Cost Of Living: The People Using Solar Panels And Turbines To Reduce Bills – BBC https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/cost-of-living-the-people-using-solar-panels-and-turbines-to-reduce-bills-bbc/ Image caption, Richard Sanders is one of just four permanent residents at the Othona Community By Laurence Cawley BBC News, East At the eastern edge of England, where the River Blackwater meets the North Sea, a small community whose size oscillates with the seasons lives without any connection to the National Grid. The Othona Community at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex has just four permanent residents, including wardens Richard Sanders and his wife, Debbie. Mr Sanders describes the 20-acre (8-hectare) Othona site as a “Christian community that is open to all faiths and none”. “We have a mixture of people who have been coming since the ’50s or ’60s and people coming along for the first time,” he said. “The ethos is worship, study and play, and people here get to meet others that they might not normally come across.” Image caption, As a location off both the electricity and gas grids, the Othona Community is in a tiny minority During the busier summer months, the retreat can have up to 60 people living there. As a location off both the electricity and gas grids, the Othona Community is in a tiny minority. Figures from the energy regulator Ofgem suggest the number of fully off-grid households across the UK could be between just 500 and 2,000. So how is Othona powered? Source: Richard Sanders “We’re right on the edge of nowhere,” Mr Sanders said. “So we’ve just developed from a place with no electricity, to a place with some generators, to a place with a wind turbine and solar panels. “We’ve always been a place where people have to think about their use of resources. In the earlier days we used to have to tell people not to use two hairdryers at once or it would collapse the system. “My feeling is that going on the grid would kill this being the sort of place where you think about energy rather than take it for granted. “Being off-grid is an opportunity for people to think about alternatives and the fact that there are alternatives.” Image caption, There remains one hair dryer at the community – a quirky reminder that not long ago two hairdryers in use at the same time would collapse the retreat’s electrical system The vast, commercial-style kitchen now runs on electricity rather than gas. Not having to pay the current price of gas is a relief to Mr Sanders. “I wouldn’t like to be paying the kinds of prices there are for gas now for the amount we use,” he said. “I mean, we still use the diesel [for the back-up generator] and that’s gone up, but not as much as the gas. “Even the price of the wood pellets that we use for the boiler have gone up – I suspect because people are using that if they can as an alternative to gas.” The centre is hoping to add a second wind turbine capable of 25kw in the near future, meaning they can do away with the back-up generator altogether. And while the centre is connected to the water mains, it also has its own sewage system dating back to the 1980s in which fluid waste is filtered through reed beds and into a pond, which doubles as the centre’s fire hydrant [solid waste is taken away by tanker]. Image caption, The half-tonne (79-stone) hot water tank at the centre gets heated with wood pellets The centre also has a small orchard and a group of hens that lays a handful of eggs daily. “People enjoy what is grown on site – so tomatoes and cucumbers in the summer, and we’ve got a lot of squashes at the moment and a few varieties of potato. “There was, in the 1970s, an attempt to become fully self-sufficient and they had cows, more chickens and a pig and ploughed the fields, but it turned out people were spending more time looking after animals than looking after people, and primarily we are about looking after people.” Image caption, Dr John Packman and his wife Caroline did not originally plan to self-build an eco home About 90 miles (145km) north of Bradwell-on-Sea, Dr John Packman and his wife Caroline live in their self-built home near Southwold in Suffolk. The couple did not set out to self-build an eco home. Rather, their hands were forced by circumstance – in this case, buying a house so rotten and damaged it proved to be unsalvageable. “What I’ve learned from building something new and from scratch is that the fundamentals are so simple, really,” said Dr Packman. “The key thing is orienting the house with the sun,” he said. “We’ve got a big roof on the south side and it is glazed on the south side with a big overhang which helps keep us cool in the summer, but on a winter’s day, when the sun is low, you can get up to 20C (68F) because of the solar gain.” Image caption, Both Dr Packman and Stephen West use a Tesla Powerwall to manage the storage of their solar-powered electricity On the roof of the Packman home are 20 solar panels which, rather than being placed on top of the roof, were installed instead of tiles. Together they produce 4kw of power and feed into a Tesla battery system which, when it senses a coming storm, can fill up on energy from the grid if needed. The couple live in an area overseen by UK Power Networks, which covers London, the East and South East. The energy operator said about 150,000 of its household customers (less than 2% of the total) fed electricity back into the grid, primarily from solar panels. Dr Packman said new builds made it much easier to be more self-sufficient. The floor of the couple’s timber-framed home has been insulated with specially treated recycled paper and the water is heated using an air source heat pump. The toilets of their home are flushed using rainwater harvested from the roof. “Doing stuff with the existing housing stock is difficult,” said Dr Packman. “It is expensive and difficult and needs government initiatives and support.” Image caption, Peter Chisnall, a trustee of environmental charity En-form, said people were wasteful when it came to energy Demand for photovoltaic (PV) panels is rampant, according to Peter Chisnall, a trustee at the Colchester environmental charity En-form. Suffolk County Council is just one of the local authorities that runs a Solar Together scheme, which buys solar panels in bulk for interested residents. “They announced the latest round recently and they had about 7,000 people register, which is phenomenal,” Mr Chisnall said. “People are thinking about this now.” And yet, he said, perhaps the first step towards greater self-sufficiency is not putting up solar panels or harnessing the power of the wind, but simply using less energy in the first place. Image caption, Mr Chisnall said although worthwhile, making existing homes more energy efficient could prove costly and disruptive “The one good thing about the cost of living crisis, perhaps, is that it is making us think about our energy use,” said Mr Chisnall, whose home has a 4kw PV system that has generated about 30,000kwh of energy in the past 10 years. “We are very profligate. “If you think of your energy bills, 80% of what you pay usually is on heating and the other 20% is your lights, your gadgets and all of those other things. “If you want to reduce that as much as you can then you want to look at super insulating your house, reducing thermal bridges and making it as airtight as possible.” An advocate for Passive House standards, which result in ultra-low energy buildings, Mr Chisnall said making existing homes more energy efficient could prove costly and disruptive. For a typical three bedroom semi-detached home, he said, the cost of adding various energy saving measures could cost £25,000 – £30,000. There are various grants available, however, to help meet those costs. “Ideally it should be a whole-house retrofit, even if staged over several years,” he said. “But even if some of the measures can be installed it will help.” Image caption, Stephen West’s 1980s home in Hethersett, Norfolk, has solar panels but he is still reliant on gas Stephen West’s 1980s home in Hethersett, Norfolk, is an example of the type of successful retrofit Mr Chisnall mentions. He installed two sets of solar panels seven years ago and, in 2019, connected the panels to a Tesla Powerwall – a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. “It was about not spending as much money as well as not using as much power from the grid,” he said. “This last year they have paid for themselves, so from now until 2035 it is all profit and that profit increases depending on energy prices.” He has had low-emission windows installed, super-insulated wherever possible, replaced the gas oven with an electric one and bought an electric car. He had wanted an air source heat pump but was told his radiators were too small to work in his home. “It is the practicalities of it because the house is just not designed for it,” he said. “I would love to get off gas. There are systems I could use, but I can’t fit them in.” Image caption, Mr West can monitor the energy production and use within his home via mobile devices The solar panels have saved Mr West about £12,500 during the last seven years. However, he still faces an increase in energy costs. The cost of gas is about to rise from 7p to 10p per kilowatt hour (kWh). And he continues to pay the electricity standing charge despite the fact that during the brighter months he is not using any electricity from the grid. “I would love to start again with a Passive House, I would love to do that.” Photography: Laurence Cawley Find BBC News: East of England on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Crypto News Today – The Fastest Growing Crypto Coins On The Market Today,Fantom, And Big Eyes Coin? – NewsWatch https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/crypto-news-today-the-fastest-growing-crypto-coins-on-the-market-todayfantom-and-big-eyes-coin-newswatch/ The coin market is renowned for the various options that it offers to traders. At any point, traders will have access to thousands of crypto coins. Each of these coins has a different architecture and use case. As a result, they’ll behave differently. That’s why you’ll find the price of some rising faster than others. If you’re a trader interested in making plenty of quick gains for himself, you may buy one of the fastest-growing projects on the market. These projects will fill your bags quickly with profits. So, what are the fastest-growing projects in the coin market? Keep reading to find out. We’ll look at Fantom, and Big Eyes Coin (BIG) for this piece. This Is No Apparition – Fantom As an Ethereum killer, Fantom is expected to be in most crypto discussions worldwide. More people are getting on the Fantom project because they believe it has more intriguing features than other decentralized protocols. As a decentralized protocol, Fandom was designed with the capacity to host decentralized applications. It will support these applications with smart contracts. Because it runs on a proof-of-stake protocol, Fantom can operate flexibly and support transactions seamlessly. Currently, Fantom can support thousands of transactions per second. It can provide seamless transaction finality, and all its transactions are charged at low cost. FTM is the token used to pay transaction fees on this network. All the projects developed on Fantom’s network will enjoy this blockchain’s features. Fantom can process transactions quickly due to a directed acyclic graph and a leaderless consensus. The acyclic graph stores transaction history and maintains a sequence of events. It ensures that all transactions are processed smoothly – one after the other. Furthermore, the leaderless mechanism is an impressive innovation that ensure the blockchain will keep functioning even if there is a glitch. The platform will therefore keep working even during days when other blockchains may be experiencing difficulty. These features have encouraged traders to keep purchasing Fantom, and if this continues, it will remain a fast-riser with plenty of hype. Cat Got The Cream – Big Eyes Coin (BIG) No doubt, Big Eyes has been rising quickly in the coin market. As more attention is given to this meme coin, we can only expect it to keep doing well for itself. While certain experts have referred to Big Eyes as a meme coin that only has hype, the development team for this project strongly begs to differ. They have designed a cryptocurrency that will transfer wealth from the world of cryptocurrencies to users. Early reports indicate that they’re not bluffing. Big Eyes is designed to adopt a community-first approach. This means that the project will prioritize its users. As it stands, users will also be able to contribute to changes and developments on the cryptocurrency. By selling 90% of its tokens during the presale, Big Eyes has kept to its promise. All of its tokens will be available for purchase, and users will benefit more from token growth. In addition, Big Eyes will make a foray into the NFT world. It will serve as a host for NFT projects. Considering the meme coin already has a bright, colorful, and attractive design, interesting things are expected from it in the coin market. There has been plenty of activity in the Big Eyes camp as they do their best to create publicity for their project. Recently, Big Eyes was engaged in a Twitter meme war with Tamadoge. Both coins went at each other, and the exchange gained attention from the crypto community. The Big Eyes presale is currently on and has moved to the second stage. BIG tokens are running out fast. There’s more than 100 billion BIG tokens up for grabs. By joining the Big Eyes bandwagon, you can put your money where your mouth is. To get started, click on the presale link. SpineX Demonstrates Groundbreaking Technology To Treat Children With Cerebral Palsy – The Bakersfield Californian https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/spinex-demonstrates-groundbreaking-technology-to-treat-children-with-cerebral-palsy-the-bakersfield-californian/ LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct 5, 2022– SpineX, Inc., a clinical stage medtech company today announced the groundbreaking results its first in human study in children with cerebral palsy. The study is published in the esteemed medical journal Nature Communications demonstrating unparalleled functional improvements with its proprietary non-surgical treatment SCiP TM ( S pinal C ord I nnovation in P ediatrics) in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). “A pilot study combining noninvasive spinal neuromodulation and activity-based neurorehabilitation therapy in children with cerebral palsy”, led by Dr. Susan Hastings, PT, DPT and Dr. V Reggie Edgerton, PhD is the result of years of work championed by the two stalwarts of their respective fields. This study discusses how delivering non-invasive spinal neuromodulation, using SCiP TM, during Physical Therapy improved voluntary sensorimotor function in 16 out of 16 children over a wide range of ages and severities of CP. SpineX was awarded the Breakthrough Device Designation (BDD) from US FDA for SCiP and the proposed treatment of CP. In addition, SpineX has engaged with FDA to gain alignment on a proposed clinical trial to be conducted in 2023; the results of which are anticipated to lead to FDA clearance of the SCiP TM device for the treatment of CP. This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20221005005002/en/ SCiP therapy for Cerebral Palsy (CP) (Photo: Business Wire) CP is severely debilitating with no current cure. Over 10,000 new cases are diagnosed each year where CP is the result of damage to the developing brain and describes a group of movement disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture. To date there are no methods or medications to prevent or treat CP. Often children with CP are left to be treated with invasive surgeries that attempt to decrease spasticity, a common symptom of the disease. SCiP TM is a non-invasive spinal electrical neuromodulation device which provides transcutaneous spinal cord neuro-stimulation to potentially treat the underlying neurological dysfunction in pediatric patients with CP. SCiP TM aims to be the first medical device in the U.S. to treat CP by transforming the brain and spinal cord dysfunctional connectivity into highly functional systems. “At just three years old and highly affected by CP, our son has shown such exciting progress since he began usingSCiP,” said Dana, the mother of a young boy diagnosed with CP who was enrolled in a clinical study sponsored by SpineX. “We’re so grateful that our son was included in the clinical study with SCiP TMas it has opened up a world of possibilities for our son, and we hope others will be able to witness it soon.” Spinal Neuromodulation is being developed as a platform technology by SpineX and SCiP TM represents their second Breakthrough Device Designation following the SCONE TM device which is in clinical trials for the treatment of Neurogenic Bladder. About SpineX Inc. SpineX Inc. is a clinical stage bioelectric medtech company developing noninvasive neuromodulation devices. SCiP TM by SpineX Inc. is an investigational device being developed to treat CP and is limited by Federal (USA) law to investigational use only. FDA has not yet reviewed the safety or effectiveness of SCiP. SpineX is planning to submit a marketing submission for FDA review and clearance. Commercial Vacancies In NW Counties Fall To 5.8% – Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/commercial-vacancies-in-nw-counties-fall-to-5-8-northwest-arkansas-democrat-gazette/ So much commercial real estate in Benton and Washington counties was snapped up in the first half of this year that the overall vacancy rate plunged to 5.8% from 8.9% in last year’s first half, according to the Skyline Report released Tuesday. The rate fell despite an additional 521,750 square feet of leasable commercial space coming on the market. Nearly 1.76 million square feet was leased in the first six months of 2022. Last year’s first half saw about 1.15 million square feet leased. Mervin Jebaraj, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Arkansas and the report’s lead researcher, said the data show the region’s strength and resilience coming out of the pandemic. The report indicates that Northwest Arkansas companies in many business sectors are experiencing continued growth, Jebaraj said. With many employees returning to work in their offices, new office space is being absorbed as a result of that growth, he said. The Skyline Report, released twice a year, covers the commercial and residential real estate markets in the two-county area. The university’s Center for Business and Economic Research compiles the data for the report, which is sponsored by Arvest Bank. “When you think back to the beginning of the pandemic and the uncertainties it created for commercial real estate, it is good to see the market in Northwest Arkansas remain strong,” said Chris Thornton, executive vice president and commercial loan manager with Arvest Bank in Springdale. In the warehouse market, Tuesday’s report showed a vacancy rate of less than 1%, down from 6.6% last year. That means “there is virtually no leasable warehouse space in the region,” Jebaraj said. That figure supports the idea that e-commerce growth continues to require more warehouse space, Jebaraj said. The region’s retail vacancy fell below 10% for the first time in several years, dropping from 10.8% to 7.9% In the office sector, vacancy dipped to 9.1% from the previous rate of 11.2%. Medical office space was the only sector that saw a vacancy rate increase, growing to 6.6% in 2022’s first half from 4.3% in the first six months of 2021. The value of commercial building permits issued in the two counties totaled $293.7 million, down from $397.9 million in the second half of 2021 and from $647.1 million in the last year’s first half. Most of the permits were issued in Bentonville, which accounted for 64.5% of the total. Springdale issued 18%; Rogers had 9.9%; and Fayetteville issued 3.7%. Nationwide, pressure from rising inflation and geopolitical events has slowed the growth of commercial real estate, according to an October report from the National Association of Realtors. Retail store space in particular has suffered as consumers cut back on spending and net absorption dropped, the association said. Industrial properties have been the leading sector this year, and that shows no sign of stopping, the association said. But even as workers return to the office, the embrace of hybrid work has decreased the demand for office space after four quarters of positive net absorption.

American Express Travel Is Right On Point For Certain Millennial Travelers Skift Travel News
American Express Travel Is Right On Point For Certain Millennial Travelers Skift Travel News
American Express Travel Is Right On Point For Certain Millennial Travelers – Skift Travel News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/american-express-travel-is-right-on-point-for-certain-millennial-travelers-skift-travel-news/ A majority of American Express’ new customers — 60 percent — in the second quarter belonged to the Generation Z and millennial generations, a metric very much noticed at subsidiary American Express Travel. “Their mindset around culturally impactful travel is helping to shape what we do,” Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, told Skift last week. American Express Travel, the leisure travel business that handles cardmembers’ vacations and pleasure trips, became the sixth largest U.S. travel agency in 2021, overtaking Flight Centre and Internova. That ranking is from Travel Weekly’s 2022 Power List, which pegged American Express Travel at $4.9 billion in 2021 sales. This figure was just 71 percent of the travel agency’s 2019 numbers, but parent company American Express reported that in April cardmembers’ total travel and entertainment spending, including for hotels, flights, car rentals and cruises, as well as restaurants and concerts, rose to 108 percent of the 2019 mark. That was the first time travel and entertainment spending through American Express eclipsed pre-pandemic levels. “We have seen the demand for travel rebound faster and stronger than what we expected,” Hendley said. One signal of that rebound is the recovery of the company’s elongated booking windows, which many travel companies saw shrink to a fraction of their pre-pandemic lengths as uncertainty and disruption took their toll. “We’re seeing advanced bookings being very, very strong,” Hendley said. “So one of the measures that I look at is 120-plus days out from today. Versus the same time in 2019, those 120-day-plus bookings are up 40 percent for U.S. card members.” The trip mix has reverted to pre-pandemic levels of 70 percent domestic and 30 percent international, she said, adding, “And that’s kind of back to what we would’ve seen in the past, as travel continues to surge.” American Express Travel and Amex Global Business Travel Many people confuse American Express Travel, the leisure travel agency that’s part of public credit card company American Express, with the larger American Express Global Business Travel ($7.1 billion in 2021 sales), which became a public company in its own right in at the end of May. The two businesses had been part of the same parent company until 2014 when American Express spun out Amex Global Business Travel into a privately held joint venture. The two companies have a tight relationship, and American Express owns 35 percent of Amex Global Business Travel, now formally known as Global Business Travel Group. That stake is down from 40 percent before the business travel company’s stock market debut. Among the tie-ins, American Express licenses its brand to the business travel group, and American Express and the Global Business Travel Group conduct joint negotiations with airlines, hotels and car rental companies to wrangle sometimes-exclusive deals, including private airfares, as well as significant discounts and perks such as late checkouts or hotel upgrades. The Value Proposition Those deals are part of the reason many cardmembers are attracted to American Express Travel, which touts its roughly 100 years in the travel industry, despite some weaknesses (we’ll discuss further below). American Express Platinum cardmembers, according to American Express Travel, “can enjoy exclusive savings on premium class fares on over 20 participating airlines” when booking international trips at AmexTravel.com. Business Platinum cardmembers who book first and business class seats partially or wholly with points through American Express Travel receive 35 percent of these points back, the company said. Luxury lodging benefits from 2,000 hotels around the world include 5x membership rewards points for Platinum cardmembers when they book on AmexTravel.com, and they can pay for these stays with points on that portal, as well. “I book all my travel with Amex,” said Marcus Baldwin, 27, who’s in the tech industry, in a Twitter direct message. “I think the hotel prices are compelling and I like the added perks I get from the hotels program (including Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection). “I also think the peace of mind of dealing with a travel company that knows me based on my card membership. I like being able to use points to pay with travel also.” Baldwin’s one cited disappointment is he would like to see American Express Travel add the ability to book Amtrak tickets. Allen Walton, 34, the founder of FlyGuyTravel and a Richardson, Texas resident, said in a phone call that he booked around half a dozen hotel stays through American Express Travel over the last year, including an upcoming reservation at a Hilton’s Conrad Bangkok in Thailand, and he’s generally found the rates “way better” than booking directly with the hotel or Booking.com, or even compared to group rates in one instance when he was attending an event. Travel Agents and Mix of Booking Channels American Express Travel has around 7,000 travel agents, or travel consultants in company parlance, in 23 countries, and the planning and booking experience can be hybrid. Hendley of American Express Travel said the agency attempts to provide a cross-channel experience so disclosing to this reporter a percentage of online or offline bookings might be misleading, and a “disservice” to each. “So you could go online, and you could start your booking there and then you have something a little bit more complicated or something you want to talk about,” Hendley said. “And you might then say, forget that. I’m going to call you on the phone. You might start on the phone and you might say, you know what? I need to look around and see what other hotels are in the location, and you go back to the online.” Walton, the Texas entrepreneur, said he booked a stay using the American Express Platinum card’s concierge service, but reserved the wrong dates. In trying to modify the booking, he said the customer service was “not great” because the concierge service agent told him she couldn’t cancel an American Express Travel booking, and redirected Walton back to the travel agency’s non-Platinum cardmember customer service. On the other hand, Danielle Nuzzo, 38, a communications professional at Trust & Will in San Diego, California, raved in a Twitter direct message about her experience booking her honeymoon, including using Amex points for the flights, through American Express Travel six years ago. “They had a lot of knowledge of specific hotels and villas to book in Sri Lanka and the Maldives,” Nuzzo said. “They were super helpful on which hotel and even the villa number to book in the Maldives for the best sunset view.” Nuzzo’s American Express travel consultant even came to the rescue with a visa on short notice. “Well one thing that was overlooked was a tourist visa, which was needed for Sri Lanka,” Nuzzo said. “So the day before our flight, while in Dubai, we realized we don’t have a visa but once we contacted our agent she was able to get it sorted out very quickly and we were on the flight the next day. “ Nuzzo said the couple communicated with the American Express Travel agent for the honeymoon trip “mostly by phone and email communication.” “I’m wondering if they have an app now that you could direct-message your agent for quicker responses?,” asked Nuzzo, who counts herself solidly as a millennial. If there are some gripes at times about American Express Travel’s customer service, it should be pointed out that American Express took top honors for customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study for the third year in a row. There Are Millennials and Then There Are Other Millennials Nuzzo’s reference to whether American Express Travel has a mobile app raises the issue of how American Express Travel relates to younger travelers. American Express Travel doesn’t have a dedicated mobile app, and when cardmembers seek to book travel in the American Express app they get pushed to an American Express Travel mobile website. American Express Travel’s Hendley said the company’s customers — and not just the ones who skew younger — seek experiential travel — and during the second quarter 60 percent of American Express’ new customers in the U.S. were Generation Z or millennials. Hendley said American Express Travel found that 81 percent of its customers expressed the sentiment that it was “very important” that they feel like they are contributing to local economies when they travel. “And this is very meaningful to people, and it’s not just what you would think in terms of millennials,” she said. “It’s across the board in terms of what customers want. They want to be in local places, they don’t want the one size fits all.” American Express Travel doesn’t have a great mobile experience, and it doesn’t offer short-term rentals during an era where many people are looking to travel, work, and live in new places beyond hotels. Hendley pointed out that its Fine Hotels + Resorts program offers “a lot of properties that have onsite villas, and properties that have multiple bedrooms and kitchens in different destinations.” If American Express Travel indeed wants to appeal to customers in the current era, after the pandemic reshaped the travel environment, doesn’t it need to offer more vacation rentals at a minimum? Calling it “an interesting trend,” Hendley said the company knows a lot of customers are interested in short-term rentals. “We’re watching the ways people are traveling, and I just want to make sure that if we ever did that, that we made sure that we were innovating and being very differentiated in the marketplace,” Hendley said. It would be easy to envision an American Express Travel ...

James Bond At 60: Britains Bulletproof Cultural Export Is Ripe For Another Rebirth The Guardian
James Bond At 60: Britains Bulletproof Cultural Export Is Ripe For Another Rebirth The Guardian
James Bond At 60: Britain’s Bulletproof Cultural Export Is Ripe For Another Rebirth – The Guardian https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/james-bond-at-60-britains-bulletproof-cultural-export-is-ripe-for-another-rebirth-the-guardian/ It’s the 60th anniversary of James Bond and the right time for all TikTok to be going crazy for “James Bond chord guy” – Jord, or @jrw21 – who’s got 1.4m views and climbing for his hilarious guitar tutorial on how to play the James Bond Chord, E minor with a major 7th and 9th, first used in the soundtrack for the first Bond film, Dr No, which premiered on 5 October 1962. The tense, unresolved chord, says Jord, usually follows Bond saying something cool and then Jord himself demonstrates in a surreally broad Sheffield accent: “Oh Mr Goldfinger, yeah. Come in. We’ve got space for you to have a haircut. Come on, sit down here. Fuckin’ jokin, dickhead. I’m not really a barber. I’ m fuckin’ James Bond. Short back and blow your fuckin’ ’ead off? TWAT!” And then that eerie chord …. Nothing demonstrates the phenomenal survival potency of the canonical 007 movie brand over 60 years, like that viral video. Somehow secret agent Bond, that preposterous dinner-jacketed imperial throwback, has persisted into 21st century popular culture as the exemplar of nonchalant alpha-maleness, evolving in such a way as to absorb and assimilate all the irony and objection that has been thrown his way. It is the most bulletproof action franchise of all, whose basic unitary identity has carried on for six decades. Like Doctor Who, Bond has survived by regenerating – from Connery to Lazenby to Moore to Dalton to Brosnan to Craig – but Doctor Who doesn’t have the continuity or international recognition (or not quite). Like Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, 007 is an addictive returning persona, but those legendary sleuths, however feted in the cinema, never had 007’s single movie marketplace dominance. Forgiven by the Beatles … Sean Connery in Goldfinger. Photograph: United Artists/Allstar Harry Potter had a staggering run in tandem with the books’ appearance: but Daniel Radcliffe has now grown up. Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible movies and his Top Gun revival are colossal box office hits but even the Cruise can’t last for ever. Yet Bond carries on, apparently endlessly rebooting. But now, after the great apocalyptic ending of No Time to Die, the new Bond has to be finessed or retconned somehow. They must choose a new pope of luxury watch wearing and sexual banter from the various cardinals now assembling in Vatican City of Eon’s offices in London’s Piccadilly: Tom Hardy? Regé-Jean Page? Tom Hiddleston? Idris Elba? We do know that Eon are not looking for someone in their 20s. Gen Z is out. Brooklyn Beckham need not apply. James Bond’s appearance in the cinema was and continues to be a cash cow for Eon productions (now bought out, with MGM, by Amazon) and a global cultural phenomenon. It was a consolatory declinist fantasy for Britons, essentially the second world war action man of Ian Fleming’s conception in the books whose derring-do is cleverly presented as “secret” in a postwar world where Old England doesn’t count for as much. And yet, when Dr No was released in cinemas in 1962, Britain still had quite a few imperial possessions, including Hong Kong, Grenada, Kenya, Malawi and Qatar. And Sean Connery’s Bond became the standard bearer for that new detumescent paradox of British prestige: soft power. Bond was a great ambassador for British style, British class. And throughout the Connery-Lazenby-Moore years, international air travel and consumer gadgets were still not commonplace, at least not for the pennypinched, IMF-humiliated Brits who lapped it all up, and so Bond was a delicious Walter Mitty reverie which floated on to the present. 007 … Lashana Lynch in No Time to Die. Photograph: MGM/Nicola Dove/Allstar Soft power was the thing. And the irony was that this essentially conservative establishment figure became Britain’s soft power standard-bearer into the 1960s and beyond alongside those long-haired caterwauling non-establishment layabouts that Bond detested: British pop stars. In Goldfinger, Bond declares that drinking Dom Perignon ’53 above the temperature of 38 degrees fahrenheit is as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs. That was a stuffy and pompous thing for Bond to say, but The Beatles really forgave him: Paul McCartney wrote one of the great Bond themes with Live and Let Die and Ringo Starr married Barbara Bach, who was, in the toe-curlingly sexist language of the time, a “Bond girl”. And so Bond carried on; through the eras of Reagan-Thatcher, the fragile special relationship, 9/11, the “war on terror”, the 2012 London Olympics (in which Daniel Craig’s Bond co-starred with the Queen) and now the Brexit retreat into Fortress Britain, he somehow aligned himself with the exo-skeletal inhumanity of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator and the wised-up ordinariness of Matt Damon’s Bourne, slightly modifying his style to accommodate these eddies in fashion. And in the last Bond movie, No Time to Die, in which the 007 title is given to a new agent, stylishly played by Lashana Lynch, there is even some mockery of Bond’s obsolete attitudes, his ageing and his dodgy knee. Modified style … Daniel Craig in No Time to Die. Photograph: MGM/Universal Pictures/Eon/Danjaq/Nicola Dove/Allstar Will the new Bond send himself up? I don’t think so. When Danny Boyle was hired to direct No Time to Die, he reportedly got himself fired from the project because he and writer John Hodge wanted to re-imagine the script and chuck some new ingredients into the Coca-Cola formula. Eon chiefs Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson balked. The point is that the audience and the pundits can do the re-imagining and the ironising but Bond himself plays it straight, with a few teases and quirks. I have myself been one of those (many) people asking Eon if they might refresh the Bond brand by going back to basics or pre-basics and dramatise the original non-gadget Bond from the 1950s Ian Fleming novels. Well, the movies need the luxury and the glamour so that won’t fly, not even in a streaming TV series. But what about a prequel series imagining the dashing young M’s own adventures at the end of the war and then in rationing-hit London? That would leave the central icon untouched. Either way, Bond’s tux will probably come back from the dry cleaners good as new or thereabouts.

Italy Has A Registry Of 73 Unvetted Crypto Firms CoinDesk
Italy Has A Registry Of 73 Unvetted Crypto Firms CoinDesk
Italy Has A Registry Of 73 Unvetted Crypto Firms – CoinDesk https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/italy-has-a-registry-of-73-unvetted-crypto-firms-coindesk/ ROME — Italy may be rubber-stamping crypto firms’ applications to operate in the country without running proper checks to make sure they are safe for investors. This summer, a string of prominent crypto firms – including Coinbase, Binance and Crypto.com – announced they had secured regulatory approval to continue operating in Italy. In effect, the companies were entered into a registry set up to ensure companies were compliant with the country’s anti-money laundering standards. The Organismo Agenti e Mediatori (OAM), a supervisory body in Italy that maintains lists of financial agents like credit mediators and money changers operating in the country, has indeed been busy. While regulators are usually criticized by the industry for delays in processing applications, Italy’s OAM has quickly added 73 crypto firms – including the ones listed above – to its new roster for virtual currency service providers, which only opened in May. When Coinbase was added to the OAM register in July, the firm said it reached “a key milestone” in the journey to serving European customers, adding that it had secured “approval from Italian regulators to provide ongoing crypto services to its residents.” Similar statements were issued by Binance and Crypto.com. Obtaining regulatory approval or qualifying for registration with a local regulator tells investors that a company has been scrutinized by relevant authorities in the country. But in Italy, the “regulatory approval” alluded to in these statements may not carry the weight of assurance it implies. Although registration with the OAM is now mandatory to continue operating in the country, no company was vetted before being added to the list. The OAM has confirmed to CoinDesk that it is still deciding on how to collect the relevant data from companies – and that it probably won’t start collecting information until next year. This means that Italy’s supervisory authorities are not currently monitoring the fund flows or controls in place to prevent criminals or bad actors from using these platforms to move money. “Italy is probably, as far as I’m aware of, the jurisdiction with the most simple process. It’s just a registration,” said Francesco Dagnino, managing partner at Lexia Avvocati, a Milan-based law firm that has handled the applications for around 16 out of the 72 firms on the OAM list. The Italian registration process is “very light” compared to other jurisdictions in the European Union, and does not require compliance with any particular requirements – like operational integrity or anti-money laundering (AML) standards – for the purpose of the registration, Dagnino said. For comparison, France’s Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) requires companies to present four different forms detailing operations, executive management, significant shareholders and internal AML controls to earn a spot in the country’s equivalent crypto registry. Some global platforms like Binance and Crypto.com have also qualified for registration with the AMF as well. Bitcoin, which came with a manifesto that promised to disrupt traditional finance back in 2009, may have predicted a crypto industry which prided itself in preserving privacy and evading the influence or interactions with the institutions and regulators that paved the way for the 2008 economic crisis. But the industry has come a long way, growing from niche networks to a multi-billion dollar global market. As the crypto world ballooned, inviting more members of the general population into its complex folds, centralized trading exchanges began flaunting “regulatory approval” as a badge of honor – signaling to investors that these companies are safe and that they abide by anti-money laundering or investor-protection standards set forth by the jurisdictions they operate in. In the dead of the coldest crypto winter on record, when some of the industry’s top players came crashing down along with market prices, the news of a regulator greenlighting a crypto platform seemed to carry even more weight than usual. When sports token issuer Socios said Italian regulators had approved it after the firm was added to the OAM list, football fan tokens rallied in the days that followed. In its most recent evaluation, global AML standard setter, the Financial Action Task Force, said Italy’s current measures to counter money laundering are “extensive and mature” but “more effort needs to be devoted by supervisory authorities to ensure the legal framework is effectively implemented by reporting entities.” In February, Italy implemented its new anti-money laundering rules for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) operating in the country. The decree from the Ministry of Economics and Finance mandated the creation of a special roster for crypto firms. Once OAM opened the roster in May, all crypto firms already operating in the country and those that wished to enter the market had to apply for registration. VASPs that were already offering services to Italians were required to apply to be added to the registry by July 15. Once an application is submitted, the OAM has to approve or deny entry into the roster in 15 days. The application requires the submission of 10 pieces of information which include the company name, a tax or fiscal code (easily obtained at an office of the country’s revenue agency), an email address, any physical points of operation including ATMs and a web address. Most importantly, to qualify for the registry, the applicant must also provide a “registered office and, if different from the registered office, the administrative office.” If the VASP’s office is in another EU member state, a “permanent establishment” has to be set up in the Italian territory. Put simply, an operational office or physical point in Italy is a requirement to qualify for the registry, the OAM told CoinDesk in a written statement. That doesn’t mean companies are actually setting up shop in Italy though. Binance, for instance, has an address in the southern Italian province of Lecce, the register shows, under the entity name Binance Italy LLC. However, the company doesn’t have big plans for the office. “We plan to open offices in Italy soon and are looking at options across Italy. The office in Lecce is only a formal step and, most likely, will not be the administrative office,” Simon Matthews, public relations director at Binance in Europe said in an email to CoinDesk. Both Crypto.com and Coinbase have listed the same local address in the OAM registry as Stradello Marche 6, 43121 in the Italian city of Parma. A spokesperson for Coinbase told CoinDesk that the company does not have a “physical presence in Italy” and the address belongs to the company’s accountant. Spokespeople for Crypto.com did not respond to a request for comment. Both companies have a “permanent establishment” in Italy, so they are compliant with registration requirements, OAM told CoinDesk. A place in the OAM registry is a promise that the company will be scrutinized by regulators in the future to make sure they comply with local AML requirements. The operators registered in the roster are “legally recognized as legitimate services in Italy” according to the OAM, which added that it plans to start collecting “customer data” and information on “operations carried out” from the companies in the coming months. “It’s not that you literally get a license. It does not mean that you pass some particular scrutiny from the regulators,” Dagnino said. Another big name on the list is Austria-based cryptocurrency exchange Bitpanda, which began operations in Italy in 2021. “It should be remembered that registration as a VASP with the OAM is not the end of the process, but only a first step,” said Martin Erhold, public policy lead at Bitpanda in an email to CoinDesk. “All VASPs will now be directly scrutinized for compliance with applicable AML rules and will need to demonstrate their setups are effective.” Bitpanda was one of the companies that were operating in Italy well before the opening of the register. “We already had a local branch and team, in Milan… a prerequisite for us to operate appropriately in the market, so we were already subject to Italian laws, including local tax law,” Erhold said. Binance declined to comment on tax implications. Erhold described the OAM registration as a “simple and smooth” process, but said not all companies have followed Bitpanda’s path. “Today we see that only a few leading players have registered and do not have a clear intention to localize operations in the Italian market,” Erhold said. He did not name any leading players.

Reporters Notebook: The Truman Show At The Capitol Yahoo News
Reporters Notebook: The Truman Show At The Capitol Yahoo News
Reporter’s Notebook: The Truman Show At The Capitol – Yahoo News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/reporters-notebook-the-truman-show-at-the-capitol-yahoo-news/ It’s well known that Vice President Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. But what few Americans know is that President Harry Truman also took out Hamilton. Hamilton wasn’t laid low in a duel. But congressional officials recently moved Hamilton’s statue out of the Capitol rotunda in exchange for a statue of the 33rd president. Hamilton’s statue is now exiled to the Capitol’s “Hall of Columns,” a lengthy, ornate corridor on the first floor of the House wing. Compared to the rotunda, the Hall of Columns is not exactly “the room where it happens.” WATCH: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF HARRY S. TRUMAN In the Hall of Columns, Hamilton’s company isn’t quite elite as the roster of presidents which line the rotunda. Hamilton’s now in congressional steerage with a statue of Sen. Jacob Collamer of Vermont. Collamer was a prominent member of the Whig party and served as U.S. postmaster general. Nearby is a statue of Sen. John Kenna, D-W.V., who served in the Confederate Army. Finally, there’s a depiction of John Gorrie of Florida. Gorrie’s claim to fame is that he received a patent for a machine to make ice. That’s one way to give Hamilton the cold shoulder. Alexander Hamilton enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit. But, as they sing in the musical, “Oceans rise. Empires fall.” And even Hamilton’s recent surge in popularity was no match when up against Truman and a coveted spot in the Capitol rotunda. It’s location, location, location — just like in real estate. Most spaces in the Capitol rotunda are reserved for presidents. George Washington. Thomas Jefferson. Abraham Lincoln. Andrew Jackson. Ulysses S. Grant. James Garfield. Dwight Eisenhower. Gerald Ford. Ronald Reagan. There are two exceptions. There’s a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. and a massive sculpture titled the “Portrait to Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.” It’s an homage to women’s suffrage. But other than those figures, only the statues of presidents now stand in the rotunda. And as King George III proclaimed in Hamilton about other American presidents, “Next to Washington, they all look small.” Politics dictates there’s no way they would remove King nor the women’s monument. So they dismissed Hamilton. Each of the 50 states get to choose two statues to represent them in the Capitol collection. Missouri’s legislature selected Truman as its statue, dispensing with an 1899 statue of late Sen. Thomas Hart Benton, D-Mo. Known as “Old Bullion,” Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851. But the senator wasn’t even as famous as the painter who bore the same name. Like many statues officials have replaced in the Capitol in recent years, history passed Benton by. Benton also defended slavery. So it’s no surprise that the Show Me State showed Benton the door and opted for Truman. Benton’s statue never stood in the Capitol rotunda. His depiction resided in Statuary Hall, the old House chamber. So they traded Benton for Truman and Hamilton for Truman. As they say in Major League Baseball, Hamilton was “designated for assignment.” And — click, boom — Hamilton was demoted from the Capitol rotunda to the Hall of Columns. Down in the Hall of Columns, Hamilton’s edifice now stands next to a sculpture of late Sen. Pat McCarran, D-Nev. McCarran was a key figure in the creation of the U.S. Air Force. The airport in Las Vegas was named after McCarran until recently. Nevada officials renamed the airport after late Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. McCarran co-authored the famous “McCarran-Ferguson Act.” The law created a carve out for insurance firms from federal regulations. But McCarran was also a notorious racist. There’s been chatter for years about swapping out McCarran’s statue. Despite his downgrade, the 1868 statue of Hamilton might tell you he’s not “throwing away my shot,” much like the title character in the play. LONG-MISSING ALEXANDER HAMILTON LETTER PUT ON PUBLIC DISPLAY Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., hinted he’d like to see Hamilton back in the rotunda. The New York Democrat conferred with Senate Rules Committee Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., about the decision to switch out Hamilton for Truman. The Senate Rules Committee is one panel in charge of placement of statues in the Capitol. There’s a line in the musical that is prophetic about Hamilton and the other Founding Fathers. It speaks to Hamilton’s relegation on Capitol Hill. “You have no control. Who lives who dies. Who tells your story,” the chorus sings. The hagiography of Washington, Jefferson and James Madison overshadowed Hamilton — especially since Aaron Burr cut his life short in the duel. Despite his presence on the $10 bill, Hamilton was banished to the back pages of U.S. history until Ron Chernow authored his biography in 2004. Miranda magnified Hamilton’s legacy from there with his Tony-winning musical in 2015. But Hamilton’s most prominent place in the American political experience was at the very center of the American political experience: the Capitol rotunda. Until now. Truman’s status as president certainly makes him worthy of his spot in the rotunda. Truman may be more connected to the Capitol than some of his colleagues. He served a decade in the Senate and — as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s vice president — was president of the Senate. In fact, Truman went from the Senate to vice president to president in fewer than three months after FDR died. Vice presidents frequently presided over daily Senate sessions back in those days. Truman spent much of April 12, 1945 monitoring a Senate debate over a water treaty with Mexico. Toward the end of the afternoon, Truman wandered to a special hideaway office in the Capitol used by House Speaker Sam Rayburn, D-Tex. Rayburn often invited fellow lawmakers to join him in what was called the “Board of Education.” They’d discuss legislation over libations. Truman was Rayburn’s guest on that day. But White House press secretary Steve Early interrupted their branch water and bourbon with an urgent phone call, asking Truman to return to the White House as quickly as possible. Truman didn’t know why at the time. FDR had died and Truman was minutes away from becoming president. TEXAS CHURCH TO PAY DAMAGES FOR UNAUTHORIZED ‘HAMILTON’ PRODUCTION THAT ADDED RELIGIOUS THEMES Truman excused himself from the conclave with Rayburn and darted back across the building from the House wing to the vice president’s office on the Senate side of the Capitol. Truman had to collect his hat before he could leave. It was rare in the 1940s to see a man outside without his hat. Ironically, en route to the Senate wing of the Capitol, Truman raced through the Hall of Columns and the very spot where Hamilton’s statue stands today. Truman’s oldest grandson, Clifton Truman Daniel, spoke at the ceremony dedicating the statue of his grandfather in the rotunda. “Do your duty and history will do you justice,” Daniel said. It’s unclear if Hamilton’s downgrade to the Hall of Columns is permanent. But Hamilton may take solace in a line sung by King George III in the musical. “You’ll be back. Soon you’ll see,” King George sang.

TSET Launches New Secondhand Smoke Campaigns | News | Tahlequahdailypress.com – Tahlequah Daily Press https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/tset-launches-new-secondhand-smoke-campaigns-news-tahlequahdailypress-com-tahlequah-daily-press/ The Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust’s “Tobacco Stops With Me” program kicked off Sept. 19 with two new statewide campaigns focused on the effects of secondhand smoke on Oklahomans. Sarah Carson, TSET public information specialist, said the campaigns are called “It’s Like They’re Smoking” and “Balloons” and mainly concentrate on the dangers of secondhand smoke to children and youth. “We are focused on how when they are exposed to secondhand smoke, it is just like they themselves are smoking. In fact, being exposed to 30 minutes of secondhand smoke is like having smoked yourself,” said Carson. She said 200,000 children in Oklahoma are exposed to secondhand smoke in their homes. Carson said she thinks it is important for the campaign to cover secondhand smoke, as it has a lot of the same effects for children as it does for adults. The campaigns are directed mainly at secondhand smoke from cigarettes, but they do touch on the implications of secondhand vaping. While no events are scheduled for the campaigns, there is related material on TV broadcasts, websites, and social media platforms. “We hope to create more awareness for the realities of secondhand smoke and the seriousness of the issue and to also educate Oklahomans on why comprehensive smoke-free laws throughout the state are important,” said Carson. Lora Buechele, Cherokee County program coordinator for the TSET Healthy Living Program, said she thinks secondhand smoke is still an issue in today’s climate. “Secondhand smoke is an issue because tobacco smoke is an issue,” said Buechele. She said from a local level she hopes the campaigns will cause more people to notice how smoking in public places can impact others, especially children or people with health concerns, such as asthma. “I think that secondhand smoke is still very prevalent today. Even though we see a decline in adult smoking rates, we still have a lot of youth across the state and in Cherokee County who are exposed to secondhand smoke and it’s so dangerous,” said Buechele. Charlie Gagen, American Lung Association advocacy director for Oklahoma and Texas, said secondhand smoke can be defined as the smoke that comes from burning tobacco products as well as smoke that has been exhaled. “It is a serious health hazard. In fact, it causes more than 41,000 deaths per year in the United States,” said Gagen. “Additionally, it can cause or make worse a wide range of health effects in children and adults, including lung cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma. Even a relatively brief exposure to secondhand smoke could trigger a heart attack, according to some studies.” Gagen said due to children’s bodies constantly growing this causes them to be more vulnerable to health issues from secondhand smoking. For example, he said babies who are exposed to the substance are more likely to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, exposure to fetuses and babies can cause them to have weaker lungs, and children who are exposed are often more sick with bronchitis, pneumonia, and ear infections. Gagen said it doesn’t matter where secondhand smoke comes from, but in places such as indoor areas the smoke can linger longer. Sonya Davidson, a preventionist with Tahlequah BEST Community Coalition, said she thinks smoking is mainly prevalent in outdoor settings due to laws against smoking inside. “I don’t think a lot of people really think about it or realize what it entails because the smoker themselves make that choice to use a nicotine product on their own, but those who are exposed to secondhand smoke from that product also suffer consequences from a decision that might not be one of their own,” said Davidson.

Jourdan Makes Her Mark On Fitch Program | News, Sports, Jobs – Youngstown Vindicator https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/jourdan-makes-her-mark-on-fitch-program-news-sports-jobs-youngstown-vindicator/ Correspondent file photo / Robert Hayes Austintown Fitch senior Jocelyn Jourdan goes up for a kill earlier this season against Girard. AUSTINTOWN — Jocelyn Jourdan has come a long way in a short period of time. The Austintown Fitch senior had never played volleyball until she tried out for the team in seventh grade. At the time, Jourdan was running cross country, but she said she wasn’t doing well, so she gave volleyball a try. “I remember working with her as a middle (hitter) and just trying to teach her, don’t hit straight ahead, hit those corners,” Falcons head coach Jody Bartlett said while remembering working with Jourdan when she first started club volleyball. Now, Jourdan’s name is forever inscribed in the record books at Austintown Fitch High School. During a 3-1 win against Canfield last week, Jourdan became the first athlete in school history to reach 1,000 total kills for her career. She now owns the Falcons’ school records for most kills in a game, season and career. “It means so much to me because that’s been the goal since my freshman year,” Jourdan said. “I remember during my freshman and sophomore year, I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get it. So it just felt so good to have all my hard work pay off. In that moment, it was such a relief.” Heading into the match against the Cardinals, Jourdan was just 23 kills away from the 1,000 mark. Knowing how close she was, she went all out from the very start. Any chance Jourdan had, she looked to put the ball away, determined to incher closer and closer to that historic milestone. “Every ball, I was just trying to hit as hard as I could,” Jourdan said. “Every single set, I was thinking — I’m putting this ball away, I’m putting this ball away. I knew I had to get it, everyone was depending on me. All of my family was there for me and everyone is here cheering me on, so I was just so focused on my game.” When she finally did it, with a kill from the left side of the net to the far left corner of the court, just like Barlett had taught her in seventh grade club volleyball, she raised her arms in celebration and embraced with her teammates on the floor. Those in the crowd held up placards with the number “1,000” on it, and the match briefly paused as she shared a moment with Bartlett on the Falcons bench and her family just off the court. “When we knew that she only needed one more, every time it didn’t happen, everybody would take a breath,” Bartlett said. “Of course, she wanted it to come on a really good (kill), which it did. My freshman coach did a great job of getting everyone involved, and a lot of the parents and grandparents had a lot of things ready to celebrate in that moment, so it was awesome.” It’s common for high school volleyball players to reach such milestones as 1,000 assists or 1,000 digs, but a player achieving 1,000 kills is both difficult and rare, according to Bartlett, especially considering that Jourdan spent her first two years of high school volleyball as a middle hitter before moving to outside hitter the last two seasons. “Your middle hitters don’t get as many sets as the outside, they just don’t,” Bartlett said. “When you look at where the ball’s naturally going to go, it goes outside the majority of the time. So for her to be able to maintain and get as many kills as she did in that middle position, she’s done such a great job and it’s not an easy feat.” Freshman setter Rylie Simons is a big part of why Jourdan has been able to continue to put up the numbers she has this season. “You have to credit (Jourdan’s) setter, especially her setters in the past have all done a great job,” Bartlett said. “Riley stepping in as a freshman — she already has over 500 assists.” After setting the school record for most kills in a season last year with 405 (previous record was 343), Jourdan currently has 313 kills this season and looks poised to break her own record — should she keep her current pace of 5.7 kills per set, with six matches remaining in the Falcons’ regular season, plus however far they go in the playoffs. “In the past, we’ve definitely had some really strong hitters, but I don’t know that the consistency was there like it is with Jocelyn,” Bartlett said. “I think she’s been by far my most consistent and has carried the highest hitting percentage (0.322) than any of the hitters I’ve worked with in the past.” When Bartlett took over the Falcons as head coach several years ago, she said the culture of the program wasn’t where she wanted it to be. But, she says it is now and credits players like Jourdan for being able to help her build that culture. “It means everything, especially with these younger kids being able to come in and look up to her,” Bartlett said. “Girls like her, they come in and lead by example and they’re so positive to the (other) girls, the underclassmen. I think that really makes a difference when you have kids coming up through the program.” Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Stuntfest World Tour Has A Steam Next Fest Demo Available Now – Gamer Matters https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/stuntfest-world-tour-has-a-steam-next-fest-demo-available-now-gamer-matters/ Stuntfest World Tour, the game show game involving cars, stunts and other wacky props, is currently hosting a demo as part of Steam Next Fest. The demo will be available throughout Steam Next Fest, letting you sample the multiplayer battle royale game (think Fall Guys but with cars and jetpacks) where you sometimes race cars, sometimes smash other cars, and sometimes smash your driver out of the windscreen, ejected from the car, to be flung further up ahead and summon back into a new car. There are 4 cars, 5 characters and 12 different “tracks” (we prefer the term “rounds” as not all of them are racing tracks) available in the demo. The demo includes a tutorial, and then lets you matchmake into the 18-player multiplayer match. You can download the Stuntfest World Tour Steam Next Fest demo on Steam. Stuntfest has the potential to be a good time, but the demo is still a bit rough as we detail in our impressions here. But if you’re curious, it’s worth checking out and try for yourselves. Stuntfest has no release date yet, and is so far only confirmed for the PC via Steam.

SEC Chair Gensler Insists Most Crypto Tokens Are Securities Says the Law Is Clear Regulation Bitcoin News Bitcoin News
SEC Chair Gensler Insists Most Crypto Tokens Are Securities — Says ‘the Law Is Clear’ – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/sec-chair-gensler-insists-most-crypto-tokens-are-securities-says-the-law-is-clear-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ The chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Gary Gensler, has reiterated that most crypto tokens are securities, emphasizing that “the law is clear on this.” However, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has asked Congress for authority over crypto spot markets and several bills have been introduced in Congress this year to provide the CFTC with the necessary authority. SEC Chairman Gary Gensler on Crypto Regulation The issue of which federal agency should regulate the crypto market has gained much attention recently. While the chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Gary Gensler, has said that the majority of crypto tokens are securities and should fall under the purview of his agency, many people and lawmakers believe that it should be the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) that regulates the crypto sector. Moreover, three bills have been introduced in Congress this year to make the CFTC the regulator of the crypto markets. In an interview with CNBC Monday, Gensler responded to a question about who should regulate the crypto sector. The SEC chief explained: Our agency is an agency that oversees this basic bargain. When a group of entrepreneurs is raising money from the public and the public is anticipating a profit, they need disclosure — full, fair, and truthful disclosure, and that’s the core bargain in our capital markets. The SEC chairman continued: “You get to take the risk but the person raising money or the persons raising money has to disclose various information to you. That’s how our capital markets work best, and the SEC is very good at this and that’s what we do.” He emphasized: The law is clear on this. I believe based on the facts and circumstances, most of these tokens are securities. On Monday, at the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) meeting, presided by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Gensler reiterated: “Of the nearly 10,000 tokens in the crypto market, I believe the vast majority are securities. Offers and sales of these crypto security tokens are covered by the securities laws. Given that most crypto tokens are securities, it follows that many crypto intermediaries are transacting in securities and have to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission in some capacity.” Regarding the SEC collaborating with the CFTC, Gensler stressed: To the extent that crypto intermediaries may need to one day register with both the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), I would note we currently have dual registrants in the broker-dealer space and in the fund advisory space. Meanwhile, the CFTC has asked Congress for authority over the crypto cash market. CFTC Chairman Rostin Behnam explained last week that since the CFTC is a derivatives regulator, it does not currently oversee cash markets. Therefore, he has asked Congress for “cash authorities, so that we can go in the bitcoin cash market, the ether cash market, and the other digital commodity token [markets],” the CFTC chief explained last week. He also said that the SEC and CFTC will have to “figure that out legislatively” because crypto is a new asset class. “There are different components and characteristics of this asset class as opposed to traditional asset classes,” Behnam said, adding: “We have to rely on 70-year-old case law to determine what’s a security, what’s a commodity.” Who do you think should regulate the crypto market, the SEC or the CFTC? Border Patrol Agent Fatally Shoots Migrant In U.S. Custody – The Washington Post https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/border-patrol-agent-fatally-shoots-migrant-in-u-s-custody-the-washington-post/ The FBI is investigating the fatal shooting of a man in U.S. custody Tuesday inside a Border Patrol station near El Paso, according to the bureau and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Jeffrey R. Downey, the FBI special agent in charge in El Paso, said the bureau responded Tuesday afternoon to a shooting involving a Border Patrol agent and “a person detained” at the Ysleta Border Patrol Station. “One person was taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment,” Downey said in a statement. “At this time, the FBI can confirm the person has died from his injuries.” Neither the FBI nor CBP provided information about the man’s nationality or the circumstances of the shooting. CBP said the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility is also reviewing the incident, and El Paso Police Department officers responded to the scene. “Additional information will be shared when it becomes available,” CBP said in a statement confirming the man’s death. As of Sept. 14, CBP had recorded 17 use-of-force incidents by agency personnel using their firearms during the government’s 2022 fiscal year, according to the agency’s most recent statistics. There were 15 such incidents in 2021. In February, a Border Patrol agent fatally shot a Mexican man, 32-year-old Carmelo Cruz Marcos, in a remote Arizona canyon near the Mexican border. Prosecutors who reviewed the case declined to bring charges against the agent, saying he acted in self-defense. Border Patrol stations are secure facilities used to process and detain migrants who are taken into custody after entering the United States illegally. Agents staffing the facilities typically carry their firearms at all times.

5 Big Takeaways From India Mobile Congress 2022 | Technology News The Indian Express
5 Big Takeaways From India Mobile Congress 2022 | Technology News The Indian Express
5 Big Takeaways From India Mobile Congress 2022 | Technology News – The Indian Express https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/5-big-takeaways-from-india-mobile-congress-2022-technology-news-the-indian-express/ This year’s India Mobile Congress (MWC) in New Delhi was defined by 5G. (Image credit: Anuj Bhatia/Indian Express) The last time I visited India Mobile Congress was in 2019, way before the pandemic, and everywhere there was a buzz about 5G spectrum auctions expected to happen that year. Ericsson and Qualcomm completed the first ever live 5G video call in India and mobile brands had just started offering 5G smartphones. Fast forward to 2022, and nothing much has changed on the ground even as this edition of the forum has triggered the rollout of 5G services in India. Operators like Airtel and Jio have announced the first cities to get the services and 5G handsets are now available for as low as Rs 10,000. Here are my big takeaways from the India Mobile Congress 2022. 5G was everywhere The moment you enter Pragati Maidan Convention Center in New Delhi banners with 5G branding greeted you everywhere. For the last few years, 5G has been the main theme at IMC. It started as a vision, then turned into a promise, and this year 5G networks have begun rolling out services. Much of the show revolved around 5G and how it could impact your life in a positive way. There was a clear emphasis by telecom operators and hardware makers to establish the narrative that “5G” is more than the tech buzz it has been so far. As Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani said in his speech at IMC: “5G is much more than the next generation of connectivity technology. In fact, I think of 5G as an acronym for “5 Goals” that fundamentally can transform our nation.” Telecom companies, despite being burdened by debt, are betting on fifth-generation wireless standards to keep up with the growing demand for streaming content and mobile games by customers. The intention is to increase revenue streams and bring more users to their platforms. But operators are also aware that 5G will only penetrate a massive country like India when there is an ecosystem to unlock the full potential of the next-generation wireless technology. Jio will be launching 5G network services in four cities this Dussehra – Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Varanasi. (Image credit: Anuj Bhatia/Indian Express) No word on 5G tariff plans I was hoping to get a rough idea about how much users have to pay to get 5G services on their phones but was left disappointed when nothing was announced at the India Mobile Congress. None of the three big telecom operators in India — Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea — gave any indication on pricing. All we got to hear from Mukesh Ambani is that his company plans to offer 5G services “more affordable than anywhere else in the world”. Experts say initially customers will need to pay a premium to get faster speed on their phones and only when 5G will become mainstream, tariffs will match what users are currently paying for 4G. I expect both Reliance Jio and Airtel to announce 5G tariff plans around Diwali. The rollout of fifth-generation wireless networks known as 5G has kicked off in India. (Image credit: Anuj Bhatia/Indian Express) Focus on India-specific 5G use cases From connected mobile ambulances to a cattle tracker, India-specific use cases of 5G were the talk of the town at IMC. The use of 5G in solving real-life problems like remote surgery could be a lifesaver. But use cases of 5G like these have been demonstrated previously as well. I, particularly, got excited when I saw the live demonstration of cloud gaming and how it could make game consoles less relevant in future. The fact that I could play AAA games on a smartphone would be huge. Of course, cloud gaming calls for a fast and stable internet connection. I am reasonably confident once 5G services start rolling out in India we will see an uptick in this segment. For major cloud gaming services like Microsoft Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming and Nvidia  GeForce Now, India could be the next big market to pay attention to. Jio showcased the JioGlass (left) and JioBook (right) at IMC 2022. (Image credit: Anuj Bhatia/Indian Express) JioGlass and JioBook Surprisingly, no company chose to launch new 5G smartphones at IMC though Jio gave a sneak preview of the upcoming JioBook and JioGlass. Both are different products aimed at different users, with the JioBook being targeted at school students. While the JioBook is a low-cost 4G-enabled laptop powered by a Qualcomm processor and JioOS running on top of Android, JioGlass is a mixed-reality headset that connects to the internet via a cable that must be plugged into the owner’s smartphone. I see a lot of potential in the JioGlass in the future as it offers a new user experience, something that will play a credible role in the metaverse. It’s good to see that an Indian company like Reliance is behind the JioGlass that will provide consumers with mixed and augmented reality experiences. It’s good to attend a massive tech event in person after a long time. (Image credit: Anuj Bhatia/Indian Express) Physical events are back, finally Attending a big tech event in person after two long years was a surreal experience, at least for me. This year, IMC once again brought back telecom executives, trade insiders, policymakers and the press together under one roof. It’s the latest sign that the tech world may be inching back to the traditional in-person events that were the norm before the pandemic forced everything to go virtual. There is an energy and enthusiasm for attending physical events, which cannot be replicated by virtual shows. At IMC 2022, I met key executives and industry insiders in a face-to-face format. After a long time, I got a demo of new technologies and upcoming products by real people which underscored why it’s so important to see tech products in person.

Former Washington State Correctional Officer Sentenced To Forty-Six Months In Federal Prison For Conspiring To Smuggle Drugs And Cell Phones Into The Benton County Jail – Department Of Justice https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/former-washington-state-correctional-officer-sentenced-to-forty-six-months-in-federal-prison-for-conspiring-to-smuggle-drugs-and-cell-phones-into-the-benton-county-jail-department-of-justice/ Richland, Washington – Vanessa R. Waldref, the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, announced today that Eric Christian, age 34, of Kennewick, Washington, was sentenced by Chief District Judge Stanley A. Bastian to serve 46-months in federal prison for conspiring with inmates of the Benton County Jail to smuggle contraband into the jail in exchange for money. Christian, who pled guilty in December 2021 to Conspiracy to Provide Prohibited Objects to an Inmate of a Prison, was also sentenced to three-years supervised release after he completes his time in federal custody. According to court documents and information disclosed during court proceedings, Christian, along with six co-defendants, conspired to introduce multiple cell phones, methamphetamine, heroin, suboxone strips, and other contraband into the Benton County Jail. As part of the conspiracy, which began in January and continued until April 2020, Christian and his coconspirators also provided access to dangerous offenders and gang members so that they could identify, assault, and retaliate against cooperating defendants as well as inmates charged with certain types of offenses. “Mr. Christian was charged with protecting our community, and he breached that trust by providing dangerous criminals and gang members with access to illegal narcotics and unmonitored cell phones in the Benton County Jail,” U.S. Vanessa R. Waldref stated. “Here, a corrections officer breached the community’s trust and accepted money to break the law – exposing inmates at the jail to drugs and violence. Fortunately, this case is the exception, not the rule. I am sincerely grateful for the dedication and service of the vast majority of law enforcement officers, who work tirelessly to honor their duty to keep our communities safe and our neighborhoods strong.” U.S. Marshal Craig Thayer stated, “Integrity throughout the criminal justice system is essential to the fair administration of justice. It is unacceptable for a public official to violate their responsibility and position of community trust. Law enforcement will not tolerate the very few who dishonor their badge, as the vast majority continue to serve with honor and integrity.” “Mr. Christian broke his oath to serve and in doing so threatened the safety of other inmates,” said Jacob D. Galvan, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Seattle Field Division. “I thank all of our state, local and federal partners who assisted in this investigation and work tirelessly every day to ensure illegal contraband, including dangerous narcotics, are kept out of the corrections system.” “This investigation came to a successful conclusion as a result of the efforts and teamwork of the detectives, the corrections staff, and the prosecutors involved,” stated Benton County Sheriff Tom Croskrey, “The Sheriff’s Office worked in collaboration with Benton County Corrections, the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office, and with our federal law enforcement partners.” Sheriff Croskrey continued, “We maintain a high level of expectations of those in law enforcement. When these standards are compromised and criminal conduct occurs, we will hold these individuals accountable.” At sentencing, Chief Judge Bastian noted that Christian not only allowed phones and drugs into the jail, which threatened the stability and safety of the inmates, but he was directly responsible for allowing other inmates to be targeted and assaulted: “This abuse of trust,” and Christian’s “turning a blind eye” when other inmates were assaulted, shook the very core of a system that “depends on correctional officers to keep inmates safe.” The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Drug Enforcement Administration Tri- Cities Task Force, and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Stephanie Van Marter, Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington.

Inflation Rising Prices Causing 79% Of Holiday Travelers To Change Their Plans Bankrate.com

Inflation, Rising Prices Causing 79% Of Holiday Travelers To Change Their Plans – Bankrate.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/inflation-rising-prices-causing-79-of-holiday-travelers-to-change-their-plans-bankrate-com/ ON THIS PAGE Jump to Open page navigation The holiday season is an opportunity to slow down, connect with friends and family or even take a much-needed vacation. But according to a new Bankrate survey, a substantial portion of travelers are rethinking their excursions this year. Of the 43 percent of U.S. adults planning to travel this holiday season, about eight in 10 of those travelers (79 percent) are changing their plans this year due to inflation and rising prices, the survey found. Here is what others say they will be doing, and how you can get the most travel bang from your bucks. How holiday travelers will change their plans Holiday travelers will be adjusting those plans in several ways. The most popular money-saving tactics include: Traveling for fewer days (26 percent) Engaging in less expensive activities (25 percent) Opting for cheaper accommodations and destinations (25 percent) Taking fewer trips (24 percent) Traveling shorter distances (23 percent) Escalating airfare and gas prices are a factor in many of those decisions. In fact, 23 percent of travelers say they will drive rather than fly to their holiday destinations. Conversely, 12 percent are opting to fly instead of drive. People are also turning to their credit cards to cut costs, with 22 percent of travelers saying they will use accumulated rewards to fund holiday travel, including miles, points and other loyalty programs. “Using credit card rewards, frequent flier miles and hotel points can save you a lot of money,” says Bankrate.com senior industry analyst Ted Rossman. “Many people have amassed a lot of these and haven’t traveled much the past few years, so it’s a good time to cash them in. They won’t get more valuable over time.” Inflation’s impact across income groups Household income is a major factor in who is making the majority of the holiday travel adjustments. This is not surprising, since inflation primarily impacts people who earn less. An August 2022 Gallup poll found that 74 percent of lower-income Americans are experiencing either severe or moderate financial hardship, compared to 56 percent of the population as a whole. Bankrate’s survey found that 86 percent of holiday travelers with annual household incomes under $50,000 will change their plans due to inflation and rising prices. That doesn’t mean people with higher incomes aren’t affected: 79 percent of the holiday travelers earning between $50,000 and $79,999 say they are changing their holiday plans due to inflation and rising prices. For those earning between $80,000 and $99,999, it’s 77 percent. For households earning $100,000 or more, it’s 70 percent. Expecting young people for the holidays? You may have to go to them If you’re hosting the festivities this year, you may want to prepare for fewer faces around the table — or to visit them instead. This is especially true if you’re expecting guests from younger generations. According to Bankrate’s survey, younger people are more apt to say inflation is driving their holiday travel plan changes. Gen Zers and millennials are most likely to change their plans because of rising costs, with 82 percent of each age group saying so. People from older generations are also feeling the financial pinch, though. The survey found that 78 percent of Gen Xers and 73 percent of boomers cite inflation as the reason for tweaking their holiday travel plans. If you want to maximize attendance at holiday festivities this year, consider gathering near your youngest family members to eliminate some of the financial strain on those most likely to experience it. Holiday pre-planning is trending Higher travel prices and increased travel disruptions are only adding to the stress many Americans are feeling. Looking ahead, 32 percent of holiday travelers say the expenses will strain their budgets, 31 percent are worried their travel plans will be disrupted, and 22 percent say they feel pressured to spend more than they’re comfortable. The good news is there is still time to prepare and get the best deals. “Travel costs have surged, so it’s important to plan ahead and factor these expenses into your overall holiday budget,” says Rossman. “Airline fares are up 28 percent over the past year. Lodging away from home, on the other hand, is only up 1 percent. I suggest making airplane and hotel reservations earlier than in previous years, since demand will probably outpace supply. This summer, air travel was particularly messy as consumers unleashed pent-up demand and the industry couldn’t keep pace.” Some consumers have already started to get ahead of the costs by booking in advance. Among holiday travelers requiring travel reservations, 16 percent booked before September, and 15 percent planned to book in September. The highest portion, 22 percent, will make their reservations in October, and 21 percent will book in November. Just 11 percent will book in December. A sizable 16 percent of the respondents, though, said they didn’t know what they would do. Holiday travelers will be careful with credit So how will consumers pay for their holiday travel expenses? The survey found 49 percent of holiday travelers plan to pay (or have already paid) with a debit card or cash, 38 percent with credit cards that will be paid in full before interest accrues, 21 percent with rewards points, 18 percent with credit card(s) paid back over time and 8 percent with buy now, pay later services. If you’re wondering how you can ease the financial pressure of travel this holiday season, remember that a great travel credit card can come to the rescue. Many come with built-in perks and benefits that can reduce expenses, such as free checked bags and travel insurance that can save you from the high cost of flight delays and cancelations. This may also be the ideal time to open a new card. Consider one that comes with a valuable sign-up bonus. You can book your travel plans to meet the minimum spend and get the rewards bonus to pay for something else that you need.  A 0 percent APR intro offer can be perfect if you want to have the flexibility of paying off your travel expenses for a year or more with no interest added. With the unpredictability of inflation, the right credit card (used responsibly) can take you where you want to go — into 2023 and beyond. Methodology: Bankrate.com commissioned YouGov Plc to conduct the survey. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. The total sample size was 2,455 adults, including 1,055 who anticipate traveling for the holidays and 829 who require travel reservations. Fieldwork was undertaken between September 7-9, 2022. The survey was carried out online and meets rigorous quality standards. It employed a nonprobability-based sample using quotas upfront during collection and then a weighting scheme on the back end designed and proven to provide nationally representative results. %

A Garden Grows At Belmont Park Past The Wire
A Garden Grows At Belmont Park Past The Wire
A Garden Grows At Belmont Park – Past The Wire https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/a-garden-grows-at-belmont-park-past-the-wire/ Bringing Fresh Vegetables To The Backstretch  ELMONT, N.Y. – “Just look at this lovely garden,” said Stella Cardenas, surveying one of the newest and most vibrant additions to the Belmont Park backstretch: a community vegetable garden.  “Getting this far has taken teamwork, love … and a lot of water.” Leading a quick tour of the fenced-in 72-by-14-foot plot of land, tucked against a small hill just south of Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher’s barn 35, Cardenas, who is the Backstretch Employee Service Team’s (B.E.S.T.) outreach worker and case manager, points out the highlights. There are two kinds of tomatoes – large and cherry – and zucchinis. There are three kinds of peppers – hot, medium and green bell. A few feet away are eggplants, a patch of green beans, and a variety of herbs, including parsley, mint and cilantro. The bounty and splash of color would do a farm stand proud. “Look how far we’ve come with some work and a few seeds,” Cardenas said. “Our hope is this will become the model for creating better nutrition here.” The planting of a community garden is the focus of that model: a crucial part of a pilot program underway at Belmont Park to deliver an array of home-grown vegetables to backstretch families while encouraging a more nutritional diet through workshops. On the agenda is a program to incorporate a few of the vegetables from the garden in menus to be offered at the backstretch cafeteria.  The garden is actually two 36 ft. x 7 ft. plots planted side by side on land recommended by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) because it’s fairly central, close to residential dorms, and can be easily watered by a nearby pump. So, on a muggy day in June, a team from B.E.S.T., the Northwell Health Community Outreach and Community Relations group and Fidelis Care, with shovels in hand, broke ground. Advising them was Northwell Community Relations Program Manager Margaret Schmitt, known as the “Farm lady of Long Island” and formerly of F & W Schmitt’s Family Farm in Melville. The NYRA team then enclosed the garden with fencing. NYRA also regularly waters the property. “When Northwell and B.E.S.T. asked for our help in identifying a suitable piece of property, we didn’t hesitate for a second,” said NYRA Senior Vice President, Operations & Capital Projects Glen Kozak. “This is a good idea that will benefit a lot of people who work on the backstretch. We’re more than happy to contribute.” Gardens aren’t new to the backstretch. Look carefully and you’ll see random tomato vines in the nooks and crannies of Belmont Park barns. The Belmont Child Care Association also sports a vegetable garden at its day care center, Anna House, for the children to learn about healthy eating.  The new garden at Belmont Park fits right into role in the growing holistic approach to healthcare at the track, marking another step forward in Northwell’s emerging relationship with the New York backstretch community. That relationship kicked off in 2020 when Northwell began providing COVID-19 testing for backstretch workers at Belmont Park, and followed in 2021 with dispensing COVID-19 vaccine. More than 90 percent of the hundreds of backstretch workers based at Belmont are vaccinated, which is well above the New York State average.  “From the vaccine program, we got to know some of the backstretch workers and learn about their lives,” said Northwell Corporate Community Relations Regional Manager Patty McColley. “But we wanted to do more than just give vaccines. We wanted to make a difference in the lives of backstretch workers and help them tackle in some cases, high blood pressure and diabetes. It’s helping people in the community to become healthier and more self-sufficient. This is an issue that’s near and dear to our hearts.” Northwell’s Clinical Program Manager and registered dietitian nutritionist Anastasia Schepers agreed, calling the garden a “win-win” – a “link between food and health and a way to promote health and prevent disease.” In early 2022, Northwell’s connection to the backstretch community moved ahead another notch when it assumed the management of Belmont Park’s 1,000-square-foot heath care clinic. Staffed with four rotating Northwell physicians, the Northwell Health/B.E.S.T. Health Care Clinic treats people’s aches and pains, as always, but now takes a more holistic approach to health care by advocating healthy living and preventive care.  “This community collaboration has been years in the making,” said Vice President of Community Relations at Northwell Health Edward Fraser. The clinic also added free screenings for breast and colon cancer, a mental health therapist and classes on ergonomics led by a Northwell physical therapist. “We’re taking a real approach to community medicine and health care on the backstretch,” said B.E.S.T. Executive Director Paul Ruchames. “The clinic for instance is here to deal with the injuries, which it has always done. But what we’re seeing are more people coming in for physicals, and more people interested in learning how to adopt a healthier lifestyle. The planting of the vegetable garden moves the needle ahead even further.” So even as the fall weather turns colder, the Northwell/B.E.S.T. heath care team are formalizing their plan for the vegetable garden next spring. Upwards of 20 backstretch volunteers are sighed up to help plant next year’s garden with all of them set to take home some of the harvest. Coordinating with several Northwell hospitals and with the cafeteria staff at Belmont, it is planning healthy, low sodium menus to serve in the cafeteria as well as the cooking workshops.  “It’s important to create a feeling of ownership with the vegetable garden said Schepers. “To change habits takes time, but we’re confident that we’ll succeed. A lot of good things – and healthy, nutritious food – are ahead for the men and women who work on the backstretch at Belmont Park.” NYRA Cares Feature Story Photo by NYRA

Aaron Judge Is Much More Than A Home Run Hitter And The Yankees Cannot Afford To Lose Him CBS Sports
Aaron Judge Is Much More Than A Home Run Hitter And The Yankees Cannot Afford To Lose Him CBS Sports
Aaron Judge Is Much More Than A Home Run Hitter, And The Yankees Cannot Afford To Lose Him – CBS Sports https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/aaron-judge-is-much-more-than-a-home-run-hitter-and-the-yankees-cannot-afford-to-lose-him-cbs-sports/ There is a new American League home run king. Tuesday night, New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge swatted his 62nd home run of 2022, a new single-season record in the 122-year-old Junior Circuit. The previous record was, of course, 61 home runs by Roger Maris in 1961. Here is Judge’s history-making blast: The 62 home runs are the seventh most in history. Barry Bonds is the all-time leader with 73 in 2001. Mark McGwire (70 in 1998 and 65 in 1999) and Sammy Sosa (66 in 1998, 64 in 2001, and 63 in 1999) are the only others to top Judge’s total. Here is the AL’s new single-season home run leaderboard: Aaron Judge, 2022 Yankees: 62 and counting Roger Maris, 1961 Yankees: 61 Babe Ruth, 1927 Yankees: 60 Babe Ruth, 1921 Yankees: 59 Jimmie Foxx, 1932 Athletics and Hank Greenberg, 1938 Tigers: 58 Home run records get all the attention and understandably so, but Judge is so much more than a home run hitter. He’s in the mix for a batting title and the Triple Crown, he has played most of the season in center field (and played it well), and he has an outside chance to steal 20 bases as well. Judge is baseball’s first 11-WAR player since Bonds in 2004. “I tune it out,” Judge recently told MLB.com about all the attention. “I try to stay off all of that stuff as much as I can. If you have a bad game, they’re going to say something. You have a good game, they’re going to say something. I just focus on what I’ve got to do here, focus on helping this team. The opinions of my teammates and coaches, that’s what matters to me.” Judge’s historic season could not have come at a better time, both for him and the Yankees. He’ll be a free agent in a few weeks and his next contract figures to top $300 million. As for the Yankees, they’ve had an uneven season and nearly collapsed out of the AL East lead entirely. New York is 38-38 since peaking at 61-23 on July 8. The AL East standings since that date: Blue Jays: 46-29 Orioles: 41-34 Rays: 42-36 Yankees: 38-38 Red Sox: 31-45 On July 8 the Yankees led the AL East by 15 1/2 games. The lead was whittled down to 3 1/2 games as recently as Sept. 9. The Yankees were able to right the ship somewhat within these last three weeks and they recently clinched the AL East title, as well as a Wild Card Series bye. Still, the fact they had to sweat a little bit is not something they expected a few months ago. That the Yankees have faded so much these last three months despite Judge’s singular greatness is a damning indictment of the rest of the roster. Judge has hit .345/.494/.769 since our magic date of July 8. The rest of the Yankees have hit .231/.304/.374, which is worse than the .243/.311/.395 league average despite the Yankees playing their home games in home run-happy Yankee Stadium. Wake-up call isn’t the right word. The Yankees know they need Judge. Their recent play is more like a reminder of exactly how much they need him. Judge is the best player in baseball right now and by definition that makes him irreplaceable. Even if he never repeats 2022, Judge has a track record of MVP-caliber seasons. Losing the 2021 version of Judge would be devastating too. New York’s outfield picture beyond 2022 includes Harrison Bader and that’s really it. Giancarlo Stanton is a most-of-the-time DH and Andrew Benintendi will join Judge in free agency after the World Series. Aaron Hicks has seemingly played his way out of town too. Oswaldo Cabrera, a natural infielder, has manned the outfield the last few weeks. The outfield picture without Judge is grim. The upcoming free agent class includes a few quality everyday outfielders (Benintendi, Mitch Haniger, Brandon Nimmo, etc.) but none on Judge’s level. To replace him, the Yankees would have to take the old Moneyball approach. Like the Athletics replacing Jason Giambi, the Yankees would have to upgrade 3-4 positions and replace Judge in the aggregate, and that is very difficult. There’s also an off-the-field component to consider. Judge is the Yankees’ biggest draw since Derek Jeter — No. 99 jerseys now outnumber No. 2 jerseys at Yankee Stadium — and there is no replacing that star power. Good luck building a similarly effective marketing campaign around Stanton or Gerrit Cole or Anthony Volpe. No offense to them, but it can’t be done. Judge sells tickets, and when you sell tickets, you also sell concessions and merchandise. Judge also drives television ratings, and when you do that, you boost ad sales. To wit: When the Yankees offered Judge a $213.5 million extension this spring, they did so because their internal analysis said he would make them multitudes more in revenue. Extending Judge will be a business decision as much as it is a baseball decision. “We’re all disappointed right now that we can’t be talking about a contract extension today. Not now, but hopefully later,” GM Brian Cashman said after Judge rejected the extension in spring training. “… Both sides would like to be here. I think Aaron Judge doesn’t want to be anywhere but here, and we’d love to make that happen as well.” Without Judge the Yankees would likely be battling for a wild-card spot rather than celebrating a division title, and seeing how they have the oldest collection of position players in baseball, there’s not much upside on the roster. Add in the off-the-field impact and losing Judge to free agency would be a double whammy. The Yankees would be worse on the field and make less money. There is always a point where it makes sense to walk away. The bidding war could get out of hand — all it takes is one desperate general manager and/or owner to gum up the works — and reach a point where it makes sense for the Yankees to pivot and use their dollars elsewhere. I suspect that point is far higher with Judge than it is with most players, however. For now, Judge is the new American League home run king, and his unmatched greatness helped the Yankees stave off the largest division collapse in baseball history (no team has blown more than a 13-game lead). His value to the franchise transcends his on-field production and the Yankees can’t afford to lose him to free agency, for more reason than one.
