In its previous editions the community has offered important insights on this practice from many diverse perspectives – technical, philosophical, educational, political and more. assemblag.es is a Mastodon instance for people interested in thinking creatively and critically about technology, in the broadest sense. The only requirement is that you keep to the code of conduct! Note: we've paused new signups for a few days while we deal with the #twittermigration influx - please do request an invite, but be aware that for now functions more like a 'waiting list' than a knock on the door, until our numbers stabilise again :-)

Compassion through Algorithms
Compassion through Algorithms
Although none of us contributing to this compilation are black, racial discrimination is not unfamiliar to our society here in East Asia. Music is one of the best examples to show that difference can create great value, and we think that algorithms can be a tool that demonstrates that racism doesn’t make any sense. All of us want to stand up for people who are now being discriminated against and demand that they be respected equally. In order to support the black community, these tracks have been compiled and released for the Juneteenth Bandcamp campaign on June 19, 2020. https://daily.bandcamp.com/features/bandcamp-naacp-ldf-fundraiser We'll also donate 100% of our share from the sales of this compilation (from Juneteenth onward) for additional support. We’re currently researching the best destination for those donations and will update this page once we’ve identified where we’ll donate (we’re considering the NAACP or an organization supporting programming education for black children; let us know if you have a suggestion). The participating artists are based in or born in East Asia and compose their music using algorithmic techniques on computers: - Chiyou Dean (Taipei, Taiwan) - okachiho (Tokyo, Japan) - moxus (Tokyo, Japan) - Tadashi Usami (Tokyo, Japan) - Li Song (London, U.K.) - Naoki Nomoto (Tokyo, Japan) - Renick Bell (Tokyo, Japan) - illiichi (Aichi, Japan) The cover artwork was designed by Renick Bell using an algorithm called an L-system. You can check more of his work at this link: https://www.instagram.com/renickbell/ The compilation was mastered by okachiho. The header artwork was designed by moxus.
