COVID-19 and the Brain

From 2020: "Vascular events such as strokes have been reported in COVID-19 patients. It is thought that SARS-CoV-2 causes a thickening of the blood, which leads to blood clots"

1/A reminder that #LongCovid patients have microclots. We are sending children to school with no mitigations and a 5% chance of a disease that damages you blood vessels.🩸 ALL 80 patients tested in this paper had moderate microclots. Green is microclots.

New study offers clues as to how long COVID affects the heart | Houston Public Media
“A study from Houston Methodist found some #LongCovid patients aren't getting enough blood to their heart.. The ability of endothelial cells, which play a key role in dilating arteries.. was diminished by 20% among 101 long covid patients who participated”

Long covid clot risk
Long covid clot risk
“COVID-19 triggers a massive release of biomolecules from the immune system…these molecules can gum up the blood and make it more likely to form clots…a new study is showing that people with long COVID have a higher risk of blood clots.”

A central role for amyloid fibrin microclots in long COVID/PASC: origins and therapeutic implications
“The result, as is strongly manifested in platelet-poor plasma (PPP) of individuals with Long COVID, is extensive fibrin amyloid microclots that can persist, can entrap other proteins, and that may lead to the production of various autoantibodies.”

Typical inflammatory conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes etc are known to have hypercoagulation - which is a hallmark of systemic inflammation. Microclots and platelet hyperactivation are both present in these conditions. Longcovid has significantly more microclots

SARS-CoV-2 Mediated Endothelial Dysfunction: The Potential Role of Chronic Oxidative Stress
SARS-CoV-2 Mediated Endothelial Dysfunction: The Potential Role of Chronic Oxidative Stress
"Endothelial cells have emerged as key players in SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 inflammatory pathologies. Dysfunctional endothelial cells can promote chronic inflammation and disease processes like thrombosis, atherosclerosis, and lung injury."

Tiny, Menacing Microclots May Explain Long COVID’s Symptoms
Tiny, Menacing Microclots May Explain Long COVID’s Symptoms

“One core question is: Do these microclots actually represent a root cause, or are they in response to something else that's ongoing?” says Michael VanElzakker PhD, co-founder of PolyBio Research Foundation, which is focused on studying viral reservoir:

Anecdote: Big news: I was lucky to get tested for micro blood clots, & I have a lot of them! #LongCovid

Healthy control blood on the left. Mine on the right. The green is all microclots!

These clots are likely blocking oxygen from getting around my body & could explain many symptoms. 1/

This is starting to get frustrating ~ Another #LongCovid pt travels across the world to Germany & gets a simple blood test which reveals a clear biomarker - #MicroClots

The fact we still don’t have this simple test readily available is a failure. What are we waiting for??
