had to face the blatant sexism and double standards in media coverage, until now, the beloved Ted Lasso star has escaped mostly unscathed. And though it’s never cool to revel in anyone’s heartbreak and take too much pleasure in revelations about what was clearly a toxic workplace, I must admit to some Sudeikis-induced smugness. Is it a little gratifying to see a dumped man depicted as the pathetic, crazy ex-boyfriend for once? You bet your balsamic it is.

Bitcoin Price Will Hit $100K In 2023; Stocks, Crypto To See ‘bull Market’ – Tone Vays – Kitco NEWS https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/bitcoin-price-will-hit-100k-in-2023-stocks-crypto-to-see-bull-market-tone-vays-kitco-news/ (Kitco News) – Bitcoin‘s price will reach $100,000 in 2023, and stocks and crypto will experience a “bull market” as European money flees to the United States, said Tone Vays, derivatives trader, crypto analyst, and conference organizer. “I would be surprised if we’re not approaching that $100,000 [Bitcoin price] some time next year,” he said. “I think that there will be a lot of speculative money flowing into the equities market and into crypto markets.” Vays claimed that “capital flows out of Europe” and into the United States could trigger Bitcoin‘s price increase. He also suggested that fear of missing out (FOMO) could motivate investors to purchase more Bitcoin. “They missed their chance catching the low in 2018,” he said. “This is one more chance… if [investors] ever get an opportunity to buy Bitcoin again under $10,000, they will jump at it immediately.” Vays spoke with Michelle Makori, Editor-in-Chief and Lead Anchor at Kitco News. Bitcoin: A Unique Asset Vays highlighted that Bitcoin cannot be confiscated and is “censorship resistant,” since the cryptocurrency is decentralized. He said that these unique attributes of Bitcoin would lead to more adoption. “I see Bitcoin as the only decentralized cryptocurrency,” he said. “It is censorship resistant, and you can send it to anyone, anywhere.” Vays pointed to recent examples of governments freezing or confiscating bank accounts for political reasons to argue that demand for Bitcoin will rise. “We’re witnessing governments, central banks and regular banks freeze bank accounts,” he claimed. “This year alone, we’ve witnessed the West and the United States… confiscate wealth because people had a Russian passport… prior to that, Trudeau and Canada froze people’s bank accounts for a $20 donation for a political contribution… you can’t do that with Bitcoin.” Bitcoin Price Support Although Vays is forecasting a $100K price of Bitcoin, he said that the cryptocurrency could bottom to a $14,000 “support level” before reversing and reaching new highs. However, he cautioned that Bitcoin’s unpredictability makes determining a definite price support difficult. “Because Bitcoin is so illiquid, it is a lot more difficult to identify a true support level,” he said. “There are no circuit breakers like we have in traditional markets, so whenever Bitcoin crashes, it tends to become very unpredictable… but I am looking at that $14,000 level.” He added that he is “holding a cash position,” so that if Bitcoin drops to $14,000, he will buy more in anticipation of future gains. Benton County’s average home sale price through the first nine months of 2022 reached $401,950. That’s up 16.3% from $345,463 through September last year. Washington County’s average home sale price through September was $361,971, up 15.8% year-over-year from $312,467. That’s according to data from the Matrix software platform used by the Northwest Arkansas Board of Realtors (NABOR) and provided to the Northwest Arkansas Business Journal by Marcus Necessary, vice president and executive broker with Weichert, Realtors-The Griffin Co. Meanwhile, as mortgage rates continue rising, year-to-date home sales through the third quarter in Northwest Arkansas’ two most populous counties are down from last year’s period. There were 8,658 homes sold through September this year in Benton and Washington counties, down 4.3% from 9,051 homes sold through the third quarter last year. Mortgage rates are the obvious culprit. Mortgage News Daily reports that a 30-year fixed rate began the year at 3.3% but ended the third quarter at 6.7%. Higher mortgage payments make it harder for buyers to qualify for loans. The average rate is now north of 7%. The combined sales volume this year through September is up 17.1% — $3.35 billion in the first nine months, compared with $2.86 billion in the first nine months of 2021. In the two-year area combined, September home sales were down nearly 13%, from 1,136 last year to 992 this year. The NABOR data showed 641 home sales worth a combined $253 million in September in Benton County. That compares with 744 and $257 million in the same month a year ago. In Washington County, agents sold 351 homes in September, down from 392 in September 2021, with a combined value of $131.1 million, up from $122.4 million. From a national perspective, Lawrence Yun, National Association of Realtors chief economist, said in a Sept. 28 report that the direction of mortgage rates – upward or downward – is the prime mover for home buying, and decade-high rates have deeply cut into contract signings. “If mortgage rates moderate and the economy continues adding jobs, then home buying should also stabilize,” Yun said. Yun expects the economy will remain sluggish throughout the remainder of this year. “Only when inflation calms down will we see mortgage rates begin to steady,” he said.

Former Comet Owner Joins Race For 400m Matalan Takeover Sky News
Former Comet Owner Joins Race For 400m Matalan Takeover Sky News
Former Comet Owner Joins Race For £400m Matalan Takeover – Sky News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/former-comet-owner-joins-race-for-400m-matalan-takeover-sky-news/ A controversial former owner of Comet, the defunct electricals chain, is among the suitors vying to take control of Matalan, the value-based retailer. Sky News understands that OpCapita, which is led by Henry Jackson, is expected to table an indicative proposal to buy Matalan before a bid deadline on Friday. OpCapita attracted opprobrium a decade ago when it briefly owned Comet, saw it collapse and then recouped tens of millions of pounds even as taxpayers were saddled with a £70m bill. Since then, it has expressed interest in buying British retailers including Homebase and Majestic Wines, although its solitary current UK-based investment is The Football Pools. Its interest in Matalan pits it against rival investment firms including Alteri, which is backed by Apollo Global Management, and John Hargreaves, Matalan’s founder, who is expected to be backed by the feared activist investor Elliott Advisors. Mike Ashley, the Frasers Group tycoon, is also reported to be preparing an offer for Matalan. Matalan, which was founded by Mr Hargreaves in 1985, faces a deadline next year to refinance £350m in debt. It also took a £60m loan from Bantry Bay – in which Elliott owns a stake – as it sought to strengthen its balance sheet ahead of what threatens to be a prolonged slump in consumer sentiment. Based in Liverpool, Matalan employs more than 11,000 people and trades from 230 UK stores. It also operates an e-commerce platform and has more than 50 overseas franchise stores. The company claims to have 11m customers. Like many of its peers, the chain found its finances severely strained by the pandemic, prompting the Monaco-based Mr Hargreaves to provide substantial financial support. In recent months, global inflationary pressures have impaired margins, while supply chain challenges have had an impact on stock availability. Matalan warned during the summer that its “ability to successfully refinance our debts involves geopolitical, economic and market factors outside the direct control of the business”. Mr Hargreaves recently stepped down after a brief return as Matalan’s chairman in order to participate in the bidding process. The Hargreaves family is being advised by Lazard, while Teneo is handling the sale and Perella Weinberg Partners is advising the first-lien – or senior – lenders. OpCapita declined to comment.

Event Aims To Demystify Meatless Meals, Other Healthy Options – Greater Wilmington Business Journal https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/event-aims-to-demystify-meatless-meals-other-healthy-options-greater-wilmington-business-journal/ A celebration of plant-based eating, among other sustainable and healthy lifestyle choices, is taking place this weekend at Riverfront Park.   The second annual Veg-Out Festival will round up vendors with a range of health and wellness specialties for the Oct. 22 event. James Christopher, co-owner of event organizer Cool Wilmington, said the goal is to connect people to information that helps them adopt healthier lifestyles during a free, fun event.   The idea came from Christopher’s wife, fellow co-owner of Cool Wilmington and a “California girl” who attended similar free events while the couple lived in Los Angeles.   “These kinds of events are very popular in California,” Christopher said. “She wanted to bring that concept here.”   Vegetarian and vegan cuisine is one element of healthy living emphasized at the festival, but Christopher said that focus is not meant to exclude anyone.   “You don’t have to be exclusively vegetarian or vegan to come down and enjoy the event,” he said.   Cool Wilmington partnered with Pat Green, local chef and owner of Soulful Twist food truck, to create a menu of vegetarian dishes for sale during the festival. Green came up with a Southern-inspired array of choices including crispy fried green tomatoes stacks layered with fresh mozzarella and balsamic glaze, chipotle mushroom tacos and jalapeno and pimento black bean burgers. Sides of apple coleslaw, okra and hand-cut French fries round out Green’s offerings.   Vegetarian hot dogs by Lisa’s Haute Dogs, vegan ice cream by Vegan Ice Cream Man and Italian lemonade by Island Squeeze are other plant-based provisions available for visitors. Christopher said the lemonade is squeezed by hand at the event.   “They make it right there. It’s not too sweet,” he said.   Some businesses will do demonstrations for those new to vegetarian and vegan cooking. Dojo Fresh will show people how to prepare their plant-based protein crumbles, a substitute for ground meat, and The Green House Restaurant will tout the aeroponic tower gardens used to grow greens and herbs for salads and other vegan fare. Dozens of other vendors slated for the festival include nutritionists, health care providers, green beauty purveyors, fitness instructors and more. Yoga and meditation sessions will take place throughout the day and Christopher encouraged visitors to bring a yoga mat.   Four speakers are scheduled to share insights on topics such as making healthy lifestyle choices sustainable, the therapeutic properties of plants, stress management techniques and face yoga as an alternative to Botox.   “I’ve seen the before and after pictures of people she’s worked with, and it’s a real thing. It really works,” Christopher said of the latter.   The festival kicks off with a “tri-wellness” 5k walk and run, guided yoga and a meditation session at 10 a.m. with vendors opening their booths for business from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Soul Zhang Lu Is Expecting More Authentic Social Connections In The Metaverse SpeedwayMedia.com
Soul Zhang Lu Is Expecting More Authentic Social Connections In The Metaverse SpeedwayMedia.com
Soul Zhang Lu Is Expecting More Authentic Social Connections In The Metaverse – SpeedwayMedia.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/soul-zhang-lu-is-expecting-more-authentic-social-connections-in-the-metaverse-speedwaymedia-com/ Speaking of the future of metaverse, Zhang Lu, founder and CEO of Soul App, expects that there will be a more authentic social experience and genuine connections in the social metaverse, despite that it is a virtual space. Zhang Lu is the one who developed Soul App and she is also currently a pathfinder in the metaverse. In 2021, she put forward the concept of social metaverse, which is positioned as a virtual playground for the younger generations. Now, this virtual social networking is prevalent among Gen Z groups. What’s its magic? How does this platform entail the future of the social metaverse? In a recent interview, Zhang Lu shared her ideas for developing the Soul App. Just like previous generations, Gen Z aspires for authentic social connections It seems that Gen Z is different from all previous generations. They share diversified values and they are believed to be more rebellious toward social conventions. In terms of social networking, they are obsessed with short video platforms like TikTok. However, behind their social behaviors, their aspiration for authentic social connections remained increasingly high. This tendency is also observed on Soul App.  To cater to their demands, Zhang Lu developed a new kind of social networking that is distinct from the social mode favored by other platforms. In Soul metaverse, users are protected by their avatars, which are also the basis for their virtual identity. Moreover, Soul App’s AI would generate an interest graph for them to portray their personality. The AI will subsequently feed them to those with compatible personas. Users regard this platform as a safe zone where they can escape for some moment from the tumultuous outside world. In the virtual platform, they feel it safe to remove their social masks and express their true feelings. As a result, young people naturally choose Soul App for the reason that they can freely explore new relationships and exchange high-quality communications with people who share similar values.  Soul metaverse offers a template of how technology innovates social life The construction of a social metaverse is necessarily built on technological breakthroughs like Artificial Intelligence, and AR/VR. However, many companies have neglected that one of the core components of the metaverse is its social value. The metaverse brought by Soul App is a combination of the two.  Zhang Lu has always seen technology development as the driving force of Soul App and she is continuously increasing R&D investments. Currently, Soul App is leading its peers in formulating virtual avatars in the metaverse. It has previously planned to update its 2D-based avatars to 3D ones and now this mission is put on the agenda. Just recently, Soul App launched its NAWA 3D rendering engine, which is expected to generate 3D avatars based on the characteristics of real persons. With this engine, users can design their unique avatars and fully immerse into the virtual land with a new image. What’s more, Soul metaverse is taking its users to experience a novel social life beyond imagination. On this platform, they can join Chat Parties to share common interests with a group of people. They can also follow the guidance of AI to build social connections. Last but not least, they can communicate with each other through gamified interactions. Soul metaverse is fulfilling the imagination of future social life. The metaverse is both the future of social life and the digital economy Worries concerning the metaverse have long been heard since its birth. After the fever for NFT collections ceased, it seemed that the public immediately turned to the next topic. However, the truth is that this is just one of the necessary stages in the development of new things. The metaverse still remains a heated topic, and its development is closely watched by investors from various industries. The market of the metaverse is booming and this is also observed in Soul App. In other words, the fever for the metaverse economy has never ceased so far. Previously, Zhang Lu led her team to launch the first digital avatar collectibles, the Möbius collections. According to the latest data, more than 24, 000 people have ordered the avatar in advance. Now, Soul metaverse has become a platform that has nurtured the development of the digital economy.  The metaverse is expected to commence its next stage of development. Simultaneously, companies large and small are taking this opportunity to create value and write their stories. Previously, Soul App officially filed its prospectus to Hong Kong Stock Exchange, ready to go public. It is revealed that the overall revenue of Soul App reached 1.28 billion in 2021, up 157.3% year-over-year increase, with a gross margin of 85%. Meanwhile, its user pool is expanding at a rapid speed. In 2021, its DAU user base reached 9,3 million, a 55.8% increase over the previous year.  Zhang Lu has incubated a social metaverse from the initial social networking platform and this Soul metaverse is taking shape as the prototype of future human society. She held the belief that more authentic social connections will be developed in the virtual social paradise and she is taking pragmatic measures to further improve this social metaverse.

Fret not because the vivo V5 has got your back. Meet the 64MP OIS Night Camera! V25 offers up to 8GB of additional RAM in times like this for noticeably smoother operations. You can also expand your storage space to 1TB and sit back to enjoy your favourite content wherever you are because it will all be stored in your phone. The crux here is: Take as many photos and HD videos as you like, and install as many apps as you need; this phone will give you the smoothest experience you could imagine. Fuel it up instantly with 44W Lightning FlashCharge! Constantly plugging your phone to refuel it is a redundant practice that only drains your battery quickly and impacts the overall performance of your phone over a longer period of time. The heat emissions as a result of the frequent charging is also not good for your ear health. vivo V5’s Super Charge Pump does a great job of reversing this experience for you. It converts energy at up to 97.5% efficiency, so your phone charges up in the blink of an eye without overheating. Not just this, the powerful 4500mAh battery juices up quick and lasts like a champ. Added to this, the Smart Charging Engine considers the battery status and user scenario—whether your screen is off or you’re using it while plugged in—to determine the optimal charging strategy. Result: Reduced battery deterioration and heat generated during charging, and battery lifespan extended by up to 25%! Could you have asked for anything more? Feel the lightness with a 2.5D Thin Body & a Flat Frame Another major annoyance in phones is the weight, which most users fail to incorporate in their purchase decision. A heavier phone is uncomfortable and can pain your wrists. Let’s face it we are almost carrying our phones in our hands or using them all the time! Hence a lighter phone has become the need of the hour since it is handier and easy to carry around. Here too, vivo V25, with a display with a 90Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ screen, a wide colour gamut and 1300 nits peak brightness, simply takes the cake. Its 2.5D thin and light body, with the most classic flat frame design, brings a super comfortable grip. Whether holding the screen vertically to play the phone or holding the screen horizontally to play games, it feels surprisingly smooth, almost paperweight, in your hands. Now, isn’t that an experience we all secretly desire? You can have it in just a few clicks at amazing offers. To buy this marvel of a phone at Rs 27,999, click here. There are cashback offers of Rs 2,500 if you use an ICICI or an SBI card. There is also a cashback offer eligible on the EMI of ICICI credit card full swipe, credit card and debit card EMIs, and SBI credit card EMI. Happy shopping this Diwali! Latest Crypto News: Most Salvadorans Consider Bitcoin’s Adoption As Currency A ‘Failure’ – Outlook India https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/latest-crypto-news-most-salvadorans-consider-bitcoins-adoption-as-currency-a-failure-outlook-india/ More than a year after Bitcoin was accepted as a legal tender in El Salvador, a new poll released on Tuesday revealed that most Salvadorans saw President Nayib Bukele’s controversial decision to adopt the cryptocurrency as a legal tender as a “failure,” AFP reported. The study conducted by the University of Central America (UCA) showed that 75.6 percent of the respondents said they would never use cryptocurrencies, and 77 percent said the president’s decision to adopt Bitcoin as the country’s currency alongside the US dollar 14 months ago “had failed.” Meanwhile, the crypto exchange WazirX has announced a gift card feature on its platform to enable registered users to gift cryptos this festive season. WazirX is launching two products: Shagun and Muhurat trading, targeting Diwali festivities. Users could win free WRX using the Gift Card feature and zero fees for trading cryptos on the platform. Besides the Crypto Gift Card feature, Shagun & Muhrat features (will) will be active from October 20 and 22, 2022, respectively, WazirX said in a press release. WazirX will offer WRX Shagun from October 20-26, 10 am-10 pm IST, to the first 10,000 unique users who send gifts via WazirX gift card. Shagun, which will be given via coupons, will be decided based on a lucky draw. “Additionally, with the distribution of Shagun this Diwali, on the WazirX P2P engine, the minimum purchase value will be reduced to 8 USDT (from the previous 14.5 USDT) for all users from 20th October 10 am to 26th October 10 pm IST,” the statement added. Rajagopal Menon, VP of Marketing, WazirX, says, “Bitcoin was modeled as digital gold, and all of us know how much Indians love gold. WazirX was founded to make crypto accessible to every Indian – we believe that the gift card feature will go a long way in converting no-coiners to proud crypto users. The Muhurat trading and WazirX Crypto Gift Cards will let users share the joy of owning Crypto with their loved ones.” In other news, TravelX, a marketplace for tokenized travel products, and Latin American cryptocurrency exchange Lemon have merged to enable Lemon users to purchase air tickets. In September, TravelX said that its tickets for budget Argentine airline Flybondi would be turned into non-fungible tokens or NFTickets after purchase. Each Lemon user can buy up to two tickets on TravelX with USDC from their Lemon wallet and receive 50 per cent cashback in Bitcoin starting in October, with a cap of 100 USDC per transaction.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic LONDON, Oct 19 (Reuters) – New steps from Group of Seven countries to cap Russian oil sales at an enforced low price will not be replicated against OPEC producers, whose plans to cut output have irked consumer countries, a United States Treasury official told Reuters. The United States has communicated to representatives of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to reassure them of those limits to its plans, the official added. The comments could help ease a spat between the United States and Saudi Arabia, the top oil exporter and de facto OPEC leader, over what Washington sees as collaboration with Russia to deprive markets of supply just as a global recession looms. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com OPEC+, which groups the producer bloc with allies like Russia, announced last week that it would cut production by 2 million barrels per day to balance markets and quell volatility. Saudi Arabia said the real reduction would likely be around 1 million barrels per day (bpd) as several OPEC members have struggled to meet their existing output targets. The United States last week said the cut would boost Russia’s revenue and suggested it had been engineered for political reasons by Saudi Arabia, which on Sunday denied it was supporting Moscow in its invasion of Ukraine. The price cap due for Dec. 5 was designed specifically to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and will not be carried over to other producers, the official added, as their moves to rein in output drive up prices. Nor do the new sanctions signal the beginning of a buyer’s cartel to counter the impact of OPEC policies on the oil market, the official, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the situation, said. The Paris-based International Energy Agency grouping of consumer countries, including the United States said last week that the OPEC+ cut has driven up prices and could push the global economy into recession. But the U.S. Treasury official saw the cut’s price impact as muted, saying it might take a $30-$40 price rise or an output cut 10 times the size of the actual cut to OPEC+ output of around 900,000 bpd to trigger a recession. The G7 is keen to deprive Moscow of wartime revenues but seeks to avoid a global supply shock, which could raise prices and hit their own citizens as global recession fears deepen. Agreed by G7 nations in September, the price cap plan faced clashing with much stricter European Union bans on Russian shipments ratified in June. The EU agreed to the cap this month but regulatory details have not been ironed out, increasing anxiety over the plan in the oil industry with six weeks to go. International Space Station To Resume Spacewalks, Six Months After Incident – The Indian Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/international-space-station-to-resume-spacewalks-six-months-after-incident-the-indian-express/ After a flight readiness review, NASA has greenlit spacewalks outside of the International Space Station. Spacewalks were suspended for nearly seven months since March 23 when a small amount of water was found in ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Matthias Maurer’s helmet. “Crew safety is the top priority of NASA and our international partners. I’m proud of the space station and ground teams’ work to keep our crew members safe, for taking the time necessary to close out the investigation, and for continually findings ways to mitigate risks in human spaceflight,” said Kathryn Lueders, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate, in a press statement. Spacesuit water issue After Maurer’s spacewalk months ago, the crew on the space station immediately removed his helmet and worked with NASA’s ground support team to gather data on the issue. The American space agency classified the event as a close call and declared a stop to all pending spacewalks. Samples of the water and some of the hardware in Maurer’s suit were sent back to Earth with the Russian Soyuz 65S and NASA’s SpaceX Crew-2 mission. The entire spacesuit was then returned with the SpaceX CRS-25 mission for detailed analysis. Investigation After completing a detailed test and teardown of the space suit, and evaluating the water samples and suit hardware to see what happened, NASA teams confirmed that there were no hardware failures with the suit. According to the space agency, it is likely that the excess water in the spacesuit was formed by condensation due to the integrated systems performing multiple settings for crew exertion and crew cooling at the same time. Along with updating operational procedures, space station teams have developed new mitigation hardware to reduce the likelihood of such condensation leading to water accumulation, while also absorbing any water if it appears. NASA’s management teams approved the return to normal operations after the new operational procedures and mitigation hardware was added.

From The Archives – Daily Journal Online https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/from-the-archives-daily-journal-online/ 1992 – 30 years ago Upwards of 40 Farmington business, civic, education and government leaders leaped from bed early Friday morning to plan their promotion of Proposition 217 — the 1/2 cent, one-year sales tax extension on the Nov. 3 ballot. Over sweet rolls and coffee at Plank Road Inn at 7 a.m., the cross-section of community leaders — from bank presidents to three former Chamber of Commerce presidents to a former mayor — agreed that a public education campaign should be launched. “What we need to do is promote the sales tax extension as the means of funding the purchase and erection of a building in the new industrial park,” said Stuart Landrum. The Ste. Genevieve Dragons lit up the Farmington scoreboard early and often Friday night to spoil the Knights’ homecoming 40-7. “They came out and physically, I mean physically, whipped us,” said Farmington coach Kyle Reid. “Basically, Farmington just kind of got snake-bit,” said Dragon coach Bob Stolzer, “made some turnovers, and we capitalized on them and had them down in a hurry.” In the summer of 1954, a young boy reached into a box and pulled out a football jersey. It was long-sleeved and made of wool and wasn’t very comfortable. But as years added on and the freshman inside the jersey grew into a man, the legend of No. 11 swelled to immense proportions. Friday night, with a packed crowd on hand, Farmington High School retired the jersey. The jersey of Ed Blaine. “I’ve thought to myself, ‘You mean forever more, nobody’s going to wear No. 11,” pondered Blaine. “Farmington High School will be here 200 years from now, and they’ll be playing without No. 11? That’s an interesting thought.” Both sides of the city consolidation issue are gearing up for the stretch run. The six-city consolidation issue will be on the Nov. 3 general election ballot for citizens of Flat River, Desloge, Ribermines, Elvins, Esther, and Leadington. Wednesday, the Desloge Citizens Opposed to Consolidation Committee released a fact sheet expressing concerns about the proposed move. Monday, meanwhile, the Mineral Area Consolidation Committee responded with a long press release of its own, including comments from Gary Markenson, executive director of the Missouri Municipal League. Markenson strongly backs the consolidation plan. 1972 – 50 years ago Herbert Boxdorfer, prominent businessman and long-time resident of Farmington, passed away at his home shortly before midnight Monday, October 16, 1972, following a heart attack. Mr. Boxdorfer was born in Perry County, Missouri, August 28, 1906, a son of the late Adolph Boxdorfer and Pauline Hoehn Boxdorfer. He had been under a doctor’s care for the past year. Mr. Boxdorfer was president of the Rozier Store Company, having been associated with that firm for more than 25 years. He was a charter member of the Farmington Kiwanis Club, having a 24-year perfect attendance record and having served as Kiwanis president in 1957. Mr. Boxdorfer was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and its treasurer for approximately 25 years, He had served in various capacities as a member of the Farmington Chamber of Commerce, and he was one of the original organizers of the Farmington Expansion Corporation. A broken front door lock at Rozier’s Store in Farmington was the first indication of the burglary which occurred last weekend. The entire stock of suits and almost all of the sportcoats were stolen. Sheriff Ken Buckley, FBI agents and the Farmington Police were at Rozier’s shortly after the break-in was discovered. The burglars had entered the front door, arranged clothing racks across the aisles so that their activities could not readily be seen and then transported their stolen goods out the rear door. A similar robbery had taken place in December of 1970. Business Women’s Week was celebrated by the local club, Monday, October 16, when forty members and four guests met at the Presbyterian Homelife at 6:30 p.m. for a dinner meeting. Beverly Hovis, president, welcomed the guests who were Edith (Welker) Long, a charter member, Sister Rae Ann, Ruth Denton, and Karin Ellis. Anita Patt reported that the club had been invited to a dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club, Wednesday, October 18, by the B.P.W. Club of St. Louis, who was honoring Irene M. Peterson as Woman of the Year. The Farmington B.P.W. was also invited to take part in a Missouri Commission of the Status of Women to be held at the Ramada Inn at Jefferson City on November 11 for an Equal Rights Amendment Ratification Rally. The Farmington Board of Education on Tuesday evening formally heard requests by a small number of interested parents and others that transportation be provided for pupils residing less than one mile from the attendance center to which they are assigned. The Board expressed their concern for the safety and welfare of all pupils residing in the district but pointed out some of the complications involved in granting such a request without a thorough study of all of the implications and feasibility of such action. The Board informed the group that certain actions on the study are already in progress and that further such action will be continued as rapidly as possible until sufficient information is available upon which to base a reasonable and proper decision as it affects the educational program of the entire school population. 1962 – 60 years ago The Eleventh Annual Meeting of the M.F.A. Exchange of Farmington was held at the Franklin School Cafeteria in Farmington on Tuesday evening, October 16. Approximately 175 members and guests were in attendance. A program of Dixieland music was presented to the group by the Farmington High School Dixieland Band under the direction of Conductor Don McClard. Members of the band were Clarence Benton Jr., Douglas Lenz, Bill Bohs, David Ogle, Mike Reynierse, Don Mason, John Crouch, and Dean Groseclose. The annual Rotary Auction held at Washington and Harrison streets in Farmington last Saturday, October 13, was very successful, and bidding was spirited on the items offered for sale, according to the report of the Auction Committee of the club. The report was made at the regular Tuesday evening dinner meeting of the Farmington Rotary Club at the Presbyterian Home dining hall this week. The report was a brief summary, and a full report will be made to the club as soon as all figures on the auction are completed. One guest was present at this week’s club meeting — Dr. Dorolina of the Philippine Islands — who is presently serving on the staff at State Hospital No. 4 at Farmington. Dr. Dorolina came as the guest of Dr. Robert Mothershead. The Farmington Kiwanis Club met for the regular Wednesday noon luncheon yesterday at the Presbyterian Home dining hall with 34 present. Jack Slusher attended as the guest of Bill Martin, and Bob Overton was the guest of Tom Fitz. It was announced that a joint meeting will be held on November 13 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Farmington. Election of officers was held, and officers elected to serve during the coming year are Floyd Becker, president; Floyd Hager, first vice president; P. J. Newell, second vice president; and Joe Grandhomme, treasurer. Directors elected are Milton Simms, Harry Sailor, Albert Karsch, Walter Simpson, Willard Rurnburg, Claude Cain, Francis Stoll, Glen Sago, and Nat C. Watkins Jr. The Farmington High School Knights will make a home stand against the Crystal City football delegation tomorrow night at Wilson-Rozier Park in Farmington. Coach Bud Mercier’s Knights will be trying to regain ground they lost last Friday when they met their first defeat of the season on the Fredericktown field. Before letting the Fredericktown Black Cats claw them, the Knights had a record of four consecutive victories for the season. The Crystal City team promises stiff competition, and it is expected that a good crowd of Farmington rooters will be on hand to cheer the Knights to a hoped-for victory tomorrow night. October 15th, the Farmington Business and Professional Women’s Club met for their monthly dinner meeting at Ozark Village Cafe with Lodean Dugal, president, presiding. The program for the evening was entitled Communism—Undo It Yourself. Participants in the discussion were Helen Meyer, Lodean Dugal, Isabelle Dixon, Ruby Beard and Ruth Garner. Points discussed included the definition of communism, the aims and purposes of the communist party, what we can do as parents and citizens to fortify our children’s minds against a false philosophy, and the basic differences between the U.S.A. and the U.S. S. R. 1952 – 70 years ago An increasing number of “quickie” marriages in Arkansas are ending in Missouri divorce courts, according to a survey made recently by Circuit Judge J.O. Swink of Farmington. Speaking from his two years experience as a jurist in the 27th Judicial Circuit, Judge Swink observed that more and more Missouri couples are going to Arkansas to avoid the three-day wait for blood tests as provided for in the new Missouri law. Judge Swink relates that in the largest of his five counties — St. Francois — more than half of the divorce cases are outgrowths of hasty marriages performed in Arkansas. His contention is that there would be fewer divorces if couples didn’t run off to Arkansas to get married. The general solicitation of the residents of Farmington in the one-day dawn-to-dusk Boy Scout funds drive will “kick-off” on Saturday, October 25, with a breakfast at 7:00 A.M. for the campaign workers at Memorial Methodist Church, Community Chairman J. Richard Roberts announced yesterday. Rev. R. Ray Stone, pastor of the Baptist Church, will be the principal speaker at the breakfast, and the Rev. Elbert Cole, pastor of Memorial Methodist Church, will give the invocation, according to D.C. Coley, who is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Joe Hubbard, prominent far...

Is Inflation Affecting Travel Points And Miles? – The Associated Press – En Español https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/is-inflation-affecting-travel-points-and-miles-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ After years of unusually low prices on airfare and vacation rentals during the pandemic, travel prices have taken off in 2022. And while travel price inflation has cooled with slowing demand and falling fuel prices this fall, it continues to affect travelers’ plans and budgets. So with travel prices still well above their pre-pandemic levels, what does that mean for travelers’ hotel points and airline miles? Rewards programs regularly increase award prices , which are the number of points or miles needed to book a hotel night or flight. That practice devalues these currencies over time and renders customers’ collection of points and miles less useful. Yet, interestingly, the opposite effect seems to be happening this year. REWARDS ARE WORTH MORE THIS YEAR NerdWallet refreshed its annual analysis of points and miles programs and found something unexpected in a sea of bad inflation news: Many rewards programs’ points have become more valuable this year compared with the previous year. American Airlines’ miles increased in value, from 1.2 cents per mile in 2021 to 1.5 cents in 2022. United Airlines’ miles jumped from 1 cent per mile to 1.2 cents per mile. In fact, almost every domestic airline’s miles either increased in value or stayed the same, year over year. This bucks the conventional wisdom among points and miles enthusiasts, who expect to see those values drop over time. “Miles and points aren’t really a hedge against inflation, as the various programs and loyalty currencies are always devaluing based on business and economic trends,” said Tiffany Funk by email. Funk co-founded Point.me, a service that helps customers redeem their travel rewards. “But points can be a buffer against inflationary pressures in the short term.” Put simply: Cash prices went way up this year and award prices (e.g., the number of miles needed to book a flight) also went up, but not as much. Airfares were 33% higher in September 2022 than that month in the year prior, according to the September Consumer Price Index report. Meanwhile, airline miles are valued only 8.7% higher on average than last year, according to the analysis from NerdWallet. If cash prices tumble again, this effect of boosted points and miles values could get erased. But as long as prices remain high, travelers can nab outsized value from their points and miles — assuming they use them for high-value redemptions. STATIC VS. DYNAMIC AWARD PRICES In the old days of frequent flyer programs, a route would cost a given number of miles, regardless of the cash price. So a flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco would always cost, say, 5,000 miles. Yet the industry has trended away from the award chart approach toward dynamic award prices, which fluctuate to match the cash price. These programs generally offer less value when cash prices are high. “The best redemptions when cash prices are high will be through programs that don’t tie their currency to the dollar,” Funk said. Travelers should target programs like Hyatt, Wyndham or Alaska Airlines that still use an award chart to determine the cost of using points and miles. Conversely, Funk cited Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways as examples of programs that tie their rewards point values closely to the cash price of the flight. “Instead, a program where the award prices are either determined in advance (with published charts) or are flexible/dynamic based on circumstances (load factors, revenue data, etc.) will be better bets,” she said. Hyatt, for example, still maintains an award chart and saw its points increase in value from 1.9 cents to 2.8 cents from 2021 to 2022, according to the NerdWallet analysis. Marriott Bonvoy, which eliminated its award chart earlier this year, remained steady at 0.7 cent per point. AWARD SPACE MIGHT BE HARDER TO FIND Airlines continue to struggle with staffing difficulties and canceled flights, despite continued high demand. This means that planes are full, and that seats booked with miles are harder to come by. “Historically, we’ve advised that extra award space often opens up a week or so prior to departure,” Funk said. “But right now, we’re seeing seats held until two to three hours prior to departure.” Hotel rates, buoyed by strong demand and staffing shortages, have also put pressure on award redemptions. Most hotel programs use dynamic award prices that keep pace with cash prices, so finding bargain rates will remain a challenge. In other words, hotel points and airline miles might be more valuable, relatively, but they could be harder to use. So, travelers should stay flexible when making plans. _____________________________ This article was provided to The Associated Press by the personal finance website NerdWallet. Airline data was broken down into three categories: bookings 15 days out, 180 days out and travel during the winter holiday season. Hotel data was broken down into two categories: bookings 15 days out and four months out. Hotel data also included hotels bucketed into three quality tiers of high, medium and low. %

Inflation Rises To 10.1% As Economy Reels From Mini-Budget Chaos – Sky News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/inflation-rises-to-10-1-as-economy-reels-from-mini-budget-chaos-sky-news/ The rate of inflation rose to 10.1% in September, according to official figures, as the economy reels from the effects of rising prices and the fallout from the mini-budget. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the consumer prices index (CPI) measure rose from an annual rate of 9.9% in August to match the recent 40-year high seen in July. The report showed the largest upwards contribution came from food costs, while fuel provided the greatest downside pressure. Mortgage rates still rising despite mini-budget U-turns – cost of living latest It said the pace of food price rises was at its highest since April 1980 – running at an annual rate of 14.5% – with bread and cereals, meat products, milk, cheese and eggs leading the increases, the ONS reported. It is mostly a result of the effects caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the Western sanctions imposed in response, that have seen energy and other commodity costs surge and be passed on down the supply chain to shoppers. Households and businesses are also facing greater uncertainty ahead after the mini-budget tax and spending giveaway of 23 September was largely overturned following a violent rejection by financial markets. There are now just 12 days left for new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to find ways to gain economic confidence – and a plug for Britain’s funding gap – before the 31 October “medium-term fiscal plan” and analysis of the situation from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR). Benefits and pensions implications The lack of clarity on the government’s spending plans has left millions of pensioners and benefit claimants in limbo. That is because September’s inflation figure has implications for how their payments are uprated. If the government decides to raise benefits by inflation, the hike will come into effect from next April. September’s figure is also used for reviewing the triple-lock pension commitment. The poorest and pensioners in jeopardy Paul Kelso Business correspondent @pkelso September’s inflation figure confirms what consumers already knew and the chancellor feared. Consumer Price Inflation increased to 10.1% last month, matching July’s 40-year-high and largely reflecting rising food prices, driven significantly by the squeeze on staple commodities and energy triggered by the war in Ukraine. That impacts every household in the country. Millions who have been finding economies for months to offset the demand of energy bills will have no corners left to cut as inflationary pressures are passed on by retailers, chiefly supermarkets. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that food costs have risen faster than at any point in the last 42 years, rising 14.6% year-on-year in large part because of pressure on cereal supplies. Semi-skimmed milk has gone up in price 40% in the last year, reflecting the feed costs for dairy herds, while pasta has gone up by a third. The inflation they’re driving matters to Jeremy Hunt because it further complicates the choice he faces over how generously to fund welfare increases. Read full analysis here The triple-lock means pensions will rise by either average earnings, CPI inflation based on September’s rate, or 2.5% – whichever is highest. With average earnings most recently hitting 5.4%, the triple lock should ensure pensions rising by the inflation rate in April next year. Downing Street had indicated that ministers could ditch their commitment to the triple lock as Mr Hunt finds ways to claw back funds. However, under-fire PM Liz Truss used Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons to declare that would not be the case. She told MPs that they remained “completely committed” to the triple lock. The Financial Times reported on Wednesday morning that the Chancellor could make a move on bank profits, in addition to potentially taking a greater share of energy company earnings, to help balance the books. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 1:26 Truss sorry for budget chaos Household finances are widely facing greater uncertainty after Mr Hunt confirmed the universal energy price guarantee, capping wholesale costs, would end in April and likely become more targeted in the months beyond. It threatens to add to inflation next spring, should the majority of bill-payers have to stump up for energy costs in line with energy price cap predictions of around £4,000 annually. The chancellor said in reaction to the inflation data: “I understand that families across the country are struggling with rising prices and higher energy bills. “This government will prioritise help for the most vulnerable while delivering wider economic stability and driving long-term growth that will help everyone. “We have acted decisively to protect households and businesses from significant rises in their energy bills this winter, with the government’s energy price guarantee holding down peak inflation.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 2:17 Benefits: Families falling into crisis Commenting on the current price picture, ONS director of economic statistics, Darren Morgan, said: “The rise was driven by further increases across food, which saw its largest annual rise in over 40 years, while hotel prices also increased after falling this time last year. “These rises were partially offset by continuing falls in the costs of petrol, with airline prices falling by more than usual for this time of year, and second-hand car prices also rising less steeply than the large increases seen last year. “While still at a historically high rate, the costs facing businesses are beginning to rise more slowly, with crude oil prices actually falling in September.”

Yankees Vs. Guardians Final Score, Results: Yankees Advance To ALCS Behind Early Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge Power Surge – Sporting News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/yankees-vs-guardians-final-score-results-yankees-advance-to-alcs-behind-early-giancarlo-stanton-aaron-judge-power-surge-sporting-news/ After Game 5 of the ALDS was moved from Monday to Tuesday because of rain, the New York Yankees jumped all over the Guardians and never looked back. With Nestor Cortes getting the start on three days rest, Cleveland decided to stay with its original starter in Aaron Civale. The Yankees, however, weren’t going to let him hang around. Civale was chased after recording just one out, as a three-run home run from Giancarlo Stanton gave the Yankees an early lead. In the second, Aaron Judge continued the show by hitting a solo shot to right center field. That was all Cortes and the Yankees bullpen would need. New York got five innings of one-run pitching out of Cortes, then two out of Joey Loaisiga. Clay Holmes pitched the eighth and Wandy Peralta shut things down in the ninth. It was a strong team effort from the Yankees, with the only real threat from the Guardians coming in the third when they loaded the bases up with one out. Jose Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly, which didn’t make enough of a dent in the lead to inspire much hope. MORE: Why Yankees fans trolled Josh Naylor with ‘who’s your daddy’ As for the Yankee faithful, they were as raucous as one could expect. Josh Naylor was booed and Yankee fans rocked the baby every time he went back to the dugout, Myles Straw got boos after his tiff with the Bleacher Creatures earlier this year, and they were generally loud between pitches. Though things died down after the initial power surge between Stanton and Judge, no one was disengaged, particularly given the crowd was the same one that sat through a lengthy delay only to be sent home Monday night. Now, the Yankees will turn right around and travel to Houston to play the Astros on Wednesday. The roster is bruised up a bit, with Aaron Hicks leaving this game early after colliding with Oswaldo Cabrera and the bullpen seeing significant use over the past five games. Game 1 will be Jameson Taillon vs. Justin Verlander, so the Yankees bullpen will get more run early in the ALCS. That series looms particularly large for New York, as the Yankees have lost their last two ALCS appearances, both to the Astros. They enter this series with an uphill battle, but maybe they can channel some of the energy the Guardians channeled against them and make things competitive early. Yankees vs. Guardians score   1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 F Guardians 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 Yankees 3 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 — 1 Yankees vs. Guardians live updates, highlights from ALDS Game 5 (All times Eastern) 7:20 p.m. — Straw came up first-pitch swinging, and he grounds out to Kiner-Falefa at short. Torres catches it and rocks the baby, and the Yankees are heading to the ALCS. Yankees 5, Guardians 1 7:19 p.m. — Maile keeps the Guardians alive, and it’s Myles Straw up next with runners on first and second. The potential tying run is in the on-deck circle in Steven Kwan. 7:17 p.m. — Peralta gets Gimenez swinging with a nasty sinker, and the Guardians are down to their last out in the form of Luke Maile. 7:15 p.m. — There simply hasn’t been much solid contact from the Guardians today, as Arias gets another infield hit for Cleveland. Gimenez steps up with a runner on, but there’s a lot of work still to do. 7:13 p.m. — Peralta gets Naylor to ground out to Rizzo at first, who has had a busy day for New York. One down, Arias up. 7:12 p.m. — If that goes sideways, Gerrit Cole is warming up in the pen for New York. 7:11 p.m. — Wandy Peralta up to close it out for the Yankees. 7:08 p.m. — Clase gets Torres to ground out into a force, and it’s going to be Naylor-Arias-Gimenez for the Guardians in their last chance in the ninth. 7:06 p.m. — Clase hit Kiner-Falefa in the small of his back in Kiner-Falefa’s first at-bat, and Yankee fans are restless. The order now turns over to Torres. 7:05 p.m. — Bader once again goes on the first pitch of an AB, and Trevino grounds out to second for the second out as there’s no play at second. 7:04 p.m. — Bader is on base again with yet another walk, as Clase puts him on with one out. The Yankees are looking for some insurance from Trevino. 7:01 p.m. — Clase is back in for the Guardians for the eighth. He’ll face Cabrera to start the inning. 6:56 p.m. — After going down 3-0 to Gonzalez, Holmes comes all the way back to get him swinging and get out of the inning clean. Josh Naylor will lead off in the ninth for the Guardians. 6:54 p.m. — The Yankees are now four outs away, as Ramirez grounds out to Rizzo who pitches it to Holmes covering. Oscar Gonzalez is now up, and it’s dire for Cleveland. 6:52 p.m. — Holmes gets Rosario looking on a wicked slider that buckles his knees. Ramirez up next for Cleveland. 6:51 p.m. — Clay Holmes is throwing for the Yankees now against Amed Rosario. 6:48 p.m. — Clase gets Donaldson with relative ease, and the Guardians have six outs to make up four runs. 6:43 p.m. — Stanton scorches another one straight to Kwan in left, and Emmanuel Clase will come out of the bullpen with two outs and a runner on first. Guardians trying to prevent any more damage with Donaldson up next. 6:41 p.m. — Interesting play there by Gimenez, as he lets a high pop up drop to exchange Judge for Rizzo on first base. It’s a significant speed difference there, but just one out. 6:39 p.m. — Coming out of the seventh inning stretch, Karinchak is, in fact, still in and Judge laces one up the middle for a hit. Rizzo steps up with one on. 6:34 p.m. — Kwan grounds out to Rizzo who flips it to Loaisiga for the 3-1 out. Guardians now have six outs left as Loaisiga caps off two scoreless innings for the Yankees. 6:33 p.m. — On a high chopper to third, Donaldson guns down Straw and the order turns over to Kwan, who is 2 for 3 on the day. He comes up with a runner in scoring position and two outs now. 6:31 p.m. — After Gimenez goes down, Miller rolls one down the third-base line and legs it out for an infield single. Straw is now up for the Guardians. 6:25 p.m. — Loaisiga stays on as the Yankees do some juggling after Carpenter’s at-bat, with Cabrera moving to left and Isiah Kiner-Falefa coming in at short. Andres Gimenez leads off for the Guardians, with Owen Miller about to step up for Austin Hedges. 6:22 p.m. — Karinchak gets Torres swinging to get out of what will likely be his last inning. Next Guardians pitcher will get a clean slate, and the Yankees cloud the sky but lightning doesn’t strike. 6:20 p.m. — Karinchak is unimpressed. After missing high, he comes back a fastball and a pair of curveballs to strike him out in four pitches. Big batter there for him, and there are two down. 6:18 p.m. — Yankee fans are HYPED for Carpenter, as Boone clearly is trying to hammer the coffin shut. 6:16 p.m. — Guardians catch a minor break there, as Bader gets held up at second on a steal as Trevino slaps one into right. It’ll be runners on first and second with one out, and Matt Carpenter steps up for Marwin Gonzalez. 6:15 p.m. — Bader gets plunked on the elbow by Karinchak, and Trevino is up next with a runner on first. 6:14 p.m. — Karinchak gets Cabrera to pop out to short, and Shane Bieber was seen loosening up a bit in the pen for Cleveland (to be clear, he is not throwing, just stretching). Bader is up. 6:08 p.m. — Loaisiga goes up 1-2 against Arias before getting him with a 100 mph fastball. He reared back for a bit extra on that one, and he gets out of the inning without damage after a questionable start. 6:05 p.m. — Oscar Gonzalez grounds out to third and the only play was at first. Josh Naylor then lines one up the middle but Cabrera was positioned by second to make the catch. In a traditional alignment, that would score two. Arias is now up in a potentially huge at bat. 6:03 p.m. — Cortes comes out of the game and Jonathan Loaisiga quickly gives up a pair of hits to Rosario and Ramirez. 6 p.m. — Donaldson flies out to end the inning, but not before a run comes in. Guardians have 12 outs left. 5:58 p.m. — Karinchak now gets Stanton with a nice curveball out over the plate. 5:57 p.m. — After spending a lot of time with Torres at second, Karinchak gives up a hit to Rizzo in right-center field and drives the run in. Stanton comes up with one still out. Yankees 5, Guardians 1. 5:52 p.m. — Judge strikes out, and he swung and missed on two sliders in that AB. Good work by Stephan, and Francona will go to the pen again with James Karinchak. 5:51 p.m. — Torres swipes second as the count goes to 2-1 on Judge. He made that look very easy against a solid defensive catcher in Hedges, as Stephan misses inside again to go to 3-1 on Judge. 5:50 p.m. — Stephan walks Torres after the count goes full, and Judge will come up with Gleyber on first. Pivotal moment in this game. 5:47 p.m. — Stephan is out for his third inning for Cleveland, and goes to 2-2 against Torres. He fights off a fastball inside and they’ll do it again. 5:42 p.m. — Cortes does his goofiest hitch in a 1-2 count and misses high before missing again to fill up the count. Yankees fans loved it and got louder the longer he held onto the ball. Kwan ends the AB flying out to right field, and it’s a 1-2-3 inning for Cortes, who doesn’t want to hear anything about a bullpen game. 5:41 p.m. — Straw pops out to first in his AB, and the order again turns over for Steven Kwan. 5:39 p.m. — The count fills up with Hedges, who ends up flying out to left center. Straw is up to his customary chorus of boos from Yankee Stadium. 5:37 p.m. — Cortes is back having thrown just 46 pitches through four innings. He’ll go up against Hedges. 5:34 p.m. — Gonzalez strikes out in short order and the Yankees are done in the bottom of the fourth. Quick ...

JPMorgan Adds Crypto Policy Head After Dimon ‘Ponzi Scheme’ Quip – Bloomberg Law https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/jpmorgan-adds-crypto-policy-head-after-dimon-ponzi-scheme-quip-bloomberg-law/ JPMorgan Chase & Co. has hired a new head of digital assets regulatory policy, less than a month after CEO Jamie Dimon told lawmakers that cryptocurrencies are “decentralized Ponzi schemes.” Aaron Iovine joined the company this week as executive director for digital assets regulatory policy, a newly created role, a JPMorgan spokeswoman confirmed. He was previously head of policy and regulatory for cryptocurrency lender Celsius Network Ltd., whose bankruptcy filing has roiled the digital asset market. JPMorgan is looking to build out its policy ranks in the evolving digital asset space amid increased regulatory scrutiny and a downturn in cryptocurrency values. Iovine didn’t respond to a comment request. Dimon and other JPMorgan executives have been vocal critics of digital assets. Dimon’s “Ponzi schemes” comment came Sept. 21 in congressional testimony, during which he called himself a “major skeptic on crypto tokens.” Takis Georgakopoulos, global head of payments at JPMorgan, told Bloomberg Television last month that he sees “very little” demand for cryptocurrencies as a payment tool. JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon testifies at Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing on Sept. 22, 2022. Photo: Al Drago/Bloomberg In addition to hiring Iovine, JPMorgan this month posted an opening for a digital assets counsel position with its corporate and investment bank in New York. Stacey Friedman, who has been JPMorgan’s general counsel since 2015, didn’t respond to a request for comment about the New York-based financial services giant’s interest in lawyers familiar with distributed ledger technologies. Iovine will work with JPMorgan’s regulatory affairs group, which a year ago welcomed aboard former Davis Polk & Wardwell senior associate Sharon Yang as a managing director and global head of regulatory affairs. Yang previously served as a deputy assistant secretary for international financial markets at the Treasury Department. Celsius hired Iovine earlier this year from Cross River Bank, a digital asset-friendly regional lender. The company recently brought on Benjamin Melnicki from Robinhood Markets Inc. to be its head of cryptocurrency compliance and regulatory. Iovine, who like Melnicki is also an attorney, spent nearly three years at Cross River, where he led policy and regulatory affairs. Cross River hired Iovine in 2019 after he spent nearly a year as a senior regulatory analyst at the law firm White & Case. During the first quarter of this year, Iovine was part of a Cross River team that lobbied Congress on “general issues focused on financial services, fintech partnerships, and the Paycheck Protection Program,” according to a public filing. Iovine departed Fort Lee, N.J.-based Cross River in February to join Celsius, according to his LinkedIn profile. An online bio touts Iovine’s expertise “exploring the future of financial services while working at the intersection of law, policy, and regulation.” He left Celsius in September, two months after the cryptocurrency rewards-earning and lending platform filed for bankruptcy in New York. The Chapter 11 case has already generated large legal bills for Kirkland & Ellis—court filings show the latter has received at least $3.5 million in retainer payments—and other firms. It has also sparked fraud accusations against London-based Celsius by a former company employee, who the debtor has accused of deception. A bankruptcy docket for the Celsius case shows that Iovine’s name appears on a list of thousands of unsecured creditors with claims against the company. Among them are Ron Deutsch, a former counsel at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison hired last year by Celsius to be its general counsel and head of mergers and acquisitions.
