EPCOT At 40: A Look Back, Forward, And Behind The Construction Walls – Roadtrippers Magazine https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/epcot-at-40-a-look-back-forward-and-behind-the-construction-walls-roadtrippers-magazine/
October 1, 2022, marked the 40th anniversary of the opening of EPCOT, Disney’s second theme park in Central Florida. This anniversary comes during a broader celebration of the Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th anniversary and, as such, the recognition of EPCOT’s milestone has been met with little fanfare. But the history of EPCOT is a storied one, dating back to the 1960s when Walt Disney first shared his dreams of creating a futuristic community designed to showcase ingenuity and imagination.
EPCOT’s name was meant to serve as an acronym for the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow, but when Disney died in 1966, his ambitious project ultimately took a turn, becoming a traditional theme park with exploratory experiences designed to “edutain” audiences.
Biking around Celebration, Florida, Walt Disney’s idealized planned community
For most of its existence, the park has had two sections: A Future World delving into topics such as technology, transportation, agriculture, and energy; and World Showcase, a world nations exposition offering a chance to explore the architecture, culture, and cuisine of a variety of countries.
As a teen visiting Walt Disney World on a family vacation in the ’90s, I was immediately enamored with the concept of cultural exploration. While I yearned to jet off to far-flung destinations someday, EPCOT’s sense of faux world travel appealed to my wanderlust. In college I was drawn to EPCOT again, working at the park’s Journey Into Imagination attraction (now the Imagination! pavilion). While the park was no longer striving to be an experimental society, it was here that I found a community of coworkers who became fast friends.

Festivals and construction zones
Though EPCOT has changed in the 25 years since I first moved to Florida, it continues to be a special place, luring me back for regular visits. As the fourth-most-visited theme park in North America, it’s proven to be a favorite of many, largely due to the many successful seasonal festivals, which are a steady draw, especially for the 21-and-over crowd.
The most popular of these is the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, which takes visitors on a culinary and booze-laden journey through six continents. Those interested in this year’s event should plan a visit any time before November 19. The park’s holiday event kicks off on November 25, followed by an art festival throughout January and February, which leads into a colorful, months-long flower fest that begins each March.
How to celebrate the holidays—and avoid the crowds—at Walt Disney World in Florida
Beyond the festivals, those who come to EPCOT today are greeted with signs of a work in progress. Before the pandemic, Disney announced a massive overhaul project that promised new attractions, shows, theming, and dedicated spaces for seasonal entertainment offerings. The COVID-19 pandemic brought much of this effort to a halt, prolonging the building already in progress, and shelving some planned developments indefinitely. Though work has slowly trudged on over the past few years, construction walls have become so prevalent within EPCOT that it’s been dubbed “Wall-cot” by fans and critics alike.
While walls remain in place throughout several areas, many others have come down with the opening of recent additions such as the Space 220 Restaurant, which impressively simulates dining inside a space station, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, a family-friendly ride located in the park’s France pavilion.
EPCOT’s newest attraction is a unique reverse-launch Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster with cars that rotate 360 dizzying degrees. This ride has proven so popular that the only way to ride it is to secure a coveted spot in an online virtual queue, which fills up quickly each morning.
Disneyland’s latest experiences challenge your senses and mess with your head
Where progress meets the past
Though the status of many of the park’s paused projects remains unclear, Disney has continued to share details about some of what remains hidden behind those pesky construction walls, including the park’s reimagining from two themed lands to four: World Celebration, World Discovery, World Nature, and World Showcase.
One of these lands, World Celebration, is currently scheduled for completion in late 2023, providing new green space and a statue dedicated to Disney, the man who started it all. The park’s World Nature land is also taking shape, with a Moana-themed walking trail peppered with playful water-based experiences, also scheduled to open in 2023. A new nighttime show in World Showcase that celebrates the Disney company’s 100th anniversary in 2023 is in development as well.
“EPCOT will always be in a state of becoming. It will never cease to be a living blueprint of the future.”
– Walt Disney
But ask a die-hard EPCOT fan what they’re most excited to see in the year ahead, and their answer may surprise you. While many of the park’s flashy new additions capitalize on Disney’s popular intellectual property, bringing beloved characters to life in new ways, there’s one character whose appeal has continued to grow these past 40 years—and you can only find him at EPCOT.
Fans of Figment
Figment, an ever-youthful purple dragon, is the star of the Imagination! pavilion I worked at back in college, and while his signature ride has evolved throughout the years, Figment’s fans return time and time again to sing along to the attraction’s catchy “One Little Spark” song, coo over his holiday sweater each winter, and don everything from t-shirts to custom-made dresses and Mickey-shaped ears bearing his likeness.
Figment’s lasting allure to generations of park goers is so strong that sales of limited-time Figment-shaped popcorn buckets famously drew 8-hour-long waits earlier this year. So, when company officials announced at the D23 Expo fan event that Figment character meet-and-greets would be coming to the park in late 2023, Disney fan sites lit up with enthusiasm.
The ultimate guide to Walt Disney World Resort
It’s the longstanding appeal of Figment and other edutaining mainstays of EPCOT, mixed with the park’s future-facing experiences and crowd-generating social festivals, that give this destination an unconventional sense of community. In a time when many people are stuck between nostalgia and a tomorrow that leans heavily on technology and a redefined sense of “togetherness,” EPCOT manages to deliver something for those looking forward, as well as those yearning to hold onto the past.
Though the world today is unlike anything Disney could have imagined in his lifetime, EPCOT unexpectedly fulfills his promise of serving as a communal gathering place that’s constantly in a state of “becoming.”

Ukraine Says Russians Shell Evacuation Convoy, Killing 20 | Business News | Wfmz.com – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/ukraine-says-russians-shell-evacuation-convoy-killing-20-business-news-wfmz-com-69news-wfmz-tv/
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A senior Ukrainian official says Russian forces on Saturday shelled a civilian evacuation convoy in the country’s northeast, killing 20 people. Bombardments have intensified as Moscow illegally annexed a swath of Ukrainian territory in a sharp escalation of the war.
Kharkiv region Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said the convoy was struck in the Kupiansy district, calling the attack on people who were trying to flee the area to avoid being shelled “сruelty that can’t be justified.”
Russian forces have not acknowledged or commented on the attack, apparently the second in two days to hit a humanitarian convoy. Russian troops have retreated from much of the Kharkiv region after a successful Ukrainian counteroffensive last month but continued to shell the area.
The attack comes at a pivotal moment in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war. Facing a Ukrainian counteroffensive, Putin this week heightened threats of nuclear force and used his most aggressive, anti-Western rhetoric to date.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his military vowed to keep fighting to liberate the annexed regions and other Russian-occupied areas.
Ukrainian officials said Saturday that their forces had surrounded thousands of Russian forces holding the strategic eastern city of Lyman, which is located in one of the four incorporated areas. Zelenskyy formally applied Friday for Ukraine to join NATO, increasing pressure on Western allies to help defend the country.
Also Saturday Ukraine’s nuclear power provider said that Russian forces blindfolded and detained the head of Europe’s largest nuclear plant. It appeared to be an attempt to secure Moscow’s hold on the newly annexed territory.
Russian forces seized the director-general of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Ihor Murashov, around 4 p.m. Friday, Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom said. That was just hours after Putin signed treaties to absorb Moscow-controlled Ukrainian territory into Russia, including the area around the nuclear plant.
Energoatom said Russian troops stopped Murashov’s car, blindfolded him and then took him to an undisclosed location.
Russia did not immediately acknowledge seizing the plant director. The International Atomic Energy Agency, which has staff at the plant, said it was aware of the reports of Murashov’s capture, and had contacted Russian authorities for clarification on what happened.
“His detention by (Russia) jeopardizes the safety of Ukraine and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” said Energoatom President Petro Kotin said, demanding the director’s immediate release.
The power plant repeatedly has been caught in the crossfire of the war in Ukraine. Ukrainian technicians continued running it after Russian troops seized the power station, and its last reactor was shut down in September as a precautionary measure amid ongoing shelling nearby.
Amid growing international sanctions and condemnation of Russia, a Ukrainian counteroffensive that has embarrassed the Kremlin appeared on the verge of retaking more ground.
A Ukrainian official said Saturday that the Russian-occupied city of Lyman was surrounded, with some 5,000 Russian forces trapped there. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai claimed that all routes to resupply Russian forces in Lyman were blocked.
“The occupiers asked their leadership for the opportunity to leave, which they refused,” Haidai said in a television interview. “Now they have three options: to try to break through, to surrender or to die together.”
His claims could not immediately be verified. Russia has not confirmed its forces were cut off, and Russian analysts had said Moscow was sending more troops to the area.
The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said Ukraine likely will retake Lyman in the coming days.
Citing Russian reports, the institute said it appeared Russian forces were retreating from Lyman, some 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. That corresponds to online videos purportedly showing some Russian forces falling back as a Ukrainian soldier said they had reached Lyman’s outskirts.
It said Ukraine also was making “incremental” gains around Kupiansk and the eastern bank of the Oskil River, which became a key front line since the Ukrainian counteroffensive regained control of the Kharkiv region in September.
The Russian army struck the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv twice overnight, once with drones and the second time with missiles, according to regional Gov. Vitaliy Kim. The first attack was conducted with Iranian Shahed-136 kamikaze drones and the second with S-300 missiles, he said on Telegram.
One of the rockets hit a five-story apartment building in the city center, while windows of the surrounding houses were blown out. In another part of the city, a private house and a two-story residential building suffered extensive damage. Five people were injured, including a 3-month-old baby, Kim said.
In its heaviest barrage in weeks, Russia’s military on Friday pounded Ukrainian cities with missiles, rockets and suicide drones, with one strike in the Zaporizhzhia region’s capital killing 30 and wounding 88.
In a daily intelligence briefing Saturday, the British Defense Ministry said the Russians “almost certainly” struck a humanitarian convoy there with S-300 anti-aircraft missiles. Russia is increasingly using anti-aircraft missiles to conduct attacks on the ground likely due to a lack of munitions, the British military said.
“Russia is expending strategically valuable military assets in attempts to achieve tactical advantage and in the process is killing civilians it now claims are its own citizens,” it said.
The attack came while Putin was preparing to sign the annexation treaties, which included the Zaporizhzhia region. Russian-installed officials in Zaporizhzhia blamed Ukrainian forces, but gave no evidence.
Russia now claims sovereignty over 15% of Ukraine, in what NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called “the largest attempted annexation of European territory by force since the Second World War.” The NATO chief was meeting Saturday with Denmark’s prime minister amid investigations into explosions on Russian pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

No. 5 Clemson’s home game against 10th-ranked NC State is something of a final entry in their series.
While the Tigers and Wolfpack doubtless will play again — they’re scheduled to meet in 2023 — the ACC’s decision to go with a 3-5-5 scheduling model in lieu of divisions beginning next season makes this their last meeting as ACC Atlantic foes.
Of course, there’s more to this game — and more on the line — than a final victory as divisional opponents. Clemson is aiming to return to the College Football Playoff after missing out in 2021 for the first time since 2014. The Tigers went 10-3 last season, with one of the losses coming to the Wolfpack.
The Tigers have the talent to make it back this season, starting with quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. The junior signal-caller overcame a stretch of difficulties last season and early this year to throw 10 touchdowns to one interception this season, including five scores in a 51-45 double-overtime victory over Wake Forest.

NC State is looking for its first 5-0 start since 2018. It’s also looking to beat Clemson for two years running for the first time since 2002-03. Like Clemson, the Wolfpack’s offense starts with their quarterback: Devin Leary, who has completed 80 of 125 passes (64 percent) for 890 yards and nine touchdowns to two interceptions.
It’s setting up for a fascinating quarterback battle and positioning in the ACC Atlantic. With that, The Sporting News breaks down how you can watch the Clemson-NC State battle:

Telefónica Metaverse Day: Telco Embraces The Web3 Revolution TelcoTitans
Telefónica Metaverse Day: Telco Embraces The Web3 Revolution – TelcoTitans https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/telefonica-metaverse-day-telco-embraces-the-web3-revolution-telcotitans/
Telefónica announced an array of partnerships and innovations as it continues to assert itself as a leader on metaverse and extended reality.
Chema Alonso, Telefónica’s Chief Digital Officer, kicked off the operator’s Metaverse Day on Thursday, placing the emergence of the metaverse within the context of another, coming internet revolution. This revolution is manifesting itself through Web3, an iteration of the web with artificial intelligence services, decentralised token economies and built-in cybersecurity. Alonso framed Web3 within a “tsunami of technologies” which he believes will enable the metaverse. Telefónica characterised such technologies as a gateway to a cognitive interface, or AI with a human parity.
Unprecedented challenges on the horizon
Irene Bernal, the telco’s Connectivity Innovation Director, also took to the stage to discuss Web3 as a platform. There is no single definition for the metaverse, but Telefónica described it as a “real‑time, virtual, alternative 3D world”. The event was centred around a shift from interactive to immersive experiences, and device computing to spatial computing — not only for gaming, but also for commerce, communications, and education.
Bernal was clear that the challenges in exacting this transformation will be “unprecedented”. To demonstrate the monumental challenge to providing XR experiences in real time, she noted that, based on today’s speeds, the Microsoft Flight Simulator would take 300 years to download its 2.5PB of data. Over the next ten years, Telefónica projects data traffic will increase by 20 times, requiring 1,000 times the current computing power at the world’s disposal.
Telefónica was upfront about such growth requiring a large‑scale transformation of the telco industry, but sees this as possible through Web3. For instance, edge computing will be key for the metaverse in order to reduce the distance between users and data processing, which will combine with 5G and Wi‑Fi 6 networks to reduce latency. Alonso re‑entered the fray to explain how Telefónica aims to achieve real‑time digitisation in collaboration with Facebook parent Meta through the likes of network slicing and adapting software‑defined networking (SDN) to specific use‑cases.
A flurry of strategic partnerships
In order to help bring about the metaverse, Telefónica introduced its Metaverse Partnership Framework, setting out three key areas: XR devices; XR engines; and XR experiences.
On XR devices, the telco is continuing to develop solutions alongside Meta, confirming the addition of the latter’s MetaQuest2 headset to its catalogue. Additionally, Hugo Swart, Vice‑President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm, made an appearance to provide further details on its partnership with Telefónica. Swart sought to position Qualcomm as the “ticket to the metaverse”, explaining how its Snapdragon Spaces platform will enable developers to create experiences with AR SDK as a plug‑in for 3D engines.
The discussion of XR engines resulted in the announcement of two new partners by Daniel Hernandez, Telefónica’s VP Devices & Consumer IoT. The first was a strategic partnership with cross‑platform game engine developer Unity Technologies on application planning interfaces, gaming experiences, and network‑as-a‑service innovation. Unity is one of the most widely used engines and has acted as the basis for VR experiences since their inception. The second strategic partnership announced was with US software developer Niantic, the creator of Pokémon Go. The pair will collaborate on network, visual connection systems, and delivering exclusive user experiences to Telefónica’s customers.
Finally, on the experiences front, there was one more significant declaration. Telefónica announced the acquisition of Zaragoza-based metaverse firm Imascono. The acquisition reflects Telefónica’s desire to support domestic development of XR technologies in Spain, as well as support the gamification of educational experiences. The duo has a history of collaboration reaching as far back as 2015, including cooperation on the security joint venture Movistar Prosegur Alarmas as well as applications focused on bringing metaverse functionality to homes across Spain in real time. Hernandez confessed that he was formerly a sceptic of AR and the metaverse, but with confidence declared “forget this idea that it’s not going to happen!”, and asserted that one‑in‑four consumers will seek immersive experiences by 2026.
Prior to the metaverse’s fully fledged launch for consumers, Telefónica has been shaping its own virtual space through Horizon Worlds, a social platform developed in tandem with Meta. The VR ecosystem enables users to interact with their avatars, and the technology is already in use internally for events and meetings. The telco will also join forces with Microsoft on its AltSpaceVR platform to enable customers and workers to interact and witness talks in a virtual edition of its Innovation Hub.
Tokenomics: Not in an era of change, but a change of era
Alonso went on to use the event to discuss the centrality of Web3 economies and “tokenomics” to commercial aspects of the metaverse. ‘Tokenomics’ is concerned with the use of blockchain services such as non‑fungible tokens. Alonso explained that tokens can be used to access a service and, with the growth of the service, the value of the relevant token will organically rise. NFTs have already sparked the interest of some investors globally, with The New York Times reporting that venture capital invested in cryptocurrency providers had risen in the previous year. Telefónica sees blockchain and crypto growing further with the roll out of metaverse commerce, with the telco’s Executive President José María Álvarez‑Pallete stating that “we are not in an era of change. We are in a change of era”. The telco is to work with tokenomics firm Bit2Me to allow consumers to pay for devices and services through a wallet system using digital assets.
Of course, the elephant in the room for XR and the metaverse is the challenge associated with creating a world with seemingly infinite capabilities. Telefónica told attendees that it was aware that with no regulation for new decentralised economies, protection of health standards, or regulation of user behaviour, the metaverse could be a negative force. On top of this, the network and technological growth required will have to be achieved in line with pledges from Telefónica to achieve net‑zero emissions by 2040. Despite a host of challenges, the telco envisions XR 5G will come to market in about five years’ time, and 6G capabilities integrated during the 2030s.

3 Big Crypto Predictions For October 2022 – BeInCrypto https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/3-big-crypto-predictions-for-october-2022-beincrypto/
With another month of Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and most altcoins in red or in a rangebound trajectory all eyes are hoping for greener price charts for top cryptos in the last quarter.
“Wake me up when September ends,” was the predominant sentiment for a majority of cryptocurrency HODLers over the last month. As macro conditions continued to dictate the short-term path for cryptocurrencies, bearish sentiment took over the larger market.
Throughout September, bearish opinions gained much more heat as seen in the red bars below representing how many mentions there are of sell, selling, sold, or bearish.

Decreased demand
The total fees spent to use a blockchain presents the willingness to spend and demand to use it. Over the last quarter, Bitcoin fees generated just under $30 million from the network, declining from $42.9 million in Q2 2022.
On the other hand, Ethereum fees dropped even further, from $1.29 billion in Q2 to $264 million in Q3 charting a 79% fall quarter over quarter (q-o-q).
While there was a decrease in blockchain demand, prices held relatively well with Bitcoin in consolidation and Ether appreciating by 30% q-o-q.
Additionally, net flows indicated that while BTC saw a neutral sentiment, ETH saw a more bullish stance as compared to BTC. Bitcoin recorded modest inflows into centralized exchanges of under $50 million, higher than the $192 million net outflows from Q2.
For Ether, over $1 billion ETH left exchanges for the fourth straight quarter, while outflows in Q3 were $57 million lower than those from Q2.
3 things to remember in October
Bitcoin’s price has struggled to keep up with the psychological support barrier of $20,000 throughout September. Without a good pump from whales and retailers, a significant uptick in price seems like a distant dream.
Whale metrics from Santiment presented that there is neither whale accumulation nor major utility in BTC to be excited about at press time.
The key-tier BTC whales who hold between 100 and 10,000 BTC are continuing to dump. Over the past year, these key addresses have dropped 3.5% of the supply to addresses that have much less impact on future price movement. In September alone, another 0.4% of BTC’s supply was dumped. In October a key trend to watch out for is would-be whale accumulation.
The amount of unique BTC moving from address to address remains scarce, which has led the NVT signal to present a bearish signal for a second straight month. An uptick in the same could prove to be a bullish indicator.
A look at BTC funding rates presented another worrying trend where traders are longing gradually more and more when the price doesn’t dump. After the longs get high enough, another dump takes place, traders attempt to short temporarily, and they then give up and begin to long again.
Thus, going forward watching the aforementioned key indicators could be crucial. A reversal in these on-chain metrics could present a bullish turn for BTC, ETH, and the larger market.

U.S. Grapples With Risk Of Nuclear War Over Ukraine Axios
U.S. Grapples With Risk Of Nuclear War Over Ukraine – Axios https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-grapples-with-risk-of-nuclear-war-over-ukraine-axios/
The U.S. and its NATO allies are urgently grappling with a question that once seemed to have faded along with the Cold War: Will Moscow go nuclear?
The big picture: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s nuclear threats are growing more direct as his battlefield position in Ukraine grows more precarious.
After warning last week that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons, Putin added: “This is not a bluff.”
National Security adviser Jake Sullivan conceded Friday that it might well not be. “There is a risk, given all the loose talk and the nuclear saber-rattling by Putin, that he would consider this,” he said.
Sullivan said the White House had informed the Kremlin of the “decisive” action the U.S. would take if Putin follows through.
Driving the news: Sullivan was responding to an address in which Putin confirmed Russia was extending its nuclear umbrella to four newly annexed territories of Ukraine.
Putin also said the U.S. had itself “set a precedent” for the use of nuclear weapons when it bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Between the lines: Putin seems to believe that if he can convince the U.S. and its NATO allies that he’s willing to use nuclear weapons over Ukraine, they will pressure Kyiv to surrender, says Alexander Gabuev of the Carnegie Endowment.
The problem for Putin is the Ukrainian government, military and public believe they’re on course for victory, and won’t be deterred by nuclear threats, Gabuev says. The U.S., meanwhile, is only increasing its arms shipments to Ukraine.
But if Ukraine continues to re-take territory Putin has now claimed is part of Russia, he may believe his only option is escalation. Putin’s recent moves suggest he “views this war as existential for himself, for his personal survival maybe, for his legacy and for his country,” Gabuev says.
Yes, but: We’re not yet at the top of the “escalation ladder,” Gabuev notes.
Putin could knock out electricity to major Ukrainian cities, conduct air and missile strikes on particularly sensitive targets, or even use chemical weapons on the battlefield before he reaches for the world’s largest nuclear arsenal.
But Gabuev believes in the last two weeks, the chances of a nuclear strike moved from “single digits” to “double digits.”
If Putin does use nuclear weapons, he could seek a “demonstration effect” — perhaps by detonating a nuclear weapon over the Black Sea or in the Arctic — or deploy a smaller-yield “tactical” nuclear weapon on the battlefield, says Andrea Kendall-Taylor of the Center for a New American Security.
The U.S. would not likely go nuclear in response, but it could conduct a conventional military strike on Russian soil — perhaps targeting the site or unit behind the Russian launch — and pursue non-military steps like permanently seizing Russian central bank reserves, Kendall-Taylor says.
Rose Gottemoeller, the former Deputy Secretary General of NATO, would expect a “strong non-nuclear” military response, as well as major diplomatic costs for Putin. “He will lose the global south, which for him should be a great shame because he’s been very clever at keeping them on his side,” she tells Axios.
Sullivan said the U.S. had privately made clear to the Russians what its responses would be, but “we’re not going to telegraph these things publicly.” The administration would certainly seek to rally global consequences and condemnation, including from fence-sitting countries like China and India.
Retired general Ben Hodges, who commanded U.S. forces in Europe, has said if Russia conducts a nuclear attack in Ukraine, the U.S. could destroy Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. However, that would risk a Russian counterstrike and potentially all-out war.
What to watch: The battering Russia’s military is taking in Ukraine could contribute to further nuclear standoffs, even after the war, Kendall-Taylor says.
“The more degraded and vulnerable they are in conventional terms, the more they’re going to double down on non-conventional things” like nuclear weapons.

Pontotoc Technology Center Opens New Industrial Training Center | Local News | Theadanews.com – Theadanews https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/pontotoc-technology-center-opens-new-industrial-training-center-local-news-theadanews-com-theadanews/
Pontotoc Technology Center recently hosted a luncheon marking the grand-opening of their new 14,000 square-foot Industrial Training Center.
“Having an industrial building that allows us to have full-time programs like our HVAC system is beneficial,” Pontotoc Technology Center Superintendent Travis Graham said. “We’re able to expand and have more resources, and be able to facilitate any needs as the industry changes; this building is going to be able to change with it.”
“We’re very glad to have it,” retired PTC Superintendent David Lassiter said.
“Having a nighttime facility for our other businesses to use for their additional training,” Graham added, “allows us to be more flexible, with whatever space is needed, or whatever electricity is needed. This allows us to adapt and change as the industry and our community changes.”
The facility is a combination of industrial workspace and classrooms.
“We look forward to using it,” Graham said.

Europe Travel: In Cyprus An Extended Summer And A Few Surprise Visitors Forbes
Europe Travel: In Cyprus, An Extended Summer — And A Few Surprise Visitors – Forbes https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/europe-travel-in-cyprus-an-extended-summer-and-a-few-surprise-visitors-forbes/
Christopher Elliott
In the seaside resort of Larnaca, Cyprus, the European summer travel season goes on — and that suits everyone there just fine.
With temperatures in the high 80s and a cooling breeze from the Mediterranean, visitors from Germany, the U.K. and Russia are trying to squeeze in one last beach vacation before winter.
It’s already rainy and cold in Scandinavia and other parts of northern Europe, where fall is in full swing. Cyprus is one of Europe’s last warm-weather holdouts. Not surprisingly, that has extended the tourist season here, too.
“Visitors from Northern Europe prefer late summer and early fall because it isn’t as hot here,” says Sophia Charalambous, a market development officer for Visit Cyprus. “So this October is high season here.”
Where is Cyprus located?
Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean. It’s about 80 miles south of the Turkish coast and west of Syria and Lebanon. A member of the European Union, it is famous for wreck diving, dessert wine and artisan traditions like needlepoint lace and basket weaving.
The somewhat central location of Cyprus — between Europe and the Middle East — makes it a favorite destination of Europeans, Israelis and Russians. It’s a curious meeting point, but the road signs tell the story. In Larnaca, near historic St. Lazarus Church, you can see signs in Greek, English and Russian. The receptionists at the Opera Hotel on the main square easily switch among the three languages, depending on the guest.
As an American in Cyprus, I felt a little uneasy at first about sharing a resort with so many Russians. But as one local explained to me, the eastern Europeans, including the Russians, Bulgarians and Poles, come here to escape politics. And, as it turned out, all of the Russians I met were exceptionally friendly. After all, they were on vacation — or maybe dodging conscription.
Is it safe to travel to Cyprus?
Cyprus is relatively safe. COVID cases remain low and there are no vaccine requirements for entry. The Department of State classifies Cyprus as a “1,” which means you should exercise normal precautions. The most prominent government warning is to use an authorized crossing point when entering the Turkish side of the island and not to take pictures of any border crossings.
But “safe” is a relative term. If you live in Cyprus, you have to remember to avoid drinking the tapwater (it’s not safe, say locals) and, while I’m on the subject of bathrooms, never flush toilet paper. It clogs the antiquated pipes. For more information on travel safety, see my free guide on travel health and safety.
Tourism is back in Cyprus — kind of
Tourism to Cyprus took a hit during the pandemic, with visitors dropping dropping below 500,000 and then rebounding.
Visit Cyprus
This summer, Cyprus tourism authorities reported that revenue from tourism reached $382 million for the first half of the year, up 55 percent from a year before. Officials are hoping for a full recovery by 2023
Who should visit Cyprus?
Cyprus is not exactly on the map for most American visitors. Tourism officials say many Americans who come to Cyprus are exploring their cultural heritage. There are some special-interest tourists, too — those who are interested in the culinary scene or the island’s artisans. Cyprus also offers a lot for adventure-seekers. The wreck of the Zenobia, a ferry that sank on her maiden voyage in 1980, is a draw for scuba divers. Still, last year, fewer than 20,000 Americans came to Cyprus, making it one of the more undiscovered European destinations.
In Nicosia, there’s a more laid-back vibe than you find in other southern European destinations. Even Athens seems more high-strung — a word that’s not often used to describe Athens — in comparison to the Cypriot capital.
In the old town, tourists browse the antique shops and clothing stores. In the evening, they sip coffee and sit with their hookahs in one of the many cafes under the watchful gaze of the ever-present St. Helen cats.
Christopher Elliott
Cyprus is an ideal destination for travelers who lover history. The Cyprus Museum in downtown Nicosia is just a sampling of that history, with exhibits that take you from Neolithic artifacts to the early Bronze Age. At this time of year, there are few visitors and plenty of opportunities to linger and read every display.
There are fewer tourists in Nicosia, the capital, than in Larnaca. Most of the visitors I met were from Germany and the U.K, and many seemed to be on organized tours. You can easily hit the highlights of Nicosia in a day, including the museums and old town. But this city, and indeed this island, piques your curiosity. It is a place that doesn’t quite align with your perceptions. It is somewhere between Europe and the Middle East, and yet depending on where you are, it is also fiercely Greek or Turkish.
For visitors, Cyprus is a mystery that is begging to be explored.

Stocks end September down 9.3%, worst month since March 2020
Wall Street closed out a miserable September with a loss of 9.3%, the worst monthly decline since March 2020. The S&P 500 fell 1.5% Friday and is at its lowest level in almost two years. The benchmark index has lost ground for six of the last seven weeks and posted its third straight losing quarter. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1.7% and the Nasdaq fell 1.5%. Nike fell sharply after the company had to slash prices to clear inventories, while Carnival dropped following weaker-than-expected quarterly results. Bond markets were showing more calm as yields relaxed.
Inflation hits record 10% in 19 EU countries using euro
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Inflation in the European countries using the euro currency has broken into double digits as prices for electricity and natural gas soar. EU statistics agency Eurostat reported Friday that consumer prices in the 19-country eurozone rose a record 10% in September from a year earlier, up from an annual 9.1% in August. Only a year ago, inflation was as low as 3.4%. Price increases are at their highest level since record-keeping for the euro started in 1997. The rise in inflation signals a looming winter recession for one of the globe’s major economies as higher prices undermine consumers’ spending power.
Resilient US consumers spend slightly more in August
WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers spent a bit more in August than the previous month, a sign the economy is holding up even as inflation lifts prices for food, rent, and other essentials. Americans boosted their spending at stores and for services such as haircuts by 0.4% in August, after it fell 0.2% in July, the Commerce Department said Friday. The government’s report also showed that an inflation gauge closely monitored by the Federal Reserve rose 0.3% last month, faster than July.
Newsom relaxes refinery rules as California gas prices soar
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has called on state regulators to relax rules on oil refineries in an effort to lower soaring fuel prices. According to AAA, the average cost of a gallon of gas in California is $6.30. That’s far above the national average of $3.80. Oil refineries have to produce a specific blend of gas in the summer months that is designed to lower pollutants. Newsom wants to allow them to switch to the cheaper winter blend earlier than normal. The oil industry says that’s an acknowledgement that state regulations play a role in rising prices. Newsom also called for a new tax on oil company profits.
India launches 5G services, Modi calls it step in new era
NEW DELHI (AP) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched 5G services in India, calling it a “step towards the new era.” The government says the launch in select cities will cover the entire country over the next couple of years. Bharti Airtel is rolling out its 5G services in eight cities on Saturday and has set March 2024 as the deadline for countrywide coverage for as many as 5,000 towns. Reliance Jio telecom company plans to start from four metropolitan areas in October and hopes to reach most cities and towns in 18 months. Research agency OMDIA projects that with 369 million 5G subscriptions _ over half the total global 5G subscriptions currently _ India will be just behind China and the U.S. in world rankings by 2026.
Unpaid internships face new scrutiny as barriers to careers
Unpaid internships are facing new scrutiny from colleges, state lawmakers and student activists. Nearly half of all internships are unpaid, putting them out of reach for students who need wages to keep up with their bills, even if the work has nothing to do with their intended careers. Many students say they can’t afford to meet internship requirements, and shouldn’t be expected to work unpaid to make it in a given field. The people who can take unpaid internships have financial safety nets, and that means they tend to benefit students who are wealthier and white, perpetuating wealth gaps.
Hack puts Latin American security agencies on edge
MEXICO CITY (AP) — A massive trove of emails from Mexico’s Defense Department is among electronic communications taken by hackers from military and police security institutions in several Latin American countries. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed the breach Friday and Chile’s government said last week that emails had been taken from its Joint Chiefs of Staff. The 10 terabytes of data taken also include emails from the militaries in El Salvador, Peru and Colombia, as well as El Salvador’s National Police. The Mexico hack appeared to be the largest. The group responsible calls itself Guacamaya.
‘Big impact’: UK economic chaos, pound plunge hit businesses
LONDON (AP) — The British government’s economic stimulus plan is designed to help people and businesses by cutting taxes and growing the economy. But it’s had the opposite effect as the promise of huge unfunded tax cuts sparked turmoil in financial markets and sent the British pound tumbling to a record low against the U.S. dollar this week. For many small businesses already battling soaring costs, things have gone from bad to worse. The pound’s slide hits many businesses hard because imported materials and commodities like natural gas that are priced in dollars will be more expensive. Businesses will likely be forced to pass the costs on to consumers, which would further push up inflation.
UK’s budget watchdog promises initial analysis next week
LONDON (AP) — Britain’s independent budget watchdog says it would deliver an initial analysis of the government’s economic plan to Treasury officials on Oct. 7. That announcement Friday comes amid efforts to ease financial turmoil triggered by 45 billion pounds ($50 billion) of unfunded tax cuts. The announcement came after an unprecedented meeting between Prime Minister Liz Truss and officials from the Office for Budget Responsibility. It is unclear whether the preliminary analysis will be released to the public because the government didn’t mention it in its own statement on the meeting. The analysis is crucial to rebuilding confidence in British financial markets because the government’s failure to publish an independent assessment of the tax-cutting plan spooked investors last week.
Brainard warns US rates to stay high, notes global impact
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard said Friday that U.S. interest rates will likely have to remain high for an extended period to combat inflation, capping a week of tough rhetoric by Fed officials. In remarks at a conference hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Brainard said that international turmoil still threatens to disrupt global supplies of commodities and manufactured parts, a key factor pushing inflation higher. Brainard also said that one cannot rule out additional inflationary shocks from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China’s COVID lockdowns, or severe weather events globally.

Boomers Are Flocking To Area’s Beautiful Golf Courses And Communities – Naples Daily News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/boomers-are-flocking-to-areas-beautiful-golf-courses-and-communities-naples-daily-news/
Moorings Park Communities | Special to Naples Daily News
Mark Twain was once supposed to have quipped, “Golf is a good walk, spoiled.”
It’s not a sentiment shared by too many of the sport’s many devotees.
“Twain never had the opportunity to play on a Rees Jones-designed golf course,” smiles Tom Mann, Vice President and Senior Living Specialist for Moorings Park Communities, the area’s premier retirement destinations. “Our Moorings Park Grande Lake homes enjoy gorgeous views overlooking the Rees Jones-designed Naples Grande Golf Club. About 40 of our residents have become members. It’s just so convenient to take your golf cart there from here, and it’s one of the area’s most spectacular golf courses.”
A Premier Golf Course For A Premier Community
Rees Jones has an outstanding reputation in the golfing community. His golf course designs have earned him numerous awards, including Golf World Architect of the Year, the Golf Course Association’s Don A. Rossi Award, and a place in the Northern California Golf Association’s Hall of Fame. His firm has designed nearly two dozen courses in Florida alone, including Golf Club of the Everglades and Olde Florida Golf Club here in Naples.
Moorings Park Grande Lake resident Larry McPherson and his wife, Chuckie, are avid golfers, and have organized groups in the community to take advantage of the Naples Grande convenience.
“Rees Jones is a very respected golf course designer,” Larry points out. “This is one of his better courses in this particular area.
“When we moved in, I organized a Wednesday golf group of Moorings Park Grande Lake residents,” he says. “We have a mailing list of 24 to 26 people. Every Wednesday morning there’s about 16 of us that play. In addition, other residents have organized Monday and Friday groups.”
Chuckie helped start one of the two lady golfer groups. “I ran a group where we lived before,” she explains. “It just felt natural jumping in and doing something similar when we moved here.
“The Naples Grande Golf Course is unique in that it has no homes on it, so it has a lot of natural beauty,” she adds. “It’s nestled in Naples, but you wouldn’t know it when you’re on the course.”
You Don’t Have To Be A Golfer To Appreciate These Views
“As far as I’m concerned, Naples Grande is a beautiful course,” he says. “Our fourth floor views from our residence at Moorings Park Grande Lake overlooking holes 16, 17, and 18 are spectacular.”
The golf course sits just across the placid 28-acre Grande Lake from the Life Plan Community.
“Every residence has incredible sunset views from their impressive lanais which are perfect for indoor/outdoor entertaining,” notes Mann. “And the views from residents’ kitchens, great rooms, and master bedrooms are absolutely glorious.”
Though Moorings Park Grande Lake’s easy access to the picturesque Naples Grande Golf Club will no doubt be particularly appealing to golfers, the community’s unstinting attention to every detail of modern retirement living is appreciated by golfers and non-golfers alike.
“You don’t have to play golf to enjoy the rich and rewarding resort lifestyle available to residents here,” Mann points out. “Life here appeals to Baby Boomers with a wide range of interests.
“I’m sure we have a few fans of Mark Twain in the book club as well,” he chuckles.
A Drive For Excellence
The community’s Grande Lake Clubhouse offers over 200,000 square feet of resort-style amenities and residential living, and is unlike any other in North America. The Clubhouse hosts three restaurants which are sure to satisfy the most demanding diner: Zest Café and Bistro; Savor 26, an upscale, yet casual “go-to” with a playful menu; and BlueStone, the fine dining restaurant with an emphasis on prime meats, seafood, and overall cuisine.
The Clubhouse also features a top-of-the-line TrackMan Golf Simulator, a fitness center equipped with modern pneumatic machines and personal trainers, and a theatre for movie nights, special performances and guest speakers. The Clubhouse’s airily elegant interior engenders a relaxing atmosphere that’s perfect for friendly get-togethers with your neighbors.
“Of course, our community’s amenity-rich lifestyle also includes world-class, personalized health care and concierge physicians,” Mann adds. “The Center for Healthy Living ® located within the Clubhouse is also where you will find the Physicians’ Clinic and Outpatient Therapy services. Our attentive physicians are devoted to keeping you active and independent, with an eye on preventing small health issues from becoming big concerns.”
Assisted living and memory care services are also included in the Life Plan contract at no additional cost should you ever need them in the future.
“As one of the nation’s only not-for-profits with A or A+ ratings by S&P and Fitch Ratings services, our residents are comfortable about the future, knowing that we are the most financially secure senior living organization in the country,” Mann explains.
An Ideal Spot
Publications such as U.S. News and Travel + Leisure have recognized that Naples is one of the best places in the country to live. Ideally located just off Golden Gate Parkway, Moorings Park Grande Lake is in the perfect location to enjoy all that Naples has to offer. Residents enjoy the auspicious adjacency to Naples Grande Golf Club, and are only a few miles from exquisite sugar-white beaches on the Gulf and popular 5th Avenue shops and restaurants.

Mark Zuckerbergs Metaverse Reflects Our World Today The New Statesman

In October 2021, Meta Platforms, Inc, released a “trailer”, hosted by the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, to give a visual tour of its recent expansion into the Metaverse – the immersive, virtual-reality world that is expected to be the next great iteration of our internet technologies.
It was a curious piece of work. The trailer began with Zuckerberg standing in a living room with a fireplace, a stunning mountain view, and other conventional signifiers of wealth. The Zuckerberg who first greets us appears to be the real one; he quickly proceeds to summon up a nearly life-size digital avatar of himself, and then runs through a sequence of possible costumes to dress his Meta-self in ahead of a virtual meeting with his Meta colleagues (or, more accurately, is yea-saying underlings). He briefly considers some more outlandish outfits before deciding on one that exactly matches what he, the real Zuckerberg, is already wearing: an unassuming anti-fashion ensemble for which he has long been known for, consisting of a black shirt and black trousers. This comedic set-up reveals something about the mentality behind the dismal aesthetics of the Metaverse as we have seen it so far.
After Zuckerberg dresses his avatar, he enters a virtual conference room where he finds his colleagues eager to start discussing business. It is a cute and diverse bunch, for whom the boundary between remunerative labour and freely given conviviality seems non-existent. Most appear in ordinary human form, though one of them has decided to come as a robot – and not just any robot, but a huge round-edged, red cartoonish one. Though mechanical, the robot is in some respects the most lifelike of the gang, reminiscent of any number of non-robotic sidekicks from Obelix to Chewbacca. Soon enough some other colleagues phone in from the streets of Soho, New York City to share the “3D street art” they’ve discovered.
Next Zuckerberg’s wife Priscilla appears on a screen, and shows the gang what the family dog has been up to; Zuckerberg asks Priscilla to share this delightful clip with his dad. The world of the street-art hunters and of his wife and dog is – as far as we can tell – just the regular world: the real streets of Soho, a real backyard. The sight we catch of that world simultaneously ruptures all the virtual magic that was meant to enrapture us, and at the same time it reminds us just how far Meta still has to go before it mounts any serious alternative to the phenomenal reality mediated by our sense organs in contact with the ordinary world.

All of this happened almost a year ago. At the time it still seemed reasonable to suppose that what we were being shown was only an early rough draft, and that the still-hidden goods around which all the buzz had begun swirling would be delivered soon enough. How puzzling it was then, when in August of this year Zuckerberg, celebrating the opening of Meta’s Metaverse features in France and Spain, released a selfie featuring his avatar standing in front of the Eiffel Tower and the Sagrada Familia church (the distance between the monuments having been eradicated). Reaction on social media was caustic, vicious and hilarious. Zuckerberg’s fauvist-drawn face was described as “unprecedented cringe” and similar to an image you would see in a picture book for babies. One person wrote that the graphics were well-suited to the face of Zuckerberg, which appears bizarrely to have only three or four discernible features. Countless people said the image looked like a game made for Nintendo Wii circa 2002.
Content from our partners
It was apparently a grave failure and seemed to be a significant step back even from the modest preview we had been offered the previous year. What could have been going on at Meta headquarters?
Many people speculated that the company was simply giving up on its Metaverse project, just as Facebook has shed countless features over the years when they had failed to garner the expected interest. I rushed to a more extreme conclusion, and presumed that there was something more devious going on. Perhaps the company had conspired to make its product appear retrograde and ridiculous as part of a more elaborate and multi-phase advertising campaign, keeping the low-information masses away from investing in Metaverse real estate so to allow a privileged group of investors to buy it all up first.
These theories, however, slowly gave way to a simpler and less pleasing one. The Metaverse is only as ugly as the average of all of our species’ current unrelenting output of material and digital-cultural artefacts. Whether you approve of it or not, Meta’s vision of the Metaverse is a pretty good representation of what our world looks like today.
Some will protest that I am exaggerating; after all, it is precisely Meta’s failure to meet the standards of graphic detail and “realism” which now dominate in CGI-saturated entertainments, such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe , that has provoked the most passionate mockery. And yet our new cinematic realism is anything but. I have heard so-called “photorealism” in painting being referred to as “the neoliberalism of portraiture”. By the same token we may say that CGI-realism is what reality looks like when the only incentive to represent it is profit. The graphics in the Avengers might be “good” – unlike those in Zuckerberg’s most recent bid for our attention – but the operative notion of goodness here is not one that bears any relationship to the usual criteria of evaluation throughout the history of art. This is a “goodness” that does not bring us any closer to discovering truths about the world and our place in it, but seeks to buffer and protect us – at least momentarily – from such discoveries. So at least in this respect, though superhero movies are graphically “good” and Meta’s Metaverse world is graphically “bad”, aesthetically they are both bad in the same way.
The principal sources of aesthetically good representational art on the internet today are mostly anonymous meme-creators, and their work is, from a graphics point of view, aggressively and gleefully terrible. They delight in copy and pasting incongruous images into a single composition, with no attention given to proportions or perspective – for example putting a crying Wojak head on Joe Biden’s body, or attaching a muscular yet still somehow canine body to the head of a shiba inu dog. There is a difference between good graphics and good art, and exuberant teenaged meme-makers intuitively understand this, yet it is something that the profit-hungry content industry is, in its very nature, unable to ever grasp.

When we move down the scale from the extremely online avant-garde with their delirious memes, to the masses of normies, we find significant continuity in attitudes towards graphic precision and elegance. Similar to the vanguard, the masses care little about whether their memes look “good”; what matters most is raw feeling. This feeling is often conveyed through smiling or laughing emojis, or text-and-image jpegs featuring flowers, sunsets and prepackaged Hallmark sentiments.
A 2018 Wall Street Journal article reported that “the internet is filling up because I...

Shopping
We only recommend products we love and that we think you will, too. We may receive a portion of sales from products purchased from this article, which was written by our Commerce team.
So many people who shop — but prefer to do so from the comfort of home — know the allure of Amazon. “I’ll just duck in for a minute and see if there’s a better tool to solve this chore,” you might say aloud, though no one else is home. Three pairs of comfortable shoes, a slick electric lighter, and one rechargeable blender later, you have forgotten entirely about cleaning the toilet and are now upset that the microwave potato bags are sold out.
As you sit on the deck blending a delicious fruit smoothie with your cordless blender, you find yourself informing the cat that the lure of Amazon is, for many of us, about discovery. With a few taps on the screen, the online megastore can transport you from a mundane chore to an exploration of identity and self, technical innovation, and, well, sure, smoothies.
If you need a starting point for your next discovery mission, here are 50 cheap, fascinating things that are selling out fast on Amazon.
01
The can opener that does all the work & leaves no sharp edges
If opening cans is an irritant that leaves you with sore wrists and sliced fingers, you need this electric can opener that does all the work for you and produces an open can with no sharp edges. Just set it on top of the can and push a button to start it. It travels around the can all on its own. Press another button to stop it and your can is open. It’s small enough to store in a drawer, comes in three colors, and gets over 3,000 five-star reviews.
02
A clever way to store & dispense sandwich bags
Clean up your kitchen drawers by ditching all the boxes full of baggies and storing them instead in this elegant bag organizer and dispenser. The bamboo box is pretty enough to set on the counter and has dispenser openings for four standard bag sizes.
“I hate having all those different size boxes in my drawers,” said one reviewer. “This is sleek, stylish, and makes me happy that I can open my drawer without it getting stuck on one of the boxes.”
03
These 3 kitchen tongs you will reach for constantly
Whether you cook out of a frying pan or an air fryer, there is one kitchen tool that makes every task easier: the tong. Having a collection of them means you always have one to grab no matter what’s in the dishwasher. And this snazzy set of three kitchen tongs is the beautifully engineered and matching set that will help you flip a steak, grab fries out of the air fryer basket, or serve a salad. There are three sizes and each has silicone grips on the handles that remove for easy cleaning.
04
The vegetable chopper that cuts with precision
If all the chopping and slicing is what stops you from eating salads, stir-fries, and other healthy options, drop your onions, carrots, and other veggies on one of the grid blades of this vegetable chopper and close the lid. It will cut that vegetable (or cheese) into perfect shapes and deposit them in the large container below. Choose a blade that slices, dices, mashes, shreds, or makes waffle cuts in several thicknesses. There is also an egg separator.
05
This trick for making delicious, crispy bacon with no mess
Want a slice of bacon or two without getting out a pan or cleaning up a mess? This microwave bacon cooker makes perfect bacon every time, so you can add some to a salad or sandwich and then drop the cooker in the dishwasher for clean-up.
“Cook your bacon to the degree of crispness you want [without worrying] about flattening it in the fry pan or spilling bacon grease on the stove,” said one fan.
06
A rug gripper that stops slipping without damaging the floors
A rug that slips underfoot is annoying and dangerous. And it’s so easy to fix. Cut this rug gripper pad to fit under that throw rug and it forms a grippy connection to the floor so your rugs stay put. There is no adhesive to damage the floor but the pillowy, foam grid pattern holds firmly while allowing airflow under the rug.
“It’s almost as if the rug is glued to the floor,” said one reviewer.
07
This bottle that infuses your water with fruit & herb flavors
Drink tastier water no matter where your day takes you by packing along this infuser bottle. Fill the infuser with fruit, herbs, or cucumbers — or whatever combination of flavors you like — and it turns your plain cold water into a delicious beverage that’s also totally healthy. It holds 32 ounces of water and has a leakproof, flip-top lid and a nonslip carry grip on the side.
08
A bidet attachment that bathes you in hot or cold water
Upgrade the toilet experience in your home in a few minutes by installing this bidet that offers a cleansing shower of your undercarriage whenever you like, at the turn of a dial. It delivers cold and warm water to your posterior for a clean you will never achieve with dry paper. It taps the supply lines of your sink and toilet, fits under your current toilet seat, and installs easily in just a few minutes.
“Once you buy this you can never go back to life before. It is awesome,” said one satisfied reviewer.
09
The milk frother so you can create foamy coffee drinks at home
Turn your morning coffee into a café-worthy cappuccino or café au lait simply by dipping this milk frother into your milk and letting the super-fast whisk froth it up. It works on dairy, nut, soy, or oat milks, and takes only a few seconds to create a delicious froth from cold or warm milk. It comes with a little counter stand, runs on batteries, and over 11,000 people gave it five stars.
10
A giant water bottle with a carry bag & pockets
Pack along plenty of water with this half-gallon water bottle that comes with a handy, fitted carrying sleeve. Tuck your phone, keys, and other essentials into the exterior pockets and sling it over one shoulder so you don’t have to find and buy water to survive a day in the field. It comes with two lids — a chug and a covered straw — and the strap is adjustable.
11
This wireless doorbell that’s so easy to install
Installing a doorbell is so much easier than you imagine with this wireless doorbell. Simply peel and stick the button to the exterior in a place visitors will see, and plug the receiver into an outlet inside. It has a range of up to 1,000 feet and you can choose from over 50 tones for your ringer. Once you get this kit with two buttons and one receiver set up, you can add more of them as motion and door sensors to create a super convenient home-alert system.
12
An easy way to help correct your posture & align your spine
Help improve your posture and back, shoulder, and chest strength with this simple posture corrector. Wear it under your clothes for 30 minutes or so a day and it pulls your shoulders back to help you quit slouching.
“I have been using this for two weeks already and I really feel like it is helping me,” said one reviewer. “Even when I am not wearing it, I [sit] with my shoulders back instead of … slouching.”
13
The cordless vacuum that makes cleaning as you go so easy
Popcorn on the couch. Coffee grounds on the counter. Cookie crumbs in the car seats. Grab this handheld cordless vacuum and clean all of that up without hauling out a big machine. It’s rechargeable, lightweight, plugs into the car lighter, and has three useful attachments that will grab dust and crumbs, reach into crevices, and snake into awkward places. A washable HEPA filter makes sure the dust stays in till you empty the dust cup.
14
A set of hangers that will streamline all your pants
Create space and make getting dressed easier by hanging all your pants on these multi-hangers. Each of these three pants hangers holds four pairs of pants each so you can neatly store nine pairs that would otherwise take up quite a bit closet space. They are also a great way to organize by color or style to simplify getting dressed. The rubber-coated clips slide on the bar so you can fit them to your garments.
15
A trap that uses light to help eliminate flying insects from your home
Get rid of gnats, fruit flies, mosquitos, and other flying insects easily and without resorting to chemicals by plugging this sconce-style flying insect trap into any outlet and letting the combination of blue and UV light lure bugs to their end. Once in the trap, they become stuck to a powerful adhesive. You never have to touch the adhesive pads to replace them, either, because they are built into a plastic frame that’s easy to remove.
16
These stick-on lights that solve so many dark problems
Illuminate everything from walking down stairs to finding things in a closet to loading the trunk of your car by mounting these stick-on lights strategically in every spot in your path that is too dark. They turn on when it’s dark and they sense motion. Then they turn off again 30 seconds later so you have light when you need it and never have to think about it. Because they are low-power LEDs and are only on briefly, the batteries last a long time.
17
A UV light sanitizer for your phone & everyday carry
Drop your phone — or your sunglasses, earbuds, or car keys — into this little UV sanitizer and charger box for a clean, charged phone fast. Just close the lid and it will bathe your phone in a UV light that wipes out up to 99% of germs, viruses, and bacteria that your gear picked up while you were out in the world. If your phone is capable of wireless charging, it will also top up your power.
“Great for phones, keys, watches, wallets & masks,” one reviewer advised.
18
The portable & rechargeable blender you can take anywhere
Toss this portable blender in your bag so you can have a healthy meal wherever you are going. It is rechargeable and you can detach the jar ...

Home Tech News After Bankruptcies, Layoffs, Losses, Does Crypto Owe an Apology After $2 Trillion Slump?
Bankruptcies, layoffs and eye-popping losses have become fixtures of the digital-asset sector.
Bankruptcies, layoffs and eye-popping losses have become fixtures of the digital-asset sector over the past few months, as it reels from a $2 trillion drop in its market value.
So as the fallout continues to reverberate, does the industry owe anyone an apology?
That’s one of the questions we addressed on the first episode of Crypto IRL, a new Bloomberg Quicktake series.
“I do think that certain executives of certain companies that lost millions, tens of millions, billions of dollars of consumers’ funds, they definitely have explaining to do,” Meltem Demirors, chief strategy officer at CoinShares, said on the show. “And I do think they’ll be held to account.”
Over the course of eight episodes, Crypto IRL will sort through the rubble to assess what’s left standing and what’s ahead.
Demirors says there could still be more pain, as crypto-mining companies struggle to stay afloat with asset prices declining and the cost of energy rising.
“The big part of the ecosystem I’m still concerned about is crypto miners,” she said.
Watch Crypto IRL on Fridays at 8 p.m. New York time on Bloomberg Quicktake, and at 8:30 p.m. on Bloomberg TV. And it’s always streaming at www.bloomberg.com/qt.
U.S. Energy Independence Has Grown – Forbes https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/u-s-energy-independence-has-grown-forbes/
Getty Images
I am often asked if the U.S. is energy independent, or whether we have ever been energy independent. A claim I frequently encounter is that President Trump made us energy independent, and we lost that under President Biden.”
Before addressing such a claim, you must ensure that everyone is speaking the same language. When someone makes that claim to me, I ask them to define energy independence.
If energy independence means we don’t import oil, then that hasn’t been true since the 1940s. If it means we export more energy than we import, then we became energy independent in 2019 (following a decade of soaring oil and gas production), but we remain energy independent today.
Others may define energy independence as producing more than we consume. In that case, we reached that milestone in 2020. It was primarily a result of a sharp drop in consumption because of the Covid-19 pandemic, accompanied by a smaller drop in energy production that year. But, that milestone remained intact in 2021.
It is true that we achieved both of those energy independence milestones under President Trump. What isn’t true, is that it was because of anything special that he did. His energy policies may have helped a bit, but the primary cause was a surge in domestic oil and gas production that occurred as a result of the fracking boom.
From 2006 to 2016, U.S. energy production increased from 70.7 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) to 84.3 quads. The U.S. experienced record energy production in 2015, but 2016 production pulled back because of the oil price collapse.
During Trump’s term — 2017 through 2020 — U.S. energy production increased by another 11.3 quads (although, again, 2019 was a record year and 2020 production declined because of the pandemic). The rate of increase was a bit higher under President Trump, which you can see in the graphic below. But the trend of surging energy production and falling energy imports since 2006 is also clear.
Energy Information Administration
So President Trump didn’t make us energy independent. In fact, the gap between supply and demand substantially shrunk when President Obama was in office (again, because that’s when fracking really ramped up). But it would be fair to argue that President Trump’s energy policies slightly sped up the timeline in getting to the finish line of energy independence.
However, what isn’t true is that we lost that energy independence under President Biden.
Using the definition of exports minute imports, 2021 was our highest level of energy independence in history. In other words, we are even more energy independent than we were in 2019. (You can see all the data in U.S. Energy Facts Explained at the EIA website, which is also the source of the above graphic).
You can see the proof at the link. In 2019, our energy exports were greater than our imports by 0.61 quadrillion Btus (quads). In 2020, that excess grew to 3.47 quads (mainly because imports fell as Covid hit demand) and in 2021 it grew to a new record of 3.82 quads. By that measure, we are more energy independent than we have ever been.
If you prefer the definition of production minus consumption, then we are also still energy independent. In 2020 the U.S. produced 2.7 more quads than we consumed. In 2021, that excess shrank to 0.45 quads on the back of strong post-shutdown demand. So you could argue that by that measure our level of energy independence declined from 2020 to 2021, but it didn’t disappear.
If your preferred definition of energy independence is that we don’t import energy, as you can see from the graphic we haven’t come close to meeting that metric at any point since the 1950s.
So, on an apples-to-apples comparison, depending on your definition we are either still energy independent, or we never were.

British Steels Chinese Owner Seeks Huge Government Aid Package Sky News
British Steel’s Chinese Owner Seeks Huge Government Aid Package – Sky News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/british-steels-chinese-owner-seeks-huge-government-aid-package-sky-news/
The owners of Britain’s second-biggest steel producer are seeking an urgent package of financial support from taxpayers amid renewed fears for thousands of industrial jobs in the north of England.
Sky News has learnt that Jingye Group, which bought British Steel out of insolvency in 2020, has told ministers that the company’s two blast furnaces are unlikely to be viable without government aid.
British Steel, which is headquartered in Scunthorpe, north Lincolnshire, employs about 4,000 people, with thousands more jobs in its supply chain dependent upon the company.
The request from Jingye poses a major headache for Jacob Rees-Mogg, the new business secretary, on the eve of the Conservative Party’s annual conference in Birmingham.
While the precise scale of the support being sought by the Chinese industrial group was unclear this weekend, insiders suggested that it would need “hundreds of millions of pounds” to keep the Scunthorpe blast furnaces operational.
It was also unclear whether any financial subsidy would be in the form of a loan or grant.
One insider said that Jingye was prepared to make thousands of people redundant if ministers rejected its request.
It would then plan to import steel from China to roll at British Steel’s UK sites, according to the insider.
This weekend, the government confirmed that it was “working at pace with the company to understand the best way forward as it seeks to secure a more sustainable future”.
“We recognise that businesses are feeling the impact of high global energy prices, particularly steel producers, which is why we have announced the Energy Bill Relief Scheme to bring down costs,” a spokesman for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said.
“This is in addition to extensive support we have provided to the steel sector as a whole to help with energy costs, worth more than £780m since 2013.”
Industrial consumers of energy have complained for months that soaring prices are imperilling their ability to continue investing, with continuing uncertainty about the duration and cost of a recently announced government subsidy scheme.
For Mr Rees-Mogg, who took over as business secretary less than a month ago, a decision over government support presents a politically undesirable menu of choices.
If no state funding is made available and significant numbers of jobs are axed, it would undermine a key tenet of the ‘levelling-up’ strategy that became a doctrine of Boris Johnson’s administration.
An agreement to provide substantial taxpayer funding to a Chinese-owned business, however, would almost certainly provoke outrage among Tory critics of Beijing.
China’s role in global steel production, after years of international trade rows about dumping, would make any subsidies even more contentious.
A British Steel spokesman said: “We are investing hundreds of millions of pounds in our long-term future but like most other companies we are facing a significant challenge because of the economic slowdown, surging inflation and exceptionally high energy and carbon prices.
“We welcome the recent announcement by the UK government to reduce energy costs for businesses and remain in dialogue with officials to ensure we compete on a level playing field with our global competitors.”
It is the second time in little more than three years that serious doubt has been cast over British Steel’s future.
In May 2019, the Official Receiver was appointed to take control of the company after negotiations over an emergency £30m government loan fell apart.
British Steel had been formed in 2016 when India’s Tata Steel sold the business for £1 to Greybull Capital, an investment firm.
As part of the deal that secured ownership of British Steel for Jingye, the Chinese group said it would invest £1.2bn in modernising the business during the following decade.
Jingye’s purchase of the company, which completed in the spring of 2020, was hailed by Mr Johnson as assuring the long-term future of steel production in Britain’s industrial heartlands.
“The sounds of these steelworks have long echoed throughout Yorkshire and Humber and the North East,” he said.
“Today, as British Steel takes its next steps under Jingye’s leadership, we can be sure these will ring out for decades to come.
“I’d like to thank every British Steel employee in Scunthorpe, Skinningrove and on Teesside for their dedication and resilience which has kept the business thriving over the past year.
“Jingye’s pledge to invest £1.2 billion into the business is a welcome boost that will not just secure thousands of jobs, but ensure British Steel continues to prosper.”
Tata, which owns the vast Port Talbot steelworks in Wales, remains Britain’s biggest steel producer.
It, too, has sought government support in recent months, with the Financial Times reporting in July that the Indian-owned group was seeking £1.5bn of taxpayer funding to help it decarbonise its operations.
Liberty Steel, the third-biggest player in the industry, saw a bid for £170m in state aid rejected last year by Kwasi Kwarteng, the then business secretary.
As chancellor, Mr Kwarteng will play a key role in determining the fate of Jingye’s request for support.
This weekend, it was unclear how quickly a decision would be reached by ministers or whether advisers had been drafted in to help negotiate on either side.
A government insider pointed out that a range of support schemes aimed at heavy industry remained operational.

PCOS And Other Related Lifestyle Disorders: How Holistic Living Can Provide A Better Lifestyle? | TheHealt – TheHealthSite https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/pcos-and-other-related-lifestyle-disorders-how-holistic-living-can-provide-a-better-lifestyle-thehealt-thehealthsite/
PCOS Awareness Month 2022: Lifestyle health issues are mainly caused due to bad lifestyle choices like unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking, drinking, inadequate sleep, stress, etc. These health conditions have witnessed a considerable surge in recent years. Lifestyle-related health issues like obesity, thyroid, PCOS / PCOD and diabetes can only be addressed by adopting a clean and holistic lifestyle. Let’s discuss how adopting a holistic lifestyle can be a solution to treat health issues like PCOS, which is vastly prevalent in women these days. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS, is a hormonal imbalance that affects 6% to 12% of women in the reproductive age group. The root cause behind this health condition is yet to be known, but it is believed that insulin resistance and an increase in the production of male hormones, androgen, are responsible for it. Some symptoms women with PCOS suffer are diabetes, obesity, unrequired hair growth, acne and irregular periods. Although the symptoms can be controlled by adopting a holistic lifestyle, there is no cure for PCOS.
What Is A Holistic Lifestyle?
A holistic lifestyle is a living style in which the mind, body and soul are nurtured to focus on overall well-being. To have overall good health, we must take care of our physical, mental and spiritual health. Although a holistic approach toward life differs from person to person, it is all about living a balanced and healthy life. Moreover, adopting holistic living is not a one-day phenomenon but a consistent and conscious everyday way of living.
A holistic approach is a way of life where you incorporate healthy habits and practices into your daily routine, like maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, adding clean and plant-based nutrition, exercising, meditating, practising mindfulness and nurturing a connection between mind and body. Our mind has the power to bring changes in our lives. Therefore, we must be careful about our thoughts.
How To Adopt A Holistic Lifestyle?
Adopting a holistic lifestyle can be the solution to managing lifestyle health issues like PCOS. Shikha Dwivedi Msc. Clinical nutrition and dietetics at OZiva share five tips that can help you adopt a holistic lifestyle:
Maintain a daily routine: The best way to adopt a holistic lifestyle is by maintaining a daily regime. Try to practice certain things every day to make it a habit. It is said that it takes 21 days to form a habit; follow a regime diligently to see the benefit.
Believe in yourself and don’t stress: Until and unless you believe in yourself, nobody can help you. Therefore, believe in yourself and remain committed to a holistic lifestyle that will lead to overall wellness. High levels of stress can increase adrenaline and cortisol levels in the body. Therefore, it is best to immediately curb those rising stress levels by seeking professional help or trying simple things to make you happy.
Eat well and remain hydrated: Adopting a holistic lifestyle comes with a balanced diet. Include a lot of fruits, vegetables, fibre and protein-rich foods in your diet to avoid health problems. In addition, adopting simple habits like eating clean, including plant-based supplements and drinking adequate water, can help fulfil the holistic lifestyle approach. Also, avoid processed foods with artificial ingredients and highly processed, deep-fried and sugary foods that offer empty calories.
Meditate: Research has revealed how meditation can bring peace and quietness to our mind, which leads to several health benefits. With meditation, the ongoing disturbance of the mind slows down, making us feel more relaxed and happy.
Physical activities: Indulge in 30 minutes daily, like practising yoga, going for walks, exercising in the gym, swimming, etc. Physical activities not just help you lose weight, it makes you active. Unfortunately, with most of us living a sedentary lifestyle, it becomes difficult to exercise regularly. To keep yourself active, use stairs instead of elevators and stroll in your home rather than just sitting on the couch.
Conclusion
Our lifestyle choices can either help or hinder us from leading a better life. Therefore, it is our call to ensure the right decision and adopt a holistic lifestyle that focuses on overall well-being. Lifestyle health issues like PCOS can be taken care of with a holistic approach, incorporating good dietary habits, including plant-based supplements.

What Channel Is Kentucky Vs. Ole Miss On Today? Time, TV Schedule For Week 5 College Football Game – Sporting News https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/what-channel-is-kentucky-vs-ole-miss-on-today-time-tv-schedule-for-week-5-college-football-game-sporting-news/
The Ole Miss begins SEC play with a Week 5 matchup against Kentucky. Ole Miss, ranked No. 14 in the country, hosts No. 7 in an SEC East vs. SEC West showdown.
The game has an interesting element to its coaching matchup, as Mark Stoops takes on Lane Kiffin. Kiffin has established a tough, physical identity for the Rebels he’ll look to carry into conference play. Stoops, meanwhile, is looking to reestablish the ground game behind his offensive line.
The return of Chris Rodriguez, who was suspended, could help to kickstart that endeavor. Rodriguez rushed for 1,379 yards and nine touchdowns last year. If he’s able to return to form, it should put some life into the running game for Big Blue.
Ole Miss is 7-2 in its last nine meetings against Kentucky at home. It will be trying to uphold that strong record Saturday.

Metaverse: LG CNS Unity Technologies Join Forces For Metaverse Business Partnership EconoTimes
Metaverse: LG CNS, Unity Technologies Join Forces For Metaverse Business Partnership – EconoTimes https://bentoncountynewsnow.com/metaverse-lg-cns-unity-technologies-join-forces-for-metaverse-business-partnership-econotimes/
LG CNS, a subsidiary of LG Corporation that provides information technology, business process outsourcing, system and network integration, and consulting services, has teamed up with Unity Technologies video game software development company, to work together on the metaverse businesses.
LG CNS and Unity Technologies said on Thursday, Sept. 29, that they have signed a “Global Platinum Authorized Channel Partnership” deal for cooperation in metaverse business. The platinum rating in the tie-up refers to a qualification that is granted only to firms that have a large number of digital transformation-related experts.
Additionally, they must be operating a sales professional organization with their own digital transformation businesses. Another important condition for the platinum partnership is the usage of Unity Technologie’s new services and the ability to provide technical support to customers. In any case, The Korea Times reported that this is the first time that the San Francisco-based software company has partnered with a Korean company.
With the cooperation, both firms will carry out businesses in the metaverse, so they will be building virtual spaces for the operations. The agreement will allow the two firms to innovate customer experience through the three metaverse squadrons – the virtual factory, the virtual logistics, and the Metaverse office. To achieve this, LG CNS and Unity Technologies will combine their base technical expertise.
“Through collaboration with Unity, the global No. 1 company in the 3D platform industry, we will link with LG CNS’ main fields of smart factory and smart logistics business,” LG CNS CTO’s managing director, Kim Seon Jeong, said in a press release.
Kim In Sook, the chief executive officer of Unity Korea, also said about the tie-up, “It is the best way to build an advanced metaverse environment by supporting the DX capabilities of LG CNS such as AI, digital twin, big data, and cloud, and Unity’s technological capabilities, which are being used as the core to build the global metaverse ecosystem. I will do my best.”
Finally, LG CNS is planning to establish a metaverse office at its Magok headquarters before this year ends. The company’s virtual workplace will offer many features such as multi-party video conference, one on one chatting, and a video conference that has a room for more than 1,000 people.

The Crypto Market Integrity Coalition (CMIC) announced the induction of eight new members, the organization announced on Sept. 29. The organization, which now has 38 members who have all taken a pledge to uphold market integrity and efficiency, describes itself as such:
“CMIC […] gives a unified voice to the crypto industry’s commitment to continually improving market integrity and collaboration with regulators.”
According to its statement, CMIC is also developing market integrity training for digital asset markets to help compliance professionals counter manipulation.
The new CMIC members are digital asset trust and security company BitGo, crypto exchange Bittrex, blockchain analytics platform Crystal Blockchain, fintech firms FinClusive and Oasis Pro Markets, Web3 risk mitigation platform Merkle Science, digital assets platform Tokenomy and forensic services provider VAF Compliance.
.@FinClusiveCap is proud to join the Crypto Market Integrity Coalition (CMIC). Looking forward to working together to elevate standards and enable safe and regulated crypto growth. Go to https://t.co/2suE9kovi1 to join the effort #CryptoMarketIntegrity

CMIC is the brainchild of market surveillance firm Solidus Labs. Solidus cofounder and CEO Asaf Meir said, “Now more than ever before, it is clear that crypto’s potential depends on the ability to mitigate its new risks and provide demonstrable market integrity.”

The organization was founded in February with 17 members that included such names as Coinbase, Circle, Huobi Tech and CryptoUK. A second cohort of 13 members joined CMIC in April.
Solidus Labs chief operating officer Chen Arad told Cointelegraph, “CMIC does not define itself as an aspiring self-regulatory organization and rather works closely with, and has among its signatories, some of the leading industry membership associations like cryptoUK, the Chamber of Digital Commerce and the Global Blockchain Business Council.”
The CMIC pledge reads, in part:
“We support and seek to participate in digital asset markets that demonstrate Market Integrity. […] Digital assets and digital asset market structure may present novel forms of market activity and market manipulation. We agree to continually educate ourselves as to these unique challenges and how to address them.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Rescuers searched for survivors among the ruins of Florida’s flooded homes from Hurricane Ian while authorities in South Carolina waited for daylight to assess damage from the storm’s second strike as the remnants of one of the strongest and costliest disasters to ever hit the U.S. continued to push north.
The powerful storm terrorized millions of people for most of the week, battering western Cuba before raking across Florida from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean, where it mustered enough strength for a final assault on South Carolina. It has since weakened to a still-dangerous post-tropical cyclone and was crossing North Carolina toward Virginia overnight, pushing heavy rains toward the Mid-Atlantic states.
At least 30 people were confirmed dead, including 27 people in Florida mostly from drowning but others from the storm’s tragic aftereffects. An elderly couple died after their oxygen machines shut off when they lost power, authorities said. Meanwhile, distraught residents waded through knee-high water on Friday, salvaging what possessions they could from their flooded homes and loading them onto rafts and canoes.
“I want to sit in the corner and cry. I don’t know what else to do,” Stevie Scuderi said after shuffling through her mostly destroyed Fort Myers apartment, the mud in her kitchen clinging to her purple sandals.
In South Carolina, Ian’s center came ashore near Georgetown, a small community along the Winyah Bay about 60 miles (95 kilometers) north of historic Charleston. The storm washed away parts of four piers along the coast, including two connected to the popular tourist town of Myrtle Beach.
The storm’s winds were much weaker on Friday than during Ian’s landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast earlier in the week. There authorities and volunteers were still assessing the damage as shocked residents tried to make sense of what they just lived through.
Anthony Rivera, 25, said he had to climb through the window of his first floor apartment during the storm to carry his grandmother and girlfriend to the second floor. As they hurried to escape the rising water, the storm surge had washed a boat right up next to his apartment.
“That’s the scariest thing in the world because I can’t stop no boat,” he said. “I’m not Superman.”
Even though Ian has long passed over Florida, new problems continued to arise. A 14-mile (22-kilometer) stretch of major Interstate 75 was closed late Friday in both directions in the Port Charlotte area because of the huge amount of water swelling the Myakka River.
Authorities warn the death toll could rise as rescue attempts and damage assessment continue
The official death toll climbed throughout the day on Friday, with authorities warning it would likely rise much higher once crews made a more comprehensive sweep of the damage. Searches on Friday were aimed at emergency rescues and initial assessments, Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said. He described one submerged home as an example.
“The water was up over the rooftop, right, but we had a Coast Guard rescue swimmer swim down into it and he could identify that it appeared to be human remains. We do not know exactly how many,” Guthrie said.
The dead included a 68-year-old woman swept into the ocean by a wave and a 67-year-old man who who fell into rising water inside his home while awaiting rescue.
Authorities also said a 22-year-old woman died after an ATV rollover from a road washout and a 71-year-old man suffered a fatal fall from a rooftop while putting up rain shutters. Another three people died in Cuba earlier in the week.

Hurricane Ian has likely caused “well over $100 billion” in damage, including $63 billion in privately insured losses, according to the disaster modeling firm Karen Clark & Company, which regularly issues flash catastrophe estimates. If those numbers are borne out, that would make Ian at least the fourth costliest hurricane in U.S. history.
In the Sarasota suburb of North Point, Florida, residents of the Country Club Ridge subdivision waded Friday through waterlogged streets. John Chihil solemnly towed a canoe and another small boat through the ankle-deep water.
“There’s really not much to feel. It’s an act of God, you know?” he said. “I mean, that’s all you can do is pray and hope for a better day tomorrow.”
