Die alliierten Bombardierungen beschränkten sich nicht auf den Siedlungsverband Ruhrkohlenbezirk, sondern umfassten die gesamte heutige Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr. Das Flächenbombardement hatte seine Höhepunkte in den Jahren 1943 und 1944, so zum Beispiel in den fünf Monaten der Battle of the Ruhr (Schlacht um die Ruhr) des RAF Bomber Command. Nach dem Ruhrkessel und der Einnahme des Ruhrgebiets durch die US-Armee im April 1945 endeten die Luftangriffe. Minoan architects broke new ground in both building planning and construction techniques, mostly evident in the buildings with palatial features. The epitome of Minoan architecture is the imposing palace of Knossos. An emblematic Minoan innovation is the "polythyron hall" with pier-and-door partitions and lightwells offering various possible combinations of circulation, lighting and ventilation. Another pioneering invention is the addition of wooden columns to the façades, forming colonnades and balconies looking onto the great courts. The crowning achievement of design and construction is the "Grand Staircase" of Knossos, with its successive flights supported on columns. A dense grid of timber frames ensures the stability of the structures. Raised stone and painted plaster elements of doorways and floors, and particularly the extensive use of gypsum (a type of alabaster) on the floors and ashlar masonry on the façades, give the Knossian palace a sense of monumental luxury. Its architectural complexity, the maze-like interior, the shifts of light and shade, gave rise to and preserved the myth of the Minoan Labyrinth.
