Chlorine Dioxide Treatment for Food Processing | PureLine
{***Includes useful illustration of size related to viruses, bacteria, etc} At 124 picometers (0.000124 micrometers), a chlorine dioxide gas molecule is *****much smaller than any microorganism****. Chlorine dioxide is a real gas and by definition expands and conforms to the shape of the area in which it is held and acquires a uniform density inside that area, even in the presence of gravity and also regardless of the amount of equipment in the area. This property of chlorine dioxide gas allows it to easily penetrate and disinfect locations where other fumigant applications such as dry fog is not able to effectively reach.
Effect of low-concentration chlorine dioxide gas against bacteria and viruses on a glass surface in wet environments
The treatment of wet environments in the presence of human activity such as kitchens and bathrooms with the low-concentration ClO2 gas would be useful for reducing the risk of infection by bacteria and viruses residing on the environmental hard surfaces without adverse effects. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study demonstrates that the low-concentration ClO2 gas (mean 0Æ05 ppmv) inactivates various kinds ofmicrobes such as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, enveloped and nonenveloped viruses in the wet state
Controlling Mold on Library Materials with Chlorine Dioxide: An Eight-Year Case Study
"chlorine dioxide's inhibition of future mold growth after fogging (5 years) and after use of gas packets (6 months, to date) suggests a strong sporicidal activity. " "...self-activating packet (Aseptrol™) that reacts with humidity in the air, was used. The packet is a loose powder sachet, which will begin releasing chlorine dioxide in 90 minutes after exposure to ambient relative humidity. This sachet will release 1/2-2 vppm of chlorine dioxide per gram of material in a one gallon volume with 10cc/minute of continuous air changeover. The sachet will continue to release at a constant rate for 15 days before exhausting at 85% relative humidity and over 30 days at 31% humidity." "In particular, the health hazards of uncontrolled mold may outweigh the use of "safe" fungicides." "The use of this substance, particularly with the gas packet technology, is attractive. Convenience, low labor costs and its potential to avert disastrous mold outbreaks."

Preventive Effect Against Influenza-Like Illness by Low-Concentration Chlorine Dioxide Gas ~Japan Self-Defense Force facilities
2010. The preventive effect against influenza-like illness by low-concentration chlorine dioxide gas was examined among Japan Ground Self Defense Force soldiers and civilians at a particular camp. The chlorine dioxide gas-exposed group consisted of all individuals who worked in a particular building, and the unexposed group consisted of all individuals who worked inthe neighboring building. Results showed that the relative risk of influenza-like illness after chlorine dioxide gas exposure was 0.32(95% confidence interval between 0.15 and 0.69), although the vaccination rate in the exposed group was lower than the unexposed group. This result suggests that chlorine dioxide gas has preventive effects against influenza-like illness. {Translations at end of this page, and at translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jstage.jst.go.jp%2Farticle%2Fjsei%2F25%2F5%2F25_5_277%2F_pdf%2F-char%2Fja }

Evaluation and improvement of air quality in school public elevator (using hand-held chlorine dioxide sprayer)
2013. The elevator used in the present study
had a volume of 4.5 m3. Thus, to satisfy the 8-h TWA limit of 0.3 mg/m3, fumigation was performed using a 5.4 mL ClO2 solution (250 mg/L). The ClO2 solution was applied using a simple handheld spraying device... The results suggest that for a maximum of five individuals within the elevator, the ClO2 application process should be repeated at 40-min intervals in order to meet the air quality requirements of the Taiwan EPA. Pathogens tested were bacteria and fungi.

The Effectiveness of Chlorine Dioxide in Inactivating Influenza Virus *thesis paper*
****!!!!*** 2016. "The assay showed complete hemagglutinin inhibition and therefore protection for influenza virusesin just thirty minutes of exposure. These results show that chlorine dioxide has high potential for a successful preventative treatment in poultry flocks. The granular form, which involves the chlorine dioxide compound and an oxidizing agent, is more advantageous than other methods of distributing chlorine dioxide treatment. This method of release for chlorine dioxide could be directly placed beneath the floor of poultry farm cages and be used as an ongoing method of prevention."
Organic films on atmospheric aerosol particles, fog droplets, cloud droplets, raindrops, and snowflakes
******!!!!!******** "Organic films are probably common on atmospheric aerosol particles and that they may occur under certain circumstances on fog droplets, cloud droplets, and snowflakes. If present, they will increase the lifetimes of aerosol particles, fog droplets, and cloud droplets, both by inhibiting water vapor evaporation and by reducing the efficiency with which these atmospheric components are scavenged. The presence of the films will not cause a significant reduction of solar radiation within the aqueous solution. It appears likely, however, that the transport of gaseous molecules into and out of the aqueous solution will be impeded by factors of several hundred or more when organic films are present. Since incorporated gas molecules provide much of the oxidizing potential of atmospheric water droplets, the organic films will play a major role in droplet chemistry by strongly inhibiting solution oxidation."
