What is the size of the Niacin dose you are taking? Is it causing any “flushing” or itchiness? If your answer is yes, are the symptoms less than 20 minutes? How long do these symptoms last? The ideal niacin dosage varies depending on an individual's genetics and their infections and/or stresses. Ultimately, perhaps the best gauge of the most effective niacin dosage regimen may involve the flush response. The niacin-eliciting flush pathway is known to be independent of the NAD biosynthetic pathway in our understanding thus far, and the niacin dose that just causes flushing is currently known to be exceptionally therapeutic for several indications. Still, some will flush with as little as 50 mg while others still do not even experience a flush after taking 4,000 mg at one time! A simple straightforward recommendation is to take whatever dosage of niacin that elicits a flush response, starting with low doses and increasing gradually over several days to weeks until a flush appears. Personally, I found that taking Niacin with food reduced the "flush" effect. Sometimes I feel like a flush, sometimes I don't.
As I dig deeper into the research on Niacin and Niacinamide it becomes apparent that there are conflicting studies, opinions and recommendations that are dependent on what you are trying to accomplish. My main focus is simply "brain repair", so it is going to take time to research and review the information available for breast cancer patients.
The following article suggests that Niacinamide may interfere with Niacin's ability to repair brain damage. Remember that Niacin can create a flushing effect and you must start out with small doses such as 1/64th tsp. a couple times a day. To avoid the flushing affect, simply mix your niacin powder into food and gradually increase the dose each day, up to 1/8 tsp. until you experience a slight flushing affect. It is fine to take the weekends off.
PLEASE note that some people do not tolerate Niacin very well. In that case, stop using it or try smaller doses with food. I’m still reviewing the research so these recommendations may change over time…
