Small study of reflective blogging to build a learning community with teachers. Overall, the results were positive and the teachers felt the experience was beneficial, but there were some technical and other difficulties.
Anyone who can access the Internet can be part of the knowledge-access, knowledge-building,
information-exchanging culture, regardless of location.
Learning communities do not have to be built through face-to-face interactions.
They can be realized using nontraditional electronic communication.
Research suggests that in order for busy teachers to use an asynchronous learning
environment they must feel part of a shared vision, have a sense of ownership
of some part of the site, and benefit from the shared perspectives of others
(Robertson, 2007). Providing the kind of scaffolding that has these features
is challenging. Teachers are not typically given the time or the venue to
share, discuss, or see examples of pedagogical alternatives for their classroom
on any kind of regular basis (Darling-Hammond, 1997).
<p>Although our sample size is rather small, the findings of this study suggest
that most participants (community college faculty members, mentor, and intern
teachers) recognized the value of blogging as a platform for sharing resources
and ideas and reflecting on personal experiences. Several teachers were planning
to use blogging with their own students. </p>
<p>Blogging seemed to at least indirectly benefit most PLC-MAP teachers in terms
of integrating technology into their own teaching practices. </p>

And so, the challenge is that when I try to divest myself of my teacherly voice I need to remember that this process is not about losing the voice of the expert but about losing the voice of the traditional authoritarian teacher who enters the classroom as an official persona armed with a pre-defined set of goals and very specific lesson plans for his students to follow. It is about giving the students the freedom to engage with ideas that they find relevant and interesting, not about dictating every step of their learning process.
I believe that it is important to lose the authoritarian voice, the controlling voice, but not the voice of an expert who chose to teach because of his passion for the subject. The students need to see that the instructor is someone who lives and breathes whatever it is that they’re studying, that they have in their midst someone who has a wealth of expertise.

Top News - Blogging helps encourage teen writing
Survey results about teens and writing, showing that students who blog write more for personal reasons and are more likely to think writing skills are essential. Most students think their writing would improve if they could use more technology to practice writing for school.
Forty-seven percent of teen bloggers write outside of school for personal reasons several times a week or more, compared with 33 percent of teens without blogs. Sixty-five percent of teen bloggers believe that writing is essential to later success in life; 53 percent of non-bloggers say the same thing.
Most students (82 percent) believe that additional instruction and focus on writing in school would help improve their writing even further--and more than three-quarters of those surveyed (78 percent) think it would help their writing if their teachers used computer-based writing tools such as games, multimedia, or writing software programs or web sites during class.

One of the suggestions is to have a class focus together on one strategy in their comments to each other. I can see how the sentence frames would be very helpful, especially for younger writers.
