The Atlas of Historical County Boundaries, a project of the William M. Scholl Center for American History and Culture at The Newberry Library, is an electronic reference tool for historical research. It provides detailed maps and data on the creation and changes of U.S. county boundaries, including non-county areas, failed county proposals, name changes, and temporary attachments. The primary sources are official session laws from colonies, territories, and states.
Consists of written descriptions of Census Districts, Subdivisions, and Enumeration Districts. For the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Censuses there are textual descriptions of the Census District (usually a state or part of a state) and the Subdivision (usually a county or part of a county). Beginning with the 1880 Census, the descriptions relate to Enumeration Districts, which were areas that could be covered by a single enumerator (census taker) in a census period that lasted several weeks. The districts are described in terms of counties, parts of counties, townships, wards, precincts, blocks, and streets. The census boundaries are usually defined by political boundaries. Also included for some censuses are the names and addresses of enumerators and special instructions to them.
The Seventy-Sixth Regiment, New York State Volunteers, was raised from the small towns and farms of central New York State. During its three years of existence it fought with the Army of the Potomac in most of the battles in the eastern theater of the war, from Fredericksburg to Petersburg. At the Battle of Gettysburg, the 76th was "first on the field", at the right flank of the entire army, and suffered terrible casualties as a result. The men of the regiment were mustered out or transferred to other regiments between July 1864 and January 1865, at which point the regiment ceased to exist.
Every ten years from 1906 to 1946, the U.S. Census Bureau surveyed congregations, synagogues, and other religious groups in the United States. Records contain information about each congregation, including its membership by age and sex, its expenditures on buildings and missions, its minister’s name and whether he or she had gone to seminary, and its denominational affiliation
