Bird flu-infected San Bernardino County dairy cows may have concerning new mutation
A new H5N1 bird flu mutation has appeared in a cluster of infected dairy cows. It's a genetic change that scientists say could not only make the virus more lethal, but increase its spread between mammals and possibly humans.
Revolutionary Water-Soluble Treatment Fights Bird Flu Crisis in $35B Egg Industry
Novel galectin antagonist blocks H5N1 virus entry, potentially eliminating need for mass culling. Bioxytran's breakthrough could revolutionize poultry disease management.
What is Bird Flu? How bad is it? Who is most vulnerable? What’s the solution? What’s going on right now? As of March 7, 2025, confirmed bird flu cases in humans (by state) are as follows: State: CA WA CO NV WY OR TX LA MO IA WI MI OH Cases: 38 11 10 1 […]

Life science companies developing bird flu vaccines are gaining attention as the avian influenza subtype H5N1 becomes an increasing concern. The United States is in the midst of an H5N1 bird flu outbreak that began in February 2024 and is now threatening the nation’s poultry and cattle industries. W...
Immune history shapes human antibody responses to H5N1 influenza viruses
Nature Medicine - H5N1 strain-specific antibodies are higher in older individuals and correlate more with birth year than with age, suggesting that younger individuals are potentially more likely...

We need agricultural intelligence to protect against the threat of avian influenza
As of early March, 30 poultry operations in Canada were dealing with avian influenza outbreaks: 16 in B.C., 10 in Ontario, and one each in Alberta, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Pandemic influenza remains a significant global health threat, as signalled by the
circulation and cross-species transmission of avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses from
the clade 2.3.4.4b, including among dairy cattle in the USA since 2024. Although most
of the reported human infections from the USA so far1,2 have been mild, the virus
can change its profile rapidly. To reduce mortality and morbidity from influenza in
humans, vaccines remain the most important intervention.
Comment: Vaccination is not the panacea we need for avian flu - Poultry News
By Gary Ford, policy advisor, BFREPA February has been a challenging month for the poultry sector with the ongoing threat and indeed cases of Avian flu in [...]
Older adults who were exposed to seasonal flu viruses that circulated prior to 1968 are more likely to have some protection against H5N1, and that children would benefit more from H5N1 vaccines.
Poll: Most Republicans Do Not Trust CDC On Bird Flu | KFF
As bird flu continues to circulate among animals in the U.S. with some human cases, about six in 10 (58%) people overall have at least “a fair amount” of trust in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide reliable information about bird flu, though only 21% have a “great deal of trust,”…More
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Virus Stability in Irradiated Raw Milk and Wastewater and on Surfaces, United States - PubMed
We measured stability of infectious influenza A(H5N1) virus in irradiated raw milk and wastewater and on surfaces. We found a relatively slow decay in milk, indicating that contaminated milk and fomites pose transmission risks. Although the risk is low, our results call for caution in milk handling …
Evidence of novel reassortment in clade 2.3.4.4b avian influenza H5N1 viruses, India, 2024 - PubMed
H5N1 viruses belonging to clade 2.3.4.4b have caused unprecedented outbreaks globally. Outbreaks of H5N1 virus were reported in poultry and wild birds from Kerala (India) in the year 2024. Samples from birds and the environment were collected. Real-time RT-PCR and virus isolation using embryonated c …
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in Mammals: Lack of Detection in Cattle With Respiratory Tract Infections and Genetic Analysis of Sporadic Spillover Infections in Wild Mammals in Bavaria, Southern Germany, 2022-2023 - PubMed
Our results indicate a high frequency of spillover events to red foxes at a time when there was a peak of H5N1 infections in wild birds in Bavaria. Phylogenetic analyses show no specifically close genetic relationship between viruses detected in mammalian predators within a geographic area. While di …
H5N1 influenza A virus: lessons from past outbreaks and emerging threats - PubMed
The first highly pathogenic H5N1 emerged in 1959 on a chicken farm in Scotland. The ancestor of the strains presently circulating was isolated in 1996 from a domestic goose in China. Since 1997, more than 900 severe human infections have been reported. However, in nearly thirty years, H5N1 has faile …
One-pot synthesized three-way junction based multiple strand displacement amplification for sensitive assay of H5N1 DNA - PubMed
The rapid and sensitive detection of H5N1, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, is crucial for controlling its spread and minimizing its impact on public health. In this study, we developed a novel biosensor based on strand displacement amplification (SDA) coupled with CRISPR/Cas12a for highly …
Westfield Regional Health Department Reported Cases of Bird Flu in Over 100 Cats
By: Najla Alexander Westfield officials announced that their Regional Health Department (WRHD) is urging pet owners to be vigilant following reports of bird flu (H5N1) in cats. The virus has recently been detected in several outdoor cats in Hunterdon County and over 100 domestic cats nationwide, Westfield officials stated.
Neutralizing Antibody Response to Influenza A(H5N1) Virus in Dairy Farm Workers, Michigan, USA - PubMed
Since March 2024, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses have caused outbreaks in dairy cattle and poultry in the United States, and they continue to spill over into humans. However, data on human immune response to those viruses is limited. We report neutralizing antibody responses in 2 …
A replicating recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus model for dairy cattle H5N1 influenza virus glycoprotein evolution - PubMed
Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5 viruses have spread globally, established sustained transmission in mammals and caused human infections. Research on these viruses is restricted to high biocontainment laboratories. We report the characterization and utility of a surrogate, replicating virus that …
Antiviral Susceptibility of Influenza A(H5N1) Clade 2.3.2.1c and 2.3.4.4b Viruses from Humans, 2023-2024 - PubMed
During 2023-2024, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses from clade 2.3.2.1c caused human infections in Cambodia and from clade 2.3.4.4b caused human infections in the Americas. We assessed the susceptibility of those viruses to approved and investigational antiviral drugs. Except for 2 v …
