Texas A&M needs big plays
Will Anderson Jr. rocked Haynes King on second-and-10, and that was the third time on the drive that Alabama’s front seven impacted the play. It’s clear that the Aggies are going to have a hard time controlling the line of scrimmage, which means they’re going to have to break off some explosive plays to have a chance. That hasn’t happened much this year though.

Jalen Milroe gets the start and the drive stalls
It was indeed Milroe who took the first snap in play of Bryce Young, and it didn’t go according to plan. Jahmyr Gibbs had a 25-yard scamper, but Milroe missed Cameron Latu on third-and-16 and the Crimson Tide were forced to punt. The passing game isn’t necessarily Milroe’s strength, but it’s hard to expect much when he gets behind the sticks.

Prediction time
I’ll take No. 1 Alabama to win this game over Texas A&M 42-7. I don’t think the Aggies will be able to move the ball at all, and Alabama will run, run and run some more. That’ll drain the clock and put this one to rest relatively early.

Well, maybe Bryce Young was a decoy
Young was announced as Alabama’s starting quarterback inside the stadium. However, it appears that he might not be taking the first snap of the game.

Bryce Young announced as the starting QB
The 2021 Heisman Trophy winner sprained his shoulder in the second quarter of last week’s win over Arkansas, and was relieved by dual-threat signal-caller Jalen Milroe. Young’s status has been in doubt all week, and it appears — for now anyway — that he will start for the Crimson Tide.

Metaverse Tokens That Could Do 10x Before The Year Ends Decentraland Enjin Coin And MetaCryp | Bitcoinist
Metaverse Tokens That Could Do 10x Before The Year Ends – Decentraland, Enjin Coin, And MetaCryp | – Bitcoinist https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/metaverse-tokens-that-could-do-10x-before-the-year-ends-decentraland-enjin-coin-and-metacryp-bitcoinist/
Blockchain, cryptocurrencies, the Metaverse, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are paving the way for new ways to escape the rat race and enter a safe, drama-free environment. Now that we have this cutting-edge technology, we can all step out of the cold and into the sunshine, explore a fantastical world, communicate with people across the globe, and even play games.
Through the Metaverse, one can create a unique environment, complete with all the bells and whistles, meet new people, and have fun playing games without ever having to leave the house.
We have compiled a list of the top gaming tokens available for purchase in this post so that you can experience the boundless realm of the Metaverse – The Sandbox (SAND), Enjin Coin (ENJ), and new crypto MetaCryp (MTCR).
Explore the Metaverse with The Sandbox (SAND)
Regarding online gaming, The Sandbox (SAND) is a blockchain-based utopia. The land is a digital property that can be created, bought, and sold by anybody with access to the network. The project combines a programmable environment with non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are becoming increasingly popular in the gaming industry, to give players a richer, more interactive gaming experience.
The Sandbox takes on two major problems in the gaming industry: locked funds and a lack of transparency. Several routes exist in the Sandbox for players to withdraw their funds and use them in other games or the real world. In the Sandbox, users can use a basic Ethereum blockchain explorer to confirm any item’s authenticity, history, and capabilities.
Players can generate passive money by collecting land access fees from other players. As players acquire more land or improve their existing holdings, so do their rewards.
Have Fun with Enjin Coin (ENJ)
Enjin Coin (ENJ) is a digital asset used to back the value of blockchain assets developed on the Enjin online gaming creation platform. This digital asset is built on the ERC-20 standard.
This open-source platform was designed specifically for online gamers and the gaming community. It enables virtual ownership of items and trading between players and community members, all of which are made possible through smart wallets.
While ENJ was first developed on the Ethereum blockchain, the company has just finished a funding round that raised over $19 million and will use that money to create a blockchain for NFTs based on Polkadot.
The DeFi world has a new GameFi Token – MetaCryp (MTCR)
Through their new Network, MetaCryp (MTCR) is providing people from all over the world with an environment that seems like a home away from home. The MetaCryp Network is the very first GameFi space in the world. It is a community-focused ecosystem that provides its users with a location that feels just like home, where they may indulge in intense fun and let their wildest imaginations run free.
MetaCryp is developing a new space to advance the direction DeFi and the metaverse are headed. This new space is built on the Binance Smart Chain. They are concentrating on developing products compatible with one another in high-end gaming systems, DeFi, and NFT software programs. The objective of the MetaCryp Network is to achieve a position of prominence among those capable of producing a secure and entertaining environment for all its users. These users will be able to take advantage of modernized tools in blockchain technology, the Metaverse, Play2Earn gaming, advanced DeFi platforms, socializing, and all things related to the metaverse in terms of gaming, events, and collectibles.
In addition, playing games on the ‘Play-to-Earn Ecosystem’ allows users to earn $MTCR tokens without leaving the comfort of their homes. It ensures they will have the opportunity to earn money using the $MTCR token, in-game assets, or NFTs.
There are 500,000,000 MTCR tokens available in circulation. On your first purchase, you can receive a 32% incentive. You will also receive a 10% discount when purchasing MTCR tokens with Ethereum and 8% and 13% discounts when purchasing with BTC and BNB, respectively.

Big Eyes LooksRare And Bat Smart Crypto Investment Beyond The Crypto Winter NewsBTC
Big Eyes, LooksRare, And Bat – Smart Crypto Investment Beyond The Crypto Winter – NewsBTC https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/big-eyes-looksrare-and-bat-smart-crypto-investment-beyond-the-crypto-winter-newsbtc/
Big Eyes (BIG), LooksRare (LOOKS), and Basic Attention Token (BAT) are crypto assets with distinct utilities and features. However, they share similarities based on their prospect of having a great after-winter run, per analysis.
LooksRare (LOOKS) and Basic Attention Token (BAT) have had to endure the bear market effect, suffering great price decline, while Big Eyes (BIG) is a new cryptocurrency at presale. Experts believe Big Eyes (BIG) has a higher probability of a great run than the other two. We look into them below.
That NFT – LooksRare (LOOKS)
LooksRare will hope to leverage the increasing growth and acceptance of NFTs to continue its impressive market run, which has suffered some setbacks due to the bear market effect. The Ethereum-based NFTs and digital collectibles marketplace is one of the leading blockchain platforms that makes it seamless to trade non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with crypto assets while offering rewards.
According to the website, collectors and traders have earned about $1.3+ billion in rewards from trading web3 NFTs on LooksRare. The platform also has other passive income earning opportunities. One of which is staking your LooksRare token, LOOKS. This helps you get a daily share of the trading fees in wrapped ETH (WETH) and gives you additional LOOKS tokens.
LOOKS is a low-priced crypto asset and one of the most under-watched assets on the coin market. No one saw it coming when it peaked at $7.07 in January of this year. However, it has declined and hit an all-time low in June. LOOKS has been trying to rally back to an above $1, but the crypto effect has been strong.
Analysts believe the bull market could see it boom, and its low price could be a great entry point in the long run.
Adverts Suited To You ONLY – Basic Attention Token (BAT)
Basic Attention Token (BAT) is an innovative crypto asset developed to help advisers, content creators, and users benefit from digital advertising. The blockchain-based project aims to improve the efficiency, fairness, and security of advertisement, leveraging Blockchain technology and a special web browser called Brave.
The BAT token is the native currency on the Brave platform that advertisers leverage to pay for ads, and users earn them as a reward when they consume these ads. The project ensures consumers are only exposed to ads of their interests and provides consumer data privacy. This ensures that ads are effective and consumers are protected while earning.
It’s an innovative crypto project billed to change the face of digital advertising by ensuring every stakeholder remains satisfied. BAT peaked at $1.92 market price in the previous bull run. However, it’s currently valued below $0.5 in the present market.
The crypto asset still has huge potential of crossing the $1 mark in the coming months due to its unique utility. It’s one of the crypto assets to watch out for beyond the crypto winter.
Meme Coins Just Hit An “Adorability” All Time High – Big Eyes Coin (BIG)
The Big Eyes (BIG) cryptocurrency is one of the new crypto projects that will change the meme sector. It is billed to help users enjoy DeFi and NFTs benefits and ensure users find these crypto sectors highly beneficial. Big Eyes (BIG) will feature a community-focused blockchain ecosystem where users can access various resources and growth opportunities.
Big Eyes token (BIG) will power the ecosystem. It will function as transaction fees on the Big Eyes Swap and will be used to purchase NFTs, which are billed to rise in value as time goes on. The NFTs will allow users access to some of the opportunities Big Eyes offers, making the ecosystem beneficial.
The meme coin is enjoying an excellent presale, with $3+ million raised in a few weeks. It’s selling out faster and remains one of the best purchase options for a presale token. It’s set for s great after-winter run per experts’ predictions, and now could be the best time to join the presale.
Use code BIGOCT22 for a 5% bonus when buying coins.

Two Areas Where The U.S. And China Can Still Work Together Forbes
Two Areas Where The U.S. And China Can Still Work Together – Forbes https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/two-areas-where-the-u-s-and-china-can-still-work-together-forbes/
Dr. Selwyn Vickers
U.S.-China relations are at their worst in decades, experts routinely declare. A long list of disagreements includes Taiwan, Russia and the semiconductor trade. Is there still any hope for collaboration between the two powerful countries?
A forum organized by the Asia Society’s new Center for China Analysis on “China’s Future: What It Means for Asia and the World” in New York on Monday highlighted at least two areas that are still of promise: the fight against cancer and the push to a carbon neutral future.
Cancer kills nearly 10 million people globally each year, with China and the U.S. suffering the most loss of life. “This is a common enemy of humanity,” said Dr. Bob Li, Physician Ambassador to China and Asia-Pacific from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, or MSK, in New York.
His suggestion to quicken progress in the fight against it: More collaboration between the U.S. and China in clinical trials that would help bring new treatments to patients faster. “Clinical trials have evolved over the last few decades, particularly in the last decade where international clinical trials have become a reality. And this is where China has actually really demonstrated its contribution,” said Li, who is also a Senior Fellow on Global Public Health at the Center for China Analysis.
Trials involving China with a lung cancer EGFR inhibitor pill, for instance, accelerated their use in treatments in the U.S. and helped to save lives, said Li, who highlighted a “cure4cancer” program being launched by the Asia Society this year that seeks to widely promote that goal.
Widening participation in trials not just with China but globally is “critical” to the cancer fight, noted Dr. Selwyn Vickers, a pancreatic cancer surgeon and researcher who took up a new post as president and CEO at MSK in September. “It’d be shortsighted not to understand that international engagement is going to be critical in order for us to accomplish the goal of curing cancer,” Vickers said. “The fundamental part of the mission in MSK is to be able to lead the world in this space. And probably the most practical way to do it is in clinical trials.” Diversity among participants is important for trials to be effective because of “the broad diversity that represents the scope of cancer disease in the world,” Vickers said. “And then there obviously needs to be efficacy.”
Kate Logan, a fellow at the Center for China Analysis, highlighted the potential benefits of U.S.-China collaboration toward environmental goals. President Xi Jinping said in 2020 that China will strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
China has the resources and commitment to achieve its goals, she said. “China has the most massive renewable buildout in the entire world, and is investing incredibly in all these different technologies that we need to decarbonize,” said Logan, a graduate of the Yale School of the Environment and Middlebury College. “It’s not really an issue of money or technology. It really is an issue of motivation and where the policy plays out in practice.”
Private actors have room to advance their efforts in China through organizations such as the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, a Beijing non-profit founded by Chinese environmentalist Ma Jun where Logan directed international outreach and green supply chain initiatives. Logan is also co-founder and former producer of Environment China, a podcast on solutions to China’s environmental challenges.
Elsa Ruiz/Asia Society
To be sure, collaboration between the U.S. and China can only be substantial with mutual decisions by governments to give it space to develop, said Asia Society CEO and founding chair of the Center for China Analysis Kevin Rudd. The former Australian prime minister and Mandarin-speaking China expert explored the topic in his 2021 book, “The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the U.S. and Xi Jinping’s China.”
The two countries as a first precondition to that end need to identify red lines around critical issues that could escalate into crisis, with guard rails around them to reduce the risk of war by accident, Rudd explained. That would cover geopolitical hotspots such as Taiwan, the South China Sea, the Korean peninsula as well as cyberspace, each of which brings “risks on a daily basis,” Rudd said.
“Second, if you do that, then you can have what I describe as non-lethal strategic competition” that would cover foreign policy, economics, technology and ideology areas, Rudd said.
Leaders in both countries can then provide “political and diplomatic capital in the relationship to encourage collaboration between China and the United States in areas of common strategic interest, by which I mean, global public health, by which I mean global action (on) climate change (and) by which I mean continued global financial stability,” Rudd said.
“Rational grounds for hope exist because these two countries, these two cultures, these two civilizations have things in common,” Rudd said. The two sides need to apply a “magnifying glass to what they have in the common interest and the common interests they wish to pursue. And, unfashionable as I sound, some of the common values that they share.”
Asia Society
Other event speakers and panelists at the Asia Society event included former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, as well as Wu Guoguang, senior research scholar at the Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions; Chris Johnson, president of political risk consultancy China Strategies Group; Evan Medeiros, former top Asia advisor to President Barack Obama and current Asia studies scholar at Georgetown University; and Rorry Daniels, managing director of the Asia Society Policy Institute. Guest attendees included business leaders Joe Tsai and Ray Dalio.

Sanders, No. 7 Oklahoma State Get Past Texas Tech, 41-31 – KVIA https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/sanders-no-7-oklahoma-state-get-past-texas-tech-41-31-kvia/
By CLIFF BRUNT

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Spencer Sanders ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and No. 7 Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech 41-31 on Saturday.
Sanders passed for 297 yards and ran for 56, and Bryson Green had five catches for a career-high 115 yards for the Cowboys (5-0, 2-0 Big 12).
Texas Tech redshirt freshman Behren Morton got his first career start in place of Donovan Smith. He completed 39 of 62 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns for the Red Raiders (3-3, 1-2).
Jerand Bradley caught eight passes for 119 yards and a touchdown and Trey Cleveland caught nine passes for 110 yards for a Texas Tech team that was playing its fifth straight ranked opponent and already had claimed wins over Houston and Texas.
Morton completed 24 of 39 passes for 220 yards and both scores in the first half to help the Red Raiders take a 24-20 lead at the break. Tech gained 347 yards on 57 plays in the first two quarters.
Sanders rolled out and scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to trim Texas Tech’s lead to 31-29 in the third. Sanders’ shovel pass to Jaden Bray tied the score with 3:18 left in the third quarter.
On Texas Tech’s next possession, Morton made one of his few mistakes. Oklahoma State linebacker Mason Cobb intercepted him and returned the ball 13 yards to the Tech 19. Tanner Brown’s fourth field goal of the game gave the Cowboys a 34-31 lead with 3 seconds left in the third quarter.
THE TAKEAWAY
Texas Tech: The Red Raiders were again competitive against a top-flight opponent. It was just a matter of a few plays here and there. Tech’s other losses were 27-14 at North Carolina State and 37-28 at Kansas State. Four of Tech’s final six games are at home.
Oklahoma State: The Cowboys prevailed, despite the defense getting off to a rough start. The Cowboys allowed just seven points in the second half. They allowed 125 yards in the fourth quarter, but held the Red Raiders scoreless.
UP NEXT
Texas Tech: Hosts West Virginia on Oct. 22.
Oklahoma State: Visits TCU on Oct. 15.

20 Metros With The Most Tour And Travel Guides – Arizona’s Family https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/20-metros-with-the-most-tour-and-travel-guides-arizonas-family/
PHOENIX (Stacker) – Travelers are raring to hit the road and take in some of the best attractions in the United States. More than 30,980 tour and travel guides are ready to show them the way.
Bounce examined employment data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to find which metropolitan areas employ the most tour and travel guides. In addition to the number of people employed in the industry, the data shows that the top 20 destinations that emerged from the study are located near metropolitan areas and state and national parks—destinations which have gained popularity since the pandemic.
Annual salaries were determined with information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics—which showed a mean hourly wage of $15.96—and multiplying that by 40 hours a week for 52 weeks per year. Some things that can be deduced from this information include the length of the tourism season for certain destinations and the intricacies of tours.
Though California, Florida, and Colorado emerged as the states that employ the most tour guides, the top 20 tour destinations listed here only include one California destination. Read on to check out the top 20 destinations and some of the sights that await.

John worries he and others like him will be forgotten about this winter

A Welsh cheesemaker believes businesses who use off-grid energy are being “forgotten about” by the UK government.
John Savage-Onstwedder said his energy costs are “going through the roof”.
Oil and liquefied petroleum gas are not covered by the energy price cap which came into force on October 1.
The UK government said off-grid households will get an extra £100 on top of a £400 payment going to everyone.
It also said details of support for off-grid businesses are expected to be announced soon.
Mr Savage-Onstwedder, who owns Caws Teifi Cheese in Llandysul, said his company struggles with the cost of the alternative fuels for heating.
His business uses liquified petroleum gas (LPG) to heat its buildings and the milk as it is made into cheese.
The price John pays for LPG has increased from 40p a litre to 82p a litre. His annual spend on fuel and electricity has increased from £20,000 to £40,000.
John said the government’s energy support package is not creating a level playing field for businesses.
Image caption,
The cost of refilling the LPG tank used by Caws Teifi Cheese has doubled recently
“If I were making cheese in the urban area, or in the city, I would have the benefit of the price cap of the mains gas and electricity, but living in a rural area we are disadvantaged”.
He has already put up the price of cheese to help cover rising costs, but fears doing so again risks pricing himself out of the market.
“I have twenty-two people [employees], it’s not just twenty-two people, it’s also their families, it’s about forty people that depend for their livelihoods on what we do here
“Why do we have to wait so long in rural areas? It’s already been announced for people living in the cities, we’re at the bottom of the pile and forgotten about really.”
Independent fuel supplier Oil 4 Wales has introduced a one-off delivery of 800 litres of free heating oil for customers aged 80 and over who have been with the company at least two years.
“The elderly especially are struggling”, said founder Colin Owens.
“We hear it every day, people on the phone who’ve lost loved ones.
Image caption,
John Savage-Onstwedder said the worry about costs keeps him awake at night
“They’re desperate, they can’t afford the fuel the way prices have gone.”
He said the company acted in part because of uncertainty around how government support for people living off-grid would work.
“Central government have made a statement and made some money available.
“My own trade organisation -UK and Ireland Fuel Distributors Association (UKIFDA)- emailed me the other day: ‘there is more money available, but we don’t understand how we get it’.
“Nobody knows. It’s illogical”, he added.
One of those benefitting from Oil 4 Wales’s scheme is retired engineer Alan Ellis, 92, from Llangain.
He feels fortunate that with support and some cutting back he can just about afford his energy costs.
Image caption,
Alan Ellis is determined to make his oil supply last as long as he can
He said: “Everybody is going to have to think twice before they actually turn the thermostat up, and I’m one of those who’ll be doing just that.”
Campaign group the Countryside Alliance said the government’s extra £100 payment for off-grid households is a “drop in the ocean”.
“Rural communities are losing out because the policy hasn’t been rural proofed”, said Rachel Evans; the organisation’s director for Wales.
A UK Government official said: “We recognise people are struggling with the rising cost of living, including those who use heating oil to heat their homes.
“That is why, in addition to a payment of £400 from October to March and a two year Energy Price Guarantee for their electricity costs, we will provide a further payment of £100 for households who are off the gas grid.”

Professor Tim Spector Explains The Dangers Of Processed Foods As Part Of His Eye-Opening Series – Daily Mail https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/professor-tim-spector-explains-the-dangers-of-processed-foods-as-part-of-his-eye-opening-series-daily-mail/
The global weight-loss market is worth about £250billion, with much of its profitability hinging on calorie counts and booming sales of diet food and drinks. But when you set the runaway success of this sector against the world’s ever-rising obesity levels, it’s obvious something isn’t working.
I have been an epidemiologist for 30 years, studying how and why diseases occur in different groups of people, and for the past decade I have been leading teams at the cutting edge of nutrition science. The scientists I work with at King’s College London have pioneered research into the far-reaching influence of the microbes which live in our guts, setting new standards for the understanding of the way our bodies metabolise food.
And what is clear to me, and to those with whom I work, is that calorie-counting and diet drinks are likely to have a negative, rather than positive, impact – not just on your weight but on your health in the long term.
Today, in the second extract from my book Food For Life, my aim is to dispel many of those woefully outdated myths that have benefited the food industry, namely: all calories are equal, low-calorie foods are good, artificial sweeteners are healthy and high levels of processing are harmless. And I will explain why I’m convinced that diet drinks are not the answer either.
Today, in the second extract from my book Food For Life, my aim is to dispel many of those woefully outdated myths that have benefited the food industry
It would be logical to assume switching from full sugar to diet drinks should prompt weight loss, and early scientific studies supported this. But, increasingly, the evidence no longer stacks up. Studies show that artificial sweeteners are not harmless and inert and can cause sugar spikes with a negative impact on overall metabolic health and potentially your weight.
Although food companies dress them up as healthy alternatives, they are far from it. The only benefit we see is in reducing tooth decay, but that doesn’t make these drinks a healthy option.
A 2017 review by independent epidemiologists from the UK, US and Brazil found many of the studies were biased – the results for and against artificial sweeteners could go in either direction; positively if the study was funded by the diet drink industry and negatively if sponsored by the sugar industry. Their conclusion, backed in a 2019 BMJ review, was that no country should recommend these drinks as part of a healthy diet.
It is difficult to understand how a zero-calorie drink could make you gain weight.
A slice of toast with your meal or chocolate afterwards carry the same number of calories as when eaten as a mid-morning or late-night snack. But the blood sugar spikes and dips will be much greater when the food or drink are taken as a stand-alone snack, resulting in greater hunger levels in the next three or four hours which in turn make you more likely to choose sugary foods
A POSSIBLE mechanism is that the mismatch between the perception of sweetness and lack of energy as a result of consuming the sweetened product perturbs the normal responses of the brain. It is possible that your brain sends out signals to the body to try to regain the energy it was expecting – making you eat more.
Another mechanism is that artificial sweeteners disrupt the delicate balance of microbes which live in your gut, knocking out some of the helpful ones, shrinking their species diversity and encouraging others to produce unhelpful chemicals which upset our normal metabolism and predispose us to poor sugar metabolism.
It’s likely both mechanisms contribute to an overall disruption of our metabolism, as well as the other ten or so artificial ingredients needed to make these drinks. These ‘so-called’ diet drinks are designed to satisfy a high threshold for sweetness – so you retain a sweet tooth even if you switch from natural sweeteners. This is a major problem in children who will seek out other sources of sweetness.
Do healthy snacks even exist?
Maybe it is our rushed food culture coupled with misguided government advice that encourages snacking between meals but it is notable snacking alone contributes 25 per cent of our energy consumption and contributes to the expansion of our waistlines.
As food companies push a combination of cheap, tasty, highly-processed food and snacks, often with misleading healthy labels, we have gained weight and increased our risk of type 2 diabetes.
It’s not just that snacking results in eating more than we need. Certain foods, such as bread or chocolate, can be much less healthy when eaten on an empty stomach as a ‘snack’.
A slice of toast with your meal or chocolate afterwards carry the same number of calories as when eaten as a mid-morning or late-night snack.
But the blood sugar spikes and dips will be much greater when the food or drink are taken as a stand-alone snack, resulting in greater hunger levels in the next three or four hours which in turn make you more likely to choose sugary foods.
Our bodies and gut microbes appreciate time between meals when they can rest from digestion.
Worryingly, many of the different chemical sweeteners are being combined with other supposedly ‘natural’ versions such as xylitol, erythritol, mannitol or isomalt. This increasing complexity of chemical mixtures, which we have not encountered in nature before, risks confusing our body and microbes even more, potentially altering our normal metabolism and behaviours. Diet foods are no better.
We used to believe that the only bad thing about ultra-processed foods such as sweetened breakfast cereals, ice cream, packaged soups and sauces and tortilla chips was that they contained too much fat, sugar and salt. So if a reformulated version appeared with reduced amounts of these ingredients and lower calories it would be fine to eat, we assumed.
But we have ignored the fact for too long that these foods are completely lacking in natural structure, also known as the food matrix, and are made up of many chemicals, which make us feel hungrier, and are associated with an increased risk of disease and earlier death as shown in many published studies.
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) typically contain very low levels of good-quality protein, fibre and beneficial plant chemicals (polyphenols) – because any original plant content will have been stripped of nutrients and outer coatings and made into a pulp. They are cleverly designed to be highly profitable (with low-cost ingredients and long shelf-lives), convenient (ready- to-consume), hyper-palatable (addictive) products and studies have shown that ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are so palatable that we regularly eat far more of them than we need. Which is great news for the food companies but bad news for our health and it concerns me that UPFs are now the source of more than half the average adult’s calories in the UK. And this is even higher in children and teens, rising from 30 per cent in the early 2000s (according to the European Food Safety Association food consumption database).
Studies show that artificial sweeteners are not harmless and inert and can cause sugar spikes with a negative impact on overall metabolic health and potentially your weight
The UK wins the dubious prize of being one of the countries that consumes the most UPFs in the world, according to the UK Public Health Policy Evaluation Unit. The data is still unclear on the exact mechanism by which eating ultra-processed foods causes over-eating. It could be that the additives and chemicals used in the processing directly affect our brains or our gut microbes, or it could be the softer textures make them easier – and faster – to eat, upsetting the natural signals of satiety to the brain and increasing our eating speed.
Another problem with UPFs is that the sugars in them are readily available as they have been ‘stripped’ from their natural food matrix and cause more sugar peaks and dips which lead to hunger pangs and subsequently over-eating.
The big problem is that no foods in nature possess this heady, addictive mix, so we lack any evolutionary defence mechanism to stop us gorging on them. As a result, no matter how many ‘lite’ or ‘reduced fat’ or ‘low-calorie’ ultra-processed foods we eat, we are becoming fatter but less nourished. And going vegetarian is not necessarily a healthy choice, if you rely on highly processed fake meats. A recent observational study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vegetarian communities living on meat-free UPFs were at equal risk of early death as those who eat red meat.
Another problem with UPFs is that the sugars in them are readily available as they have been ‘stripped’ from their natural food matrix and cause more sugar peaks and dips which lead to hunger pangs and subsequently over-eating
If you do want to keep your weight within a healthy range, I don’t recommend calorie counting. The numbers ignore the complexity of our metabolism and the individual and variable response we each have at every meal.
Even if calorie counts (on apps, websites and packaging) were accurate, 350 calories of focaccia, mushroom omelette, deep-pan pizza, gingerbread latte, panini, Caesar salad or ratatouille won’t have the same effect on your metabolism and appetite.
No two people will respond in the same way either and our reactions to any food will vary according to myriad different factors including your gut microbiome composition, metabolic responses to fat and sugar, the time of day, how hungry or not you are, whether you’ve slept well or badly, whether you’ve exercised or are stressed.
Our response to food changes as we age, affected by stress, sleep quality, hormones and illness –...

No. 3 Ohio State hits the road for the first time all season as it faces Big Ten East foe Michigan State. While both teams were among the best in the division last season, there has been a widening gap in the first weeks of 2022 as the Buckeyes have mostly lived up to their expectation of being a championship contender while Michigan State is 0-3 against Power Five opponents.
Ohio State has dealt with injury issues to key offensive weapons yet remains one of the most well-rounded teams in the country. Only Alabama can match OSU in boasting a top-10 ranking in both total offense and total defense heading into the weekend, and the Buckeyes’ depth has even gotten tested with the decision to remain aggressive deep into lopsided wins. Ohio State has scored touchdowns in 18 of the 20 quarters it has played while getting off to a 5-0 start beating opponents by an average of 34 points. Even when the backups are in — which they will be in this game — the talent and motivation of this Ohio State program has risen to the occasion.
Michigan State will look to upset the Buckeyes’ rhythm and prove to be a tougher test than the oddsmakers are expecting. Keep it locked here for live scores, updates, analysis and highlights from Ohio State at Michigan State.

IMPT is a brand-new project that strives to use blockchain technology to make the world more sustainable. It is an excellent nominee for the “greenest” cryptocurrency of the year.
After only five days of the presale, the project’s native currency, the IMPT token, has already raised an incredible $2.1 million.
1 IMPT equals $0.018 in the first presale phase, and the network has already sold 109 million tokens.

IMPT – Best ESG-friendly Crypto to Buy Today
By acquiring carbon credits, the equivalent of offsetting 1 ton of carbon, individuals and businesses can lower their impact on the environment through IMPT. To address the problems now confronting the sector, IMPT has decided to tokenize carbon credits.
This will eliminate any issues with double-spending tokens and greatly boost the industry’s openness. Several options exist for acquiring carbon credits. In the first place, you can get them from the IMPT market.
However, IMPT has partnered with over 10,000 brands to award users with IMPT tokens merely for buying, making it possible for anyone without access to a cryptocurrency exchange to get their hands on some. Carbon credits can be bought and exchanged with these tokens.
IMPT Uses NFTs for Carbon Credits
With IMPT, NFTs can be employed in a brand new context: as a form of carbon offset. Putting carbon credits on a blockchain makes them much harder to falsify than any other method.
The public nature of the ledger makes it extremely difficult for carbon credits to be abused in any significant sense. It also ensures that they are constantly transparent, neither of which would be feasible without this system.
IMPT Marketplace
Carbon credits can be purchased, sold, and retired in the IMPT carbon marketplace. To create a market for carbon credits, NFTs are created. When used in carbon markets, blockchain technology eliminates the chance of double counting and fraud.
An independent auditor checks all carbon credits on the IMPT platform to ensure they were generated per the Global Certification Protocols.
Carbon credit issuers and holders must complete a Know Your Customer (KYC) process. Moreover, the carbon trading platform IMPT operates on three tiers:
First Tier
Tokens for the IMPT platform can be obtained by anyone at Level 1 using cryptocurrency or fiat currency.
The user can save these IMPT tokens and then use them to purchase carbon credits.
The blockchain-based NFTs will replace the carbon credits.
Second Tier
Users can trade and sell their carbon credit tokens on the market. Only IMPT tokens can be used to pay for goods and services, and users can either burn their carbon credit tokens to lower their carbon footprint and see an effect immediately or hold on to the tokens as an investment.
Third Tier
Users can buy and sell valuable NFTs obtained by burning carbon credit tokens in the third and final tier. The user who burnt the carbon credit tokens and the artist who designed the collectible NFT would each own a unique work of art.

If you want to buy IMPT tokens, you’re in luck because the IMPT presale is still going on. However, the IMPT presale appears to be completely sold out well ahead of its scheduled end date of November 25.

Biden Admin Says It Has Reunited 500 Migrant Families Separated At US Border During Trump-Era Fox News
Biden Admin Says It Has Reunited 500 Migrant Families Separated At US Border During Trump-Era – Fox News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/biden-admin-says-it-has-reunited-500-migrant-families-separated-at-us-border-during-trump-era-fox-news/
The Biden administration says that it has reunified 500 migrant families who were separated during the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy that aimed to stop illegal immigration into the U.S.
“This is a significant milestone that reflects the tireless dedication of the many public servants in the Department of Homeland Security and across the federal government, including those in the Departments of Health and Human Services, State, and Justice,” Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.
“It is a milestone that we could not have achieved without the partnership and critical work of several incredibly committed non-governmental organizations,” he said.
Mayorkas said that nearly 200 minors are in the process of being united with their parents.

The Trump administration implemented the “zero tolerance” policy in 2018 to counteract a surge in illegal immigration at the border, prosecuting all illegal entries. However, accompanying children who came as part of a family unit could not be housed in adult detention centers with their accompanying adults.
The Trump administration’s response was to separate the minors from their accompanying adults, placing them in Health and Human Services (HHS) care and allowing for detention and deportation of the adults. It was intended to dissuade migrant families from making the journey north in the first place.
After outrage over the separations, President Donald Trump ended the policy. When the Biden administration took over, it pledged to make sure that any illegal immigrant who had been separated from their child is brought into the U.S. and reunited. To ensure this happens, it launched the Family Reunification Task Force.
Those identified as eligible are brought in via a process called humanitarian parole. Travel is paid for, they can bring relatives and also live and work in the U.S. for three years on a renewable status.
BIDEN PARDON FOR SIMPLE MARIJUANA POSSESSION WON’T APPLY TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
In his statement, Mayorkas pledged that the Family Reunification Task Force’s work would continue.
“The Task Force, through its partners, also continues to identify and engage families who were separated to ensure they are aware of the reunification process and the support the Task Force has arranged,” he said. “This support includes critically needed behavioral health services to assist the families in addressing the trauma they have suffered.”

Meanwhile, a lawsuit is still ongoing as illegal immigrants who were separated sue the U.S. over the policy. A prior settlement, which would have dished out up to $450,000 per person, was abandoned after it was leaked and caused outraged from Republicans.

First Half Lookback: Virginia Tech At Pitt VT Hokiesports.com
First Half Lookback: Virginia Tech At Pitt – VT Hokiesports.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/first-half-lookback-virginia-tech-at-pitt-vt-hokiesports-com/
In a back-and-forth battle that saw two lead changes and plenty of momentum swings, it was Pitt which entered intermission on top of Virginia Tech 17-16.
The Hokies outgained the Panthers 235-181 over the first 30 minutes, doing most of their damage through the air with 156 passing yards. Pitt was 4-of-8 on third down while Tech completed two of its seven third down tries. The Hokies went a perfect 3-of-3 in the red zone while the Panthers held a slight edge in the time of possession battle.
After Tech appeared set to open the scoring on its first two drives, Pitt would be the one to strike first on its second possession, going the length of the field over 11 plays in a drive that ran more than five minutes off the clock. The Panthers’ junior running back Israel Abanikanda finished the drive with a 38-yard rushing touchdown to get the hosts on the board with less than four minutes left in the first quarter.
The Hokies responded with a touchdown drive of their own on the ensuing possession. Quarterback Grant Wells connected with wide receiver Kaleb Smith down the right sideline for a 37-yard catch on a play that saw Pitt penalized for roughing the passer, tacking on 15 more yards. On his first carry of the season, running back Malachi Thomas punched it in from five yards out for his fourth career score.
Tech would add to its lead thanks to an 18-yard field goal from kicker William Ross early in the second quarter, extending his streak of made field goals to eight.
On the next Pitt possession, a pass from Panthers quarterback Kedon Slovis bounced off the hands of a receiver before Tech linebacker Keonta Jenkins came down with the interception. It was the first interception of Jenkins’ career and gave the Hokies great field position at the host’s 25-yard line.
Two plays later, running back Keshawn King scored from 19 yards out to give Tech a 16-7 edge. It was King’s second touchdown of the season and fifth of his career.
Pitt answered with another touchdown followed by a field goal on its next possession to retake the lead. The Hokies closed the first half with another impressive drive, advancing to the Panthers’ 23-yard line before a penalty and sack pushed them out of field goal range. A last-second hail mary from Wells was picked off at the goal line, resulting in the halftime margin.
Can Newhouse Hold On To Washingtons Most Conservative District After Trump Impeachment Vote? Centralia Chronicle
Can Newhouse Hold On To Washington’s Most Conservative District After Trump Impeachment Vote? – Centralia Chronicle https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/can-newhouse-hold-on-to-washingtons-most-conservative-district-after-trump-impeachment-vote-centralia-chronicle/
Orion Donovan-Smith / The Spokesman-Review
WASHINGTON — In his nearly eight years representing central Washington in the House, Dan Newhouse has fended off challengers from across the political spectrum and carved out a niche as a pragmatic lawmaker more interested in policy than bluster.
But this year’s general election presents the Republican from Sunnyside with a new kind of challenge: convincing voters in the state’s reddest district to look past his vote to impeach former President Donald Trump and give him the support they largely withheld in the August primary.
Newhouse and his Democratic opponent, Yakima businessman Doug White, each received roughly 25% of votes in the primary, enough to advance from the top-two contest only because six other GOP candidates who aligned themselves with Trump split the remaining half of votes. What that pro-Trump voting bloc does in the general election will play a big role in determining the outcome.
“It’s the most conservative district in the state of Washington,” Newhouse said in an interview, “so my strategy and my message has been to appeal to those people that have supported me in the past and to remind them that I’m still the same conservative Republican that I’ve always been.”
The Cook Political Report rates Washington’s 4th Congressional District “R+11,” meaning Republican candidates are expected to perform 11 percentage points better than the national average and making it the most heavily GOP-leaning district in the state. Newhouse bested Democratic challengers in 2018 and 2020 by a roughly 2-to-1 margin while his closest races came in 2014 and 2016 against fellow Republican Clint Didier, now a Franklin County commissioner.
But White, a first-time candidate who returned home to Yakima after a 20-year career in international business, thinks right-wing voters’ lingering resentment toward Newhouse makes the incumbent vulnerable. Pitching himself as a solutions-oriented moderate, White said in an interview he hopes to assemble a coalition of reliable Democratic voters, independents and conservatives who want to see Newhouse gone.
“Obviously, it’s an uphill battle,” White said, before citing a recent internal poll his campaign commissioned that makes him optimistic. The survey’s most important finding, he said, is that 40% of Republicans in the district “would vote for a Democrat if that Democrat had the profile that I do.”
“This is a completely different game,” White said. “We’ve literally never seen this in this district before. My message is resonating well with people. They’re fed up with Dan Newhouse and we’re going to see a change.”
A spokesman for the White campaign, John Wyble, declined to share the full poll results but said it shows that Newhouse is “a divisive figure,” even among Republicans, and the race narrows to within the margin of error “after voters hear about Doug White.”
There has been no independent polling this year in the district, which national political analysts consider safely in GOP hands. But White isn’t the only one who thinks the pro-Trump electorate could throw a wrench in Newhouse’s re-election bid.
“I’ve heard a lot of people say that they’re going to vote for White because they cannot get over what Newhouse did, and I’ve heard a lot of people say they’re not going to vote at all,” said Teagan Levine, chair of the Okanogan County GOP.
Levine said when she has told those voters to “take Newhouse’s name out of it” and “look at the bigger picture,” they have usually agreed to vote for the Republican, but she is concerned that not every disaffected voter in the district will get that message before casting their ballots.
If GOP voters can’t get over Newhouse’s impeachment vote, Levine said, she worries they will jeopardize the party’s chances of taking control of the House — and in turn the odds of a Republican winning the presidency in 2024.
None of the Republicans Newhouse bested in the primary have formally endorsed the incumbent although some said they plan to vote for him.
“Newhouse is in trouble, for sure, just talking to people,” said Jerrod Sessler, a former NASCAR driver from Prosser who took 12.3% of votes in the primary, adding that he has encouraged others to vote for Newhouse. “There’s a lot of people voting for Doug White, or they’re going to abstain.”
Jacek Kobiesa, an engineer from Pasco who entered the race late and received just 490 votes, called the race “a huge mess” but said he would vote for Newhouse.
Corey Gibson, a marketing entrepreneur from Selah who won 3.4% of votes, said he has received “so many calls” from conservatives who say they are considering voting for White, “not because they align with him, but because there’s this energy out there of wanting to be heard, wanting to be able to show that people want something different.”
Gibson said he expects Newhouse to win the general election, but said he worries having such a “wildly unpopular” candidate could depress voter turnout in the district and hurt other Republicans, like Senate candidate Tiffany Smiley.
Loren Culp, a former Republic police chief who won Trump’s endorsement and 21.6% of votes in the primary, said he doesn’t plan to vote for either Newhouse or White.
“They’re both Democrats,” Culp said. “One of them just lies to us and tells us he’s a Republican.”
With the 50% of primary voters who backed neither Newhouse nor White theoretically up for grabs, there is a potential opening for a write-in candidate to enter the race. State law prevents a losing primary candidate from running a write-in campaign for the same office, but some voters have encouraged Didier, the Franklin County commissioner who ran for the seat in 2014 and 2016, to mount a write-in campaign.
In a text message, Didier confirmed he has had “an incredible amount of people want me to run as a write in,” but said he had no plans to do so.
Mike Massey, chair of the Benton County GOP, said he estimates as many as one-third of conservatives “can’t put the clothes pin over their nose” and vote for Newhouse.
“I’m going to vote for Dan because I have learned in the past that if you don’t support your party, it can really damage things,” Massey said, recalling how he voted in the 1992 presidential race for independent Ross Perot, whose candidacy helped Democrat Bill Clinton defeat Republican George H.W. Bush.
Mike McKee, chair of the Grant County GOP, said he expects Newhouse to prevail but also worries many Republicans will not vote for him.
“I just tell them, ‘Dan may not have been your first, second, third or fourth selection, but he’s won fair and square and now it’s time to fire (House speaker Nancy) Pelosi,'” McKee said, adding with a chuckle, “I can guarantee that Dan Newhouse is not going to vote to impeach another Republican president in the next two years.”
The Washington State Republican Party didn’t endorse a candidate ahead of the August primary, but officially “nominated” him as the party’s candidate after he won the primary, party spokesman Ben Gonzalez said.
For his part, Newhouse is counting on most of the district’s Republican-leaning voters forgiving him for the impeachment vote. In an interview, he alluded to a quote attributed to conservative icon Ronald Reagan, who reportedly said, “The person who agrees with you 80% of the time is a friend and an ally, not a 20% traitor.”
In that spirit, Newhouse said, he hopes his conservative constituents who have supported him in the past will see the race against White as a clear choice between Republican and Democratic platforms.
“I think if they sit down and think about that, even though they’re angry with me for one vote, that’s still better than the other choice that they have in front of them,” he said. “So we’re doing the best that we can to communicate that message.”
When a new Congress is sworn in at the start of 2023, Newhouse may be the only remaining member of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. The only other pro-impeachment Republican who survived the primaries, Rep. David Valadao of California, is in a tight race the Cook Political Report rates as a toss-up.
He will also be among a dwindling number of House Republicans who are interested in working with Democrats on bipartisan legislation as the GOP conference is increasingly dominated by hardline members who say their top priority in the next two years is investigating and even impeaching members of the Biden administration.
Newhouse, a third-generation Yakima Valley farmer, is one of the leading advocates for bipartisan immigration reform to create a reliable, legal supply of U.S. agricultural workers, about half of whom are unauthorized immigrants, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That effort has drawn the ire of anti-immigration hardliners, but Newhouse said he believes 4th District voters want solutions to problems that affect the region.
“The fact that I’m pragmatic, solutions-oriented, willing to work with people on both sides of the aisle in order to find those solutions, I don’t see that as a negative,” he said. “I think that’s what people expect of me.”
As chairman of the Congressional Western Caucus, a group of House Republicans focused on rural issues and limited government, Newhouse said he tries to cultivate an interest in conservative policy — rather than political grandstanding — among fellow GOP lawmakers.
“Certainly you have those that want to just get headlines or become famous on social media and those kinds of things,” he said, “but there actually are a good number of members of Congress that want to get things done for their constituents as well, and my jo...
India Kicks Off Bank Divestments – The Daily Star https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/india-kicks-off-bank-divestments-the-daily-star/
The Indian government is looking to sell a 60.72 per cent stake in $5.6 billion IDBI Bank and has invited expressions of interest, it said on Friday, setting the ball rolling on a series of planned divestments to reduce the budget deficit.
In 2020, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced plans to privatise most state-run companies, including banks, mining companies and insurers.
Many state-run banks are saddled with bad debt and have been a drag on growth.
State-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India will be diluting its holding in IDBI Bank as part of the sale process with the total stake sale comprising a 30.48 per cent stake from the government and a 30.24 per cent stake from LIC.
At the end of June the Indian government held 45.48 per cent of IDBI bank while LIC held 49.24 per cent.
IDBI had a market value of 459.13 billion rupees ($5.57 billion) as of Friday’s close.
Banks, foreign lenders, shadow banks, alternate investment funds and offshore funds have been allowed to place bids. However, large industrial and corporate houses and individuals are not eligible to bid.
Bids can be submitted by single entities or as part of a consortium and potential bidders should have a minimum capital net worth of at least 225 billion Indian rupees or $2.85 billion.
The short-listed bidders will also have to pass a “fit and proper” assessment of the central bank. The successful bidder will be required to make an open offer to public shareholders of IDBI Bank.
The public holds a 5.29 per cent stake in IDBI Bank as of the end of June.
The successful bidder will also be mandated to lock in at least 40 per cent of the paid up and voting equity share capital of IDBI Bank for five years from the date of the acquisition.
In the case of a consortium, there will be a lock-in in proportion to holdings of the investment vehicle, according to the central bank guidelines.
The ceiling on voting rights is set at 26 per cent in line with existing rules for private banks. Even though state-owned LIC and the government hold a majority stake in IDBI Bank, the government categorises it as a private lender.
The last date for submission of expression of interest has been set at December 16.
The government announced plans to sell its stake in IDBI Bank last year, something it has considered for several years.
“The bank’s financial health has improved and it is in a much better position now, so it may not be as difficult to divest a stake in the bank as it was five-six years ago,” said Ashvin Parekh, an independent banking consultant.
IDBI is a mid-sized lender which in the three months to June 30 made a net profit of 7.56 billion rupees, up from 6.03 billion rupees a year earlier. Net bad loans were 19.9 per cent.

Ghana Ukraine To Deepen Cooperation In Trade Ghana Business News
Ghana, Ukraine To Deepen Cooperation In Trade – Ghana Business News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/ghana-ukraine-to-deepen-cooperation-in-trade-ghana-business-news/
Shirley Ayorkor-Botchwey
Ghana and Ukraine have signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation in trade and the training of diplomatic staff.
Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, signed for Ghana, while Mr Dmytro Kuleba, the visiting Ukrainian Foreign Minister, signed for his country.
Mr Kuleba is in Ghana to deliver a special message from the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Accompanying him is a business delegation, who would hold meetings with their Ghanaian counterparts and key government institutions, including the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre.
Prior to signing the MoU, the two ministers held discussions on issues of common interest, aimed at strengthening the bilateral relations between Ghana and Ukraine, and the need for deepening of economic ties in the areas of trade, security and education.
The discussions also focused on Ghana’s active participation in deliberations on peace and security at the ECOWAS and the African Union, including efforts to resolve regional conflicts on the continent.
Madam Ayorkor Botchwey noted that the bilateral relations between the two nations dated back to August 1992, which had been strong on the political front and emphasised the need to strengthen trade and economic ties.
She recalled the visit to Ghana 4th April 2018 by the first ever Ukrainian Trade Mission, led by Mrs Nataliia Mykolska, a former Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Trade, which aimed at enhancing trade and economic relations.
She reiterated the need for a stronger collaboration in oil and gas, petrochemicals, and security.
Madam Botchwey underscored the role of state institutions in Ghana like Investment Promotion Centre, the Free Zones Authority, the Export Promotion Authority, and the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in promoting trade and investment.
She expressed the readiness of those institutions to collaborate with their Ukrainian counterparts to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) through the conducive business environment in Ghana.
She called for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, which was impacting negatively on the economies of many countries across the globe, including Ghana.
Mr Kuleba, on his part, commended Ghana for supporting the Ukrainian people during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where the two countries were completely aligned on all major issues of international importance.
He said the statement: “Every bullet and every bomb fired at Ukraine is felt in Africa,” made by President Akufo-Addo at the UN General Assembly, was the clearest and the most eloquent statement, which reflected the global repercussions of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
“We have to stop this war, we will by winning it, because we defend the right cause, the principle of sovereignty, the principle of territorial integrity of the nation”.
Mr Kuleba said Ukraine would soon be opening a full diplomatic mission in Accra.

LITTLE ROCK — A team of Arkansas 4-H members celebrated National 4-H Week by competing in the National 4-H Food Challenge finals and returning home with a sixth-place win.
Adelene Westfall, Sarah Lamb, and Christian Trombley— competing as the “Seniors with Spatulas” — competed against 10 other teams from Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming at the competition, held Oct. 4 at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.
The Arkansas youth are members of the Howard County Teen Leader Club and longtime members of Arkansas 4-H. Westfall and Lamb, who attend Nashville High School, were part of the 2021 team that placed fifth at nationals last year. Trombley, a homeschooled student, joined the team this year. To qualify for the national competition, the teens won the Arkansas 4-H Food Challenge in August.
“I’m super proud of them,” said Howard County Extension Agent Jean Ince, who coached the team and accompanied them to the competition. “They have all been cooking for a long time and still they learned so much.”
Although they had hoped to win top honors, the trio felt good about their performance.
“Our dish was good, and we did a good presentation,” Lamb said.
“We knew so much more this year than last year,” Westfall added. “We felt really good going into their competition.”
The Food Challenge not only tests participants’ cooking skills, but also their knowledge about nutrition, health and food safety and their ability to effectively communicate as a team. During the competition, the teams had 40 minutes to prepare a dish using the main ingredient — which wasn’t unveiled until the start of the competition.
After plating their dish, teams had five minutes to present their dish to judges and discuss food preparation, safety concerns, serving size information, cost analysis and nutritional information. Judges considered appearance, quality, creativity, effective communication and teamwork when scoring.
For the past two months, the team has met weekly to practice their skills using different ingredients from the four groups: protein, grains, dairy, fruits and vegetables.
Mystery ingredients
White beans were the star of the preliminary round. The Arkansas team created a soup using the canned beans, chicken broth, shredded chicken, cheese, chives, cumin and salt and garnished with tomato. Judges liked their soup well enough to advance the team to the final round where they were tasked with cooking with fresh mushrooms. The team created a Mediterranean-inspired dish using couscous, mushrooms, feta and vegetables.
“I felt confident coming out of second round because we had worked with couscous and mushrooms before,” Westfall said. “We had previously made a recipe with eggplant and couscous, and when we saw there was couscous available, we swapped the eggplant for mushrooms.”

The teens spent the past few months practicing both their culinary skills and how to work as a team. Each had a defined role. Lamb — who her teammates call the ‘boss lady’ — took the lead in the recipe development and decided the menu with team input.
“My goal is always to have a bright, colorful, good-looking dish,” she said.
Lamb frequently cooks for her family, competes in BBQ competitions and hopes to own a bakery one day.
Trombley — the team’s ‘wingman’ — functioned as the sous chef, chopping and mincing ingredients, prepping the work space and ensuring food safety.
Westfall, a 4-H Ambassador and member of the state Healthy Living team, is considered the team’s scribe. She meticulously recorded the ingredients, proportions, nutritional content, serving size and notes needed for the team’s presentation to judges.
Skills for a lifetime
Healthy living is one of tenets of the 4-H program, which offers programs in nutrition, fitness, substance abuse, safety and social and emotional wellness.
“We strive to equip young people with healthy living knowledge and skills to physically, emotionally, and socially prepare them to meet today’s challenges,” said Amanda Welch, a 4-H youth development associate for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. Welch coordinates the statewide 4-H Food Challenge.
Last year, Arkansas 4-H applied for and received a Healthy Habits grants from the National 4-H Council and Wal-Mart Foundation.
“Most of the grant money went to counties to use for healthy living programs,” Welch said. “Howard County used grant money to purchase cooking utensils and supplies required for the competition.”
The teens all said they enjoyed the experience. For Trombley, it was because of the “friendship and teamwork.” Lamb said she is more comfortable with public speaking because of the competition, and Westfall, who memorized nutritional value of foods for the competition, said that information will continue to help her.
“I’ve learned so much about our bodies and what they need to function that I never would’ve thought about before this challenge,” Westfall said. “It’s taught me a lot that I can use to improve my health and my family’s.”
4-H is the premier youth development program of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service. Programs are offered in every county in Arkansas. Warriors Draymond Green Takes Leave Of Absence Following Apology For Punch On Jordan Poole CBS Sports
Warriors’ Draymond Green Takes Leave Of Absence Following Apology For Punch On Jordan Poole – CBS Sports https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/warriors-draymond-green-takes-leave-of-absence-following-apology-for-punch-on-jordan-poole-cbs-sports/
During a press conference Saturday afternoon, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green publicly apologized for punching teammate Jordan Poole in the face on Wednesday. Green, who did not practice with the team Thursday or Friday, expressed remorse for his actions, saying that he “failed as a leader.”
“I was wrong for my actions that took place on Wednesday,” Green said. “For that, I have apologized to my team. I have apologized to Jordan.”
Green also announced that he will be stepping away from the team for a few days after the incident. When Warriors general manager Bob Myers addressed the media on Thursday to discuss the incident, he said that punishment for Green would be handled internally. It’s unclear if Green’s decision to step away from the team was his decision alone, or if the Warriors also agreed to the idea.
In regards to where Green’s relationship with Poole stands currently, he said there’s work ahead of him to repair it.
“That is on me to do the work to rebuild but on his time,” Green said. “If he ever wants to do that. That is a personal choice for Jordan and I have to accept whatever comes with that.”
Green also admitted that right now it’s difficult to face Jordan after the events that transpired.
“If I’m being honest, it’s hard for me to walk up to Jordan right now,” Green said.

It was reported in the late hours of Wednesday night that Green had punched Poole in the face during practice that day. Then, on Thursday, the Warriors confirmed the report, while also stating that punishment would be handled internally. However, a video of Green punching Poole was leaked on Friday, adding more fuel to the fire of the initial altercation.
When asked what caused Green to punch Poole in the face, he said he was in a bad space mentally.
“I was dealing with some things in my personal life that — if you are dealing with something when you step on the court it just doesn’t go away,” Green said. “As a leader of this team, I needed to have a better feel for myself and understand like where my wits end was, and what could possibly push me the wrong way. Quite frankly I didn’t handle that well, and I failed as a leader. And in turn, I failed as a man. For me personally, I have to take what comes with that, I have to deal with that, and continue to better myself.”
While Green plans to take a few days away from the team to recoup from this situation, all eyes are on if he plays in Golden State’s season opener on Oct. 18 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Though Green says he expects to play, he questioned if he will.
“I expect to play. But will I play? That is a completely different story and something we will figure out,” Green said.

Crypto Mining Metrics Roundup: Bitcoin Production Slips In September Hashrate Climbs Seeking Alpha
Crypto Mining Metrics Roundup: Bitcoin Production Slips In September, Hashrate Climbs – Seeking Alpha https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/crypto-mining-metrics-roundup-bitcoin-production-slips-in-september-hashrate-climbs-seeking-alpha/
luza studios
Cryptocurrency miners saw a modest decline in the number of bitcoins (BTC-USD) mined in September vs. August, as an increase in the network hashrate and difficulty screamed trouble for profit margins.
The so-called difficulty of mining is a closely watched metric in the crypto ecosystem. It measures how hard it is to mine a bitcoin (BTC-USD) block based on the amount of participants and computing power (hashing power) used to mine and secure the blockchain. A high difficulty (as a result of high hashing power), as is the case now, tends to lower miners’ profitability. Difficulty is currenting sitting around record highs at 31.36 trillion vs. 30.97 trillion a month ago, according to data from blockchain.com.
The bitcoin (BTC-USD) network’s hashrate, which measures how much computing power is being used to process transactions on the blockchain, is standing at an all-time high of nearly 255 exahash per second, in a move that underscores margin compression in the mining industry, according to blockchain.com data. That’s up from 225 EH/s a month before.
Despite a backdrop of a higher network hashrate and difficulty along with suppressed bitcoin (BTC-USD) prices, miners’ revenue has edged up in September, rising to $22.4M at the end of the month from $16.6M at the beginning of the month, as per blockchain.com data. Still, that’s down from $40.9M in the year-ago period.
Overall, crypto miners’ bitcoin (BTC-USD) production ticked down 1.1% on average, while the hashrate jumped 10.6%, according to the table below. Some companies cited a shorter month as one of the key issues in less BTC production.
Looking at the miners individually, Marathon Digital (MARA), CleanSpark (CLSK) and Iris Energy (IREN) were the only ones that produced more BTC than the prior month. Note the following miners have yet to report their September numbers: Hive Blockchain (HIVE), BitNile (NILE), Argo Blockchain (ARBK) and Greenidge Generation (GREE).
Furthermore, most miners continued to sell their bitcoin (BTC-USD) holdings as capital dried up amid soaring power prices thus shrinking profit margins. During the month, Bitfarms (BITF) sold 544 BTC, Riot (RIOT) sold 300 BTC, CleanSpark (CLSK) sold 380 BTC, and Core Scientific (CORZ) sold 1,576 BTC.
For Bitfarms (BITF), in particular, SA contributor Gary Bourgeault believes the company’s 10% drop in BTC production “may have been an anomaly.”
“The key for BITF through the remainder of 2022 and early into 2023 will be the CPI release,” he added. “If things are shown to improve, high-growth assets are going to attract more investment, and BITF will benefit from that.”
Take a look at the chart here to see how shares of miners have fared in September compared with bitcoin (BTC-USD).
Earlier last week, (Oct. 6) Grayscale launched a new unit to invest in bitcoin mining hardware in the wake of discounted prices.

US Soccer President Tells CNN More Misconduct Cases Reported The Washington Post
US Soccer President Tells CNN More Misconduct Cases Reported – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/us-soccer-president-tells-cnn-more-misconduct-cases-reported-the-washington-post/
The U.S. Soccer Federation received three new reports of misconduct in the sport this week after details of systemic emotional abuse and sexual misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League were revealed in an independent investigation, U.S. Soccer Federation President Cindy Parlow Cone told CNN.
Parlow Cone was interviewed twice Friday by the television network and didn’t provide details of the new misconduct cases. She said the U.S. Center for SafeSport and other authorities have been made aware of the three new reports.
“I’m also hoping that people do feel safe now to come forward or are … learning about where to come forward to report this because this is so important,” Parlow Cone told CNN. “We’re not going to be able to root it out unless more brave people come forward to tell us.”
Five of 10 NWSL coaches either were fired or stepped down last season amid allegations of misconduct.
More than 200 people were interviewed by investigators looking into the allegations of harassment and sexual coercion and abuse. The NWSL, U.S. Soccer, teams and individuals provided documents. The independent investigation, run by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Q. Yates and the law firm King & Spaulding, focused on three former coaches: Paul Riley, with the Portland Thorns and later the North Carolina Courage, Christy Holly of Racing Louisville and Rory Dames of the Chicago Red Stars.
On Wednesday, the Portland Thorns dismissed a pair of team executives a day after owner Merritt Paulson removed himself from a decision-making role with the team. Chicago Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler also stepped back from his role, and Racing Louisville President James O’Connor apologized to fans and a former player who alleged she was sexually abused by Holly.
On Friday, England and the U.S. women’s teams played a friendly before nearly 77,000 fans at Wembley Stadium. They wore teal armbands in solidarity with sexual abuse victims and together held a banner that read “Protect the Players” just before kickoff.
The Yates report made numerous recommendations to prioritize player health and safety. U.S. Soccer also said it would immediately implement programs to protect players.

Texts between the billionaire and some of his tech investor friends show them in a bad light.
In Musk v. Twitter, an aspect of the business life of the richest man in the world is revealed.

The messages were released by the Delaware Chancery Court as part of the proceedings between the two parties.
The revelation of these private messages is undoubtedly one of the reasons which led the billionaire to put back on the table his offer to acquire the platform for $44 billion. And to demand that Twitter (TWTR) – Get Twitter Inc. Report drop its legal action in exchange.

Here are messages Musk exchanged with his tech bros about Twitter.
Some precisions for the good comprehension of some messages: Parag Agrawal is the CEO of Twitter. Morgan Stanley is the bank advising Musk, while Jared Birchall is an adviser to the billionaire.
SVP refers to Special Purpose vehicles.
David Sacks, co-Founder of PayPal, General Partner of Venture Capital Firm Craft Ventures
On April 26, the day after the Twitter deal was announced, Sacks communicated with Musk.
Sacks: Justin Amash (former congressman who’s libertarian and good on free speech) asked for an intro to you. “I believe I can be helpful to twitter’s team going forward – thinking about how to handle speech and moderation, how that intersects with ideas about governance, how to navigate actual government (including future threats to Section 230), etc. – and I’d love to connect with Elon if he’s interested in connecting (I don’t have a direct way to contact him). I believe my experience and experience can be useful, and my general outlook aligns with his stated goals. Thanks. All the best.” Please LMK if you want to connect with him.
Musk: I don’t own Twitter yet.
Sacks: Understood.
Then on April 28:
Musk: Do you and/or find want to invest in the take private?
Musk: fund
Sacks: Yes but I don’t have a vehicle for it (Craft is venture) so either I need to set up an SPV or just do it personally. If the latter, my amount would be mice-nuts in relative terms but I would be happy to participate to support the cause.
Musk: Up to you
Sacks: Ok cool, let me know.
Sacks: I’m in personally and will raise an SPV too if that works for you.
Musk: Sure
Joe Lonsdale, co-Founder of Palantir Technologies, 8VC
On March 24, almost two weeks before Musk revealed that he had become the top shareholder of Twitter, Lonsdale wrote to him.
Lonsdale: I love your ‘Twitter algorithm should be open source’ tweet – I’m actually speaking to over 100 members of congress tomorrow at the GOP policy retreat and this is one of the ideas I’m pushing for reigning in crazy big tech. Now I can cite you so I’ll sound less crazy myself:). Our public squares need to not have arbitrary sketchy censorship.
Musk: Absolutely
Musk: What we have right now is hidden corruption!
On April 4, Lonsdale writes to Musk congratulating him after his Twitter stake was revealed.
Lonsdale: Excited to see the stake in Twitter – awesome. “Back door man” they are saying haha. Hope you’re able to influence it. I bet you the board doesn’t even get full reporting or see any report of the censorship decisions and little cabals going on there but they should – the lefties on the board likely want plausible deniability.
On April 16:
Lonsdale: Haha even Governor DeSantis just called me just now with ideas how to help you and outraged at that board and saying the public is rooting for you. Let me know if you or somebody on your side wants to chat w him. Would be fun to see you if you guys are around this weekend or the next few days.
Musk: Haha cool
Jason Calacanis, Angel Investor, Podcaster.
On April 14, when Musk made his bid to acquire Twitter for $44 billion at $54.20 per share, Calacanis seems to be mocking the company for being hesitant.
Calacanis: You should raise your offer
Calacanis: $54.21
Calacanis: The perfect counter
Calacanis: You could easily clean up bots and spam and make the service viable for many more users – Removing bots and spam is a lot less complicated than what the Tesla self driving team is doing (based on hearing the last edge case meeting)
Calacanis: And why should blue check marks be limited to the elite, press and celebrities? How is that democratic?
On April 15,
Calacanis: Back of the enveloppe… Twitter revenue per employee: $5B rev/8k employees =$625K rev
Per employee in 2021 Google revenue per employee: $257B rev /135K employee =$1.9M
Per employee in 2021 Apple revenue per employee: $365 rev /154k employees = $2.37 M per employee in fiscal 2021
Calacanis: Twitter revenue per employee if 3k instead of 8k: $5B rev/ 3k employees= $1.66m rev per employee in 2021 (more industry standard)
Musk: Insane potential for improvement
Calacanis: Day zero
Calacanis: Sharpen your blades boys
Calacanis: 2 day a week Office requirement = 20% voluntary departures
Calacanis: I mean, the product road map is beyond obviously
Calacanis: Premium feature abound … and twitter blue has exactly zero
Calacanis: What committee came up with the list of dog shit features in Blue?!? It’s worth paying to turn it off
Musk: Yeah, what an insane piece of shit!
Calacanis: Maybe we don’t talk twitter on twitter DM
Musk: Was just thinking that haha
Musk: Nothing said there so far is anything different from what I said publicly
On April 16:
Musk: Btw, Parag is still on a ten day vacation in Hawaii
Calacanis: No reason to cut short … in your first tour as ceo
Calacanis: (!!!)
Calacanis: Shouldn’t he be in a war room right now?!?
Musk: Does doing occasional zoom calls while drinking fruity cocktails at the Four Seasons count?
Calacanis and Musk will exchange a lot in the days that will follow.
On May 13, Musk writes to Calacanis:
Musk: What’s going on with you marketing and SPV to randos? This is not ok.
Calacanis: Not randos, I have the largest angel syndicate and that’s how I invest. We’re done 250+ deals like this and we know all the folks. I though (t) that was how folks were doing it.
Calacanis: $100m+ on commitments, but if that not ok it’s fine. Just wanted to support this effort.
Calacanis: ~300 QPs and 200 accredited investors said they would do it. It’s not an open process obviously, only folks already in our syndicate.
Calacanis: There is *massive* demand to support your effort btw … people really want to see you win.
Musk: Morgan Stanley and Jared think you are using our friendship not in a good way
Musk: This makes it seem like I’m desperate.
Musk: Please stop
Calacanis: Only ever want to support you.
Calacanis: Clearly you’re not desperate – you have the worlds greatest investors voting in support of a deal you already have covered. You’re overfunded. Will quietly cancel it… And to be clear, I’m not out actively soliciting folks. These are our exiting LPs not rondos. Sorry for any trouble.
Musk: Morgan Stanley and Jared are very upset.
The conversation goes.
Calacanis: And you know I’m ride or die brother – I’d jump on a grande for you.
Musk “Loved” the last message
Steve Jurvetson, Tesla and SpaceX Investor.
On April 29, Jurvetson sends a link to a LinkedIn profile to Musk.
Jurvetson: If you are looking for someone to run the Twitter revamping … perhaps as some kind of CXO under you … Emil Michael is a friend that just offered that idea. Genevieve loved working for him at Klout. He went on to become Chief Business Officer of Uber for 2013-17.
Musk: I don’t have a LinkedIn account
Musk: I don’t think we will have any CXO titles
Jurvetson: OK. Are you looking to hire anyone, or do you plan to run it?
Jurvetson: This is his experience prior to Uber.
Musk: Please send me anyone who actually writes good software
Jurvetson: Ok, no management; good coders, got it.
Musk: Yes
Musk: Twitter is a software company (or should be)=
Jurvetson: Yes. My son at Reddit and some other young people come to mind. I was thinking about who is going to manage the software people (to prioritize and hit deadlines), and I guess that’s you.
Musk: I will oversee software development.
Antonio Gracias, Venture Capitalist and Shareholder of Tesla.
On March 5, a month before Musk as a Twitter shareholder was made official, Gracias wrote to the billionaire.
Gracias: Wow… I saw your tweet re free speech. Wtf is going on Elon…
Musk: EU passed a law banning Russia Today and several other Russian news sources. We have been told to block their IP address.
Musk: Actually, I find their news quite entertaining
Musk: Lot of bullshit, but some good points too
Gracias: This is fucking nuts… you are totally right. ! 100% agree with you.
Gracias: We should allow it precisely bc we hate it… that is the ping of the American constitution.
Musk: Exactly
Musk: Free speech matters most when it’s someone you hate spouting what you think is bullshit
Gracias: I am 100% with you Elon. To the fucking mattresses no matter what … this is a principle we need to fucking defend with our lives or we are lost to the darkness.

5 Medicare Changes Retirees Should Expect In 2023 | Business News | Wfmz.com – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/5-medicare-changes-retirees-should-expect-in-2023-business-news-wfmz-com-69news-wfmz-tv/
Medicare’s annual open enrollment period is just around the corner. Between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7, seniors can make changes to their plans for 2023. But before you dive into the new options, it’s helpful to know about some big changes the government has made to the program for next year. Here are five to keep in mind.
1. Changing start dates for new Medicare recipients
Beginning in 2023, if you sign up in the month you turn 65 or the three months thereafter, your coverage begins on the first day of the following month. This is a change from previous years, when you had to wait up to three months after you signed up for your coverage to start in some cases.
Those who sign up in the three months before their 65th birthday will receive benefits starting in their birth month, unless their birthday is on the first of a month. Then, coverage begins the month before your birthday. For example, if your birthday is May 1, you could sign up as early as January 2023, and if you signed up between January and March, your coverage would begin April 1.
2. New eligibility requirements for Special Enrollment Periods
Starting next year, you could be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period if you miss your Initial Enrollment Period or the Open Enrollment Period for the year due to exceptional circumstances, including:
Being affected by a national disaster or an emergency
Incarceration
Losing Medicaid coverage
3. Coverage for lung cancer screenings
Medicare’s preventive care services will include lung cancer screenings in 2023. But this isn’t open to everyone. You only qualify if you meet the following criteria:
You’re between the ages of 50 and 77.
You don’t have any signs or symptoms of lung cancer.
You’re a current smoker or have quit within the last 15 years.
You have a tobacco smoking history of an average of at least one pack per day for at least 20 years.
You get an order from your doctor.
Those who meet these criteria won’t pay anything out of pocket for this screening.
4. Additional coverage for immunosuppressive drugs
In prior years, Medicare coverage for immunosuppressive drugs following a kidney transplant only lasted for 36 months. Starting in 2023, Medicare will continue to pay for these immunosuppressive drugs beyond 36 months if you have no other health insurance. But there is a premium for this coverage.
Those interested in this service can sign up beginning Oct. 1, 2022. They must do so by Dec. 31, 2022 if they want their coverage to begin on Jan. 1, 2023.
5. Lower Part B premiums and deductibles
The standard Medicare Part B premium will drop to $164.90 in 2023. That’s a decrease of $5.20 per month from 2022. Those with incomes greater than $97,000 will pay more than this, but their 2023 premiums will also be a bit lower than their 2022 premiums.
In addition, the deductible for Part B is also set to decline by $7 per month. It may seem like a small change, but it makes a big difference for seniors who are struggling to pay for basic expenses as well as their healthcare costs.
These changes may not all affect you, but it’s good to keep them in mind. When you choose a new plan, take some time to review all of its coverage options so you understand what you’re signing up for. And review all costs associated with the plan as well so you can plan for them appropriately in your budget.

World Mental Health Day 2022
Introduction: Mental wellness is a lifelong process and a proactive strategy to strengthen our mental, emotional, social, and psychological resources. On one level, mental wellness is about prevention; coping with life’s adversity; and being resilient when we face stress, worry, loneliness, anger, and sadness. Mental wellbeing is an integral part of our overall health. Society often thinks of health as something biological and physical: the condition of our bodies, how healthy we eat, the physical exercise we do. A key component of health is missing from this, though. It’s mental wellbeing, which encompasses our inner workings and the way we describe how we are in our lives. Mental wellbeing, in general, is the state of thriving in various areas of life, such as in relationships, at work, play, and more, despite ups and downs. It’s the knowledge that we are separate from our problems and the belief that we can handle those problems.
Mental Health a Global Priority: Whilst the pandemic has, and continues to, take its toll on our mental health, the ability to reconnect through World Mental Health Day 2022 will provide us with an opportunity to re-kindle our efforts to protect and improve mental health. Many aspects of mental health have been challenged; and already before the pandemic in 2019 an estimated one in eight people globally were living with a mental disorder. At the same time, the services, skills and funding available for mental health remain in short supply, and fall far below what is needed, especially in low and middle income countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis for mental health, fuelling short-and long-term stresses and undermining the mental health of millions. Estimates put the rise in both anxiety and depressive disorders at more than 25% during the first year of the pandemic. At the same time, mental health services have been severely disrupted and the treatment gap for mental health conditions has widened. Growing social and economic inequalities, protracted conflicts, violence and public health emergencies affect whole populations, threatening progress towards improved well-being; a staggering 84 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced during 2021. We must deepen the value and commitment we give to mental health as individuals, communities and governments and match that value with more commitment, engagement and investment by all stakeholders, across all sectors. We must strengthen mental health care so that the full spectrum of mental health needs is met through a community-based network of accessible, affordable and quality services and supports.
Stigma and discrimination continue to be a barrier to social inclusion and access to the right care; importantly, we can all play our part in increasing awareness about which preventive mental health interventions work and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to do that collectively. We envision a world in which mental health is valued, promoted and protected; where everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy mental health and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone can access the mental health care they need.
The nature of Mental Health: After a history of much misunderstanding and stigmatisation of mental ill-health, there is an understandable move to DE stigmatise people who experience mental ill-health whether transient or long term. But this itself has resulted in some confusion. Mental health is too often conceptualised as either entirely organic (eg. genetic, biological or brain chemistry factors contributing to etiology) or entirely social (the result of stressors such as work stress, poverty or discrimination). This is an oversimplification. Social determinants and stressors and organic causes can work together in different ways to bring about or sustain mental health challenges.
Mental health problems play a part in chronic physical conditions (eg Cancer, HIV, heartdisease, diabetes) and in the development of healthy or unhealthy lifestyles. Poor mental health also has an important connection to worklessness. Mental healthproblems which are unresolved can be the cause of people needing to leave work or finding it difficult to get into work, and worklessness itself can bring about depression and other problems. Ensuring good mental health for all across the life course, especially in theworkplace, is good for the economy. There is a large and growing evidence-base demonstrating effective approaches to the promotion of mental health and the prevention of mental illness. More recently, the rise of concepts such as mental wellbeing, resilience and recovery, with increasing bodies of knowledge behind them, have meant that it is time to revise significantly our common views of what mental health is made up of.
Mental Wellbeing and resilience: A relatively new concept of mental wellbeing has been the subject of much research and discussion. It is not just the absence of mental ill-health but is a manifold of both states (which includes happiness/satisfaction) and attributes which may be partly attitudinal and partly skill based. This range of psychological attributes includes confidence, optimism, agency-the ability to look after and manage oneself, and to be able to have and make meaningful choices for oneself and manage ones emotions. Key to well being is resilience- the ability to address and manage stressors and situations which may affect our sense of wellbeing and stay well duringtimes of challenge. Mental Health is therefore best seen as something which comprises a spectrum from healthy to coping to unwell. People may move along that spectrum in both directions across their life.
Good mental wellbeing, not just the absence of mental ill-health or the ability to copewith mental ill-health, is important to healthy and productive lives. Positive psychological functioning including resilience underpins academic achievement ineducation, workplace and personal relationship success and the ability to cope withlife stressors. There is also a very strong link between social isolation and poor mental health. Bullying, victimisation and denying people the value and integrity of the iridentity can all have seriously deleterious impacts on mental wellbeing. Living in good relationship to self, others and (in an ecological perspective of mentalhealth) creation can all be conceptualised as crucial to, and outcomes of, positive mental wellbeing. This is a dynamic, nota static state.
Recovery: Recently, an increasing focus on recovery has developed in mental health services and movements, comprising both clinical recovery (the resolution of symptoms, and their underlying causes where possible and the ability to function well) and personal recovery which can mean anything from living independently to flourishing as muchas possible over the life course, despite knowing that intermittent crises or long termlife with a mental health condition may occur. Recovery signifies the commitment tobe as whole as possible, to adjust to the reality of one’s health and to live meaning fully and hopefully. It is clear that we face a significant set of challenges in our society today. Financial austerity in mental health services, a growing set of stressors across the life course from education through workplace to retirement, the increasing loneliness of many and constant social tensions between various populations mean that a commitment to create the conditions where people and populations can be whole remains a major challenge. For those in mental health systems, the fragmentation of the system may serve to keep people dependent on services rather than support their journey to flourishing.
Conclusion: Our mental health is not, as once believed, a function of purely individual characteristics or ‘character’ in a moral sense; rather it is determined by a whole range of influences almost all of which are out of our control including but not limited to genetics, parenting, schooling, social position, discrimination and so on. It should follow from all of this that a purely individual focused and illness-focused concept of mental health is inadequate given what we now know. This population approach, increasingly being known as Public Mental Health, can be described as Public mental health as “the art and science of improving mental health and wellbeing and preventing mental illness through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private, communities and individuals.”Core to public mental health will be the idea that mental health and mental wellbeing should be at the heart of all we do, and that there can be ‘no health without mental health.
