Seeing C diff differently - The Lancet
The first time I had a Clostridioides difficile infection, I was 37 years old. After a sequential antibiotic cocktail of amoxicillin, penicillin, metronidazole, and clindamycin prescribed to combat an infection in my jaw, I had the first wave of symptoms. Even having a long history of stomach-related issues dating back to my childhood, these new symptoms were like nothing I had ever experienced. Anything I consumed quickly traversed my gastrointestinal system within an impressively short timeframe, leaving me with a feeling of perpetual emptiness and exhaustion, a heightened awareness of the nearest restroom facilities, and an existential appreciation for saltine crackers.
