Great examples of how different perspectives (1st, 2nd, and 3rd person) can shift the feel of storytelling. Jonathan Hill also describes Vonnegut's "Man in a Hole" model for stories where a character overcomes a problem. I think that simpler narrative structure is much more useful for storytelling in training than the more complex "Hero's Journey."

Do not confuse traits with facts. Ages, shoe sizes and job titles do not make an interesting character. Are they impulsive or thoughtful, trusting or suspicious, assertive or passive?
Elements in backstory and traits that really matter for the story need to be released slowly: through flashbacks, dialogue, or actions. This gradual discovery keeps learners intrigued and invested.

This study researched whether adding story elements to an instructional video affects motivation, emotional engagement, and learning. In the research, they explain that they did not find any difference between a well-produced instructional video and a storified instructional video.

However, the storified video feels very artificial to me. This isn't a story about a relevant character the learners can identify with who uses the concepts in realistic situations (or even slightly exaggerated ones). This is about a fake detective agency. I'd be cautious about assuming this research applies to realistic stories as well.

In a comparison of narrative and expository format for video instruction, learners retained more information with the narrative format.
In a controlled experiment, participants listened to videotaped instruction presented in either narrative or expository form and presented at<br> either a normal or a moderately compressed rate. Results indicate a relationship between organization<br> and retention such that audience members retain more information when it is presented in a<br> narrative style and when it is presented at a normal presentation rate. Practically, the results suggest advantages for narrative form in the everyday practice of instructional communication.
