ADHD: “Just start!” is one of the most common (and least helpful) things we say to ADHD kids.
***!!!*** Tips to Help ADHD Kids Start (Not Just Finish)
Because the truth is: starting is often the hardest part.
This is called a task initiation delay — and it’s a core executive function challenge in ADHD.
Their brain might know what to do…
They may even want to do it…
But they just. can’t. start.
Why?
⚡ Their brain isn’t generating the internal “GO” signal.
⚡ They may be overwhelmed by how big or boring the task feels.
⚡ They might feel anxious about doing it wrong.
⚡ Their dopamine system isn’t lighting up with motivation.
⸻
✅ 5 Tips to Help Your ADHD Child START:
1️⃣ Co-start: Sit with them for the first 1–2 steps. Your presence helps regulate and initiate.
2️⃣ Use external prompts: Timers, music, or countdowns provide the missing “GO” cue.
3️⃣ Chunk the task: Instead of “do your homework,” say “write the heading” or “open your laptop.”
4️⃣ Offer a warm-up: Do an easy or fun task first to build momentum.
5️⃣ Celebrate starting — not finishing. This teaches them success begins with effort, not outcome.
⸻
They’re not lazy. They’re not ignoring you. They’re stuck. And with the right tools, you can help them get unstuck — gently.
👉 Inside Quiet the Chaos, I teach you how to support ADHD kids through task initiation, follow-through, and emotional regulation — without nagging, yelling, or sticker charts.
