5 Key learnings from 2023 By Austin Perlmutter, MD Over the last several days, I had the honor of attending and presenting at the annual Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute Conference. This year’s theme was “neuroimmunity,” which meant the focus was squarely on brain health. Speakers at the conference included some of the world’s leading researchers and clinicians on the brain, and the presentations were nothing short of outstanding. I’d like to share with you 5 of the top predictions for

How an common anti-fungal drug could help stop brain disease - YouTube
Without medical breakthroughs, more than 6.4M Australians will be diagnosed with dementia in the next 40 years at a cost of more than $1 trillion. This week I want to discuss several exciting publications that have appeared in the research literature in 2020. It’s not just dementia, other diseases like Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke, and even depression are increasingly being linked to something called mitochondrial dysfunction. The literature shows that 2 approaches called: methylene blue and photobiomodulation might be very effective. But why? This issue of mitochondria and its’ link with inflammatory processes has been known for some time. Especially, with respect to how fungal pathogens and environmental fungi seem to induce similar mitochondrial dysfunction in humans. I will look at what’s known about this and then review a paper from 2020 showing that fungi have been found in the brains of people with Parkinson’s disease. This has been termed ‘polymicrobial invasion’ and suggests that some brain disorders are catalyzed by infections. The main paper I want to focus on as part of this Livestream came out on August 14th, 2020, and shows that brain inflammation, cytokine expression, and memory can be actively modulated with a common anti-fungal drug. This is breakthrough research and suggests this treatment could offer real relief in the near term. Join me on the Livestream or on the Podcast to find out which drug offers this potential microbiological benefit and what evidence supports this claim. REFERENCES: Mudarri D, Fisk WJ. How to Enhance Your Memory & Brain Power - with Jim Kwik The Empowering Neurologist EP. 145 - YouTube
We spend quite a bit of time talking about what we can do to protect and even enhance our brains. So much of our messaging deals with lifestyle choices like exercise, sleep, and certainly the foods that we eat. Basically, these are interventions that target the hardware, meaning the brain substance itself. Today we're going to chat with Jim Kwik. Jim has made it his life's work to actually target the software. That means, he is providing us tools that can absolutely enhance how our brains are able to do the various wonderful things that they are constantly involved in. You Are the Weaver of Your Own Brain Health Everything you do and everything you experience affect the fabric of your brain and dictate your brain’s fate. What you eat, what you think, how well you sleep, how you feel emotionally, your level of physical activity, and how well the rest of the systems in your body function all affect your brain’s biology. Brain Weaver, the subject of our podcast today, written by physicians at the forefront of research in brain functioning, invites you to achieve optimal brain health by successfully weaving together a tapestry of your bio-psycho-social-spiritual dimensions. Basically, we’ll learn that there are quite a few other variables that we can bring to bear on our quest to create a better brain. ==== Daniel A. Monti, MD, MBA, is founding director and CEO of the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and founding chair of the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at the Thomas Jefferson University Medical College in Philadelphia. His research focuses on assessing promising mind-body interventions and brain mechanisms of stress and emotional regulation, and is coauthor of the popular book Tapestry of Health. Andrew Newberg, MD, is the research director of the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at the Thomas Jefferson University Medical College. He is the author of ten books, including the bestseller How God Changes Your Brain, a book I have used as an important resource for the last several years. Andy is regarded as one of the most influential neuroscientists working today. The authors’ findings coincide with a decades-long surge in the public’s interest in whole-person treatments—body, mind, and spirit evidence-based integrative therapies that include pharmaceuticals, electromagnetics, nutrition, and meditation.
