I think that everyone is curious at some level. That is, they will ask a question when there is something that they don’t know or understand. But, that does not mean that they are inquisitive.
When someone is “inquisitive,” it means that they aren’t just curious — but, that they will follow-up on it. They will ask the second, third or maybe fourth question. And, if they are then not satisfied, they will keep pursuing the matter until they understand more.
In terms of fairly recent American History, the example of President George H.W. Bush vs. his son, George W. Bush, is instructive. The first Bush was on his way to Baghdad with our Army and allies, but he asked the second or third question–who will be with us till the end? Who will run the country if we take it? What will it cost? He stopped the Army on the road to Baghdad.
His son, asked none of these questions. Those around him said: “The Iraqi people will welcome us with open arms.” “Unlike before, we will crush Saddam Hussein.” “We should finish off what your father started,” etc.
Now, decades later, we have, in Iraq, a failed state with several thousand American casualties to prove it, and over a trillion dollars spent on a losing cause. Being inquisitive matters.
I have often thought that successful businessmen (women) are also those who are inquisitive. “I know that we sold a lot of product this year, but what happens if we have a downturn next year?” “I can read the financial statements, but what is the substance behind them?” “Is there a way we can do more with less?”
Obviously, inventors and scientists have to be inquisitive. You don’t discover something new without asking a lot of questions.
In the larger scheme of American History, both Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt were known for appointing advisors who had differing opinions or even different political affiliations than their own in order to get to the truth. They asked a lot of questions.
However, the American President who stands out to me as probably our most inquisitive was Thomas Jefferson. If you have ever visited his homestead at Monticello, you can see the inventions that he was working on, the books he was reading, what was on his mind.
He was able to envision a government other than one controlled by a British monarch and put these ideas into writing.
However, I have always thought that the most inquisitive side of Jefferson came with his push to buy the Louisiana Purchase from the French. He knew it was big, but how big? To figure that out, he got Congress to agree to outfit Lewis and Clark and send them on a mission up the Missouri River and to an end nobody knew.
Two years later, they reappeared having gone over the Continental Divide and on to the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson wanted to always find out what was over the horizon.
You can only do that by asking more questions and seeking more truth. Being inquisitive is a good thing!

According to a blog post today, Shiba Inu sees concept art as an initiative that provides the strongest reference points that align the creative outlook and the hub being introduced.
Similar to the Rock Pond and WAGMI Temple artworks, the first concept of Canyon is depicted in black and white, communicating suggestions and feedback to express the hub’s role in the metaverse.
“Black and white sketches and concept artwork include a strong, physical, and powerful potential, especially in abstract artwork. Amongst the architectural inspiration designs taken from many locations,” The teams behind Shiba Inu metaverse noted.
The early sketch of the Canyon got its inspiration from many locations in the United States, including Badlands in New Mexico, Grand Canyon in Arizona, Moab in Utah, Mesa Verde in Colorado, Lake Tahoe in Nevada, and Salt Flats in Utah.
Additionally, the flora inspiration for the hub was gotten from Desert Wildflowers, Thick Leaf Penstemon, Indian Paintbrush, Desert Phlox, Arizona Thistle, etc.
Furthermore, the teams said they got the fauna inspiration depicted in the artwork from Roadrunner, Giant Centipedes, Wren, Raven, Tarantulas, Lizards, hawks, etc.
“The Canyon elevates the essence of earthy rivers, adventure, and breathtaking Scenery,” the announcement added.
Meanwhile, the Shiba Inu team scheduled a fireside chat on the official Shibtoken Discord group on October 6, 2022, from 5 PM to 8 PM PST.
Shiba Inu Committed to the Success of SHIB: The Metaverse
The development suggests that the team behind the development of SHIB: The Metaverse, Shiba Inu, and The Third Floor (TTF) are working relentlessly toward the project’s success.
Aside from the release of the concept artworks of some hubs of the metaverse, the team has added professionals who will join in the mission of taking the project to greater heights.

Dr. No Turns 60: The Quirky Bond Movie – Tilt Magazine https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/dr-no-turns-60-the-quirky-bond-movie-tilt-magazine/
Dr. No Turns 60: A Retrospective
As James Bond says in 2015’s Spectre while ensnared in Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s Moroccan lair: Tempus fugit. October 5th, 2022 marks the 60th, yes, the 60th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise. Few series’ can claim to have lasted as long as that started by American producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Canadian-born Harry Saltzman when they agreed to translate Ian Fleming’s novel, ”Dr. No,” from novel to screen. Many rivals have lasted a long time, but a significant portion of them, especially in the past couple of decades, go dormant for several years, only to resurface after an extended hibernation. Bond, on the other hand, consistently produces content. Dr. No (DN) premiered at the London Pavilion and started the series that as recently as one year ago saw its 25th outing, No Time to Die, roar across movie screens internationally.
The logical thought process when looking back at the relatively modest franchise premier is to highlight the ingredients that would eventually become series mainstays. Directed by Terrence Young, starring Sean Connery as Bond, Ursula Andress as Honey Rider, and Joseph Wiseman as the eponymous antagonist, the original 007 cinematic adventure is certainly infused with stylistic and storytelling decisions that make up tried, tested, and true Bondian DNA. The suaveness, the international intrigue, the women, the guns, the action, etc. Since it was the filmmaker’s first effort at adapting Ian Fleming’s literary hero, they hadn’t honed a style. Furthermore, given that DN is from 1962, it stands to reason that some filmmaking techniques differed back then.

To celebrate Dr. No’s 60th anniversary, Tilt Magazine looks back at the film’s more peculiar and unique qualities. What are some of the things that make it stand apart, either because the template hadn’t been ironed out or simply because movies were different back in the 60s?
Starting With a Bang
Pre-title Sequence
Bond fans, casual and ardent alike, love watching the first few minutes of a new 007 adventure. After James Bond walks across the screen in a while little dot (a graphical representation of a gun’s barrel, hence the terminology of “gunbarrel scene”) and shoots in the audience’s direction, blood trickles down and viewers are whisked to an undisclosed mission. From there, audiences are treated to some action and fun before the film’s proper story begins. In Bond parlance, this is referred to as the pre-title sequence (as in: “rank the Bond pre-title sequences”).
Credit: EON/DANJAQ
DN plays its cards differently, if only because director Young and company had no template to work from. Simply put, there is no pre-title sequence. Seconds after the blood starts oozing from the top of the screen, the famous James Bond theme erupts and the credits are showcased in colourfully kaleidoscopic fashion courtesy of Maurice Binder. It wouldn’t be until the next movie, From Russia with Love, that 007 films would begin with a thrilling action scene.
Two Actors Playing Bond?
That’s right. There are two actors seen on screen playing James Bond in DN. In fact, Sean Connery is the second actor in the movie to play the part. This isn’t a cheat. The man portraying Bond in the aforementioned gunbarrel scene is not the famed Scotsman. Rather, his stunt double Bob Simmons walks right to left before firing at his would-be assassin.
Title Song Singer
Traditionally Bond films get a popular music artist to belt out a ballad or rock tune that accompanies the opening credits, making the experience feel like its own music video of sorts. As previously established, it is the main Bond theme everyone knows that blasts on the soundtrack. If that wasn’t enough, there are no fewer than three tracks that play over the credits. The Bond theme eventually fades out, replaced with some Jamaican dance music, which itself fades into a calypso rendition of Three Blind Mice!
Soak in the Local Flavour
Jamaican Rhythm
In the laundry list of ingredients that should feature in a Bond adventure is travel to exotic, sexy locations, or very dangerous locations. Missions of the past few decades have taken the British super spy to multiple locations per film. The last time Bond went head-to-head with his foes in as few as two places was in 1989’s Licence to Kill. That was 32 years ago.
Back in the franchise’s youth, the filmmakers took 007 to a single international territory. For DN, the adventure is set in Jamaica, which was where Fleming had set the novel’s story, in addition to where the author spent his winters writing the books. This lends the early movies a different tone and especially a different pace from the ones that followed in the 80s onwards. Can anyone really attest to having a solid feel for Bregenz after watching Quantum of Solace? The same cannot be said of Jamaica, which is where 80% of the first movie takes place.
Keeping the British End up
It’s not only the fact that viewers get to soak in the warm Jamaican sun and its beaches when enjoying DN. The country earned its independence in August of 1962, even though it’s still officially a member of the Commonwealth. Keep in mind that the film was shot in the winter of ’62. When Terence Young and his crew completed their on-location work, Jamaica was still months away from its big day. As such, there are plenty of references to the island’s status as a British colony. People play bridge at the Queen’s Club, and Bond’s contact at the Governor’s House is a typically polite, astute, Caucasian fellow who speaks in the Queen’s eloquent English.
The Home Team
The Quartermaster
Few scenes in Bond movies are as beloved as those when the protagonist and his famous gadget man, Q, banter back and forth as the exasperated Quartermaster (hence, Q) tries his best to make Bond concentrate and understand how to operate his newfangled weapons. All the 007 actors have had tremendous chemistry with their respective Q counterparts, including Daniel Craig with Ben Wishaw.
First-time viewers may be surprised to discover that no character dubbed “Q” appears in DN. Instead, there is an armourer played by Peter Burton. At M’s request, he hands James the now famous Walther PPK, replacing the secret agent’s preferred Beretta. There is no banter between the two. In fact, the scene plays out very much as if the weapons specialist and 007 hardly know each other at all.

Working for MI7
Which fan of the series does not know that James Bond, agent 007, works for His Majesty’s Secret Service, aka the Secret Intelligence Service, aka MI6? Well, apparently that’s not the case in DN. Bernard Lee’s M very clearly states that he is head of MI7 while briefing Bond on his Caribbean-bound mission. Very little information is available to us that would explain exactly why the number 7 is used instead of 6. Of note, there was, at least for a brief while, such a department as MI7 in British Intelligence.
Bond, James Bond
You Know My Name
Ah yes, the famous line that marked in cinematic history. Few character introductions are as iconic as the strange way in which agent 007 introduces himself. Surname, then given name followed by surname once more. The way in which it’s said for the first time ever is not only superbly cool for its 1960s, smoky casino setting (with the Bond theme playing), but for the context in which the line is delivered.
It’s a detail one might not realize until they’ve seen the film multiple times or have it pointed out to them. Everyone gets so excited when Sean Connery says “Bond, James Bond” whilst lighting his cigarette, many forget he is replicating the way his soon-to-be girlfriend says her name. The woman seated across the chemin de fer table, played by Eunice Gayson, is told by un unseen Bond that, given her losses, her courage is admired, Ms…?
“Trench, Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck, Mr…?”
You know the rest.
Credit: EON/DANJAQ
Absent Aston
It seems like in nearly every new film agent 007 gets to ride his beloved grey 1964 Aston Martin DB5. The brand and that model are synonymous with the film franchise to the point where, as beautifully crafted as the luxury vehicle is, few would complain if Bond drove something else in the next iteration.
Bond doesn’t do much driving in DN. The one time he’s behind the wheel, he evades pursuers in a 1961 Alpine Sunbeam. A sporty, cool-looking little car with an open roof, it’s a great machine to joyride Jamaica in. It doesn’t hold the iconic status of the DB5, nor is it tricked out with any optional extras, unless one considers Bond’s extraordinary driving skills as a gadget.
A Super Spy’s Living Quarters
Few of the films take viewers into the hero’s personal home in London. After all, Bond is a man of action, someone constantly called upon to save Britain and civilization as we know it. Given that most of the films open with 007 mid-mission, then a briefing with his chief M, followed by international intrigue and explosions, it is forgivable for not even thinking about what Bond’s home looks like.
Credit: EON/DANJAQ
Of the 25 canonical entries, the protagonist is seen in his London living quarters only three times, the first being in DN. It’s a handsomely decorated flat, at least from what viewers are privy to. The scene comes early in the film after Bond leaves M’s office. Only the entrance hall and what looks to be a living room are visible, but they have a relatively homely feel about them.
Gadget Counter
Some people can’t get enough of 007’s arsenal of gadgets, while others prefer films in which the secret agent relies on his wits more so than easy technological cheats. The latter group can rest easy with the original 1962 picture, as Bond is equipped exclusively with a Geiger counter. Not even one hidden in his watch,...

(Reuters) – A new NFT trading craze where names are bought and sold for eye-popping sums is providing a multi-million-dollar lifeline for speculators shivering in the bleak crypto winter.
“Domain” names such as coin.crypto (which has sold for $100,000) and beer.eth (which fetched $39,000) are a new breed of NFTs that owners can use to replace the jumble of 16 random numbers and letters that form their digital wallet addresses.
It might seem a lot of money for the crypto equivalent of a custom car plate, yet backers say these names could become valuable real estate in the years to come with the advent of Web3, a much-hyped vision of a future internet built on blockchain.
Right now the trading market for these alternative assets is providing rich – and risky – pickings for some investors who are scooping up buzzy domains with the aim of flipping them for a profit in the secondary market on NFT platforms like OpenSea.
“We have domain names starting at as little as $5, we’ve had some sell for as much as $100,000,” said Matthew Gould, CEO Unstoppable Domains, which sells names ending in .crypto, .nft and .wallet on its website.
“The range is because there’s a definite perceived value difference between different words and lengths.”
The company has seen some bumper deals of late: for example wallet.crypto sold for $250,000 and earn.crypto went for $100,000, both in April.
Meanwhile the .eth names generated by the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), the biggest domain seller, were the fourth-most traded type of NFT on OpenSea in September, with total volumes rising 75% from a month ago to the equivalent of $12.5 million.
ENS domain names were topped by only NFTs (non-fungible tokens) from well-known collections such as CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club. Trading in the comparatively new assets has grown apace even as the crypto winter has battered the NFT market.
Monthly registrations for .eth domain names jumped to over 433,000 in September, the highest in the past 12 months and a 5,000% surge from a year ago, according to Dune Analytics.
The domain names which command the highest value are often those with simple and short English words, terms referencing pop culture or Web3, and number sequences, according to experts, such as crypto.nft or 000.eth.
WHAT’S A NAME WORTH?
Crypto domains are still in their infancy, though. There is no guarantee they, or Web3, will live up to their promise, while the highly volatile nature of cryptocurrency and NFT markets suggest perils for the unschooled trader.
Questions also abound on the scalability of the technology, and the potential for confusion as competing domain providers issue similar names, potentially leading to the misrouting of funds, a report by Block Intelligence said.
Sasha Fleyshman, portfolio manager at investment firm Arca in Los Angeles, said domain names were likely to grow in popularity as crypto became more mainstream.
The 16-character alphanumeric addresses used for digital wallets “are not exactly user friendly, especially for non-crypto native people”, he added.
In an indication of some investor confidence that digital assets linked to .eth domain names will grow in value, the ENS project’s crypto token soared nearly 90% in the third quarter to $15.92 – though still a far cry from the $40 it was trading at the beginning of the year. Bitcoin ended the quarter mostly flat, struggling to stay above $20,000.
Yet many market players warn that it’s tough to value a domain name as it amounts to a speculative bet on what might be in demand in the future.
This weakens the case for institutional investment, Fleyshman said.
“From a fund perspective, it’s rather hard to make a fundamental investment into specific domain names,” he added. “It’s just not our wheelhouse to say which domains are going to accrue value and which ones are not.”

Why Crypto’s Big ‘merge’ Is Causing Big Headaches – Dunya News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/why-cryptos-big-merge-is-causing-big-headaches-dunya-news/

Why crypto’s big ‘merge’ is causing big headaches
Ethereum faces bitter opposition from those who lost out from the merge.
PARIS (AFP) – The biggest software upgrade in the short history of crypto has fulfilled its promise to wipe out more than 99 percent of the electricity used by the second-biggest cryptocurrency, experts have told AFP.
That is no mean feat, given that the Ethereum blockchain was burning through about as much electricity as New Zealand.
Sceptics had expected glitches with the upgrade, known as “the merge”, but it ended up being a “rather boring event”, according to Alex de Vries of the Free University in Amsterdam.
De Vries, whose Digiconomist website models the energy use of Bitcoin and Ethereum, said consumption had indeed plummeted by more than 99 percent on Ethereum.
Moritz Platt, a researcher specialising in crypto at King’s College London, said the 99 percent estimates were realistic and heralded a positive step towards “cryptocurrency sustainability”.
So the Ethereum blockchain, which supports billions of dollars of trading in games, tokens, art and the ether currency, has cleaned up its act.
But there are complications.
Ethereum faces bitter opposition from those who lost out from the merge and it could also get greater scrutiny from regulators.
– ‘Astronomical’ growth –
The old system, known as “proof of work”, relied on people and firms to “mine” new coins — an industry worth $22 million daily before the merge, according to de Vries.
The miners used vast power-guzzling computer rigs to compete with each other to solve complex equations, and the winner was awarded the prize of adding entries to the blockchain and generating coins.
The merge wiped out their business model overnight.
“Those rigs do not magically turn back into invested capital,” said a crypto-miner known only as “J” who operates between Singapore and Hong Kong.
He said it was costing him between $30,000 and $40,000 a month to keep his staff and equipment idling while he thinks about his next move.
Plenty of miners have sold off their kit, while others are putting their rigs to work on less profitable blockchains that still use the old system.
A miner who uses the name Leon Ravencoin, for example, has been tweeting non-stop about the “astronomical” growth of Ravencoin, one of the currencies to get a boost after the merge.
The combined computing power used by these coins is around one-fifth of the pre-merge Ethereum blockchain.
However, de Vries said they generated only about $500,000 in daily revenue so only the most energy-efficient machines with the lowest energy costs would be able to make a profit.
As a result, one-fifth of the computing power would work out far less than one-fifth of the electricity use.
– ‘Designed to be centralised’ –
Aside from the problem with miners, the new system, known as “proof of stake”, has several issues baked in.
Anyone willing to stake a large amount of ether can now “validate” new entries on the blockchain.
The more you stake, the more chance you have of updating the chain and earning coins.
The system gives an advantage to the biggest players, and just three companies now account for more than half of “validators”, according to research by Dune Analytics.
Cryptocurrencies were envisaged as a decentralised alternative to the banks, corporations and governments that failed so spectacularly during the global crash of 2008.
But crypto-miner J said the new Ethereum was “designed to be more centralised” and suggested it no longer had a real purpose.
Regulators have also begun to pay attention, with US Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler suggesting proof-of-stake looked like a securities market that would fall under his remit.
The disaster scenario for Ethereum would be that enough disgruntled purists switch to one of the gas-guzzling proof-of-work alternatives, with Ethereum Classic being the main one.
“There is nothing capping Ethereum Classic prices,” said de Vries, meaning that miners could potentially make good profits if the market shifted their way.
A rush from the greener blockchain was “theoretically definitely possible”, he said.

Abolish Fall Break – The Chronicle – Duke Chronicle https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/abolish-fall-break-the-chronicle-duke-chronicle/
The idea of Duke’s fall break has always perplexed me. Spring break makes sense; even though it isn’t usually positioned around Easter or another holiday, it marks pretty evenly the middle of the second semester, and gives a long enough pause from classes and assignments to do something. Whether that be to go somewhere, get ahead on your work or just relax for a while, spring break at least lets you breathe.
Inherently, fall break isn’t a horrible idea, but in practice it falls rather short. For whatever reason we only get off about one total week of classes per semester, so the presence of a fall break makes Thanksgiving break shorter, giving students and faculty two mediocre pauses rather than one good one.
Fall break’s justification is also its side effect: midterms. We have fall break to recover from the preceding midterms, but we have these midterms all at the same time because fall break is a natural barrier between segments of course material. With such a short break, even if you leave, your assignments don’t really pause. There’s a difference between having no class and having a break.
Last year I stayed on campus for both fall and Thanksgiving breaks, because of COVID concerns and travel costs, and it looks like the same will be true of this semester. Staying on campus was obviously not as nice as visiting home or going on a short vacation might have been, but the actions of the university only made things worse. For example, there were not any on-campus dining options throughout Thanksgiving day, and very limited ones for the rest of the break. This year, I imagine there will be more of the same.
On the First-Year Dining page, it says that freshmen will not get Marketplace swipes for dinner Friday, October 7th through breakfast Tuesday, October 11th, nor breakfast Wednesday, November 23rd through breakfast Sunday, November 27th. While this is nice for the Marketplace workers for getting a bit of a break as well, freshman staying here will have to figure out what to do about those missing meals; with the massive food inflation across campus, relying on food points won’t be a perfect solution.
Here’s the thing: if you’re staying on campus for the breaks, there’s a reason for it. Maybe home is too far, maybe you can’t afford to go anywhere or maybe you just want a mental health break instead of a stressful half-week of travel. Not only can you not go anywhere while seeing many of your peers on fancy weekend trips or flying home to California for a long weekend, but you have to plan ahead for how to get food and navigate campus with limited facility hours and bus routes. Not to mention that every conversation before and after a break revolves around what you’re planning to do or did do.
The icing on the cake is that parents’ weekend is a week after fall break, and I imagine there’s a lot of overlap between people staying here for the break and also not having their parents visit the next weekend. It’s a further reminder of the amount of privilege at Duke for the students whose families can’t justify visiting. The negatives of not leaving for breaks are compounded on the students who are already disadvantaged—the setup of the fall semester breaks is classist, to say the least.
Since coming here, the whole academic calendar situation has confused me. Last summer was absurdly long—there were about seventeen weeks off, practically the entirety of May through August. All through that time, Duke was able to host, in addition to summer session, a wide variety of camps and programs for high schoolers willing to shell out whatever money Duke wanted to charge. The more time us students spend on campus, the less time anyone else can. I don’t know if this is why Duke tries to minimize the total time us students are here for the academic year, but it seems a tad suspicious. Why can’t we have two weeks off during the semesters and a fifteen-week summer?
Staying here for fall break isn’t horrible—it is a piddly two days off, after all—but Thanksgiving is another story. Perhaps if we had a week-long Thanksgiving break—or even one week off for fall break and another for turkey day—it would feel worth it to fly home for the holiday, but it’s really hard to justify spending upwards of $400 to fly home for maybe three full days with my family.
Especially since the majority of students at Duke do not live in North Carolina, the presence of such a short break doesn’t make the same amount of sense it does at a state school, like UNC, at which students could a lot more easily drive home for an extended weekend. Perhaps it’s a lazy institutional attempt to provide the appearance of caring about giving students a mental break, by implementing a practice that some other colleges have.
I might understand the odd length more if it overlapped a holiday—perhaps Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as a guest column suggested—or if they were days in addition to rather than subtracted from Thanksgiving break. Perhaps we could have a couple of random long weekends sprinkled throughout the semester, or start earlier, having winter break begin at Thanksgiving and end at New Years, with a week long fall break in the middle (although, knowing us, I fear too long of a break would lead to the necessity of “winternships”).
Duke undeniably lives up to its work hard, play hard culture, but the presence of two tiny breaks goes a bit too far. We get time off, but nowhere near long enough to actually relax. If you travel, you’ll probably end up farther behind work-wise than you started. If you don’t, you feel the effects of a campus that doesn’t really want you there. If Duke wants to stick with the presence of two tiny breaks in the fall, they should provide resources for the students who don’t have much of a choice but to be here; at the very least they shouldn’t add to the food insecurity that so many students already feel. Otherwise, let’s make fall break an actual break or abolish it entirely.

ROMNEY — Sammi Sproul blazed Hampshire High School’s mud-splattered course in 22:25 to place second individually and lead the Elkins High School girls cross country team to a runner-up finish at the Paul Clovis Invitational on Saturday.
Delia White (6th, 23:45) and Raighan Hall-Carte (12th, 24:16) also earned medals by finishing among the Top 15.
Taylor Lanham (21st, 25:04) and Emma Gilbert (24th, 25:39) rounded out the top five scorers for the Lady Tigers, whose 65 points put them close behind Martinsburg’s 61 for the team title.
Hedgesville’s Allison Bray won the individual crown with a time of 21:46.
“The girls were more aggressive off of the starting line today and it helped us establish good positions early on,” EHS coach Scott Biola said. “The next step for us is to get out hard and keep advancing throughout the back half of the race.”
Other girls teams competing in the meet included Hampshire (80), Frankfort (120), Hedgesville (126), Somerset Area (Pa.) (135), Musselman (165), Spring Mills (187) and Washington (191).
Like the Lady Tigers, the Elkins boys also put three individuals in the Top 15 and took second overall as a team. Medal winners for the boys included Tyler Burda (8th, 19:37), Gavin Brown (11th, 19:47) and Preston Nixon (14th, 20:03).
Josh Bodkins (18th, 20:20) and Bobby Valentine (22nd, 20:35) also contributed to the Tigers’ team total of 73 points. Elkins’ 57-second spread amongst its five scorers was the tightest grouping in the nine-team meet.
“Despite the weather today, the boys had a great performance,” coach Amanda Carter said. “Three boys in the Top 15 … we will absolutely take that and continue to build momentum heading into the Big 10 Championships next week.”
Washington’s Noah Schappell captured the individual win in 18:21 and Frankfort’s boys took the team trophy with 41 points.
Trailing Frankfort and Elkins in the team standings were Hedgesville (97), Hampshire (117), Musselman (122), Washington (145), Martinsburg (158), Spring Mills (199) and Somerset Area (217).
The EHS cross country teams will return to action on Oct. 13 in Kingwood for the Big 10 Conference Championships at Preston High School.

Airthings View Plus Review – Pickr – Pickr https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/airthings-view-plus-review-pickr-pickr/
Not sure if the rooms in your home are the right temperature or need clearer air? The Airthings View Plus could help, though we’re not sure how much.
What is the Airthings View Plus?
Designed to monitor the air for nasties that might cause you or loved ones harm, the Airthings View Plus is an air monitor with the ability to track and check the air you leave the gadget in.
One of a few models found in the Airthings range, the View Plus is basically the premium model that can do it all, and even shows you results on a small display.
Ovular in design, the View Plus is very much a passive device that you just leave on, connected, and to do its own thing, with a small electronic ink screen up front that can be configured to show the measurements you need most, with a hand wave in front of a sensor telling you whether the air is good with a happy face, or less good without.
You can have it run on batteries for up to two years, or even keep it plugged into a USB Type C power source if need be. All up, it’s a fairly simple design made for use inside the home, though works for one room at a time.
What does Airthings View Plus do?
Air monitoring information on the View Plus includes tracking dust particle levels in the air (PM), excess CO2 from when we breathe out or cry, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, airborne chemicals known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that emerge often from the paints and treatments used on furniture, and even potentially slight forms of radioactivity called radon.
There’s also an app that can talk to your phone, compiling the results of previous days to let you know whether you have issues in the immediate, or if they’ve been building for some time.
It’s the sort of technology that might be handy if you have loved ones with a respiratory illness or some form of immunodeficiency, as it can provide a glance as to what the air is doing inside your home and their room, reporting in either the app, the gadget’s screen, or even popping up on your wearable.
Does it do the job?
If you’re looking for a way to check what the air is like in a room, the Airthings View Plus definitely provides that, with a quick read out on the small e-ink display on the device, plus a little more with some data over an extended amount of time.
Helpful data like an increase on VOC levels might make you rethink your furniture choices, or even go out and buy a purifier that can cut back on the levels of airborne chemicals, such as when you touch a piece of furniture. It’s a similar situation if you’re intending to work out if a room is too hot or too cold, and whether that drives you to turn on a fan or the AC. That can be super helpful, because those insights could calm air levels in a room in the following ways:
Too much CO2? Open a window. Easy.
Too many VOCs? Consider a purifier and switch it on.
Temperature too high? Turn on the AC or switch on a fan. Makes sense.
The issue of temperature has been quite useful through our time reviewing the View Plus, simply because it provided a good understanding of the warmth for the newborn’s room.
With temperature being tracked on the floor with a heater and up top in a baby monitor, the Airthings View Plus provided a position in the middle of each that was able to more accurately cite what our baby would have been feeling the temperature to be, which was always a degree or two cooler than the gauge in the camera.
Unfortunately, insights like this need to be interpreted by you, the user, and worse, can’t be triggered in an automatic way, at least not at the time of publishing this review.
What does it need?
We live in a world where many things can connect. Grab some smart lights and they can be triggered and controlled remotely, and the same is true for many appliances, fans, air conditioners, and so on and so on. The world of the smart home is upon us, and things can talk. They can trigger from each other and play nice.
But Airthings doesn’t appear to have gotten that memo, at least not in a remarkably complete kind of way.
You can connect Alexa to your Airthings account and get it to check a sensor reading in a room, and you can have that talk to IFTT or Amazon Alexa in the smallest of ways. But it’s not a simple logic of “if temperature equals this, then do something else” sort of affair.
It would be great if an increase in temperature detected by Airthings could trigger Alexa or IFTTT to turn on a compatible fan, or even if the View Plus picked up on increased humidity, if it could turn on the power switch for a smart power point connected to a dehumidifier. These should all be technically possible, but none of them are at present.
In fact, almost every attempt we had at making a smart home action for the Airthings View Plus didn’t result in success. The most we could seem to do was ask Alexa what the temperature was, which wasn’t exactly our idea of using the View Plus to improve our smart home, and just came back to that overall problem of lacking any immediate action inside the smart home.
Is it worth your money?
You’ll likely find a few insights here and there with the View Plus, but at $399, it’s hard to call it a compelling purchase, especially given where aspects of the technology can be found.
Comparatively, Dyson’s Purifer Cool Link fan range has the ability to monitor temperature, VOCs, and particulate matter, and adds in a way to treat it, too. Granted, it comes in a little more, fetching a good $300-400 on top, but it provides the “action” part of the insight, which is what Airthings lacks.
Yay or nay?
Simply put, the Airthings View Plus is all insight, no action, and that makes this one a difficult choice. There are some suggestions at times — open a window — but for the most part, this is insights with little action, something that itself is frustrating, to say the least. You can make your own calls, of course, but if there was a little more in the way of joining the dots, the roughly $400 spend for the View Plus would make sense for more people.
If you have someone that you care for who needs to have these details checked, the View Plus could be a handy addition. However, Airthings really needs to sort out its smart home connections and capabilities, because that lets down the package overall. It means you can get the information, but you’ll need to work out what to do with it, because there’s no too much help here, automatic or otherwise.
Airthings View Plus
The good
Works without much intervention
Provides data without an app on its on-screen eInk display
Offers more data for use over time in the app
The not-so-good
Doesn’t give you many actionable insights
Connecting to the rest of the smart home isn’t as seamless or easy as it could be
How Worried Are Ethereum Devs About Safety At Devcon Bogotá? Decrypt
How Worried Are Ethereum Devs About Safety At Devcon Bogotá? – Decrypt https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/how-worried-are-ethereum-devs-about-safety-at-devcon-bogota-decrypt/
Cadres of crypto developers began trickling into Bogotá, Colombia, on Monday in anticipation of Devcon, the Ethereum Foundation’s marquee global conference, which is set to kick off next week in the South American nation’s capital city.
But according to reports, some of crypto’s leading digital builders may already be second-guessing those travel plans.
Twitter buzzed early Monday with rumors of Devcon attendees being robbed and experiencing other safety issues after arriving in Bogotá. On Monday morning, Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal tweeted that he would no longer be attending Devcon “due to safety concerns.”
Source: Twitter
Nailwal has since deleted the tweet, and did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Decrypt clarifying why he deleted the comment or whether he would still be attending the conference.
Ethereum core developers, meanwhile, largely dismissed the rumors swirling Monday as sensationalized and consistent with what travelers to the region should reasonably expect.
“I don’t think [the safety issue] is as bad as people are saying,” Ethereum core developer Terence Tsao told Decrypt.
“I think all these people getting mugged aren’t exercising common sense,” said Ethereum core developer Raul Jordan to Decrypt.
Jordan confirmed he’d already heard multiple accounts of Devcon attendees getting mugged upon arrival in Bogotá, but emphasized that these individuals had all made themselves into “huge targets” by “trusting strangers, wearing bright clothing, big backpacks, and shorts, and […] taking phone calls in public,” among other missteps.
having thousands of rich eth holders all fly to bogota for ethereum devcon, with their nerdy unicorn tshirts and their private keys on laptops and phones and usb devices, must be the stupidest thing the ethereum foundation has ever done and that’s saying a lot
— Udi Wertheimer (@udiWertheimer) October 3, 2022
Devcon’s site advises all conference attendees to follow the Colombian practice of “No des papaya,” which translates to “not giving a papaya”—a local expression that means avoid making yourself an obvious target. The site lists tips such as avoiding wearing flashy items, leaving valuables at home, and abstaining from walking in public with phones and laptops.
Marius Van Der Wijden, another Ethereum core developer, told Decrypt that he plans “to travel very light” and mitigate risks by purchasing a burner phone for the trip. He expects other developers will likely follow suit.
It’s unclear whether the conference attendees thus far targeted were unaware of these warnings; Jordan felt the Ethereum Foundation’s obligation to warn Devcon attendees was besides the point.
“I think people should do their research on the safety of any region in the world they are visiting,” Jordan said.
One crypto-specific twist to standard travel precautions in the case of Devcon appears to be the necessity of avoiding wearing apparel donned with the logos of crypto companies and organizations, a common practice at promotion-heavy conferences.
Avoid looking like an easy target:
– Wearing expensive jewelry
– Bringing all your cash with you in your pocket
– Carrying your laptop if you know you’re going to be walking around all day
– Walking around with your iPhone in your back pocket or hand
– Wearing crypto clothes

Heard someone from the Solana eng team got robbed at Bogota airport (they were wearing Solana merch lmao).
Think ETH devs should value safety for me bringing no crypto stuff at all.
Picking up and new laptop and phone tomorrow. Taking zero chances.

Apparently, a Solana shirt is, by local standards, a papaya.

US Warns About Foreign Efforts To Sway American Voters WOKV
US Warns About Foreign Efforts To Sway American Voters – WOKV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/us-warns-about-foreign-efforts-to-sway-american-voters-wokv/
WASHINGTON — (AP) — Federal officials are warning ahead of the November midterms that Russia is working to amplify doubts about the integrity of U.S. elections while China is interested in undermining American politicians it sees as threats to Beijing’s interests.
An unclassified intelligence advisory, newly obtained by The Associated Press, says China is probably seeking to influence select races to “hinder candidates perceived to be particularly adversarial to Beijing.” In the advisory, sent to state and local officials in mid-September, intelligence officials said they believe Beijing sees a lower risk in meddling in the midterms versus a presidential election.
While officials said they’ve not identified any credible threats to election infrastructure in the U.S., the latest intelligence warning comes amid the peak of a midterm campaign in which a rising number of candidates and voters openly express a lack of confidence in the nation’s democratic processes.
Foreign countries have long sought to sway public opinion in America, perhaps most notably in a covert Russian campaign that used social media to sow discord on hot-button social issues ahead of the 2016 presidential election. The U.S. government has been on high alert since, warning about efforts by Russia, China and Iran to meddle in American politics and shape how voters think.
The U.S. faces foreign influence campaigns while still dealing with growing threats to election workers domestically and the systematic spread of falsehoods and disinformation about voter fraud. Former President Donald Trump and many of his supporters — including candidates running to oversee elections in several states — continue to lie about the 2020 presidential election even as no evidence has emerged of significant voter fraud.
“The current environment is pretty complex, arguably much more complex than it was in 2020,” Jen Easterly, director of the Department of Homeland Security’s cybersecurity arm, told reporters Monday.
Russia is amplifying divisive topics already circulating on the Internet — including doubts about the integrity of American elections — but not creating its own content, said a senior FBI official who briefed reporters Monday on the condition of anonymity under terms set by the bureau.
Overall, the official said, China’s efforts are focused more on shaping policy perspectives, including at the state and local level, rather than on electoral outcomes.
Still, China appears to have focused its attention on a “subset of candidates” in the U.S. it sees as opposed to its policy interests, the official explained. In one high-profile case, the Justice Department in March charged Chinese operatives in a plot to undermine the candidacy of a Chinese dissident and student leader of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 who was running for a congressional seat in New York.
The briefing Monday came weeks after DHS distributed an advisory that described China’s approach during this midterm as different from the 2020 election, when the intelligence community assessed that China considered but did not deploy efforts to influence the presidential election.
There were publicly revealed examples during the last presidential election of influence campaigns originating in China. Facebook in September 2020 took down pages that posted what it said was a “small amount of content” on the election; that effort focused primarily on the South China Sea.
The DHS advisory doesn’t list specific races or states where it thinks China-linked actors might operate, but cites the March indictment alleging efforts to undermine the New York congressional candidate. It also suggests China’s interest in politics extends beyond the U.S., saying Australian intelligence since 2017 has scrutinized Chinese government attempts to support legislators or candidates, including those who have amplified Beijing’s stances on select issues.
A DHS spokesperson said the department regularly shares threat information with federal, state and local officials.
Chinese and Russian officials and state media have historically rejected U.S. allegations of election meddling and pointed in turn to American influence efforts in other countries.
State and local governments are limited in what they can do against influence campaigns, given that “their job isn’t to police political conversation,” said Larry Norden, an election security expert with the Brennan Center for Justice.
“I do think there is a lot voters should be doing,” he added. “If they are seeing messages about candidates presented in an alarmist or emotionally charged way, their radar should be going up. They should be checking the accuracy of claims, and if they are seeing false claims, they should be letting the social media companies know.”
Scott Bates, the deputy secretary of state in Connecticut, noted that election officials in the state had responded to warnings about foreign influence dating back to 2016.
“Our best defense is to have an educated populace,” he said.
He drew a distinction between misinformation about election processes and misinformation about a candidate or campaign.
“The election process, we can protect that,” he said. “If you’re talking about talking trash about a candidate, we’re not in the business of patrolling that.”
Some signs of influence operations from Russia and China are already public.
Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said in late September that it disabled a sprawling disinformation network coming from Russia involving sham news websites and hundreds of fake social media accounts. Researchers also exposed a much smaller network originating in China that was intended to spread divisive political content in the U.S., but reached only a tiny audience.
Officials at the FBI and DHS said Monday they were not aware of any credible threat to election infrastructure. A senior FBI official said that though officials were not tracking any specific effort by a foreign government to hack election equipment, they were nonetheless concerned that an adversary could spread exaggerated or false claims of compromise to undermine confidence in the elections.
Besides concerns about cybersecurity and foreign influence campaigns, the FBI is increasingly focused on physical threats to election workers.
The FBI created a task force in the summer of 2021 to deal with an influx of threats to election security workers. Since then, it has received and reviewed more than 1,000 reports of harassing communication. Most of the harassment came from email, phone calls and social media, and the majority primarily originated in states where there were ongoing audits of election results.
Of those tips, about 11% met the threshold of a potential federal crime. The task force has made four arrests, the FBI said. Officials cited constitutional barriers in bringing more cases because of the First Amendment’s strong protection of an individual’s political speech.

Hastings Law Enforcement Benefits From Technological Advancements – KSNB https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/hastings-law-enforcement-benefits-from-technological-advancements-ksnb/
HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – Every year, new technology is released. Hastings Police Department is doing the best they can to keep up with the trends and use it to their advantage to do their jobs more efficiently.
The upgrades include staying up to date with body cameras, police cruiser and crime scene equipment, and more.
HPD Captain Mike Doremus told Local4 News technological advancement has come in handy with several different areas of their department, ranging from how a phone call is received, to how an officer investigates a call for service or a crime.
It’s not just the upgrades they’ve made within their department that’s helping law enforcement everyday while on shift.
“When it comes back to like cell phones on the scene prior to an officer arriving, somebody that’s witnessing a crime can snap pictures or snap a video of what’s taken place before police arrive on scene — And that’s something that we use a lot for our investigation,” said Doremus. “Whether it’s a cellphone, or it’s a doorbell, or just a camera on a business or a home.”
Doremus said they try to keep up with the latest technology as best they can and, because of it, officers have been able to have quicker response times.
“There’s always new and improved things,” he noted. “Sometimes there’s a budgetary impact so, we might not have everything that there is available but we do very well as an agency to have those many tools available to us.”
Currently, HPD is working to upgrade to a Next Generation 911 system. This would allow their dispatch to receive both photos and videos through a text message.

NEW YORK — With the Mets‘ offense reeling after New York was swept by the Atlanta Braves, the absence of outfielder Starling Marte is a gaping hole in the lineup.
However, Mets manager Buck Showalter said Monday that Marte, who is dealing with a nondisplaced fracture of his right middle finger, will not return for the final three games of the regular season. Showalter did not rule out Marte returning on Friday, when the team could begin hosting a wild-card round.
“We’re looking at ways to manage the discomfort, trying to see if there’s some way,” Showalter said.
The Mets placed Marte on the injured list on Sept. 10. On Monday, Marte tried swinging a bat with two hands to test the finger. His attempt showed “little progress” and did not inspire confidence, Showalter said.
“We’ll see what the next few days bring,” Showalter said.
Marte was hitting .292/.347/.468, with 16 homers, 18 stolen bases and a 3.7 bWAR, before going on the injured list. While the Mets ranked fourth in baseball entering Monday in runs scored since Marte went on the injured list, the team has struggled to come through at the plate in key moments, including in a sweep by the Chicago Cubs in early September and a shutout last week against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Marte’s absence was particularly noticeable in the Mets’ three-game series against the Braves — in which they were outscored 14-7.
Showalter said the team is pressing right now in the wake of the sweep by Atlanta.
“I know how much they care. I know how much the fans care,” Showalter said. “You hate to disappoint people — it hurts.”
The one scenario in which the Mets can end their season with a National League East Division title requires the Miami Marlins to sweep the Braves and the Mets to sweep the Washington Nationals. The Marlins beat the Braves 4-0 on Monday night, while the Nationals-Mets opener was postponed because of rain and will be made up in a doubleheader Tuesday.
But until the Mets are mathematically eliminated from winning the division crown, Showalter would not engage in talk about a potential wild-card matchup.
“We’re hoping [the Braves] lose three and we win three,” Showalter said. “I ain’t giving in. I’ve got a lot of confidence in [Marlins manager] Don Mattingly.”

1. Sioux Falls Washington, (8), 8-1, 64; 2. O’Gorman (6), 11-3, 61; 3. Harrisburg, 12-2, 43; 4. Sioux Falls Jefferson, 7-3, 24; 5. Sioux Falls Lincoln, 11-4, 17.
Washington retains tight lead: Last week, Sioux Falls Washington held a two-vote lead over O’Gorman for the top spot. Washington took down Huron in five sets, knocking Huron out of the top five, while O’Gorman picked up wins over Pierre and Sioux Falls Christian. Still, Washington gained an extra vote and leads O’Gorman by three votes. The two teams don’t play until Oct. 21 for their only regular-season meeting.
With Huron dropping out from the No. 4 spot, Jefferson moved from No. 5 to No. 4 and Lincoln jumped in at No. 5.
Others receiving votes: Huron, 12-5, 1.
1. Sioux Falls Christian (14), 15-4, 70; 2. Dakota Valley, 13-5, 55; 3. Wagner, 18-2, 37; 4. Canton, 14-1, 23; 5. Platte-Geddes, 15-4, 11.
That looks familiar: The Chargers lost to a South Dakota opponent for the first time this year when they fell in five sets to Class AA No. 2 O’Gorman. However, they remain at the No. 1 slot in the poll, and the rest of the class remained in the same spot from last week as well. The only changes in the poll come in how many votes each team received, with Dakota Valley going from 56 to 55, Wagner gaining 12 votes from 25 to 37 and Platte-Geddes losing three votes from 14 to 11.
Others receiving votes: Rapid City Christian, 20-5, 7; Elkton-Lake Benton, 17-2, 5; Miller, 19-2, 2.
1. Warner (14), 25-2, 70; 2. Chester Area, 16-5, 51; 3. Burke, 22-3, 37; 4. Northwestern, 14-8, 33; 5. Wolsey-Wessington, 16-3, 18.
Flip flop at No. 3 and 4: Warner unanimously stayed at the top of the Class B rankings again, but Northwestern slid for the second week in a row. After dropping from No. 2 to No. 3 last week, Northwestern was jumped by Burke this week. The Cougars’ big week featured four wins at the Great Plains Conference tournament, as well as a sweep over Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Monday and a sweep over Boyd County, Nebraska, on Thursday. Wolsey-Wessington stayed at the No. 5 spot this week.

Succos is the perfect time for families and friends to spend quality time and travel together. Now, there’s no need to pay for individual rooms per night; get your own house with enough rooms for all of the kids, multiple bathrooms, and a private pool. Full Story
Succos is the perfect time for families and friends to spend quality time and travel together. Many people find hotels or Airbnbs at vacation destinations like Florida. But for many, the prices of hotels and Airbnbs are daunting, and the idea of kashering a kitchen with only one sink can seem like too much of a hassle, and the mere thought of schlepping one’s own pots and pans and scrambling for last-minute ingredients takes away all the allure of vacationing.
“But vacations shouldn’t be challenging,” says Koby, vacation rental manager of Kosher Homes. This Succos, Kosher Homes has set up vacation homes customized for frum families traveling to South Florida. Kosher Homes’ luxurious vacation homes include kosher kitchens and appliances, private pools, and best of all, they are all walking distance to a shul or Chabad House. They also have food options to provide guests with delicious high-end gourmet Yom Tov meals.
Now, there’s no need to pay for individual rooms per night; get your own house with enough rooms for all of the kids, multiple bathrooms, and a private pool. Each of Kosher Homes’ spacious homes include two sinks and separate sets of kosher dishes.
In fact, all your needs, including Shabbos candles, a hot water urn, a table cloth, and even a sukkah, will be taken care of for you. “We want to service kosher clientele,” Koby says, “and give them a five-star experience.”
Chol Hamoed will be a breeze, as Kosher Homes operates in South Florida in Cooper City, Dania Beach, and Hollywood, where there are plenty of kosher restaurants and supermarkets. Cooper City in Broward County, FL houses a blossoming Jewish community with kosher grocery stores brimming with heimishe foods and kosher restaurants within a short driving distance. With two minyanim, daily shiurim, it is also the perfect vacation spot for a Jewish family. Brooke Hecht was nervous when she arrived at her Kosher Home Airbnb. She arrived at five AM with her two small children in tow. It wasn’t long before she realized that she was in good hands.
“Kosher Homes came to the rescue,” she says. “There were brand new pots and pans and everything was kosher. Every time I needed something, someone came right away to help.” When Brooke needed an appliance fixed one hour before Shabbos, someone was there immediately.
Israel, an investor and owner of Kosher Homes, knows that people are always looking to go away. “Last winter I drove around Cooper City, Dania Beach, and Hollywood. I saw at least twenty-five restaurants with a good hechsher, and so many heimishe yidden. Rabbi Pinny Andrusier showed me around his hotel and campus. It was beautiful. I found a minyan and then another minyan. I walked into (kosher supermarkets) KC, The Grove, and Aroma, and I felt like I was at Goldberg’s Grocery or Gourmet Glatt. That’s how heimish it was. And there are four or five groceries just like that. We got some investors together, and here we are, less than a year later.”
“I see a lot of people migrating from New York and LA,” says David Levinson, a broker at MDL Realty Group. “They are looking for a better life, and finding it in Cooper City.” He cites the nearby TAG yeshiva, the hotel, and two beautiful mikvaos. “You can even rent out the hotel and have all your family members come for reunions, weddings, and bar mitzvahs.”

Judge: ITG Is Liable For Florida Tobacco Settlement Payments 69News WFMZ-TV
Judge: ITG Is Liable For Florida Tobacco Settlement Payments – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/judge-itg-is-liable-for-florida-tobacco-settlement-payments-69news-wfmz-tv/
DOVER, Del. (AP) — Cigarette manufacturer ITG Brands assumed liability for tobacco settlement payments to the state of Florida when it acquired four brands from Reynolds American in 2015, a Delaware judge has ruled.
Vice Chancellor Lori Will ruled Friday that, as a result, ITG must compensate Reynolds American for losses due, granting summary judgment in favor of Reynolds.
Reynolds sold the Kool, Winston, Salem and Maverick brands to ITG in 2014 to gain federal regulators’ approval of its acquisition of Lorillard Inc.
Before the sale closed, Reynolds American affiliate R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. was making payments under a preexisting settlement agreement with Florida for reimbursement of smoking-related health care costs. After closing, Reynolds stopped making payments for the four brands it no longer owned.
The asset purchase agreement required ITG to use reasonable best efforts to join the Florida settlement and make annual payments to Florida for sales of the brands it acquired from Reynolds. ITG has yet to join the settlement agreement with Florida or make any payments.
Florida sued Reynolds and ITG and obtained a judgment requiring Reynolds to continue making payments based on ITG’s brands, unless and until ITG joined the Florida settlement agreement.
“That judgment on Reynolds amounts to over $170 million to date and tens of millions of dollars more each year into perpetuity,” Will noted. The “unambiguous terms” of the asset purchase agreement support Reynold’s arguments that ITG agreed to assume the liability imposed by the Florida judgment and must indemnify Reynolds, she concluded.
The ruling comes in a long-running legal battle between Reynolds and ITG, both based in North Carolina. In 2017, a different Court of Chancery judge concluded that ITG’s obligation to use its best efforts to try to reach a tobacco settlement agreement with Florida did not end when the sale closed.
Last year, Reynolds asked ITG to compensate Reynolds Tobacco for what it had paid and will pay due to the Florida judgment, but ITG refused. In subsequent litigation, ITG argued unsuccessfully that it had fulfilled its reasonable best efforts obligation and was not required to indemnify Reynolds for the payment liability to Florida.
Last year, in the settlement of a lawsuit brought by the state of Minnesota, ITG agreed that it had assumed obligations under that state’s tobacco settlement agreement to make payments for sales of the four brands it acquired from Reynolds. ITG agreed to make payments to Minnesota for 2021 and all future years, while payment liabilities for the period from 2015 to 2020 were split between ITG and Reynolds.

Lifelong Foods With A Reputation For Healthy Living That’s Damaging Your Pancreas You Don’t Know It – World Nation News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/lifelong-foods-with-a-reputation-for-healthy-living-thats-damaging-your-pancreas-you-dont-know-it-world-nation-news/
Rice is a very inexpensive product that we love and it goes great with almost any dish. It is therefore very easy to overdo it: we serve ourselves in large quantities or, more likely, We program this into our menu several times a week. Although rice is a food for a lifetimeWe should be careful with its consumption as it is common practice in Spain to buy white rice and this has been linked to a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
White rice is a grain that has been refined, like the wheat used to make white bread. that is, When rice is harvested, there are three basic parts of its grain: the germ, which allows the reproduction of the plant from which it comes; endosperm, which is the thickest part and has a high starch content; And finally the bran, which is the fiber-rich layer and gives the rice its brown colour. The bran is exactly what is removed in the refining of rice and after that when it appears white.
We have become accustomed to having refined rice as it takes less time to cook, it is usually served soft and we love its taste. But if we want our health to be taken care of, then the bran layer is essential: The fiber in it helps in lowering the overall glycemic index of this cereal., The glycemic index marks the degree to which there is an increase in blood sugar after the consumption of a food; Foods with a high glycemic index are associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes.
from rice to sugar
Both white bread and white rice have been in the headlines of nutritionists over the years due to their high glycemic index and hence, their relationship with them. Diabetes, but also obesity and its associated diseases. Now, a study published in the scientific journal British Medical Journal (BMJ) reaffirmed the relationship between the habitual consumption of white rice and this disease. This is a review of the results of a total of 19 studies regarding this problem.
“White rice consumption is associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes,” summarizes the study in its Findings section. For rice lovers, however, it leaves a window of hope open: “For its part, Brown rice has been linked to a lower risk of contracting the disease., In other words, as with the consumption of bread or pasta, we should choose whole grain alternatives found in supermarkets over white options.
[El médico que conquistó Harvard con la dieta mediterránea: “El pan blanco es un gran problema en España]
White rice raises blood sugar levels so high and so rapidly that it has a high starch content. Miguel ngel Martínez González, Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Navarra, explains in his book What is healthy food? (Planet, 2020) that Our body has the ability to easily convert starch into sugar. And this substance is responsible for spikes in blood sugar that increase the risk of diabetes.
more profit
In this sense, the added fiber content of brown rice means that its starches are absorbed more slowly and thus, glucose enters our bloodstream in a more sustained manner over time. This slow process has several health benefits: first, The pancreas does not overwork itself and the risk of type 2 diabetes is reduced., There is also a more stable supply of energy; And, finally, constant blood sugar prevents the feeling of hunger from reappearing too soon.
[Este es el arroz del supermercado que recomiendan los nutricionistas]
In any case, switching to whole grain products not only has the benefit of reducing diabetes risk. Brown rice has a higher proportion of protein in its composition – although being of vegetable origin, They do not contain all the essential amino acids and should be supplemented with legumes-, The fact that brown rice has more fiber, a lower glycemic index, and more protein makes it a more satiating food than white rice.
That is, brown rice helps us to lose weight because it prevents us from overeating because it removes it to a great extent. Of course, in terms of calories per 100 grams, white and brown rice don’t show much of a difference. It is a common mistake to think that bread, pasta or brown rice is low in fat. Or associate them with a diet to lose weight. Now, the fact that it has calories doesn’t mean that brown rice is healthy: In its proper measure it is an optimal food for a healthy diet.

UPS Launches A Metaverse Location In Decentraland – NFTevening.com https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/ups-launches-a-metaverse-location-in-decentraland-nftevening-com/
UPS, one of the world’s biggest shipping and parcel supply services, is joining the metaverse. The multinational company has launched a venue in Decentraland and aims to target small businesses in the virtual world. Significantly, they will use this space for events and educational purposes. The Helping You Be Unstoppable Store was built in partnership with companies Inc. and Fast Company.
UPS is joining the metaverse with an event venue in Decentraland.
UPS launches virtual metaverse space
In April, the United Parcel Service (UPS) filed a trademark to protect its brand in the metaverse and NFT space. Now, the company is finally entering the metaverse and launching a unique venue, offering education for the small business market in key areas, such as sales and marketing.
Significantly, The Helping You Be Unstoppable Store will not offer one-to-one interaction with UPS staff at this moment.
In the future, there could be a UPS service within the metaverse, allowing you to post items without having to leave Decentraland. Of course, much of this depends on the overall success of the metaverse in general. Still, it is great to see big brands joining, embracing, and productively using the space.
This move by UPS is the latest in a line of iconic web2 companies moving into web3. Last week, Disney announced it is hiring metaverse and web3 lawyers as it expands its plans for web3.
Education at the heart of Metaverse space
UPS wants to help small companies, focusing primarily on this for the metaverse space. The events taking place at the new decentraland venue will include some brilliant speakers.
Notably, these experts will provide excellent talks on essential aspects of running a business. The UPS team has been working hard on this latest venture, aiming to provide an immersive and dynamic learning experience.
Thanks to the metaverse, it is a unique opportunity to learn from small business experts worldwide without leaving your sofa!

Opening statements and trial testimony started Monday for Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes and other members of the extremist group who face seditious conspiracy and other charges in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Rhodes and four co-defendants — Kelly Meggs, Kenneth Harrelson, Jessica Watkins and Thomas Caldwell — have pleaded not guilty to felony charges alleging that they conspired for weeks after the 2020 presidential election to unleash political violence to oppose the lawful transfer of power to Joe Biden.
The defendants came from Texas, Florida, Ohio and Virginia, and allegedly led a group that traveled to Washington and staged firearms nearby before forcing entry through the Capitol Rotunda doors in combat and tactical gear.
Day 2 of testimony in the Oath Keepers trial will resume Tuesday

The Washington Post’s live coverage of opening statements and the first day of testimony in the seditious conspiracy trial of Stewart Rhodes and other Oath Keepers affiliates has ended for today.
Read a recap of Monday’s coverage here.
Stewart Rhodes messaged Roger Stone on Nov. 7, 2020: ‘We need to roll’
Return to menu
On the day news networks declared Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 election, Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes sent a message to a group chat that included longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone.
“What’s the plan?” he asked. “We need to roll.” He added, “I’m on my way to DC Right now, with my Oath Keepers tactical leaders for a possible DC op, to do a leaders recon and make plans. I’m available to meet face to face.”
He also shared a video comparing the U.S. election in 2020 to the election of Serbian dictator Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, with advice for those contesting the results. One of the points Rhodes highlighted was, “We swarmed the streets and started confronting the opponents.” Another: “We stormed the Parliament.”
Rhodes discussed resisting election results within hours, messages show
Return to menu
The first witness in the Oath Keepers trial, FBI Special Agent Michael Palian, displayed a number of messages sent by the group’s leader, Stewart Rhodes, to other people beginning early on Nov. 4, 2020, urging them to resist the result of the presidential election. He said “the left, including the Democratic Party … seek our destruction. We must defeat them. … Even if one of them occupies the White House.”
Palian said the FBI extracted numerous messages from Rhodes’s phone that he sent on Signal, an encrypted messaging app. The government is attempting to show that Rhodes began plotting for Jan. 6, 2021, within hours of the election ending on Nov. 3, 2020, even though no one had called the result of the election then. Some of the messages have not previously been made public.
These 7 Oath Keepers have pleaded guilty to Jan. 6 conspiracy charges
Return to menu
Three Oath Keepers members have already pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy, and four others to conspiring to obstruct Congress’s confirmation of the presidential vote on Jan. 6, 2021.
Joshua James, 34, of Arab, Ala., and Brian Ullrich, 44, of Guyton, Ga., were charged with seditious conspiracy with Stewart Rhodes. William Todd Wilson, 45, of Newton Grove, N.C., was charged separately. All are cooperating with U.S. prosecutors.
In plea papers, James said that Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes “instructed [him] and others to be prepared and called upon to … use lethal force if necessary” to keep Trump in office. After Jan. 6, James said he spent several weeks with Rhodes in Texas, where he said they gathered weapons, burner phones and tactical gear, then returned to Alabama where he “awaited Rhodes’s instructions,” according to his plea.
FBI agent investigating Oath Keepers guarded crying senators on Jan. 6

On Jan. 6, 2021, FBI special agent Michael Palian was working from home on a health-care fraud squad, he testified as the first witness at the trial of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and four others.
Palian was called to the Capitol at 3:30 p.m. that day and was eventually asked to go to the undisclosed location nearby where U.S. senators had relocated.
“It was chaotic,” he said. The senators were in “shock,” he said, and some were crying. At 7:30 p.m., he and about 70 other FBI agents walked the senators back to the Capitol building and into the Senate chamber.
Two defendants defer opening statements; testimony to start
Return to menu
After attorneys for Stewart Rhodes, Thomas Caldwell and Jessica Watkins made their opening statements Monday, attorneys for two defendants — Kelly Meggs and Kenneth Harrelson — chose to defer their case introductions to the jury. So prosecutors are now readying their first witness of the trial.
Defense lawyers have the option of giving their opening statement immediately after the prosecution has given its statement, or at the outset of the defense case. Defense lawyers are of varying opinions on whether to lay out the defense before the prosecutors start or after they’ve finished. Some believe it is best to get the defense side in before evidence is presented. Some believe it’s better to respond to that evidence after the jury has heard it.
Ohio bar owner was a ‘protest junkie’ just ‘there to help,’ lawyer says
Return to menu
The lawyer for Jessica Watkins, the Ohio bar owner who is accused of leading one of the assaults on the Capitol on Jan. 6, said she became involved with the Oath Keepers out of her compulsion to protect people and had no role in planning for any attack on the Capitol.
Watkins had served in the Army but was discharged early, then served as a firefighter, her attorney Jonathan Crisp said. She started the Ohio State Regular Militia, Crisp said, because “she was a protest junkie. She wanted to go to protests and help law enforcement. She was a medic, she was there to help. She followed protest to protest to protest, that was her thing.”
Who is Stewart Rhodes, what has he said about Jan. 6 and why does he wear an eye patch?
Return to menu
Would-be paramilitary commander or couch-surfing grifter? Stewart Rhodes has been described as both and more as he has risen to become one of the most visible leaders of the right-wing “Patriot/militia” movement.
A former Army paratrooper and Yale Law School graduate, Rhodes founded the Oath Keepers in 2009 with the what he said was the mission of preventing a “full-blown totalitarian dictatorship,” and drawn recruits from the military and law enforcement. In practice, analysts say, it is a collection of local chapters with a similar, disinformation-fueled ideology about what they view as the inevitable collapse of the U.S. government into tyranny.
Attorney for Virginia defendant points blame at FBI
Return to menu
The attorney for Thomas Caldwell, a 68-year-old Berryville, Va., defendant accused of organizing a “Quick Reaction Force” for the Oath Keepers on Jan. 6, used much of his opening statement to accuse the FBI of incompetence and overreach.
“It’s an absolute outrage,” David Fischer said. “I’m begging you to clear his name.”
Fischer said investigators “spared no expense” yet repeatedly fumbled. He said that they initially believed that Caldwell had gone into the building when he hadn’t, that they got his age and eye color wrong, and that they didn’t know he had actually briefly worked for the FBI. They thought he was a commander in the Oath Keepers because other associates called him that, but it was actually a reference to his military service, Fischer said.
Oath Keepers often staged armed ‘quick reaction forces’ outside rallies, lawyer says
Return to menu
As the lawyer for defendant Thomas E. Caldwell began his opening statement Monday, he said that the Oath Keepers regularly used “quick reaction forces” with multiple weapons as a contingency for rallies they protected in recent years.
The government has alleged that Caldwell, a Virginia resident, helped coordinate the gathering of guns and ammunition for a “quick reaction force” across the river from D.C., to be summoned as part of the effort to stop the congressional certification of the electoral college vote. Caldwell’s attorney, David Fischer, emphasized to the jury that, “the verb is to react, it’s not to act. Anybody who has served five seconds in the United States military knows that a quick reaction force or quick response team reacts to emergency situation. It’s a ‘break the glass in case of emergency’ group of people, typically EMTs or other medical personnel, to come in as a rescue unit. By definition a QRF would not be used to attack anything, including the United States Capitol.”
Why does Rhodes invoke Insurrection Act as defense for Jan. 6 planning?

Stewart Rhodes has pleaded not guilty to seditious conspiracy, saying his co-defendants’ planning and actions related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol were defensive, taken in anticipation of what they believed would be a lawful order from then President Donald Trump deputizing militias under the Insurrection Act to stop Joe Biden from becoming president.
But why is Rhodes using an obscure, rarely used statute designed to protect the country from insurrection allegedly to support an actual insurrection?

Will New Technology Stop Violence In Buffalo Schools? Experts Explain WIVB.com News 4
Will New Technology Stop Violence In Buffalo Schools? Experts Explain – WIVB.com – News 4 https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/will-new-technology-stop-violence-in-buffalo-schools-experts-explain-wivb-com-news-4/
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Buffalo Public Schools are trying to beef up security after recent acts of violence, but parents are still looking for progress.
Sources close to the district say metal detectors are coming to every BPS building soon, but some parents wonder if this new technology is enough to curb violence. Several parents said they were optimistic at the beginning of the school year. Just one week into the 2022-2023 year, a student stabbed another with a steak knife in the girls bathroom. The teenage suspect was arraigned on assault charges without bail.
“If you can prevent students from bringing a weapon into school, you make it a safer environment where students are less concerned about their safety and more interested in learning,” Jeff Rinaldo, partner at Vista Security Group, told News 4.
Safety in school is still top of mind for some parents. Several addressed security problems at the September Board of Education meeting. They criticized that students were being wanded inconsistently, despite new policy that requires all high school students to be wanded. After the incident in September, the district required secruity staff to wand students head to toe including under the feet. All students’ backpacks will be checked as well. Some parents say this strategy is not enough.
“I don’t see how its feasible to do it every day. What time do you expect the kids to go to their first class?” Edward Speidel, president of the District Parent Coordinating Council (DPCC), added.
Rinaldo says wanding is not a long term solution because there could be human error. He says new screening systems that allow students to pass through sensors are a better option because they are more efficient and accurate.
“The newer technology out there allows you to screen faster and much more efficiently and has a better rate of not producing false alarms,” Rinaldo said.
The 2022-2025 BPS Strategic Plan says they are prioritizing safety, security and wellness. Part of their plan is to “purchase and have installed state-of-the-art metal detectors for all BPS schools.”
“We’re being told that there’s a good chance that that’s what we are going to get. There’s no definite yet. It’s coming down, but I don’t see this for 90 days or so,” Speidel said.
Buffalo Public Schools set aside more than$300,000 of American Rescue Plan and Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief money for security upgrades last year. From 2021 to 2024, $360,000 will be spent on security. Parent leaders say the district has the money to put new technology in every building.
“There was money put aside for those and we are holding them accountable for that. Hopefully it is coming through soon,” Speidel continued.
Rinaldo says the district has taken steps to increase security, but he says new technology will make the schools even safer.
“The new Superintendent is committed to making safety and security her top priority. She recognizes the fact that unless a student feels safe, learning cannot happen,” Rinaldo said.
Buffalo Public Schools declined to comment for this story. At the previous Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Tonja Williams said school security keeps her up at night and it remains her top priority.

Outdoors In The Sun: My How Time Flies Northside Sun
Outdoors In The Sun: ‘My How Time Flies’ – Northside Sun https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/outdoors-in-the-sun-my-how-time-flies-northside-sun/
I was almost late getting into my writing mode before packing for a long overdue break from the world. The ISS was scheduled to pass over our neighborhood, and many other neighborhoods for that matter, at 7:42 p.m. It came into view at 7:43 p.m. These delays in air travel create panic and distress even through space travel. If only our local airports were this timely. I am constantly amazed at how predictable and precise the timing is for “events” like viewing the high-speed vessel that did indeed pass over our home. My video didn’t even remotely do justice for the traveling space station. Orbiting the earth at an average altitude of 227 nautical miles (420 kilometers), the International Space Station (ISS) is Earth’s only microgravity laboratory that has allowed more than 3,600 researchers in 106 countries to conduct more than 2,500 experiments, and the research is still ongoing.
Traveling at around 17,500 miles per hour, the ISS orbits the Earth every 90 minutes. This provides the opportunity for crew members to witness 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets each day. I think this accurately describes the cliché, “my, how time flies.” I still struggle with the acceptance of how astronauts can stay on the “ship” for months at a time. If my research serves me correctly, I think the average mission length is about six months, but this can vary greatly depending on their mission. It is reported that Astronaut Scott Kelly holds the record for the longest single spaceflight at 340 days. I can’t even begin to conceive what this would be like to endure being in one place for this long. Granted, the station is about the size of a football field, but still. Do you know what I mean? Astronaut Peggy Whitson holds the record for the most cumulative days in space with 665 days taking top honors.
So, what in the world does one do for months at a time on the ISS? Of course, maintenance of the vessel is priority number one, but then scientific experiments are among the primary duties of the astronauts. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the research conducted. For example, advances have been made in saliva testing to detect active viruses which allows for faster, less-invasive testing protocols. Over 500 microgravity protein crystal-growth investigations have been conducted. This research aids in finding better treatments for cancers, muscular dystrophy, and other serious diseases. One study was conducted to understand how microgravity affects the growth of tomatoes. I still don’t understand why this research is conducted here, but maybe I’m not supposed to understand. Unless, perhaps, we are looking to discover the next land mass for expansion of our human population. I wonder if this is as far-fetched as the initial search Christopher Columbus conducted in 1492.
Going back to my opening statement about packing for a retreat, I knew it was time for us to take trip when I noticed the first spider lilies emerging from their yearlong dormancy. Did you see them? Where did you observe your first one? The reason I knew a trip was long overdue, because it was about this time last year when Stacey and I ventured into Maine in search of color and lobster rolls. That’s right, it has been a year since I have been able to catch my breath from either chasing down mosquitoes, suppressing weeds, managing crops, and a multitude of other outside endeavors. This seems ridiculous, but it’s the truth.
I began to compare my hectic lifestyle and the endeavors I embark upon daily and routinely to the lifestyle and routine of those in space. My office consists of thousands and thousands of acres of land that I pass by and through each day. The astronaut’s office, though only a few acres in size, still covers not thousands, but millions of acres of space each day. How daunting my day seems when I fill up my truck more than once in a day when hundreds of highway miles are traveled. I can only imagine the amount of energy it takes to keep the ISS moving.
Have you noticed the broomsedge beginning to show a hint of “blue?” Also known as bluestem, it’s that time of year when it begins to become very noticeable. It’s easy to detect during late fall and winter when the dried stems are so apparent. Now, however, you must know what you’re looking for to pick it up. Don’t worry, it’s everywhere. Just look for a plant about three feet tall exhibiting a pale shade of blue and voila, you’ve found it. It really is beautiful and another indicator that it’s time for a break.
Can you imagine having dinner on the space station? I wonder if the astronauts must use Velcro strips to anchor their rehydrated potato chips to their plates. Do they sleep while floating around in the cabin or strap themselves down? I don’t want to even think about using the restroom without the aid of gravity. Many days my lunch is served on the tailgate of the truck under a lone oak that was left as either a property line or an obstacle to be avoided by a crop duster. I never have to worry about the juice from a can of sardines “floating” into my nostrils. Granted, there are many times when the juice is absorbed by my cotton-stained khakis, but again, it’s hard to imagine sardines “floating” by.
The recent blooming of a multitude of species of goldenrod was another recent indicator that a vacation was in order. The precursor to fall, as I have mentioned numerous times, can be indicated by the change in the species now blooming. It can be described as a sea of gold when the genus Solidago, reaches the height of its fury when peak bloom is achieved. I wonder, again, if the crew orbiting many miles above can witness the entire spectacle through powerful telescopes.
I tried to put myself in the position of the researchers in space for six months. What six months would I pick to orbit Mother Earth? If I chose spring and summer, I would miss the gobble of the wild turkey, the first homegrown tomato sandwich, and the rhythmic cadence of the katydid. I don’t believe I could take that. However, if I chose fall and winter to travel in space, the annual dove hunt would take place without me. The first frost would singe the landscape as always, but I wouldn’t be here to feel the sting on my cheeks. The final straw would be missing the whistling wings above the timber from migrating mallards and the subtle grunt of a rutting whitetail.
On second thought, as hectic as my schedule is and how overdue I think I am for a break, at least for now I will remain in my boring lifestyle and continue to endure. I’m glad there are those with the ambition to orbit the world and find alternatives for medicine and technology, but alas, it’s not for me. To be fair though, the astronauts may not embrace the thought of stepping on a hidden cottonmouth in a cotton field, nor would a lap full of sardines be their idea of a delicious lunch. All of us have our niches and when you get down to it, most of us wouldn’t trade where we are in our lives. As my friend Ford always says, “that’s why Baskin Robbins has 31 flavors.” Think about where you are in your life. Do you need a break? Have you noticed the persimmons beginning to ripen? Mark the location of the spider lilies now in case you would like to transplant some this winter to your backyard. The world is a giant place, and come to think of it, I’m pretty satisfied right where I am in it. Are you? Until next time enjoy our woods and waters and remember, let’s leave it better than we found it.
