Here are a few thoughts: 💸 Many facilitators tend to under-charge and over-prepare. This is less of a problem when we are starting out as facilitators and want to build a reputation. But, once we become professional facilitators we need to cultivate more confidence that our services matter and provide tremendous value to our clients. 💸 While pricing depends on several factors, we must take into consideration that with increasing expertise, we get more done in less time but the value remains (at least the same). Hence, charging by the hour does no longer make sense. 💸 Charging by the participant only makes sense when clients pay a lump sum for x participants and an additional fee for additional participants. If the group is small, most of your work remains the same but every single participant receives more value and air-time. If the group size increases, complexity increases for you, and potentially preparation time (in case you have conversations with all participants beforehand as I do for instance).
